THE HEART TO CARE. THE SKILL TO HEAL.
PUBLISHER A Celebration of Dads CHRISTIAN EVANGELIST Billy Graham said, “A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.” A strong male role model is important for both boys and girls to have as they take the journey from newborn to adult and beyond. A child’s relationship with his or her father will influence greatly the relationships the child will have in the future. Daughters will tend to search out men who are like their fathers, while sons will tend to mold themselves after their father - their first male role model.

Being present and actively teaching life skills is an important quality for fathers to possess. But let’s face it, many children in our society today do not have a father present in their lives. This is where it becomes especially important for us as a community to help nurture these children. One area where I have been blessed to influence the lives of children is through my role as a coach. I don’t simply instruct kids on the fundamentals of football, baseball and basketball, I teach them important life skills as well. And I listen. It is not just through coaching that men can influence the lives of the younger generation, there are countless opportunities through church groups, Big Brother programs, Boy Scouts and more. Does one of your children have a friend who does not have a father figure? Invite them to a ball game or a father / daughter dance. It will mean the world to them. On this Father’s Day, take the time to reflect on the people in your lives who have been a father figure to you. In addition to your own dad, reach out and thank them for the role they have played. A very happy Father’s Day to all the dads! You are valued more than you know! Creating. Connecting. Living Local.

UPDATING YOUR KITCHEN? THE LATEST TRENDS FOR 2016
EVERY SPRING, THE KITCHEN and bath industry releases the most popular trends thus far in the year. They get their data from those in the design profession based on what they are designing and selling most. Here’s what the trends are revealing so far for 2016. White is the most popular kitchen color. White is in almost everyone’s kitchen. Cabinets, countertops, sink, appliances, backsplash, etc. This is because white presents itself as “clean”, but it also gives space a larger feel. We are seeing more and more shades of white incorporated with gray, black and variations of blues. Wood is the number one material of choice – butcher block, cabinets, wood flooring, and trims. Even if cabinets are white, most painted cabinets are maple wood. Quartz is the number one material for countertops. Quartz is the Cadillac of countertops. It’s non-porous, which means nothing can penetrate it (think salmonella). It’s antimicrobial, requires no maintenance, so no re-sealing it every year and is very durable. There are some incredible patterns, but is also available in a more uniform pattern range if you want something simple.

BRING IT OUTSIDE
The number one must-have for a kitchen is an island, according to 82 percent of the kitchen design professionals surveyed. A close second must-have is a recycling center. This can be a pull-out trash compartment, a corner recycling cube that has multiple canisters or just a space in the kitchen dedicated to recycling. I’ve seen holes cut in the top of countertops so that customers don’t have to pull open a trash can to just drop something into the canister below. This is popular in commercial restrooms and kitchens, but now that’s even being incorporated into residential applications. The number one appliance used in the kitchen is the sink. On average, it’s frequented between 10 to 30 times each day. You can spend thousands of dollars on new appliances, so put the kitchen sink in with that same level of importance. People are asking for more organic design, using salvaged materials and recycled woods. Just take a walk through furniture stores,

kitchen design showrooms, and watch a little television and you’ll see examples of this. We are even seeing an increase in people ordering new cabinets with vintage finishes. Outdoor kitchens are in more demand. We have seen this and encourage using stainless steel cabinets. Also, we have countertops that are specifically made for outdoor use. They won’t fade in the sun and you won’t have to worry about the freeze-thaw factor and any cracking. Also, they are highly resistant to fire and heat. This kind of materials is not limited to outdoor countertop use though. It is available in flooring, tiles, interior countertops as well. Most new construction does not incorporate the formal dining room as part of their base

floor plans. Most people prefer the open floor plan concept where the kitchen, living and dining rooms share one common area without walls providing division with doorways.
We Set the Standard!
People are also downsizing. Minimal area needed for storage and living space is ideal without all the extra bedrooms. With things like murphy beds and open floor plans, you can still accommodate guests, but not have a lot of wasted square footage with guest rooms and dining rooms that only get used a few times a year. Smart use of space helps eliminate the need for additional square footage, in turn saving your money. It’ll be fun to see how these trends continue to shape and develop our design styles throughout the summer and into this fall.

IT’S ALMOST FATHER’S DAY. If you’re a dad with young children, you can expect some nice homemade cards and maybe even a baseball cap. But, of course, your greatest reward is spending time with your kids and watching them grow. In return, you can give them a gift – the gift of knowledge. For starters, encourage your children to become savers. You can do this in a couple of different ways. First, set a good example. You might explain to your kids that you want to buy a certain item, but you are waiting for it to go on sale. Or, if it’s a particularly big-ticket item, like an ultra high-definition television, tell your children that you simply can’t afford it now, but that you are putting away some money each week until you can. You might even make a chart showing your progress. Another way to help your children become better savers is to provide them with a monetary incentive. To illustrate: For every dollar they put into a “piggy bank” or an actual savings account, tell them you’ll put in, say, 50 cents. They are likely to be pleased and excited by how much faster their money grows with your contribution, and they may well become more motivated to save. Furthermore, you’ll be giving them a valuable lesson for later on in life, when they work for a business that offers to match their contributions to a 401(k) or other retirement plan. Unfortunately, many young people, upon taking on their first “career” jobs, either under-contribute to their retirement plans or ignore them completely – thereby making it more likely that, later on in their working lives, they will have to come up with much bigger sums each year to accumulate enough resources for a comfortable retirement. Learning to save is certainly important – but children should also learn about investing. To

help get your children interested in becoming investors, point out that they can actually own shares of companies with which they are already familiar – the companies that make the games they play, the movies they watch and the food they eat. In fact, you could even simulate the investment process by letting them choose a stock and then follow it. To make the results more tangible, use “play” money to represent an initial investment, and add or subtract to the pile to track the ups and downs of the real stock. You might even explain some of the reasons for the stock’s movements; for example, if you and your child are following the stock of an entertainment company, and that company produces a blockbuster movie that leads to sequels, spinoffs and merchandise tie-ins, you can point out how these developments have pushed up the company’s stock price. You might also explain that while these shortterm price movements are interesting – and maybe even fun – to follow, investing is actually a long-term endeavor, and the best investors often hold stocks for many years before selling them. By following these suggestions, you can help your children acquire good financial habits – and seeing them put these skills to good use can provide you with many happy Father’s Days in the future.

PAYING THE PRICE WHY IT MAKES “CENTS” TO REVIEW YOUR INSURANCE BY TREVOR CAMPBELL
A GOOD PRACTICE
QUOTE VS. PREMIUM
IT STARTS WITH A FUNNY NOISE – a rattle, a pop, that awful ear-piercing screech. Whatever it is you know one thing for sure – it’s time for help. You take your car in for a checkup when something doesn’t sound right or when it’s time for routine maintenance , so why not treat your insurance the same? If we look back over the last 10 years so many things have changed – phones, computers, cars – the same can be said for the insurance industry, yet you may not pay attention to these changes until a bill shows up in the mail and you notice your insurance rates have gone up. When determining a premium and whether the carrier will want to assume the risk, much is taken into consideration including accidents, new drivers, claims on a homeowner’s policy and even your credit score. Quote vs. Premium It’s important to understand that an insurance quote and premium are not the same. A quote is an estimate of premium for the kind of coverage you request based on the initial information you provide. A quote is NOT a guarantee of what you might end up actually paying for your premium once a carrier reviews and evaluates your record. The price you are quoted versus the actual price of your premium also depends on how your quote was calculated. Every insurance provider calculates these numbers slightly different. Ultimately it comes down to the individual insurance carriers, their state filings, and the underwriting departments to
Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain!
determine your final premium payment. A Method to the Madness You see your premium go up and you want to know why – you didn’t have an accident or a claim – so how can your rate just increase? The quick answer is that figuring out insurance premiums isn’t easy. Insurance companies hire and develop people who specialize in this exact area, known as actuaries. It’s their job to analyze and evaluate information for each client – age, driving record, claims history and a lot more. An actuary then predicts how likely an insurance applicant is to make a claim on their policy. The higher the chance usually the higher the premium. It Pays to Review As the market and company underwriting requirements change, it’s a good idea to review and evaluate insurance policies to make sure you have what you need in place in the event something happens in the future. So keep in mind it’s a good practice to have your insurance reviewed as your needs change. One of the benefits of working with an independent agency is the agency’s ability to evaluate multiple carriers at the same time, under the same roof. Imagine how much easier it would be to visit just one auto shop location with multiple auto mechanics from different companies and getting multiple quotes at the same time. Now take that concept and put it to use when it comes to your insurance. It doesn’t get much easier than that!

LIONS AND TIGERS AND DEER, OH MY! LIMIT THE INTERACTION BETWEEN PETS AND WILDLIFE MAMMALIAN INSTINCT
BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL
INCREASINGLY, HUMANS CONTINUE to migrate from urban sprawl to our lovely Idaho Panhandle with the intent of snuggling into nature. How many people on our planet can enjoy clean air, 360-degree vistas, chirping birds, croaking frogs, and the whistling wind through pine boughs – all from their own backyards?
Limiting the interactions between family pets and public wildlife is not simply safer for the pets but also responsible towards wildlife. We treat countless injured dogs and cats who are stomped by moose, skewered by deer, lifted and dropped by owls and hawks, and gnawed upon by weasels. On the other side, The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimate that cats kill over 2.4 billion birds and 24 billion mammals each year in our country. Obviously, making sure female felines are neutered is critical to eliminate the feral (domestic gone wild) cat population. Domestic animals are a human creation and our responsibility.
Humans have been encroaching on critical wildlife winter habitat for hundreds of years. My message is that when one lives on the “edge,” one must be content to share. Oftentimes, the excitement of seeing the first bear, moose or deer in the neighborhood clouds the fact that the boundaries of our domestic animals overlap with those of the wild creatures. When moose migrate into someone’s favorite hedge, homeowners forget that those critters were actually munching downtown long before the new landscape was constructed. When a coyote furtively stalks their chickens or attempts to “engage” their pooch, consider it a mere act of mammalian instinct – nothing personal.
Two of the doctors at our hospital have degrees in Wildlife Biology and have always supported helping injured wildlife species. Idaho Fish and Game personnel and the general public frequently transport wounded wildlife for evaluation and appropriate treatment. This has been accomplished for 20 years as a donated service by our hospital. We have surgically removed plastic from seagull’s intestines, sutured lacerations

on deer, treated songbirds with head injuries (glass windows look like mirrors), and performed orthopedic surgeries on countless hawks, eagles and osprey. They are then sent to various rehabilitation centers (which also operate solely on public donations). Our unique north Idaho environment often results in visitors becoming residents. This helps our town grow and stimulates our local economy and diversity, however, it can also threaten those very aspects which were attractive in the first place. Sharing this beautiful piece of the planet with those species who evolved here does take an active and informed effort – but the benefits are immense. North Idaho Animal Hospital is now able to accept tax-deductible donations for this extremely gratifying but expensive work. A YAPPIN’ GOOD TIME Come out to support the efforts of the Panhandle Animal Shelter. By Jessica Herbig
THE PANHANDLE ANIMAL SHELTER (PAS) is fully immersed in Yappy Hour, one of many fundraisers held at various local businesses once a month! Yappy Hour starts early every spring and is held once a month through the summer. Participants and their loyal companions are welcomed and entertained for a few hours in the evening in an effort to continue to raise money to support the programs of the PAS.
Have you been on Facebook lately to see how promptly lost animals are reunited with their owners, in part because of PAS’s quick response time? Go check it out! Their success rates are great, and this fundraiser will only continue to bolster their efforts on behalf of our four-legged furry friends. Utilizing social media and the technology era, PAS has proven they can stay on top of the trend to better serve their animal population.
On June 30, join the PAS at the Pine Street Bakery, 710 Pine Street in Sandpoint, for live music, beverages and tons of fun. All dogs welcome! The fun starts at 4pm and continues through 7pm.
Call 208.265.7297 for more information about this event as well as the upcoming events in months to come or visit them online at www.pasidaho.org. No tickets or advanced purchase necessary.
The Panhandle Animal Shelter serves all of Bonner County, providing for approximately 1,600 lost, abandoned, neglected and abused animals every year. At the shelter, cats and dogs receive a safe, nurturing environment and the opportunity to be placed into qualified new adoptive homes. Their programs also assist in the safe and prompt return of lost pets.

YOUR PARTNER IN WATER RECREATION Local company continues to expand to meet customers’ needs BY PATTY HUTCHENS FOR THOSE LIVING IN NORTH IDAHO, water recreation is a major part of our lives. After all, who can resist the temptation of the beautiful lake surrounded by majestic mountains? But often people are deterred from purchasing a watercraft due to the difficulty with storage and service. With Big Lake Recreation, that is no longer a concern for many. Just ask those who have trusted them for the last eight years for everything from storage to routine maintenance to full engine repowers.
FULL SERVICE family business and enjoy interacting with members of the community they call home. “We have customers that have been with us since day one, and we can’t express how thankful we are for their support,” said Todd. “Additionally, we meet new customers every day and truly value all of the relationships we have been able to make over last eight years.”
Todd and Jeannie McKay founded Big Lake Recreation in 2008. Earlier this year their daughter and her husband, Erica and Garrett Dunn, joined them as partners, a welcomed addition as the business continues to grow.
Big Lake Recreation is able to provide the superior and comprehensive service they offer because of a great team of workers that include Tim Farmin, Brenan Weme, Ben Pyorala, Robert Harrison and Brent Stafford. “They make up our Big Lake family, and we are so thankful for the great work they do,” said Erica. “We have been growing quickly and we know that growth comes with some growing pains.”
“We primarily take care of powerboats, but we also have RVs, personal watercraft such as jet skis, and sailboats,” said Todd, who adds that Big Lake also partners with many community businesses to provide services such as fiberglass repair and paint; retail sales of boat parts and accessories; docks, canopies and boat lifts, upholstery, stereo and audio installation and much more.
To continue to accommodate the growth, they have made many changes and improvements at Big Lake Recreation. Their new and reimagined website contains information for their customers including the ability to schedule services and a list of boats that are for sale. They purchased all new, commercial-grade cleaning equipment this year and are very pleased with how much it is improving the cleaning side of the business. Additionally, they are now paper-free, making their record keeping abilities run even smoother than before
So what is it that keeps customers coming back year after year? It all comes down to the excellent 24 hour a day, 7 days a week service they provide. In fact, it’s a common sight to see Todd or one of his staff on the lake helping out a stranded boater no matter what the day or hour. “We offer 24/7 emergency service to our program customers,” said Erica. “We know our role in the community is a privilege, and we work hard to make sure we’re good neighbors.”
“We’ve made a lot of changes and improvements this year and are excited to see what the future holds for Big Lake,” said Garrett. “We know there will never be a time where we’re perfect, but our promise is that we will never stop learning and we will never stop working towards being the best we can be for our customers.”
When the McKay family moved from Southern Idaho to the area in 2008, they knew they had found their forever home. “Sandpoint captured our hearts,” said Jeannie. “We loved the beauty of the area and the strong sense of community.”

LEARNING FUN
MIKE MCNELLEY - 5TH GRADE TEACHER AT NORTHSIDE ELEMENTARY BY PATTY HUTCHENS THIS MONTH’S Teacher of the Month is Mike McNelley. And for anyone who knows Mike, they know he was a great choice. A teacher for 19 years, McNelley makes learning fun and engaging for his students. As a fifth grade teacher at Northside Elementary, McNelley teaches multiple subjects. When asked what he finds most rewarding about being a teacher, he said it is having the opportunity to build a classroom “family” where 25 to 30 young people work together for the academic good. “It’s an awesome experience,” he said. “However, it is just as rewarding to watch a young person blossom academically and individually.” He emphasizes that being a teacher means more than just interacting with his students; it is important to build a relationship with both the child and the child’s family. McNelley said he has had many experiences each day that are fulfilling as a teacher. “But if I am honest, and a little bit selfish, the most rewarding years and experiences were having both my sons as fifth grade students at Northside Elementary,” said McNelley. “Although they found it a bit less rewarding having their father as an educator.” In addition to his passion for teaching, McNelley brings a passion for the outdoors to the Northside students as well. On Monday afternoons after school lets out, he works with the gardening club at Northside helping students tend to the school garden. He and his wife Michelle, who is a kindergarten teacher at Washington Elementary, have two sons, Tanner and Ryan. Tanner attends the University of Idaho and Ryan is a student at Sandpoint High School. The family enjoys living locally, raising dairy goats and growing their own food. Experiencing the great outdoors is another passion of McNelley and his family. They enjoy skiing, hiking and

As a role model for his students, McNelley said that one of the most important lessons he would like to convey to his students it is that the most important life skill is to be truly honest with oneself. “We all make mistakes, but the ability to own a blunder is really valuable,” he shared. “This is where legitimate growth begins.” Teacher of the Month Sponsored in Part by Alliance Title.

TERRIFIED, ISOLATED, HELPLESS. These are just a few of the emotions that sexual abuse and domestic violence victims experience on a daily basis. And it does not discriminate. It happens to people of all ages, ethnic backgrounds and economic levels. It is a horrific experience from which many never recover. But thanks to an amazing group of people in North Idaho, that does not have to be the case for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence in our area. There is help. Priest River Ministries Advocates for Women first started in 2002 as a Bible study support group for women who were victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. They received their nonprofit status in 2006 and opened their first shelter, “Ruth’s House,” in 2009. Today, they have expanded to a total of three shelters – Ruth’s House, Esther’s House and Rebekah’s Room.
HELPING THE MOST VULNERABLE AS A TESTIMONY TO THEIR MISSION OF ENCOURAGING WOMEN, ALL THE SHELTERS ARE NAMED AFTER STRONG WOMEN IN THE BIBLE.
“We can shelter four families at a time, around 20 women and children at one time,” explained Executive Director Rhonda Encinas. “Esther’s is an extended stay shelter. Intact families in crisis and abused men are welcomed at Rebekah’s Room when it is available.” As a testimony to their mission of encouraging women, all the shelters are named after strong women in the Bible. But don’t let the name Priest River Ministries mislead you; the group serves victims from Bonner, Boundary and the northern part of Kootenai Counties. “And truth be told, we have taken women from Washington, Montana, Southern Idaho, Florida and California,” said Encinas. Because abuse happens anytime day or night, Priest River Ministries has a crisis line that victims can call 24 hours a day, seven days a

week. They also offer victim services, court advocacy, ongoing support groups, client transportation, education on domestic and sexual violence, paralegal assistance, emergency and extended stay shelters, mobile advocacy, a learning lab with computers and printers, biblical and secular counseling, child care, food and clothing at Lydia’s free clothing store, and household supplies. In an effort to better serve those in North Idaho, Priest River Ministries recently expanded and opened an office in Sandpoint on May 16. Located in the Pioneer Building at 819 Highway 2, the Sandpoint office is open Mondays 9am to noon, Tuesday through Thursdays 1 to 4pm. “Having an office makes it more convenient, confidential and because we have a childcare room, it is less stressful,” said Encinas. And as funding and volunteers increase, the

organization hopes to open additional offices. “Priest River is our main office and is open five days per week 9am to 4pm in the winter and 9am to 5pm in the summer,” said Encinas. “Our mobile advocate drives to outreach locations each week where she has been meeting clients in Spirit Lake, Sandpoint, Blanchard, Sagle and beyond. Sometime she meets them in coffee shops and sometimes in their homes.” Services such as clothing, supplies and diapers are always open to the public. And for those needing shelter, Encinas said the group primarily shelters women and children of domestic violence, sexual assault or trafficking. “But we have sheltered single men, men with children and intact families in crisis when we had availability,” she said. “We help families in need regardless of age, religion or ethnicity.” Help is just a phone call away. Victims can access services any time day or night by contacting the office or crisis line. Paralegal help is available by appointment and Encinas will assist in scheduling counseling appointments. Priest River Ministries does not receive any government funding. In order to help support the incredible work this group is doing, 7B Women, a committee of the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce, is holding a fundraiser on June 16 at the Bernd Barrel in downtown Sandpoint.

For an entrance fee of $10 you will have the chance to enjoy a no-host bar and choose from an array of dresses, skirts, shorts, jackets, accessories and more! There is no charge for the items you choose! “Priest River Ministries Advocates for Women has been assisting women in receiving the services they need locally for several years behind the scenes,” said 7B Women committee member and organizer of the event Alice Sloane of Washington Trust Bank. “7B Women chose to help fundraise for Priest River Ministries Advocates for Women’s new location because we believe in connecting women with the resources they need to be successful individuals in our community. Opening a new facility in Sandpoint will increase the variety of services offered and make them more readily available for local women and their families.“ Priest River Ministries is doing much to build relationships with women and encourage them on their journey of well being. If you or someone you know is in need of their services, contact them at the Crisis Hotline number 208.290.6529 or their office number of 208.448.2800. If you cannot make the fundraiser but would like to donate, please contact Priest River Ministries. “Our biggest need is currently funding,” said Encinas. “We are financially stable for six months in Sandpoint minus a computer. A computer would be the next need.”

TEAMWORK FOR WELLNESS Chiropractic care treats more than just an aching back BY PATTY HUTCHENS TEAMWORK. THAT IS THE APPROACH that Dr. Hans Steidl takes when working with his patients. As a chiropractor and owner of Steidl Family Chiropractic, Dr. Steidl uses a manual, hands-on adjusting technique that is often coupled with home and self-care exercises so his patients can maximize their recovery. “We love working with people of all ages and various conditions, “ said Dr. Steidl of his passion of helping people on their journey to wellness.
Steidl first lived in Sandpoint from 2007 to 2010 and returned in 2015 to the town he loves to call home. His wife, Jessica, is a Sandpoint native, going from being a Northside Husky to a Sandpoint Bulldog. “We have two kids and there’s not a better place to raise children,” said Dr. Steidl. While Dr. Steidl said he has had various mentors who have helped him in a variety of ways, he credits Jessica with being the reason for his success. “She has worked in the front office of two different chiropractic clinics,” said Dr. Steidl. “She is my biggest cheerleader and the brains behind all business activities.” He also credits Jessica with encouraging him to go into the field of chiropractic care. Jessica had worked in chiropractic offices and knew her husband wanted to pursue something in the medical field. “She told me she thought I would be great at it,” said Dr. Steidl. “She planted the seed.”
Steidl Family Chiropractic prides itself on giving each and every patient 110 percent and getting them to feel better in the least amount of time possible so they can return to their normal daily routine. And while some chiropractic clinics do not bill insurance, Steidl Family Chiropractic does accept some insurance and Medicare and Medicaid. “We also have an affordable cash price which surprises some people as it is often just a little more than what an insurance co-pay costs these days”, says Steidl. “Medicare and Medicaid patients need to know too that they do not require a referral to get chiropractic care, they can just call us and come in.”
Dr. Steidl is pleased to be back in Sandpoint and has already integrated himself into the volunteer community. A self-proclaimed sports fanatic, Dr. Steidl coached Kick Start Soccer this spring. “What a blast it is to coach two to four year olds. It’s a riot!” he exclaimed. He also was selected to be the director of the Rec League Soccer program that takes place in both the fall and winter.
While chiropractic care used to be a treatment that few pursued, the last several years there has been a sharp increase in those opting for chiropractic treatments and seeing relief from a multitude of symptoms. In fact, Dr. Steidl shares that one may be surprised to learn that chiropractic care has helped improve the discomfort of pregnant women and may help improve childhood conditions such as colic and ear infections. “We can get results and improve patients’ symptoms,” he said.
Steidl Family Chiropractic welcomes people of all ages to contact them. They look forward to being your partner in wellness!

While he has been practicing in Sandpoint since September of last year, Dr. Steidl moved to his new location at 1205 Highway 2 in April and opened under the name of Steidl Family Chiropractic, a reflection of his desire to help patients from newborns to seniors.

AS AMERICAN ADULTS, many of us feel we lead some of the most stressful lives. Getting bills paid, shuttling kids back and forth to sports and activities, planning holidays, keeping organized, all while balancing professional and family life. We often wish to go back to those carefree days of youth when stress was not a word in our expanding vocabulary, and we enjoyed time with friends and the simple things in life. According to local nonprofit founder Lindy Lewis, those carefree days today aren’t exactly what they seem. “The number one concern I hear from kids is about their future,” explained Lewis. “These kids are missing the here and now because they are so concerned about what’s happening next.” Lewis founded Underground Kindness as an organization to help local teens manage stress and anxiety and ultimately lead happier lives. Lewis’s own life experiences are what got her on a path to helping others. A self-admitted alpha
woman, Lewis held a number of positions in corporate settings, including fundraising and sponsorships. A series of events, including divorce and a multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis, changed her outlook on what is ultimately important in life. Suddenly a single mother of three battling MS, Lewis realized she needed to reprioritize her life. “My life went sideways very quickly, and I made the decision to take care of myself,” said Lewis. She began taking yoga classes. She noticed improvement in her health and well being, and after hearing such stress from local teens, decided to help. way to get rid of added stress, help her sleep and help her body heal itself. What started as a supplement to physical education classes, Underground Kindness now provides classes featuring multiple levels of personal well being at local schools. Underground Kindness introduces local young people to yoga and meditation alongside programs that focus on both physical and mental well being.
SandpointLivingLocal.com
35
Lewis has been living with MS for 11 years now and credits the skills she has learned in helping her deal with the disease. “I’ve done very well living with MS. I choose to slow down, practice movements, relax, and not worry so much about the external that I can’t control,” said Lewis. These are the core practices taught through Underground Kindness. In physical activities such as yoga and meditation, students stay after school when many would otherwise go home and be sedentary. The physical activity encourages weight loss and builds strength while decreasing stress and anxiety. Personal awareness classes teach students to become aware of their dreams, desires and uncertainties and ultimately learn the best way to process these thoughts. In emotional health, students are taught to slow down and focus on the present and learn skills to eliminate anxiety whether from an upcoming test, dealing with bullying, or planning for their future. Over the past four years many in the Sandpoint community have become aware of this unique organization helping kids and there are now volunteers from all kinds of backgrounds. These “compassionists” help spread the message and also work directly within our local schools. Their backgrounds and specialties include therapy, nutrition, chiropractic, artistic, personal training, physical therapy and more. These compassionists also get to work firsthand with local teachers and see the relatively new challenges they face today with technology, social media and the continued pressures of good grades. With so many local professionals working within the group, students get a well rounded look at health and learn many different ways to cope with stress and anxiety. As the organization continues to expand, Lewis was recently able to hire a director to run the day-today operations of Underground Kindness. Since
joining, Kate Lyster has seen firsthand the effects these classes have on our local young people. “As I settled in my new position and began sitting in on Underground Kindness classes inside the middle and high schools, I realized not only Underground Kindness’ impact, but the world that our children live in,” said Lyster. “Our children need to learn the coping skills required to navigate their young lives, and I believe Underground Kindness is working to bridge the gap among teachers, community and students.” Like with most teenagers, getting a group to open up about their feelings and try new things can initially be a challenge, but Underground Kindness has found that once the ice is broken just about everyone who has taken a class would recommend it to a friend. “With sharing comes the realization that they might not be alone in their struggles and that other students are experiencing their own challenges,” said Lyster. “I love seeing how well they develop and build coping methods and how much a young person can change so quickly,” adds Lewis. While the program was just recently introduced to 7th and 8th graders, Lewis hopes to soon expand Underground Kindness into local elementary schools as well. The organization is working within the Clark Fork schools and Lewis hopes to see other regional communities develop as well. “It’s a very easy program to drop into any community, and it would be wonderful to see other communities work together to support each other,” said Lewis. A fundraiser for Underground Kindness is

coming up on July 22nd. The Shangri La on the Lake features a barbecue dinner provided by Ivano’s Ristorante as well as drinks along the shores of Lake Pend Oreille. There is live music and dancing as well as live and silent auctions and the event is family friendly. Proceeds from the event will go toward expanding into other districts, elementary schools and the Juvenile Justice Center. Last school year Underground Kindness taught 370 classes and hopes to continue expanding these options. One of those recent expansions was launched in March as a parent connection class. These classes invited parents to come in and experience what their sons and daughters are learning as well. “The parent engagement and participation has been refreshing, and we are working hard to bring value to the parents and children of this community with quality guest speakers and workshops that actually provide real-world answers and tools that parents can apply in their own daily lives,” said Lyster. Stress and anxiety are not just adult problems; both internal and external pressures placed on teens today can lead to poor well being. It is the goal of Underground Kindness to teach kids what is important in life, to slow down and enjoy the moment, and to eliminate anxiety through physical and emotional wellbeing. “I remember having a lot of fun in high school, and I don’t see that in kids today. We want them to enjoy this special time in their lives and not be so concerned with the future,” said Lewis. “Through Underground Kindness students learn small easy techniques to help them cope and enjoy life without so much anxiety.” For more information or if you would like to get involved visit www.undergroundkindness.org.

A Bulldog SCHOLAR-ATHLETES is Only As BALDREE Strong As CODY & MATTHEW CURTISS His Bite! BY PATTY HUTCHENS
CODY BALDREE: GROWING UP FOR MOST of her life in Arizona, Cody Baldree did not initially have the desire to pursue softball. “I used to make the excuse that it would ‘be too hot, wearing those long pants’ in the Arizona heat...But my dad got me to play, and I just went from there,” said the Sandpoint senior. Since moving to Idaho, Cody has played for Sandpoint High School as well as with North Idaho Xtreme for three years. The Xtreme was nationally ranked as a top five team by USA Preps.

But it’s not just on the softball field where Cody excels. “Academically, I am fourth in my class and have made honor roll every year! I am also an active member of National Honor Society and HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America),” said Cody. In the fall Cody will attend Chapman University in Orange City, California where she will study molecular biology. “I have not decided yet if I will play in college, but Chapman has a softball team that competes at the D3 level, so it is a plausible opportunity,” she said, adding that one day she would like to participate in the Peace Corps and travel overseas.

When asked what she enjoys most about softball, Cody said it was difficult to pick just one aspect. “It really is just the game itself. I have always loved playing,” said Cody. “In the end, it has been the opportunities that softball has given me, including traveling across the country for tournaments, meeting world renowned coaches, and making incredible friendships, as well as learning tools to help me in the future.”

He has excelled in tennis and won districts this year with doubles partner Patrick Rockwell. They went onto State where they beat Blackfoot 6-4, 6-1 before losing to Century. It was quite an impressive accomplishment, especially considering Matthew has only played tennis for 18 months.

And when asked what he enjoys most about sports, Matthew turns to his love of basketball and says it is the competitive and intense aspect of the game.

Supporting Students Supporting Sandpoint with NIC foundation scholarships • By Jani Gonzalez THE RECIPIENTS OF NEW scholarships created to support aerospace education in northern Idaho have been awarded to three nontraditional students in the name of increasing awareness about the growing aviation industry and its associated economic opportunities in the region. North Idaho College Foundation member, Barney
Ballard and his wife Carol, are the impetus behind the scholarships created last year for students studying at NIC’s Aerospace Center in Hayden. “The idea was to have scholarships and provide support for IT (Information Technology), healthcare and the aerospace industry. Aerospace, in particular, is our focus and has immediate job openings for trained students,” Ballard explained.

He and his wife are the former owners of the Tango Café in Sandpoint. The community rallied behind an effort to make NIC more accessible to residents in Sandpoint and helped fund a wet science laboratory. “The purpose was so that students wouldn’t have to go to Coeur d’Alene for certain classes,” he said. The Sandpoint Urban Renewal Association (SURA) was instrumental in bringing the college outreach center into the downtown. The new scholarships have helped three Sandpoint NIC aerospace students get started or complete their studies. Some of the money has helped finance commutes from Sandpoint to Hayden or pay for schooling while full time employment is on hold during the program. The scholarships honor a great pilot and other noteworthy aviators who contributed to the aviation tradition.
The Chris “Boomer” Wilson Scholarship The Chris Wilson Scholarship is named for a distinguished pilot from Hope who is immortalized in the character of “Viper” in the 1986 movie “Top Gun.” The first recipient of this award went to now new graduate, Allen Stahlman, 48, of Sandpoint. The scholarship helped him finish the program and commute from Sandpoint to the Aerospace Center in Hayden. He first learned about the program from a high school counselor who tried to introduce his fiancé’s son to the program. “I looked at one of the brochures and got interested, and I’m glad I did. It’s opened doors for me,” he said. Stahlman overcame many hurdles to graduate. The former carnival worker knew he needed to increase his employment options in a small town. He went back to school and tackled NIC’s Bachelor of the Arts and Sciences and Applied Technology. Last year, he lost his daughter, and this spring he required surgery, but Stahlman continued his studies throughout. He has completed his Associates in Science and
“I graduated high school in 1986 and never thought I’d go back to school. It’s been hard, but it was something I wanted to do … I didn’t just want to pass – I wanted to make the Dean’s List,” Stahlman said. He achieved his goal, graduating with a near 4.0 and is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa National Honors Society. “I’m proof that it’s never too late to go back to school. You just have to be committed,” he said. Although he has some concerns about being hired as an older worker, he knows his perseverance will get him to where he wants to be in the aeronautics industry. “I can do the job as well as any other,” he said. inspired flight a senior in Clark Fork High School in the Pathways to Technology in Early College High School (PTECH), which gave her insight into other careers where she could work with her hands. She took online classes in composites while still in high school. In the fall of 2015, she began NIC’s Aviation Maintenance Technology program. “At first I was interested in the medical field, but I was raised like a tomboy, fixing cars. An airplane is not the same as a car, but I thought, ‘Why not?’ I was more interested in the hands on aspect. Other than that, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do,” Vandenhouten said. She said the scholarship has helped her move closer to Hayden as well as with paying for the tools and classes. Eventually, Vandenhouten would like to work for local aerospace companies, Quest Aircraft or Empire Airlines, which she visited while a student at PTECH. The program is demanding, making full time employment anywhere difficult to manage, but she knows the program will eventually reward her with a position she’ll enjoy. “It’s been challenging, but it will be worth it in the end. It’s helped me to better myself and helped me with room and board and cut my commute time,” she said.
Elizabeth “Bessie” Coleman / Tuskegee Airman Scholarship With the Elizabeth “Bessie” Coleman / Tuskegee Airman Scholarship, Ballard wanted to honor the first black female aviator in the U.S. The scholarship’s name is also a nod to the Tuskegee Airmen, the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group of the U.S. Air Forces, who were a group of black combat pilots in World War II. “The ‘Bessie’ Coleman / Tuskegee Airman was named with the intention of the broader elements in our society who have contributed so much to aviation and who have overcome hurdles through persistent effort,” Ballard said. Jennifer Treman of Sandpoint is the mother of two boys pursuing her interest in aviation after ten years. Initially, she wanted to become a pilot but decided that her job prospects would increase as a mechanic. The scholarship has helped her and her husband while she is in the program. “This scholarship really helps to fill in while I can’t provide,” Treman said. She commutes from Sandpoint to Hayden four days per week. When she completes the program in August, she’ll be eligible to take the Federal Aviation Association’s (FAA) licensing examination to become an aircraft maintenance technician. So far, she has a 4.0 in the program.

Treman, 28, who speaks Japanese, has her sights set on working for Quest Aircraft after she’s graduated. The company was recently purchased by a Japanese company which could make it a good fit for her. “I’m half Japanese and can speak, read and write it. I think I’d be well suited for it,” she said. She and Vandenhouten are the only women in the program, and she too was raised as a tomboy. Prior to entering NIC, Treman worked for five years in a small machine shop in Ponderay and was the only woman there. “I prefer that environment more – to play with the tools and be one of the guys,” she said. Scholarships to show an increased presence of aerospace industry Although the region’s supply of aerospace jobs is limited, Ballard sees the field expanding and hopes that the scholarships will help others see that opportunities are growing in the area. “The total picture is that this is a college aviation program and that the field is expanding – that you can succeed in life with a technical education skill. We also hope to find further community support for these scholarships to encourage the nontraditional students in creating opportunities,” Ballard said.

A SMALL TOWN FAMILY’S
ADVENTURES ABROAD
Article and photos by Kim Roth I’m a homebody. I like routine and vanilla ice cream. So when my husband’s company offered him a position to work in Denmark for a year, I was hesitant. My need for certainty, however, gave way to an uncharacteristic wonder to see what a year in Denmark, and Europe, could offer my family. For our family’s benefit, my husband and I decided to make the move. In August 2014, we made a spectacle of ourselves as we left our home in Rathdrum, Idaho, bound for Copenhagen, Denmark with five children and 28 pieces of luggage. It wasn’t easy living abroad. Unlike a long vacation, it was everyday life—but in a foreign country. We went to school and work, paid bills, shopped for groceries, dealt with home repairs, and lived the ups and downs every family experiences. We also had unique challenges made more difficult by our being in a foreign country—identity theft, illness, the death of a loved one, homesickness and sending our oldest to college. With the language barrier and our foreign surroundings, these were difficult times. But that foreign aspect is also what made our experiences that year enlightening. Being surrounded by language, food and culture different from our own taught us a great deal. Perhaps it was a combination of our struggles and our increased appreciation for people and places that allowed Denmark to change us. It became a chapter of life we will always savor. The first time I went to our neighborhood grocery store in Denmark, I nearly cried. I walked through a very small produce and meat and cheese section, saw a few shelves of bread and pasta, and some miscellaneous items I couldn’t make sense of because of the Danish labelling. That was it. I thought, “What am I going to feed my family for the next year?” Those initial weeks were tough on my kids, but we also had a few laughs as we learned to bake in a Centigrade

oven, use a translation app to buy ingredients and live without the pre-made mixes, condensed soups and favorite snacks readily available in the States. Another big part of our adjustment was learning the unwritten rules of bike lanes and navigating bus and train routes. Of course, this kind of Danish street smarts didn’t come without lots of mistakes. We hopped on the wrong train more than once, missed buses and nearly got hit by bikers, but we figured it out. The day I noticed my 7-yearold son look over his shoulder before stepping into the bike lane, I thought “Wow. We’ve come a long way.” Living in Copenhagen, in fact, is pretty doable. The Danes speak very good English, and each person we met seemed interested in us and happy we were living in their country. Several of our neighbors and co-workers invited our family to their homes to share traditional Danish meals and customs. These were some of our favorite times! Getting to know Danish culture through their hospitality, focus on meaningful conversation and appreciation for other people taught us much. Going to school in Denmark was a great opportunity for our kids. Our daughter attended a Danish high school, “Gymnasium,” which taught the International Baccalaureate curriculum in English. Hers was a very rigorous academic experience. She worked hard and benefitted from the global perspective she gained in many subjects. Studying the American Revolution from a British textbook and discussing current world events in classrooms where vast cultural diversity was represented proved to be a fantastic education for her. Our boys attended an international school which exposed them to people from all over the world. Their classmates and

teachers were from Nepal, Lithuania, Russia, Zimbabwe, Ukraine, Scotland and many other countries. Most of the students were fluent in several languages and many wore traditional clothing from their homelands. Playing games on the playground and even seeing what peers brought for lunch was educational. Yet it was so natural for these children to play together! They gave no thought to political, economic or religious differences. They simply enjoyed each other. Fieldtrips were a favorite part of school for our kids. Fieldtrips are considered an important part of education in Denmark. So when our son studied about the late King of Denmark, Christian IV, he and his class rode a train into Copenhagen to visit a historical museum and castle where the king once lived. When our daughter’s history class studied World War II, they went on a three-day field trip to Berlin, Germany. Our children also attended field trips across Denmark and to London and Sweden.
Learning Danish was a slow, difficult process. My husband and I ultimately learned a few important phrases, how to pay bills in Danish, how to read train routes and food labels, but that was about it. Our kids did better. They learned Danish in school and also practiced with friends at church and on sports teams. Our Danish friends appreciated every effort we made, though. One Sunday in a church class my son asked, in Danish, to sing a certain song. The teacher was delighted and exclaimed to me, “He said it in Danish!” One of my favorite aspects of living in Denmark was being able to take our children to see a little of the world. Travel is significantly less expensive and, in fact, a way of life in Denmark. The Danish work week is a true 37 hours and five weeks of paid vacation is standard. With this, it has developed a culture where travel is a priority. We readily welcomed this piece of Danish culture into our own and traveled as much as possible.

In addition to the family field trips we made to see historic castles, museums, jousting matches and natural wonders within Denmark, we also visited several nearby countries. We made a two-week road trip through Germany, France, Belgium and The Netherlands. All seven of us and our luggage squished into a tiny Europeansized car and took in as many sites and as much culture and traditional foods as we could. We also spent weekends exploring Sweden, Norway and London. We topped it all off with a ski trip to Austria and a week of summer vacationing in Tuscany, Italy. It was so rewarding to explore these cultures and places with our children! I loved seeing them grow in their appreciation for things that are different. I enjoyed watching

them develop travel smarts—getting in and out of airports, navigating train routes and buying food in new cities where we didn’t speak the language. I loved seeing them grow accustomed to hearing other languages other than English and being with people outside of our own culture. Interacting with locals in these places made for some charming memories—like the chocolatier in Belgium who had us all laughing as he guided us through what he claimed would be our first taste of real chocolate. Our children’s education in global awareness and acceptance was beyond what we could have hoped for. Through these experiences, we also learned
much about each other. Travel is a lot of work and takes a certain amount of tolerance when in a large group—particularly one like ours that spanned ages from 40 to 7 years old. There is so much waiting, walking, confusion, decision-making and sometimes disappointment involved in travel. It is certainly not always a vacation. I have been tired enough to sleep on a stone step, sit down on a crowded escalator, and pay $5 for a small bottle of water. Yet, travel for us was a process of learning to appreciate not only new cultures, but one another as well. We took time to play tag with my 7-year-old at a playground below the steps to the Sacre Coeur in Paris, and he patiently waited for

GRATITUDE
Dad to read every plaque at the Resistance Museum in Amsterdam. By the end of our year exploring Europe, we were changed travelers. Amidst our travels, of course, were moments of true vacationing. Getting away from the crowds to admire the work of street artists while savoring every last bite of a fresh Parisian crepe, chasing waves on the Italian Riviera, drinking hot chocolate atop the Kitzbühel ski resort while taking in the stunning view of the surrounding Austrian Alps are just a
few examples of the breath-taking moments of real vacationing we will always savor. In these moments, we had to consciously pause to absorb it all—the people, the language, the architecture, the food and the nature. In both grand and simple ways, these moments presented themselves. What a remarkable opportunity to not only teach, but show our children that the world and its people are amazing! Danes are considered to be some of the

happiest people in the world. It’s hard to articulate exactly why this is. But when you’re with them, you feel it. Danes have a real contentedness about them. For example, a great day for a Dane is to leave work on time, bicycle home, and spend a cozy evening eating and talking with family. Danes call this “hygge” (pronounced hewgga). Hygge is a word that doesn’t truly translate into English. It means cozy, intimate, meaningful time spent together with family and friends. Danes seek out and create hygge. They strive for it during the dark

06 winter months by lighting candles, chatting in front of the fireplace, or strolling with friends through a Christmas market. In the summer, hygge involves picnicking and enjoying each other at parks and beaches. Nothing more is required for Danes to truly enjoy themselves. No entertainment or schedule is needed. Hygge is neither expensive nor elaborate. It’s this appreciation for each other and simple moments shared that gives Danes happiness. I love this about them. The hardest part of our time in Denmark was saying goodbye. Despite the challenges and homesickness, we were all sad to leave. I was glad we were sad, though. It meant we had opened our hearts to Denmark and made it a second home. What made it hard to leave was the people. We learned a lot from them. We learned the value of balance in life. We were inspired by how they are driven−not by being entertained or competitive−but by contentedness. The Danes taught us this, and it has changed us.
LIVING
We’re happy to have returned home to North Idaho, though. Living abroad taught us to see the good in our own country and culture with greater appreciation. When we returned, my youngest realized he had forgotten the Pledge of Allegiance. I was so pleased to witness his determination to relearn it. It was important to him that he know this statement of allegiance to his country. How thrilled I was to see that his exposure to other countries and people had not come at the expense of gratitude for his own! In fact, this exposure had strengthened his appreciation. We’ll forever be grateful for this Danish chapter of our lives. Life is full of experiences you live for only a short while but remember for a lifetime. This is Denmark for us.

Your Body is a Wonder Lab
The core principles to optimize wellness. By Keira Barr, MD, Better Gym Gig Harbor
AS A PHYSICIAN TRAINED in the scientific method, I spent years immersed in the key elements of conducting experiments: making observations, developing testable predictions, gathering data to test these predictions, and then refining, altering or rejecting the hypotheses to come to a conclusion. Simply put, as scientists we research actions and reactions. While most scientific experiments are conducted in private labs or clinical settings, you, yes, YOU, have VIP access to the most precious lab ever created: your body. That’s right. your body is a living lab in which experiments are conducted on a daily basis. From the foods you eat, to the personal care products you use on your body, to the way
you move, sleep, interact with co-workers, friends and family; you are generating and processing data constantly. The way you feel as a result of these experiences and interactions can guide whether you iterate or pivot your behaviors or repeat them to make them habits. The pressures of modern daily living — busy schedules, demands of work, limited family or personal time, inadequate rest, environmental challenges — all of it can lead to a life thrown out of balance and cause a disturbance of our natural equilibrium. As a result, many of us feel like we are holding on by a single thread on most days and regardless of how we feel, we take the path of least resistance and repeat behaviors that

The key to experimentation is to appreciate that there is no bad data. You learn something from every experiment. If you feel improvement, take note and expand on that. If you try something and feel terrible, good news, you’ve gained valuable insight enabling you to pivot and try something else.
create habits which adversely affect our overall health. I get it. I’ve done it too. Habit trumps behavior change because it’s easier, it’s familiar, it’s faster. But here’s the thing, habit can be making you sick, exhausted and unpleasant to be around. Nobody likes a grouch. Just sayin’. So now what? It’s time to plan some experiments. There are four core principles that pave the way to experiencing and maintaining optimal wellness which include: 1. Eating well 2. Being active 3. Restorative sleep 4. Stress management The interpretation of each of these principles is highly personalized, as well it should be to fit your lifestyle, however there are basic guidelines which I will outline to increase the likelihood of fruitful experiments. 1. Eating well = eating real food. Translation: Nothing man-made or manufactured. If you can’t pronounce the ingredients on the label, put it back on the shelf. If you don’t know what it is, your body doesn’t either and can’t process it efficiently or effectively. Choose whole foods as they occur in nature, cook with fresh herbs, and have fun eating the colors of the rainbow. 2. Being active = just move. Go for a walk, take a fitness class, put on your favorite song and dance around the room. It doesn’t have to be a formal practice, the key is to just do it.
3. Sleep = precious resource that most of us overlook. Abnormal circadian rhythms have been associated with obesity, diabetes, depression, seasonal affective disorder and immune suppression. Catching some z’s is the best preventative medicine. 4. Stress management = making space for you. Taking time to nourish your passion, connect with friends, spend time with family is not selfish; it’s self-preservation. Make it a priority. So here’s where the magic happens. Put on your virtual lab coat, as a scientist of your own body lab you can research your daily actions and reactions. Observe how you feel: mind, body and skin. As your largest organ, your skin is a window to your underlying health, so take notice of the texture, the turgor and color as you explore the core principles. Take your data points to generate your own questions like: if I replace soda with water will my energy level change? If I dial my bedtime down by an hour every night, how will this impact my productivity? The key to experimentation is to appreciate that there is no bad data. You learn something from every experiment. If you feel improvement, take note and expand on that. If you try something and feel terrible, good news, you’ve gained valuable insight enabling you to pivot and try something else. It’s easy and understandable to get frustrated when you don’t get the results you predicted or hoped for, but don’t give up, simply adjust or refine your method. Enjoy the process!

UNDERSTANDING FIBROMYALGIA BY RYANNE LEMON, PTA, ACE PERSONAL TRAINER, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY
H E A LT H Y T I P GET RELIEF SCIENTISTS ESTIMATE that over 5 million Americans over the age of 18 suffer from Fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia is a relatively new diagnosis to the medical community and was first recognized and defined in 1990. It can present itself in many different ways, but is generally classified by one or more symptoms of pain, fatigue, memory and concentration deficits, sleep disorders, exercise difficulties, irritable bowel (IBS), chronic headache, jaw pain (TMJ), and sometimes miscellaneous symptoms such as edema, vertigo, bladder problems or chemical sensitivities. Symptoms are usually chronic, and are usually aggravated by factors such as weather changes, hormonal fluctuations, stress, depression, anxiety, over-exertion and lack of sleep. What causes Fibromyalgia? There is no real known cause for Fibromyalgia, but it is generally understood to be an abnormal reaction to stress in which the body’s central nervous system is on overdrive in response to pain. The cause of this phenomenon is unknown, but may be related to periods of chronic stress or chronic injury in which the body’s natural anti-inflammatory response become out of balance causing disruption in cortisone levels as well as other natural produced pain relieving hormones. It has been proven in numerous studies that people under high stress will have higher reported pain levels from the same noxious stimuli than people in a relaxed state. Stress makes pain hurt more, and pain causes stress. Lack of sleep also causes stress and higher pain levels, which can contribute to further lack of sleep. This is one reason why it is very difficult to treat fibromyalgia with the symptoms contributing to the cause. Treating Fibromyalgia There are many different treatment options for Fibromyalgia, with no one treatment

being better than another. Usually treatment effectiveness is personal to the patient, and a combination of treatments may be the best option. Some common treatments include, but are not limited to: Dietary changes - There is a Fibromyalgia diet which may vary from person to person, but generally involves the elimination of food that may trigger inflammation such as sugar, caffeine, alcohol, fried foods, red meat, highly processed food and in some cases, gluten. Medication - Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help reduce inflammation, but may cause increased GI disturbances. Prescription pain medication, sleep aids, anti depression and anti anxiety medication can also provide patient with relief from symptoms.
Sandpoint’s Only Full Size Warm Water Therapy Pool
Physical therapy - Exercises prescribed by a skilled therapist can provide relief for most fibromyalgia patients. Aquatic therapy has been shown to be one of the most effective treatment options for patients with the disease due to the muscle relaxation and anti inflammatory or edema reduction quality of being in water. Acupuncture - If a patient can tolerate the needles, acupuncture has been shown as very effective for pain relief and stress relief, as well as aiding in natural healing. Any other stress relieving technique Meditation, yoga and other exercise, faith based activities, or any other activity that helps an individual with relaxation and reduced anxiety and depression. Fibromyalgia can be a very debilitating illness, and it is important to be patient and understanding with friends or family who may suffer from the disease. Recovery may be slow and difficult, but love and support can foster well-being which helps with the healing process.

HEALTHY TIDBITS NEWS FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE BY DR. WILL MIHIN
GHE E TT AI LNTG HEYN OTUI GPH
“There are two ways to get enough. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less.” ~ G.K. Chesterton MENTAL ATTITUDE: Depression Treatment May Reduce Heart Disease Risks. A study that was reported at the American College of Cardiology meeting in April of 2016 involved 7,550 people and found that effectively treating depression can lower a patient’s risks for cardiovascular disease to the level of those who never had depression, reducing their chances of stroke, heart attack, heart failure, and early death The study’s author Dr. Heidi May notes, “Our study shows that prompt, effective treatment of depression appears to improve the risk of poor heart health.” Health Alert: Diabetes Has Quadrupled Worldwide Since 1980. According to a new report in The Lancet in April of this year, the number of men and women diagnosed with diabetes around the globe increased from 108 million in 1980 to 422 million in 2014, with the most severe increases noted in low- and middle-income countries. Experts say these findings should sound an alarm for large-scale, effective action that focuses on reducing the
health and economic impact of diabetes. Diet: The Good & Bad News About Higher Calcium Intake. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as reported by The Endocrine Society in April 2016, men ages 51 to 70 should consume 1,000 mg of calcium daily, increasing to 1,200 mg at age 71. NIH experts also recommend that women take in 1,200 mg of calcium daily starting at age 51. In a new study, a research team analyzed the calcium intake as well as the heart disease, stroke and fracture risk of 2,199 men and 2,704 women over 50 years of age. The team found that participants who had a higher calcium intake had a significantly lower risk of cardiovascular disease than those with a lower calcium intake; however, the analysis found the risk of fracture or stroke did not significantly decrease among those with a higher calcium intake. Exercise: Exercise May Protect You Against Cancer. According to a report in the March 2016 issue of Cell Metabolism, exercise may decrease cancer incidence and slow the rate

of tumor growth. A new animal-based study found that mice trained to use an exercise wheel had a lower risk of developing cancer, and those that did develop cancer had tumors that grew at a reduced rate compared with the tumors of sedentary mice. The authors of the study add that the anti-cancer benefits of running are most likely linked to the release of adrenaline that leads to the mobilization of specific immune cells that patrol the body and help fight cancer. Alternative Medicine: More Chiropractors, Less Opioids. Based on data collected in 2011, a new study has found an association between both a higher per-capita supply of chiropractors and Medicare spending on chiropractic care and lower opioid prescription use among younger, disabled Medicare beneficiaries. Opioids are a type of narcotic pain medication that can have serious side effects and can lead to abuse and dependence. The finding as reported in the Journal of Manipulative Physiological Therapeutics in March of this
year, suggests that chiropractic care may help reduce the need for this potentially dangerous class of medication.

Camping Gear
Away from the city.
What to bring camping really depends upon how long and how far out you’re going. If you’re spending the night at a drive-up campsite, pack all you can fit in your car. If your destination is the backcountry, keeping weight at a minimum is critical. No matter where you camp, be sure to include on your checklist the following: tent, sleeping bag, light source, fire starter, warm clothing, sunscreen, first aid kit, knife and plenty of food and water. Camp stoves are great for feeding big groups, while backpackers enjoy the convenience and practicality of lightweight and foldable camp cookware.

Hiking Gear Hike and be happy. Hiking is all about your feet so make sure your boots fit properly. Once you have your boots fitted, choose a pack that’s right for you, something small and lightweight for short hikes and something a bit larger that can hold additional food, water, maps and safety equipment if you plan on being out all day. Trekking poles will help take the pressure off your legs on steeper climbs, and if you have to traverse rock faces on the trail, don’t forget a rope and even a pair of gloves if your fingers aren’t used to rock climbing.
Biking Gear Keep calm and bike on. Biking trails can vary greatly from silky smooth pavement to rough, washed out paths, and your bike should match what you ride most often. Your local dealer will help you find the best make depending on where you ride most. Clips mounted on the handle bars allow you to lock in your phone or global positioning system (GPS) so you’ll always know where you’re going. Mounts for a GoPro camera also give you a cool recap of your ride from your own perspective. Never forget the helmet no matter what surface you are riding, and cycling gloves will help keep your hands blister free.

Everyone loves a day on the water so while you’re out there why not try reeling in a few fish as well. Trolling or bobber fishing makes it easy on kids, while more advanced fishermen will look at casting banks, docks and weed lines. If trout is your goal, then give fly-fishing a serious try. While it might be difficult at first, landing a fish on a fly rod is a really cool accomplishment. Catch and release practices help make fisheries better for the next generation, so treat the fish with as little harm as possible before releasing.

Lightweight and breathable is the key to staying cool when the temperatures hit their peak during summer. Manufacturers are creating all kinds of sweat-wicking and fast-drying fabrics to keep us cool but also looking cool as well. A well-crafted pair of sandals is worth the investment, especially if you plan on walking in them all day. Light colors reflect sunlight better than dark so keep that in mind when choosing your next beach outfit. Don’t forget to swing by the swimsuit racks for the latest trends as well.

Climbing Gear
It’s within your reach.
Getting up a rock face using your own brute strength is a passion for many in the west. Each climber will tell you the key to a great day climbing is a comfortable and sturdy harness, trustworthy safety rope and a good partner. It’s never a good idea to go cheap when you’re dangling from the side of a cliff. Rocks and debris can tumble down at anytime so a helmet is also a strong recommendation. Kids can learn at climbing gyms where all the safety equipment is already in place.

Our Typical Northwest Summer... Outdoor adventure for a lifetime of weeks and weekends By Mike McAuliffe We’re two hours out of Anacortes, cruising along the rugged rocky shore of San Juan Island. I’m relaxing on the deck—lulled by the warm August afternoon sun and the water slapping a rhythmic beat on the hull of the MV Mystic Sea. My daydream ends abruptly when Captain Monte announces over the ship’s speakers, “Whales off the port side!”
PHOTOS THIS PAGE BY LISA TURNER
I spring to the railing and spot three large black dorsal fins knifing through the Puget Sound waters. The tallest triangular fin is the telltale signature of a 10,000-pound male Orca, swimming with two smaller females. Another tiny fin breaks the water, trailing behind. A baby Orca calf! The whales cruise effortlessly, churning the water into white foam. The tops of their huge ebony bodies with stark white oval eye patches glide above the surface. A menagerie of other wildlife also makes an appearance—massive Humpback whales, Harbor porpoises, sunning seals and sea lions, Bald Eagles and bobbing Rhinoceros Auklets. The amazing day is a snapshot of a typical Pacific Northwest summer day of outdoor adventure with water, wilderness and wildlife. The region’s long winters of short gray rainy days are challenging—not “less than four hours of daylight” bad like Alaska winters, but bad enough. The payoff is lengthy sunny summer days as a backdrop for relaxation and adventure in unique waters like Puget Sound, and Idaho’s

deep glassy lakes, and on the wild peaks and trails of mountains like the “American Alps,” Washington’s rugged North Cascades. Whether you have weeks of free time or just a Northwest weekend, numerous outdoor activities are always nearby. A Week on the Lake If you have a week, better yet several weeks, to enjoy the Northwest summer, there’s nowhere better than North Idaho’s trifecta of large, deep, clear lakes—Lake Pend Oreille, Lake Coeur d’Alene and Priest Lake. The lakes’ campgrounds, cabins and resorts have hosted generations of vacationers who flock back each year for time with family and friends, relaxation, sun and water activities. Start your day skiing on early morning water that’s smooth as a plate-glass window, followed by lunch and a nap in the hot sun before cooling off with a mid-day swim. Dinner could be a floating party on a pontoon boat. Rental companies in Sandpoint, Coeur d’Alene and Priest Lake’s marinas take care of your watercraft needs, including ski boats, fishing boats, pontoon boats, paddleboards, kayaks and jet skis. While there aren’t any whales in these waters, there are plenty of other big fish—a record
42-pound salmon was caught in Lake Coeur d’Alene. So bring your fishing gear, drop a line in the lake, and reel in a trout, bass or salmon for the evening barbecue. Give fly fishing a try on a nearby river, or time permitting, take a road trip for a world-class fly fishing experience on the Snake River or Henry’s Fork in Southeast Idaho. If you get tired of floating on your air mattress, there’s also plenty of adventure out of the water. Hit the trail for hiking or mountain biking at Mineral Point Trail #82 or Gold Hill Trail, or hit some golf balls at the Coeur d’Alene Resort and challenge their famous 14th hole floating green. Wild Weekends If you don’t have a week to lounge at the lake, towns on Puget Sound like Edmonds and Gig Harbor are uniquely located for weekend mini-vacations with a day of saltwater adventure and a day in Washington’s wilderness. In the North Sound, start the weekend with a Friday night feast of alder planked salmon, steaming clam chowder and a cold local microbrew on the outdoor patio at Anthony’s Beach Café in Edmonds, as the rosy sun sets behind the Olympic Mountains. On Saturday, the weekend’s water day, sail on an Orca whale watch tour—either a half-day tour from Edmonds on the speedy Chilkat Express hydrofoil, or a more leisurely all-day charter on the Mystic Sea out of Anacortes. Other options for water fun include fishing charters and boat rentals at the Edmonds
marina, or a ferry ride to Kingston to explore the Kitsap and Olympic peninsulas. For Sunday’s wilderness day, experience one of Washington’s best views at Artist Point in the “American Alps.” A scenic route on the Mt. Baker Highway winds through evergreens and maples, and ends with panoramic views of green alpine lakes, jagged North Cascades peaks, and the looming cone of Mt. Baker, the northernmost Cascade volcano. On the way up, stop at Picture Lake to snap an iconic photo of Mt. Shuksan reflected in the lake.

Bring your day pack, boots and water bottle for a walk or hike, but even if you don’t leave the parking lot, the view alone is worth the drive. Pitch your tent at the Douglas Fir and Silver Fir campgrounds on the Mt. Baker highway to extend your trip for more than just the day. A similar South Sound weekend minivacation might begin with a Friday night dinner at the Tides Tavern in Gig Harbor. Take a harbor tour from Tacoma or Gig Harbor for Saturday’s water fun, and then on Sunday visit the colorful wildflower meadows at Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park for a day hike. These are just a few examples of countless outdoor adventures to fill a lifetime of Northwest summer weeks and weekends.

Tubing
Gear
Tubing can be done leisurely, but most seem to prefer to zoom about the lake while being towed. As with any sport, it’s important to have the right gear. For tubing, you need a towable tube, heavy duty towing cables, an air pump and the right life jacket. Make sure to inspect the rope for any fraying before each use. Keep an air pump handy in case you’re out on the water and your tube needs air. When shopping for a life jacket, tell the shop owner what kind of water you’ll be tubing in (open water, lake, river, etc.) to get the right kind of jacket. Last, wear sunblock since you’ll be exposed to the sun for the day!
Wakesurfing Gear
Living near water means having a multitude of water sports available. Now is the time to spend outdoors and get a little closer to nature. Wakesurfing has fast become a hot trend in water sports. Surfers are towed behind a boat outfitted to create an “endless wave” in its wake. Do a little research or visit a local marine shop as to how to outfit your boat safely. The experts advise to use a boat with a bottom propeller. Most wakeboarding manufacturers make surfing wakeboards, ropes, vests and helmets. Know your equipment and make sure it’s made for the sport. Also read up on any related laws about it.

Sailing Gear
To safely appreciate sailing on the water, one must be fully prepared. Have a checklist and adjust it according to the time of day when you will be sailing. Some of the basic necessities are having proper charts, a float plan and notes on the day’s tides and sunset. Make sure you have sharpened knives, rigging knives and a multipurpose tool. For emergencies, have a first aid kit, type III life vests (with whistles), a flare gun or hand-held flares, a spotlight and a flashlight. Keep water and food on hand and a change of clothing. Other equipment includes a radar reflector, strobes for the life vests, a spare winch and vise-grips. You also may need wire cutters, duct tape, nylon and dacron lines and bungee cords. Check with your state laws about whether you need an inspection.
Padd leboard Gear Paddleboarding offers a strong workout while enjoying the serenity of water at your own pace. For beginners, a wider, longer board is preferable for stability and balance. Boards come in a variety of lengths, widths and thicknesses. Paddles too have their own varieties and constructions. Boarders are advised to select a paddle 6 to 10 inches above their height. You will also need a leash and a life vest should you fall off. There are a number of accessories specially designed for transporting your board, such as bags, handles and car racks.

TRAVEL & LEISURE
GLAMPING CAMPING REDEFINED ACROSS THE WEST
Levels of Glamping
BY COLIN ANDERSON
I
t’s summer and that means vacation time for most couples and families. While some travel across the country visiting big cities for shopping, historical tours, or national monuments, many in our neck of the woods head outside to enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, boating, swimming and all the other reasons we choose to call the west home. We grab the tent, sleeping bags, beat up old clothes, hot dogs and of course, the ingredients for s’mores, and get ready for a few back-breaking nights in a cold tent − or do we? A recent demand for the comforts of home while out in the woods is changing the way we see camping. Traditionalists scoff at the idea of actual beds and hot water showers in the wilderness, but “glamping” or glamorous camping is getting those who have always refused the sleeping bag and cold ground actually out in the woods and back in touch with nature. While the term “glamping” typically refers to a certain type of opulent tent camping, I see the term differently, with many levels of making your outdoor experience more than just a bare bones backpack or pulling into a roadside
campground crammed next to others. You’ll be surprised at what people are willing to pay for luxury but also at how affordable some of the options you have available to you as well. The RV/Camper This is the original glamping device getting you off the ground and into a warm, secure space. Today’s tow-behind models are made of much lighter materials than those of yesteryear, letting you tow them behind something as small as a Subaru Outback. There is also a popular movement sweeping the country of completely renovating old and worn out trailers. As long as they are structurally sound, designers are finding creative ways to maximize the small indoor space and turning them into minimobile apartments. Something as easy as reupholstering benches can really bring an old camper back to life. If you’re not looking to own, renting an RV can be something fun for the whole family. Cruise America is probably the most widely known, but there are often local choices right in your community as well. Renting an RV
SandpointLivingLocal.com
puts you in control of your completely mobile campsite and is ideal if you plan on visiting multiple sites over the course of a week or twoweek long trip. With most, you won’t need a special driving license, but plan on spending several hundred dollars per week on a rental as well as fuel costs. For those at retirement age, motor homes have never been more luxurious, and they should be as some models cost more than traditional homes. Often as long as a Greyhound bus, these chariots of the road can include everything from a king-sized bed, washer/dryer and soaking tub to expandable outdoor patio space with flat screen TVs mounted for outdoor viewing. New technology allows owners to keep both internet and satellite TV signals even while in motion. Imagine spending your retirement seeing the entire country while still enjoying the comforts of home. Our National Parks look for campground hosts throughout the year allowing you to park your RV for free in exchange for helping to run the campground.

to spoiled rotten. While there are dozens of options across the west, here are just a few to give you an idea on what to expect. Fire Lookouts While not the most glamorous of accommodations, what you are getting is some of the most spectacular scenery in the country. Before planes and infrared radar detected wildfires, it was the job of the Fire Lookout. This person manned an often isolated cabin on the highest peaks in the designated mountain range and radioed any reports of smoke sightings. Today, you can step back in time and camp inside many of the now retired Fire Lookouts throughout the west. The majority can be found in California, Idaho and Montana, but there are some available in Washington and Oregon as well. While not often advertised, these are extremely popular with some reservations even going into a lottery system. You probably won’t land a reservation this summer, but it’s never too early to start planning for summer 2017! Basic Glamping: Sweetwater Washington
Tipi,
Bainbridge
Island,
Located on a family farm and backed up to National Forest, this is a one-space glamping location giving you privacy of being alone but also not far from the city. Inside the tipi is a queen-sized memory foam bed, mini-fridge, and electrical outlets. There is a composting toilet and heated shower as well. From $175/ night.
Huckleberry Tent and Breakfast, Clark Fork, Idaho Three distinct sites dot this unique homestead in far Northern Idaho near the Montana border. You won’t find power outlets here, but you will find canvas walled tents and queensized beds, screened in kitchen area with hand pump water and a propane stove and outdoor shower and outhouse. Breakfast is served by your hosts each morning. On-site trails lead you to wonders to explore, but you’re also close enough to drive to local towns and landmarks. From $100/night Full Scale Glamping Panacea at the Canyon, Terrebonne, Oregon On 40 acres, this resort is surrounded by high desert country but provides five-star amenities. A full scale spa, pool, yoga and reiki classes encourage guests to completely relax in a natural setting. Your tent includes a king-sized bed with a plush comforter, en-suite bathroom, hardwood floors, and local organic bathroom products. All meals are included as well as a nightly foot bath with a turndown service. Guests can also go wine tasting, rock climbing or ride in a hot air balloon. From $700/night double occupancy. Paws Up, Greenough, Montana This is a place for those looking for a true Montana wilderness experience and don’t have a problem spending for it. This 37,000 acre ranch sits on some of the most beautiful

scenery in the west. Glamping tents are up to 975 square feet and include air conditioning, slate showers, heated floors, cell and internet service, and your own camping cook and butler. Guided tours include ATVs, horseback, shooting, fly fishing, and ranching. During summer months a family of four staying in a two-bedroom tent will fork out around $2,500 per night for this one-of-a-kind experience. Glamping can be as simple as getting you up off the ground or as complex as a five-star resort and across the west there is just about everything in between. The bottom line is you’ll find some place beautiful and comfortable within your budget. If the thought of sleeping on the ground, no hot shower, and swatting mosquitoes doesn’t appeal to you then perhaps glamping will. Getting outside and away from our daily lives in the city even for a weekend can help relieve stress and bring you closer to family or a loved one. Being comfortable is important to many, and glamping offers most of the comforts of home while being smack dab in the middle of the wilderness. There are no more excuses for those who say they don’t enjoy camping. You might still get a little dirty and have to swat a few bugs, but a glamping trip will keep you comfortable while enjoying the natural beauty around us.

Food & Drink Recipe
NUTRAGEOUS! REACH FOR NUTS THE NEXT TIME YOU SNACK!
ACCORDING TO THE MAYO CLINIC, eating nuts as part of your regular diet can actually be heart-healthy! The type of nut one eats is not important; almost every type of nut is packed with nutrition making it easy to follow a heart-healthy diet. Nuts, which contain unsaturated fatty acids and other nutrients, are a great snack food, too. They’re inexpensive, easy to store and easy to pack when you’re on the go. Adding nuts to your diet can also work to lower your low-density lipoprotein, otherwise known as your LDL or “bad” cholesterol, which can be one of the main causes of heart disease. And if you are at risk for developing blood clots, eating nuts can also help reduce that risk as well since their nutrients appear to improve the health of the lining of our arteries.
In addition to providing protein in our diet, nuts also provide us with the following nutrients: unsaturated fats, Omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, vitamin E, plant sterols and L-arginine.
The round, often pointed leaves of the basil plant resembles peppermint, to which it is related. Its highly fragrant leaves are used as a seasoning herb for a variety of foods but has become ever popular as the main ingredient in pesto, the mixture of basil, pine nuts and parmesan cheese.
You may also be surprised to know that eating nuts can also make your skin look supple, smooth and younger looking. In fact, nuts and seeds, particularly almonds, are a natural antiinflammatory, so they also can help treat skin disorders such as acne, psoriasis and eczema But the benefits don’t stop there. It is a fact that eating nuts such as almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, pistachios and walnuts, just to name a few, actually is beneficial to your hair and scalp. Packed into a small snack, nuts provide unsaturated fatty acids and other nutrients that will help you have a healthy scalp and in turn healthy hair. So next time you want a snack, go nuts!

SUMMER SAMPLER IS BACK! Don’t miss out on June 30! By Melody Vanhorn
COME DOWN TO FARMIN PARK on June 30 and visit with your friends as you enjoy some of Sandpoint’s prime cuisine and beverages. Sponsored by the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce, Sandpoint’s Summer Sampler is in its 11th year and features many of the area’s favorite restaurants, breweries and wineries as they come together to serve up samples of their most delectable culinary dishes, wines and brews for the public to savor.
While enjoying your samples, be sure to check out the cooking competition sponsored by Litehouse Foods. Local culinary artists will fight for the title of “Best of ” as they use their skill, spices and talent in an efforts to “outplate” their opponents.
This year’s event will run from 5 to 8pm with sample prices ranging from $1 to $7. For more information visit www.sandpointchamber. org/summersampler or contact the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce at info@sandpointchamber.com.
