MARCH IS UPON US which means spring is right around the corner! With temperatures on the rise and the days getting longer, we welcome the coming of the season. Soon, the gray days will subside and we will find ourselves with renewed energy, eager to get out and enjoy the beautiful weather. Spring is the perfect time to start to plan your summer activities. Whether it is a long weekend to one of our nearby national parks or an excursion to some of the many festivals throughout the Pacific Northwest, there are countless opportunities to get out and explore. While there are many places to visit on road trips, the truth is right here in our own community there is much to do. Take a few days off and become a tourist in your own city. Have your children pick out places they like to visit. Go to the Chamber of Commerce and find out what is popular among visitors to our town. You may just discover there are many exciting things that you never even knew about right in your own backyard. However you wish to welcome spring and anticipate summer, do so with a sense of adventure in mind. I guarantee you won’t regret it.

ESSENTIALS By Annie Nye, Interior Designer, Selkirk Glass & Cabinets, a division of Ponderay Design Center
LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT? A FEW ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS TO GREAT CURB APPEAL
THE EXTERIOR OF YOUR HOME is what provides the first impression to any visitors. Whether those visitors are guests, family or potential buyers, the curb appeal is where it’s at and what sets the mood for getting them in the door. Real estate agents will tell you that buyers make their decision within a few seconds of pulling into the driveway of a potential home. If they don’t like what they see outside, they may not even opt to check out what’s inside. “Don’t judge a book by its cover” does not apply to homes! It’s true—I look on Zillow every morning for new listings and potential houses. I can look at the first picture and scroll right past if it doesn’t have the right curb appeal. Everyone is different and looks for what’s important to them, but we can all agree on a few things that help with the outward appearance of a home.

LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT
SandpointLivingLocal.com
22
First, it should be decluttered. The lawn can’t have a collection of concrete statues, old cars or waist-high weeds. Your guests shouldn’t need to wind their way through your collectibles to get to your front door. Keep your lawn and flower beds well-manicured. It shows that you take pride in your possessions. The paint should still be protecting the siding, eaves and soffits of your home. If there is paint peeling, chipping or faded, it’s not doing the job and it’s time for a touch-up. Most of the time, this means painting the whole house, including all the trim, but once it’s done, stand back and look—it’s like a whole new house! This investment is one that pays off. A few items rank high on the list of return on investment (ROI) for the exterior of your home. One idea is adding stone elements to the exterior of your home. This may mean replacing vinyl with manufactured or cultured stone or adding stone to the lower half of any bump-outs or cantilevered areas. Another hot spot is the garage doors. Most of the time this is because the garage doors face the drive, and it’s what people see as they approach your home. The front door is also something that can make a great first impression. There are lots of options for these, and elements such as glass panels or textured finishes can add a lot, especially when paired with the stone accents and a new garage door! The average ROI for garage and entry doors is 91 percent, so you can splurge on these knowing that you will get most of your money back if you should choose to sell your home. With spring right around the corner, now is the time to start planning those projects. You should also think about fixing up those outdoor entertainment spaces. Last summer I wrote an article on how to create fire pits, outdoor sitting areas and exterior entertainment spaces. Bringing elements of the indoors to the outside with these focal points provides a much larger entertainment space. It’s a space that’s open, roomy, full of fresh air and provides a setting where people tend to be more relaxed. I don’t know about you, but I am ready for summer to get here so I can be outside and be more relaxed. HEY, Mother Nature, hurry up with this spring thing and bring on the summer sunshine!

First of all, you need to recognize them. Here are a few to consider: • Longer life spans – A 65-year-old woman is expected to live, on average, another 20.5 years, compared to 17.9 years for a 65-year-old man, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. That’s another 2½ years of life – and 2½ years more of expenses. • Lower incomes – Women working full time in the United States typically are paid 80 percent of what men earn, according to Census Bureau data. • More time away from the workforce – Men work an average of 38 years, compared to just 29 for women, according to the Pew Research Center and the Social Security Administration. The gap is largely due to women taking time off to care for young children and elderly parents. Women who work substantially fewer years than men will miss out on hundreds of thousands of dollars in earnings and many years of contributions to 401(k)s or other retirement plans. These statistics certainly are sobering – but they don’t mean you are powerless to improve your financial security. In fact, you can do quite a lot, including the following:

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY, observed on March 8, celebrates the social, cultural and political achievements of women. Yet, women continue to face many challenges. For one thing, women still encounter genderspecific obstacles to their important financial goals, such as a comfortable retirement. If you’re a woman, what can you do to get past these barriers?
Member SIPC
SandpointLivingLocal.com

• Boost your retirement plan contributions – Put in as much as you can afford to your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored plan and increase your contributions whenever you get a raise. And even if you have a 401(k), you may still be eligible to contribute to an IRA. • Invest for growth – Some studies have shown that women may invest less aggressively than men. If you invest mostly in conservative vehicles, you may run the risk of falling short of your financial goals. To achieve these goals, you’ll need a reasonable amount of growth potential in your portfolio. • Extend your working life – If you like your job, you may want to consider sticking with it a couple of years past when you initially thought you’d retire. You’ll be able to add to your retirement accounts, and the extra years of work may help you increase your Social Security benefits. These payments are based on an average of your highest 35 years of earnings, so if you have a zero in some of these years, it will pull the average down. Consequently, your extra years of work may help erase those zeros. But even if you have a long, unbroken work record, your extended career can help you in regard to Social Security, because the extra money may mean you can afford to delay collecting benefits— and the longer you wait past 62, the bigger your checks will be—at least until you turn 70, when they “max out.” You’ll help yourself by becoming familiar with the special issues women face in meeting their long-term goals. As you know, women have met challenges successfully for a long time. After all, Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did – except backwards and in heels.

STEPS TO TAKE ON THE JOURNEY BY DEBORAH OLIVE
THERE’S AN AGE-OLD RIDDLE, “What’s the most active day of the year?” Answer: March 4th. March has the command to move forward built into its name. This is the month to move forward. This is the month to build your “Momentum Mindset.” Momentum requires staying focused on your outcome. The more activities you direct toward your goal, the more likely it is you’ll get there. And the fewer detours you take, the more quickly you’ll arrive. Nevertheless, the destination isn’t always clear, and the next step isn’t always obvious. We live in a busy world where it’s easy to get sidetracked and become distracted. The first step to a momentum mindset is a clear vision, which can be rather elusive since it can shift as you move toward it. How clear is your 2017 vision? As you move forward, is it becoming clearer? Are you beginning to experience parts of your vision? Are your steps forward creating more certainty? It is a dynamic process that often includes detours. The Northwest offers many hiking trails that gain altitude and act as a powerful metaphor for the twists and turns that arise as we move toward our vision. Imagine your 2017 vision as a hike to the top of a steep trail with a beautiful panoramic view. You love the picture of that view hanging on your wall, and you imagine what it would be like to stand on top with the wind in your hair taking your own photograph of that view, but you’ve never been on the trail before. In fact, you’re rather new to hiking. Until you’re on the trail and feel the stability of your boots beneath your feet, the response of your muscles, the depth of your breath and use your navigational skills, it only lives in your imagination. Once you’re on the trail, you
learn things about hiking and about yourself you simply couldn’t know from looking at the picture. The second step is to prepare. You buy the gear and build your endurance. The desire to stand on the summit draws you, and the day comes when you load your gear in the car and drive to the trailhead. You set out with gusto, only to realize that much of your trip involves leaning into the hill and taking the next step up. Your primary view is your boots, dirt, trees and a few features on either side of the trail. Your experience is nothing like the photo from the summit that hangs on your wall. You dig deep for the type of discipline required to take another step when you’re tired and all you see is dirt. Discipline is the third step. As you come around a bend, you’re greeted with an opening in the trees and a vista that takes your breath away. As you savor the moment, you realize, “Though you’re not standing on top, this is what it looks like on the way.” The tiredness in your body vaporizes as does the memory of all of those steps looking at your boots and the dirt. You smile, delighted with where you are in the moment, and you get a second wind – both physically and mentally. Now you’re eager to press forward. Your momentum mindset just kicked in. Take these steps to build your momentum mindset and soon you will be reaching your goals and vision in both your personal and professional life.

SEE PAST PACK MENTALITY
DOES YOUR PET SUFFER FROM ALLERGIES? BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL
PREVENTION
QUESTION: IS IT NORMAL for my pet to lick his/her paws?
(clean) carpet. As with humans, pets can have year-round allergies. It’s important to determine whether they are environmental or food related because often they present with similar signs. There are subtle patterns and clues as well as diagnostic tests that your veterinarian can use to help decide the first step for diagnosis and management of allergies.
a. never b. a few times per day c. whenever they are laying down d. most of their waking hours I found myself asking this question when one of my dog’s occasional foot licking had become frequent, to the point of annoying!
By the time they are examined by their veterinarian, many allergic pets have more going on than just a simple reaction. That frequent foot licking traps moisture between warm toes and creates the perfect environment for bacteria and yeast to multiply like crazy! A similar process happens in those deep, dark, warm ear canals when the skin becomes inflamed from an allergic reaction. This means that skin infections are usually the first thing to get under control when starting an allergy treatment because infections alone create their own discomfort.
Occasional foot licking, skin and ear scratching is normal. If, however, your pet is licking his/her feet more than one to two times per day, there is a good chance that a deeper issue is at hand. Human allergies present as runny noses, red, watery eyes, and abdominal bloating and gas. On the other hand, dogs and cats get itchy, inflamed skin that is manifested by licking, chewing, scratching and rubbing on your
It is important to know that sometimes trial treatments are required to rule out (or in) a certain form of allergy. There are also underlying diseases that can potentiate skin disorders making them resistant to treatment, so other seemingly unrelated tests may be recommended to ensure you aren’t fighting a losing battle. Allergic skin diseases can be frustrating and take time to treat before results are seen. Pet owners should not lose heart! As long as they are patient and committed to treating their itchy and painful pet, positive results will be achieved.
ALLERGIES?
Yes, we know they can’t speak English, but most allergy suffering pets tend to “act normal.” He/she won’t tell you they’re uncomfortable until pretty late in the disease process. That is because pack mentality is genetically wired in our companion animal friends. Displaying weakness to the head chief (their provider) could get them sent to the shelter! So look between those toes, down in the ears, and while you may miss something subtle, an obvious problem will jump out

Do remember those ear canals are deep and can only be fully visualized with an otoscope so there may be a problem you can’t see. So if your friend is scratching more frequently than normal, better safe than sorry. Have your pet examined by his/her veterinarian. Generally, the longer a skin/ear/lick problem persists, the more extended its treatment. So, the next time your dog’s incessant licking makes you crazy, think about how you feel when someone tells you to stop scratching that giant mosquito bite, and get him/her examined right away!

Small-town electric contractor taking on big-town projects BY JILLIAN CHANDLER

Owners and husband-and-wife team Dan and Brissa Peterson have deep roots in Sandpoint going several generations back. Both born and raised in Sandpoint, they only ever left the area to attend college, with the intent of coming back. And they did, continuing the legacy with their daughter Josephine, who was born in Sandpoint one year ago. Dan and Brissa are the proud local owners and operators of Tork Electric, an electric contractor service located right here in Sandpoint; Dan the master electrician and Brissa the administrative manager. Priding themselves for being a small-town company with the ability to take on big-town projects, Tork Electric has a knowledgeable and experienced workforce capable of taking on large projects, with skills ranging beyond custom homes. The company has completed small hydro plants, aircraft manufacturing buildings, communication towers, large office spaces and emergency backup systems for not just the home but for medical offices and large businesses. “When we finish a custom home or large commercial project and sit back to look at what we have accomplished, it’s pretty amazing,” Brissa says. “You start with nothing sometimes; and in the end have a beautiful, unique, fully operational project. We take great pride in our work.”
When Tork Electric is done with your space, it won’t just be functional but it will look great too. They make sure that all switches and outlets are lined up perfectly, all electrical conduits are bent just right so the sweeps look uniform, light fixtures line up, and more. “In the end, when we look at what we did, we are proud of it,” adds Brissa. “We are honored to put our name on it.” Another rewarding part of running Tork for Dan and Brissa is that they are employing people and helping them to support their families. To them, their employees truly are like family. And in fact, two of them are! Dan’s brother and father work with them. The Petersons don’t look at their employees as working for them but with them.
“We love what we do, we love helping people and we love our community,” says Brissa. “We feel so fortunate to have been able to open our business right here in Sandpoint where we grew up. Not everyone is lucky enough to live and work in Sandpoint, and we don’t take that for granted. We love it here and will never leave.”
“Our team is just that, a team,” Dan says. “We work well together and are always willing to help each other out to finish the job.”

At Tork Electric, you will find a company with determination. They have been a part of a handful of projects in town including The Hive, Kochava and Quest, which were under extremely tight deadlines. But with their determination and hard work, the electric contractors at Tork repeatedly pull through and get the job done. They will even go the extra mile and work seven days a week when necessary. The Petersons care about their business and their community. They participate in PBCA (Panhandle Builders Contractors Association) and donate financially to PBCA and the Chafe 150.

EVERY DAY, PEOPLE ARE EXPOSED to minimal levels of naturallyoccurring radiation from their surroundings. However, according to a report by the American Medical Association, over the past two decades levels of radiation exposure from artificial sources—primarily from medical imaging—have been increasing.

Studies have also shown children in particular face potential adverse effects from excessive medical radiation. Radiation damage is cumulative over one’s lifespan, so the more radiation can be reduced in children, the better.

treats kids from Washington, Montana, Idaho and Alaska, and no other hospital throughout the region has this cutting edge technology! Lower Radiation This groundbreaking technology will produce an x-ray of the whole body in 3D using a fraction of the radiation dose it would take to do with conventional radiography—up to nine times less. The EOS Imaging System images are taken in a standing or sitting position, and is best suited primarily for spine conditions, lower limb deficiencies and hip conditions, where the frequency of radiographic images can be high. Shriners Hospitals for Children - Spokane is a pediatric orthopaedic hospital specializing in conditions affecting the muscles, bones and joints, and relies on multiple radiographic images for diagnostic and surgery and treatment planning purposes. One of the Shriners Hospitals for Children’s specialties is treating spine conditions such as scoliosis; adolescent scoliosis patients may undergo radiographic imaging every three to six months, resulting in up to 20-plus scans over the course of treatment. The pediatric orthopaedic surgeons at the Spokane Shriners Hospital aim for using the lowest possible radiation dose in pediatric radiology. “As a parent, we want the best for our kids. The fact that Shriners Hospitals for Children has made the investment in this
amazing state-of-the-art x-ray machine which delivers lower radiation for my daughter Jessica, just reinforces my respect in the medical delivery from the Spokane Shriners Hospital,” says Dana Bellefeuille, Shriners Hospital patient parent.
the same time. Usually, patients getting spine images have a picture done from the back and another done from the side. The EOS allows us to take both 2D pictures at the same time. Two pictures at once means it is faster for our patients.”
In addition to the health benefits and the diagnostic benefits, the EOS Imaging machine is a kid friendly machine. “The kids love it! Every week someone tells me it looks like a spaceship”, says the hospital’s Radiology Manager, Lucy Weidert. “Sometimes getting x-rayed can be scary for a child. With the EOS, the fear disappears and they are excited to get in the machine, it is open on top and in the front so they don’t feel closed in.”
“EOS represents a breakthrough in orthopaedic imaging. The high-quality images in appropriate patients enable our physicians to make more informed diagnosis and treatment decisions. And the unparalleled benefits in terms of reduced radiation dose and quicker scanning procedure is what is best for our patients,” said Glen Baird, MD, Chief of Staff, Shriners Hospitals for Children - Spokane. “Shriners Hospitals for Children- Spokane is one of only a handful of medical centers in the United States that can offer this technology, we are excited to bring this technology to our region.”
Improved Diagnostics 3D weight-bearing images of children in an upright, standing position gives the Shriners Hospital medical staff a more accurate view of the spine and lower limbs to better evaluate and analyze the bones, joints and ligaments from multiple angles. This type of imaging provide views of all areas of the body with one image, rather than stitching together multiple images. It gives the doctors an accurate view of the musculoskeletal system that is essential to diagnosis and treatment planning. Lucy, Radiology Manager, adds “It’s faster. The EOS machine can image the entire spine in less than 20 seconds. EOS will take two views at

Providing the EOS technology gives the expert pediatric orthopaedic surgeons a new level of visual detail which will aid diagnosis and help determine the best treatment strategies – at a much lower radiation dose. TEACHERS WITH A BIG HEART
CAROLYN WHALEN NORTHSIDE ELEMENTARY BY PATTY HUTCHENS
FIRST GRADE TEACHER, Carolyn Whalen, spends most of her day teaching math, reading and writing to her students at Northside Elementary. And because the school also instructs in a thematic way, she also incorporates science, social studies, geography and art into the curriculum. It is a job she loves and about which she is passionate. Whalen has been a teacher for over 25 years and has taught in five different school districts in Idaho. When asked what she enjoys most about her role, Whalen said it is the relationships she builds with students and their families. “I believe that students grow academically in leaps and bounds when they know that their teacher cares about them and visualizes a bright and shiny future for them,” said Whalen. “I also love those ‘ah-hah’ moments when a child has a breakthrough in their learning process and something that seemed hard—or even impossible—is within their grasp. That’s magical!” While there are many moments that stand out in her nearly three decades of teaching, it was one year while teaching fourth grade that she will recall forever. “One year, while teaching about the different tribes that are native to our state, I learned that the Nez Perce Tribe was trying to recover some artifacts from the state of Ohio,” shared Whalen. “Our fourth grade class voted to hold a fundraising bake sale on a Saturday to support the tribe’s quest to acquire these culturally–relevant items. One of my most memorable moments was when a student and her mother walked over two miles to share a home-baked pie to sell and help with the sale.”
She later learned the family’s only vehicle was in use by the student’s dad, who worked on one of the local sugar beet farms. “I also learned that it was important to her and her family to support someone else’s vision of retaining what was important to family and culture. To this day, I feel that she taught me as much, if not more, than I could ever have taught her.” Northside Principal, Perky Smith-Hagadone, said that Whelan is a huge asset to the school’s staff. “Carolyn has been Northside’s first grade teacher for six years. One can often hear me saying that Carolyn can literally teach anyone to read…She strives to make her class hands-on and engaging every day,” said Smith-Hagadone. Whalen said if there is one life lesson she would like to instill in her students it is to never stop learning. “I didn’t earn my Master’s Degree until nine years ago. I still love learning all I can, particularly if it relates to how I can make a difference in some way— to children or adults!” As for Smith-Hagadone, she is grateful to have such a wonderful teacher on her staff. “Our pride in her is immense,” she said.

M ILLENNOVAT I O N Generations sharing and learning from one another By Dr. Ryan Bones

HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED how generations seem to have “personalities” like people do? Along with those personalities often come stereotypes. For example, the baby boomers were “free spirited.” Their kids, the Gen X-ers, are often considered cynical and negative. Then, of course you have those lazy, entitled millennials. We’ve all heard these. Stereotypes survive because people perpetuate them and believe them to be true. So, what if a generation wanted to change its image or redefine itself? I suppose before you can redefine anything, you’d need to clearly define it in the first place. Let’s start with the word “millennial”—who is a millennial? Well, Generation Y (as they are also sometimes called) typically includes anyone born between 1980 and 1995—those who came of age with the new millennium, so it can range anywhere from those currently 20 to 35 years old. At 27, this puts me smack dab in the center of the generation. We’re normally looked at as the stupid, shallow, and selfie-obsessed “worst generation yet” who can’t put down our phones long enough to have a real conversation. In the workplace, we’re considered lazy, entitled job hoppers who expect a trophy just for showing up. However, you may be surprised to learn that while most of these preconceptions are inaccurate, they are actually creating a disconnect among generations that is
24 were enrolled in college, an American record. Believe it or not, we also read more. Eighty percent of those over 30 have finished a book in the last year, while 90 percent of the under-30 crowd has done the same. Millennials have also shown to be more tolerant and racially diverse than previous generations—a key quality in the ever-evolving national and global economies. While these are big stats, there is one thing about our generation that is changing the landscape of the business world more than any other—our fundamental desire to make a difference. Eightyfour percent of millennials surveyed agreed with the statement: “Knowing I am helping to make a positive difference in the world is more important to me than professional recognition.” We don’t care as much about climbing ladders. It was found that the most important thing young adults ages 21 to 31 wanted in a successful career was a sense of meaning, and three-fourths stated that their ability to excel in their job is contingent upon deriving meaning from their work. So what does “meaning” mean, exactly? The business magazine, Fast Company, found that meaningful work allows one to share their gifts, make an impact in the lives of others, and live their desired quality of life. Unfortunately, less than half of the millennials surveyed reported feeling that they actually get this sense of “meaning”—indicating that the current systems
Each and every person within each generation has the capability to create a better life for themselves and those around them. By working together, we can not only re-write our story, but also that of our generation.
slowly changing the face of business as we know it. In 2015, millennials surpassed Generation X to become the largest share of the American workforce at 53.5 million strong. By 2018, we’re on track to eclipse boomers in spending power at $3.4 trillion, and by 2020 we’ll make up 40 percent of the electorate. Scary? Not if you consider that millennials are actually on pace to become the most educated generation in history. As of 2008, 40 percent of people between the ages of 18 and

in place by most organizations to motivate millennials are missing their mark. That’s why more and more of us are striking out on our own to create our purpose and meaning by starting innovative businesses. Fifty-four percent of millennials surveyed either want to start a business or already have. Even in our younger age, our generation has already created twice as many businesses as the boomers, and to great success. Gen-Y business owners are leading bigger teams, seeing higher profit
margins, and having a bigger social impact than previous generations. In fact, 61 percent of millennial-owned businesses reported increased sales over the past six months versus only 41 percent of small business owners overall. Seeing this trend, Forbes Magazine has named us “The True Entrepreneur Generation.” As more and more millennials are innovating and creating meaningful work through their business, we are starting to see jobs so satisfying and congruent with lives that the two are almost indistinguishable from one another. You don’t have to “punch out” when you’re doing what you love.

So what is it about our “entitled, tech-obsessed generation” that makes for successful business owners? Let’s take a closer look at some of those stereotypes. “Entitled.” A lot of millennials come off as full of themselves, but that can also be viewed as confidence and a strong belief in themselves and their abilities—crucial qualities to have in the entrepreneurial arena. “Obsessed with technology.” Okay, that one is true. Our generation was born and raised with technology. We were there when dial-up, AOL and MSN Messenger were things. We drooled over the Razr and wanted a Blackberry so we could go online on our phones! That constant evolution of technology throughout our lives has resulted in our generation becoming very tech savvy and quick to adopt new technology. As a result, we’ve developed a firm grasp on these tools
for things like building relationships, promoting our businesses, crowdsourcing solutions, and researching information on demand. Our generation also gets called “delusional” and “unrealistic.” I’d say, yeah that’s probably somewhat true, but not in a bad way. Delusional and unrealistic are the types of qualities that lead to innovation. Our fresh perspective has introduced new solutions to old problems. As Albert Einstein said, “We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” One trap we need to avoid as a generation, however, is thinking that we have all the answers. While we may be great with an iPhone,

we don’t have the knowledge and wisdom that only comes from running a successful business through economic ups and downs, personnel changes and unexpected challenges. This is where the generations ahead of us will always have us beat—experience. The good news is that they are willing to share it. The best thing we can do for ourselves and our business is find and connect with those who have been there before—to mentor us, answer our questions and help us avoid the mistakes they made in business and in life. So millennials, don’t be afraid to reach out—and to those older, please don’t be afraid to help us! No matter where you fall within the generations, if there is something you don’t like about our world, change it! So many people are quick to post a status, but often fail to take any real action. The world will be changed by our example—not by our opinion. Each and every person within each generation has the capability to create a better life for themselves and those around them. ATHLETES OF ELIANA CRAVENS & PATRICK ROCKWELL
BY PATTY HUTCHENS
ELIANA CRAVENS: ELIANA CRAVENS has been on the varsity cheerleading squad since she was a freshman. It is something she thoroughly enjoys and plans to continue at the collegiate level.

“I enjoy stunting and tumbling because I love the fact that I can lift others and myself up to do things that defy gravity,” said the Sandpoint High School junior. In addition to cheer, Eliana also participates in track and field, something she began her sophomore year. When asked about her future plans, Eliana shares that she plans to attend Boise State University to study anthropology. “I really want to be an archaeologist because I find it to be an interesting career. Also, I’ve always wanted to be like Indiana Jones,” shared Eliana who added she also plans to cheer for Boise State University as well.

Eliana said that when it comes to life challenges, she has found the biggest hurdle for her to overcome has been leadership. “On the sidelines, in the classrooms and in the community, leadership is a vital component. I overcome this challenge by staying positive and representing my school to the best of my ability,” said Eliana. As with any sport, coaches do more than teach about a given sport. They also impart life lessons to those on their teams. For Eliana, the lesson she will carry with her throughout all that she does in life is that of accountability. “One lesson that I’ve learned from my coaches is to hold myself and others accountable for their actions.”

PATRICK ROCKWELL: A THREE-SPORT ATHLETE, Patrick Rockwell knows what it takes to excel. “I have been playing basketball, tennis and soccer since I was very young. This includes two years of varsity soccer, two years of varsity basketball and four years of varsity tennis,” said Patrick. That alone takes a great deal of commitment, but add on top of that the fact that Patrick is able to maintain a 4.27 GPA, and it is nothing short of impressive. One thing he has learned through athletics is endurance. “Nothing else in life has pushed me to my physical extremes like sports,” shared Patrick, who adds that what he loves most about athletics is being with a good group of people with whom he is able to spend a majority of his free time. “I have formed my best friendships through sports and being part of a team.”
Deliveries Available
Patrick plans to attend the University of Utah in Salt Lake City where he will pursue a mechanical engineering degree. “Someday I want to invent something sweet that helps a lot of people,” said Patrick. “I’ve always been good at math and like to problem solve.” He credits Kent Anderson, his tennis coach, with being the most inspirational coach in his life. “He has shown me that being a good person is much more important than winning every single match that you play. He has always been very relaxed and fun to be around and gives feedback to people in a positive way,” said Patrick. “I have never seen this guy have a frown on his face, and one day I want to be as happy and fun to be around as Kent Anderson.”

FOR PEOPLE WHO LOVE THEIR PETS, having to give them up for adoption or surrendering them to a shelter can be one of the most emotional experiences of their lives. Pets are surrendered for a number of reasons. Perhaps the owner needs to move into assisted living where animals are not allowed. A move to a new city or poor interactions with children or other animals can lead to some really tough decisions. Panhandle Animal Shelter (PAS) in Sandpoint sees this on a daily basis, as do thousands of other shelters across the country. While PAS is a no-kill shelter, many across the country are forced to euthanize surrendered dogs and cats because they do not have the room to accommodate all animals. With this in mind, volunteers at PAS decided to do some brainstorming on how to keep more animals in loving homes and fewer inside the shelter. What they came up with utilizes social media platforms and web presence and the early results are quite astounding. “We saw a significant increase in owner surrenders in 2015,” said Panhandle Animal Shelter Executive Director Mandy Evans. “We decided to take a proactive approach to either help people keep their animals or, if they had no other choice, provide them with an alternative to shelter surrender.” That alternative is the website www.home-home.org. Launched this past August with the help of the Northern Tier Inland Northwest Community Foundation and other grants, the website is a place for current owners to put up information on their pet in need of a new home. Those interested in taking ownership of the animal can reach out to the owner and the pet can be transferred without it ever having to spend time in a shelter. Within two months of the site going live, PAS saw a 33-percent reduction in owner surrenders. “We usually had about 70 dogs in the shelter and nowadays it’s about 40. This is because fewer people are surrendering; and because the population is lower, animals are moving out of the shelter more quickly,” said Evans. The process in place for Home to Home is fairly simple. When someone contacts the Panhandle Animal Shelter wanting to surrender a pet, the staff or hotline volunteers first get a proper understanding as to why this is happening. Often there are programs PAS can point pet owners towards for help covering spay/neuter, feeding costs and behavioral issues. It is always the first and foremost priority to keep the animal with its owner, however if this simply is not a reality, the Home to Home program is often the next step. Pet owners are encouraged to register their animals on the website. Owners will fill out their contact information as well as the breed and age of their animal. A photo is uploaded and additional information on the pet or circumstance for surrender is posted. Once that photo is posted, it is also shared on the PAS Facebook page and can reach its nearly 10,000 followers. Those looking to bring a pet into their home can click on the “Find a Pet” tab on the website where all of the pets posted on the site are located. If there is interest in an animal, the two parties agree to meet up. If it works out, the animal will find a new home without having to go through the shelter process. No money is ever exchanged and the Panhandle Animal Shelter staff does a follow-up each time to make sure everything went well on the exchange. “There’s typically shaming involved when surrendering pets like; ‘that must be a bad person,’ or ‘they should have never got a pet in the first place’,” said Evans. “We are here to make sure no one is shamed, and we make the right choice for you and your pet.”

While many of the animals are in need of permanent homes, some community members are just looking for some temporary help while dealing with sudden life changes. A sudden illness might not allow owners to take care of their pet, and immediate family might need someone to look after the animal before they can take it into their lives. “We recently had a Coon Hound up on the site where the owner just needed someone to give their pet a home for three months. Incredibly,
we found a foster home for the animal in just three days,” said Evans. With the initial success of the website, Evans is reaching out to other shelters to share the program and some of the early figures. Her twin sister operates a shelter in California and the two are working on setting up a partner shelter system. “I was really surprised at the success of it, and this is really making a huge difference in our community,” said Evans. With an upcoming attempt to bring the program into the national spotlight, a bigger website presence is being funded through a private foundation. Locals can also directly support both the mission of Home to Home and the Panhandle Animal Shelter with donations through the website or by volunteering. The Panhandle Animal Shelter hopes that seeing more pets on the site and sharing these animals through their social media platforms will continue to reduce the number of direct surrenders at the shelter. Early indications show that this is entirely possible, and Evans is excited to see how the program continues to

grow on both a local and national level. “I’m really excited to report back to the grant and share the success we’ve had thanks to that program,” she said. COURTESY BRENT LEEDLE
Through the first seven months of www.homehome.org being up, 80 pets have been posted with 40 finding new adoptive homes. Just 10 of those 80 have ended up being surrendered to PAS. Without the site, it’s likely that each one would have been taken to the shelter. According to PAS, there are some very big benefits to avoiding even a few days of shelter for animals in need of adoption. Home to Home reduces stress on animals by keeping them out of the shelter. This leaves more shelter resources available to animals with no other options. The program also gives potential new owners a chance to learn more about the animals directly from the current owner.
It’s never easy making the decision to part ways with a pet. People might feel ashamed, but reaching out to PAS you will not be shamed and might even find ways of keeping your pet you hadn’t thought of before. If your animal does need a new home, it is comforting to know there is a platform locally where you can find another passionate member in your own community, meet them and know that your beloved pet is going to a home where it will be loved and cared for.

A Faster Road to Recovery By Amanda Thome, DPT, Idaho Pain Clinic
HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED WHAT it would feel like to walk on the moon? Maybe you’ve wondered if you weighed 50 or 100 pounds less, could you move without pain or maybe train for that marathon with less impact and chance of injury. Those very questions had to be asked by the company behind the AlterG; the anti-gravity treadmill system that for once doesn’t require its users to don those cumbersome harnesses to achieve body weight offloading. Clients no longer need to submerge themselves in the pool up to their shoulders to achieve 80 percent offloading. The AlterG is NASA-developed technology which uses a sealed air chamber to offload its user’s body weight. The system is able
to offload up to 80 percent of the client’s weight and can be adjusted by one- percent increments, no water or harness needed. So what does this mean for users? This means that for some people they will be able to take their first pain-free steps in years. It means that people recovering after orthopedic surgery can get back to walking sooner and with less pain than ever before. Users recovering from neurological conditions such as stroke, Guillain–Barré syndrome or those with Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis can walk in a safe environment with body weight offloaded. The AlterG is widely used with clients that

SORE MUSCLES? UNDERSTANDING DOMS CAN LEAD TO PREVENTION BY RYANNE LEMON, PTA, CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY
REST DELAYED ONSET MUSCLE soreness (DOMS) is a distinctive muscle pain that almost everyone has experienced after performing intense or unfamiliar exercises. DOMS is a unique type of muscle pain in that it usually sets in 24 to 48 hours after the initial workout and may continue for up to 72 hours before recovery. DOMS has been referred to as muscle fever due to the fact that your muscles may feel tired and sickly as well as sore. The cause of DOMS has been studied but without any definitive answers. Most evidence concludes that the cause is from micro-trauma to the muscle fibers. The damaged muscle fibers may trigger an immune response within the muscle, leading to inflammation and pain. Almost all studies show that this type of muscle pain is a result of an eccentric or isometric muscle contraction in which the muscle is being worked as it lengthens or stays static, not as it shortens. For example, DOMS could occur with a bicep curl or sit up, not with the bringing the weight up and closer to the body, but with the slow lowering of the weight down and away from center. In jumping and lunging activities, DOMS occurs with the landing and deceleration of the exercise. It is important to note that DOMS is not necessarily an undesirable occurrence, and muscles adapt to the increased strain. When the pain subsides, the muscles will heal stronger, and DOMS is less likely to occur with subsequent afflicting exercises. As with most health related issues, the best cure for DOMS is prevention. Even though DOMS can be a good sign that the muscles were worked hard, there are steps that can reduce the occurrence of this uncomfortable feeling. The most important factor in reducing DOMS is to go into a new exercise program
Your Goals Are Our Priority!
with plenty of rest and be well hydrated. Lack of sleep and dehydration make muscle damage more likely to occur, and recovery time takes longer. Studies have shown that sleep deprivation may be the number one cause of reported muscle pain. The use of compression garments during any high intensity activity that causes muscle jarring has been shown to be effective by supporting the muscle and reducing the likelihood of trauma due to undulations happening to the muscle with impact.
Sandpoint’s Only Full Size Warm Water Therapy Pool
Once DOMS has set in, there are a few remedies that can help speed up recovery: • Light exercise such as swimming or walking. Exercising the sore muscle is a very effective way to bring back blood flow and reduce pain and stiffness, aquatic exercise has the added relaxation and reducing inflammation. • Warm Epsom salt bath or magnesium supplement. Magnesium has been shown to be an effective muscle relaxer. • Ice is not effective, but heat is. The best approach is a contrast bath in which one alternates between hot and cold. This is very effective to bring blood flow into the muscles. • Natural supplements such as curcumin, tart cherry juice and omega 3 are known to be effective anti-inflammatories. • Modalities such as ultrasound and electro stimulation have been shown effective in some people. DOMS is not an injury and is a normal adaptation to working muscles. Don’t let the pain discourage activity; over time the body should adapt and the soreness should go away.

CONCUSSION AWARENESS AND TREATMENT KNOW THE SIGNS AND SEEK TREATMENT LOCALLY ARTICLE PROVIDED BY BONNER GENERAL HEALTH
NH OE TA A LW A YYS T O IBPV I O U S TH
A CONCUSSION IS A TYPE of traumatic injury to the soft tissue surrounding the brain that can be caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head, or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth. This fast movement can cause the brain to bounce around or twist in the skull, creating chemical changes in the brain and sometimes stretching and damaging the brain cells. Many people associate concussions with a direct strike to the head and do not identify they are suffering from a concussion because they do not recognize the symptoms. You don’t have to lose consciousness to have a concussion. Some people will have obvious symptoms of a concussion, such as passing out or forgetting what happened right before the injury, but other people will not. Many people do not associate the symptoms they are experiencing as a concussion, and therefore do not seek medical treatment. The most common symptoms of a concussion include: • • • • •
Headache Dizziness Trouble concentrating Confusion Sensitivity to light
• Nausea • Sleeping too much, or difficulty falling asleep Every state in the United States has enacted a “Return to Play” law pertaining to concussions and head injuries in youth athletes in junior high and high school. These laws vary from state to state, but all include a combination of the following requirements when an athlete has experienced a concussion: • Mandatory removal from play • Mandatory bench times • Required medical clearance to return to play • Required training/education for coaches, parents and athletes • Informed consent of parents and athletes. The increased emphasis on the importance of concussion awareness has resulted in more youth athletes reporting concussion symptoms to their coaches and parents. Many athletes are having baseline neurocognitive screenings done prior to starting sporting activities to identify their normal functioning brain activities prior to a concussion. This allows the athlete’s care provider to compare their

neurocognitive state following treatment for the concussion. The computer-based tests take about 25 minutes to complete. This screening evaluates verbal and visual memory, brain processing speed and reaction time in youths to establish baseline data when a player is in a non-concussed or “normal” state as part of a complete evaluation process to manage head injuries more accurately. This screening is offered locally at Performance Therapy Services at Bonner General Health. Most people fully recover from a concussion. Some people recover within a few hours, while other people may take a few weeks to recover and require therapeutic treatment. Children and teens take longer to recover and get back to their regular activities than adults because their brains are still growing and developing. Performance Therapy Services at Bonner General Health offers comprehensive postconcussion therapy uniquely tailored to each individual’s needs based on their symptoms. Concussion treatment begins with a thorough neurological evaluation that guides the development of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes components of physical and occupational therapy, which includes

assessments of patients’ headaches, cognitive levels, their vision and ability to perform activities of daily living. Other assessments include balance, gait and movement, and the presence of vertigo. After a concussion and while in therapy, patients may need to follow the guidelines below until their symptoms resolve: • No screen time, this includes smart phones, computers, tablets and TV • No driving • Take breaks frequently in a quiet environment • Utilize sunglasses, brimmed hats, and ear plugs if sensitive to light or noise • No contact sports or playground activities for at least 2-3 weeks • No caffeine if experiencing headaches • No alcohol, sedatives or medications that cause drowsiness If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of a concussion, contact your healthcare provider for an evaluation. Weddings can be as lavish or as simple as you’d like; what’s important is that it’s a special day for you and your spouse. Keeping things light and interesting is a sure bet in making memories. Giving the wedding traditions a bit of a twist will make your celebration unique– from the venue to the flowers and the sendoff. They’ll create a mood for your guests–and one to give them something to remember and look back on fondly. The trends this year are an eclectic collection of elegance and simplicity. Through the years, one can see how dresses have gone through a lifecycle of change–from simple to fairytale to anything goes. The styles for 2017 are still elegant but eclectic too. For years, the strapless gown ruled, but now you have off-the-shoulder short sleeves, quartersleeve and full. Styles look like they are a fusion of old and new. Think simple tops and long flowing skirts. Or, lacy long sleeves and sheer-to-the knee gowns. There is short and flirty and long and elegant–all with a beautiful, whimsical blend of fabrics–organza, lace and chiffon in all shades of white or for a newer twist, soft pastel colors. Top off your look with a lacy bolero over your shoulders or an oversized bow at the waist. There’s no reason you couldn’t find your dream dress from this year’s styles. The Locale (Venue) Brides and grooms are moving away from the traditional hotel reception to different venues in settings that lend themselves to a magical day. Decide your favorite locale–is it a beautiful garden? A large Victorian house? By the beach? An old farmhouse or restored barn? There’s a venue for each, so get creative! Having a big reception doesn’t mean you have to get a castle for your venue. Consider a local winery as each has its own personality and space for parties. The Menu Skip the steak and chicken and go for local

Is there a farm-to-table catering service? Have some fun designing food bars with tapas style appetizers, a taco bar or even pizza where guests serve themselves. Let them get up and mingle while enjoying healthy eats like fruit kabobs, artisan crostinis or vegetarian spring rolls. Have a table with a s’mores bar for everyone to assemble their own desserts or other smaller dessert offerings such as finger tarts or raspberry cups topped with fresh whipped cream. Guests will be entertained by the various choices, and it also eliminates the need for servers! The Cake Cakes are still often three-tiered beauties, but the décor is getting a makeover. Pastry chefs can make these memorable desserts look like gold, marble, watercolor, tree bark or stained glass. Or, go in reverse and have a naked cake encased in a clear glaze with the inner filling for show.
Top off the cake with some fresh blossoms for a rustic, whimsical look. Is that layered cake too much? Some couples keep it simple and use a regular-sized cake as the centerpiece for the tables. Either way, let the dessert be an edible sculpture to be revered! Photos and Film With the advancement of technology, there tends to come a point where we become nostalgic for “how it used to be.” The photography experts at the SLR Lounge say there is a current trend for the look of instant cameras from our past. Couples often still distribute them for guests to snap their own pics, but they now want that look professionally taken. Ask your photographer about mimicking this kind of film photography through the use of filters or special apps.

Couples are also asking for stylized portraits of the wedding party that make everyone look like a high fashion model. Another trend is incorporating photojournalistic techniques where the photographer acts like a director to stage a scene that appears candid such as of you and your friends getting ready before the ceremony. Don’t think it’s phony. Most of us aren’t used to acting natural in front of a camera, so don’t be afraid to take some direction–you’ll be happy with the outcome! When you’re interviewing photographers, see if they have experience with these trends. Similarly, with videography, there are a number of unique ways to memorialize the wedding. A wedding video can be shot in documentary style to tell a story of the event. Ask about how such a style can be done for you. You’ll be surprised at how discrete videographers can be so as not to be intrusive on the festivities. You can have a

The Festivities Dancing doesn’t have to be the only form of entertainment. The possibilities are endless when it comes to simple yet fun ways to keep guests entertained and making memories. Photo booths have been around for some time but now with the addition of a video booth where guests record a story, sing or give advice. As the party goes on, see the “other side” of your guests shine! Other ideas include having cartoonists and magicians–adult guests will enjoy them as much as any kid will. Treat your guests to a memento that they can take home or wow them with an entertainer that will send them home happy from a good party. Or, have a candy toss for the kids instead of the garter, give the bouquet to someone special instead of embarrassing shy girlfriends, set up a lawn bowling game outside for guests to play. Whatever you decide on, have fun giving your wedding a twist on a tradition. It will give you and your spouse something to smile about on your anniversary.

Rustic Interior Design
SandpointLivingLocal.com

By Patty Hutchens Design is so subjective. One person’s tastes doesn’t necessarily equal someone else’s. In the following pages there are a few ideas on how to incorporate an interior design strategy in your home that works for you. Sometimes all it takes is some visual inspiration to get the creative juices going. See where you end up! The journey can be just as exciting as the end result!

BARNWOOD HEADBOARDS Are you looking to incorporate a rustic look to your bedroom or living area? Think about adding barn wood to an entire accent wall to serve as a headboard. Looking to bring a touch of soft and natural colors to a bedroom? Construct a headboard made of a collection of varying colors of wood panels. Carry that rustic look into your living area by creating your mantel out of barn wood or surrounding your entire fireplace with it. Decorating with vintage wood, mixing and matching colors and grains, not only looks stylish but provides a comfortable, warm and inviting atmosphere!
TEXTURES When it comes to interior design, many of us think we need to match everything to have a cohesive and flowing feel to the room. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth! Having contrast in colors and textures provides multiple elements, which draws our interest to the room as a whole. But be sure to know when enough is enough. You do not want your senses to become overwhelmed, so striking a balance is important. For example, when mixing patterns, combine prints that are in the same color palette. Keeping your patterns to a maximum of four that are spread throughout the room is what most designers recommend.

Farm Kitchen Nothing says “welcome” more than a farmhouse-style kitchen. Typically designed with cooking spaces for large groups of people, this unpretentious design makes one feel comfortable and at home. With a focus on using natural materials, everything from the cabinets to the table and chairs are typically constructed of a quality hardwood. One popular characteristic of a farmhouse-style kitchen is the sink. With a large basin, the farmhouse sink makes cleaning large pots and pans a much easier task. When looking to accessories, plaid and gingham are popular for curtains, tablecloths, placemats and napkins when it comes to giving your kitchen a feeling of “being on the farm.”

Bold Lighting
When it comes to making a statement, oversized lighting has become increasingly popular. As a focal point when one enters a room, dramatic and oversized lighting is sure to not only capture the attention of those who see it, but it can also act as an artistic piece as well. If you want to make an immediate impression, the front entry is a place to be creative and bold. When choosing your oversized light fixture, also be sure to not overwhelm the space. One of the most popular spaces for introducing oversized lighting is the dining area. Large dome lights or drum pendants are some of the more popular choices. And remember, floor lamps can also provide a stunning option for your living area when seeking to make a bold statement. Changing the feel of a room does not have to be limited to paint and furniture; lighting is an inexpensive way to introduce a whole new look.
Exposed Brick
SandpointLivingLocal.com
68
What started out as a practical solution has turned into a popular decorating trend. Exposing the brick on walls first became popular as an alternative to repairing or replacing damaged plaster. Whether one leaves the brick in a natural color, paints them a solid color or adds a touch of color that matches or complements the other walls to provide a more contemporary look, exposed brick will add a unique look to your home. Also, by having a rough surface such as brick to hang your artwork, you can change your wall hangings often without worrying about patching holes in the wall.

Tin CEILING
Although it is a concept that began in the 1880s, tin ceilings are being used today to dress up one’s ceiling and create a unique look to one’s home. Unlike the decorative ceilings of 130 years ago that were made of steel and served as not only an aesthetic addition but also as fire protection, today most of the panels are constructed of 30-gauge, tin-plated steel that is only 1/100 of an inch thick. Costing anywhere from $2 to $17 per square foot, there is a vast array of styles and colors from which to choose.
Barn Doors When it comes to being creative with interior design, one area that is often overlooked and considered to be “standard” are our doors. But nowadays, sliding barn doors are making a statement in many homes. With limitless colors, textures and designs available, you can create a one-of-a-kind look. No matter what area of your home you are seeking to create a barrier, bedroom and bathroom or kitchen and dining area, you can do so with a sliding barn door and give your interior a dramatic and distinctive look at the same time.

n recent years the desire to live and entertain both indoors and outdoors simultaneously has gone beyond a design trend and has become more of an indoor-outdoor movement. Operable glass wall systems such as NanaWalls can turn indoor rooms into outdoor spaces instantly. Outdoor kitchens and expansive covered decks and patios are changing the way we live in our homes. Living in the Northwest
Outdoor entertaining requires more flexibility of use than other types of spaces. Here are some tips and tricks that can maximize your investment and create a space that makes you want to entertain. Define your goals: Your outdoor entertaining space may be a deck or patio, but don’t limit yourself. Almost any space that allows you to interact with nature’s landscape can really be ideal. How far you want to take your concept will depend on your creativity and your budget. It’s important to consider the end use of the space. Do you want a cozy lounge space for friends and family or do you entertain on a larger scale? Define your space: Your outdoor space should be an extension of your home. Furnishings and materials that resonate with your personal style are going to work best. Tip: Whenever you design a space, whether it’s interior or exterior, select three colors that work well together and repeat them. This will help you to avoid a chaotic color scheme. Choose outdoor furniture and fabric that reflects the style and color of your home’s interior. Include the garden or surrounding plants and landscaping, with both planters and fabric choices, into your overall design aesthetic. Use a variety of seating options: Stools and tables are a great opportunity to intermix different pieces and add visual interest.
SandpointLivingLocal.com
73
Furniture placement is key in creating comfortable conversation areas. Tip: You can anchor your outdoor entertaining space with any outdoor rug. Using plants can add texture, color and dimension to your space. You can be as creative as you like with interesting containers and even vertical gardens. Protecting your investment
fade-resistance, consider waterproof versus water resistance, resistance to mold and mildew and amount of maintenance required to clean your pieces. Also consider where you will store your pieces when they are not in use. Whether your goal is to lounge, entertain, dine or simply escape, with some creative planning and thoughtful design you can create a beautiful outdoor space that will not only provide a tranquil space for you and the family but the warm inviting environment for your outdoor summer parties.
While you may be tempted to repurpose indoor furniture for your outdoor space, remember woods that work best for outdoor use in our climate are teak, treated cedar and Ipe. Heat is the enemy of most wood tables designed for the interior, but humidity can cause furniture to delaminate or warp beyond repair. Make sure your pieces are intended for outdoor use. This is true if your outdoor space is covered or not. Fabrics should be rated for outdoor use. Consider UV exposure rating/

Raised Beds
Whether you consider yourself a gardener or not, raised beds can help you succeed in having a plentiful harvest. Here are just some of the advantages that gardening in raised beds offers: A higher quality of soil – A raised bed, as opposed to supplementing the soil in your yard, allows you the ability to plant your vegetables with the perfect soil blend, something that will go far to achieving a plentiful harvest. Less weed growth - Raised beds are typically planted more densely than those that are planted in the ground. This means there is less room for weeds to grow, and if they do find the space, they are easier to pull from soil in raised beds. More growth in less space – Whether you use succession planting or vertical supports, you are able to plant more food in a small space, resulting in an abundance of fresh vegetables.
Edible Landscapes Do you consider yourself more practical than creative? This is an opportunity for you to be both! Edible landscape techniques allow the integration of your plants into a decorative setting. Whether you plant herbs, seeds or berries, the result is not only beautiful but useful as well. A popular practice is utilizing onion and garlic chives as a perennial edging or border plant in an herb garden. Chives are part of the “lily” family and are grown in large part for their leaves and flowers. And the best part is they keep coming back year after year! When choosing a spot for the chives, keep in mind that they do best in full sun. When planting chives, start in early spring using soil that has much compost or a slow-release fertilizer. For best results, plant them 8 to 12 inches apart and use rich, well-drained soil. If you choose to grow your chives near peppers, there is the benefit of deterring insects. It is also said that it can improve the flavor and yields of nearby plants.

Living Fences Do you want to define the edge of your property, but not do so by constructing a fence? Live fencing is the perfect alternative and the benefits are many! Natural fences of trees, shrubs and flowering bushes can create a beautiful natural boundary to your property as well as provide privacy. So just how are these grown? One way is through a process called osculation. Begin by planting young trees or shrubs four to eight inches apart; this will depend upon the plant chosen and the height you would like it to grow. As the plants grow, tie the branches together. If your plants are close together you can even cross the branches that are not tied. The end result? A barrier that is closely interlocked that will continue to be stronger and more resistant each year. And the good news with natural fences is that should the roots of one of the plants die, the top will continue to grow as it receives support from the other plants with which it has intertwined.
Planter Walls Creating a vertical garden offers an opportunity to add color and vibrancy to your yard. All you need to start is a blank wall or a bare fence. Plant edibles, annuals and even perennials for a burst of color. If you don’t have a place to create your planter wall, a wood palette makes a perfect starting point to construct one, and you can gain inspiration simply by logging onto Pinterest. Or if you simply want to order one, there are “living walls” that can be custom made. A couple starting points include livinggreenplanters.com or your local garden store. You can even make your wall “portable” by placing a planter box on wheels and attach vertical lattice to provide a place for plants. This is a great option if you want to use your wall as a privacy barrier or move it around to optimize sun exposure. Whatever you choose, take the opportunity to be creative!

TRAVEL & LEISURE
National Parks PLANNING FOR A SECOND CENTURY
IN A COUNTRY SO VAST and full of resources, it would be easy to allow all-out development to encourage prosperity and wealth with little regard to the land. Thankfully, during and immediately following the Industrial Revolution and Gold Rush of the mid-1800s, leaders in our country realized the importance of the special places across the land. On March 1, 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed into law The Yellowstone National Park Protection Plan, creating the world’s first national park that is one of the most visited wild places in the country today. The bill reads in part “the headwaters of the Yellowstone River… is hereby reserved and withdrawn from settlement, occupancy or sale… and dedicated and set apart as a public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people.” This was to many a completely new concept, but as more travelers flocked to Yellowstone to experience its beauty and wonder, more began to understand the need to save and preserve special places across America.

Fast forward to today and the U.S. National Parks Service is responsible for maintaining 546 national parks, preserves, monuments, historical sites, memorials, battlefields, scenic lands and more. Created in August of 1916, the National Parks Service (NPS) just celebrated its centennial. The agency has grown tremendously as the number of sites and national parks have multiplied over the last century. Park service employees have the ever-changing task of encouraging visitors to these sites while keeping them maintained and in a natural and minimally disturbed state. Planning for the centennial celebration and setting goals for the next 100 years began back under the Bush Administration Centennial Initiative signed in 2006. For three years, the NPS took public comment through town hall discussions and feedback to hear what Americans wanted to see and experience in their National Parks system. Through an independent commission of science, education, conservation and civic engagement leaders, a plan of action was developed for the next 100 years.

It was determined that to connect people to parks in the next century, the NPS must: DEVELOP and nurture lifelong connections between the public and parks—especially for young people—through a continuum of engaging recreational, educational, volunteer and work experiences. CONNECT urban communities to parks, trails, waterways and community green spaces that give people access to fun outdoor experiences close to home. EXPAND the use of parks as places for healthy outdoor recreation that contributes to people’s physical, mental and social well-being.
The NPS has recently launched an updated marketing campaign called “Find Your Park” www.findyourpark.com. As the park service adapts an ever-changing culture of online communication and sharing, so has its online presence increased. An easy search application provides an outline of each site’s location, background and planning information for

your visit. You can browse by state or by park name, and with one click have all the information needed for your visit. Just like sharing through Instagram or Facebook, visitors to the national parks are invited to share their photos or stories to encourage others to visit their national parks system. While much of America is now seen as less active, spending more time in front of screens, and too busy to take a vacation, visitation numbers point out that many of us are dedicating time to experience these sites.
When park admission began being tracked in 1904, roughly 120,000 visitors passed through our national parks. By 1920, the number reached one million annual visitors. 1963 we cracked 100 million, and in 2015 there were more than 300 million visits to NPS managed parks and sites. Through its Find Your Park Campaign, the NPS gained 1.2 million followers on social media in 2016, sold $10 million worth of merchandise and saw $341 million donated towards the campaign. It’s evident that not only are many Americans deeply passionate about seeing these parks but

are more than willing to help keep them up and running through personal financial support. Living in the West, we are blessed to be near so many of these national treasures. In fact, during a weeklong road trip you might be surprised at how many parks you can experience in a short amount of time. The Big Three Traveling through Western Montana, you’ll experience some of the most beautiful open spaces in the country. Begin your trip in Glacier National Park, known as “The Crown Jewel of the Continent.” Here you’ll find ancient glaciers that have carved amazing peaks and mountain lakes into a stunning display. Traverse the Going to the Sun Road and explore miles of backcountry hiking. Travel about six hours south to West Yellowstone and be prepared to see other worldly landscapes. Geysers, hot pots, peaks and valleys dot the land, and many will spot deer, elk, bear and occasionally wolves on their trip. Log another 130 miles south into Wyoming, and you’ll be blown away by the Teton Mountain range in Grand Teton National
Park. Two hundred miles of trails await you in the park that’s equally beautiful but less visited. On a hot day, a float down the Snake River can’t be beat. Total Miles: 497 Seattle Loop Those that can get out of Seattle traffic will quickly find incredible national parks a short drive from each other. Just 100 miles northeast, you will find North Cascades National Park. Inside this park you’ll find everything from temperate rain forest, to glaciers, to dry ponderosa pine forests. With beautiful Lake Chelan included in this wilderness, there are ample opportunities for fishing or rafting, as well as easily accessible campground and hiking and biking trails. Another 100 miles west and you’ll end up in the San Juan Islands National Wildlife Preserve. For those who enjoy sailing or kayaking, this is one of the best places in the country. Whale watching tours are especially popular from April through September. Take a history lesson at the American Camp on the southern tip and the British Camp at the northern tip and

learn why we almost went to war over a pig. End your trip by traveling another 130 miles or so and camping inside Olympic National Park. Backpackers are drawn to the nearly one million acres that include everything from glacial capped peaks and old growth forests to 70 miles of coastline. There are 16 campgrounds inside the park, and several day hikes, making this a great park to visit with children. Total Miles: 330 Summer is almost upon us, and you’re probably in the midst of planning your annual summer vacation. Consider a visit to one or multiple national parks that are not far from our own backyard. These lands are owned by all of us and are set aside for our enjoyment and recreation. Being in nature calms the soul and unplugging as a couple or family can bring us all closer together. With another hundred-year plan in place by the National Parks Service, it is comforting to know that these special places will still be there for the enjoyment of generations to come.

HONEY - THE BENEFITS ARE MANY! WHILE USED BY MANY AS A NATURAL SWEETENER, the benefits of consuming honey can be much more than you realized. One of the most widely known benefits of honey is the relief it can give to those who suffer from allergies. Its anti-inflammatory effects is just one way it can help, but according to Dr. Matthew Brennecke, a board certified naturopathic doctor, honey performs like a natural vaccine. It contains small amounts of pollen that can trigger an immune response that produces antibodies to pollen. Another benefit to honey is the energy boost it can provide. With 17 grams of carbohydrates in each tablespoon, the natural unprocessed sugar enters the bloodstream and provides a quick boost in energy.
prevent cellular damage and can boost memory.
When we think of antioxidants, honey is not typically a food that comes to mind. But the fact is that it is full of antioxidants that can help
Other benefits of honey include acting as an antibiotic. Externally it can aid in treating wounds and burns and it can also act internally as a natural antibiotic.
A great source of vitamins C, K, B6 and folate, cabbage is not only a healthy vegetable to eat, but it has been used as a medicinal herb for centuries. While Ancient Greeks used the vegetable as a laxative, British soldiers took advantage of the cooling properties of the leaves to treat trench foot during World War I.
Honey has also been used to help those who suffer sleepless nights. Consuming honey can cause an increase in insulin and enable the body to release serotonin, a neurotransmitter that improves one’s mood. In turn serotonin is turned into melatonin, helping one sleep longer and better. What is raw honey? Raw honey is unpasteurized and differs in its filtration, something which issued to help extend the product’s shelf life. According to the National Honey Board, a tablespoon of raw honey has 64 calories and is free of fat, cholesterol and sodium.

ST. PATRICK’S DAY… When everyone is a little bit Irish By Patty Hutchens
EVERY YEAR ON MARCH 17 the Irish and the Irish-at-heart across the world observe St. Patrick’s Day. What began as a religious feast day for the patron saint of Ireland has become an international festival celebrating Irish culture with parades, dancing, special foods and a whole lot of green. St. Patrick’s Day is the day where everyone can claim to be a little bit Irish, and in North Idaho we like to celebrate our heritage in style! Looking for some fun and frivolity to kick off the festivities? Start off the celebration with the traditional St. Patrick’s Day parade in downtown Coeur d’Alene on Saturday, March 11. The parade will begin at 4pm with a Resort Pub Crawl to follow at 4:30pm. For those 21 years of age and above who complete the five stops along the pub crawl, you will receive a free Pint o’ Gold Keepsake Glass. For more information, go to www.cdadowntown.com. The following weekend, Sandpoint is the place to be as MickDuff ’s Beer Hall hosts a St. Patrick’s day celebration on Friday, March 17 featuring not only great beer but also live music with Devon Wade. Located in downtown Sandpoint at 220 Cedar Street, the crowd is sure to be entertained by this independent country music artist whose music has always been about real life. With both originals and classic covers, there is no better place to be than celebrating St. Patrick’s Day at MickDuff ’s and listening to great music. If you want to take things a bit further than just digging in your closet to find something green, you can find a bit of Irish flare at All Things Irish in downtown Coeur d’Alene. The store carries all the Irish and Celtic products you could dream of to help start your holiday off right. St. Patrick’s Day is your chance to get out and celebrate your heritage so be sure to come downtown and enjoy the many festivities that are offered. And remember—If you’re lucky enough to be Irish, you’re lucky enough!

VOTE!
EDUCATE YOURSELF BEFORE VOTING SUPPLEMENTAL LEVY VOTE IS MARCH 14 BY PATTY HUTCHENS ON MARCH 14, VOTERS WILL GO to the polls to vote on a supplemental levy to support our 3,700 students in the 12 schools across Bonner County. It seems there is much confusion as to the purpose of this levy, so here is an attempt to answer some questions. First, this levy has nothing to do with the plant facilities levy that was brought before the voters in August of last year. It is a replacement levy that will go to fund the operational costs of our schools—schools that have continued to thrive over the last several years. “Over the last five years, we have adjusted our practices significantly to reflect the feedback of our community. We have added full-day kindergarten options, increased experiential learning classrooms and created a Homeschool Academy,” said Lake Pend Oreille School Superintendent Shawn Woodward. “We have also continued to build on our pathways for students that better prepare them for both college and career options after high school. We have done this —without additional expense— with input and support of our community; a community that voted 70 percent to pass our last instructional levy.” While technically it is an operational levy, it is called a supplemental levy due to the fact it supplements the tax dollars allocated from the state budget.
been renewed by the voters every two years. Although the district qualifies for a permanent levy override, the Board of Trustees chose not to ask the voters for this. For many the primary question is, what will this cost? The answer in most cases is not even one dollar more per month than what you are already paying. Owners of a home with an assessed valuation of $250,000 with the homeowner’s exemption will see an increase to current school taxes of only 50 cents per month. Another question that is often raised is what will happen if the levy does not pass? If the levy is defeated, the result would have a ripple effect beyond the four walls of the schools. In addition to the over 300 people the district will be forced to lay off, schools would close and class sizes would likely be over 40 students each, and there would be double-shifts at the schools. People looking to move to our community will be deterred due to our school system’s lack of funding and those who live here may likely choose to move away. These are just some of the facts surrounding the upcoming levy. If you have additional questions, log onto http://www.lposd.org/boardof-trustees/supplemental-levy for more information or contact Superintendant Shawn Woodward or a member of the Board.
“In our case the levy accounts for approximately one-third of the overall operating budget of our school district,” said Woodward. The supplemental levy has been in place for the last 17 years and has
