WITH THE SUMMER UPON US, our calendars are filling up quickly. Before we know it, we will be asking ourselves where the time went. Before it is too late, I encourage you to take some time now to plan some special things to do with your family or friends over the next few months; make memories that you can look back on and smile! The good news is, living in the Northwest means that being adventurous does not have to cost a lot. We have so many opportunities in our own town and within a day’s drive, from the Washington Coast to Montana. Make a commitment to “think outside the box” this summer. Choose a place on the map that you have never been to and set out to explore. Whether it is a short daytrip or a drive across the mountains or the Canadian border, make it something new and adventurous. There are countless music festivals throughout our region—from Seattle to Montana—that offer many opportunities for
a road trip to enjoy some of the best music the industry has to offer. Hiking or biking is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and to get some exercise at the same time. Research different trails and find one that fits your comfort level and abilities. If you enjoy time on the water, try renting a kayak or stand-up paddle board. However you choose to spend your free time this summer, make it one to remember!

It’s Back!
But this time it’s painted
BY ANNIE NYE, INTERIOR DESIGNER AT SELKIRK GLASS AND CABINETS, A DIVISION OF PONDERAY DESIGN CENTER
S
o a couple years ago, I wrote about getting rid of the old yellowed-oak look of the 90s. Guess what? It’s back! No, no, not the yellowed look of the 90s, but oak is back—only this time, the updated oak look is a painted oak. Cabinet companies are starting to introduce this new painted look, but instead of a satin, smooth surface, designers are liking the textured wood-grain look with matte paint, which really highlights the oak graining of the wood. So, if you’ve been holding on to the oak cabinets in your house because you just didn’t know where to start with updating, now you have a starting point. However, you can’t just paint the oak cabinets you have and expect to have the same results. The wood graining on your existing cabinets is covered in polyurethane or lacquer, so if you paint that, and especially if you use a matte paint, it will highlight any uneven surfaces, and they will end up looking splotchy. Your cabinets will need to be sanded down, possibly wire

brushed to get the graining to stand up a bit, and then you can paint them to get that similar look that’s in style right now. Enlisting a professional painter is probably a must, but if you want to try it, start with the back of a cabinet door to see how good you can make it look before you take off all your doors and have a project you wish you would never have started. Matte is in. Even the countertop companies are doing matte finishes on most—if not all—of their countertops, and if they don’t offer it, the fabricators can change the texture from a high-gloss polished surface to a satin/leathered or honed/ matte finish with a special machining technique. The acrylic companies like Corian also offer a satin or matte finish, and laminates are starting to go that way, too. What does this mean? To me, it means that people must like cleaning off fingerprints. I would not use a matte countertop

Oak is back, baby! surface in my own house, but I also don’t like having to clean my countertops every five minutes. Matte finishes show any oil residues from cooking or even from your hands. If you set a cup of coffee on the counter, the matte finish will show the ring from your coffee mug long after the mug is in the dishwasher. Avoid going with too many matching surfaces. My recommendation is to mix textures. If you have matte cabinets, do a polished countertop. Let the polish reflect the natural light coming in through the windows, brighten the space and make the matte finish of the cabinets stand out that much more. And if you paint your cabinets, go with a contrasting flooring. By mixing the textures of matte and polish, and using contrasting colors of light and dark, you’ll avoid things being too monochromatic, even if you stay within the same color family. Providing contrast with the interior finishes also adds depth to the room and provides flexibility for future changes.

To begin with, withdrawals from traditional employer-sponsored retirement plans like these fall under the Internal Revenue Service’s “required minimum distributions” (RMD) guidelines. (You aren’t required to take these distributions from a Roth IRA.) Here are some of the key RMD points to keep in mind: • You need to take distributions by age 70 1/2. You generally should begin taking RMDs in the year in which you turn 70 1/2. If you don’t take your first RMD during that year, you must take it no later than April 1 of the following year. If you do put it off until April 1, you must take two distributions in one year. If you don’t take your RMDs on time, you may have to pay the IRS a 50-percent penalty tax on the taxable portion of your uncollected distribution—so make sure you know your dates. • You can take more than the minimum. You can withdraw more than the RMD but, as the word “required” suggests, you can’t withdraw less. • You may be able to delay RMDs in an employer’s retirement plan if you’re still working. If your employer’s retirement plan permits it, you may not have to take RMDs if you are still working and you are 70 1/2 or older. However, this exception won’t apply if you own 5 percent or more of your company.
Financial Advisor
To determine your RMD, you’ll need to use either the Uniform Lifetime Table, which is based on your life expectancy, or the Joint Life Table, if you have a spouse who is the sole beneficiary and who is more than 10 years younger. Your tax advisor can help you make this selection.
477100 Highway 95 Suite B Ponderay, ID 83852 208-255-2613 www.edwardjones.com
So, now that you know the basic rules of RMDs, you’ll need to consider their impact on your retirement income. As mentioned above, you

can certainly take out more than the RMD, but should you? If you need the extra money, then you’ll have to take it. However, when determining how much you should take beyond your RMDs, you’ll need to weigh some other factors. For one thing, if you can delay taking Social Security, you’ll get bigger checks, so you might be able to lower the amounts you take from your 401(k) and IRA. Another factor to consider is the size and composition of your investment portfolio held outside your retirement accounts. If you have a sizable amount of investments, with some of them providing regular income, you may be able to afford to take out only your RMDs, or perhaps just slightly more. On the other hand, if your 401(k) and IRA make up the vast majority of your investment holdings, you might need to rely on them much more heavily. In any case, though, you will need to establish an appropriate withdrawal rate for all your investments to ensure you won’t outlive your money. A financial professional can help you calculate this rate. Do whatever it takes to maximize your benefits from your IRA and 401(k). They’re valuable assets, so use them wisely.

Lake Pend Oreille School superintendent Shawn Woodward is impressed with Melinda and what she has been able to accomplish in her two years at the Homeschool Academy. “She has built the program from 0 students up to 80 students in less than two years. or Melinda Rossman, the fact that teaching brings something new and different each day is something that inspires her as she educates the youth at the Homeschool Academy in Sandpoint. In her second year at this non-traditional, one-room schoolhouse, Melinda teaches kindergarten through eighth grade. “Basically, I am educated to and can teach all academic subjects. My favorites are environmental science, field science, physical education, horticulture and behavior sciences,” said Melinda. “At our school, we also offer fine arts and media arts among other subjects.” She has been an educator since 1979 but not always in the traditional setting. For many years, she was a professional ski coach during the winter months and earned an examiner status. During the same period of time, Melinda was a U.S. Forest Service officer in the growing season, dealing in forest user education for 25 years. “I became a traditional educator when I retired from coaching in 2002. At that time, I redesigned my life, and I returned to graduate
Melinda said from the first day she arrived in Bonner County her life has been blessed beyond measure. “I work hard to maintain this blessing and give everything that I have to my work, my families at my school, to my mother that I care for, my animals, my property and to myself. I speak words of gratitude multiple times daily to honor what I have been given to pursue. Right now is the grandest adventure of my life,” said Melinda. While no two days are the same, Melinda said she also enjoys the fact that no two children are the same. “I love that the task of educating children is a blessed event, and I am honored to give myself to this task,” she said. “When a child glows with the joy of getting it, and I am there to witness this, it is very rewarding.” As both a teacher and a role model, Melinda said that the greatest lesson she gives to her students, or anyone she meets, is that every second is a choice, every word that you speak should spread kindness, and visualize and speak your future and move into it. “Life is a series of events that you move through and revise and redirect as needed. It is not a straight line to any one place, let alone a lifetime of places,” she said.

Seizures
Idiopathic Epilepsy
BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL
E
pilepsy is the most common neurologic (nerve) disorder diagnosed in dogs and is defined by recurrent seizures over a period of time. What is a seizure? It is the body's clinical manifestation (outward appearance) of an excess of electrical activity in the brain. There are many causes of epilepsy including brain tumors, degenerative brain disease and other brain disorders. What does a seizure look like? The prodrome or initial stage creates anxiety, irritability and clinginess—often unnoticed by the pet parent. Preictal starts the beginning of the seizure, and within seconds to minutes, the dog becomes “out of it”; he might arch his head and neck during this phase. Ictus is the obvious seizure stage within which loss of bowel and bladder control can occur as well as leg paddling/jerking. It can last seconds to minutes—or longer. The postictal phase follows and is one of the most dangerous for the pet parent because of the confused state of the patient. Dog's often become off balance, temporarily blind and sometimes aggressive. An epilepsy diagnosis is often determined by “normal” physical findings,
SandpointLivingLocal.com
labwork, MRI and neurological tests. Interestingly, seizure triggers are essentially unknown—studies point toward stress, bright lights and change in weather as instigators—but the causes are not always well defined. Do seizures cause pain? Likely no, but they certainly create worry for the pet parent. Caregivers no doubt experience stress and discomfort while watching their loved fur balls change behavior, especially during the ictal phase! Because dogs can't speak English, researchers use the human experience to shed light on the subject. Surprisingly, many people report little or no pain or discomfort after a seizure event, merely a bit of sluggishness and vacancy afterward. Epileptic seizure treatments focus on lowering the brain's “seizure threshold,” attempting to decrease the severity and number while minimizing the side effects of medications. A general practice veterinarian will likely have a variety of treatment options including medical and non-medical (nutritional and acupuncture). The veterinarian's goal is to maintain a good quality of life for the pet.
28
What to do when your pet has seizures: 1. Stay calm. 2. Document before, during and after (by video if possible) observations. Include seizure length and frequency. 3. Keep a safe distance until after the postictal phase. 4. Call your veterinarian or pet emergency hospital for direction—especially if the seizure lasts more than five minutes.

days as a paralegal and title officer helped as the attention to detail was critical as clients relied on the expertise.
Jackie Suarez relocated from North Carolina with her husband of 30 years, Carlos (aka Uncle Cha Cha), to North Idaho back in 1999 and shortly after entered the real estate arena as a full-time agent.
Jackie continued with her career and obtained her Brokers License; although she finds herself perfectly content with being an Associate Broker at Century 21. Additionally, her practice is complemented by her business partner, Ron Hanson, a life-long North Idaho resident. “He has so much knowledge pertaining to this area,” said Jackie. The duo is becoming legendary.
It should be noted that prior to launching into real estate, Jackie had a solid background that provides a great foundation for her profession. In the late 1980s, Jackie worked as a paralegal for an attorney whose practice involved title searches and real estate closings. Then, in the early 1990s, she was recruited to manage a title company. Solid credentials, right? Well, there’s more. As a young girl, and one of six children, Jackie and her family moved every several years; something precipitated by her father’s career. “Can you imagine moving six kids every two to three years? Those life experiences give me an understanding of what the client may be experiencing.” Although real estate market conditions seem to be favorable today, I asked Jackie about her experience during the recession. As she tried to refrain from being emotional, the response was gracious. “Those are some of the most grateful clients [and] the most meaningful work I have ever had.” It was an era of her career where she learned the most in a short period of time. Becoming certified in Short Sales was paramount as “the moment called for it.” Her
When I asked Jackie what she does for fun, there was a moment of hesitation as her work lately pushes the hourly spectrum. But she then reminds herself how much she likes to run the beautiful trails throughout Sandpoint. Gardening and reading are a must. Most important is time to connect with family. Also, “Guarding Sundays, that one day, is so important,” as she carves out time for reflection on what’s most important—God, family and relationships. For the future, she laid out visions of working with Carlos on their farm, connecting with the land and growing their own food to assist with a healthy lifestyle. Sandpoint, this is a professional full of gratitude and grace! Dedication, experiences, an eye for detail, family focused … Jackie Suarez, your talent has been uncovered. 208.290.5888 DiscoverSandpoint.com @JackieSuarezAssociateBroke

A locally owned and operated business, owners Brian Lambright and Joe Gish specialize in everything from portable storage sheds and cabins to garages, barns and animal shelters—whatever you can dream up. Both Brian and Joe moved to the area from Northern Indiana after being drawn in by friends and the beautiful scenery. Brian moved to Bonners Ferry in 2011, where he operated a small shed building business, and Joseph and his family moved to Sandpoint in 2013 after visiting his cousins at Millers Country Store. The two began working together and operate under Montana Shed Center, a company owned by a friend of theirs in Great Falls, Montana, which has enabled them to provide a larger inventory and selection along with their great selection of styles and options.
32
At The Shed Center, they offer a large variety of sheds, garages, barns and cabins in sizes up to 16 feet wide and 54 feet long and have a large line of self-contained FBB-certified tiny homes and portable timber-framed cabins in single, double, triple and quadruple module. “In addition, we specialize in customizing our buildings to the specific needs of our customers,” says Joe. “This is very enjoyable as we become a part of the imagination and design of many cute backyard sheds, garages, horse barns and She Sheds.”
Buildings leave their Bonners Ferry shop completely built and are delivered from Tri Cities, Washington, to West Glacier, Montana, and everywhere in between, including Canada. The company has state-ofthe-art equipment to deliver your building onto your property with minimal impact to the existing landscape. They have maneuvered them through the tightest of spaces and have delivered them through creeks, over the top of houses by crane and over fences to get them to where the client wants them. And … delivery is free on all of their utility buildings.
The team has built everything from miniature train depots to prayer chapels with tall steeples to Dr. Seuss-style chicken houses! As Joe says, “There is no building idea that is too hard or involved that our team will not tackle.”
“We are very grateful to God for the opportunity to serve this community, as well as other areas that we have sales personnel,” says Joe. “We have an excellent team of hard-working, conscientious family men that is very valuable to the success of our product and customer satisfaction.”
Brian and Joe work hard to meet all standard building codes with 16-inch framing standard, engineered floors and snow load. Their large selection of options, colors and sizes makes Montana Shed Center cutting edge in portable buildings, as well as their popular portable cabins. Their full line of services includes delivery, installation, site preparation, on-site construction and shed removal upon request.

Combating Cancer with Nature Trekkers share a common bond
BY COLIN ANDERSON PHOTOS COURTESEY OF TRUE NORTH TREKS
TNT’s belief is that connecting with the healing space found in nature and others the same age who have also been affected by cancer can help a young adult forge a new pathway beyond their disease
I
f you ask just about anyone you know or a stranger on the street if they have a friend or relative who’s battled cancer, nearly everyone will say yes. It’s the affliction felt by just about every family as it holds no discrimination of age, gender or race. Most of the stories we hear and see through media are of young children battling for their lives or of elderly adults who have fought multiple bouts or eventually lost their final battle. Stories that are not top of mind to most people are the young adults, men and women in their 20s and 30s, who are also fighting against cancer. These people are starting careers and families when a diagnosis comes down and often react differently than older adults and young children. Recognizing this need, a group of family and friends formed True North Treks as a way for young adults to come together with their peers and treat cancer with a heavy dose of nature.
“We love the mountains, lakes and trails here in our area, not only for their beauty and accessibility, but also because our elevation and terrain are more accommodating than other Western hiking locations to the cancer survivors we bring on trek with us,” said Gwen.
Scott and Gwen Victorson are founding members of the group and moved from Michigan to Sandpoint in 2006. Coming from the sparsely populated and wellforested Upper Peninsula, they found North Idaho to have all the things they loved about their previous home and instantly recognized the opportunities the surrounding wilderness provided for future treks.
First-responder trained guides bring groups of 10 to 14 on backpacking trips up to a week long. Groups trek into some of the most remote and scenic areas of the country to swim, paddle, hike, relax and share experiences with each other. There is also time each day set aside for meditation and gentle yoga, whether it’s at a lakeshore or around the evening campfire. A

True North Treks (TNT) brings 18- to 39-year-olds with cancer on outdoor trips of various lengths to parks, lakes and national forests all over the country, including North Idaho and Western Montana. TNT’s belief is that connecting with the healing space found in nature and others the same age who have also been affected by cancer can help a young adult forge a new pathway beyond their disease, beyond their treatment and beyond all the labels, assumptions, expectations, stereotypes and fears, and create new ways to find direction.

guide herself, Gwen can attest to the impact the experience has on those who participate. “I see common threads with people reflecting on feeling stronger than they knew they were, learning how to “let go” or “let it be,” feeling less angry, feeling more equipped to deal with stressful situations in a new way. Nature is good medicine and good for healing and a desire to live life in a more mindful way,” she said. It doesn’t matter the type of cancer these young adults are battling, all are welcome on treks as long as they are not undergoing active treatments due to the physical demands of the journey. Long treks consist of about a week’s time, and mini-treks are held over a long weekend for those who are unable to commit to a full week. This summer, trekkers are lined up for hiking Wyoming’s Wind River Mountains, paddling the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in Northern Minnesota, experiencing the Green River in Utah and exploring its surrounding landscape. There is also a mini-trek coming up at the end of this month that will take both survivors and caretakers into the Selkirks for day hikes and return to a lodge each night for rest and relaxation. The Selkirks are a favorite of True North Treks for their abundance of activities and relative isolation. Gwen is a veteran of many treks and is in the same age group of those battling cancer. “While I’m off getting married, vacationing, having babies and complaining about lack of sleep, a lot of my peer trek participants are

fighting for their lives. My job really gives me perspective,” she said. It’s the participants and their positive outlook and eagerness to participate that keeps Gwen smiling and excited for the next adventure. “I am inspired daily by stories and relationships fostered with not only the survivors we work with but also their strong caregiver supporters who can come on some of our treks, all of the amazing folks we work with and the donors who make this all possible.” Demand for these trips is high, and there are only a handful of openings available this summer. If you or someone you know is in this age group, battling cancer and would like to participate, you’ll find all the information you’ll need at TrueNorthTreks.org. The organization continues to expand and is testing out even shorter ‘micro-treks’ and also boasts a team of survivors who enters the grueling Spartan Beast Race each year in Eureka, Montana. A new documentary titled Plan B for Dreamland will be out shortly. This moving piece will highlight the complex realities that young adults with cancer face and the powerful roles of nature, peer connection and mindful awareness in forging a new path as a survivor. Cancer does not just attack the young and the old but thousands of those in the middle as well. True North Treks hopes this underserved group is never forgotten because new battles with cancer begin each day.

efore the horror of Columbine High School in 1999, an “active shooter drill” was unheard of. Now, nearly 20 years later, it is not unusual to turn on the television to hear of shootings at schools, shopping malls and other public places. It is something that has the country wondering, “When will this stop and what will it take to do so?” Representing Sandpoint at the March for Our Lives Protecting our children and helping them to feel safe, whether it is from shootings, bullying or other things that threaten their well-being, is a priority not just for parents but for society in general. For a group of Sandpoint residents, it was important to them to show their support to not only children in our community, but
nationwide, especially after the students from Parkland High School began to speak. The Sandpoint group of five, which included Ben and Rhonda Tate, Sue Haynes, Sandpoint Middle School teacher Jacki Crossingham and Dan Bartlett, traveled to Washington D.C. in March to participate in the March for Our Lives. Ben Tate said there was an estimated 800,000 people who attended the march in our nation’s capital. “Nationwide, there were probably millions more,” he said, referring to the more than 800 sibling events that took place the same day. The Sandpoint residents were moved by the groups who represented many of the mass shootings in recent years including Sandy Hook Elementary School, the Orlando nightclub

shooting, the Las Vegas concert massacre, Columbine High School, the Aurora, Colorado, movie theater killing, Parkland High School, Virginia Tech and more. “Not one speaker was over the age of 17,” said Ben. “It was a very emotional three hours of gun horror stories ranging from many of our recent mass shootings to the almost routine inner-city gun violence that children witness daily. It was very sobering to say the least. I was in tears for most of the rally.” With the stories that were shared, there are some that Ben said will stay with him forever. For example, one 11-year-old from Los Angeles remarked, “I learned how to duck [bullets] before I learned to read in first grade.” Ben said regardless of political affiliation, he does

related incidents. Their new regulations have an approximate 90-percent approval rate and are a testament to what can happen when citizens are heard.”
He said one 10-year-old’s hand-drawn poster which read, “One child is worth more than all the guns in the world,” was particularly moving.
Encouraged by youth standing up and entering the discussion, Ben said there is hope. “The light at the end of the tunnel is the fact millions of under 18-year-olds will be of voting age soon,” he said. “Unfortunately, historically, only 18 percent of 18- to 20-year-olds vote. It’s critical to get them registered and to the polls.”
Listening to the youth in Washington D.C. has motivated Ben and others more than ever to do what they can to support the threat to children in our country. “When we couldn’t get anything done after the horror of Sandy Hook, I lost hope for this country and its institutions and people,” said Ben. “Australia, a gun culture like ours, managed to redeem themselves after their horrific school shooting back in 1997 with strict but fair regulations. Today, there are literally no mass shootings and very few gun-
And while for many it is a political issue that can be divisive, the reality is the ultimate goal is to protect our children and help them to feel safe. It’s astonishing to think that as of April 20, 2018, there has been on average at least one school shooting each week in 2018.

Yes, the issue of gun control is sure to bring unbridled passion on both sides of the political arena, but the immediate concern is how can we protect and support our children and what is being done in our local community to do so. Lake Pend Oreille School District’s Focus on Safety Lake Pend Oreille School District Superintendent Shawn Woodward said there have been great strides made over the last several years in the area of both staff and student safety. Each school in the district has an active safety and security team that is tasked with addressing improvements that can be made as well as specific areas of concern. Also, each school has a crisis plan that is specific to that particular school that is aimed at keeping students and staff safe while
addressing a threat in or outside a building. There is a standard response protocol for lockdowns, lockouts and evacuations, all of which are practiced by students and staff at the schools. Woodward said he and the LPOSD staff encourage the entire community to break the code of silence. Do you see something you deem suspicious in or outside of the school building? On social media? Among your child’s peer group? Report it! “We have worked hard at all levels on this via our Connections and Sources of Strength programs at the secondary level and our Second Step Social Learning curriculum at the elementary level,” shared Woodward. The district is also utilizing outside agencies to assess the potential threat of concerning actions by students. They have also utilized funding from the Idaho Safe and Drug Free Schools Grant to install beacon alert systems that will alert those not within earshot of the intercom system that a lockdown is in progress. Among other measures are safety and security audits conducted by an outside agency, single points of entry so that all traffic must travel through the school’s front entrance and a school resource officer as well as a security guard at Sandpoint High School. A huge factor in providing support comes in the area of mental health. The district recently brought back elementary school counselor positions and contract out with licensed professional counselors. “We are the first district in Idaho to also offer ‘school clinics’ in our schools,” said Woodward. “This is where outside agencies can provide consistent therapeutic sessions to students in need.” Woodward encourages parents to share these safety measures with their children. “Let them know that the schools take safety seriously, and if they see or hear about something that is concerning to them to report it to an adult,” he said.

What Parents Can Do Dr. Tim Bonine of Mountain View Family Health recently opened Mountain View Mental Health in response to a growing need for mental health services in our area. It works to meet the psychiatric need for ages 10 through adulthood, something that was severely lacking. “It became increasingly frustrating to attempt to get services for a patient only to be told that it would be a wait list of one year or more,” said Erin Bonine. “The opening of Mountain View Mental Health has brought psychiatric services to all ages and stages of life.” So just how can we as a community and as parents support our children and help them feel safe? One is to show support in every way possible. For Ben Tate, that meant gathering with friends and relatives to join the March in Washington, D.C.; showing the youth that they are not alone in this fight. As parents, Erin Bonine says it is as simple as being there for our kids. “Make sure our kids feel important. Be there to be a soft place to land when the world is tough. Be there to remember that the feelings our teens feel are very real to them,” she said. “Be there to protect them. Not just from the bully on the playground, but know their social media passwords, their friends and their teachers. Be there to be the parent they don't know they need. Don't be afraid to stand up to your teen, set boundaries and make mistakes … then show up. Show up at every school event, no matter how much you would rather not. Show up at parent teacher conferences, open houses and back-to-school nights. When in doubt, show up.”

Declan Plummer Declan Plummer enjoys sports, and it is something that keeps him busy all year round. He plays on Sandpoint High School’s football, basketball and tennis teams and, according to tennis coach, Kent Anderson, is a huge asset to the team. A junior, Declan has time to make a decision on where he will attend college and is not sure of where that will be. “I will see if I get any offers,” he said of possible athletic scholarships.

One thing that Declan is sure of is that one day he wants to own his own business. “I like to be in control,” he said.
In his words
While every sport comes with its challenges, Declan shared that the biggest hurdle he has had to face is playing quarterback. But he has been diligent and has practiced hard to achieve what he has so far. And when asked what sport it is he enjoys the most, Declan said tennis “because of the great coaching staff and the players.” He has many coaches over the years in a variety of sports, but one lesson Declan has learned that he plans to carry with him throughout his life is this: “You are either growing or you’re dying; there is no third direction.”

Allura Livingston Sandpoint High School junior Allura Livingston has been playing tennis under Coach Kent Anderson since she was in the seventh grade. She is passionate about the sport and that dedication has turned into success. She serves as one of the team captains this year and won districts her sophomore year. She was also named the Inland Empire League Player of the Year last year.
She plans to attend college after she graduates next year but has yet to decide if she will continue to play tennis at the collegiate level. One thing that Allura has learned from being involved in sports is that one must never give up. “Even if you are losing a match, there is always a chance to make a comeback,” she said. “And tennis has proved that to me many times.”
Allura shares that she loves everything about tennis from the competition to the practices and her team. One of the biggest challenges she faces is managing her time to the fullest. “Trying to have a healthy social life, keep good grades as well as better my tennis skills are all time consuming,” she said.

selected by their members. The membership as a whole decided on an education theme with the emphasis to support students on the autism spectrum.
Here in Sandpoint, there are also ways to couple your adventure with helping a good cause at the same time. The CHAFE 150 Gran Fondo – June 16, 2018 What started as a 150-mile benefit bike ride, this increasingly popular event, which draws riders from all over the country, has rapidly grown as organizers do what they can to accommodate various levels of endurance. Shortly after its inception, the CHAFE 150 added an 80-mile half CHAFE, and about four years ago the 30-mile Fun Ride was added in hopes of bringing more participants to the event. Initially, the CHAFE 150 Gran Fondo benefitted the Panhandle Alliance for Education's "Ready for Kindergarten" program to help parents support their children from age 0 to 5 prepare for kindergarten. When the Sandpoint Rotary Club took over the event from Panhandle Alliance for Education six years ago, they evaluated numerous causes that were

“Autism impacts approximately one in 68 children in the U.S. and one in 42 for boys,” said one of the organizers and Rotarian Mel Dick. This will be the last year that Lake Pend Oreille School District (LPOSD) will be the beneficiary for this ride as Rotary is now in the process of choosing a cause or causes for the 2019 through 2021 rides. One difference this year is that the rider registration fee for riders 16 years of age and younger has been reduced. “It’s $50 for the 80-mile and 150-mile rides and only $20 for the 30-mile route,” said Rotarian and committee member Elana Westphal. “The riders will receive all the same benefits.” Elana said the oldest participant last year was 87 years old, and this year that same man plans on riding the 80-mile route again. The youngest rider last year was 7 years old and rode the 30-mile route.

the final year for the fun run to take place. But that does not mean this incredible organization is going away!
“The funds are used for social and emotional growth programs for all students at Lake Pend Oreille School District with an emphasis on those students on the autism spectrum,” said Mel, who adds that last year they had approximately 350 riders and expect to reach that goal again in 2018.
“As far as other fundraisers we will be doing, the Celebrate Life team of volunteer board members is discussing what our future events will be,” said Julie Walkington, who co-founded the event with her sister, Jenny Meyer, who has since passed away from cancer 10 years ago. “There are a lot of ideas; we just need to work on details, time of year and more. We aren't going anywhere, and we will continue to serve the community as we do now. We are just changing things up.”
For years, the CHAFE 150 has been regarded as one of the most scenic rides in the country. According to Mel, feedback they continually receive includes comments about the scenic routes, the great rider breakfast, excellent rest stops and the best after-party of any ride people have participated in. Additional comments also reflect the ride jerseys as well as the amazing community support and sponsors. For more information on this great event, log onto CHAFE150.org. Jenny organized the first Celebrate Life Fun Run / Walk 15 years ago and was able to attend the first few years. A young mother battling breast cancer, Jenny knew the value of a kind gesture to someone who, like her, was struggling each day, and she wanted to do what she could to raise funds to help make their lives a little bit easier. With assistance from her sister Julie and Julie’s friend January, both of whom are nurses, the three began what has been a tradition for many each August. Since its inception, Celebrate Life has raised more than $275,000 to benefit people in the community who face life-threatening illnesses, most

of whom are battling cancer. Many of the ways they have done so have been heartwarming. Julie shares that they have assisted people by helping with airfare to bring families together one last time; helped fund a celebration party for one who has won the battle against cancer; paid for special equipment so individuals can continue lifelong hobbies; arranged to have flowers sent to a loved one on an anniversary when those facing the end of life know they won’t see that anniversary; provided travel accommodations and monetary assistance to those seeking specialized cancer treatment not available locally; assisted with paying for medications and much more.
most in her mind is how amazing it is to be able to do what they can for those affected by cancer. “We feel so honored to be able to provide some small part of assistance, provide a simple gesture with no strings attached, in their journey,” said Julie, who adds that the organization could not exist without the support from the amazing and generous community.

Put On Your Own Mask First, Then Seek to Assist Others The importance of putting yourself first By Kenny Markwardt, CSCS, Owner, CrossFit Sandpoint IF YOU’VE EVER FLOWN ON A COMMERCIAL PLANE, YOU’VE HEARD THE SAFETY SPEECH REGARDING LIFE JACKETS AND EMERGENCY EXITS. You’ve also heard and seen the demonstration about putting on your oxygen mask. At the end, they make mention that you must put on your own mask before assisting others. It’s interesting that they have to point this out. Shouldn’t it be pretty obvious that if you die or pass out due to lack of oxygen while trying to help others, that you won’t be able to help anyone at all? It probably should be, but I’d bet that nine times out of 10, most people are going to make sure their loved ones are OK before taking care of themselves. How often are you guilty of this in your everyday life? If you’re like most people I work with, the vast majority of your life revolves around the needs
of others before you take on the needs of yourself. In principle, this sounds all altruistic and warm and fuzzy. I mean, if we all just devoted our lives to helping others, wouldn’t we live in an incredible place? I’m not so sure. Think about it. If you’re absolutely elated with your life, are you better or worse in your relationships and interactions with others? I’ll answer for you. You’re better. Everyone is. But isn’t taking care of yourself first selfish? Nope. Notice I said, “Take care of yourself first,” not “Ignore everyone else and only serve yourself.” Those are two totally different practices. “But by serving myself first, I’m going to make my spouse and/or family mad at me. I can’t just devote time to getting what I need, then them. I need to continue running at full speed to provide for their needs, then in that last 20

minutes before I go to sleep, I’ll focus on me.” Hmmm. Read that again and tell me if it doesn’t sound a little crazy. Yet, I hear it all the time. “I really want to do this, but this person will be mad, jealous or resentful.” Imagine that you just did what you wanted, ignoring them for just a little bit. Would you be happier when you returned? Probably. At this point, one of two things will probably happen. One, the person you are worried about will be so supportive and happy for you that you’ll wonder why you didn’t do this sooner. Or two, they’ll be jealous and resentful. If it’s path two, they’re really toxic to your life, and you need to do everything you can to cleanse that relationship. That could be working through the issue through therapy or counseling. Or you could just do your best to cut them out of your life and never look back. By the way, if you’re not doing this on social media, you should be. Unfollow the people who make your blood boil.
I can understand that this all sounds great in principle, but execution is much harder. That’s normal. The underlying histories and complications make everything a lot more challenging. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try. The best course of action that you can take from here is to get to a place where you are mentally comfortable with taking care of yourself first. Consider all of your choices and actions from the perspective of, “I’ll be better at helping everyone else if I just do this for me first.” Just thinking that way will make you feel a lot better about things. Then start taking small actions toward making those self-care and self-interested things a reality. The underlying bonus here is that when you can do those things without guilt, you will become better at all of the things you were afraid of losing track of or feeling guilty about not fulfilling. You’ll do them with more vigor and energy that all of the people in your life will be much better off than they were when you were seemingly unselfish.

BEAUTY SLEEP Does getting enough sleep really make a difference? BRI WILLIAMS, RN, BSN, REFINED AESTHETICS MED SPA, PLLC
W
e have all heard the expression, “I need my beauty sleep,” and it turns out there is something to it. The overall length and quality of sleep that you get has a direct effect on your skin’s health and appearance. Sleeping is when our bodies recover and repair at a cellular level, and our skin rejuvenates. While we are sleeping, our skin is healed and toxins are eliminated. When your sleep habits are compromised, so, too, is your body’s capability to perform these vital functions. During the first three hours of sleep, your body begins producing HGH (Human Growth Hormone) from the pituitary gland. This hormone is essential for the preservation of youthful, healthy skin. Without it, your skin cannot be restored from daily damage. During the next couple of hours of sleep, melatonin levels are increased. Melatonin is the hormone that is in charge of regulating your sleep/wake patterns (circadian rhythm). In addition, melatonin is a powerful antioxidant that aids in the protection of your skin from damaging free radicals. Then in the final few hours of sleep (known as the active REM

When you are not getting enough sleep, the blood in your body does not flow efficiently. This creates a decrease in oxygen, which is the No. 1 cause of uneven skin tone. Lack of sleep also contributes to lower PH levels, causing dry skin, and most importantly, collagen breakdown. This causes the skin to thin, showcasing wrinkles and imperfections.

It is recommended that you get at least eight hours of sleep a night. Create a nighttime routine that promotes deep, restful sleep. Shut down electronics at least one hour before bed. Cleanse your face and perform your skincare routine nightly (never go to bed with makeup on), and sleep on high thread count sheets or satin to decrease the pulling of your skin.

patient. This includes physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. Therapy services prior to cancer treatment are sometimes referred to as “pre-habilitation.” Patients who have prehabilitation have been shown to recover more quickly from surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. This is a common practice with orthopedic operations such as hip and knee replacements and cardiac procedures. There is growing interest in using prehabilitation to prepare for cancer treatments and to minimize some of the potential long-term physical impairments such as heart and balance problems. Therapists are trained to evaluate and treat pain, cancer-related fatigue, strength deficits, range of motion limitations and soft tissue restrictions. By treating these conditions, patients are better able to tolerate the side effects resulting from radiation and chemotherapy. 6 Essential Nutrients for Active Lifestyles DISCOVER WHAT IS NECESSARY TO MAXIMIZE YOUR HEALTH BY SCOTT PORTER, CENTER FOR FUNCTIONAL NUTRITION
E
ating fresh produce and grilling local meats comes with the season. Food is my first choice to get the nutrients I need for an active lifestyle, though I find I generally need a bit more than I acquire from food alone.
The trick has been figuring out what is necessary so I’m not wasting money down the toilet, or behind the tree when camping. With all my research in functional nutrition over the years, I’ve sorted through the hype to get to the most fundamental supplements needed for optimal health. Here are the top six I consider essential: 1. Probiotics – I love the phrase “everything starts in the gut.” Our sleep, energy, clarity and immune system all are affected by the balance of bacteria in our digestive system. I put probiotics and prebiotics at the top because they help maintain a healthy balance of beneficial microorganisms. If there was only one supplement I would take, it would be a probiotic. 2. Vitamin D – Our body makes vitamin D from the sun. But even in the summer I find that most of us do not get enough, although I do cut the amount I take in winter down by half during these sunny months. Immune and cognitive supportive, D is vital. I include vitamin K with D so the calcium I get from my diet goes to my bones and not my arteries and joints. This would slow me down on a steep hike. 3. Magnesium – Fresh vegetables don’t provide us with enough magnesium anymore. Soil is too depleted, and our diets don’t include enough of the right foods. This mineral is responsible for keeping me from getting leg cramps after that long day of waterskiing. How relaxed I feel, how well I sleep and even my blood pressure are each affected by magnesium. 4. Multivitamin – There are a number of micronutrients that we benefit from in small amounts. This includes B vitamins, minerals and vitamins A, C and E. These can easily be taken as a multivitamin. I would avoid those one- or two-a-days. They are not potent enough or in the best forms to be effective. At least three or four capsules per serving is where you get into something worth the money. 5. Omega 3s – If I ate enough fish, the fatty kind, I’d get adequate omega 3s. But I don’t; I’m more a catch-and-release guy. This fatty acid lowers inflammation and maintains healthy heart and mind. I like refrigerated omegas to avoid rancidity. I make sure all the toxins, like mercury, have been removed. 6. Enzymes – Breaking down food begins with chewing, enzymes and the production of bile. Stomach acid comes next as food is pushed through the body. I like to take a digestive enzyme. This helps me avoid acid reflux and aids in overall digestion and absorption. I want strong bones and a sharp mind when I’m riding fast along the bike path and through the trees. Scott Porter, a functional medicine pharmacist, is the director of the Center for Functional Nutrition at Sandpoint Super Drug.

MENOPAUSE “Wise Woman” or “Mind-Misconnect”? BY HOLLY A. CARLING, O.M.D., L.AC., PH.D.
W
hen a woman enters the time of life when her cycle ceases (menopause), it is supposed to be a time unlike any other in her life. It is much different than what we typically experience. It is akin to a rite of passage. It is a time when in earlier history, she is considered the "wise woman." Her accumulated knowledge and experience is treasured and respected. It is a time of settling into contentedness, enjoying family and reaping the rewards of years of hard work. Today, it is more like a dreaded time. Because of the common symptoms of menopause—hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, memory and concentration challenges (referred to as "Mind-Misconnect")—most women don't look forward to this time. They do everything they can to pretend they're not maturing. Aesthetically, that's OK. It's wonderful that we have such an array of anti-aging products and procedures that enable us to hold on to our youthful look much longer than we could in the past. But the symptoms? We just can't do anything about them! They're inevitable. Or are they? The answer: "No. They are not inevitable." They have become so common that we think it's normal but in fact is a symptom of an out-of-balance system. Those who don't experience the common symptoms simply don't talk about it. They're not going to boast that they missed their cycle and they're not having hot flashes! It just tapers off (with a little chaotic cycling first), and it's done. Nothing to remark about. That's the good news! If you are peri-menopausal (going through the process), there is much you can

do to reduce your symptoms. If you haven't started yet, you are even luckier, because by getting your hormones straightened out while you're still cycling, you have a much greater chance of never having menopausal symptoms to start with (not to mention having symptom-free menstrual cycles every month!). Acupuncture, good, solid hormone-supportive nutrition, herbs and other modalities are used together to help balance your hormones. Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is, in my opinion, not the best option. The better option is to support the entire endocrine system—the thyroid, adrenals, pituitary, hypothalamus, liver, ovaries, etc.—that are all part of the feedback loop that determines the health of the sex hormones. Many people erroneously believe that once the ovaries retire, that that is it. No more estrogen. Estrogen is still produced, but other tissues take over, if they're healthy. That's the key—if they are healthy. The problem is, most women have a lifestyle that promotes unhealthy tissues, not healthy ones. They partake of convenience over healthier options. Many just don't know the difference. That's the power of knowledge. With an understanding of what you can do to support a healthy menopause, you can look forward to a wonderful time of your life. FEATURE STORY
All You Need Is Love Three families who heeded the call to adopt BY JANI GONZALEZ PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE DALE FAMILY AND THE BROWNING FAMILY. PHOTOS OF THE WALLACE FAMILY BY ASHLY MONTORO PHOTOGRAPHY.
T
he plight of medically needy orphans around the globe is a crisis few are aware of. In particular, Ukraine upholds antiquated and overburdened systems where developmentally delayed children are institutionalized in state orphanages where they are often neglected and abused. In 2017, UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) reported that 2.7 million children are in residential care (group homes or institutions). Of those, Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia had the highest populations of children in this type of care. They estimate that there are 140 million orphaned children globally, some of whom have living parents. It's a crisis that goes unnoticed and is challenging as international adoption laws have created a maze of agencies and applications for families to overcome. But through concerned individuals and certain nonprofits, some of these children are finding homes. Reece's Rainbow is one of those nonprofits. The national organization began in 2006 as a way to promote awareness of orphaned children with Down syndrome and has expanded to include all children with medical needs. They provide information about the adoption process both domestically and internationally. They also provide grants to families adopting and host a fund for donations. The three families featured here decided to adopt children from Ukraine after feeling a bond with a child seen on a social post. All three also came across Reece's Rainbow in their research.
They first became foster parents and adopted their eldest son, Nathanial, and their youngest son, Aiden. Aiden was born with hydrocephalus from which he is mentally and physically impaired. He was 2 ½ months old when they began fostering him; he weighed 7 pounds. When the option to adopt arose, Laura said there was no question. “It was an instantaneous feeling to say ‘yes,’” she said.
The Dales: Room to Love More Laura Dale of Rathdrum, Idaho, has been fundraising to adopt two medically fragile children from Ukraine. She's been fundraising since February 2017 by selling anything from hand-sewn children's clothing to hand-dipped chocolate caramels. But the Dales' story starts more than a decade before when she and her husband, Jonathan, decided to fost-adopt. Their second child, Kya, was born with chronic health issues. She was nonverbal and required constant care, which eventually became normal for the Dales, who had one other child at the time. In spite of their daughter’s medical issues, they wanted to expand their family but struggled with infertility.
SandpointLivingLocal.com
“Kya’s health issues became normal,” said Laura. “There were acute illnesses where we went on autopilot, but we got so used to it that we thought about caring for a child like her.”
Later that year in 2011, their daughter passed away from her health condition, but Laura looks back at the opportunities Kya gave them. “Her issues were so complicated … [but] she gave us the tools we needed to help other kids.” They focused on caring for Aiden and raising their two other sons, now adults. With only Aiden, now 7 years old, to care for, Laura again thought about helping children like him. “He will not progress beyond infant status and is not hard to take care of unless he gets sick,” she said.

FEATURE STORY After seeing a video of a medically needy child in Eastern Europe, Laura thought she would advocate. “I wanted to show these kids aren’t scary—they just want someone to love them,” she said. Her research led her to Reece’s Rainbow where she began advocating by posting on behalf of “Clarence,” a 4-year-old boy institutionalized in what’s called a “baby house.” Often, children may be moved to an adult institution as young as age 5, in which case their life expectancy drops to about a year. The Dales watched Clarence's video repeatedly and decided to adopt. “People ask, ‘Why aren’t you adopting domestically?’” Laura said. “In Eastern Europe, kids with special needs are pushed into institutions. Even physicians don’t know how to treat these kids with conditions like malnutrition.” In the midst of their fundraising, her husband fell in love with “Aria” from a video Laura saw on social media. “[Aria] was throwing things around her crib like our daughter had; I sent [the video] to him, and he said, 'When do we get her?'” The cost of one adoption is at minimum $28,000. Adopting Aria will cost $13,000, but the Dales are nearing their goal and hope to visit Ukraine to finalize the adoption this summer. Even once finalized, they are required to return two more times before bringing their children home. “You really expose yourself as a person. Many people don't understand the costs,” Laura said. “It's been important for me to work for it—to take the time [fundraising)]. Some people have

CHARRISSA BROWNING ECHOED THE SENTIMENT: “ADOPTION IS NOT FOR EVERYONE, BUT EVERYONE CAN DO SOMETHING.” paid twice what I was asking for, and that helps me get to where I’m going.” The Brownings: Growing a Big Family Charrissa Browning and her husband Phillip, of Port Orchard, Washington, already had a big family when their sixth child, Justus, was born with Down syndrome in 2009. As an infant, he underwent open-heart surgery. Once he had recovered, Charrissa started researching Down syndrome and came across Reece's Rainbow and was immediately drawn to the children listed on the site. “Down syndrome is such a personal thing for us. I read profile after profile and couldn't believe the difference between my child and the photos online,” she said. In June of 2010, the Brownings decided to adopt two children from Ukraine—a boy Maxim and a girl Ivana. Both were around 5 years of age at the time and in the same institution. To raise their adoption fees, Charrissa sold things, fundraised on her blog and hosted a silent auction. They were able to adopt Max just before he turned 6, before he was moved to an adult facility. “It's a place with a mixed population of individuals with mental and health conditions.
Once there, children have an 80-percent chance of dying because of neglect and also abuse from other patients. It's also more difficult to adopt once they're transferred,” Charrissa explained. Their daughter, Ivana, has Down syndrome, and like their son, Justus, had needed heart surgery after birth—except she had never received the proper care. Ivana was born with a hole in her heart and had been relinquished by her parents. It's a miracle she survived the years she did before they adopted her, Charrissa said. “When we met her, her head was shaved, she weighed 20 pounds and wore clothing sized for 18- to 24-month-olds. She was in a laying room where all they did was sleep or lay in a communal crib—like a playpen,” Charrissa said. “When we met the orphanage's director, he saw the difference between our son and the others and even remarked on that.” Ivana was not only suffering from her condition, she was also dehydrated. During their stay, the Brownings were allowed two visits per day and began sneaking her juice and snacks to build her strength. “It was heartbreaking because some of the children realized that ours were coming home,” Charrissa said. “We'll always have a passion; it's

an overwhelming need.” In December 2010, they brought home Max and Ivana, now 13 and 12, and they immediately began to thrive. That first year with three new children with special needs was a difficult one, but they relied on their faith to help them through. “God called us to this. We had to rely on a strength that was bigger than us,” she said. The Wallaces: Fulfilling the Desire to Give a Child a Home Andrea and Matt Wallace always knew they wanted to adopt. Although they already had a large family—eight children with seven at home between the ages of 3 and 17—they had been foster parents in Washington. When they moved to Bonners Ferry, Idaho, however, the state's foster system did not allow them to continue fostering because of their family size. After the rejection, a friend of Andrea's referred her to Reece's Rainbow. Once she got more involved in the online adoption community, she learned about the plight of orphaned children with medical needs. “It's such an eye opener to see the neglect and abuse that goes on,” Andrea said.

One day, in her social news feed, a video posted showed a 15-year-old boy, Dima, with cerebral palsy. The post was from Maya's Hope, another online nonprofit that advocates for orphaned children. Andrea knew he was the one, and the family has been learning about their future adoptive son and brother through the organization for the past year and a half. “I saw the video and felt that was the child we needed to help,” Andrea said. Her family required little convincing. “They're excited to help give a family to someone. They've been a part of the process and have seen the challenges.” International adoption is not without its challenges. Because of delays in the process beyond their control, some of the paperwork they had filed expired, causing a cascade of expirations for other work filed as well. Andrea has raised money by selling her crochet work at the farmers market and online plus raffling a friend's quilt. In addition, they have taken a personal loan to cover the costs and have a family sponsorship on Reece's Rainbow where donors can contribute.
“THERE ARE A LOT OF KIDS WHO ARE ALONE IN THIS WORLD,” ANDREA SAID. “IF YOU'RE RELIGIOUS, PRAY. IF NOT, THINK ABOUT IT. TRY TO DONATE OR SPONSOR—THINK OF WAYS TO HELP.”
The Wallace's are days away from hearing whether they are cleared for travel to finalize the adoption. How to Help Not everyone can change a child's life through adoption, but they can still make a difference by supporting organizations and families who adopt. Donations don't have to be financial. Friends can donate time or offer clothes and supplies as they would with a new baby. Or, sponsor a child on social media by posting their story. “There are a lot of kids who are alone in this world,” Andrea said. “If you're religious, pray. If not, think about it. Try to donate or sponsor— think of ways to help.” Charrissa Browning echoed the sentiment: “Adoption is not for everyone, but everyone can do something.”
The Wallaces know that their future son has some developmental delays and a language barrier but are prepared to welcome and care for him.

“We have some special needs in our family and have been researching special services, too. We're also learning about his culture, religion and learning the language, too,” she said. “We homeschool, so I'll work with him. We know he has some delays which might be institutional, but we won't know more until we get there.”

et’s face it. Even if you love your job and look forward to going to work each day, we all anticipate the arrival of the weekend. Early in the week, we start looking ahead. Is the weather going to be nice? We may plan for a hike or a day at the beach. Chilly and rainy? We can finally pick up that book we started months ago and have yet to finish. But as Friday approaches, reality hits. Lists of chores and errands start to ruin our plans. Honestly, all it takes is a little more planning and you will reclaim your weekend! Here are some tips on how to get started (and right in time for summer fun).
Weekend! HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR WEEKEND
By Patty Hutchens
• Spread your chores throughout the week. It may be the last thing you want to do after a day at work, but try doing a couple each night—or during the day if you work from home—and you will stress a lot less during the weekend. Clean the kitchen sink or stove top while dinner is in the oven. Keep cleaning supplies handy in your bathroom to do a quick clean every so often. Put in a load of laundry in the morning and finish it up in the evening. • Order your groceries or meals online. If you live somewhere that has grocery delivery through an online ordering system, try it out and see how it works for you. Many are free or have free coupons, and those who do charge do so for a minimal fee. Isn’t your time worth at least that? For weekday meals, try one of the many online delivery services. BlueApron and Hello Fresh are just two of the more popular services, but there are many out there. Do your research and try them out! These time-saving and fresh meals will help free up time during the week to get more done around the house.
Be intentional in what you choose to do and be true to you and your family with your time SandpointLivingLocal.com
74
• Don’t go at it alone. You can’t be expected to do it all on your own. Assign your children chores that are appropriate for their age. Set a good example and turn off the TV and have everyone do their chores at the same time. You’ll be amazed at how quickly things are accomplished when working as a team! • Don’t expect perfection. We all want to live in a clean, orderly place, but sometimes that is not the reality. Accept the fact that some rooms may not be exactly how you would like them. After all, there are memories waiting to be made! • Make your weekend plans ahead of time. It’s easy to decline invitations and put off the fun things when we think we just have too much to do on the weekends. Try planning ahead and schedule activities so that you are more likely to follow through. When the weekend is over, you will be glad you did! Of course, there is also the caveat of planning too much. Be intentional in what you choose to do and be true to you and your family with your time.

• Set goals. We often think of goal setting as things we want to accomplish in our professional lives or things we need to accomplish in general. Now that summer is here, how about setting some specific goals of activities you want to engage in or adventures you want to do with your family or friends. Make a “bucket list” of things you would like to do that do not require a lot of travel time. Is there a nearby campground that you would like to spend a night? Possibly there is a bike trail you have yet to explore. • Plan and plan some more. Whether it is meal planning or making a list of things to accomplish during the week, planning ahead and making lists are key. No longer will you spend time wondering, “What am I going to make for dinner?” or have to stop at the store to pick something up on the way home. • Don’t forget Friday. Yes, you may be a bit tired from a long week but remember that Friday nights are what gets your weekend off to the right start. It doesn’t have to be expensive, and you can make it fairly simple. Maybe it’s a family pizza and movie night at home. Or you can take an opportunity to pamper yourself with a nice long bath. • Invest in yourself. Many, especially moms, tend to spend most of their time taking care of others before taking care of themselves. It’s important to realize the more you take care of yourself, the more energy you have to also care for those whom you love.

• Take a break from work. With the advancement of technology, many of us tend to “just do a quick check of our work email” over the weekend. But as many know, one thing can lead to another and before we know it we are working on a proposal, doing research, emailing clients and more. If need be, turn off notifications for the weekend and take away any temptation you have that may draw you into the work mode. If you work from home, keep the computer off and out of sight. Focus on what is important in that moment—you, your family and friends. Weekends should be time to relax and rejuvenate, but the reality is they have turned into a whirlwind for many. Be intentional with how you are spending your time, plan ahead and by all means give yourself permission to relax and enjoy yourself!

WEEKENDER TRIPS TO SATISFY THE SOUL BY COLIN ANDERSON
W
e can’t always get away on a full weeklong vacation, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t find a long weekend in which to explore a new destination. Take an extra day or two off this summer and check out one of our favorite places for a long weekend getaway. Missoula, Montana Millions of people travel to Western Montana each summer, and Missoula is the perfect spot from which to explore. Glacier National Park lies just two and a half hours north, but if you don’t want to make the drive and fight the crowds, a trip down the Bitterroot Valley or up to Flathead or Seeley Lake will leave you speechless. Back in town the Clark Fork, Bitterroot and Blackfoot rivers all offer ample opportunities for a leisurely float in a tube or raft. Avid fly fishermen come from all around in search of monster rainbows, browns and cut throat, and there are several shops that supply guides and local river conditions for those who want to go at it alone. Downtown Tonight happens Thursday evenings and brings together local food trucks and caterers, live music and a beer and wine garden featuring locally made offerings. It’s adjacent to the city’s trail system, and visitors can watch kayakers and surfers ride Brenan’s wave or take a stroll up and down the riverbank. The ‘M’ Trail is a moderately difficult hike, mostly due to elevation, that offers a great view of the entire Missoula valley from the top. After a long day out exploring you can relax at one of the city’s many fine breweries. Big Sky, Bayern and Kettle House are pioneers in the craft beer revolution and are now joined by Highlander, Draught Works and Big Burn in the ever-expanding industry. Big Sky offers a summer outdoor concert series that includes The Barenaked Ladies, Avett Brothers and Luke Bryan, among others. Kettlehouse also opened its own amphitheatre along the Blackfoot River and welcomes The Flaming Lips, Primus and Sheryl Crow. The relaxed vibe of a college town, long summer evenings and bounty of outdoor activities will leave you with memories that will last a lifetime. Coulee Dam, Washington The Columbia River carves through the state, and with the installment of the Grand Coulee Dam,

hundreds of miles of shoreline are available for folks to explore. Start your trip with an up-close look at one of the largest power generators in the entire country. Five hundred and fifty feet high and more than 5,200 feet in length, the dam took most of a decade to construct. According to the National Parks Service, there is enough concrete poured that you could build a road from Seattle to Miami with the material. The visitor center is open just about every day, and 50-minute guided tours are available on the hour starting at 10am May through Labor Day. The building of the dam created Lake Roosevelt, which stretches some 150 miles from Grand Coulee to up near the Canadian border. The best way to see this amazing area is by boat. Tow yours with you or look to rent from marinas found along different points of the lake. Couples or families can also rent high-
end houseboats on trips ranging from three to seven nights. Some boats are up to 80-feet long, contain five bedrooms, Jacuzzis, outdoor barbecue, satellite TV and everything else you would expect at a fine hotel or vacation rental. For those without a vessel, tent and RV camping can be found at nearby Spring Canyon Campground and dozens of other locations as you travel along the water. There are plenty of beaches for kids to splash and play, and Central Washington typically gets more than 300 days of sunshine each year. You’ll find open space, quiet and plenty of places to dip your toes on this relaxing getaway. Walla Walla, Washington No need to fly to Napa Valley to experience some of the best wines in the country. The
exploding popularity of Washington wines has created a wine mecca in Walla Walla like no other. Found seemingly in the middle of farmlands in the far southeast corner of the state, first-time visitors are surprised to see a town of such rich history and sophistication. While wine has always been a primary focus of visitors to the region, there are now 120 wineries located in town and the surrounding valleys. While it might sound overwhelming on where to start, there are several local resources to help plan the perfect tasting day for your group. The Walla Walla Valley Wine Alliance (WallaWallaWine.com) breaks down wineries by region and offers many suggested tour routes. For those wanting to stay on foot, book a room at the historic Marcus Whitman Hotel. Downtown is packed with dozens of tasting

rooms meaning you won’t have to stroll but a block or two before you find your next stop. Many wineries are located on the outskirts of town and have created large beautiful rooms overlooking vineyards and the surrounding hills. Shuttle companies can taxi you between several locations in town cars, limousines or even party buses so you won’t have to worry about driving. Some of the more unique locations include a winery with an adjacent 5-hole golf course you can play while you sip, the old school house and tasting rooms brought to life in converted airplane hangars. You’ll find everything from ultra casual to formal reservations only. By the end of the trip you’ll have found a new appreciation for one of Washington’s biggest industries and most likely a case or two coming back with you to enjoy the rest of the summer.

So you haven’t picked up a bat since your college days or shot hoops since you played with Dad as a kid. Don’t stress! It’s never too late to get back in the game, and summer is just the time to do it. Local organizations and recreation departments offer everything from softball, basketball and volleyball leagues to biking and running groups. It’s a great way to burn a few calories while spending time with friends and meeting new ones. And like when you were young, it’s all about having fun—though a little competition never hurt anyone.

This is where you live, work and play. You may think you’ve been everywhere and know everything about your city, but … have you ever really ventured out not knowing where it might lead to? Now is the time to really get exploring and discover what’s off the beaten path. If you don’t know where to start, play tourist for a day. You can pick up a brochure at the local visitors center that lists the best places to see and activities to do and start your journey there. Go it alone or bring family or friends. It’s sure to be an educational and fun adventure.

Train for
an Event
Summer is the prime time for fun runs, 5ks, marathons, triathlons, swimming events and much more! If you’ve never experienced the joy and satisfaction of competing in—and completing—an endurance race, it is a feeling that can be compared to no other. Whether you’re an experienced athlete or a novice, it’s time to get training. The best way to accomplish what you’ve started is by starting off small with a shorter race. Once you’ve undertaken your first competition, keep training, and by the end of summer, you’ll be ready to conquer a more intense event.
Spelunking
EXPERIENCE IT!
Whether you’re young or just young at heart, exploration is ingrained in our nature. That sense of wonder never leaves us as we grow older, and what better way to feed this sense of wonderment than through spelunking. For those unfamiliar with the term, essentially, spelunking—also referred to as caving—is for the adventurous, as you’ll be exploring caves. It is important to not only be cautious but to go into this adventure prepared. Equipment such as a helmet, bright flashlight, hiking boots and first aid kit are strongly recommended, and it’s best to bring a friend along.

TRAVEL & LEISURE
Sampling Spokane CITY SHAPING UP AS CULINARY DESTINATION BY COLIN ANDERSON PHOTOS BY LAUREN DENOS
W
hen I left the suburbs of Minnesota at the age of 18 for the mountains of Western Montana, I knew I had my life figured out. Who didn’t their first three months of officially becoming an adult? I was going to get a degree in journalism, do sports talk radio and live out my days casting flies in the Bitterroot Valley in summer and riding snow-capped peaks all winter long. Then along came a girl from small-town Idaho. Things started looking serious and after four years of dating, she informed me she was going to pursue a graduate degree at Gonzaga University in Spokane. I’d only been to the Lilac City for a couple of concerts and to use the airport, and the idea of leaving Montana wasn’t my favorite at the time. She enrolled and I stayed put for a year, pouting mostly about leaving what I’d come to call my new home. When it eventually became clear that to make the relationship work I would need to move, I reluctantly packed up my few belongings, rented a U-Haul and committed to living in a state I had never spent more than a day in. Eleven years later I find myself loving my life as a Spokanite and have a hard time seeing myself living anywhere else. Over the past two decades the city has transformed and flourished, and the energy around town is nearing an all-time high. Since Gonzaga’s improbable run to the Elite 8 in 1999, the University has more than doubled its enrollment, and the recent addition of a University of Washington Medical School has given the city a youthful feel. In a downtown where entire blocks were abandoned not long ago, hotels, apartments, boutiques and eateries now dominate the old brick buildings. With investment in downtown, new small business owners and professional opportunities comes demand for more dining and entertainment options, and this is where Spokane is really starting to become its own destination. When I found myself here in the mid-2000s, there were just three breweries in town; only one distributed while the other two were nano

operations inside of restaurants that only served on site. Today there are more than two dozen, a thriving wine tasting scene, locally roasted coffee and an ever-evolving restaurant scene that is attracting James Beard nominees and Top Chef contestants to plant their roots in this evergrowing community. If you want a true taste of what the Spokane region has to offer in the way of incredible foods, look no further than the second annual CRAVE! Food and Drink Celebration, held July 12 through 15. While Spokane has no shortage of dining and tasting festivals, CRAVE! truly stands alone in the quality of the presentations, opportunities to learn from some of the top chefs in the region and from across the country, and the variety of tasting opportunities during the event. CRAVE! is the brainchild of one of the Spokane area’s most iconic chefs and restaurant owners—Adam Hegsted. A Pacific Northwest native, Hegsted graduated from Northwest Culinary Academy and Art Institute of Seattle. He is a James Beard regional semi-finalist and was invited to cook at the annual Beard Foundation Dinner, an honor that chefs from around the country strive for. He is owner of the Eat Good Group which has restaurants in Spokane that include the wildly popular

Wandering Table and Gilded Unicorn and has also recently branched into North Idaho with the openings of Farmhouse Kitchen and Silo Bar in Sandpoint and Republic Kitchen and Tap House in Post Falls. The group’s newest endeavor, Incrediburger & Eggs, offers very reasonably priced quick-serve burgers and breakfast sandwiches with unique twists on the classics. Having built connections with the restaurant community regionally and from his travels nationally, Hegsted knew it was time for Spokane to put its name out there and celebrate the great cooks and regional ingredients the area has to offer. On any day throughout CRAVE! you’ll find the most talented local chefs as well as others from across the border in Idaho and Montana. Hegsted has even invited guest chefs from as far away as San Francisco, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Vancouver. As CRAVE! is a four-day event, you can expect variety and something different with each session. You can purchase tickets to a single event, multiple events or all-access VIP which gets you into every tasting and special post-event celebrations. CRAVE! kicks off Thursday, July 12 with a Seafood Bash. Dozens of stations will be set up both indoors and out at the CenterPlace Regional Events Center in Spokane Valley. Guests

Once inside, your ticket gets you unlimited sampling during the event of both food and drink, so there’s nothing additional to purchase during your session. Chefs prepare a dazzling array of tastes using fresh seafood as well as local trout and even sturgeon. Friday evening’s theme is Foods Around the World as chefs utilize regionally sourced ingredients in popular dishes from Europe, Asia and other far-off destinations. Grand Tasting events Friday and Saturday allow chefs the freedom to present their favorite bites, and locally made wine, beer and spirits are also available to pair with your delicious dishes. There are demonstrations you can attend, and live music will keep the energy up all weekend long. While the majority of the events are for those 21 and older, Sunday morning is a family friendly brunch theme, so if you are still hungry, bring the kids for a delicious finish to a great weekend of culinary celebration. Tickets to all events are on sale now with early bird rates currently available. Packages include individual sessions, multiple sessions or all-

inclusive all weekend access. You can purchase tickets, find out more about lodging partners and see a list of participating restaurants at CraveNW.com. CRAVE! is a prime example of a town on the rise. Spokane is drawing its growing population from all walks of life. Young adults are checking out the multiple schools, young families are finding professional opportunities with affordable housing and empty nesters are leaving larger metropolitan areas for a more relaxed pace that still offers much of the entertainment, food and drink they are accustomed to. With rivers, lakes, parks and trails in and around town and mountains not far off in the distance, outdoor recreationalists are finding ample opportunity to explore while driving less than 90 minutes from their home. Being part of a citywide revitalization is exciting and something that should be celebrated. If you haven’t seen Spokane in some time, make CRAVE! your reason to see all that’s happening. You’ll be treated to incredible food and drink, beautiful summer weather and an opportunity to explore all the area has to offer. You’ll see why so many are making Spokane their new home.

LIONS CLUB OF SANDPOINT HOSTS MEMORABLE FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION
I
t is known as one of the most festive times in Sandpoint—the Fourth of July. For the past several decades, the Lions Club of Sandpoint has put on a day of activities that have locals and tourists flocking to Downtown Sandpoint to enjoy celebrations of this special day. “The Lions have been doing this since at least the late 1960s or the early 1970s,” said Lions member, June Dull. The festivities will kick off with a children’s parade at 9am, followed by the Grand Parade at 10am. Participants for the Grand Parade will gather at the corner of 5th Avenue and Church Street and will circle the downtown area before returning back to the starting point. “Typically, we have between 80 to 90 entries for the parade,” said June.
STORY AND PHOTO BY PATTY HUTCHENS
To raise money for the events, which include a fabulous fireworks display at City Beach at dusk, the Lions Club sells raffle tickets for various prizes. First prize this year is a large four-wheeler and a smaller one for kids. Second prize is $2,000 worth of “Bonner Bucks” which can be spent at any retailer in Bonner County. Third prize is $1,000 in cash.

Tickets are sold by all Lion members either in person or from one of their sites around town. “We are out every day between now and the Fourth of July including at the beach on the day. People can find us at Yokes, Co-op, Walmart and North 40,” said June. “And we may be at other locations which we haven't okayed yet. Pierce Auto has been very good about letting us have a day at their dealership also. Usually it's toward the end of June, and we serve free hamburgers. We have our awning set up and the four-wheelers on a trailer so people can see what the first prize is. Tell everyone to look for us out and about!” After the parade, you can hang out at City Beach, go for a hike, go out on the water for a ride or enjoy a meal at one of the fabulous restaurants in and around Sandpoint. But whatever you do, be sure to return to City Beach by dusk to enjoy an incredible fireworks display. A special “thank you” to the Lions Club of Sandpoint as well as the following businesses who have donated to assist with the expenses of putting on the Fourth of July festivities: Northern Lights, P1FCU, Sandpoint Super Drug, Waterfront Property Management and Johnson Heating and Cooling.
