I HAVE LIVED in the Northwest for nearly 15 years and am continually amazed at the beauty that surrounds us each and every day. My wife had family who lived in both Gig Harbor and North Idaho, and we visited from Southern California often. But after living in California for my entire life, it was time to make a move. With three young children, we packed up and began our new life in Sandpoint. I have not regretted a single thing about that life-changing decision. In less than a day we can be on the water overlooking beautiful Puget Sound, taking in a Mariner’s game and enjoying the freshest fish available. In North Idaho, we have amazing outdoor opportunities year round. With Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort literally in our own backyard, we can enjoy world-class skiing that offers breathtaking views. In the summer, we can hop on the boat and go to one of the many waterfront restaurants on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille. Coeur d’Alene is no different with Silver Mountain Ski Resort just a short drive away and Lake Coeur d’Alene beckoning on a beautiful day.

But there is much more to living in the Northwest than the opportunities for recreation. I am constantly blessed by meeting so many amazing people. The friendliness is unmatched, and it is an honor to meet all the small-business owners who we partner with to help them market their business. I have also had the opportunity to learn much about the nonprofit organizations and individuals who do so much to make the communities in which they live a better place. Yes, I am blessed to live in the Northwest. As for our kids, they were too young to remember much of San Diego. This is all they know, and they absolutely love it! And while many may complain about their in-laws, I only have high praise for mine. After all, they introduced me to paradise!

FEELING CRAMPED?
maximize your small space
BY ANNIE NYE, INTERIOR DESIGNER, SELKIRK GLASS & CABINETS, A DIVISION OF PONDERAY DESIGN CENTER
E
veryone has a space either in their home or office that is too small for their liking. Being able to maximize storage, keep it organized and create the illusion of a larger space are ideal. So, how do you maximize your small space and make it feel larger?
• • •
First of all, eliminate clutter. Clutter is only a distraction and makes you look disorganized and unkempt. Surfaces that are clean and well thought-out displays with limited things to trip over will make your space much larger.
•
Choose wisely. • Use bigger items that are necessities and forget trying to accessorize with smaller items. • Utilizing a small space with a few needed large-scale items provides good function (think large poster bed and nightstand), but aren’t distracted by small cluttered pieces (vase, end table, chair, etc). • Use neutral colors. • Walls look further away with neutral color tones instead of bringing colors closer to you with bold inyour-face brightness. • Choose even-toned paint colors such as taupes,
• Trick your eye into thinking the space is larger than it really is. • Create the illusion that that window goes from floor to ceiling by mounting curtains or blinds above where the window actually starts and allow it to expand all the way to the floor. • Use open furnishings like bookshelves, taller tables and skinnier items that aren’t bulky or boxy and take up a lot of surface area. • Strategically place mirrors so that light is cast in many
SandpointLivingLocal.com
directions, making the room appear brighter and more open than it really is. Use items that have multiple purposes. Things like murphy beds or sleeper sofas allow an office to become a guest room with little or no re-arranging. Hassocks, ottomans or cubes can double as coffee tables, side tables or additional seating when needed. Floor lamps instead of table lamps allow additional counter space.

Eliminate clutter! tans, creams or light greens, blues or grays. Avoid oranges, reds or any bright patterns on wall surfaces. Maximize storage space. • Utilizing wall space for storage with bookshelves or even customized closed shelving units frees up floor space so you don’t lose much-needed square footage. • When they are part of the wall, you don’t feel like things are cluttered either because they are out of the way.
• Using stripes to create the illusion of length in a space will also help draw your eyes upward and make the space feel more expansive. If you can accomplish most of these things, your space will be bigger in no time. If you don’t have a lot of money to work with, that’s easy. Simply by de-cluttering, organizing the space and if you can eliminate the closed-in feeling by painting, that’s a great start. Then as you can afford it, replace bulky, underutilized items with more efficient ones.
Utilize vertical elements. • Using vertical to your advantage will help elongate the space. Think tall storage units that take advantage of the whole floor-to-ceiling area. Don’t waste that space between your countertop and the wall cabinets if you don’t need the counter surface.

ot all investments are created equal. Some are better suited for shortterm goals, while others can help you build resources for objectives far in the future. As an investor, then, one of your biggest challenges will be to match your short- and long-term goals with the appropriate investment vehicles. How should you proceed? For starters, identify your short- and long-term goals. Your shorter-term goals will change throughout your life. When you are starting out in your career, for example, you might aspire to purchase a home in the next three to five years. Later on, though, your biggest short-term objective might be to save enough money for a long tour of Europe—without racking up credit card debt. As for long-term goals, your biggest one likely will be to enjoy a comfortable retirement. But you may well have other long-term plans, too, such as sending your kids to college in 10 or 15 years. After you have a clear sense of your shortand long-term goals, you can choose the right investments to help you meet them. Let’s start with the shorter-term ones. When you’re saving for a down payment on a home or for an expensive European vacation, you want to make sure that a certain amount of money will be available to you at a certain time. Consequently, you may want to avoid stocks or stock-based vehicles, which will constantly fluctuate in price, because you don’t want the value of your investment to be down at the moment you need the money. Instead, for short-term goals, you may want to consider a fixed-income vehicle, such as a bond, which is designed to provide
SandpointLivingLocal.com
26
regular interest payments and return your full principal upon the bond’s maturity (providing the issuer doesn’t default, which, with investment-grade bonds, is generally unlikely). For longer-term goals, such as college for your kids and a comfortable retirement for yourself, it’s a different story. To achieve these goals—and especially for retirement—you generally need to accumulate as much as you can. As a result, you need investments with growth potential, which means you will need to consider stocks and stock-based instruments. As mentioned above, stocks will always fluctuate in value, and they may be worth more or less than your original investment when sold. However, building a portfolio with an investment mix that’s appropriate for your risk tolerance, and that contains a reasonable amount of growthoriented vehicles, can potentially help you overcome short-term volatility and continue making progress toward your long-term goals. Plus, you have some attractive long-term options available. With a 529 college savings plan, you can save for college and possibly achieve tax benefits, too. And by contributing regularly to your IRA and 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored plan, you can defer taxes while spreading your dollars among a wide range of investments. But there’s one thing all long-term investments have in common: You need patience and discipline to stick with them. So, there you have some ideas on short- and long-term investing. Keeping this distinction in mind when you invest can help boost your confidence that you’re making appropriate moves for all your goals.
TEACHER OF THE MONTH Cody Spencer BY PATTY HUTCHENS

n her first year of teaching at Hope Elementary School, Cody Spencer has already made an impact on her class of 24 students that range from fourth through the sixth grade. Not only that, but she teaches all elementary school subjects to all three grades. “Teaching multi-age classes is not easy,” said Hope Elementary School Principal Sherri Hatley. “Cody genuinely cares about all her students and is all about improvement and growth and opportunities to learn.” In her fourth year as a teacher, Cody said what she enjoys most is helping students to grow and learn. One of the highlights of her career so far was “finding the amazing
educational culture of Hope Elementary.” Hatley said that one thing that she is impressed with is the way Cody jumps in and takes initiative. “She is enthusiastic about student learning and is taking the lead on Interim Block Assessments at Hope School,” said Hatley. “She owns her students—their learning and their behavior.” In her role as a teacher and a role model, Cody said if there is one thing she hopes her students take away from her is to never stop learning and looking for knowledge. “Knowledge is power. Be powerful,” said Cody.

GETTING A CAT TO USE THE LITTER BOX
BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL, SANDPOINT
C
at house-soiling problems, most commonly called inappropriate elimination behaviors, are not only common but tremendously frustrating. It would be hard to think of anything more irritating than urine and feces in/on something other than the cat box. In many cases, cat-box errors can lead straight to the shelter. Fortunately, most of these problems are easily solved when pet parents look at life through a cat’s point of view, make a few changes and remain patient. The first step in getting a cat to use the litter box is to figure out why he/ she’s not! House soiling happens because the cat’s medical, physical or social needs are not being met. Medical problems include diseases like bladder or kidney infection, stone formation, diabetes and idiopathic cystitis. These conditions give cats a “sense of urgency” and often are downright painful. If your kitty checks out normally after a medical examination, pay attention to his/her physical needs: litter type, box cleanliness and location. Cats are fastidious and particular; different
SandpointLivingLocal.com
litter texture, smell or a poop-filled box can make a feline cranky! Place the box away from food, water, other cat’s boxes and in a place where he can access it safely. Oftentimes, cats are not the best of friends, and pet parents need to respect their need to exist and eliminate in privacy! Use enzymatic odor neutralizers in the “mistake” areas, try covering them with foil, plastic carpet runners or sheeting and block it off for a few weeks. The American Association of Feline Practitioners touts 5 Pillars of a healthy environment (AAFP guidelines, 2014). These tips will help keep the “pees” in your kitty’s box (and peace in the household): 1. Provide a safe place where he/she can withdraw if threatened. 2. Provide multiple and separated food, water, scratching, play, resting and toileting areas without being challenged by other cats. This decreases competition for resources in multi-cat houses.
28
The first step in getting a cat to use the litter box is to figure out why he/she’s not!
3. Provide enrichment, opportunity for play and predatory behavior. Boredom stresses cats! 4. Provide positive, consistent and predictable human-cat social interaction. Figure out what your cat needs and deliver this to the best of your ability. 5. Provide an environment that respects the importance of the cat’s sense of smell. Cats use this to evaluate their surroundings, their sense of safety and comfort. Avoid smelly things (detergents, medications, foods) that compete with this to avoid problem behaviors.

Annual Easter Egg Hunt set for March 31
THE HUNT
is on
BY PATTY HUTCHENS
ith all the snow that has recently fallen in North Idaho, the hope is that it will all be gone by March 31 when the Easter Bunny arrives in Sandpoint for the annual Easter Egg Hunt in Lakeview Park.

The group plans for 3,000 eggs, working hard from 7:30 to 10am on the Saturday before Easter Sunday. “It’s all over in about five minutes,” said Dull. For the last couple of years they have been hiding candyfilled plastic eggs, so that takes extra time to fill those in the days leading up to the event.
Hosted by the Sandpoint Lions Club for the past several decades, children are invited to meet at the Lion’s Den, 607 South Ella, on March 31 for a fun adventure across the park as they search for an assortment of beautifully colored eggs.
“We have separate age group areas set up from crawlers to age 12, so when the horn signals, they take off running,” said Dull. “Most kids bring back at least six eggs a piece. We also hide gold eggs that they can turn in for a prize of a dollar if they find them.”
June Dull of the Sandpoint Lions’ Club stated that according to their oldest member, the Easter Egg Hunt was going on when he joined in 1971.
Organizers ask parents to please stay outside the boundaries to help avoid added congestion. The event will start at 10am sharp on Saturday, March 31, and the search goes rather fast so be sure to get there early so your little one has a chance to join the chase!
“At that time they were hiding Huckleberry Crème Eggs,” said Dull. “Before that he said he thought they were hiding boiled eggs, maybe even in the mid-60s. So this has been happening for a long time, as are all things with the Lions Club here in Sandpoint.”

UNCOVERING LOCAL TALENT THE TALENT OF BRI WILLIAMS R.N., OWNER/FOUNDER OF REFINED AESTHETICS MED SPA
THE VALUE OF RELATIONSHIP
BY RONALD DENOVA @RONALDDENOVA • PHOTO BY JANEL GION
“I
f you look your best, you feel your best. If you feel your best, you do your best.” A quote Bri Williams has lived by. Bri is the owner and founder of Refined Aesthetics Med Spa, located in Downtown Sandpoint in the legendary Belwood Building. I recently met up with Bri at a local Sandpoint coffee shop (Kokanee), along with her twin sister Brissa Peterson. Within just a few moments, these fourth-generation Sandpoint natives conveyed how incredibly passionate they are about their hometown, their respective work environments and especially their family life. As the sisters sat across from one another, I sat in amazement as each would compliment the other and in typical “twin” fashion they would easily finish a thought or sentence started by the other. It was delightful to listen as the two shared where Sandpoint has been and the many positives of where Sandpoint is going through this resilient community. Later, I caught up with Bri at the Med Spa to find out more about her and the professional services offered. Bri currently splits time between the Med Spa and Family Health Center as a registered nurse. Bri has also spent time with Bonner General Health in the Medical/Surgical floor, at Sacred Heart in nephrology (kidney function) and at North Idaho Advanced Care Hospital in the Intensive Care Unit ever since receiving her diploma from Oregon Health and Science University in 2007. Leading with vast credentials can bring confidence and comfort to many exploring the world of aesthetics. Additionally, all clients who wish to receive treatments go through a rigorous proposal by Bri, which is reviewed by a nurse practitioner prior to any medical care as required by the Governance of the State. The practice fully embraces the regulations to deliver high-end, medical-grade services that are very
private as clients seek full anonymity to their health history. The Med Spa is chic, incredibly clean and private. Clients looking for medical-grade aesthetics will be greeted by the talented owner—no waiting room! Bri shared that clients appreciate the private nature of the Med Spa and that her approach is focused on the internal emotions of the client, “helping them to feel their best, so they can do their best.” The Med Spa is building a reputation that brings out natural beauty through a safe and subtle approach. She finds most clients appreciate this conservative approach to “enhance the natural features already within the client.” Although she has been approached to do some “Kardashian” lips, she politely resists while educating the prospect on how to feel beautiful from within themselves. Bri quickly recognized my novice nature in aesthetics and began to educate me on the various treatments and the positive outcomes. One example is that clients tend to use less makeup after treatments as there is no need to cover up an area that felt deficient to the client. Less makeup tends to promote healthier skin. Bri’s clients have expressed gratitude for how these treatments have positively changed their lives. One client was known as the “angry lady” as she had a scowl in her brow area her entire life. The treatments, over time, allowed the brow to relax, therefore removing the scowl showing her peaceful personality. The practice will be conducting various educational seminars throughout the year. For additional information, check out the Refined Aesthetics Med Spa Facebook page. All I can say is...Wow! A fantastic service provided by an exceptional human being! Bri Williams, your talent has been uncovered!

hen your passion becomes your life’s work, you find that you are full of energy and blessed to go to work each and every day. That is precisely how Corey Obenauer feels, and it is evident the moment you meet him. Owner of Burl Wood Dreams, a gallery of wood and metal creations at 201 North First Avenue in Sandpoint, Corey is passionate about bringing beautiful wood to life. “Ninety-eight percent of the wood I use is from the Northwest,” says Corey, who works with several varieties of maple and also pine, black walnut, redwood, juniper—including Western and other varieties—and myrtle wood. His store is filled with exquisite handcrafted pieces showcasing a multitude of items such as rocking chairs, clocks, lighthouses, wine holders, pub tables, walking sticks, benches, coffee tables and much more. He will also design that special piece just for you. Corey’s craftsmanship in “live edge” furniture maintains the character and natural characteristics of the wood. “I don’t square off any of the edges,” he says, describing the natural flow of the wood in each of the furniture pieces he creates. As a fabricator and welder for more than 20 years, Corey has the unique

ability to create pieces using steel and aluminum and also works with local metal artisans. In addition, he purchases and accepts consignments from several artists, both locally and nationally. “I highly value the artistic ability of both local and other artists to create beautiful pieces to accent and highlight the pieces at Burl Wood Dreams,” Corey says. Corey discovered his passion as a woodworker after working for 20 years as a welder. He had also worked as a contractor on many large projects while living in Billings, Montana, and decided to open his own gallery, which he built. But when his father became ill in 2013, Corey decided to pack it all up and move to Sandpoint to be closer to him and his mother. After his father passed away, his mother passed within a month. Joining Corey in Sandpoint is the woman who is now his wife, Kimberly. Together they have made Sandpoint their home where they are raising their 18-month-old son. “He is the CEO in charge of operations,” jokes Corey about the boy who is clearly one of the lights of his life in addition to his 10-year-old son from a previous marriage. Corey had several mentors in the woodworking field along the way. They encouraged him and recognized his natural talent. But it was not just those mentors who saw the fine craftsmanship. Corey has had pieces showcased at the National Art Show in Denver and the Safari Club International Art Show in Las Vegas.
SandpointLivingLocal.com
“Kimberly also drove me and encouraged me to follow my passion,” says Corey, who cannot say enough about the love of his life. “I could not do what I do without her. She is the reason I breathe. She is my rock and is the diamond in my life. If it weren’t for her love and constant support, I would not be where I am today.” As owner of Burl Wood Dreams, Corey says he takes pride in not only his work but also his new hometown. He spends a lot of time at his downtown store and helps maintain the area in front of not only his store but adjacent storefronts as well. “Sandpoint is one of the few little corners of the world where you can enjoy the beauty, and it’s a great place to raise kids. We need to keep it looking nice,” he says. Since opening August 1, 2017, Corey has enjoyed visiting with customers who come from near and far. The repeat business he has already encountered speaks to not only the craftsmanship but the pricing as well. Be sure to stop in and visit Corey at Burl Wood Dreams. You may not only leave with a beautiful handcrafted piece of art, but I guarantee you will make a new friend as well.

Scott Fitchett plays important role in lives of young people “I don’t want to ‘wow’ kids with programming or play on their emotions. I want them to develop a deep-seated faith that guides every aspect of their lives.”
BY PATTY HUTCHENS
E
aster season is here. It is a time of hope and renewal as Christians around the world rejoice, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ. But the world doesn’t always feel hopeful for many, especially our youth who struggle with many issues. But thanks to those in our community who are invested in our children, there is a path to learning more about God, religion and hope. Scott Fitchett is a teacher at Sandpoint High School as well as the youth pastor at Cedar Hills Church in Sandpoint. He enjoys working with the younger generation in many capacities and finds his dual career fulfilling. “The statistics are scary when it comes to young people and the church. I don’t have a huge formula or a program [to bring them into the church], but what I do want to instill in young people is a firm belief in the truth,” said Fitchett. “Since the late enlightenment period in Western civilization, there has been an ever-widening gap between ‘facts’ and ‘values’ to the point where we have lost the idea of it even being possible for there to be objective truth about values. One of the things I want young

believers to realize is that when they are committing to Jesus, they are committing to a worldview that believes in objective truth. I don’t want to ‘wow’ kids with programming or play on their emotions. I want them to develop a deep-seated faith that guides every aspect of their lives.” As adults, we all know the younger generation can change paths quickly. After all, we were once there ourselves. Whether it is the career they choose or the group they associate with, it is a time when even little decisions can have a lifelong impact—either positive or negative. Fitchett was raised in Sandpoint, and his father and grandfather were both in the timber industry. “I always thought I would be a logger and hunting guide, but my senior year of high school my parents told me it was their dream for me to go to college, so I decided to give them a year,” said Fitchett. “I filled out an application to Corban University because my uncle paid me $50 to fill it out. In August, my parents were dropping me off there. They still joke that if I would have had a car I would have beat them home.” The faculty asked him what he wanted to major in. “I said it didn’t matter because I was

only going to be there a year,” said Fitchett. “They then asked what I was interested in and I said ‘pastoral ministry and history.’ Long story short, they said it is easier to go from teaching to preaching than preaching to teaching, so they made me an education major and 15 years later I am still in education.”
“They represent at least five different churches in town, agnostics, atheists, high and low socio-economic status, athletes and academics—it’s a very diverse group,” said Fitchett of the eclectic backgrounds. “Watching them challenge each other and discuss the most important questions of life together has been special. They are all really inspiring.”
But it was not until recently that Fitchett decided to also pursue his passion of pastoral ministry.
As a teacher, youth pastor and former coach, Fitchett appreciates the fact that he is a role model to many and can provide a lot of guidance. When asked what one life lesson he would like kids to take away from their teenage years, he responded, “Don’t be afraid of failure. Be very afraid of succeeding at something that doesn’t matter. It can be attributed to a lot of people, but DL Moody is who I first heard it attributed to.”
“When my wife Sage and I moved back to Sandpoint in 2013, part of the vision was leading the baseball program,” said Fitchett. “However, after a few years I was having what I call an existential crisis about the way we do youth athletics in our culture and wasn’t sure it was where God wanted me to be.” It was then that his friend Natasha Albertson called him about the Cedar Hills Church job. “I laughed at her, saying there was no way I could do that. But after exploring it and meeting Chase Tigert, who is now the head baseball coach at Sandpoint High School, I knew it was a move God had set in motion.” Teaching part time at SHS and working with the youth in the community through his position as youth pastor at Cedar Hills Church has been nothing short of fulfilling. Fitchett shares that he has been meeting with a group of young people for about 18 months, and it has been amazing to be a part of their journey.
SandpointLivingLocal.com
With the Easter season here, Fitchett said there are activities that he invites all youth to, and you don’t have to be a member of Cedar Hills Church to attend. “Right before Easter we will have a pool party focused on the idea of baptism,” said Fitchett. “There has also been some discussion of possibly having the students run a gathering at Cedar Hills. It should be a lot of fun.” If anyone is interested in learning more about the youth program or would like to help out, please contact Scott Fitchett at scott@cedarhillschurch.com or call him at 208.610.4721.

or those who never have met Hunter Jacobson, they have likely heard his name. The young Sandpoint High School freshman was critically injured in an accident on December 2. Since that time, he lies in a coma in a Spokane hospital with family and friends keeping a constant vigil by his bedside while the community rallies around him to do all they can to support his recovery. “Improvements have been small but encouraging. His eyes are open, and he will watch and follow those around him with his eyes,” said Hunter’s dad, Bob Jacobson. “He is breathing on his own and is moving all of his limbs, but he is still considered in a conscious coma.”
Outfitted in full, top-of-the-line riding gear, Hunter was riding his dirt bike when he experienced the serious accident. “He was riding with a friend, Nick Stangel, in Naples at the designated riding area,” said Bob, who went on to explain that Hunter had received a new bike in October and was preparing for an upcoming race in Kalispell. “No one saw the accident so we are not sure exactly what happened. All we know is that he went off a jump and did not land well. We are not sure how he hit his head but he has a severe TBI [traumatic brain injury].” With Life Flight not an option due to the weather, Hunter was transported to Kootenai

Medical Center where he was diagnosed with critical head trauma, a ruptured spleen, 11 broken ribs, a broken collarbone, broken scapula and a collapsed lung. After the medical team at Kootenai Medical Center removed his spleen, Hunter was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane. With pressure increasing in Hunter’s brain, the doctors at Sacred Heart removed the left side of Hunter’s skull as well as a small portion of his brain to relieve the pressure. Nearly three months after the accident and showing signs of improvement, the future for Hunter is still uncertain as his body tries to repair itself from the trauma of the accident. But there is hope. Hunter was recently transported on a medically-equipped fixed wing airplane

to Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska where they specialize in TBI for pediatrics. “He has been doing well the past couple of weeks, and we are anxious to get him going with rehab,” said Bob in a recent update, adding that Hunter is still considered to be in a coma. When asked to describe his son in one word, Bob responded, “Adventurous.” In addition to being a very outgoing and athletic young man, Hunter has always shown a lot of natural talent when it comes to sports. Bob said his son is involved in many activities including baseball, football, basketball and motorcycle racing. But it was during Hunter’s seventh and eighth grade years when his true passion turned to racing.
“4-H was starting a new motorcycle club (BC Trailblazers), and he was really excited about being part of that and being the team leader for it,” said Bob. “He also loves to hunt. He has been able to hunt for the past two years and has harvested his elk and deer both years. He still planned on playing baseball but had set aside football and basketball for more track time at the motocross track. He had a very successful summer racing. … He loves to race.” Although Hunter has medical insurance, there are expenses that continue to mount each and every day. Described by friends as a wonderfully kind family and Hunter as “an insanely rad and bright

young man,” the Jacobsons are grateful for all the support they have received over the last few months. “[The support has been] unbelievably overwhelming. ‘Thank you’ can’t begin to express our gratitude,” said Bob. “It shows you what kind of community we live in and the character of the people who live here.” He said the support to him and his family, including Hunter’s mom April and their other two sons, Tanner (a 2015 graduate of SHS) and Walker (a 2017 SHS graduate), has been amazing. “Everyone, including family, friends, the entire community, my co-workers and the hospital staff, has been so supportive,” said Bob.
To help with costs not covered by insurance, and there are many, there is GoFundMe account set up with a goal of raising $10,000 that has already reached nearly $8,000. Recently, Jalapeno’s Mexican Restaurant hosted an evening, Dine Out For a Cause, which raised just short of $6,000 for the Jacobson family.
“We have had several donations coming in already, and they are awesome!” said Carmen. Some of the items include: two season passes to the Festival at Sandpoint, a beach cruiser from Super 1 Foods, a 6-foot sub from Mr. Sub and a three-night stay at the Idaho Club, which includes three rounds of golf for four donated by Go Sandpoint – Vacation Home Specialists.
A large portion of the money raised that evening was due to the efforts of Hunter’s close friends, Eli Daugherty, Zander Moore and Zac Kohal, who passed out bracelets and stickers in exchange for donations. It was a wonderful example of how the youth in the community have come together to help their friend.
It will be a time to not only provide support to the Jacobson family but also one another as the community holds onto hope that this much-loved young man will soon return to his passion of living life to the fullest—and for those who know Hunter, there is no doubt he will be OK.
And there are even more opportunities to show support for Hunter and his family. Mark your calendars for March 31, as you do not want to miss the Hunter Jacobson Benefit. The event is an opportunity for the community to come together and support Hunter while also enjoying a wonderful catered dinner, wine and beer, music, dancing, and live and silent auctions. It has been in the planning for several weeks, and organizers are thrilled with the response received. “People are contacting us all the time to ask how they can help,” said Carmen Daugherty, a member of the committee and a longtime friend of the Jacobson family.
“Hunter likes to joke around with people and pull practical jokes,” said Bob about his youngest son. “He’s also stubborn and has a mind of his own.” It is that tenacity that Bob and others pray will pull Hunter through this. Steve Russo, a longtime friend of the family, agrees. “Hunter is one of those kids that can do anything he sets his mind to, whether it is football, baseball, basketball or motocross; he just excels at anything he gets involved with,” said Steve. “Some may overlook him because he is a humble, respectful kid and wise beyond his years, but under that, Hunter is a competitor and a fighter!”
With music from the extremely popular Miah Kohal Band and a kids’ bar where they can prepare their own concoctions, there will be something for everyone!

ATHLETES OF CODY SHEPHERD & CAELAN DARLING BY PATTY HUTCHENS

Four years ago, she suffered a severe break of her leg—an open, double-compound fracture—while riding a dirt bike. “I had to have surgery, which resulted in me having to have a metal plate that runs the full length of my lower shin,” said Cody. “Because of this, I was in a non-weight bearing cast for three months and have had to work extra hard to get the strength back in that leg. Today, I still have to wear a knee brace on that side but can pretty much do everything I did before.” That perseverance has paid off. Cody is in her second year on the Sandpoint High School dance team and also serves as the captain. In addition, she is an honor student and is a certified nursing assistant, a career path she intends to follow. “I am starting at Lewis-Clark State College in the

fall and am studying to get my bachelor of science in nursing,” said Cody. “Sadly, LCSC does not have dance team at the moment, but I will be in their dance club that they are working on turning into an actual team.” Cody eventually hopes to work in an emergency room as a nurse. “I currently am a CNA, and through clinicals I learned that the ER was my favorite place to work because you never know what’s going to come in and it’s something new every day.” Cody will take what she has learned from dance and apply it to her life going forward. “My coach has taught me that to be successful, you have to be determined and a hard worker. She always sets goals for us and has pushed me to be my best.”

Caelan Darling With a 3.0 GPA, a part-time job and dedicating his time to cheer, Caelan Darling is kept very busy. But he wouldn’t trade it for anything. He said he enjoys traveling with the team to competitions and likes being on a team with mostly girls.
Proud Supporter of Area Athletics!
“It’s way different than being on a football team with all guys,” said Caelan. He said his biggest challenge in sports has been dealing with a leg injury that has hindered him for several years. “I’ve had knee pain for five years from breaking my leg through the growth plate,” said Caelan. “It’s been a challenge for me to go through it and persevere through it.”
Deliveries Available
Through all the ups and downs, Caelan has learned the importance of perseverance. “One lesson I’ve learned is to never give up and that practice makes perfect,” he said.
He still remains undecided about the future but is exploring his many options. He has been asked by University of Idaho to try out for their cheer team. “My other options are going into the coast guard or the police force,” said Caelan, who adds that he would like to work for Idaho Fish and Game. “It involves law enforcement and I would be outdoors most of the time.”

ANNOUNCING SANDPOINT’S FINEST! WINNERS ANNOUNCED AT MARCH 2 EVENT
BY PATTY HUTCHENS
T
here is no doubt that Sandpoint is home to many wonderful businesses and organizations. All one has to do is wander through our locally owned businesses and visit with store and restaurant owners in our area to know they are passionate about their work and their community. Sandpoint Living Local is no different. Each month we love to share the stories of your friends and neighbors who are making a difference in the lives around them. We are also humbled by the support the community provides us through reading our stories and choosing our publication to market and brand their business. So it has been with great enthusiasm over the last few months that we have invited members of the community to vote online for “Sandpoint’s Finest” in a multitude of categories. The response was overwhelming! At the beginning of February we announced the top three in each category and opened up voting again for people
to vote for “the finest” out of the top three in each category. The voting culminated with a red carpet event held on March 2 at the Heartwood Center in Sandpoint. With entertainment provided by Devon Wade and proceeds going to CASA of North Idaho, the event was a huge hit. The winners in each of the 30 categories were announced and presented with an award. Thank you to all who took the time to vote, attend the event and to help Sandpoint Living Local celebrate Sandpoint’s Finest. And to all the businesses, organizations and people who make this town what it is, a heartfelt “thank you” from those at Sandpoint Living Local. It is a blessing to live in a town such as this among community members like you.

or nearly a decade, Montana Specialty Log Construction owners Nelson and Sarah Troyer have been serving Montana and Idaho residents, specializing in custom builds, log home restoration and log home maintenance.
“We, as a company, specialize in taking on the projects that are challenging ‘with a smile,’ says Nelson. “We find great delight in problem solving! As a custom home builder, we really enjoy working directly with our customers and helping them accomplish their dreams.” Whether it’s a grand log lodge or simply a trapper’s cabin, they craft each project with great pride and skill, which, according to Nelson, is becoming a lost art. “We also find a great need for restoration of older log homes that just need a little TLC. We put special love and care into each project and put our whole heart into each beloved home,” he says. Born in Libby, Montana, Nelson moved with his family to Michigan, where he grew up learning the art of log home construction and remodels under his father’s guidance in their family log business. Nelson says he’s been blessed and attributes the success of Montana Specialty Log Construction to his father, whom he said was a very patient man while teaching him the trade.

Nelson moved back ‘home’ as a young man to begin a new life. “I really like this area of the [country]. I feel close to God here and love the community atmosphere,” he says. “My goal is to be an influential person in our community and to encourage a positive ‘can do’ attitude, not only in the workplace, but in our community as well.” When it comes to what Nelson and Sarah find most rewarding in the work they do, it is threefold. First, seeing a beautiful piece of art emerge from a pile of logs is truly fulfilling to the couple. “It is amazing to see a log from the forest, that would have been either burnt or left to rot into the ground, become a long-lasting beauty,” states Nelson. “Secondly, to see an old, thirsty and desolate log home become rejuvenated, restored and shining like a diamond! And, of course, the best part of this transformation is to see the smiles on the owners’ faces!” In addition to their log home services they offer, the MSLC family is starting a Youth Ranch—Silver Lining Youth Ranch. Currently, they hold a one-week summer camp, bringing local boys into camp to instill life principles through Equine Assisted Learning and wholesome fun and adventure. According to Nelson, “By 2021, we would like to have a nonprofit program in place that is a residential, ranch-style, therapeutic youth ranch where kids and families can come to a safe, empowering place where they can find hope; a place

they can learn and experience the joy and satisfaction in good old-fashioned hard work.” Nelson, Sarah and the MSLC team are also involved in the Lil’ Fighters Fall Festival in Noxon, Montana. Each fall, the event features an action-packed day of fun with pig wrestling, wheelbarrow and gunny sack races, donuteating contest, tug of war, tasty home cooking , live auction and more, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to help a local family in need who’s child has been diagnosed with a devastating illness. “We want them to know that they are not alone in their fight for life; that our family and families represented at MSLC, as well as the local community, are standing behind them,” Nelson says. If you are in the market to build your dream log estate or that little log cabin in the woods, or bring your current log home back to life, there’s no doubt that Nelson, Sarah and the rest of the Montana Specialty Log Construction family will bring your vision to reality.

What’s in a Number?
Focus on how you feel and look; not what the scale says “YOU’VE PROBABLY HEARD another iteration of this story before, but my ear is to the ground, and the moral of the story doesn’t seem to be sticking, so I’m going to tell you my version here. The other night, I had a conversation with a client about her progress. It’s a conversation I’ve had hundreds of times. In the six months that she has been working with me, she has completely and utterly transformed herself. She’s stronger, faster, more confident and has much less body fat. In addition, she carries herself with more confidence and has a presence about her that she knows that she can do whatever she puts

her mind to. If you asked me, I’d say that her journey has been a rousing success. In fact, I’d imagine that she would agree 90 percent with that opinion. What’s the last 10 percent? That silly scale. Though her clothes are fitting better, she is visibly leaner and more defined, the number on the scale hasn’t really changed that much. Now, I understand it (as much as a 33-year-old male can understand the lifelong relationship with the scale that women are faced with). When you’ve

spent your life determining your health by a number, if that number isn’t what you want it to be, or what you think it should be, it makes it seem fairly black and white. Unfortunately, when there are a million other markers that are telling you the opposite of the scale, you need to trust those numbers and just throw the darn thing away. At what point does it not matter? If you look better, feel better and perform better, does that number still matter? Do you advertise that number to employers, friends, spouse or potential suitors? (I literally have no idea what my wife weighs. I know she’s physically fit though!) If you can identify 20 markers of progress, and you’re hitting 19 of all 20, but you put so much weight on the one that it completely depresses and unmotivates you, you should recognize that something isn’t valid about that one number. To take it a step further, what if the opposite were true?
miserable? Would you make that deal with the devil? Sadly, I imagine that answer isn’t as obvious as it should be on the surface. So, what’s the answer? Well, if we can agree that it’s far too simple of a solution to say to just not care about what the scale says, then we just need to abstain from it altogether.

Just get rid of the scale and refuse to get on another one—period. If your doctor asks you to, tell him/her, “No.” If you absolutely have to for health insurance or other purposes, cover your eyes and put your fingers in your ears. There’s nothing that number will tell you that other things cannot. Take your psyche back and take control of how you feel about yourself. Move better, feel better, look better and be more confident. That success will breed more success, and you’ll stay motivated by how you feel rather than respecting the opinion of three integers.
What if you were able to step on the scale and see that magic number, but in trade, you felt terrible, carried more body fat, performed worse, looked worse, were weaker, less capable and just plain

UNDERSTANDING ACNE Your guide to clear skin BY BRI WILLIAMS, RN, BSN, REFINED AESTHETICS MED SPA PLLC, SANDPOINT, IDAHO
A
nyone who has ever struggled with acne knows that it can be crushing to someone’s self-esteem and confidence. There are more than 60 million cases of acne in America (20 percent of them being adults), so chances are you or a loved one has been affected by it. But what exactly is acne, what causes it and how can it be treated? We all have thousands of tiny holes in our skin; pores that connect to our oil glands beneath the surface of the skin through a follicle. These glands make an oily substance called sebum that travels through the follicle and excretes through the pore. The role of the sebum and follicle is to carry the dead skin cells to the surface of the skin so they can be removed from the body. When the follicle gets plugged from excess oil or dead skin cells, the following can occur: blackhead (open clogged pore), whitehead (closed clogged pore), pimple (pustules/papules with pus at their tips), nodule (large, solid painful lump beneath the surface of the skin) or cystic lesion (a pus-filled lump beneath the surface of the skin) can form. There are several factors that can contribute to the follicle becoming plugged. Hormonal changes can cause an increase in oil production. This most often occurs in older children/ teenagers entering puberty and during pregnancy or while starting/stopping birth control. Other contributors to excess oil production include certain medications (such as corticosteroids, testosterone or lithium) and diet. While puberty isn’t something that can be avoided, and certain medications are necessary for health reasons, our diet is something that is well within our control. Eating a

Call or visit our website to learn about monthly specials. diet high in simple carbohydrates and sugar causes our blood-sugar levels to rise quickly. Our body then releases a hormone called insulin. As a result, there is increased inflammation within the body, causing our oil glands to produce more oil. The excess oil is the most common culprit of clogged follicles, leading to acne. Acne is categorized as either non-inflammatory acne or inflammatory acne, and the treatment varies depending on the type. Blackhead and whiteheads are categorized as non-inflammatory acne because they are clogged pores that do not allow bacteria to get inside the pore and thrive. Pimples, nodules and cystic lesions are categorized as inflammatory acne because the clogged pore has become infected with bacteria. Non-inflammatory acne is best treated with topical products that either kill the bacteria on the skin or decrease the production of oil. The topical medicine may contain a retinoid, benzoyl peroxide, antibiotic or salicylic acid. Inflammatory acne is better treated with a combination of topical medication but also oral medications that work to heal the acne from within, such as an antibiotic. The course of treatment should be determined by a medical provider to ensure the best treatment for you. There are also easy things you can do at home to help prevent acne or keep it from getting worse:
• Change your pillowcase frequently (every other day). • Use a clean towel to dry your face after cleansing. • Don’t allow your cell phone to press against your skin. • Cleanse your face every morning, night and after working out. • Avoid touching your face with your hands and, whatever you do, don’t pick at blemishes. • Lastly, only use skincare products and makeup that state they are noncomedogenic, meaning they will not clog your pores. These simple changes can prevent your pores from becoming clogged and save you from a breakout. Whether you are a teenager struggling with acne or an adult who gets the occasional blemish, it is important to understand that it can be treated. The emotional distress from acne can be diminished by a visit to your provider for guidance in a treatment plan and by making lifestyle choices to promote clear skin. A clear complexion will help you to feel better and give you the confidence to truly shine.

PATIENT SAFETY
Research shows that patients who are involved in their health care get better results. Start by making sure your health-care provider(s) know all of the medications you take, including prescription medication, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and supplements. Inform your provider of any allergies you have and your reactions to medications.
PATIENT INVOLVEMENT CAN PREVENT ERRORS
When prescribed medications, ask questions such as:
Article Provided by Bonner General Health
• • • • • •
What is the name of this medication? What is this medication for? What is the dose of this medication? How often do I take this medication? Is it safe to take this medication with my other medications? Does this medication cause any side effects?
If your condition requires hospitalization, ask everyone you have direct contact with if they washed their hands. Studies show when patients check whether health-care workers washed their hands, the workers wash their hands more frequently and use more soap. When being discharged from the hospital ask your providers to explain any treatment plans you will use at home. This includes information on any medications you may need to take and when you are able to return to your normal activities. Many times health-care providers think their patients understand more than they really do about their discharge instructions. If your condition requires surgery, make sure that you and every member of your health-care team are clear on what procedure is being performed. If your provider orders a test or treatment, ask why it is needed and how it can help. Ask when you should expect results from any tests done. If you have questions, speak up! You have the right to question any part of your care. Make sure you know the provider in charge of your care; this is especially important if multiple providers are involved. Make sure each provider knows what they need to know—do not assume. Ask a family member or friend to act as your advocate.
P
atient safety is a high priority in health care. Many patient safety protocols are practiced in hospitals throughout the United States. It is becoming more and more evident that a patient’s involvement in their care is a key component to patient safety.
Many health-care organizations are encouraging patients to have an active involvement in their care. When patients partner with their health-care providers, errors can be prevented. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has a program titled, “Questions Are the Answers.” This program details ways to help prevent errors in your medical care. First, be involved.

Empowering Children to be Healthy LESSONS FROM A LIONESS BY RHONDA R. SAVAGE, DDS
I
had the privilege, for 12 years, to be a volunteer dentist for the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium. Lions, tigers, leopards and polar bears don’t get cavities; they break their teeth and need them cleaned. As humans, we get cavities in our teeth, for a number of reasons, but primarily because we have sugar in our diet. As a parent, you can empower your children to have healthy teeth. At the age of 2 to 3 years, children want to brush their own teeth. But they don’t have the dexterity to do a good job until later years. Parents sometimes need to push through this stage, continuing to help despite objections. You’re actually doing them a kindness to floss and brush their teeth for them. On the upside, we don’t have it as tough as a lioness! There was a fascinating nature channel show about the developmental stages of lion cubs. When the cubs are first born, the mother nurtures the cubs and protects them from danger. At the age of 2 to 3 weeks, their eyes are open and they’re almost able to run. The lioness brings in something small for them to play with, like a grasshopper, and then eventually brings them a rodent, something that smells of warm blood. Finally, a few more weeks pass and she takes them outside. She controls them at first, corralling them near the den, but the stakes are up. They play and fall, and they skirt with danger. Then the time comes for the cubs to learn to hunt. She takes them to the edge of the savannah, sets them up in a line, snarls and snaps to keep them in one spot. She hunts and takes down an animal, drags it over and eats her fill. Then the cubs eat.
they try to nurse. At the age of 1 year, the female cub is now a lioness and is pregnant. The cycle starts again.
After several lessons, she approaches a herd of antelope, picks out a weak animal, snips at the prey and draws blood. Then she releases the cubs to chase the weakened animal. They’re unprepared. They fall down and make mistakes, but eventually they bring down the animal. This time, the lioness lets them eat first.
Fortunately, we don’t need to snap and drive our young off to stand on their own. As a parent, our role is to nurture, teach, allow for mistakes and, like the lioness, train our children for independence. Oral health and systemic disease often go hand in hand. I do believe that if you take care of your teeth, they’ll take care of you!
The cubs are weaned in several days. She doesn’t allow them to nurse once they’ve had their first kill. The hardest part of this is that if they weren’t hungry, they wouldn’t hunt. She snaps at them and drives them off when

FEAR OF FALLING? Hearing loss may increase risk for falls BY DEANNA IFF, AU.D., CCC-A
THE ODDS OF FALLING INCREASE THREEFOLD FOR EVEN A MILD HEARING LOSS, AND THAT RISK CONTINUES TO GROW WITH AN INCREASED DEGREE OF HEARING LOSS.
A
ccording to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in four adults aged 65 and older experiences a fall each year, adding up to one fall for every second of every day. The CDC also reports that falls are the leading cause of injuries and injury-related deaths among older adults. Injuries from falls cost Medicare an estimated $31 billion in 2014, and this cost is expected to surge as the population ages, with the financial toll projected to reach $67.7 billion by 2020. Financial costs are not the only concern, as falls can also reduce confidence and increase fear, causing individuals to restrict physical activities. Lessening physical activity leads to reduced muscle strength and impaired balance, and can result in depression due to decreased overall health and dwindling social interaction. For older adults, managing fall risk is an important component of maintaining a high quality of life. Advancing age not only increases the likelihood of falling, but it is also the most significant predictor of hearing loss. According to the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders, approximately 15 percent of adults aged 18 years and older report some difficulty hearing, and nearly 25 percent of adults aged 65 to 74 and 50 percent of those 75 years and older have a disabling hearing loss. The odds of falling increase threefold for even a mild hearing loss, and that risk continues to grow with an increased degree of hearing loss, according to a study published in 2012 by Dr. Lin of Johns Hopkins University and Dr. Ferrucci of the National Institute on Aging. A systematic review and meta-analysis published in The Laryngoscope
SandpointLivingLocal.com
62
in 2016 also stated that the odds of falling were 2.39 times greater for older adults with hearing loss. The association between hearing loss and fall risk may be explained by the reduced awareness of the environment, balance system dysfunction caused by related inner-ear damage and/or the theory of cognitive load. This theory essentially suggests that attention is required for managing posture and stability, but hearing loss requires more brain power to be dedicated to understanding sounds in the environment, which limits the mental resources available for paying attention to standing and walking. Additional sensory issues, such as visual impairments or peripheral neuropathy (numbness) could cause further overload. Despite the changes that come with age, there are ways to reduce your risk of falling. Some recommendations include: 1. Talk to your doctor about reducing fall risk, and report any falls. Your medical providers cannot help you if they are not aware of an issue. 2. Maintain a current list of medications, and talk to your doctor about any that may increase fall risk. 3. Stay active! Participate in programs that improve balance and strength. 4. Manage your environment to reduce obstacles that can encourage tripping and falling. 5. Have your eyes and ears checked annually and follow provider recommendations regarding use of glasses or hearing devices.

A Gift From the Heart Why one fa mily gave away $10,000 By Cathy Herholdt Photos Courtesy of World Concern
W
e have a tradition at World Concern. When someone makes a large donation, we ring a cowbell. Everyone comes out of their offices and we gather to celebrate the gift.
I remember a particularly chilly Northwest afternoon last December when the cowbell rang. A man named Doug, a father of two young kids, had just dropped off a check for $10,000. We’ve certainly received other big gifts like this, but what made this one special was how it came about. It was a spontaneous gift, given from the heart of a dad. Doug and his wife Mindy had taken their kids to see a Nativity display in their North Seattle neighborhood. As their kids waited in line for hot chocolate, something caught Doug’s eye. It was a World Concern Global Gift Guide—a catalog of gifts people can give to those in need in honor of loved ones. The catalog is filled with photos of children and families served by World Concern in poor countries. “When I picked up the catalog and saw the pictures of those kids, it spoke to me,” recalled Doug. “I got really emotional. I remember crying ... just seeing those kids, I thought, ‘We need to do something to help them.’” That night, Doug talked with Mindy about his desire to help kids living

in poverty. They’d been blessed with extra income that year from Doug’s job as a freelance director of photography and had set some money aside. Doug told Mindy he wanted to donate the money. “When I saw his reaction to the photos, I wasn’t surprised,” recalled Mindy. “I know his heart for kids and his compassion. But I didn’t know he was going to say anything about the money or giving. We had discussed what we were going to do for Christmas—giving in some way. This just felt right. As soon as he said it, I agreed.” Doug and Mindy shared their decision with their kids, 9-year-old Sophia and 7-year-old Elliott. “The pictures were sad because they didn’t have stuff we have here,” said Sophia. One of the photos showed a young boy drinking dirty water from a pond through his T-shirt. “He drank through his shirt because the water was bad and had a lot of germs and bacteria,” she explained. The kids enjoyed learning how their family’s donation would provide goats, chickens, clean water and other practical gifts to children in need. “We’ve never given a donation like that before,” said Doug. “I’m a freelancer, so some months there’s no work and other months I’ll be

FEATURE STORY slammed. God has always been so faithful to us in terms of providing.” Mindy said they’d been holding onto the money for some time. “I wish I could say we were just waiting for the right time, but it was holding on for us—for our needs,” she said. “There are other things I know I wanted and could have got for Christmas gifts, but this donation filled that need, whatever it was. I can’t even think right now of what I wanted.” “We have such a good life. It just felt selfish not to do something more with our money,” said Doug. “Don’t get me wrong, I love stuff and buying new things, but we are called to be more than just consumers. It’s a test of faith. When our diligence with our money and work benefit someone besides ourselves, that feels good.” The Irvines have been tested in that faith this year. They have a new baby, 4-month-old Preston, and one of their cars recently broke down. The repairs are more than the car is worth, so they’ll have to get a new car. But they still feel the sacrifice was worth it. “When I see so much difficulty in the world ... neglect and hard conditions; it doesn’t take a lot of money to help a kid’s life. It feels cool that there are kids and orphans that I can be like a dad they’ll never meet—that I can provide for them in some way, help in some way,” Doug said.

ou’ve made it through the holidays, and hopefully tax season hasn’t been too rough on you. Summer is right around the corner, and you’re already seeing many of the weekends fill up with trips, visits, parties and more. For many of us it’s the shoulder season where we aren’t quite as busy. If you’ve been considering home improvement projects or putting them off again and again, this is the time to get going and start bringing your plans to fruition. Why spend the summer doing projects when you could be enjoying the fruits of your labor instead?
GET OUTSIDE!
Outdoor remodeling ideas that will brighten your summer
Your Deck and Patio – Snow, rain, cold and gray tend to keep us from utilizing these spaces during the darker months. Come summer, it’s the perfect place to relax and read, absorb some much-needed vitamin D or enjoy after-work beverages or an outdoor meal with the kids. Get summer barbecue season off right by getting a fresh coat of stain on your deck. While not always the most fun job, staining is a fairly simple task you can do to brighten your home’s exterior without having to drop big bucks on outside labor. Try a new shade this season to give your deck a new feel. Bold colors are also in style. If you want to save a little time in the future, consider acrylic deck restoration coating, available in several brands. Applying these products takes a little more time and effort but typically last longer than stain and helps smooth out splinters that might be emerging. Outdoor Kitchen Space – Once you’ve gotten the surface of your deck looking fabulous, you’ll want to spend more time on it dining and entertaining family and friends. One of the hottest trends in home improvement today is creating outdoor cooking spaces. A lot of outdoor cooking revolves around the grill, and many higher-end models come with multiple cooking features including infrared grilling surfaces, separate smokers and attached burners to assist with creating side dishes. Consider adding concrete countertops around your grill for a modern durable surface to prep and serve on. A mini fridge is an easy addition to keep from running in and out of the house for beverages, and a sink built into the countertops helps ease cleanup time. A truly unique addition is an outdoor pizza oven, where you can create your own wood-fired pizzas and quickly toast breads and appetizers. Backyard Pathways – After dinner it’s nice to get out and enjoy the backyard with the kids. A stone pathway linking your deck or patio area with your outdoor seating or fire pit creates a nice flow to the space. Landscaping around this pathway is entirely up to your tastes and preferences. If you enjoy growing plants, grasses and flowers, use smaller stones or pavers and line the walkway with your favorite plants, allowing the greenery to take center stage. Pea-sized gravel is an easy and cost-effective fill in but can be difficult to clean out debris and will need to be raked occasionally so bald spots don’t appear. Large pieces of slate or other solid rock also make for a great look, especially as they sink slightly down into the lawn. When designing your pathway, make sure it includes turns or a bit of a bend as curves and soft edges create a more natural look than perfectly straight lines.

Designated Kid’s Area – Let’s face it, for those who like a lush green and well-manicured looking lawn, kids can be a nightmare. Tackle football, slip ‘n slides and sprinklers, and the occasional off-road biking, can wreak havoc on a lawn. Give the kids and yourself a break by setting up a designated play area for them. Easily separate the play area from the main lawn with a natural barrier of plants or mulch. To keep

them in their special area, give them as many play options as possible including something to climb and swing on, a sandbox or area to build, and some green lawn as well for them to stretch out, run and roll around in. Have children help mow or pick weeds at a young age to show them how much work goes into keeping the lawn up and looking good, and perhaps they’ll think twice the next time they go digging for worms with a shovel. Hydroseeding the Lawn – If your lawn is in rough shape and has uneven color, and watering and sprinkling seed hasn’t seemed to help much, there are still solutions out there without having to fork over big bucks to re-sod. If you have a large yard, hydroseeding can save you a good amount of money as the amount of labor that goes in to it isn’t nearly as much as spreading out roll after roll of sod. Through hydroseeding you can also choose a specific style of grass or seed blend, which is especially helpful if you have difficult growing conditions. It can take up to two months for a hydroseeded lawn to take shape, and weeds will also sprout during this time, so keep that in mind if you have young children or pets, as they can’t go on the lawn for several weeks. Installing a Sprinkler System – If you plan on hydroseeding your lawn, you’ll need to install a sprinkler system before spraying the seed, and even if you don’t plan on creating a new lawn, underground sprinklers are a worthwhile investment. New systems can be controlled
from smart phones and can be set to run virtually any time of day and for any length of time. You’ll have better control and consistency with a finely tuned system compared to constantly moving around hoses and portable sprinklers. Underground systems are again a bit of an upfront investment, but the time saved in the long run is well worth it. It is also a big added value if you eventually decided to sell your home. Power Washing the Siding – If your home is 20-plus years old, your siding probably is not looking as bright as it was the day you bought it. While it might just look like fading, most of the dullness on vinyl and other siding is caused by dirt and debris that’s built up over the years. Utilizing a power washer to remove that grit and grime will help your home ‘pop’ again, and you’ll be surprised how much more curb appeal is added with this simple weekend task. Pressure washers are available to rent at many local retailers, and you’ll also want to get a siding specific detergent, and if your home is two stories, spray tips and extensions to avoid using a ladder. Gently apply the detergent and wash the siding clean, avoiding windows and exterior vents.

76
She/He-Shed for Entertaining – While the term ‘man cave’ is well established, the ‘he shed’ or ‘she shed’ is another trend in turning space usually used for storage into one meant for entertaining. A little spring cleaning and organizing might help you realize you no longer need your shed. While keeping the outside appearance of a typical storage shed, transform the interior into a walk-up bar, game room, sports bar or quiet reading nook. While you might need to call in a plumber, other projects like adding a bar top, shelving, wood or laminate flooring and interior decoration can typically all be done by homeowners with a little guidance from your local hardware shop. Your friends will be stunned the next time you take them to the backyard to relax in your shed.

our home is where your heart is, but it can feel a little less like love when you’re not crazy about its interior. Perhaps you loved it once, but time has aged it and dated it, leaving you wanting something a bit more fresh and modern. Maybe you prefer something a little different as your tastes have changed, or maybe you bought a home in a desirable neighborhood for an unbeatable price and need to put a little sweat equity into the home. Whatever your reasons for wanting an interior remodel, you can do it yourself or choose to hire someone to do it for you. Depending on your budget, you can have the entire interior of your home gutted and remodeled by professional contractors or you can hire contractors only for the most intricate details of your remodel. Whether to DIY or hire professionals is the biggest question you must ask before you begin this process. What Can You Do Yourself? The DIY process of your home remodel might depend entirely on your budget. If you have a lot of money to work with and want to go the route of hiring professionals, you can. However, if the amount of money you have to spend on the remodel is limited, you can do a lot of your remodel yourself. It’s best to save your money to hire professionals to handle very specific things you aren’t qualified to do. The next most important question you can ask yourself is what kind of handyman experience do you have? Are you learning as you go? The Internet makes it easier for you to learn how to do things most people can’t do, and that might help you do a lot more on your own. Here are just a few things you can do yourself without spending a big chunk of your money in one area.
WHEN TO DIY
Your Kitchen Remodel: A kitchen remodel is one of the most expensive aspects of any home, but it’s not always as expensive as you might imagine. If the footprint is good, you need not move any electrical wiring or plumbing. That’s a huge savings. If the cabinets are nice but you’re not a fan of the color, there is no reason to spend tens of thousands of dollars on new cabinetry when you can spend a few hundred dollars on paint and give yourself a major upgrade. Updating your counters, your sink, your faucet and your handles and pulls are easy projects you can do on your own.

Floor Remodels: You might not know how to lay tile or hardwood, but there are instructional videos all over the Internet to help you learn. It’s not as difficult as it looks, and you can do it yourself to save significantly on the cost of new flooring. Paint: Painting is one of the most dramatic changes you can make to a home without spending much money, and you can do it yourself without any prior experience. What You Can’t or Shouldn’t Do Yourself You can do a lot on your own if you have the experience, but there are some interior remodeling projects you simply shouldn’t
tackle if you’re not properly trained or don’t have ample experience working with them. These are the things you might want to take your money and spend hiring a professional to ensure the job is done correctly, safely and as inexpensively as possible. If you try to do some of these things yourself without any experience, you might find it’s more expensive when you need someone to come out and fix your mistakes. Plumbing: Plumbing is important, and it’s not something you want to tackle on your own. You can install a sink and exchange some fixtures without any help, but any plumbing upgrades, replacements or changes should be done by a professional. If you plan on changing the layout of your bathrooms or kitchen, you should hire a plumber to move the plumbing for you. Electrical: Unless you are a trained electrician capable of working electrical panels, there is no reason you should try this on your own.
Electrical wiring, if done poorly, can cause significant damage to your home and life. You could electrocute yourself, cause a fire by wiring things incorrectly, or seriously damage your home or put your family at risk. It’s not worth it. Roof Repairs: This might sound relatively easy compared to moving plumbing or handling electrical work, but roof repairs are dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing. Not only could you fall and end up seriously hurt without the proper equipment and knowledge, you might not do the job correctly and cause serious damage to your home in the meantime. The good news about remodeling your home is you can do so much of it on your own. You might not even need as much work as you think, which is why it’s a good idea to start small and work your way up. Try painting the house first to see if that makes a difference. If it does, you might find everything else looks a
SandpointLivingLocal.com

little better in your eyes. Once you’re ready to start the interior remodeling process, you should ask a contractor to come in and give you an estimate on the work that does need to be done professionally. Unless you have experience, it’s never worth the risk to take on a job that could have devastating effects. Remember, it’s always less expensive to have a job done right the first time than it is to have it repaired after the additional damage is caused by shoddy work and a lack of experience in the remodeling department. Whether you’re working with $1,000 or $100,000 to remodel your home, you can make big changes. All you need to know is which changes you can do yourself and which ones you should leave to the pros. It makes life a lot simpler in the long run.

BACKYARD GARDEN Raised Beds Whether you consider yourself a gardener or not, raised beds can help you succeed in having a plentiful harvest. Here are just some of the advantages that gardening in raised beds offers: A higher quality of soil – A raised bed, as opposed to supplementing the soil in your yard, allows you the ability to plant your vegetables with the perfect soil blend, something that will go far to achieving a plentiful harvest.
Functional & beautiful BY PATTY HUTCHENS
Less weed growth – Raised beds are typically planted more densely than those that are planted in the ground. This means there is less room for weeds to grow, and if they do find the space, they are easier to pull from soil in raised beds. More growth in less space – Whether you use succession planting or vertical supports, you are able to plant more food in a small space, resulting in an abundance of fresh vegetables. Edible Landscapes Do you consider yourself more practical than creative? This is an opportunity for you to be both! Edible landscape techniques allow the integration of your plants into a decorative setting. Whether you plant herbs, seeds or berries, the result is not only beautiful but useful as well. A popular practice is utilizing onion and garlic chives as a perennial edging or border plant in an herb garden. Chives are part of the lily family and are grown in large part for their leaves and flowers. And the best part is they keep coming back year after year! When choosing a spot for the chives, keep in mind that they do best in full sun. When

to add color and vibrancy to your yard. All you need to start is a blank wall or a bare fence. Plant edibles, annuals and even perennials for a burst of color.
If you choose to grow your chives near peppers, there is the benefit of deterring insects. It is also said that it can improve the flavor and yields of nearby plants.
If you don’t have a place to create your planter wall, a wood palette makes a perfect starting point to construct one, and you can gain inspiration simply by logging onto Pinterest. Or if you simply want to order one, there are “living walls that can be custom made. A couple starting points include LivingGreenPlanters.

TRAVEL & LEISURE
BY MARGUERITE CLEVELAND PHOTOS BY RANDALL J. HODGES
Old-School Photographer RANDALL J. HODGES
I
n the age of digital photography where any image can be manipulated in Photoshop or jazzed up with an Instagram filter, Randall J. Hodges stands apart as an old-school photographer. He uses a style referred to as “All in Camera.”
“I do all the work right in the camera without the use of Photoshop, Lightroom or any other post processing programs. This means I set up the color palette of my digital camera to mimic the old films I used to shoot with Kodak Ektachrome, Kodachrome and Elite Chrome films. What this means is, the image you see in my gallery, on social media or in calendars and magazines is exactly the same as what you would have seen in the back of my camera if you had been standing next to me when I shot it,” said Hodges. He takes great pride in the fact that his work is all his skill and technique and not the result of computer manipulation. “Walks Far” is his tagline, and it fits Hodges, who on New Year’s Eve 2015 hit 24,901 miles hiked, which is the equivalent of walking around the circumference of the earth. “Hiking is what got me into photography. I have always considered myself to be a hiking photographer. When I first started out I just carried a point-and-shoot film camera and would snap photos of the locations I hiked to. I would often backpack deep into the wilderness for many days and then bring home my photos to show everyone. I found myself always explaining how much better the views were than my pictures could convey, so I decided to change that. I bought a real camera and learned how to use it, and soon I did not have to explain how amazing the places I visited were; my images could now do that on their own. When people started telling me they looked like postcards and I should do something with that, I decided to become a professional landscape photographer, and as they say, ‘the rest is history,’” he said. Hodges is just starting his 18th year as a full-time photographer, and he continues to hike between 1,000 and 1,300 miles a year. “I really love to hike,” he said.

Hodges is a well-known regional photographer, and his work has been published in National Geographic, Outdoor Photography magazine, Nature Photographer Magazine, Photo Professional Magazine, Popular Photography, Seattle Met Magazine and many more. His work has been published more than 4,500 times. He recently fulfilled a long-term dream when he published a 208-page, full-color, coffee-table book, “Images of the West, Hiking Photographer’s Adventures in the Western United States and Canada.” Renowned photographer and conservationist Art Wolf wrote the foreword to the book. “I dedicated it to my hiking partner and gallery greeter, Shyla the dog and super hiker, who has hiked about 7,200 miles herself in her 13 years as a professional hiking dog. It covers all my favorite areas of the West with my inspirations for each region and some light photography tips techniques woven in. The book has received rave reviews, and I am very proud of it. This is the first book I have ever published that is all my work, but I have been published over 4,500 times worldwide in books, magazines, calendars, greeting cards, postcards and so much more. I always enjoy being published, but having my own book out is a real dream come true,” Hodges said. Hodges’ dog Shyla is a German shepherd mix and a loyal hiking companion. “We have never known what the mix is, so I have always said she is shepherd plus awesome,” he said. Shyla has hiked over 7,200 miles

with Hodges carrying her own food, water and bedroll during many backpacking adventures. “At the age of 11, I retired her from that duty and now carry the load for her. At the age of 13, she can still put in an 8- to 10-mile day.” Hodges is very popular in the local area for his photography lessons, which are conducted out in the field. Many of his classes for 2018 are already sold out, especially his Tulip seminars. “My students can expect to learn everything needed to shoot like I do, right in the camera. I will help them get their camera set up correctly, teach them the “old school” techniques, and work with them on composition and light. Many of my students have told me they have learned more from me in four hours than they have learned in their entire life. I get a lot of repeat students. Many, who started with a local class, got their camera set up and learned how to use them, figured what kind of teacher I am, then come out for one of my bigger adventures. I have some students who have taken over 25 classes with me. Not only am I your teacher on my longer adventures, but I am also your tour guide, and I put you in the right place at the right time over and over again! We have so much fun out in the field,” he shared. Starting out as a photographer you have to pay your dues to build a

Epic Photography following. Hodges spent 14 years on the Northwest Art Circuit doing 26 shows a year. A huge dream was to one day open a photography gallery. “I finally realized that dream when I opened the Randall J. Hodges Photography Gallery at 317 Main Street in beautiful Downtown Edmonds. We have now been opened for four years, and I absolutely love having and running the gallery. I have just signed a lease in Cannon Beach, Oregon, and am very excited to open my Second Gallery, Images of the West, the Randall J. Hodges photography Gallery,” he said. Hodges’ gallery in Cannon Beach is tentatively scheduled to open in March 2018. With his experience as a hiking photographer, Hodges has plenty of favorite places in the Pacific Northwest for photography and hiking. He breaks them up by the seasons. “My favorite areas in the Pacific Northwest can be divvied up into time of year. In the winter I love to shoot the Oregon and Washington beaches. In the early spring it’s tulips, tulips, tulips! Mid to late spring it’s forest trails, creeks and waterfalls, and

the spring greens are alive and the water is flowing high. In the summer, the only place you will find me is up high in the alpine wilderness of the mountains searching for wildflowers and lakes. My favorite areas for fall color are the east side of the cascades and the Columbia River gorge. Some of my very favorite hikes are Shi-Shi Beach in Olympic National Park, The Wonderland Trail around Mt Rainier, The Enchantments in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, and Park Butte, Skyline Divide, Sahale Arm and Yellow Aster Butte in the North Cascades,” he said. Hodges’ gallery in Downtown Edmonds is open daily. To find more information on his artwork and to learn more about his photography classes, visit RandallJHodges.com.

FOOD & DRINK
Shepherd’s Pie BY CHEF TROY LOUIS CHANDLER
Ingredients: • 3 Ibs. Idaho russet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks (don’t be afraid to substitute half yams) • 1 tbsp. vegetable oil • 1 large onion, diced
When I was a kid, I unknowingly created this dish on accident. I would go over to my friend’s house for dinner, and sometimes his mom would make “kitchen surprise.” She was so proud of the nights that she could take every leftover cooked and hidden away in Tupperware containers of random scary things from the previous week’s ‘70s experimental cuisine. Well, we kids were left with a plate of mashed potatoes and some random Hamburger Helper scrapings, peas and some who knows what. Oh, and a bottle of ketchup—the original ranch. I would slowly sneak my hodgepodge of meat stuff under my mashers to make them go away. One evening, I put some ketchup on my “surprise” but still slid it under its familiar fluffy potato comforter. I was hungry, starving. Couldn’t help it. I scooped up a heavy load and for the first time at this table, my fork touched my mouth. Surprise? Pure heaven!
• 1 large carrot, small diced • 1 Ib. ground lamb (or substitute with another meat like venison or elk, beef if you must … boring) • 1 cup beef stock • 1 tbsp. tomato paste • 1 tbsp. flour • 1 tsp. fresh rosemary, chopped • 1 tbsp. Italian parsley, chopped • 1 cup frozen peas • 1 cup frozen corn • 6 tbsp. unsalted butter • 1/2 cup heavy cream • Kosher salt to taste
method: • Preheat oven to 375°F. • You can do all this in a sauté pan and transfer to a casserole dish, but here we are going to keep the dishes to a minimum and use a 14-inch or larger cast-iron skillet. • In salted cold water, bring the potatoes to a boil and cook until tender about 20 minutes. • Have your butter and heavy cream on the stove already warm. (This lets them incorporate into the potatoes faster without cooling them. Mash your potatoes adding salt as needed. • In your cast-iron pan, sauté over medium-high heat oil, onion, corn, carrot and meat. Cook until browned. • Add flour, tomato paste and herbs. Sauté for about 2 minutes then add the beef stock. • Simmer until sauce thickens, about 10 minutes, then add the peas. • Spread the mashed potatoes over the cast-iron skillet and make some cool fork marks here and there that will brown nicely.
REAL homeMade
• Throw it in the oven for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

Skiing for a Cause 2,400 FEET OF SCHWEITZER SET FOR MARCH 24
BY PATTY HUTCHENS PHOTO COURTESY SCHWEITZER MOUNTAIN RESORT
I
t has become a tradition for many in North Idaho, and while the format may have changed throughout the years, a few things remain the same—the fun and energy behind raising money for a very good cause. 2,400 Feet of Schweitzer will take place this year on March 24 beginning at 7:30am. This year’s format will begin with a sunrise top-to-bottom giant slalom event that will begin at the Sky House Lodge at the summit of Schweitzer. Covering 2,400 vertical feet and nearly 2.5 miles, it will conclude at Outback Lodge at the base of the mountain. According to organizers, the race is open to alpine, telemark skiers and snowboarders of all levels and will also allow for passing. In addition, participants will be seeded depending upon fundraising efforts. People can compete on twoor four-person teams, but their seeding will be based upon their individual fundraising. Following the race, breakfast will be served, and then participants will take part in challenges throughout the day that will allow teams to gain points for their overall score.

The funds raised will go toward research for Cystinosis and the future of Hank Sturgis, a North Idaho youth who was diagnosed with Cystinosis in November 2007. It is a rare genetic disease that affects approximately 500 people in the U.S. and 2,000 people worldwide. Because it is such a rare disease, there is little research money allocated to finding a cure. Since the 24 Hours for Hank Foundation was formed, more than $1.1 million has been raised to date providing Hank and others the hope they need. Prizes will be awarded in team categories as well as by age. There will also be a top fundraiser award, which will be determined by the funds raised by noon on Saturday. The event will conclude with an awards party on Saturday evening that will include an auction and food from around the world. Don’t miss out! This is limited to 200 participants. Register online at EventBrite.com under 2400 Feet of Schweitzer.
