A few Satisfied Clients’ Comments... “Eric and Julina were on top of every question we asked. They sought out homes that met our needs and were in our price range, which was not an easy task. The information they gave us about the homes we saw was complete and accurate. They were at our disposal whenever we needed them and furnished information to us as soon as they received it. They were great negotiators getting us the best deal possible.
“Eric Skinner did an excellent job. He was professional, trustworthy in his dealings with us paying close attention to details and keeping us informed. He made excellent use of digital tools to streamline the buying process. His understanding of our needs was also excellent as he quickly gave us a good selection of homes to view. Ian Potter, Raleigh, NC
Bud and Mary-Jane Henry
“Eric, was very professional and made us very comfortable about our purchase. We were from out of state while purchasing our house and Eric brought things to our attention that we were unaware of that helped us make informed decisions while doing inspections for the house. We looked to Eric for many recommendations for multiple inspectors while purchasing our house and all of the people we hired were just as professional. Dennis Heavey
“We always knew that we made the right broker selection in choosing Eric Skinner. Never a doubt. Eric was very good at determining if a prospect was qualified which, at our price point, was reassuring. Appreciated the talent with video, drones and advertising page layout. Our ads always looked inviting, warm and professional. We highly recommend Eric and his team! Elaine Lieb

et’s talk countertops. One of my favorite upgrades in any kitchen or bathroom often starts with countertops. Nowadays there are so many options out there you can choose almost any look, but all countertop surfaces are not created the same! Stone countertops are very popular and often go with the rustic interiors we favor here in North Idaho. Stone ranges in all kinds of looks and colors, from super-simple Absolute Black, to classic Carrara Marble, to swirly-twirly Typhoon Bordeaux. As well, the surface of stone can be polished, honed or even leathered, creating options within options, which can be even more daunting when it comes to the selection process. However, I will say this: Often when it comes to natural stone, and granite in particular, my clients experience something akin to love at first sight—they’ll see a slab and just know that that is the rock they want in their house.
SandpointLivingLocal.com
Stone is quarried all over the world, but there are several talented fabricators and sales centers right here in the Sandpoint area. Natural stone is dug out of the quarry, then split into manageable slabs, then sent to local distributors (ours are mainly in Spokane) and then purchased by the fabricator, who cuts it to size, adds details like edging and specific cuts, and then it is installed. It is a tedious process that is all the more difficult because the fabricators are working with massive slabs that weigh thousands of pounds and can break easier than you might think! Quartz is fabricated roughly the same way as granite, but it is a man-made substance, not pure stone like granite. It’s called quartz because the manufacturers take quartz rough material, grind it down finely, and mix it with binders and pigments to get an end product. It can look wild with lots of variation, or subtle with little to no variation, and can go with a variety of interiors. Many people labor under the misinformation that quartz is more durable than

there are so many options out there you can choose almost any look granite, but often times, that is not the case as it can be more brittle and heat-sensitive. Because it is man-made, the material is only as good as its manufacturing process, and different manufacturers have different processes. A good fabricator or sales center can help you determine the right quartz brand for you, as they often have their favorites that they have good working history with.
Corian edges look fantastic, and some places can do seamless rolled edges as well.
There is also tried-and-true laminate, which has come a long way since the glossy blue marbled look of 1985! The new laminate materials from Wilsonart and Formica are gorgeous—some of them look very close to natural stone, and others looking sleek and ready for an uber-modern interior. Edging has also improved. Gone are the days when wood or laminate tape was the only option for countertop edging. Integrated
I’ve done Terrazzo countertops, concrete countertops and even natural Linoleum countertops. All of them are different and all of them have pros and cons. Bearing that in mind, do some research and then ask questions of your salesperson! They can be a wealth of information and can help you find the right product for your home.
In addition, there are new composites like Dekton, which works for both indoor and outdoor use and is very dense, and fun, environmentally friendly options like compressed paper, which comes in a variety of colors and looks like stone or even leather.

A SUPERINTENDENT WITH HEART By Patty Hutchens | Photo by SHS Cedar Post, Freddy Libby
Shawn Woodward Shawn Woodward did much to improve Lake Pend Oreille School District
I
t’s been seven years since we introduced you to Shawn Woodward, and a lot has happened during his tenure as superintendent of Lake Pend Oreille School District—things for which teachers, students and parents are grateful. It is with sadness that many will say goodbye to Woodward, who will leave his position in Sandpoint as of July 1, taking over as the superintendent of Mead School District in Spokane. The impact he has made in Sandpoint over the years has been significant. Kevin Hutchens, a business teacher at Sandpoint High School and a 2012 graduate of SHS, appreciated the support he received from Woodward as Hutchens returned to his alma mater to join the staff after teaching for one year in Minnesota. “I really loved his enthusiasm and approachability. He was very open-minded and optimistic about where we are heading as a district,” said Hutchens. “He really valued your opinion and was a great leader in our school district.” There have been challenges, one of which Woodward identifies as having to face a tax measure for funding every two years. In an interview with SHS’s student-led newspaper, Woodward said another challenge has been to get the community to understand the dire need for new facilities. One of Woodward’s many accomplishments include establishing the Homeschool Academy, which now has an enrollment of 125 students, with Lake Pend Oreille School
District being the only district in Idaho with such a program. The biggest legacy he leaves behind, however, was the passing of a $25 million levy allowing the district to be competitive with other districts when it comes to salaries. Geraldine Lewis, a member of the Lake Pend Oreille School District Board of Trustees, said she too is sorry to see Woodward leave. “He really has been an amazing superintendent for our district. A professional, motivated leader with great vision,” said Lewis. “It has been my honor to work with him these past four years as a trustee.” Looking ahead, it will be difficult to replace someone who has made such great strides for our district, but the hope is whoever that person is will carry on the work that Woodward has done and achieve some of the goals that have been challenging for the district as well. “I think we need to look for someone who has a long-term plan for our district that is realistic,” said Hutchens of the new superintendent. “I would like to see someone who is willing to fight for updating our outdated facilities, as Shawn did, and looks at providing a quality environment for student learning.” Thank you, Shawn. Your work has been appreciated and you will certainly be missed!

TIPS FOR THE
TRAIL
What you should know before beginning your adventure By Deb Duwe, MA- KPA-CTP
M
ore pets and their families are heading to the trails like never before, especially after the long North Idaho winter. How can they help keep the trails enjoyable for everyone? Here are a few tips:
1. Be Prepared - Things to carry on the trail: cell phone, “poop” bags, leash and, last but not least, doggie treats to reward your amazing pooch for calm manners on the trail! 2. To Leash or Not to Leash - Know your leash laws: Sandpoint City, public rights of way, dogs must be on a leash; Travers, Farmin Park and City Beach do not allow dogs; Lake View and Hickory Park, limited leash is permitted; Ponderay Bay Trail, off leash permitted (off-leash dogs must be easily controlled). My dogs eagerly check in by my side (on or off leash) when I reward them with yummy treats. A 6-foot leash keeps them close when there's lots of trail traffic. I use a 15-foot-long line when the trail or walkway is not as crowded. 3. Greeting People and Dogs - How much socialization and interaction should happen between dogs, their people, and non-pet people? That depends on the walker, the canine personalities involved, and if they clash. Some examples include happy over-excited pooch, nervous Nellie,
SandpointLivingLocal.com
I don't want to be bothered with you and sometimes Cujo lookalike. You'll need to determine what type your pet can mesh with. Early communication with others on the trail can be super helpful. Some dogs may be in training and their pet parents may not want your dog approaching them. 4. Trail Goals - Make your goals realistic. As a trainer and owner, my primary purpose on the trail is to allow exploration of other environments, exercise and to practice calm behaviors in various social situations. Trail walks can also be a perfect time to reinforce the attention on me and not the other dogs. I teach a "look" cue—when my canine's eyes meet mine he is rewarded with a yummy treat. This can be an excellent distraction while we calmly walk past another dog. The greatest skill for your dog during a walk is paying attention to you with the reward being polite behavior and a closer relationship. 5. Trail Etiquette • Leashed or unleashed, have your dog under voice control. Teach them sit, stay, down, leave it, come, off—it could save their lives. • Yield to other walkers, bikers or families with children. • Respect the space of others, be it dogs or people. Ask for permission if your dog can greet another dog or person.
28
Enhance your training skills and develop reliable, safe trail behaviors for the thrill of enjoying nature with your best friend.
• Advocate for your canine. It is appropriate to politely ask another owner to recall their dog or place them on a leash as you pass. That way it becomes a pleasurable experience for all parties.
We love our pets!

T
he planning is underway, and the Sandpoint Summer Sampler promises to be bigger and better than ever! Mark your calendars for June 27 and head down to Farmin Park from 5 to 8pm as the community comes together to sample some of Sandpoint’s finest cuisine.
The Summer Sampler is the first of three fundraising events the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce will hold this summer. The other two—Beerfest and The Scenic Half Marathon—also help fund the nonprofit.
THIS GREAT EVENT HAS GROWN
“We are anticipating between 15 and 20 vendors,” said Kristin Carlson, communications specialist for the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce who is hosting the event. “With the two new breweries (Utara and Matchwood) and a few new restaurants, we’re hoping for closer to 20.”
THROUGHOUT THE YEARS, AND IT’S NO WONDER GIVEN THE FOOD, ATMOSPHERE, ENTERTAINMENT AND A CHANCE
“We split the proceeds (for the Summer Sampler) with each vendor 50/50,” said Carlson. “We want to showcase our amazing local restaurants, caterers, breweries and wineries. The main goal of the event is to bring locals together. Summer Sampler is considered the locals’ kickoff to a great summer season!”
This year’s event will feature entertainment by Devon Wade, whose performance is being sponsored by Litehouse Foods, and the Chamber will also be giving away two tickets to each Festival at Sandpoint concert this season!
TO CONNECT WITH FRIENDS.
The popularity of this great event has grown throughout the years, and it’s no wonder given the food, atmosphere, entertainment and a chance to connect with friends. Now in its 14th year, Carlson said last year there were just under 1,200 attendees, an impressive number especially considering the weather was not ideal.

andpoint-native Mindy Murray opened the doors to Kauai Therapy & Wellness on Kauai, Hawaii, in 2012. Providing her clients revolutionary physical, occupational, massage, yoga therapy and martial arts therapy, she decided the time had come to return home to Sandpoint, where she opened her second location in April of 2018. “I had a strong desire to return to my roots and give to my community what I know I can—which is great healing therapy services,” she says. “We are so happy to have a clinic home here in Idaho as well as the island of Kauai! What two beautiful places!” Born in Sandpoint, Mindy and her family left for the Hawaiian Islands when she was 12. More than 30 years later, she would finally return “home” with her own family. “I brought my hubby (who traded his surfboard for a snowboard), three kids and two dogs back home here,” says Mindy. “We have a home in Sandpoint built on property that has been in my family since the ‘70s. My father owned Ricardo’s Pizza for years, and my mother was an occupational therapist for Panhandle Home Health.”

At Kauai Therapy & Wellness, Mindy is joined by Garrett Fischer, DPT (Dr. of PT); Jessie Hunt, LMT; Kelcee Tomco, LMT; Heidi Disbro, PTA; and Brooke Rieger, Clinic Coordinator. They offer three services all at one location: physical therapy, occupational therapy and massage therapy. Financial hardship programs are available for those who qualify, and Kauai offers same-day appointments. In most cases, there is no doctor referral required. They have programs for those who do not want to use their insurance due to high deductibles, out-ofstate benefits or those who do not have insurance. If you’re looking for a dry needling, medical massage or laser pain session, they invite you to give them a call. “We know how to get you better—faster!" affirms Mindy. Kauai Therapy and Wellness is also licensed to offer dry needling, a manual therapy that uses very thin needles inserted in your muscle tissue. It is used to stimulate neural, muscular and connective tissues for the management of musculoskeletal conditions, pain and movementrelated impairments. When asked what she finds most rewarding about the work she does, she

replied: “That is easy! Connecting with people and seeing them get better and return to their prior level of function with a smile!” Mindy and her team find it important to give back to the community they call home; the community that has shown them support since first opening their doors to Sandpoint just a little more than one year ago. After the devastating fire in Downtown Sandpoint that left multiple businesses destroyed, Mindy and her staff held free therapy sessions for firefighters involved in putting out the flames, also donating to help the employees left without work due to the fire. They’ve contributed to the Regeneration Calvary Chapel Youth Mission Trip to Mexico and the Women’s March; have volunteered their chair and sports massage services at various events; and several on the staff volunteer annually for the Festival at Sandpoint. Their massage therapist serves on the PTA at Washington Elementary; and Mindy teaches Sunday School. At the end of each day, she is fulfilled by the work she and her team are able to accomplish and attributes the success of her business to God. “His hand is in all of this.”

“Father” is a Verb VOLUNTEERS MAKING A DIFFERENCE AT LAKE PEND OREILLE HIGH SCHOOL
O
By Teresa Pesce
KIDS DON’T NEED THE GREATEST DAD IN THE WORLD; THEY JUST NEED A DAD WHO IS IN THEIR WORLD.
ne Father’s Day weekend, all the kids in Sunday school were asked to share their favorite memory of being with their dad. All five sons of the pastor—in separate classes so none knew what his brothers had said—shared the same thing: going to the doughnut shop with their dad before church. There had been many fun family vacations that were carefully planned, often elaborate, and sometimes expensive, but it was the doughnut shop with Dad they all loved and remembered best. Spending time with Dad is precious to kids. Sometimes we joke about how dads parent their children—it’s frequently different than how moms do it—but what they do serves definite purposes in a child’s life. Some of the ways men “father” their children tend to be universal and ageless; for instance, the way dads have of balancing a child over their head on the palm of their hand and gently rotating them back and forth; the way they twirl, swing, dangle and toss a child up into the air and catch them. An older man treasures a very dear childhood memory of his dad and uncles tossing him back and forth across the living room while his mom protested that he was going to hit the chandelier. (He didn’t.) It turns out that these mom-

worrying forms of play are important in developing a child’s sense of balance! There is also a touch of benign neglect that dads bring to the parenting equation. It’s a gently humorous truth that you can usually tell when Dad has dressed the kids. Their hair is rumpled, their clothes don’t match, and he is oblivious. Dads can also be indulgently indifferent about food. When Mom is away, pizza rules the day! In general, dads don’t worry as much about things as moms do, and they are more likely to encourage their children to take risks and meet challenges—which is an important part of a child’s character growth. Men are the less verbal of the parenting pair, but that is often a plus—not a problem. Kids receive characterbuilding communication from their dads without words getting in the way. One son remembers suffering a withering loss to a rival team, and his dad said, “We’ll work on it.” Then he tossed him a basketball and they shot a few hoops together. His son processed his dad’s reaction as being allowed to absorb the loss without a mushy discussion or a chirpy pep talk. Dads say a great deal without saying much at all. It’s one of their gifts.

If you would like to tap into your own “Dad power” and make a difference in the life of a child, one simple and deeply rewarding way is to volunteer at Lake Pend Oreille High School, an alternative school in Sandpoint.
A dad’s respect for his daughter and his admiration of her strengths and gifts builds a natural wall of belief and confidence against anyone who would think of or treat her otherwise. Kids don’t need the greatest dad in the world; they just need a dad who is in their world. And if they don’t have a dad in their world? “Fathering” is something any man can do. Simply spending time with a young person activates all the dynamics of fathering. A dad doesn’t have to be a sage or a psychologist. He doesn’t have to be a skilled mentor or motivator. All he really has to be—is there. Men do great “Dad things” without even being aware of it. If you would like to tap into your own “Dad power” and make a difference in the life of a child, one simple and deeply rewarding way is to volunteer at Lake Pend Oreille High School, an alternative school in Sandpoint. There, children whose lives have been more challenging than most have the opportunity to complete their academic education and experience a supportive, caring environment. The teachers and volunteers become pseudo family members to the students. One graduate asked a teacher-friend to walk her down the aisle when she married. Another considered a teacher-friend a grandfather figure in their life. “That is the beauty of this school,” says teacher Randy Wilhelm. “We’re one big family.” Randy first came to the campus as a guest speaker, changed careers, and is now in his 21st year there.
SandpointLivingLocal.com
The modest downtown campus often becomes home to the students and many stop by and check in from time to time after they graduate. As one graduate put it, “I miss this place so much!” They share their successes and sometimes ask for advice. They list the teachers as job references. They get help in building community connections and guidance in going in the right direction. “It’s nice to keep in touch and see them land on their feet and move forward,” Randy says, “to see them go on to college, get married, have families.” Because some of the students have been hurt and let down, they may initially think a volunteer is just going to leave them like everyone else in their life has done. But when connection begins, there is nothing else like it. “You never know when you’re making that big impact,” Randy says. “Once volunteers get involved, they tend to stay just because they enjoy the students. You may not know the backstory of the battle a student is fighting, but you can help them win it.” For more information, call Lake Pend Oreille Alternative High School at 208.263.6121. (Although this article is about dads in commemoration of Father’s Day, women volunteers are needed just as much!)

SANDPOINT IN FOCUS

pring is here, and summer is not far behind. The time to list and/or buy a home is upon us. There are so many questions at this point. How do I choose a Realtor®? Is my credit score high enough to qualify for a loan, and if not, what do I do to fix it? What type of property is right for me (and my family)? What can I afford, still live comfortably and not be house poor? There are so many questions one must ask themselves when following their dream of homeownership. A Realtor® can help, but there are a few things to consider first. None of us enjoy paying someone else’s bills, especially when they are benefitting from our hard work. Is renting really what you want to do? So, decide if homeownership is your next step!
The first thing I would recommend is to keep your credit in order. You can request a free credit report from each credit reporting agency (Equifax, Experian and Trans Union) every 12 months. Review the reports and dispute any errors you may find. I won’t lie and say this is an easy task. It can take time but will be worth it. Pay your bills on time and, if possible, on revolving debt, pay a little extra each month. This will help bring your scores up while taking those balances down even faster, which equates to lower interest payments. If you have little to no credit, did you know that you can add utilities to your profile to improve your scores? Another option is to take the Finally Home class, which is a one-day class for first-time homebuyers that will help you understand the

process of becoming a homeowner and can offer credit counseling ideas, as well as suggestions if you have income challenges. These classes are taught at Bonner Community Housing Agency (BonnerHousing.org) and cover everything from financing challenges to the closing of the transaction. Chris Bassett and his team of instructors can be a stepping stone on your journey to homeownership. Once you have determined if the time is right to start “shopping,” the next and most important component is finding a Realtor®. Why use a Realtor®? The reasons are too many to list, but here are a few important reasons: Local Realtors® are knowledgeable and vested in their

community; Realtors® are educated in real estate matters; Realtors® act as your “guide” in any real estate transaction; and Realtors® are bound to a Code of Ethics. Realtors® care about their communities. Whether it is volunteering at a fundraiser, belonging to the hospital board of directors, coaching little league or attending city council meetings, chances are there are more than a few Realtors® in the crowd. I would suggest interviewing three to five Realtors®. How do you determine which three to five to interview? You may already know a Realtor® or two, or maybe a trusted family member or friend can make a recommendation. Maybe you saw their picture online. Do your
research. This person will be working on your behalf, so he or she, or sometimes they, should be a perfect fit for your needs. Becoming a homeowner is truly the biggest investment of your lifetime, and you should be represented in the best way possible to protect your interests and investment. In a technology-driven world, we are missing an important element that a computer or a big data company cannot provide or replace—personal knowledge and experience. Realtors® do so much more than technology can. Realtors® are hands on, here to show you the homes you are interested in, and guess what? You can’t smell cat pee through a computer screen! Zillow and

Trulia won’t tell you about or show you defects in a septic system/drain field or know that there are train tracks in the backyard, among many other things you really should know and care about. A Realtor® has access to the local multiple listing service information and can give you a more accurate local market analysis than Zillow’s “Zestimate,” as well as sharing their listing information with other local Realtors®. Realtors® keep the human “touch” in the transaction because, honestly folks, real estate is not an online event! Having said all of this, we come to the state of residency and the current market. With a local unemployment rate of 4.1 percent and 1,727
employers in Bonner County with projected job growth of +1,392 (9.8 percent increase) within the next five years, affordable housing has been and remains a serious issue and topic of discussion. Large employers such as Schweitzer, Litehouse, Quest and others struggle to retain employees due to housing opportunities or lack thereof (what is affordable to one may not be for another). The median wage in Bonner County is $15.99, the median household income is $47,135, and with current home prices, it is easy to see why it is hard for many to afford a mortgage of $225,000 or more. In just the past year, we have seen areas such as Seven Sisters subdivision in Kootenai go from having 20 lots available for building to completely selling out. Construction at Dover Bay is constant and ever-expanding. The small development off Poplar Street has homes selling before they are built. More and more developments are needed to meet the current housing needs. In 2008, at the downturn of the market, the median single-family home price was $258,00 with 275 units sold. In 2012, the market hit a low with the median single-family home price of $187,000 and 393 units sold. Currently, 2019 has seen the median single-family home price of $315,000 (which is the same as year-end 2018) with only 145 units sold as of May 20, 2019.
SandpointLivingLocal.com
Lack of inventory has led to multiple offer situations on those properties being listed, many turning into bidding wars. Cash sales have increased 27 percent over the last three years, and one-third of the sales to date in 2019 have been cash transactions. Many factors play into the increase of cash transactions. Some say it is the higher population of retirees, others say it is those who have received their insurance checks from the fires in California who are moving to Idaho, and some could argue that those folks from the city who were tired of the hustle and bustle sold their home for a large profit and can find a nicer home here for less. It is hard to say for certain, but it does play a role in our housing market. Local Realtors® are working toward finding a solution for the local housing issues. Don’t hesitate to reach out and ask questions. Realtors® are the professionals who can answer your questions and get you started in the right direction! than Butler says his parents always used to joke that he was born with a baseball in his hand. It is a sport that Ethan has been passionate about for as long as he can recall. As a freshman on the varsity team, it is evident that his years of hard work have paid off, but it has not been without challenges. “There were times when I would really struggle while pitching. I'd throw a lot of consecutive walks or hit a batter with a pitch. I'd really put a lot of pressure on myself and beat myself up,” said Ethan. “Now, I really focus on my thought process and think positive. When I do make a mistake, I try to visualize it and fix it on my next pitch.” Ethan, who also played basketball on the junior varsity team this year, said what he enjoys most about sports is the team aspect. “You get to hang out with guys with like interests and work toward a common goal,”
IN HIS WORDS...
he said. “Plus, joking around is always fun!” With college a few years off, Ethan is currently focusing on bringing home to Sandpoint a state championship. “I have played baseball with a great group of guys for years, and I believe we can make this happen for our town.” And there is no doubt with his passion and talent that he will achieve his goal. Ethan has already learned much from sports, and one lesson in particular will carry not only him, but his teammates, far. “A life lesson I've learned is that no matter who is out on the field or court, you can believe in them and they will get the job done … but the most important is believing in yourself to come through for them and yourself.”

this year, which is a huge jump over the past seasons.” Looking ahead, Tanis will attend North Idaho College where she will study phlebotomy. “I love helping people, and that’s why I want to be a nurse,” she said of her ultimate goal. Tanis shares that the one important lesson she has learned through softball is to always use what she refers to as “process steps.” It is a lesson that has obviously served her well!
Her coach, Elizabeth Hawkins-Williams, praises Tanis’s effort and ability. “She has always been one of the hardest working players in our program. She leads by example and is a team player; that’s why we made her a captain this season,” said Elizabeth. “She has a great attitude and has really worked to improve her mental game. All of those things lead her to the success she has had on the field.” Tanis led the team in almost every offensive category and has tied the single season homerun record this year with four home runs. “She broke the single season slugging percentage this season with an SLG (slugging) percentage of 0.800 and had 24 strikeouts

UP AND AWAY SANDPOINT AVIATION PROGRAM HELPS MAKE DREAMS REALITY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS BY DAN THOMPSON PHOTOS BY KENDALL LANG PHOTOGRAPHY
O
n a rainy spring Saturday morning, Kristi Lowry was ungreasing a portion of the fuselage on an old World War II airplane at the Sandpoint Airport. Eventually, she or another student would strip off the mint green paint and replace it with a more original Army green. Lowry, a Clark Fork High School student, is often at the airport on Saturday mornings, part of a high school aviation program held there. “I like being able to learn a lot of new things with building,” Lowry said. “Usually girls aren’t involved with these things.” On this morning, about half of the dozen or so students there are girls, which is standard for the group, said Ken Larson, who is in charge of the program. Lowry will log her time working on the two airplanes in the hangar, an effort she can eventually convert into flying time. She wants to be a pilot. “The first time I flew a plane, I knew this was the best thing in the world,” she said.
SandpointLivingLocal.com
All the students there seemed to agree with her. Larson, who flew in the Air Force and then flew business jets, co-founded the North Idaho High School Aerospace Program with Barney Ballard six years ago. “We have a ground school class that’s an actual academic class at Sandpoint (High School), and it has kind of evolved into a career pathways class,” Larson said. This year, he said, there are 16 students in the class. Some are homeschooled while others attend high schools in the area. And most of them are at the airport just about every Saturday to work on restoring these two planes. Patches, the more complete of the two, the group hopes to use in its own training flights. Accordingly, they plan to put in a bigger engine, one with an electric starter for the propeller. The other plane, whose fuselage Lowry was working on, was in many more pieces. Both were originally gliders used in World War II. Tom Dean lives in Sandpoint and was one of three volunteer mentors PHOTO BY LISA TURNER there with the students. SO FAR, A HANDFUL OF FORMER MEMBERS ARE NOW ENROLLED IN AVIATION PROGRAMS AT COLLEGES TO BECOME COMMERCIAL PILOTS. OTHERS ARE TRAINING TO BE—OR ALREADY ARE—AIRCRAFT MECHANICS. STILL MORE ARE IN ENGINEERING SCHOOL.
G.I. Bill. Dean is an engineer and designed large commercial airplanes before he retired, “but,” he said, “this is where my love lies.” “It’s just part of my DNA. I was born this way,” Dean said of working with planes. “This is a great way (for students) to get started. Hopefully this gives them a connection with history.” In a different hangar, Larson keeps the two training planes: a Zodiac named Zoey and a Cessna 150 named Lupe. It gives students two different wing configurations (high and low wings) to practice in. Students also spend time flying, and through the program they can earn their pilot’s license. About a dozen have, Larson said, in the program’s brief history. The process still costs money, but someone who is taking lessons outside the program would pay more to earn a license, he said. The program has received grants and scholarships to help offset the cost. So far, a handful of former members are now enrolled in aviation programs at colleges to become commercial pilots. Others are training

to be—or already are—aircraft mechanics. Still more are in engineering school. Entering a post-secondary program with a license in hand is an advantage for those who want to work around planes, Larson said, but there are other benefits as well. “It’s a difficult thing to achieve, the license. It takes a lot of academic work, a lot of flying and precision, and really a commitment,” Larson said. “So employers see that, and especially the Air Force people, they see that somebody can achieve something difficult and stick with it, so it’s more than just the license; it’s the ability to do it.” Maggie Kirscher was Larson’s first student, before the program existed in its current form. A counselor at Sandpoint High School told her about the opportunity and sent her for a job shadow. After the flight, Kirscher was all in. “I had an intro flight with Ken and went up for an hour, and I just got hooked,” she said. “It’s a really incredible thing.”

Kirscher earned her pilot’s license after her senior year at Sandpoint, in 2012, and then went to North Idaho College to complete a number of her general requirements. After that she enrolled at Cochise College in Arizona, and there she got her instrument, commercial and instructor’s licenses. She was hired as a first officer for Republic Airlines last June and said she loves it. Gavin Klein does, too. After two years in the aviation maintenance technology program at North Idaho College, Klein is a student at the University of Alaska in Anchorage, about a year and a half from earning a bachelor’s degree in professional piloting.
Taylorcraft BC12-D, which they sold locally in order to buy the two planes that they are currently working on. They have a Rotorway Executive helicopter—in pieces—they would like to sell, Larson said. They were just donated another plane from Las Vegas, and Dean drove down and brought it back. That will be a project for a little later on, according to Larson. “We’ve run out of space,” Larson said, “and the cost of operating is going up, so we’re having to stop growing, which is a little bit of an issue because we’re getting a lot more interest.”
A Sandpoint graduate, Klein appreciated that the high school program emphasized other aspects of aviation, not just piloting.
The students would fly every day if they had the time, Larson said, but they are busy with school, homework, sports and other commitments. They each keep a mechanic’s log book, and when they’ve worked enough hours they get a free flight.
“There’s so much more to aviation [than] just flying,” Klein said, “so it shows a lot of the students that they can be a part of aviation but you don’t have to fly.”
Kirscher said the experience students get working on planes and flying them is a big advantage and was invaluable to her as she worked her way into the profession.
The program is completely reliant on volunteers and donations. They were given a Zenith Zodiac CH 601XL—a plane Klein helped rebuild— that they finished in August 2017. After that the group restored a 1945

I STRIVE AT EACH APPOINTMENT TO GIVE PATIENTS THE TIME AND ATTENTION THEY NEED. I DON’T WANT PEOPLE WALKING OUT FEELING LIKE YOU WERE NOT HEARD OR THAT PERTINENT QUESTIONS WERE NOT ANSWERED. THE TRUTH IS, WHEN I TAKE A FEW EXTRA MINUTES TO LISTEN, I AM ABLE TO DO A BETTER JOB OF DIAGNOSING THE TRUE PROBLEM.”
“I BELIEVE IT’S HARD TO ‘FAKE’ CARING,” affirms Darwin Hurst, family nurse practitioner at Woodlands Family Medicine. “When people walk into my exam room, they are not an inconvenience; they are people who deserve my full attention and care. I think success is built on treating people with compassion and, of course, with solid evidence-based care.” Woodlands Family Medicine opened its doors in 2009, with Dr. Joan Bloom one of the founding providers. Darwin joined WFM in 2017, and that same year they moved locations to their new wellness center at 30544 Highway 200 in Ponderay. Woodlands is a group of providers including Bloom, Hurst and Dr. Lindsey Rupple. They are a full-service primary care clinic providing men’s and women’s health exams, along with pediatric care such as wellness, vaccinations and sports physicals. They also assist local businesses with work injury cases and have daily slots for same-day sick appointments. On the health campus, orthopedic care is also available with North Idaho Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. This allows Woodlands Family Medicine to do X-ray imaging of possible fractures or spinal injuries on-site.

problems. “I keep saying I would like to put up a picture in my exam room of an ostrich with his head in the sand. I think of that as exactly what we don’t want to do! If there is an issue, I always advocate to do what needs to be done to improve the situation.” He often encourages lifestyle changes and works with patients to make that change sustainable.
Hurst says he was inspired to enter this profession in order to help patients take the proper steps to make wise choices about their health. Finding and treating disease early, like diabetes for example, can dramatically improve the quality of life for patients in the long run. “Becoming a nurse practitioner put me in a unique position to partner with patients for better health.
Hurst has been a part of the Bonner County community for more than two decades. He grew up in Pennsylvania, and as a young man he spent time in Sweden. Upon returning, he says, “I decided that I needed bigger mountains and more snow than my home state could offer! I met my wife here and we have a daughter. I feel so fortunate to live in such a great place with a wonderful community of people.”
He finds it rewarding to be able to build long-term relationships with his patients while seeing them make positive changes in their daily lives. “I am very aware of the trust put in me to make good decisions regarding their personal health,” says Hurst. “That trust gives me a lot of satisfaction in my work. I get to both celebrate success and offer support in more difficult times.”
When not devoting time to his patients, Hurst enjoys skiing, running and mountain biking. He also volunteers at his church, helping with 4-and 5-year-old Sunday School, “which is always a fun whirlwind,” he smiles.
His philosophy of care regarding patient health is one of not minimizing

NOT FOR THE FAINT AT HEART Things to know to avoid running injuries
By Ryan Egan, Licensed Joint and Movement Specialist and Owner of MVMNT:GYM Sandpoint
A
s we approach summer, mud boots are swapped out for trailrunning and road-running shoes. As trails dry out from mud season, summer mountain exploration begins!
There are, however, some simple, easy changes to employ if you want to upgrade your running performance and decrease the likelihood of unnecessary and very common injuries.
Unfortunately, most runners are severely under equipped for the miles they seek, leading to an onslaught of running injuries and overuse issues. Everything from plantar fasciitis and IT band syndrome to knee pain and low back issues, running is not for the faint at heart!
First thing is to ditch the heel strike and begin landing on the mid foot with a slightly positive shin angle. Heel striking dramatically increases forces when landing and essentially acts upon the body like a brake. Heel striking also limits the loading potential of the powerful lower leg. Landing on the heel is also a huge contributor to shin splints as the toes “slap” down when fatigue sets in.
My mentor, who trains the world’s elite soccer clubs, says, “You don’t run to get in shape, you have to be in shape to run.” Albeit a bit cheeky but very true, since nearly 80 percent of people getting their miles in this spring will sustain some sort of injury.
Second, ditch the fancy footwear. Your shoes are not the issue, your foot and ankle are. Finding a slightly more low-profile shoe can give you better feel,

THE CALL OF THE OUTDOORS Summer is here so it’s a great time to get out and walk! lower your ankles’ center of gravity—which can reduce ankle sprains—and help you change to a more appropriate mid-foot strike. Honestly, fancy shoes were made so people could run farther and bypass the natural feedback loop of sore paws. This is a classic example trying to obtain fitness without the necessary foot and ankle health to withstand the mileage it takes to “get fit.” Third, practice some running skill work. Running is a single-leg activity, meaning that all of the work is being done by one leg at a time in alternating fashion. On the other side, all the force absorption, and energy recycling, is also done on one leg. So learning to be balanced, and equal, by engaging in running skill work can help you not run like you have one flat tire. Fourth is joint mobility work. Most people lack
the simple foot, ankle and hip prerequisites to hurdle themselves through space one leg at a time. Limitations in and around the foot are the biggest contributor to faulty mechanics and injury-prone movement flaws. Lastly, practice smarter movement-based warmups that engage the entire body, and better strength training, learning key strength-training exercises to strengthen the hips, knees, ankles, feet and the core. These can be done during nonrunning days and can really aid in unnecessary running woes. One thing to keep in mind is that a single strike of a person’s running stride can carry nearly six times their body weight in force. Meaning a 150-pound person creates nearly a half-ton of force each strike. It’s no wonder injuries are so prevalent.

PHOTOSENSITIVITY What it is and how you can protect your skin from it By Kristin Carlson, Medical Esthetician, Refined Aesthetics Med Spa, PLLC
S
ummer is in full swing, and we are all rushing outside to soak up the warmer temperatures and the sunshine! After being covered up all winter it feels great to shed the layers and warm up. But don’t run out into the sunshine without the proper consideration for your skin. Not only will you be more susceptible to burn, certain products in your skin-care routine or medications you take can cause photosensitivity. Let’s talk about what photosensitivity is, what causes it and how to avoid it. What is photosensitivity? Photosensitivity is an extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun and other light sources. UV rays come directly from the sun but also bounce off water, snow and even sand, causing indirect exposure from the elements around you. Symptoms of photosensitivity vary from mild to severe. The most common symptom is a skin rash or sunburn. In some cases, a sunburn can be so severe that blistering or peeling can occur. Reactions vary, depending on the length of exposure and what is in and on your body. What causes photosensitivity? There are many causes of photosensitivity. Medications such as certain antibiotics, diuretics, chemotherapy drugs and oral acne medications can cause photosensitivity. If you are given a prescription with a warning of photosensitivity or “to limit your sun exposure,” take it seriously. This means the medication has been known to cause a reaction to UV rays. Medical conditions such as Lupus can cause photosensitivity as well. It is also important to pay attention to ingredients in your skin-care products, which may cause sensitivity

SERVICES INCLUDE: Botox/Dysport • Dermal Fillers Sculptra Aesthetic • Skin Care to the sun. Tretinoin (or retinoids like Retin-A), alpha hydroxy acids (glycolic acid), beta hydroxy acids (salicylic acid) and benzoyl peroxide, cause a thinning of the outermost layers of the skin and increase sensitivity. While these ingredients are amazing for treating acne and signs of aging (fine lines and dark spots), they cause more damage with prolonged sun exposure. How do we avoid photosensitivity? The best way to prevent symptoms of photosensitivity is to limit the amount of time you spend in the sun. We know it’s the time of year when you want to feel the warmth of the sun on your skin! But keep in mind the risks and make SPF your new best friend. This is not just for those who are photosensitive—everyone should wear sunscreen daily. Also, wear a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and long sleeved lightweight clothing
to keep you out of direct sun exposure. UV rays are always more intense at higher altitudes, so if you’re heading to the mountains keep this in mind. If you are a sun lover and know you will be exposed regularly, you may consider putting those retinol products on the back shelf for the summer. After all, getting a sunburn is counterproductive for anti-aging. The fall is a great time to add these products back in to your routine when the sun is much less intense. Remember, don’t discontinue medications without talking to your health-care provider first. We want you to enjoy your summer. Go boating, hang out on the beach, take a bike ride or a long hike. Just remember to protect your skin—all your skin—with daily SPF application and protective clothing.

physicians and our generous donors and volunteers. Bonner General Health has 62 physicians on active medical staff. Recently we opened Bonner General Ear, Nose and Throat and hired a full-time otolaryngologist. We also added a psychologist and nurse practitioner in the Bonner General Behavioral Health Clinic, a fourth orthopedic surgeon at Bonner General Orthopedics, and soon we will bring on a full-time ophthalmologist. We are proud to partner with Schweitzer Mountain Resort to operate a First Aid Station staffed with registered nurses during the ski season.
Initially, the hospital was the infirmary building used at Farragut Naval Training Station. The building was barged from the southern part of Lake Pend Oreille to the current hospital location. The hospital has had many additions and renovations since, including major additions in 1972, 1978, 1988, 1998, 2000 and 2015. In 2013, Bonner General Hospital added the “doing business as” name of Bonner General Health to better reflect what we do and the multitude of services we provide. Approximately 75 percent of our business is outpatient, much of which is provided outside of the main hospital building. We also wanted our name to reflect that we are committed to improving the health of our community.
We continue to grow and improve our technology. Bonner General Health provides a multitude of diagnostic imaging services including MRI, 3-D mammography, CT, nuclear medicine, echocardiogram, fluoroscopy, bone mineral density tests (DEXA), ultrasound and x-ray.
The Health Services Building and Sky Bridge, located at 423 North Third Avenue, was completed in 2015. This enabled us to consolidate our services by moving Sandpoint Women’s Health, the Wound Care Center, Anticoagulation Clinic and Performance Therapy Services into the new building along with Human Resources, Patient Financial Services, Accounting and the IT department. This opened space in the main hospital building for other services to expand.
The services provided through our Performance Therapy Services rehabilitation clinics include but are not limited to aquatic therapy, cancer rehabilitation, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, hand therapy, and Parkinson’s LVST Big and Loud therapy. Bonner General Health will continue to grow and change to meet the needs of our community.

ARE YOU STRUGGLING
WITH PAIN? Pain Neuroscience Education could be the solution By Amanda Thome, DPT, Cornerstone Physical Therapy
PAIN NEUROSCIENCE EDUCATION HAS ACTUALLY BEEN FOUND TO BE FAR MORE EFFECTIVE IN
I
t is estimated that 144,000 people go to outpatient physical therapy every day for low back pain, and 110 million Americans suffer with chronic pain. It is undeniable that pain is an epidemic. What you may not know is there is a shift in the way we understand and treat pain. It has been shown that when health-care providers explain the source of someone's pain with terms like ‘wear and tear,’ ‘deterioration,’ ‘crumbling,’ ‘collapsing,’ ‘bulging’ and similar descriptors, it actually induces fear, anxiety and depression. As more and more research has come out in the last decade or so, it has been shown that the classic way many health-care providers looked at and explained pain to patients wasn’t the full picture and, in many cases, contributed to the perpetuation of pain. Did you know, if you take 100 people and do an MRI on them, 40 percent will have a bulging disc in their spine yet experience no pain? One in three people over 30 will have some sort of rotator cuff pathology yet will not have pain or limitations; at age 70, it climbs to two out of every three people. Interestingly enough one in every three college basketball players has arthritis in the knee, and anywhere from 25 to 50 percent of people without knee pain have arthritis at the knee on MRI. The above shows that you can have tissue damage without pain and you can have pain without evidence of tissue damage. Tissue health and pain are not the same thing. People may have had tissue damage that caused pain, but this damage has healed yet their pain persists. They go to the doctor and get imaging studies and leave without an explanation for their continued pain.

There is now strong research that tells us how pain can become chronic, widespread and even impact things like attention, sleep, memory and fatigue. What is even more exciting than having research to explain how this can happen is the fact that there is now gold-level evidence that supports pain neuroscience education (PNE) combined with graded and targeted exercises can treat patients struggling with many chronic pain conditions. Research even shows that if someone suffering from chronic pain actually has their health-care provider explain to them how pain happens in a way that allows the patient to understand pain, on day one their pain, function and fear all improve. Pain neuroscience education has actually been found to be far more effective in treating chronic pain than many of the medications prescribed to patients. For instance: For every two patients taught PNE, one will show improvements in their function. For every three patients taught PNE, one will have improved pain. This may not sound impressive until you compare it to common medical interventions. For instance: The medication gabapentin which is often prescribed to patients in pain is effective in one out of six, and antidepressants are effective in only one out of seven. The world of pain and our understanding of pain is constantly growing for the betterment of the patients we treat. If you or someone you know deals with chronic pain, you are encouraged to seek help from providers ready to treat your pain and conditions possibly through exercise and education.

O
AN ALKALINE
ne of our popular health diets is the alkaline diet. The premise is that if you make your body less acidic this will lower the risk of destructive diseases, like cancer. Test strips are used to measure and monitor the pH of urine. Foods and water are promoted that will neutralize harmful acids.
DIET
How acidic or alkaline something is can be measured by pH on a scale of 0 to 14. Your stomach is hopefully pretty acidic, say around 1.3 to 3.5. Blood on the other hand is slightly alkaline and is tightly maintained around 7.35 to 7.45. Enzymes that facilitate vital chemical reactions only work within this narrow range.
THE BENEFITS AND LIMITATIONS
Our lungs play an important role in maintaining consistent pH. They do this by varying the amount of carbon dioxide exhaled, which is more on the acidic side. The blood carries carbon dioxide into the lungs, and the brain controls the level of excretion by adjusting how deeply and frequently we breathe.
BY SCOTT PORTER, SANDPOINT SUPER DRUG
The kidneys also play a role through excreting compounds that are either acidic or alkaline. And the body makes changes in internal pH by using a chemical buffering system. Adjusting the proportion of carbonic acid and carbonate keeps the pH throughout the body balanced. Our pH levels vary. Skin ranges from 4.0 to 6.5. The fluid inside our cells rests between 6.0 and 7.2, bile for digestion goes from 7.6 to 8.8, and pancreatic fluid can be right at the top at 8.8. Urine can range from 4.6 to 8.0. You can change your urine pH quickly through food, liquid and supplements. This can be important if you get kidney stones or urinary tract infections. Growth of different bacteria varies by changes in the pH of your urine. Some stones will only form in a more acidic environment, while others prefer an alkaline home. It is important to understand that the pH of blood will not be the same as the pH of your urine or saliva. These are two separate and independent systems. Yes, what we eat has a dramatic effect on our health. There is no doubt about that. But what you eat, or drink, will not change the pH of your blood. Everything you eat and drink ends up at the same pH after stomach acid is neutralized. The body fights very hard to make sure nothing acidic makes it into the intestines. Drinking alkaline water only makes it harder for your digestion system to properly break down food because your body has to produce increased stomach acid. You can change the pH of your blood much easier if you hyperventilate. This would make your body more acidic and cause restriction in the blood vessels, especially in your brain. You’d immediately get dizzy and eventually pass out. Or you could hold your breath to make your body more alkaline with the same result. I don’t suggest either. Drinking lots of water is always a good thing. I do like the foods on the alkaline diet and consider much of it healthy, especially nutrient-dense whole foods. I just don’t expect it to change my body’s pH.

FAILURE How Tacoma’s Richard Kresser uses defeat as motivation BY ANNELI FOGT PHOTOS COURTESY OF RICHARD KRESSER
R
ichard Kresser stood outside a café in Bend, Oregon, devastated. He cried as he spoke to his girlfriend over the phone. “The trip’s over,” he told her.
His bicycle, and the 80 pounds of highly specialized gear that had been attached to it, was gone: stolen by a passerby in the less than 10 minutes he had been inside grabbing breakfast. It was early July of 2018 and Richard was nearly halfway through the Tour de Volcanoes—a human-powered, mostly self-supported challenge he dreamed up that would see him bike to and summit the 16 active volcanoes between Mount Lassen in California and Mount Baker in Washington. In total, he would cover 2,400 miles on his bike and gain 127,000 feet of elevation. On foot, the 16 summits would add up to 180 miles with nearly 80,000 feet of elevation gain.
replace the gear,’” he says. He took a day to regroup before picking up where he left off and riding 40 miles west to the Three Sisters. He summited all of them that day—36 hours after nearly scrapping the tour.
It was the most recent of the extreme adventures thought up by the Tacoma-based Army veteran and ultrarunner from Iowa who seeks out chances for failure and finds joy in overcoming it. His motto: “If you’re not scared, it’s not a big enough goal.” He had been planning Tour de Volcanoes for years and had already summited six volcanoes before he found himself at that cafe with only the clothes on his back, journal, phone and helmet. He was admitting defeat. It was uncharacteristic … and painful.
Sixty miles north was Mount Jefferson: a technical climb that Richard, who was summiting all of these volcanoes solo, was going into blind on a day with questionable weather. “I hadn’t seen the route,” he says. “Not knowing what I was getting myself into was really concerning, but taking a weather day would severely delay me. That day was a gray area where winds were decently strong, but they were not terrible. I was thinking, ‘I could maybe do it, but it’s taking a lot of risk.’”
“At that point, there’s anger and then there’s quickly acceptance,” Richard recalls of coming to the realization his bike was stolen. “Even if I got the bike, all the gear that I had for my very particular style of climbing would have taken so long and been so expensive to replace that it was that final sigh of … ‘I’ll just catch a flight and come home.’”
Richard recognized that while he wanted the summit, things could go awry quickly. So he forced himself to take a rest day and wait for better weather.
But Richard found motivation in his impending defeat and, after saying goodbye to his girlfriend, found a convenience store with a surveillance camera nearby. The employees there had seen a bike in the alleyway. It was his, but more than half of the gear on it had been stolen. “Now I had my bike and it was that acceptance of ‘I do have to keep going, and now I have even more of a hurdle of how to
SandpointLivingLocal.com
“That was such a moral conundrum,” he said. “Right after having taken 36 hours off for the bike being stolen, all I wanted to do was go, and having the reins pulled on me was so hard. That was the only day I took off.” He summited Jefferson the next day and encountered the steepest snow he’s ever climbed without a rope. Richard admits “it was pretty hairy,” but everything went well. After that, he knew the hardest parts were over.

“Then it was just like, ‘OK, don’t mess up now. You know all the rest of them,” Richard recalls. Over the next 13 days, Richard biked to and climbed up Mount Hood, Mount Saint Helens, Mount Adams, Mount Rainier, Glacier Peak and Mount Baker without a hitch. Back at the trailhead after summiting Mount Baker on that last day, he stopped the clock on the Tour de Volcanoes 25 days, nine hours and 58 minutes after first setting off up the slopes of Mount Lassen more than 2,000 miles south. Success. ***** The snowfield Richard was standing on continued upward in front of him at a 70-degree angle. It was 2am and the light from the full moon lit his path up to Mount Rainier’s summit. Looking down, he could see the headlights of cars making their way up the winding roads inside the national park. “It was that moment when I knew I needed more of this in my life,” Richard says. Born and raised in Iowa, the 21-year-old college student had never seen a mountain. Now, he was more than 1,700 miles from home on the side of one of the tallest in the contiguous United States. And he was elated. While Richard grew up in a family that spent time outdoors, most trips consisted of car camping and bike riding. “I knew nothing of adventure sports,” he says. So, when he picked up a magazine at the age of 11 and saw a person rock climbing on the cover, he was immediately intrigued. Seven years later, when it came time for him to go to college, he chose to study civil engineering at Iowa State University and joined Army ROTC with the hope that the military could help him get to the wild, natural spaces where he could climb. It did. During the summer between his junior and senior years, he and the rest of the cadets in his class were sent to Fort Lewis (now Joint Base LewisMcChord) for a three-week camp where Richard saw mountains—and Mount Rainier—for the first time. “Just walking out on the drill grounds and seeing this

OVER THE NEXT 13 DAYS, RICHARD BIKED TO AND CLIMBED UP MOUNT HOOD, MOUNT SAINT HELENS, MOUNT ADAMS, MOUNT RAINIER, GLACIER PEAK AND MOUNT BAKER WITHOUT A HITCH. massive mountain right there, it was amazing,” he recalls. “We never were allowed to leave the base, so I didn’t really get to experience it, but I was exposed to that.” He returned to the Iowa State campus that fall with a newfound desire to return West. And he wasn’t the only one. A few classmates he knew from being involved in the school’s outdoor recreation program sent an email later that semester asking who would be interested in a two-week road trip west the following summer to climb some of the Pacific Northwest volcanoes, including Rainier. Richard jumped at the chance. “We failed on every mountain in those two weeks except for Rainier,” Richard says. “I was a total [disaster], I had no idea what I was doing.” But he was hooked. “That trip, hands down, changed my life,” he said. He graduated in 2009 and was set to begin his four-year term of service with the U.S. Army
in Fort Hood, Texas. In a stroke of luck, he switched with another soldier who wanted to go to Texas and Richard ended up back at Fort Lewis. “I moved out here and then just went down the rabbit hole,” he says. During his four years at Fort Lewis, the marathon runner started climbing and summited all the major mountains in the area. By the time he completed his military service in 2013, he was looking for a challenge that would truly test his physical prowess. He had completed 50-mile running races before and always felt at the end that he “had more in the tank,” he says. He decided to return to Iowa for the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI)—a weeklong, 420-mile ride from the Missouri River to the Mississippi River. But he wouldn’t be biking, he’d be running. “I wondered if I could run 400 miles in seven days in the Iowa heat,” he says. In July of 2013, he became the first person to run the RAGBRAI route and immediately began thinking up his next challenge. Back

in Washington, while working ski patrol at Steven’s Pass, he concocted a plan for a brutal trip he coined Dick’s RASH. He would go up, down and around Rainier, Adams, St. Helens and Hood—230 miles with 71,000 feet of elevation gain—in seven days. Traditionally, a trip of that scale would take three times as long, and as he planned, Richard began to understand the magnitude of the undertaking. By his calculations, Rainier alone would take one day to summit and then two days to run around the 93-mile Wonderland Trail. “That’s half my time on one mountain. That was so intimidating,” he says. After two years of training, Richard took on the RASH in the summer of 2016. He started at Rainier where he summited and descended the glaciated 14,411-foot volcano in under 12 hours before heading straight for the Wonderland Trail where he went 43 hours with no real sleep, a sore throat and got caught in a surprise rainstorm 20 miles from the finish line.

“Morally, I was done,” Richard recalls in a blog post for the Mountaineers about that last day on the Wonderland Trail. “How could I continue in weather like this, already with a sore throat? ‘Just keep moving,’ I told myself. ‘You never know what will happen.’ After many hours, I finally made it to the van. I was in horrible shape and sure I wouldn’t be able to finish, but I couldn’t come up with an excuse to quit. I could still walk, the sore throat was bad but I could still eat, and I had no idea if weather was going to be bad or good the rest of the week. Well, got to try at least, right?” He did more than try. Richard completed the ascent, descent and around-the-mountain run of Adams in just over 18.5 hours and Saint Helens in 14.5 hours. After five days, only Hood was left, but Richard was done—“wore down,” as he recalled in the blog post. “On the drive down I-5 to Hood, I cried. Just bawled,” Richard writes in the post. “About nothing, about everything. It was the first time in days I was stationary and didn’t have anything else to think about. All of the emotions from the previous three mountains flooded over me, all the positives and all the negatives. And
“It kept getting closer and closer. I was crying again. It was so beautiful. I was at the summit.” to think I was only one mountain away from being done. So close ….” Richard’s 14-hour run around Hood was rough, but he kept moving forward and, after a threehour nap, he set off for the summit with skis on his back—determined to make this descent fun. But the ascent was hard. Richard found it hard to move uphill. “All my reserves were spent,” he writes. “Slowly, but surely, I made progress up Hood. It kept getting closer and

closer. I was crying again. It was so beautiful. I was at the summit.” In the parking lot after skiing what he calls “some of the happiest turns” of his life six hours after setting off for Hood’s summit and one week after beginning the RASH, there was no fanfare for Richard’s feat. “I was just walking back to my car after having just finished this big achievement. No one around me knew what I’d just did,” he said. But that’s just how he likes it. For Richard, these feats are not about gaining recognition or setting records. They’re about acknowledging the possibility of failure, using it as motivation, and overcoming. “It’s an internal feeling—that quiet satisfaction of being able to do something I set out to do—that’s why I do it,” he says. **** Professionally, Richard is a firefighter for the City of Everett, works for Steven’s Pass Ski Patrol in the winters and organizes Skimo— uphill ski touring— events in Washington state through the company he founded, Snow Goat Skimo.

Traveling with Kids? AV O I D T H E ST R E SS W I T H T H E S E T I PS BY PATTY HUTCHENS
You know your kids better than anyone. Are they the type who are flexible and can go with the flow or do they crave routine? Considering your children’s traits when it comes to planning a trip will help guide you through the planning process and help to avoid total meltdowns—for you and the kids!
DISCUSS YOUR PL ANS I N A D VA N C E
PLAN FOR D E L AY S
D O N ' T OV E R PAC K & GIVE THE KIDS INPUT
When planning your trip, be sure to talk about your plans in advance and, if your children are at the appropriate age, allow them to be involved in the planning process. Offer them options of various activities that you can all participate in and allow plenty of time for each stage of the trip so you are not rushed. Also, allow for downtime. While traveling can be exhilarating, it can be exhausting too. Try to keep kids’ bedtimes close to that which they have at home. By doing so, you will have a happier travel companion! You may also want to consider renting a home through Airbnb or VRBO as opposed to a hotel room so parents can have some time of their own after the kids go to bed.
Planning ahead for delays can help alleviate stress. If you are traveling by plane, be sure to pack extra snacks and activities for the kids to do in the event of a flight delay. Do you typically limit screen time while at home? This is the time to maybe ease up on those restrictions and allow the kids to have some added fun while keeping them occupied at the same time! For older kids, one thing that can help keep them busy is keeping a journal, either handwritten or on their laptop. It’s a way they can document their trip, and it can also provide them with something to do in the event delays take place.
Don’t over pack! Kids (and adults) tend to want to bring all they can on a trip. After all, it’s nice to have choices, right? Allow the kids to have some input into what goes into their suitcase, but remind them that whether it’s a backpack or a small roller bag, they will have to help transport all they bring. By all means, though, if they have a favorite stuffed animal or blanket that gives them comfort, that is a “must” when it comes to packing.

(NOUN) A STRONG DESIRE FOR OR IMPULSE TO WANDER OR TRAVEL AND EXPLORE THE WORLD
BREAK UP THE TRIP
B E P R E PA R E D F O R EVERY THING
CHOOSE ENGAGING ACTIVITIES
If you are traveling by car, especially with a toddler, be sure to break up the trip. It is natural to want to get in and just drive to our destination to arrive sooner than later, but a few hours into the trip you will quickly realize this is not realistic. When planning your trip, strategize as to where you can stop for breaks and allow your children to get some activity. Perhaps pack a picnic lunch and eat in a park where they can run around, play on a playground and let out some of that stored up energy.
Equip your car for anything that may come your way! Be sure to bring a lot of Ziploc baggies and a marker to label them. These can come in handy in a multitude of situations, especially snacks! Even if your child is potty trained, be sure to pack some wipes in the car. Whether it’s that spilled juice on the car seat or cleaning a messy face, you will be glad you brought them along. Also be sure to pack a little first aid kit for cuts and scrapes. Don’t forget to include medication—you never know when an upset stomach could sabotage your journey! If your children are little, also include painter’s tape and use it to cover outlets in hotels. It’s easy to use and is not damaging to surfaces the way masking tape can be.
Depending upon the age of your children, consider bringing a paper map along. While we have come to rely on Siri and our car’s navigation systems for directions, it can be fun for kids to follow along with the route and may possibly keep them from asking you, “How long until we stop?” Books on CD can also help make the trip go faster for everyone! Choose something that will engage your child. If you have satellite radio, there are several choices for kids’ channels as well. And when all else fails, be ready to break into song and have everyone else sing along! Family vacations are fun, and they don’t have to be stressful. Just remember, plan and pack accordingly and involve the kids as much as possible from the start. They’ll feel more invested, and that goes a long way to family harmony!

Budget Travel
How to plan a summer vacation on a tight budget By Marguerite Cleveland
S
ummer is upon us, and it is time for that annual rite of passage—the summer vacation. It can be an expensive extravaganza or you can choose a more frugal option. Some of my best memories of family vacations are the ones that were the least expensive. With a little planning and creativity you can have a fun vacation that won’t break the bank.
Staycation. The staycation is the ultimate budget vacation, but you have to make some rules first to ensure it is a vacation. The rules are: Decide the length of the vacation, determine a budget, stick to it and lastly no work. This last one is tough and must be agreed upon by all parties. No family yard work, no house projects and no working from home. Plan activities for each day and visit local attractions. Maybe invest in a family membership that you can use all summer at a local aquarium, museum or pool. Turn your backyard into a summer playground with fun yard toys. It’s low tech, but running through a sprinkler never gets old. Rent an outdoor movie screen for summer movies under the stars and purchase movie candy from the dollar store. The key is to spend time together as a family and just have some fun. At the end of the week, invest in a night at a waterpark hotel. For a family of four the cost is about the same as a day at a waterpark. Many hotels will let you check in early to use the waterpark and stay later the next day after

ROAD TRIPS ARE ONE OF THE MORE ECONOMICAL WAYS TO TRAVEL WITH A FAMILY VERSUS THE HIGH COST OF PLANE TICKETS TO A DESTINATION.
you check out to swim some more. Make sure to bring snacks to save money, as nothing builds an appetite like swimming. Summer Road Trip. Road trips are one of the more economical ways to travel with a family versus the high cost of plane tickets to a destination. The first rule of thumb is to plan how far you want to drive. For a weekend trip plan no further than a three- to four-hour drive. If you are planning for a weeklong trip, venture out about a seven- to eight-hour drive. Consider more scenic routes and research fun stops along the way. Next decide if you want to go to multiple destinations or make a base at one location. The more relaxing route is to pick a location and then venture out from there. When traveling with family, a cabin or vacation rental can save you money. You may pay slightly more than a hotel room but you can cut costs by cooking some of your meals. For budget lodging check state parks or campgrounds for low-cost cabin rentals. Websites like AirBnB. com or VRBO also offer options for economic vacation rentals. Spend some time researching your options and look for any specials at your destination. Often resorts will offer a free night if you stay for a certain number of days.
SandpointLivingLocal.com
Plan to eat breakfast at your lodging, have your big meal at lunch at a restaurant where lunch prices are less than dinner, bring back leftovers and supplement with other foods for an easy dinner. Purchasing local favorites or specialties makes a fun meal. Plan easy cookouts. You can also cook and freeze meals to bring with you. This allows the cook in the family to vacation without spending lots of time in the kitchen. For the car pack a snack box and a cooler with cold drinks. During the summer heat, beverages can quickly add up in costs if purchasing on the road. For savings on lodging, some surprising places offer deals. Groupon is a go to for local deals, but did you know they offer travel deals as well? Rakuten.com (formerly Ebates.com) offers cashback on hotels and vacations. A quick search revealed offers from 3 to 10 percent cashback on hotel websites, and discount sites like Expedia and TripAdvisor. You can double dip by going through Rakuten to access Groupon. You will get cash back on your Groupon discounted purchase—a win all around. Also, when searching for lodging, check the pricing on different dates. For example, in big cities with lots of business travel, rates are often more expensive during the week, and they offer specials on the weekend whereas a resort area is more costly on weekends than on weekdays.

Summer Cruise. A cruise is a more expensive endeavor, but if you are willing to wait until the last minute there are deals to be had. VacationsToGo. com is one of the best websites for discount travel. Although prices may be the same on other sites, they often have onboard ship credits and other perks available only through VacationsToGo. The key to making a cruise a good deal is you must be able to drive to the port, and the ship needs to start and end at the same port. Last-minute airfare for a family of four defeats the cost savings of booking last minute. At the time this article was written, the site had many Alaska cruise deals out of Seattle and Vancouver for as much as 79 percent off. This deal offered a price of $749 (not including taxes) per person for an ocean-view cabin with a brochure price of $3,498—and also threw in a $175 per cabin onboard credit. The less expensive cabins sell first, so oftentimes last minute you can pick up a great deal on an ocean-view or balcony cabin. One offer was less than $400 (not including taxes) a person for a seven-day Alaskan cruise. Once you are on your cruise you can save additional money by taking the time to plan your trip. Take advantage of all the things your cruise includes. Plan your shore excursions so that you eat all your meals on the ship. Shore excursions in Alaska are pricey, but by researching the ports of call you can save money. Many Alaskan ports are walkable. You can spend your time in port seeing quite a bit on your feet. One thing to be aware of if you book an excursion through the cruise line: They will make sure you are back or will wait for you if it is delayed when the ship
SandpointLivingLocal.com
is due to depart. You do not have this guarantee when you book a shore excursion through another business. When shopping look for unusual options for souvenirs to reduce your costs. In Sitka, the Russian Orthodox Church had a wonderful gift shop with very good prices; many under $10. When on the ship, look for deals that can save you money. Drinks can be pricey, but one cruise line offered a pub crawl through all the areas on the ship that served mixed drinks for not much more than the cost of one drink. At each stop you received a cocktail or shot themed for that stop. Some ships will offer wine tastings for a set price. When planning a budget vacation, the Internet is your friend. Research, research, research. This is the key to finding great deals. Read forums on websites. Facebook has travel pages and groups for every interest. The website for your destination is also a wealth of information. Send away for free area guides. Do a web search for coupons for an attraction you want to visit. Use Groupon for the destination you are traveling to for discounts on food, activities and even spa treatments. If you are willing to put the work in beforehand, it will pay off by lowering the cost of your vacation.

BLISTERED PEPPER + ARUGULA CHICKEN SALAD
Recipe & Photo Courtesy of Marina Gunn @marinagunn | MarinaGunn.com
INGREDIENTS: 2 cups arugula 5-7 sweet peppers 1/2 red onion (sliced thinly) 2 chicken breasts, shredded 2 tbsp. dijon mustard 1/2 tsp. of dried dill or 1-2 sprigs of fresh dill juice of 1 lemon pinch of salt 1-2 tbsp. olive oil
METHOD: • Place sweet peppers in a skillet with a tablespoon of olive oil on medium high for 5 to 6 minutes until crisp. Flip and cook for an additional 2 to 3 minutes, so that both sides are golden brown. • While the peppers are cooking, place arugula in a bowl and top with thinly sliced red onion and chicken; it’s the perfect addition to the salad. Also substitute fish or even a cooked egg! • In a small bowl, whisk dijon mustard with dill, lemon juice and a pinch of salt. Once combined, slowly add the olive oil while still whisking to allow the oil and mustard to emulsify and combine for a creamy dressing. • Once the peppers are cooked, top the salad with the dressing and peppers. Enjoy!

S
chweitzer Mountain is known throughout the nation as a top-tier winter mountain experience. People come from all over the world to experience its incredible powder, tight tree skiing, and world-class hospitality and accommodations. Year-round visitors know that the fun doesn’t end when the last of the snow melts. Beginning June 21 and running through early September, summer activities abound on the mountain including plenty of fun things to keep the kids busy. Besides the breathtaking views, you’ll find all sorts of family fun through the Schweitzer Activities Center. A dual zipline is available for those 8 and older weighing more than 60 pounds. The 700-foot long line allows you to take off side by side with a friend or child for a quick adrenaline rush. In the village you’ll find a trampoline jumper where kids are strapped into a harness and can attempt flips without fear of sailing off the trampoline. A 25-

foot climbing wall is also a favorite as they can try several different levels of difficulty as they make their way to the top. Kiddos also love stepping back in time for old-school mining techniques at the Sluice Box. You can purchase a bag from the activities center that’s guaranteed to have gems buried in it, waiting to be revealed. Daily and season passes are available for all activities or you can purchase single ride/ experience tickets as well. Many families also choose to ride the Great Escape Quad Chair to the top for even more amazing views. The village also offers plenty of free activities with an open tennis and basketball court, disc golf, playground, lawn games including giant chess and checkers, and of course hiking both the ski mountain and crosscountry trails. With smaller crowds and great cool summer weather, you’ll be sure to have a memorable day on one of the area’s most famous mountains.
