Spring Cleaning Your Marriage RENEW YOUR RELATIONSHIP DURING THE SEASON OF HOPE
BY JOY PETERSON, M.A. LICENSED MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPIST. AUTHOR OF “22 MYTHS OF DIVORCE” AND “DISCOVERING A DYNAMIC MARRIAGE” DISCOVERINGDYNAMICMARRIAGE.COM
MARCH PROMISES renewal and hope. So how about “spring cleaning” your marriage? During the courtship, lovers talk about dreams and visions of future careers and success, but few discuss moral, ethical, spiritual, financial and lifestyle values. Shared values form the bedrock of a successful marriage. Exploring and Adopting Values. For example, regarding honesty, is it merely telling the truth? Does honesty apply to tax returns? Secretly stashing funds? Concealing purchases? Hiding raises or bonuses? Hiding compulsions or addictions? What does honesty mean in your values? Is honesty or integrity your goal? Is there a difference? Examine the values you hold as standards of conduct. Learn to collaborate rather than compromise. Collaboration seeks to create something new and distinctive in resolving conflicting goals, ideas or beliefs. Fidelity. Fidelity is where transparency and integrity demands higher standard than honesty. Does fidelity exclude pornography? Sexting? Sharing secrets with friends of the opposite sex? Establish your standards and boundaries. Trust. Deep emotional connection requires trust. Inability to control anger, stress, moods or behavior undermines trust. Accepting responsibility for consequences of choices is maturity. Fairness. Trust requires an underpinning of justice and equality. Crazy-making. Denying a secret, mood or feeling that a spouse is picking up on makes

them feel crazy and in a double bind; do I trust my partner or my intuition? Transparency. In risking rejection by revealing fears, dreams, faults, failures, and inadequacies, you discover if you are loved unconditionally. Secrets vs. Personal Privacy. Do I have to give up all privacy to be in a committed relationship? What is the line between personal privacy and a secret that threatens relationship? There’s a simple guideline to honesty and fairness —the Golden Rule! Autonomy and Self-awareness. Honesty demands courage and self-awareness. If you expect honesty from others you must be scrupulously honest with yourself. Personal Integrity. Real intimacy demands honesty beyond mere truth-telling. Be true to yourself. Grow up and confront insecurities and self-deception. Money. Is how money is earned or spent less important than what money represents for you? Is it a means to an end or an end in itself? How much time and energy will you invest in acquiring money and stuff? What will you sacrifice to have them? Healthy and Satisfying Sex. Intimacy is often confused with sex. Partners need to honestly express what priority sex is to them. Negotiate an agreement that satisfies sexual appetites and desires. Happy Spring!

Spring Makeover CHECKOUT THE NEW TRENDS IN KITCHEN CABINETS
BY ANNIE NYE, INTERIOR DECORATOR, PONDERAY DESIGN CENTER
IT’S SPRING and most of the new product introductions will be making their appearances over the next month or so. We’ve seen a lot of the new cabinet introductions already, and I can tell you they are more modern looking in both shape and colors. Grays are warmer with tones of taupe and tan. Door styles continue to be offered in traditional raised panel or shaker style, but have additional options of edge profiles, additional grooved moldings, and some have curved or “pillowed” profiles that soften the industrial look. Cabinet companies that used to offer only the traditional framed options are now beginning to manufacture frameless cabinets as well. These tend to be more modern looking as frameless cabinets do not have a face frame on the front of the box – the doors and drawers ARE the fronts of the cabinet boxes. These are often times used in more contemporary kitchens, commercial kitchens, and next time you are sitting in the exam room waiting for your doctor to come in, you’ll notice they probably have frameless cabinets there too. Cabinets are becoming more and more the focal point of houses. Kitchens are the hub of
entertainment and so wide open access to that area is more popular in new construction and also in remodeling. Walls that used to divide kitchens from dining and living areas are being removed to create more open floor plans. This means cabinets, countertops and backsplashes are front and center and “on display.” People use this openness to show them off. We also see a lot of the remodels now removing the soffits that were once popular and instead taking the cabinets all the way to the ceiling, providing more storage space and eliminating that feeling of the low ceiling. Instead, the kitchen is “taller” and feels more expansive. It seems like today’s kitchen designs are able to make better use of smaller floor plans as well with all the internal cabinet components that beef up your storage capacities. It’s not uncommon for the kitchen designs to include trash pullouts, and base tray divider cabinets to house cookie sheets, muffin tins and cutting boards. There’s an assortment of pullout options for spices, cooking and baking dishes, and even organizers for lids, pans and cutlery. With all these options, you just need to tell us where they should be based on your cooking style, and we can get your kitchen efficiently organized! There are other elements being incorporated to make kitchens more efficient, like multiple sinks, pot-fillers behind the cooktop, multiple ovens, microwave drawers, pop-up vents, sink disposal buttons and compost canisters. Even with all these more modern amenities, we can’t lose focus of the “timeless” kitchen. One of the biggest concerns people have with remodels or even building new is that they don’t want to create a space that’s too trendy and will be outdated in a few years.

SILVER & FIT & SILVER SNEAKERS ACCEPTED HERE! I think there are a couple of ways to keep the cabinets timeless. One is to go with an opaque finish in a cream color. This is neutral so if you opted to go with gray highlights either in paint or accessories, you can change that to a warmer color in the future and your cabinets are still “fresh.” You can also go with a dark colored wood stain. This also will be neutral because over the years and exposure to ultraviolet light, it can’t yellow (remember the oak everyone

is trying to replace, paint or decorate around now). If you go with darker cabinets now, you won’t have that issue a few years down the road. Both of these colors are neutral and regardless of door style chosen, can coordinate with your countertops and backsplash, so if you wanted to go trendy, the backsplash is something that can easily be replaced ten years from now and would be a much less expensive update than new cabinets. No matter what, each year we will have a spring with new product introductions. We’ll see some pretty cool things that we may have or want to have or we may see some things that will leave us scratching our heads wondering why anyone would want that as an option. Either way, it’s great because we will have choices. Go check out your local showroom for options and see if there is anything you can’t live without!

YOU NEED TO SAVE and invest as much as possible to pay for the retirement lifestyle you’ve envisioned. But your retirement income also depends, to a certain degree, on how your retirement funds are taxed. And that’s why you may be interested in tax diversification. To understand the concept of tax diversification, you’ll need to be familiar with how two of the most important retirement-savings vehicles — an IRA and a 401(k) — are taxed. Essentially, these accounts can be classified as either “traditional” or “Roth.” When you invest in a traditional IRA or 401(k), your contributions may be tax-deductible and your earnings can grow tax deferred. With a Roth IRA or 401(k), your contributions are not deductible, but your distributions can potentially be tax-free, provided you meet certain conditions. (Keep in mind, though, that to contribute to a Roth IRA, you can’t exceed designated income limits. Also, not all employers offer the Roth option for 401(k) plans). Of course, “tax free” sounds better than “tax deferred,” so you might think that a Roth option is always going to be preferable. But that’s not necessarily the case. If you think your tax bracket will be lower in retirement than when you were working, a traditional IRA or 401(k) might be a better choice, due to the cumulative tax deductions you took at a higher tax rate. But if your tax bracket will be the same or higher during retirement, then the value of tax-free distributions from a Roth IRA or 401(k) may outweigh the benefits of the tax deductions you’d get from a traditional IRA or 401(k). So making the choice between “traditional” and “Roth” could be tricky. But here’s the good news: You don’t necessarily have to choose, at least not with your IRA. That’s because you may be able to contribute to both a traditional IRA and a Roth IRA, assuming you meet the Roth’s income guidelines. This allows you to benefit
SandpointLivingLocal.com

from both the tax deductions of the traditional IRA and the potential tax-free distributions of the Roth IRA. And once you retire, this “tax diversification” can be especially valuable. Why? Because when you have money in different types of accounts, you gain flexibility in how you structure your withdrawals — and this flexibility can help you potentially increase the amount of your aftertax disposable income. If you have a variety of accounts, with different tax treatments, you could decide to first make your required withdrawals (from a traditional IRA and 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan), followed, in order, by withdrawals from your taxable investment accounts, your tax-deferred accounts and, finally, your tax-free accounts. Keep in mind, though, that you may need to vary your actual sequence of withdrawals from year to year, depending on your tax situation. For example, it might make sense to change the order of withdrawals, or take withdrawals from multiple accounts, to help reduce taxes and avoid moving into a different tax bracket. Clearly, tax diversification can be beneficial. So after consulting with your tax and financial advisors, consider ways of allocating your retirement plan contributions to provide the flexibility you need to maximize your income during your retirement years. Paying the Price THE COST TO INSURE TEEN DRIVERS
!
y m A r o e i d o Call J
BY TREVOR CAMPBELL
CAN I DRIVE? These three little words take on a whole new meaning when you’re the parent of a teen.
When anyone gets behind the wheel of a car risks are involved. You might be a great driver, but you can’t control what’s happening around you. Those risks only increase when we talk about teen drivers. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), with each mile, teen drivers are threetimes more likely to crash than someone 20 years and older. As a dad these statistics are frightening. As someone with more than 20 years in the insurance industry, these statistics make insuring teens one of the most costly challenges for both parents and insurance carriers. Insurance companies look at a number of things when calculating insurance rates, including age. In 2013, car crashes remained the leading cause of death for 13 to 19 year olds in the U.S. That kind of information is hard for carriers to ignore as they consider the risk involved with insuring young drivers. We often hear from parents unsure how best to handle protecting their teens. Whether you’re a parent who currently has a young driver or one who might in a few years – it’s good to know what to expect when your teen is ready to hit the road. Teen Drivers: Common Questions Q. If my teen has a permit, do I need to notify my insurance company?
teen get his or her own insurance policy? A. In order to get a separate policy, your teen must be the registered owner of the vehicle they’re driving. Some states do not allow anyone under 18 years of age to be registered owners of a vehicle. If your teen gets their license at 16, they may not be eligible for their own auto insurance policy until they turn 18 and are the registered owner of a car. Be sure to research your own state’s requirements and speak to your insurance agent if this is something you would like to pursue.
Don’t Leave your insurance coverage to LUCK!
Q. My son has his license, but we don’t let him drive due to grades. So we don’t have to add him to our policy, right? A. Wrong! Even if you have placed restrictions on your son or daughter’s ability to drive, once they get their license they need to be listed as a driver on your current policy. Insurance carriers are working to find ways to reduce the cost of adding young drivers to parent’s policies, including offering good student discounts. By tying scholastic achievement with the opportunity to be licensed, many carriers have found these discounts helpful for parents from a pricing standpoint. Yes, your car insurance rates will go up, in some cases by a lot once you have a licensed teen driver. Working with an independent agent who has access to multiple carriers can help you find the best protection option without breaking the bank.

A. It’s a good idea to contact your agent once your teen gets his or her permit, but it will not change your auto policy. Teen drivers with learner’s permits are still covered under the parent. That changes once your teen gets his or her driver’s license.

Cat Declawing KNOW THE FACTS BEFORE YOU REQUEST THIS CONTROVERSIAL SURGICAL PROCEDURE BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL AFTER 25 YEARS OF PRACTICING veterinary medicine, I have still not heard the end of it – cat declawing continues to remain one of the hottest, most controversial topics in the world of companion animal welfare. Many pet owners have expressed dismay at how much damage their cats can do with their claws. Shredded shoes, clothes, torn drapes, scratched upholstery, snagged carpets. You get the picture? To some owners it seems like their pet has it in for them. Yet, to your kitty cat, scratching is a perfectly normal feline function! Cats need to scratch, for physical and emotional reasons, and we need to provide our cats with places to dig in with joy!
We recommend that cat owners use avoidance and training. Here are some suggestions and tips: Nail trimming. If you are at all unsure of how to correctly trim nails, it would be good to observe an expert. Ask your vet, a pet groomer or someone with experience to demonstrate. You want to be certain that you know how to do it correctly. Specifically, extend the claw without causing discomfort to your cat by pressing too hard. It’s also useful to be able to locate the vein inside the claw. (You want to stay well away from it to avoid great discomfort to your cat and a shower of blood!) When in doubt, trim only a tiny bit from the very tip. File the tips with an emery board.
The surgical declaw procedure results specifically in an amputated “fingertip” on each paw. It’s pretty radical and many countries have outlawed it, claiming that even with adequate pain control post operatively, it is barbaric, unnecessary, and leads to even more behavioral issues. They claim that many of these same declawed cats eventually wind up euthanized or in the shelter. The very thing that good intentioned owners were trying to avoid. You see the dilemma.
SandpointLivingLocal.com
Provide alternatives for scratching. Give your cat his own place to scratch, one you can reasonably hope he will find more appealing than your carpet or couch. Vertical scratchers usually prefer posts and poles, horizontal scratchers use scratching pads. Posts are pieces of wood vertically anchored to a flat base (to imitate a tree) and are covered with carpet,
22
rope, cork or woven fabric. Scratching pads are rectangles made of corrugated cardboard, usually around 18 inches long and either 6 or 10 inches wide. Place these in prominent areas of the house where your pet likes to frequent! Teach your cat to use the post! Once he or she knows what it is for, you can slowly move it to the part of the room where you’d like it.
To some owners it seems like their pet has it in for them. Yet, to your kitty cat, scratching is a perfectly normal feline function! Invest in a trial of “Soft Paws.” They are easy to apply acrylic nails that stay on for one to two weeks (small learning curve taught in veterinary clinics). Keep anxiety and boredom to a minimum. Pheromones like “Feliway” act as a mood stabilizer and calm cats in multiple cat households. Make home furnishings less desirable. Place strips of aluminum foil across your couch or chair (most cats dislike the crinkly feeling underfoot). Use “Sticky Paws,” strips of stickiness that you may place on problem furniture. Cover the side of a chair with a plastic sheet. Of course, these are all temporary until you can train them to scratch the “cool” stuff you just made or bought. Be patient during the training period, don’t remove the props too early! Spray off-limit areas with bitter orange or apple repellant (available in pet stores). Declawing shouldn’t be the first strategy for solving a scratching problem. If you can, start early, when you first get your kitten. Give your felines a chance to learn and to follow the rules. You’ll be surprised at how well it works out.

Forging Ahead with GlowForge CLARK FORK HIGH SCHOOL MAKING STRIDES IN TECHNOLOGY
BY DUSTIN HOFFMAN
WHAT DOES A WELL-ROUNDED education look like in our technological age? I’m not an authority on the subject, and answers to that question abound with no lack of conversation when it comes to philosophies. But it is intriguing to note the answer and corresponding activity of one school in our community. Clark Fork High School (CFHS) is doing something unique with their students. They’ve started a series of “tracks”; classes from which the students can choose to focus their study one day each week. Students and staff spend 38 days out of the classroom following one of four tracks: the Arts Track, the Culinary Arts Track, the Tech Track, or the Outdoor Track. While

very different topics, each track incorporates public speaking and writing into its course. The track system originated as a creative solution developed among the faculty. They found that, after meeting certain mandates, they had a good deal of time remaining with the students. They were determined to create areas of in-depth study to offer students an experiential style of learning. Each track is meritorious, giving kids the opportunity to thoroughly explore areas of interest in ways that the traditional classroom could not facilitate. Marty Jones is the mind behind TechTrack at CFHS. He teaches science and technology, and

on those special track days, he assists kids in “designing and building...things.” TechTrack is not your basic high school shop class. These kids are in fact designing and building things such as an electric bicycle, electric scooters, an electric motorcycle, and a farnsworth fusor (the latter is worth a search on the old Internet). These projects seem ambitious. The key to their accomplishment, besides an invested teacher like Mr. Jones, is the track approach. Mr. Jones commented, “If you try to do this stuff in a regular class schedule, it’s tough to get anything done. You get in there, you get them [the students] settled, you give them some instruction, they have ten minutes to work, and then it’s time to clean up. Now they’re working on a variety of projects. They have enough time to focus and get stuff done, to learn new skills. I’m there to show them how to use new tools, how to make things.” Not only is Mr. Jones teaching the kids new skills and instructing them in the use of new tools, he’s working to put cutting-edge tools at their disposal.
sights set on a GlowForge, a wireless 3-D laser printer that fits on your desktop. In order to fund the purchase of a GlowForge, Mr. Jones set up a gofundme.com campaign. When I spoke to him recently, they had raised about a third of the money needed to purchase the equipment. But that did not last long. I received a phone call from Mr. Jones not long after our conversation and he said that thanks to an anonymous donation, the students of CFHS tech track will get their GlowForge. Jones said that they will share the new equipment with the Art Track. He explained, “For a lot of the kids, that’s their future, working with technology. It unhinges their creativity.” I also spoke with the principal of CFHS, Phil Kemink, who said, “What a sweet opportunity for kids to work with emerging technologies.” His excitement about the TechTrack and the GlowForge was obvious. Observing the capabilities of GlowForge, there seems but a fine line between art and function. Artists and inventors are not limited by their

How many aspiring inventors will discover they are artists? Perhaps the distinction is only a matter of means. Students at CFHS have a unique opportunity to receive a hands-on education, one that challenges them to solve problems and interact creatively with the world through the use of technology. If you are interested in donating to the TechTrack, please contact Clark Fork High School directly. BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
A LOCAL
TRADITION OVER THE PAST 70 YEARS there have been many businesses that have come and gone in our community, but it takes something special to have the longevity like that of Carpet One Floor and Home. “The business was originally started in 1945 by the Hagadone family,” said Carpet One owner John Darling. “Our corporation, JS & G, Inc., purchased it in 1984, and we then joined Carpet One Floor and Home in 1994.” So just how does a local business succeed during the ups and downs of the economy? For Carpet One Floor and Home, their success is in large part due to their dedication to consistently exceeding the expectations of each and every customer. They accomplish this by demonstrating a superior understanding of their products and services and by providing an honest, genuine, hometown experience. And as part of a cooperative, they can offer great pricing and selection. “A cooperative is when a local business joins other businesses to bring the customer a competitive alternative to big corporations,” explained Darling. “When shopping with co-ops you get expertise without compromise. From pricing to selection, you can purchase competitively with a vested interest in your community.” As part of Ponderay Design Center, which also includes Sandpoint Furniture and Selkirk Glass and Cabinets, Carpet One Floor and Home has everything one needs. A full service turnkey retail flooring store, they can help you choose the perfect wood, tile, carpet, sheet vinyl, luxury vinyl plank and tile, laminate or area rug to meet your taste and budget. Darling takes pride in providing the best service and products possible and is especially pleased to be living and working in Sandpoint. Born and raised here, Darling left Sandpoint after high school to join the United States Navy where he sailed aboard an aircraft carrier throughout the world. Once he completed his enlistment he lived in Seattle. But in 2000 he chose to return to his hometown along with his wife Debbie to raise their three children and join the family business. And he has accomplished much since then, but does not take all the credit. “I attribute the success of Carpet One Floor and Home to two things – the first is to Dale and Vicki Jeffres, my stepfather and mother. Their vision and intuition for the industry is what made us a Carpet One member,” said Darling. “The second is to Carpet One Floor and Home membership. We would not be where we are today without their passion and commitment to their members.” In addition to helping his customers at Carpet One Floor and Home, Darling and his staff enthusiastically give back to the community they call home. They are supporters of Celebrate Life, the Bulldog Bench, the Bonner County Fair and Rodeo as well as the Convoy of Hope, which first came to Sandpoint last October.

An avid outdoorsman, Darling said he and Debbie also enjoy traveling around the Northwest watching their children compete in sporting events. If you are in the market for new flooring, remember you don’t have to drive out of town to get the best selection and prices. Shop local and know that you are supporting a business that reinvests its money back into the community. “All of us at Ponderay Design Center are proud to call North Idaho home,” said Darling.

STUDENT LED INITIATIVE IMPACTING THE LIVES OF OTHERS
NOT 10 HOURS or even 10 minutes. Just 10 seconds of kindness can transform a day, change a life, even save a life. That is the belief Sandpoint High School students are proving to be true. When the shadow of suicide passed over Sandpoint High School not once but three times last year, the chilling effects were deeply felt by the entire student body. And within Calli Laybourne, a sophomore whose sunny spirit warms everyone, compassion stirred and would not be stilled. She awoke one morning with the proactive concept of 10 Seconds of Kindness. “I told my mom about my idea and she was totally supportive,” recalls Calli, “Then I talked with Ava and Troy and Kassidy and got them on board,” referring to freshmen Ava Blaser and Kassidy Walker, and Kassidy’s senior class mentor Troy Nutt.
“We came up with ideas to make people feel more welcome and comfortable, so they wanted to be at school where they could be cared about, and there were people to rely on and they could talk about everything,” says Ava, as Kassidy chimes in. “In a small amount of time, you can have a positive connection with someone that could make their day, even affect their whole life, just like something negative could ruin their day or life.” Troy adds, “One of the reasons I wanted to help start this was I know what it’s like to have someone tear you down, even jokingly, and I know what it’s like to have a friend who builds you up even when you don’t expect it.” “The premise is to spread kindness throughout the school,” says counselor Cindy Albertson, “and have that be part of the glue making us a group that takes care of each other rather than tearing each other down. And when anything is student-driven, it has more effect and power and potential.”

One of their shared concerns was the surge in anonymous Twitter polls used negatively by hundreds of students to rate and berate each other. The landmines of character defamation and social ruin were everywhere on social media. Insults and criticisms thrived on “To Be Honest” and “To Be Rude” on Instagram. 10 Seconds of Kindness wanted to end the social media vendettas. Their first action in creating a culture of acceptance and encouragement was as bold as it was basic. In a beautifully symbolic gesture, they held open the school doors every morning the week before winter break and welcomed all the students with hot chocolate, cookies, candy canes, Christmas music and smiling words of welcome. As simple as it was, it initiated a social seismic shift at the school. Since their first outreach efforts, which included putting positive-message hearts on each and every student locker, Kassidy says, “A

lot of people ask how they can help, both the community and students.” Ava adds, “After the winter break, we got lots of positive feedback. People have signed up to volunteer!” The negative Twitter polls have dwindled away. In contrast, The 10 Second of Kindness Twitter and Facebook pages are, “awesome!” enthuses Kassidy. Another student goodwill group called the Good Vibes group will meld with 10 Seconds of Kindness, and the programs will be enveloped within Sources of Strength, which is part of Idaho Lives – a suicide prevention project for which Albertson has written a grant. “Sixty students will be trained in March in this program. It is designed to build hope and to make it clearly obvious where you can get help,” says Albertson, “Source of Strength will be the unifying hub, helping create a positive culture and connectivity along with messages of hope, help and strength. And it will be designed to support the full spectrum of students.” Albertson acknowledges the teen years are necessarily years of developing the ability to cope and achieving a resiliency important to surviving and thriving in life. “Our young people need support and help in this critical process of self-definition and social growth,” she explains. “We are dedicated to providing that, and these positive programs combined
with student outreaches are central to our efforts.” As young as they are, Calli, Ava, Kassidy and Troy are braver and more beautiful than they even know as they invite human nature to be kind rather than influential or popular through unkindness. Calli Laybourne’s interest in people steps over all invisible boundaries traced by social groups, choice of academic/athletic pursuits or personality differences. She sits down beside loners, the shutdown and the shunned, and her friendly interest awakens in them the hope that they are fine just as they are. “No one should change who they are to get approval or acceptance,” insists Calli. “It’s so exciting when people simply are who they truly are, at all times and with everyone. And if they want to change, it’s according to their own destiny, their own desires and ideas.” Asked what career appeals to her, Calli says she is interested in being an attorney with an

IN FOCUS Just Say No Coalition educates the community on underage drug and alcohol abuse BY TERESA PESCE
YEARS AGO, a cheerleader in my high school was caught smoking a cigarette in the bathroom. She was promptly divested of her pom-poms and taken off the cheering squad. It was the only ”drug incident” of the year at the school. Times have changed. Drug and underage alcohol abuse are an epidemic, and past solutions haven’t been effective enough. Now, the Community Coalition for Substance Abuse Preventions (CCSAP), also known as the 7B Drug Free Initiative, is recalibrating the standard community approach “from reaction to prevention,” according to the new Executive Director, Erika McCall. With a degree in social work and a career working with at-risk populations, McCall has, in her own words, “…a passion for prevention because I see how hard it is to deal with after the fact.” The CCSAP coalition of parents, law enforcement, health care professionals and concerned communities is in the first year of a four-year grant focusing on prescription drug and underage alcohol abuse. Explains McCall, “We provide resources to the community in targeting these two areas of growing concern, bringing in speakers and different programs.” “Our main philosophy is about empowering the kids so they can feel they are part of the conversation and part of the strategy,” says McCall. “Teens want decision-making power – to be involved in the ‘Why Not?’ rather than

just be told ‘Do Not.’” That kind of decision isn’t made from the outside in; it’s made from the inside out. What is the biggest inducement to teen drug abuse today? Not a drug dealer on the corner offering the first one for free. It’s social media and the Internet, according to McCall. Growing and morphing at cancerlike rates, social media is peer pressure on steroids – powerful, relentless and merciless. Within the smiling vernacular of “friends” and “chat,” the Internet promises connection, but the inverse effect is a capacity to punish with isolation. Castigation, embarrassment, false rumors and lies are avalanched upon teens who resist the new drug party culture. At precisely the age where acceptance is everything, exclusion is the most effective threat of all. “They just can’t stand the unrelenting pressure,” says McCall. “Teens feel like they can’t escape it because they’re always attached to their cell phones and social media.” The CCSAP coalition believes that a teen’s well-founded decision is the key element of resistance to peer pressure. “Our events prompt teens to think what drug use would look like in their life so they can arrive at and own their decision,” says McCall.

A “Reality Party” is one way CCSAP educates parents and also give the teens a participative voice. “We bring in a facilitator who does these events all over the country, and get together a group of high schoolers to re-enact a party. The kids get to share what they know – indirectly – with their parents and community, and feel a part of the prevention process.”

McCall attended a recent Reality Party event at the Sweet Magnolia Bed & Breakfast, where parents were brought in groups to view teens’ staged scenes of what kids may encounter at an innocent-sounding “party.” McCall remembers with emotion, “We saw violence, passing out, sickness, witnessed prescription drug abuse and lots of binge drinking activities. The most impactful part of it,” she recalls, “was watching the decisions the kids were making when they were intoxicated. It was a view into what could happen and what does happen.” Where are the adults in these situations? McCall responds, “Hosting parents feel they are doing a favor hosting a party at their house where it is ‘safe’ because they take the kids’ car keys so they can’t drink and drive. But the kids find a way around it. In this staged party, we watched one teen steal their car keys back, get in the car and drive off. We saw the cops come because the kid had been in an accident.” Another communication-building event is a “Tell It To Me Straight” dinner. “We bring teens and community members together for open communication. The kids aren’t there to make a confession to their parents,” she clarifies. “It’s more designed to be a safe place to say what’s on their mind. ‘I’m worried about this – here’s what is going on at the school… what I see at parties.’ We hope adults get an eye-opening about what teens see and experience on a daily basis.” CCSAP is also funded by a mini-grant to education on abuse of overthe-counter drugs, such as pain killers, cough medicine, anti-acids, even Tylenol. Many parents are unaware of the abuse of such drugs and equally unaware that their own bathroom cabinets may be the source.

Our main philosophy is about empowering the kids so they can feel they are part of the conversation and part of the strategy.
“We’re doing the Lock Your Meds Campaign,” says McCall. “It will focus on educating parents and the community about young people who may come into your home, ask to use the bathroom, and then steal prescription medicines. They may sell the pills, or use them in a trend referred to as a ‘Skittles’ party. The kids are instructed to go through their family’s prescriptions and bring some of the pills to the party where the pills are all dumped into a bowl,” describes McCall. “Then they pass the bowl and everyone takes a handful and eats them like candy with no idea what they’re taking or the negative drug interactions. “We also do a Drug Take-Back day,” she continues, “where people can bring their unused prescription medications to City Hall for safe disposal. A lot of times people save their medications, thinking ‘someday’ they may use them, and then their teenager or their teen’s friends take just two or three pills from a prescription bottle, and the parent has no idea the pills have been taken because the teen leaves the remaining pills in the bottle.”

Proactively, CCSAP is also seeking to partner with pharmacies to put stickers on their bags that remind the recipient to lock up their medications. “Some drugs are in such demand,” she reveals. “Possession of them makes you a target for burglary.” An early start in the interactive, educational process on drug and alcohol abuse is now imperative. “When we had a conversation with the Idaho State Patrol about drug use and age, we were told that 12 years old is the age they really start experimenting. So if you’re starting with a student of 17, you’re way behind,” says McCall. Ideally, the coalition members would like to start talking to parents when their children are little. “It isn’t an issue when they’re small, and yet by the time they are 12, the voice in their head saying ‘This is not the right choice for me’ should be their own voice, saying ‘I know enough about this and I’m going to choose not to.’” Community participation in CCSAP is invited and encouraged. “We’d like to see the coalition grow and expand to all of Bonner County, not just Sandpoint,” enthuses McCall. For more information, contact Erika McCall at Erika.mccall@lposd.org or attend a CCSAP meeting. All meeting information is available on their website at www.7bdrugfree.org.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
TREAT YOURSELF! FOR SARAH HESS, providing the most unique and enjoyable customer experience for her clientele and supporting the result with quality products are at the forefront of her mission as salon owner of Stylebar. Hess has earned a superior reputation locally for her expertise as a hair stylist. She had been dreaming of a salon of her own since she made the move to North Idaho just over six years ago. Her dream of a salon that would offer every beauty service in one inviting and attractive setting came to be on January 1 when she opened Stylebar Beauty Bar in downtown Sandpoint. “Over the years I have seen a lot of missed opportunities,” said Hess of salons that did not offer a full array of services. Using the knowledge and wisdom gained as manager of a chain of high-end, family-owned hair salons in California, she has created a unique salon experience in North Idaho. At Stylebar Beauty Bar Hess and her staff of nine can do it all! They offer pedicures, manicures, hair extensions, color, balayage, Brazilian blowouts, Japanese straightening, waxing, threading, organic spray tanning and massages. “We will soon be adding an aesthetician to our staff as well who will do eyelash extensions and full aesthetics,” she said. “I was very selective on who I chose to join me at Stylebar Beauty Bar. I filled the space with people who I knew would help me build my business. When you do it like that, things just fall into place.” Included in her staff are Katey Bramsen, hair stylist and makeup artist; Jenn Hartley, hair stylist; Angela Endicott, senior stylist; Kristen LeGrand, hair stylist, Tera Karasek, hair stylist, Danielle DeMarco, creative nail artist; Amy Gerard, nail specialist; and Amy Shroader, massage therapist. Her team is definitely establishing Stylebar Beauty Bar’s presence as the go-to salon, having seen 680 clients since opening – and that does not include Hess’ clients. The fact that Stylebar Beauty Bar is a full service salon with a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere, including complimentary champagne, wine, beer or coffee during your appointment, has made it the perfect choice for wedding parties to be pampered. “We already have seven weddings booked for this summer and expect many more,” said Hess. Many women who are seeking a day out with friends have also booked a day of pampering at Stylebar Beauty Bar. The salon is located in downtown across from Starbucks in the building previously occupied by Pat Story who owned Sandpoint Salon. Hess was approached with the opportunity to purchase the building; an offer she could not pass up. With the help of her beau, painting contractor Marc Merli, she was able to completely renovate the building transforming it into the beauty retreat it is today. v In addition to the Sandpoint location, Hess also owns Stylebar – A Blow Dry Bar in Coeur d’Alene. Opened in June 2014, the Coeur d’Alene location is the first exclusive blow dry bar in North

Idaho. “I have a lot of clients who come up here from Coeur d’Alene and stop in after a day at Schweitzer for a wash and blow dry,” said Hess. “I also have a lot of clients in Coeur d’Alene who are from Sandpoint.” Stylebar carries products including Kevin Murphy, Lavish Tan “Organic” Spray tan, Milk Shake and Cinderella and Halo Coutour hair extensions. To complete your look, they also offer a selection of jewelry and hair accessories. With a fully interactive website, clients can book their appointment directly online. Soon they will be making a Stylebar app available for both Android and IOS operating systems so you can book your appointment on the go!

THE MONTH 208.946.4330 DR. JOSEPH JOHNSON, DMD HWY 200 IN PONDERAY, NEXT TO THE ELKS GOLF COURSE
FOR MANY HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES, graduation from high school marks the end of participating in an organized sport – something many of them have been doing since they were in kindergarten. The athletes work hard, many in multiple sports, and train throughout the year to be the best they can be. Many say that participating in athletics was the highlight of their high school years and they will miss the camaraderie. But for many of this year’s Sandpoint High School seniors, they will pursue not only an education beyond high school but will continue to compete in their chosen sport – something many of them never thought possible. This year, Sandpoint High School has several athletes who have committed to different schools to play at the next level. In girl’s soccer, coach Conor Baranski said

there are two seniors, Riley Couch and Ashly Busch, who will play for Spokane Falls Community College in the fall. Other female athletes who have committed to a school include basketball player Madi Schoening who will play for the University of Montana. Madi has been instrumental in the success of the Sandpoint High School girls’ basketball team over the last four years. When it comes to Sandpoint High School football players, a record nine players have committed to or have offers from schools for next year. “If you go back to 1996, we had six guys who went on to play college ball and one who went on to become an Olympian (Nate Holland),” said Coach Satini Puailoa. “We also had six guys in 1997 and in 2003.”

The following players have signed on or committed to play at the collegiate level from this year’s team, a team that took second in state: Colton Engle (College of Idaho), Michael Plaster (College of Idaho), Logan Magro (College of Idaho), Carlos Collado (University of Idaho), Kyle Perry (University of Idaho) Paul Sundquist (Montana Tech), and Jake Timothy (Ashland University). According to Coach Puailoa, quarterback Davan Norris currently has three offers on the table but has yet to decide. Also, Sam Johnson has toured several schools and is currently deciding between Whitworth and Carroll College. “We had about 15 colleges on our campus recruiting these kids,” said Puailoa. “And everyone that has committed so far has been happy with their decision.”
The boys’ soccer team also has athletes who will continue to play at the college level next year. According to coach Adam Tajan, Mahonri Hunsaker is hoping to continue his soccer career at North Idaho College where he plans to walk on. “Kyle Hertel has had interest from several schools and is planning to play,” said Tajan of his senior goalie. “At this point he has still not made any official commitments.” While it is hard work and dedication that blessed many of these athletes with the chance to advance to the next level, it is also the commitment and encouragement they receive from their coaches that has played a large part. A heartfelt congratulations to all these seniors and a thank you to the coaches for the influential role you play in so many of the young athletes’ lives.

The Ease of Crossing What you need to know for a smooth crossing into Canada
MANY STORIES DRIFT through the network of human relationships and social media both good and bad regarding vehicular crossings into Canada or for that matter any Port of Entry where driving or riding across in a vehicle is the means. The Panhandle has two such border crossings into Canada: Eastport which operates round the clock all year long and Port Hill (Kingsgate on the Canadian side) open seven days a week between 7am and 11pm only. The stories are mostly good, no problem; but some are negative, expressing a wear on nerves or frustrations of untimely or ill-thought encounters. I visited Port Director, Jeffrey Lisius, at East Port recently to clarify what one should know for a smoother border crossing without undue hassle. There is a Difference Just to clarify, the good folks working the Ports of Entry are not Border Patrol agents. They are U.S. Customs and Border Protection personnel. Both agencies work for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, but their responsibilities are not the same. Border Patrol monitors, observes and handles illegal crossings outside the Ports of Entry, to be clear: these would be people who for one reason or another try to circumvent customs. They may be carrying contraband, drugs or anything illegal on foot, by ATV, or in a boat, on horseback or by air. They may be individuals trying to slip across the border to avoid arrest or for some other ill-intended reason want to avoid detection. Not a good idea. This article is not for them; this is for the general, law-abiding public who just wants to go in and come back

out on a business trip, for a visit, a vacation or a weekend experience. To Take or Not to Take Crossing the border should pose no real problem nor give rise to any undue stress or concern. Just know what you can do, what you can carry and how you should respond when border personnel ask questions. It’s that simple. Don’t try to hide anything; it’s not a game. Likewise, look over everything you are carrying in your vehicle when you intend to cross over. Don’t carry anything you don’t plan on using or need, including people you don’t know.
With a little digging, you can gain accurate understanding by looking through all related points and tabs on the Ports of Entry website: www.cbp.gov/contact/ports/id. The “id” is for Idaho. If you want to know another state’s ports, just slip the appropriate abbreviation into that slot. Here’s another site where you can find rather thorough explanations of dos and don’ts:
www.ezbordercrossing.com/. But for facts and/ or solutions posed on any privately run site, including that of Sandpoint Living Local or any other media outlet where this information is presented, you are better off getting it straight from the horse’s mouth. For that, go to the government’s website. The Basics You are better off having a passport, complete with all the current information about where you reside, who you are, and so forth. Visit your post office for that and allow a little time in the processing. Your spouse and your kids, anyone in your family should have one. If you are carrying passengers or especially children of another family, be sure they are clearly documented as to who
they are, why they are with you, where you are taking them as well as where and when you expect to return to the United States. Answer every question truthfully. You can trust that border personnel on both sides of the border share databases containing just about everything known about you. Yup! Don’t try to cover up. Get caught lying and you’re likely going to be turned back or charged with a crime. And because those databases keep a

record of each time you cross the border and are turned back, a lie will make it tougher to cross on another occasion, if not impossible. This applies to minors as well. If you or one of your passengers has a pending warrant, is in a criminal trial or otherwise carrying any record of a criminal conviction, you will want to check out current border regulations BEFORE you get to the checkpoint. And be thorough. EasyBorderCrossing.com has adequate information for you under “Prior Criminal Offenses.” This is hard for some folks, but be courteous. The person addressing you has the responsibility to observe rightly who you are and what your intentions might be. Courtesy is a good thing. The Golden Rule applies. Sarcastic remarks and/or political comments thrown off the cuff can significantly delay your time in front of a
port official. It’s not the time or the place to exhibit a privately held bias or testy attitude. Always answer only the questions you are asked. It’s not the place to be witty. Remember, the person in front of you has a responsibility to safeguard other citizens. Don’t test them. Just be clear and answer what you are asked as truthfully as you can. Give them reason to suspect something and they can ask as many questions as they want to ask. Just be forthright. Remove sunglasses so they can see your eyes.

CALLIGRAPHY
M
y grandson likes to play Santa and give family members their presents from under the Christmas tree, but the names on the gift tags must be written in print. Why? Because he can’t read cursive; schools no longer teach it. And penmanship is passé. Handwriting is exiting into obsolescence, replaced by the keyboard. So surely calligraphy – the ancient art developed by scribes and named from the Greek words ”kalos”
(beautiful) and “graphos” (writing or drawing) — has long since been culturally entombed, hasn’t it? I am admittedly pleased to say the answer is “no.” Yes, calligraphic fonts are common and graphic artists produce similar effects. And yet, the by-hand art of calligraphy flows unobtrusively alongside the incoming tide of the computer age. How does it manage to survive? It is still the most elegant, eloquent way to commemorate and celebrate, acknowledge and honor, love and adore, and express insights and inspirations. It often includes “illumination,” where a glow is imparted to the page with bright colors and burnished gold applied with special pens and brushes. And because it is, in essence, literature as art, the element of a soul channeled through human hands renders it immune to

death by technology. Calligraphy is alive and flourishing! Lanie Johnson, an artist and calligrapher for 40 years, speaks of the unique creative process involved as we tour her work on exhibit. Her original poetry plus other poems, essays, quotations and inspirations are expressed in “calligraphic imagery,” which means words made into pictures, and brings writing into the realm of interpretative design and emotional expression. One method is to change the color of the letters to form an image. Other more complex artwork incorporates calligraphy into a painting with an intriguing layering technique. She lovingly unzips a travel-battered leather portfolio and reveals samples of a life’s work in scripted creativity. As she pages through commissioned personal works, menus, awards, diplomas and certificates, announcements and wedding invitations, she muses about the essence of handmade calligraphy. “The lettering is nuanced,” she observes, noting how the type of pen and the interaction of ink and paper create a distinct originality born in the moment of writing. “So much of it is a concept
IVE EAT CR from the artist’s inner self. Any (time an) artist is sharing their thought process and their feelings; it comes from them personally, and it’s not an automated thing you can get with just the push of a button.” She notes that, “The designs, artwork and illustrations are original. Each one is unique. That’s one thing I think people like, the fact that their invitation or menu is theirs alone – no one else will have one like it.” “It can’t be duplicated mechanically,” she concludes. “You do so many things spontaneously in the process of making a piece. It’s the difference of doing things by hand,” she finishes simply, expressing an element that escapes definition and yet is evident at a glance. “Things done by hand belong in a different
world than things done on a machine,” says Johnson. And yet the graceful effects of what is called “the dancing pen” endure even in our font-happy world. As one who carries on the tradition, who once taught it at the library along with calligraphers and artists Marita McDonough and Mike Franklin, who blends it as a key ingredient into her art, Johnson knows that calligraphy is handwritten chivalry, if you will. We cannot and do not want it to disappear. In fact, we treasure it as a lovely way to formalize, commemorate and add romance to important occasions and communications. The dancing pen choreographs the moments of our life… still. SEWING Coming in from the cold to the warmth of seamstress Robin Jelinek’s business, Sew I So,

I was greeted with the jingle of bells on the door handle, smiles from her assistants, and the happy clutter of a very busy sewing shop. It occurred to me that Jelinek’s business is always busy. My next thought was that in these days of buying new things when old things wear out, how could the arts of the seamstress still be in demand? I remembered seventh grade when boys were required to take wood and metal shop, while girls took Home Economics – a class in cooking and sewing. We made cookies, a skirt and a gym bag. My gym bag looked more like a skirt. Others did well and in fact saved money by making their own school clothes. With the rising cost of material plus mass production of lower-priced clothing, the only people who sew now are those who simply enjoy it. And yet – Jelinek and her staff are busy year-round. Why?
ELE GA NT
aR ti S TIC The wow factor. Once people discover the many benefits of tailoring, it changes everything! One 24-year-old summer firefighter had a slightly heavier friend who admired his jacket, tried it on, zipped it right up, and it fit him perfectly! How could that be? Well, the jacket could expand accommodatingly. So the young man brought it to Jelinek who tailored it for his particular build – broad shoulders, narrow hips – and he was amazed at the “Dude!” difference. Women discover when jeans fit in the hips they tend to gap in the waist, until Jelinek tailors the waistband to fit. Their first turn-around in front of a mirror makes them customers for life. “Clothes are manufactured for a medium body type and according to generalized styling, but we are born quite individualistically,” explains Jelinek. “So whether it’s shortening,
lengthening, taking them in or letting them out, putting in darts – it’s the reshaping that makes the critical difference in how you look and feel. People like to have things made to look like they were custom-crafted for them.” Old favorites. Anyone who has tried to discreetly discard a man’s favorite tattered t-shirt or battered jacket will rejoice in Jelinek’s skill at preserving, transforming and saving treasured older garments. And men are not the only clothing-clingers. Women often bring in a much-loved, well-worn pair of jeans that has finally developed a rip, and Jelinek saves the day by making unnoticeable repairs. “People come in with their favorite shirts, pants, and a jacket that is ripped or worn somehow and ask if I can ‘save it.’” Their phrasing reveals how our emotional attachments can outlast seams and fabric. And the answer is yes, she usually can.

“They get to keep the favorite item they were going to have to throw away,” she smiles. In reparation, her skills as a designer – and sometimes as an engineer – come into play. She studies the garment and the challenge, and “figures out ways of repairing and patching so it’s not noticeable.” Her solutions are often ingenious and sometimes involve dissecting the garment and recreating it in ways that camouflage the repair. But worth it. Expensive items are often preserved by Jelinek’s discreet skills. Leather presents its own unique repair challenges. “When someone brings an expensive leather garment to a leather expert, they will sometimes be told it can’t be fixed, which is true, in the standard way,” admits Jelinek. However! “I find a method to repair it in a minimalist way so you
can still wear it, even though technically, it’s not reparable.” She recalls a client with a beautiful leather coat that had a small rip in the sleeve. “I opened it up and with double-stick leather tape and a pack patch glued in place, a three hundred dollar coat was saved.”
luxurious, but can be put to good everyday use. “One pilot had the ugly synthetic fur removed from his jacket and real fur added – much more effective against the cold when flying – and a tanned animal hide with fur on it became a custom flight jacket!”
Many people have old furs and according to Jelinek, “There’s no reason to let those furs languish. We can change them into fur collars, hats and cuffs so they don’t go to waste.” She can do the same with legally attained furs that aren’t
Transforming the everyday. Sometimes reshaping the neckline enhances a top in just the right way. Do you love t-shirts but prefer a more feminine neckline to the crewneck? Wish a turtleneck could be a V-neck? No problem.
SandpointLivingLocal.com

Another frequent challenge is the repair of men’s work clothes, according to Jelinek. Zippidy-do-dah. Life is perilous for zippers. The zipper sticks or breaks. You wash the item with the zipper and waist open, and the machine damages it. It gets caught in something. Winters always result in lots of coats being brought in for zipper repair. “People think they have to be replaced, but that’s not always true,” explains Jelinek. “They can often be repaired.”

The ups and downs. And of course, there is the weight loss and gain factor. When in weight transition, tailoring changes can accommodate the process instead of buying new clothes every ten pounds. Medical modifications. “When people are wheelchair-bound, sometimes their clothes bunch up in their lap and get squished,” says Jelinek. She can fix that. She has modified pants to accommodate a catheter. She created a specialized cape so a client with Parkinson’s disease could be warmly wrapped in cold weather and more easily transferred into and out of a car. “The wrap didn’t catch on things,” explains Jelinek. Sporting chance. Jelinek created a custom spray skirt for a kayaker and did custom modifications to a pair of pants to make them convenient during a lengthy endurance race. Join the club. There is a trick or two to sewing on custom patches for jacket insignias so they “look right and hang properly.” Memory lane. When treasured clothing items have been in a big box for years or are taking up space in drawers or closets, people can have the important portion incorporated into memory pillows so they don’t have to keep the entire garment. “They can also have a quilt made from a collection of favorite t-shirts, for instance, perhaps preserving the logo or the titles from sporting events.” Home décor. Slip covers can change the look of your furniture in a moment, and are far more economical than reupholstering. “I made a reversible one – quite a trick – in very expensive fabric that was two different colors so she could change the colors depending on the seasons.” As a seamstress, Jelinek is also something of an engineer, a designer and a magician. Her admirably modest conclusion is, “I figure out how to make it work – and look good.” And as long as the rest of us can’t quite do that, the art of the seamstress will not only survive, it will thrive.

Ski for a Cause 24 HOURS OF SCHWEITZER IS UPON US BY MELODY VANHORN
CYSTINOSIS. A RARE metabolic disease that is named for the way amino acids, cystine, starts to accumulate and build up in the body’s cells which can slowly destroy various organs including the kidneys, liver, muscles, white blood cells, eyes and central nervous system. It is such a rare genetic disease that it only affects approximately 500 people in the United States most of which are children. One of these children is Hank. Hank Sturgis was only 16 months old when he was diagnosed in November of 2007. Because cystinosis is such a rare disease it has not been adopted by the pharmaceutical industry and research money is scarce to nonexistent. Since 2008 Hank’s family has been working hard to help raise funds to further research on this debilitating disease with the hope of finding a cure, sooner rather than later. One of their fundraising efforts, “24 hours of Schweitzer,” has now grown to become an annual event that has helped bring in a large amount of needed research money.
Celebrating its eighth year, “24 Hours of Schweitzer” is a 24-hour downhill endurance ski event that begins the morning of Friday, March 25 and goes a full 24 hours into the morning of Saturday, March 26. This all day and night fundraiser is a team relay for skiers, telemark skiers and snowboarders with options for all ability levels. Participants may enter singularly or in teams of up to four with each member paying an individual registration fee along with a $100 pledge amount. Each team will decide how many runs each person takes as they work to accumulate points, prizes and most importantly money to help further research for cystinosis. Following a hard day on the slopes there will be a delicious dinner served at the lodge on Saturday evening along with an awards party and both a silent and live auction. Teams can take part in either an endurance category or a challenge category. The challenge category offers a unique and fun challenge every hour. With two divisions in this category:

Black Diamond where all challenges are timed or scored and Blue Square where points are awarded for completion, teams can accumulate various amounts of points as they cover the entire resort. Complete all 24 challenges and you will be able to earn bonus points for your team! This year’s theme is Rock around the Clock. There will be an eclectic mix of bands, DJs and solo artists playing around the clock in the Village along with some time set aside for you to show off your vocal skills during open mic and karaoke. Here’s your chance to help! Get out there and gather together a team of your friends to come play on the mountain all night long as you work towards an amazing goal and help increase awareness about cystinosis. THE HUNT IS ON... For Easter eggs that is! By Melody Vanhorn
The Easter Bunny is coming a day early this year for the annual Easter Egg Hunt in Lakeview Park! Hosted by the Sandpoint Lions Club, children are invited to meet at the Lion’s Den, 607 S. Ella, on March 26 for a fun adventure across the park as they search for an assortment of beautifully colored eggs. Amongst the brightly colored eggs a lovely golden egg can be found. Find this egg for a chance to win a golden prize! Children will hippity hop around the den and close to the Bonner County Museum on the west side of Memorial Field in a scramble to see how many eggs they can find. Members of the Lions Club will have the area set up to accommodate different age groups so that the older children aren’t stepping on the little ones. Also, they are asking parents to please stay outside the boundaries to help avoid added congestion. The event will start at 10am sharp and the search goes rather fast so be sure to get there early so your little one has a chance to join the chase!

ow did we get here so fast? It doesn’t seem long ago that a mobile phone was simply one that didn’t have a cord attached to the wall, you set your schedule around the day and time your favorite TV show was on, and term paper research was done in the pages of a book inside a library. Today, everything we would ever want to know or see is at our fingertips, and through DVRs and on-demand services, we dictate when to watch our favorite shows. Initially, most people thought taking a phone call in a group of people was rude, but now when we get together our phones are out on the table and often used as an interactive piece, showing a video, photos of our family, answering a question or settling a debate. Just as with the appearance of the printing press, daily newspaper, radio broadcast and color television, leading companies see the Internet as a vital platform to reach their consumers and get their message into the home. Digital marketing is the latest trend in branding to the masses, and the options online continue to evolve and grow. So what is it and how does a business get started? Let’s start with a few definitions. First, what exactly is digital marketing and what is not considered digital marketing? Traditional print, billboards, TV, and radio do not fall into the digital definition because these mediums do not provide instant data on exactly how many impressions your ad created. It’s not to say these mediums are not effective marketing
While digital marketing is an emerging and extremely important marketing tool, it should also coincide with other forms of media marketing. Fortune 500 retailers are taking full advantage of digital products but are still forking over tens of millions in commercials, billboards, sponsorships and print ads. All major companies know that putting all your eggs into one type of media is not an effective approach, and spreading your message over a multitude of mediums is the best way to build and maintain brand awareness. At Living Local 360, we are doing the same. We take your branding into multiple platforms including print,

social, web, search engines and email. A well-rounded marketing plan should include all these avenues as your company works toward top-of-mind awareness. Each impression your company makes is another reminder to the consumer. So when the time comes that they need your product or service, your business instantly comes to mind. You might not have tens of millions to market your small business, but no matter your budget, it goes further with Living Local 360 and the multi-media platform we offer. We are educators and are happy to help guide you through the ever-changing marketing landscape. Drop us a line anytime. Info@livinglocal360.com.
This is called top-of-mind awareness and is the ultimate goal for any company of any size. The short of it is that digital marketing is a term used for a group of interactive products that target specific audiences using measurable digital technologies.
TECHNOLOGY THE SHORT OF IT IS THAT DIGITAL MARKETING IS A TERM USED FOR A GROUP OF INTERACTIVE PRODUCTS THAT TARGET SPECIFIC AUDIENCES USING MEASURABLE DIGITAL TECHNOLOGIES. platforms; it is just more difficult to track the number of direct respondents from the ad and exactly how many people saw it. Some consumers will respond to a call to action (coupon, specific offer), but ask yourself an honest question – when was the last time you walked into a business and told the person at the counter the reason you are in their store was because you saw their ad on page seven of the newspaper, heard their radio spot at 3:45 this afternoon, or saw their commercial on the morning news? It happens, but not all consumers are going to share this information and it was probably the combination of seeing multiple ads in multiple platforms that ultimately lead them to the storefront.

Some of these technologies include social media marketing which places display ads and content inside Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other platforms as a way to connect directly with consumers who have shown interest in your products. Utilizing hashtags like “#McDonaldsbreakfast” allows companies to directly reach out to people who enjoy their goods or services, and also allows them to monitor real-time feedback from consumers. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and website ranking allows businesses to be listed in a general web search. This can be done both by a paid service and organically, the latter being much more difficult. If you want to be the first business listed on a Google search of “Used furniture Seattle,” the search engine will guarantee your spot for a price. The more the search term is used and the broader it is, the higher the price. “Used furniture Seattle” will cost you much more than “Used Sealy Queen Mattress Seattle.” Hiring a professional SEO company will also help with your rankings as a good company stays on top of the algorithms each search engine uses to rank sites for relevance. Getting your company exposure organically is difficult but can be accomplished with some devotion. Search engines used to be keyword-focused, meaning the number of times “Used furniture Seattle” appeared on your site would determine your page rank. Today, the ranking system is based on the frequency of updates
LEFT Today, the ranking system is based on the frequency of updates to the site and if it optimized for mobile phones.

to the site and if it is optimized for mobile phones. This is why when searching for a small business website, you will often see that business’s Facebook page ranked above their homepage. This is often because they are far more active on their social media sites and perhaps have not updated their business webpage in months or sometimes years. Businesses can tie social media feeds into their homepage, update photos and include blogs or articles and various other content which will all help increase the ranking organically. Email marketing is a way to reach a large number of consumers with the same message without the costs of printing and postage in traditional direct mail marketing. Traditional direct mail allows you to choose specific postal routes that have a general income level
PROGRESSIVE and household demographics, but email marketing can get much more specific. The platform that Living Local 360 utilizes gives us access to over 90 million email addresses. We then break these down into the city or area the client wants to target. From there we can narrow the field even further based on income level, gender, size of family, interests, college education level and many more categories. Data from an email campaign will show you exactly how many inboxes the message was delivered to, how many opened the email, and how many interacted with an offer inside the email. This gives you a real-time cost analysis on what it costs

of news content followed by twelve minutes of commercials, would you pay any attention to that or would you change the channel? The same applies to radio. Stations need to make money through advertisers, but they also need consumers to consume the media around which the advertisers have spent their money. With all the new opportunities seemingly appearing every month with digital, it will be easy for companies to over saturate and frustrate potential customers. But as with other mediums, digital will eventually balance out the right amount of ads per experience.

per impression (person seeing your message) and lead (person accepting your offer or showing interest). These platforms also contain physical addresses so you can narrow down direct mail follow-up pieces and send those only to consumers who have shown interest in your product, saving you money and knowing you are targeting only warm and hot leads. A more recent trend that you’ve probably noticed is retargeted IP (Internet Protocol) advertising. For example, you go to Amazon. com to look for a new digital camera. You leave the site without purchasing an item and go next to CNN.com or ESPN.com and low and behold, there’s a side banner ad with the products you were just looking at. This is also common on social media sites if you have been discussing products through posts. Retailers are able to follow your web visit history using your IP address. New websites are now formatted with a blank ad space that companies can purchase and use the information they have gathered on your interests and retarget an ad tailored specifically to your search. This will become more and more popular with small businesses as they will be able to effectively buy space on some of the most popular national websites without having to fork over a huge amount of money to the site itself and reach consumers not in your target area.
THE PLATFORM THAT LIVING LOCAL 360 UTILIZES GIVES US ACCESS TO OVER 90 MILLION EMAIL ADDRESSES. WE THEN BREAK THESE DOWN INTO THE CITY OR AREA THE CLIENT WANTS TO TARGET.
Much like other mediums, there is a balance between reaching your consumer effectively and overwhelming them with ads to the point of discontent with your brand. If you sat down to watch the evening news and got five minutes

One unique way to accomplish this is through digital content marketing. Digital content marketing starts with really rich content that people actually care about – including killer images. Then it’s delivering that content when and where your customers want it in hopes they like it and tell all their friends and followers. Building trust in your brand is key to growth, and a referral of your product or service from a trusted friend or family member is the golden ticket of marketing. Making sure readers can see the article on a device that they use every day, especially the one attached to their hip, is vital. But above all, don’t overwhelm people with your sales pitch. Keep it simple and teach them something so they consider you a valuable resource not just a company pushing product. The unique thing about marketing through digital channels is that it goes way beyond messaging. Given all the ways brands can connect with consumers online, whether in

Reaching customers on the devices that are in front of their face from the time their alarm goes off in the morning to the last status updated before bed is paramount in staying competitive in the digital age. social environments, via mobile apps, paid media or blogs, each interaction leaves an impression of your brand. So in many respects, going digital is marketing. So how does one get started in the digital world? If you have a homepage for your business, you’ve already started. If you don’t, it’s really about time! Typically local business websites don’t have to go into great length. Your company’s contact information and location, a little background on the company, and the products and services you offer give people what they need to know. Your professional website gives an impression that you are a legitimate business. Many consumers, including middle-aged men and women, are interacting more and more with social media. Have your page include fun content, “friends only” offers, events you’re hosting, sales, or partnerships with the community you
support. Again, the frequency of posting will help your social media sites and feeds remain relevant; stagnant pages will disappear from most consumers’ news feeds. Most businesses can handle these platforms without being overwhelmed, but if you’re ready to take the next step in reaching your digital audience it’s best to seek out a professional company whose expertise is in this field. You wouldn’t have your plumber fix your computer and the same applies to your marketing efforts – find an expert you can trust. Digital marketing is another platform to get your brand and message in front of your audience. The great advantages to digital is the ability to track exactly how many times that message is being seen and make adjustments to not only where the message is seen but perhaps the message itself. Your digital ad might not be performing as you had hoped, but if you make

the change from a 1-800 number to a local number on the ad, you will be able to track and see if it’s the message that needed changing, not the medium. We are tied to our phones and tablets, and it doesn’t look like that will be ending anytime soon. Reaching customers on the devices that are in front of their face from the time their alarm goes off in the morning to the last status updated before bed is paramount in staying competitive in the digital age. Savvy marketers are already looking for what’s coming next. Nothing will remain as it is as technology continues to expand. The digital world is here and your consumer is living in it all day. Time to go say hello!

Spruce Up Your Spring Look ACCESSORIZE AND COLOR COORDINATE

SPRING IS JUST AROUND the corner, and it is time to start thinking about putting away your heavier sweaters, coats and winter scarves. It is much easier to transition by having these items out of your main closet. Each season simply take a huge plastic tub and fold these items away to lighten your closet. This is also a great time to purge. Consider each item carefully – some pieces are great crossover items for the cool evenings, but some are just too heavy to keep in your spring and summer collections. Any items not worn last season should be donated. The chances of wearing those items next year are slim. All denim, leggings, lighter weight jackets and sweaters can be kept in your spring and summer closet.
Be sure to include a pair of capri leggings that complement sundresses, long tees and tunics.
Now consider what you may be missing that will bring your look up-to-date. Be sure to look at shoe trends and add a few new pairs – perhaps a new pair of brightly colored Nikes to inspire your workout, or a pair of sparkly flip-flops or tall wedges that elongate legs but are still comfortable and easy to walk in. Next look at your basics – are your leggings looking tired and faded? If so, toss them and add a few new pairs. Be sure to include a pair

of capri leggings that complement sundresses, long tees and tunics. Tees by Tina are our favorite basics and will pair nicely with any of your layering pieces. Choose a signature color for all of your accessories. This keeps your look consistent and makes packing for trips a snap! Choose a coral or other bright color for a sun-kissed look, or make your signature hue your eye color so that your eyes really stand out. Next choose your signature handbag for the season. Perhaps last year’s will work, but you may want to choose something on-trend to create that fresh and fun look! Fashion magazines are showing woven and basket handbags as summer’s bag of choice. Now is also the perfect time to visit a local makeup artist to freshen up your makeup routine. Techniques, colors and quality change rapidly in the cosmetic market, so consider an update each spring and fall. Happy Spring! HEALTH & LIFESTYLE
Step One
YOU DON’T NEED TO GET IN SHAPE TO GET IN SHAPE
BY SUSAN MOORE, BETTER GYM, GIG HARBOR
SO HERE WE ARE at that time of the year again. The interim space after the failed New Year’s resolution of getting healthy and the planning of bathing suit season. You feel like you still have time to NOT start your exercise and diet regime with enough chronological wiggle room to lose a few pounds before it gets warmer outside. Maybe you’ll start going to the gym, but only after you figure out how to get into enough shape to not embarrass yourself at the gym. And there continues the cycle of failure. Why do people think they should get into shape to get into shape? This makes no rational sense, yet I hear it close to every day. This is

the opposite of a good idea my dear friends. Not having adequate strength and endurance is not a productive reason to put off a training program. Who’s to say what level you should be at to begin? You go to a training program to GAIN strength, endurance, mobility, and stability; not to show how much you already have. Going to a fitness class isn’t about the physical caliber of the people around you; it’s about supporting those people in their goals and them supporting you in yours. Most of the time I am fixing poor movement patterns on people, I’m not putting them on display to prove anything, ever. I am looking for your progress, not perfection.

The intimidation people feel towards group training is unfortunate. I love seeing the camaraderie of perfect strangers when they are in a physically challenging environment. If you feel like you are in a competition you didn’t sign up for and you just want to get healthy and feel great about yourself, then that’s exactly what you should look for. I believe that competition has no place in a training environment. That’s not to say we can’t work for specific strength goals to later put to the test in a fun and family style competition, but the daily practice of strength is no place for competition. You should never feel like you failed a workout. A workout or training session is about moving your body through space in all ranges of motion, on all planes, both loaded and unloaded. You need to figure out if you have any dysfunctional movement patterns. If so, address them and then begin to add complexity and load to these movements. There is nothing like the feeling of getting both mentally and physically stronger and more fit. When you walk into a fitness center, studio or gym, you should feel welcome, not like an outsider. Go to the gym to create your goals with a qualified professional or instructor. It should not hurt to go to the gym. Find a
program where you can lift heavy to prevent injury instead of inducing it. Where you can test your limits without testing your good sense. Make sure if you have questions, you ask them. If something doesn’t feel right, speak up. As health, strength and fitness professionals, we work for you, the client. It is our job to make sure you move towards and hopefully accomplish YOUR goals – not put you into a workout that is one size fits all. Chances are, you will feel like the exception of that one size. Make sure that whatever you decide to do, you believe in it! There are many reasons to start a fitness program. You want to lose weight, you want to get stronger, you want to feel better, you want to look better, you might be depressed, lonely or tired. The reasons are endless. Don’t be afraid to start, be afraid not to. In order for your life to change, you have to change your life. Don’t wait for a feeling, an opportunity or a sign. This is the time to jump. No more waiting or conditional excuses. All of us have different goals, genes, body types, limitations, tastes and dislikes. There is no cookie cutter mold that works for everyone, but everyone has the ability to realize their undeniable potential. Results or excuses – you decide!

Get Up and Move BE AWARE OF THE DANGERS OF SITTING ON THE JOB BY RYANNE LEMON, PTA, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY MUCH RESEARCH has been done recently recognizing the dangers of sitting too much. According to ACE Fitness Journal, lack of activity during the day can lead to many adverse health conditions including (but not limited to): type 2 diabetes, hypertension, some forms of cancer, weight gain and even premature death. Standing up at work does little to decrease effects, and even exercising after work does not eliminate the health risks caused by too much sitting. Research has shown that small workouts done during the day at work not only help with avoiding health problems, but aid in happiness, mental clarity, creativity and productivity, and has even been linked to higher pay. Many workers do not participate in physical activity during the day simply because there is a perceived lack of time, or, in some cases, weather and lack of a proper exercise facility deter workers from getting out and exercising during lunch break. Research has shown that the duration and type of exercise done during the workday are not as important as the frequency of the exercises. In other words, taking a few minutes each hour to participate in a short burst of activity can have long lasting effects for productivity during the work day and for overall health. In the ACE February issue of its fitness journal, there are ideas for brief circuit training at the desk. Workout #1: Full-Body Strength To be performed approximately five minutes every 60 to 90 minutes while at work. Set timer 5 minutes and cycle through 5 to 15 repetitions of each set until time runs out.
flexed 90 degrees and press back up. Hip bridges - Lie on the floor face up and knees bent to 45 degrees, feet flat on floor. Drive hips toward ceiling until there is straight line from knees to shoulders.
Your Goals Are Our Priority!
Dips - Seated in chair with arms on arm rest, slowly push up until hips are elevated out of chair. Workout #2: Cardio To be performed approximately four minutes each hour. Exercises done in circuitstyle format, performing each exercise approximately 20 seconds. Cycle through exercise set until time runs out.
Sandpoint’s Only Full Size Warm Water Therapy Pool
High knee march - March in place. Plank knee tuck - Starting in push up position, bring one knee to either same side elbow or opposite side elbow. Repeat with opposite leg. Side-Step toe touch - Step out to the right side and reach down to touch right foot (or knee, depending on mobility) with left hand making sure to bend at knee and hip. Repeat with other leg. Standing hamstring curl - From standing, bend knee and bring foot toward same side glute. Return foot to floor and repeat with opposite leg. These are just samples of the many variations of exercises that can be done at work or during any long durations of sitting when time is a factor. Watching the clock and making sure to get up and move on a regular basis can have great pay-offs in the long run.

Fueling Your Fitness MAXIMIZE YOUR TRAINING
BY DARCI BARMAN, MSN, RDN, LD
SPRING IS IN THE AIR, and for many that means training for this summer’s races. Whether it’s a 5K, half or full marathon, sprint triathlon or the Ironman, athletes need nutrients to fuel their fitness. Typically, when we think of sports nutrition, we think about the proper balance of macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates and fat). These nutrients are the athlete’s foundation for fuel – supplying energy, amino and fatty acids to optimize muscle, nerve, brain and energy function. Without proteins, carbohydrates and fats, the athlete can simply not function – it’s like a car that has run out of gas. On the flip side, even a car with gas is not always a highly functioning vehicle. That’s where micronutrients come in. It’s easy to think of them like the accessories to your fitness “vehicle” – the windshield wipers, the radio, the steering wheel. An athlete without proper micronutrient balance will struggle to run smoothly (no pun intended). Regardless of type, duration and intensity of training, the body demands more micronutrients when we are active. Minerals are lost in sweat; antioxidants are rapidly consumed to protect the body against oxidative stress and B-vitamins are depleted through revved up energy pathways. Without adequate micronutrient cofactors, you may see plateaued weight loss, quicker muscle fatigue, slower race times, decreased power and overall lower performance. Minimizing Oxidative Stress Physical activity, even for weekend warriors, generates oxidative stress. Maximizing antioxidant potential is key. Colorful fruits, vegetables, beans and legumes are the preferred source of antioxidants from the diet. Athletes
SandpointLivingLocal.com

should consume three to five cups of multicolored fruits and vegetables daily, aiming for at least two cups of dark leafy vegetables per day. The wider the variety and color spectrum, the more antioxidants. Studies have found that antioxidants not only protect the athlete from oxidative stress but positively influence mineral metabolism. Men who took 300mg of vitamin E daily maintained higher levels of chromium, manganese, copper, zinc and calcium after training than a similar but unsupplemented group. Other antioxidants that may prevent damage to the cells are vitamin C and cysteine. Immunity and Bone Health Glutamine is a general indicator of overall immune status. It is synthesized in skeletal muscle and moderate exercise is associated with improved glutamine function. However, exhaustive training programs induce glutamine deficiency, resulting in decreased immunity. Weight-bearing exercise and adequate vitamin D promotes bone growth, and research has revealed vitamin D plays a major role in immunity. Healthy vitamin D status is essential for athletes and all those atrisk for osteoporosis (postmenopausal, white females especially). In North Idaho where the sun does not always grace us with its presence, 2,000iu of vitamin D is an appropriate “winter maintenance” dose. Cellular Energy Inside every cell in our body there is an “energy powerhouse” known as the mitochondria. Its primary function is to generate energy. The more exercise you endure, the more “powerhouses” your cells develop and the more energy (and micronutrient cofactors)
you need to fuel those powerhouses. Nutrients like carnitine, lipoic acid and coenzyme Q10 are critical cofactors specific to mitochondrial function while many B-vitamins – biotin, B1, B2, B3 and B6 – directly impact energy pathways in the mitochondria. Vitamin E protects our energy “currency,” ATP, while vitamin A maintains cellular equilibrium when energy production ramps up. Bonus: when there are adequate cofactors to fuel our mitochondria, like vitamin C and carnitine, there is less muscle soreness and tissue damage from by-products that have “backed-up” in the muscle tissue.
Colorful fruits, vegetables, beans and legumes are the preferred source of antioxidants from the diet. Athletes should consume three to five cups of multi-colored fruits and vegetables daily, aiming for at least two cups of dark leafy vegetables per day. Individualized Nutrition Micronutrients work synergistically, the status of one affects the function of another, so it is not recommended to simply supplement the above-mentioned nutrients without proper medical supervision. Those most suited to make supplementation recommendations are physicians, naturopaths, dietitians and physical therapists or chiropractors who work specifically with the athlete population. They’re Not Just For Summer A DELICIOUS AND WARM PEAR SALAD
A colorful mix of seasonal ingredients can keep you going strong until springtime.
THE CHILLY MONTHS can take a toll on our mental and physical health, but a colorful mix of seasonal ingredients can keep you going strong until springtime. Honey sweet roasted pears and tangy balsamic lentils are tossed with winter greens to make this simple and balanced meal, packed full of essential nutrients, including fiber, vitamin C, antioxidants, folate and iron. “Combining the refreshing flavors of fruits and vegetables, this satisfying salad is soulwarming comfort food at its best,” says Kathy Stephenson, marketing communications director for USA Pears. “Roasted pears on a bed of greens with lentils capture the lively promise of springtime and the nourishment our bodies crave this time of year.” Serve salad warm. If you desire a little more richness, try topping the salad with long curls of parmesan cheese. Warm Winter Greens with Balsamic Lentils and Roasted Pears Ingredients: • 2 bunches of winter greens, washed, dried and torn into large pieces Lentils: • 2 teaspoons olive oil • 1 small sweet onion, cut into half rings • 1/2 teaspoon salt • freshly ground black pepper

• 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar • 3/4 cup brown lentils, rinsed • 1 cup cold water Roasted Pears: • 2 firm, ripe Anjou pears • 2 teaspoons olive oil • 2 teaspoons honey • 6 to 8 sage leaves, torn Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Prepare greens and transfer to large bowl. Place saucepan over medium heat. Once hot, add olive oil, onions, salt and pepper, and saute until onions begin to caramelize. Add vinegar to deglaze pan, stirring to pick up bits that may be stuck to the bottom. Cook until vinegar reduces and pan is nearly dry, about 3 minutes. Add lentils and water, cover and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce heat to medium low and simmer for 1518 minutes, or until lentils are al dente. Spread pears onto sheet pan. Stir olive oil and honey together and drizzle over pears. Add sage leaves, toss pears gently with mixture and transfer to oven. Roast pears for 12-15 minutes, or until just tender. When lentils are done, pour atop the winter greens while still hot. Using tongs, toss lentils and greens together until greens are softened and glossy. Transfer mixture to a clean bowl and drizzle with more olive oil. Top the warm salad with roasted pears and sage leaves. Serve immediately.

Southwest Montana
Where it all comes together By Colin Anderson
C
owboys, college kids, the ultra-wealthy, and the family caravan— all characters you’re likely to see on a visit to Bozeman, Montana. Originally a small ranching community, Bozeman continues to evolve and is now the central hub for visitors to Yellowstone National Park, Big Sky Resort and an expanding Montana State University. The combination of youth and retirees, city and country dwellers, and longtime residents alongside vacation homeowners has created a diverse destination rarely seen today. A stroll down Main will show you saloons that have stood for decades along with shops featuring upscale clothing and art. You’ll bump into wranglers and Stetsons, engineering students letting off steam, and travelers looking to flee their big city life for a week or so. The reason for each visit varies, but it’s easy to see how Bozeman’s tourism industry continues to grow and adapt to an ever increasing visitor population. Western Montana in general boasts some of the most breathtaking scenery and incredible outdoor experiences in the lower 48. Bozeman serves as home base for many planning to spend their trip in the great outdoors. Evidenced by the numerous fly shops that dot the town, trout fishing is a huge draw here. The Gallatin, Madison and Yellowstone rivers all carry the blue ribbon designation for their water quality, public accessibility, native trout population and ability to handle fishing pressure. Serious anglers from all over the country put a float down one of these Montana legends as a fly fishing bucket list can’t miss. Very fortunate fishermen can land one of only a few yearly permits for a five-day float down the Smith River. During the 60-mile float, it’s rare to see another outfit giving visitors a truly alone-in-the-wild experience. Yellowstone National Park sits just 90 miles south of town and guests can enter the north end of the park through Gardner or the west entrance at West Yellowstone. Easily one of the most visited and popular National Parks in the country, a trip into Yellowstone will bring you up close and personal with wildlife, geothermal wonders, as well as spectacular bodies of water and mountain peaks. Yellowstone is one of the best places in the country to see the most famous animals of the West. Entering through Gardner, you are all but guaranteed to see herds of elk and some of the last native buffalo left in the West. While they may look like calm massive cows, every year overzealous picture takers get mauled by bison who feel threatened when people get too close. Don’t be that person. These 1,000-pound animals will often block the roadway, and provoking them or honking your horn does little to sway them into moving out of your way. Nature makes the rules and runs the show here.

Another common occurrence in the park is a traffic build up also known as a “bear jam.” Grizzly and black bears are often spotted right from the road, and as soon as they are seen, cars pull over and stack up to get a glimpse. This causes a headache for park staff, but the chance to see a grizzly in the wild is too much for most visitors to pass up and drive by. There is an average of one bear attack each year in the park, and most of those occur where visitors are out hiking and surprise a bear. Before going out on trips, park staff educates hikers on how to avoid surprising a bear and what to do if charged. Your odds of being attacked are extremely low, but having the knowledge of what to do beforehand could make all the difference. Across miles of hiking trails there are deer, moose, eagles, as well as the rarely seen bobcat, mountain lion and wolf pack. The other feature many visitors come to see is the majority of active geysers in the world. Old Faithful is the most popular, but many are surprised to learn that it does not erupt exactly every 60 minutes and isn’t even the most frequent erupting or largest geyser in the park; it is however the most consistent. There are more than 300 erupting geysers in Yellowstone making it the largest concentration in the world. If you can’t wait until your trip, the National Park Service has a constant live stream where you can watch the Old Faithful eruption (www.nps.gov/features/yell/webcam/oldFaithfulStreaming.html). This is truly a spectacular place and a trip through the park should not be missed. While summer brings outdoor hikers, bikers, fishermen and adventure seekers, winter brings visitors looking for light fluffy powder, steep terrain and an incredible ski experience. Locals take the 30-minute drive to Bridger Bowl ski area, famous for soft snow as well as some of the most challenging terrain around. Back country skiers hike to the very top for untouched powder and the thrill of leaping off cliffs and ledges. There are also miles of cross-

country skiing as well as snowshoeing trails. The more famous mountain, Big Sky, sits about an hour south of Bozeman and boasts one of the largest skiable mountains in North America. This is a true western resort experience with dozens of dining and onmountain lodging options. The gathering area seems more like a small downtown than a ski chalet. It would be a challenge to hit every run if you had a week, and if you aren’t a big fan of chairlifts, there is a run that’s six miles long that will take you plenty of time to traverse. Multi-million dollar homes are common throughout the area. Plans were laid to create a private ski mountain called The Yellowstone Club that encompassed nearby Moonlight Basin. However, the dream didn’t come to fruition and in 2013,
Moonlight became part of Big Sky Resort, creating over 7,600 acres of skiable terrain. If a more laid back stay is your style, there are plenty of options back in Bozeman, and the town is easy to navigate on foot. During the summer months, the downtown area puts on weekly art walks featuring the local galleries as well as ”Music on Main” which features live local bands, activities for kids, and plenty of food trucks serving up a variety of specialties. Pride from Montana State University shuts down Main Street in both the spring and fall for graduating senior sendoffs and fall homecoming parades and pep rallies. of Montana. It’s been going on since 1897, and it’s easy to tell which side you’re on during Cat-Griz week. A melting pot of Old West and modern is what you’ll find on your visit to the greater Bozeman area. Luxurious options abound alongside beat up farm trucks. A passion for the outdoors is what drives visitors here and keeps locals from ever leaving the area. Big Sky country is a term not easily described until you’ve experienced it firsthand. Western Montana is the playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Even if you’re not the mountaineering type, you can experience all the beauty of this region through the window of your car or a short stroll off the beaten path.
