THE HEART TO CARE. THE SKILL TO HEAL.

PUBLISHER What can YOU do? OVER THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS, it has become a common theme that has permeated its way through our society. The “sense of entitlement” so many people feel is seen in all generations and economic classes. And while President John F. Kennedy said over five decades ago, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country,” the feeling that we are owed something by society is as prevalent as ever. In the current environment of political campaigns, the question abounds. What is it this candidate will do for ME?

Bonner General Health has the leading technology in breast cancer screening, 3-D Mammography.

I urge you to really stop and think about it. Why would our country, state or community owe us anything? The truth is the only thing we as citizens should expect is that which we have already been blessed with – the freedom to choose how we live our lives and the abundant opportunities we are afforded. It’s time we all should stop and think about what we as individuals can offer our country, state and community to make it a better place for everyone. This month we celebrate Memorial Day. There is no better example of people who have given of themselves than our current and former members of the military. If it were not for their sacrifices, we would not be given the freedom and opportunities we have today. So next time you hear someone express a sense of entitlement, stop and remind them that change starts within themselves. And as citizens of this great country, let’s all remember to thank those who have served in the military.

3-D Mammography detects 40% more invasive cancers than traditional screening methods and results in up to 40% fewer callbacks for rescreening.

To schedule your mammogram call (208) 265-3325.

There is power in prayer, and the youth at Sandpoint High School are witnessing it firsthand. Student Spencer Bassett had a vision on how he could help not only the high school students and staff but also the community as a whole. Saddened by the tragic deaths of some of the students, Spencer began an after school prayer group. This story by Patty Hutchens will introduce you to Spencer and see what a difference he and some of his fellow students are making.

Feature Story

This story by Debbie Heiser will take you through her journey of doing her part to help eradicate cancer. Inspired by her mother’s battle with cancer, a battle she sadly lost, Debbie has taken part in several cancer walks. It is those endless walks of exhaustion, enduring blisters and heat, and wondering if she could finish that also gave her a very small glimpse into the fight people with cancer fight each day. Debbie, along with her sisters, have raised thousands of dollars to do their part. Considering a walk for a special cause? This story will inspire you.

WINDOW COVERINGS… IT’S ABOUT MORE THAN JUST PRIVACY

“CAN THAT NEIGHBOR across the street see that I’m naked when I dash across the hall?” “I wish we had air conditioning. The office gets too hot by mid-morning to even be comfortable to work the rest of the day.” “The air coming off that window sure feels cold… I wonder how much heat loss that created this winter.” “Those blinds I saw at Jim and Amy’s house were so beautiful. I’d love to have something like that to dress up my dining room.” There are four common reasons people buy window coverings – privacy, sun control, energy efficiency and aesthetics. Lucky for those people shopping for window coverings, we have them all covered – literally! (Pun intended) If you haven’t shopped for “blinds” or window coverings in the past 15 years, you are missing out. So let me tell you about a few of the perks. I’ll also say that if you are building a new home, go look at window coverings now so you can plan ahead. Some builders have it figured out and include a budget amount for blinds with their construction loans. That way, when

SandpointLivingLocal.com

21

DO YOU NEED PRIVACY?

you move in and have blown all the money on the house, you aren’t left standing in your new fishbowl wondering how to pay for window coverings. Most people buy window coverings because they need privacy, but do you realize that blinds have multiple functions. Not only do they provide privacy, but they block ultraviolet (UV) rays and save our interior furnishings and flooring, and they also help keep our homes warmer in the winter, cooler in the summer, in turn saving money on our utility bills. Plus, they can really lend a hand in the interior finishes department. Some are uber contemporary with wood and metal blends. Some are more formal with sheers and tilting vane for privacy, and some are strictly functional and tuck up out of the way when they’re not doing their job. Technology has played an important part in the window covering world, not only with product advancement, but also with smarthome integration. You can literally raise and lower your blinds from your smartphone or

SandpointLivingLocal.com

22

tablet while you are overseas. If you didn’t prewire, no worries, they can be battery operated. (Requires a battery changed-out once a year) For privacy, look into top-down bottom-up options. This means that the blind is attached to the top of your window, but the fabric not only lowers to completely cover the glass, but then the top part continues to lower so that you can see out and let some natural light in. The lower half of you isn’t visible from the outside. Now you’ll be confident that neighbor can’t see you darting down the hall naked. There are numerous options that control the sun and block UV rays. The most common are screen roller shades. These come in different opacity levels. For example, a 1 percent openness will block 99 percent UV, 10 percent openness blocks 90 percent UV and so on. The rule of thumb with these is that whatever you can see out during the day is what people can see in at night when your lights are on. If you want privacy, this isn’t your best option. If you want a cooler house and your interior furnishings to last longer, this option is for you. The other most popular window coverings are cellular shades, or sometimes referred to as honeycombs. They are called this because the cell construction is similar to a honeycomb. These are the most energy-efficient window coverings available because they trap air coming from the exterior into your home. They trap that cold air out during the winter and during the summer, they reflect the heat back out.

We Set the Standard!

There are other options that involve tilting vanes, sheers, wood, shutters, aluminum and vinyl. All of these come with lots of color and texture options, so believe me when I say there is something for everyone. Lifting systems range from corded, to cordless, to remote controlled. All are state-of-the-art and are tested to make sure they meet strict safety codes for children and pets. Go to your local showroom to give them a try. Like a car, we encourage you to test drive them before you buy.

“Dust off ” your investment strategy. Dusting is a big part of spring cleaning. Light fixtures, shelves, windowsills – they can all acquire layers of dust and grime that need to be whisked away. And if you’ve left your investment strategy unexamined for a long period, it too may need to be “dusted off ” and re-evaluated. Over time, your financial goals, family situation and even risk tolerance can change, so it’s a good idea to review your overall strategy to make sure it’s still appropriate for your needs. Get rid of “clutter.” Once you start tidying up your house, you might be surprised at all the “duplicates” you find – a broom in a bedroom, another broom in the laundry room, a third in the garage, and so on. Just as you probably don’t need multiple brooms, so you may find that you have many versions of the same type of investment in your portfolio. If you own too many of the same investment, and a market downturn affects that particular asset, your portfolio could take a big hit. You may be better off by selling some of the toosimilar investments and using the proceeds to diversify your holdings. (However, while diversification can reduce the impact of volatility on your portfolio, it can’t guarantee profits or protect against loss.) Remove “stains” on your portfolio. As you clean your carpets and furniture, you might notice some stains that should be removed. And when you look through your portfolio, you might find some “stains” in the form of chronically underperforming investments. Instead of holding on to these vehicles with

SandpointLivingLocal.com

the hope that they will eventually turn around, you might consider selling them and using the proceeds to purchase new investments, which can help fill any gaps you may have in your holdings. Consolidate your accounts. Have you ever discovered a stapler in one drawer, a roll of tape in the linen closet and a bunch of marking pens on your desk? All these items may be useful, but for the sake of efficiency (and to cut down on frustrating searches), you might want to consolidate them in one place. And you could do something similar with your investments. Specifically, if you have some stocks here, a couple of certificates of deposits there, and some IRAs at still another place, you might consider consolidating them with one financial services provider. With all your investments in one place, you could possibly reduce the fees and paperwork associated with maintaining your accounts. And when you eventually start taking withdrawals from your IRA and 401(k), you may find it easier to calculate these required distributions if they’re coming from just one place. But just as importantly, when you consolidate your investments with one provider, you may find it easier to follow a single, unified investment strategy. So, there you have them – some springcleaning ideas to help you update and energize your investment portfolio. And you won’t even need a dustpan.

SMOOTH SAILING THE INS AND OUTS OF BOAT INSURANCE BY TREVOR CAMPBELL UNIQUE NEEDS

YO U H AV E O P T I O N S

ENJOYING THE WATER is a way of life in this community — whether it’s taking a stroll along the waterfront, getting the kayak out for an evening ride or dropping a fishing line into the water, once spring is here, boating season is close behind. To ensure that boat owners experience smooth sailing this time of year, it’s important to understand the ins and outs of watercraft insurance. Protecting your boat can get a little tricky; there is no standard policy, and a number of things must be considered in order to find the very best coverage. This is where working with an independent agent — someone who specializes in boat insurance and represents multiple carriers familiar with these policies — can help. Boat insurance can be broken down into two categories: • Property Coverages - Damages occurring to you, your passengers or your property. • Liability and Pollution Coverages Damages occurring to other people or their property. Property: The boat itself is a large part of the property policy. Also included can be the engines (inboard, outboard [IO]), electronics, sails, trailers, sporting equipment or other personal belongings. Different carriers provide various options for each of these. It’s important to think about not only what is covered but also how the policy will pay for losses. replacement cost (New for Old), actual cash value (ACV/Depreciated Value) and agreed value are all common valuations

They say people protect what they love; so what are you insuring?

in policies, but what each valuation pays after a loss is entirely different. For example: Some carriers will offer the agreed value or ACV for the boat, but engines up to 5 years old might qualify for replacement cost. This is a significant coverage advantage for those who have newer boats or repower an older vessel. If a loss occurs, the replacement cost valuation might provide $10,000 or more in additional settlement per engine! Liability: Like car insurance, liability coverage provides coverage to other boaters and boat owners in the event you are at-fault for an accident on the water. This coverage will pay to repair or replace the other boats, docks or property of someone else as well as for their medical care, lost wages, attorney fees and other costs incurred as a result of a boating accident for which you are at-fault. The liability section of the policy should also include some coverage to pay for wreck removal and fuel spill coverages. One wellknown national carrier only provides wreck removal coverage as part of its hull coverage policies. This is a huge problem as the costs associated with removing a wreck diminish the dollars available to replace your boat. Every boat need is unique, and every company does things a little differently. Your agent should explain the options available, make recommendations and provide some examples of claim experiences. It’s critical the correct options are made in the beginning so if a claim occurs, the right things happen. Taking the time to review your policy and coverages is the only way to ensure your time on the water is as it should be, worry-free.

BREAKING THE COMMUNICATION BARRIER HUMANS ARE FROM MARS, DOGS ARE FROM PLUTO BY STEPHANIE VICHINSKY

SEEK INSTRUCTION

DOG TRAINING IS MORE COMPLICATED than rocket science when you do not have the right tools, and there is no YouTube video or book from the library that can offer the hands-on advice needed to bridge the gap. There are hundreds of competing methods and theories out there, some of which work and others that don’t, but they often gloss over the most important facet of dog training – communication. And true communication can only be achieved through experience and proper instruction.

speak “human.” Many behavioral problems in our pets stem from poor communication between man and dog. For example, most owners pet their dogs when the dog is acting in an approved fashion. They talk to them, “good boy,” even going as far as yelling, “Way to go, pup!” Sometimes they’ll play with the dog, wrestle or rough-house, and the very next day they’ll attempt to reprimand the dog for jumping on guests by using the same techniques: pushing the dog away (the dog does not know the difference between this and petting/rough-housing), yelling (the dog merely looks at this as attention). The owners have sent a gray message to a black and white dog.

As human beings, we have the acumen needed to comprehend clear messages as well as subtle suggestions. We have the ability to generalize situations and improvise when necessary. We see and understand all of the “gray” between the “black” and “white.”

The same goes for dogs with anxiety. As human beings, it’s in our nature to comfort a child who is stressed or scared. We hold them and tell them everything will be all right. The child, also being human, has the ability to reason with the situation and work through the stress. However, dogs (again) associate petting and praise with approved behavior. When we

Our furry friends don’t have the same understanding, and if we are to train them effectively, we must first learn how to communicate with them. We need to learn to speak “dog” because they’ll never learn to

cuddle our dogs during a stressful event and tell them everything will be all right, the dog assumes we must like the behavior because it is receiving constant affirmation to support the assumption. As a result, the dog continues the behavior, and often continues it with more force. This poor communication does nothing to cure the problem, leads to frustration in the owner and dog, and often sparks more behavioral problems.

Seeking instruction early and often from an experienced professional facilitates quality communication from the start, saving a lot of time, money, and frustration down the road.

Seeking instruction early and often from an experienced professional facilitates quality communication from the start, saving a lot of time, money, and frustration down the road. That being said, not all instructors are created equal. When dealing with dogs and people who claim to understand them, know that a trainer with extensive experience and no certification often trumps a trainer with little experience and a certification. Quality communication varies with a dog’s breed, age, history and skill level, and proper timing and understanding on the part of the trainer can only come after having touched hundreds of dogs in the same circumstances. These trainers will have the tools necessary to make dog training fun and educational so you can leave the rocket science at home.

LIFE & COMMUNITY HEART AND SOUL

SUPPORTING OUR CHILDREN Sandpoint Rotary making a significant impact on our schools. By Patty Hutchens

WHEN MY SON WAS DIAGNOSED with sensory integration disorder at the age of 5, I performed extensive research to learn exactly what it meant. Other than the help my child’s speech and occupational therapists offered, I felt alone. And the research I did was not only for my benefit, but for that of the teachers as well. I shared with them the books I had read, the information I had learned, and even brought in my son’s speech pathologist and occupational therapist to educate the school administration and his teacher on his needs and ways they could help him succeed in the classroom. The diagnosis was foreign to them. And while he is not autistic and now at 18 years of age has mostly adapted to or outgrown his issues, many on the autism spectrum have his same sensory processing issues and many other obstacles that keep them from being able to fully adapt in a traditional classroom setting. But thanks to the efforts of the Sandpoint Rotary Club and the CHAFE 150, parents and teachers no longer have to experience the frustrations many have had to endure in the past.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

29

The CHAFE 150 bike ride is put on by the Sandpoint Rotary Club and raises money that goes directly to provide for the children in Lake Pend Oreille School District who are on the autism spectrum. The money, which has totaled over $110,000 in the last two years, has gone a long way to helping children not only survive but also thrive. Statistics show that 1 in 68 children are affected with some type of autism. The CHAFE 150 is a bike ride with distances of 30, 80 and 150 miles. Taking place in Sandpoint on June 18 of this year, it has been named one of the most beautiful rides in the country. And the best part is that all the money raised stays local to help our children. To volunteer, sponsor or participate in the ride, please visit chafe150. org. Every little bit helps and you will be helping to impact many in our community.

A FAMILY TRADITION AND IT JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER

BY PATTY HUTCHENS

SINCE 1980, WHEN WAYNE TOWNSEND purchased NAPA Auto Parts, the business has been the go-to place in our community for everything from dress up items for the interior and exterior of your vehicle, to parts for your small engine, ATV, tractor, lawn mower or boat. They have you covered from head to toe – or from bumper to bumper!

C O M M U N I T Y- M I N D E D put us in a beautiful area of the world and has placed people in our path that have helped us grow a home with friends and family, as well as the business with employees and customers,” reflected Andrew. “It is the relationships we have in both areas that lead to our success.” But success means something more to Andrew and Susan than simply running a profitable business. “Susan and I believe that if our priority is to be morally and ethically sound in how we approach our business dealings and the business takes hold in its community, success will come,” said Andrew.

Townsend’s daughter, Susan, and her husband Andrew Fingel purchased the store in 1996. They have since added locations in Priest River and Newport. If you have not driven by the Sandpoint location lately, their recent remodel will definitely beckon you to stop in and check it out! “Susan and I decided we needed a building that caught your attention to match the refreshing customer service you get inside the store,” said Andrew of the remodel.

With a desire to give back to the community that has supported them, Andrew and Susan have been very generous with their time and talent. Susan began the Mothers Of Preschoolers (MOPS) group and still participates in Moms Next and C.A.R.E. In recent years, Andrew was active in the coaching of numerous youth sports teams SYSA, Sandpoint Little League, and Sandpoint Junior Tackle. “We have employees and their families involved in numerous groups and events such as the Injectors Car Club, 4-H, Bonner County Fair, Ducks Unlimited, the Elk’s, Goodwill, Sandpoint Football and The Festival,” said Andrew who adds that they also donate to these groups as well as to other community fundraising efforts.

The fact that they are able and willing to help everyone, from the newly licensed teen who wants to change the oil in the family car, to the frazzled driver who needs help replacing windshield wipers or headlights, to the ASE certified mechanic with decades of experience, explains why they are known for their outstanding customer service. The staff has over 150 years of combined experience providing customers with not only knowledge but superior customer service as well. It’s the “NAPA know how.” Further, as an independent auto parts store affiliated with NAPA (National Automotive Parts Association), they are part of the oldest and leading automotive parts distributor in the country. But the name does not begin to cover the vast inventory of items one can purchase at a NAPA Auto Parts store. “We could just as easily be called NAPA Auto, Heavy Duty, Marine, Small Engine, Lawn Mower, Tractor, Truck, Parts and Tools, Equipment, and Interior/Exterior Accessories (Store). But that would be a huge sign!” said Andrew. In addition to the large inventory carried at their stores, they have access to the NAPA Distribution Center in Spokane for same day delivery or free next day delivery.

As for his business philosophy, it is simple. “A loyal customer will go out of their way to come see you because you have taken care of them,” said Andrew, adding that loyalty is what he and his staff strives for every day. Stop by and see the new remodel. NAPA Auto Parts is your locally owned and operated store for all your auto parts needs!

HOPE ELEMENTARY TEACHER PROVIDES MUCH MORE THAN AN EDUCATION BY PATTY HUTCHENS FOR HOPE ELEMENTARY sixth grade teacher, Jennifer Majors, the most rewarding aspect of being a teacher is the ability to know she is establishing real and authentic relationships with students that will help shape and impact their future as well as the future of the next generation. “I often find myself in awe of the innovators and world changers I have growing before my very eyes, as they develop both academically and socially,” said Majors of the students she teaches. “It’s incredibly rewarding to feel like each day is making a difference.” If there is one thing that Majors has learned during her nine years as a teacher, it is that above all the students’ basic needs come before all else. “As a teacher you lesson plan, you strategize, you create neat and innovative ways to make learning fun,” said Majors. “But it is essential to realize that if your students are not having their basic needs met, then all of your engaging lessons will fall flat.” Majors shares a story of one young student who she describes as “unreachable,” – struggling both academically and behaviorally. But after taking the time to conference with him oneon-one, she discovered that the young child was simply exhausted. He did not have the basic necessities for a good night sleep; no pillows, blankets or even a bed to sleep on. “I knew what I had to do – meet his basic needs. I returned the next day with a blanket and pillow...shortly after his behavior improved. And slowly I began to see academic growth,” said Majors. “There’s more to this story and many other things happened that year that contributed to this student’s success, but it will still remain an experience I will never forget.”

he power of prayer. For anyone who has experienced life’s little miracles, you know just how powerful the hand of God can be. And that is just what is taking place at Sandpoint High School due to a group of students who are doing what they can to make a positive difference.

and saw Sandpoint High School and the region itself saved and completely covered in prayer,” said Spencer, whose father is a local pastor and has influenced Spencer a great deal. “The reason I thought the high school would be a great place to do this is because it’s such a place of influence in the region.”

Students at Sandpoint High School have experienced a great deal of loss over the last couple of years. Reports of suicides, depression and bullying have been heartbreaking. But the response the students have had to these devastating events has been nothing short of uplifting.

After hearing stories of cities that have been changed or completely turned around through the use of prayer evangelism, Spencer wanted to do what he could to positively influence the lives of the students at Sandpoint High School.

One action taken was by Spencer Bassett, a junior at the high school, who began a prayer group just over a year ago. “I felt led to start the group when I got a vision last February

“Prayer evangelism in a nutshell is blessing people, fellowshipping with believers as well as non-believers, meeting their felt needs through prayer, and prophetically proclaiming that those needs have been met,” shared Spencer.

Because there is not any staff participation in the group and they meet after school, Spencer did not necessarily need to receive the permission from the faculty. But Principal Tom Albertson has been very supportive said Spencer. The group, which is focused on bettering the environment and blessing the school and region, is comprised of both male and female students who meet each Tuesday at 2:45 after school. According to Spencer, the students he has reached out to are very supportive of what he is doing. “Especially considering the suicides that have happened in the last year,” said Spencer. While Spencer leads the group, his friend Parker Mayo has been a huge part of it and has contributed a lot of time. “He was there

when I got the initial vision,” said Spencer of his friend. “We both share the same passion for the high school and for the area.” According to Parker, the numbers vary with anywhere from three to five students participating at a time. Spencer admits that the separation between church and state makes it difficult to get teachers and faculty on board, but said thankfully the students don’t necessarily need permission to pray over the halls and bless the school. “I believe that because we are registered students at Sandpoint High School, we have

whole new dimension to the stress of being a teenager. But thankfully there are students like Spencer who are doing their part to positively impact not only the school and students, but the community as a whole. “Death is a part of life, it’s simply inevitable. The suicides the students and community have faced in the last year have been incredibly difficult for me personally as well as many others,” shared Spencer. “I know off the top of my head that Parker and I have really felt the effects and are still dealing with them today. LET YOUR CREATIVITY FLOW

Local studio a favorite for aspiring artists BY PATTY HUTCHENS

WHEN MY “CRAFTY” FRIENDS suggested we get together for an evening at Pottery Bug for a night of arts and crafts, wine, and laughter, my immediate response was, “I’m not artistic!” But I quickly discovered artistic talent is not a prerequisite to creating fun, whimsical pottery at the local Pottery Bug. That is in large part to owner Gena Gibson who provides all the tools and assistance necessary to guide you in your creativity.

in May. If interested, more details including costs and specific theme projects will be available on their website, www.potterybugstudio.com and also on their Facebook page. Gibson has thoroughly enjoyed helping residents of North Idaho explore their creative side. She has lived in the area for 13 years, moving here from Boise after visiting her parents who are Sandpoint residents. She loves the people of Sandpoint and has enjoyed giving back to the community by providing support to local school fundraising events as well as participating in the Bonner Community Food Bank’s Empty Bowls project. “We have also participated in the Harvest Festival at Hickey farms for the past two years,” said Gibson.

Gibson opened the Pottery Bug on April 1, 2013. Now, three years later, she relocated to Pioneer Square on Highway 2 and celebrated her grand re-opening last month. At Pottery Bug, Gibson provides a vast selection of fun and functional pottery to paint. From serving platters to photo frames to teapots, there is literally something for all ages.

Gibson’s desire to open the Pottery Bug three years ago is something she attributes to a collaboration with her sister, Jan Korsten, a resident of the Spokane Valley. “She opened a studio in Otis Orchards (Wash.) in May 2012 and had so much fun that I opened our second studio in Sandpoint just a year later,” said Gibson.

“This spring we are adding canvas painting and board art to our studio and have dabbled in fused glass classes on occasion,” said Gibson. “We have a wonderful space for birthday parties, for both kids and adults, and have had bridal showers, corporate Christmas parties, school field trips and summer art camp in our studio.”

In addition to her family who has provided her with inspiration and support, Gibson said she would not be so successful if it weren’t for the people in the place she calls home. “We wouldn’t be in business if it weren’t for the great support of the entire Sandpoint community,” she said.

As this area’s only paint your own pottery studio, the Pottery Bug welcomes people of all ages and artistic ability. Here, friends and family congregate to relax, make memories and let their creativity flow.

Gibson invites everyone to visit her Sandpoint studio in its new location in Pioneer Square. Her studio hours are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 11am to 6pm. Closed Thursday. Friday 11am to 8pm, Saturday 11am to 6pm, and Sunday 1 to 5pm.

This spring, Gibson is excited to introduce some new do-it-yourself design projects with complete instructions and tips so anyone can create his or her own masterpiece. “We highlight new techniques and projects every month and have some great gift ideas for teacher appreciation and Mother’s Day coming up this month,” said Gibson.

And as far as my girls’ night out, at the end I was able to exclaim enthusiastically that maybe I am crafty after all! And I have a beautiful plate to prove it!

The Pottery Bug hosts summer art camps for kids that will start in June. Art classes will be offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 1 to 2:30 pm. “We’ll have seven weeks of pottery, fused glass, canvas and craft projects for kids of all ages,” said Gibson, who encourages families to sign up early, as there is limited space. Early registration will begin

ome people think the 1950s are played out as a decade, that the glorification of the supposed “golden era” of America is unjustified. I get that. Let’s be honest with ourselves, the people of America had issues back then; the nation as a whole had problems. Calling it the “golden era” and pretending that it was a time of unsurpassable peace and prosperity is a bit off-putting. It ignores those who suffered back then and suggests to those of us now striving that the best times are past and never to return. Maybe we should drop the “golden era” tag.

S

That being settled, let’s loosen up a bit and move this conversation toward rock ‘n’ roll. Some praiseworthy stuff came out of the 1950s, stuff worth glorifying (Did I mention rock ‘n’ roll?). Lost In The ‘50s has been doing just that for the last 30 years here in Sandpoint. Now, in its 31st year, excitement surrounding this celebration endures. Why the 1950s though? If you asked someone what American era they would like to visit, you’re sure to end up with any number of answers. Period films and historical literature have depicted figures and events from almost every decade of American History. Is there something about the 1950s that resonates more with our contemporary national identity? Is it just about getting lost in another time, another place, another world, that so intrigues us? Perhaps it begins with our ability to draw from our imagination and to mix that with our favorite memories. A bit of nostalgia feels good, especially when we recreate the best of what was alongside our favorite parts of what is. Then the page is ready to record new memories.

As I said, the ‘50s, like any time period we choose to glorify, wasn’t a decade absent of strife. It wasn’t the golden era of America. Is this revisionist history? Are we sweeping things under the rug? Or are we choosing to celebrate the highlights of our national history? I’d like to think it is the latter, and that there is no disservice in it. With that mindset, why not the ‘50s? If nothing else, there is at least one aspect worth reliving time and again – the music. Everything cool about the ‘50s, the clothes and the cars for instance, seems to resonate rock ‘n’ roll and revolve around it. The components of rock ‘n’ roll had been mingling for years before they erupted into the sensational style of 1950s rock and roll. Styles like blues, jazz, gospel and country are all credited in the formation. All of those styles benefitted from the rise of rock ‘n’ roll and produced stars who are still household names. Better still, rock ‘n’ roll is credited for breaking down racial barriers, becoming a fusion of not only musical styles but race, ethnicity and culture. I had the immense pleasure to discuss Lost In The ‘50s with its visionary founder, Carolyn Gleason. For over 30 years she and her team have poured effort and enthusiasm into the event. It has become an attraction, a tradition, and it stands strong as an all-around good time. Lost In The ‘50s was born out of the Carolyn’s dream to see some of the great rock and rollers of the 1950s perform live and the idea to bring them to Sandpoint as a fundraising event. It began as a fundraiser for the Festival at Sandpoint. The first year she was able to book some of her favorite artists, Bobby Vee and Del Shannon.

Since that time, Lost In The ‘50s has featured performers like Frankie Avalon, Leslie Gore, the Dixie Cups, Bobby Rydell, Tommy Roe, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, Little Anthony and the Imperials, and Peggy March. Carolyn admits that Lost In The 50s has surpassed her expectations. Remembering the first year, she commented: “I never thought it would go on for years, I wasn’t thinking past the first year. It wasn’t the thought process at the time. We just wanted to see how many of the original rock and rollers we could get.” Over the last 30 years, somewhere around 65 performers from the 1950s have played Lost In The ‘50s. It’s pure passion keeping Carolyn and her team

going year after year, passion for rock ‘n’ roll. That, and the feedback they get from young and old alike. Kids in particular have begged her not to quit. Even as it is getting harder to find performers from the era, Carolyn and her team have found ways to meet the demands of their audience. Here’s how it’s going down this year. The good times start rolling on Thursday, May 19 at the Bonner County Fairgrounds with Rock & Roll Heaven. This is a show featuring some top shelf impersonators. The event is said to sell out every year, so get your tickets in a hurry! And if you are interested, there might still be some V.I.P. style tables available. Come out on Friday, May 20 to the Classic Car Parade. Classic and vintage cars from every era will take a spin from Sandpoint High School

through downtown. After that, the free Street Dance commences with DJ Bashful Dan at the helm. Then, head back over to the fairgrounds for more dancing, this time to The Flamingos, Chris Montez, and Rocky and The Rollers! On Saturday morning, the downtown will fill up with classic cars for the Car Show. Witness downtown transformed. Be prepared to spend some time checking out some beautiful cars that will transport you back to every decade of American (and foreign) automotive history. Many of their owners will be there to share pictures and stories of the time and care they put into restoration. Saturday night, it’s back to the fairgrounds for another Show & Dance. Al Brady, a man who is no stranger to rock and roll, will MC. You’ll see performances by Chubby Checker, Johnny Tillotson, and Rocky and the Rollers. If you’re worn out by Sunday, the Aspirin RallyRun 5k Fun Run will get your heart pumping again so you can finish strong. Not a runner? Emphasis here is on the fun. Afterward, the weekend wraps up with a Car Rally.

Here’s how it’s going down this year. The good times start rolling on Thursday, May 19 at the Bonner County Fairgrounds with Rock & Roll Heaven. This is a show featuring some top shelf impersonators.

Maybe you missed the significance of the decade that brought us rock ‘n’ roll. Perhaps rock ‘n’ roll isn’t your thing. Well, how do you feel about getting together with some friends to enjoy music and dancing in the streets of small town America? You might find the ‘50s a worthy decade to reflect upon, and reliving it for one weekend a year in Sandpoint, Idaho a worthy and heartwarming cause. ATHLETES OF MARK KENNALLY & CORI MCCLELLAND

BY PATTY HUTCHENS

MARK KENNALLY: “ONE ONLY GETS AS far in life as they are willing to make the effort for – this is not only a lesson for runners but for anyone.” This is what senior Mark Kennally, a track and cross country runner, said is one of the most important lessons he has learned from his coaches. “Track is my first love, but when I moved to Sandpoint, the cross country team became a natural transition for me, and I have grown to love both sports,” said Mark.

In the fall, he plans to attend college in Bozeman where he hopes to compete in track and possibly even as a decathlete. As far as a career choice, Mark is interested in aeronautics and engineering. “I love flying and plan to complete my private pilot’s license training as soon as possible,” said Mark adding that he is also interested in software engineering. His biggest challenge athletically has been in overcoming his fear of not having the build of a distance runner. “That has been a blessing and a curse, but never an excuse to let up on running,” he said. Mark loves the competition running brings and echoes an expression of Steve

Prefontaine, in international track star. “A race is a work of art that people can look at and be affected in as many ways they’re capable of understanding.” This is something Mark aims for when he competes. Mark has learned a great deal over the years and one lesson he will take with him is this, “If one isn’t doing as well as they want to be doing, they need to assess their choices and align those choices with their goals.”

CORI MCCLELLAND:

Screened Topsoil & Sand Pit Run Drain Rock Crushed Rock Landscape Boulders

FOR SENIOR CORI MCCLELLAND, she knows what it takes to excel in athletics and academics. As Salutatorian of her class, Cori has run varsity cross country and track all four years at Sandpoint High School. “In my sophomore and junior years, my team won the Idaho 4A State Championships and this year we placed second. I was a captain my senior year,” said Cori who plans to attend Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah where she will pursue a career that involves statistics. “I don’t plan on running on their team, but I will definitely continue to run! After high school I want to run longer distances, so I definitely see lots of marathons in my future.” Her junior year was difficult as she found early in the year that she was iron deficient. It took her several months to get her levels to where they should be, and she lacked energy. However, she said her mental strength grew tremendously.

Deliveries Available

“The whole team cheers each other on - from the fastest to the slowest. We really love each other and want each other to be successful,” said Cori. Running has taught her to be confident, courageous and positive. “The confidence I force myself to have before a race, the positive thoughts that I keep throughout any hard workout, the courage to step on the line knowing that the next minutes will be some of the most painful in my life; those aspects become a part of who I am in my daily actions,” said Cori.

Cori credits her coaches Matt and Angie Brass with creating a supportive team atmosphere.

Left to Right

1 - Coach Matt Brass said it’s been rewarding to coach Mark for the past four years. “He loves to push himself in practice and in meets and runs with incredible strength and intensity. He is also a remarkable leader, nurturing teammates to be better runners and people.” 2 - Mark said he enjoys running as fast as he possibly can, either in fear of being caught or in desperation for victory. Photo courtesy Matt and Angie Bras. 3 - Coach Angie Brass said Cori is an extremely positive, happy, hardworking and dedicated runner who always puts her team first. Internet Connectivity

for Sandpoint

The Ting fiber Internet provider is scouting Sandpoint as its next “Ting Town” By Jani Gonzalez

ing, a company specializing in providing high speed Internet to small towns is considering Sandpoint as its next focus. The arrival of fiber optic Internet could boost area businesses and the local economy.

ABOVE “We’ve been looking at Sandpoint after being told by people in the industry that service was an issue here. It’s kind of an experiment here, and if we can make it work here, we can make it work anywhere,” Eisner said.

The company is currently researching the Sandpoint market by offering a preorder on its website. Interested future customers can pay a $9 fee online to show their interest. If Ting decides to establish business here, that fee would go toward installing the service. Ting representatives called their preorder, “a test of proof of concept” to see how many residents and businesses are interested in the service. Ting representatives held a town meeting of sorts in March at the Columbia Bank Center in Sandpoint to introduce the service and the preorder feature to residents and business owners. The turnout at the Columbia River Bank Center in Sandpoint was astounding with many people standing and asking about the service.

Ting’s parent company is Tucows, which started in 1993 as a software download company. They evolved into a domain provider and later a mobile service provider before adding Ting as its mobile service provider, and more recently its fiber Internet entity. As a mobile service provider, Ting’s goal is to establish true face-to-face customer service as opposed to computerized phone trees. As a result, they were named the number one mobile service provider by Consumer Reports a few years ago, dropping only to second place last year, said Adam Eisner, Director of Networks for Ting. Continuing to provide their valuable customer service is what led them to offer fiber optic Internet as part of their business.

They also offer a slightly slower rate for video streaming called “5/5,” which is 5 Mbps for upload and download plus the unlimited data. With the amount of bandwidth being used by multiple electronic devices increasing, unlimited data at a fast download rate is appealing but could also provide an economic boost. Faster Internet is good for business Having a more reliable, efficient and fast

“In looking at where to apply the business, we looked at broadband and the services are really poor. We thought to free people reasonably and do more for the customer than for the company – that’s how we got into fiber Internet,” Eisner said. Ting offers rates that have “no strings attached” contracts and no data caps. Rates range from $89 per month for residents and $139 for businesses. According to Ting’s website, they offer “symmetrical gig,” meaning that upload and download speeds are both 1000 megabits per second (Mbps) plus unlimited data.

Internet connection is no longer a luxury but a necessity. In business, every email could mean money and having a reliable service means facilitating that business’ ability to make its product or provide its service most efficiently. Fast Internet creates likeability too. It adds to Sandpoint’s ability to host new businesses, and it also raises property values. In turn, Ting, as a new business, would have an office in town and hire local installers.

“If you’re a company here, it’s hard to attract people (if) connectivity goes down,” Eisner said. “Economically, it would mean that Sandpoint is a viable community to attract high-paying technology companies,” said Paul Kusche, Director of the Bonner County Economic Development Corporation (EDC). “For example, Google and Amazon have teams that live in other locations. We could be having very skilled, high-level people living here because they could work with the high speed Internet we have.” It was the EDC that worked to reached out to Ting after individuals in the industry had connected with them informally. From Kusche’s perspective, if Internet connectivity doesn’t improve in Sandpoint, new businesses won’t come. “It’s that logical,” he said. How it will work There is no specific plan for installing the fiber optic cable that would provide high speed Internet in Sandpoint, but Ting has several options. The city has installed their own tube from which to pull fiber through to city buildings. Ting could lease some of that fiber to their service locations. Google has done the same in Huntsville, Alabama. “We frequently do business with mostly leased infrastructures. We’re not always interested in starting from scratch,” Eisner said. Or, Ting could install their own fiber using a hybrid approach by digging trenches to bury cable or installing it on existing telephone poles. One of the main questions asked by residents and local business owners was how far Ting’s service range would extend. While the final answer depends on the amount of interest generated in the coming months with Ting’s preorder, Eisner said that they could provide just about anywhere – from Schweitzer Mountain and up to 10 miles outside of the Sandpoint downtown district. “It will depend on demand though there is no official line,” he said. “There are no hard numbers. We’re just trying to get a barometer, and so far, the response has been great.” Service could feasibly begin by the fourth quarter of this year, he said. Small town focus Ting has made its focus small towns, called “Ting Towns,” particularly along the East Coast. They have successfully established

their services in Charlottesville, Virginia; Westminster, Maryland and Holly Springs, North Carolina. Sandpoint could be their fourth and smallest town if enough interest is generated. The company decided to explore Sandpoint after an industry leader from the area discussed it with them at an event last year. “We’ve been looking at Sandpoint after being told by people in the industry that service was an issue here. It’s kind of an experiment here, and if we can make it work here, we can make it work anywhere,” Eisner said. It’s something that Tucows CEO, Elliot Noss, addressed in a recent blog post on Ting’s website where he addressed the reason for exploring the company’s potential presence in Sandpoint. “Sandpoint is definitely a smaller market than anything we’ve looked at and really anything that any commercial provider might have looked at before,” Noss said in an online video on the blog post. “But Sandpoint has something that no other market … (has, which) is that the best Internet connection you can buy in

SandpointLivingLocal.com

48

Sandpoint is about 11 MGs/sec. It’s extremely slow, unreliable and expensive.” Although overhead may be more upfront, Noss said that the build costs should be similar for homes as in other markets. Ting likes to focus and get involved in the towns where they provide service. In some of their Ting Towns, they’ve supported local makerspaces where residents can learn technology skills. In Sandpoint, they would see where residents’ interests are and support a local endeavor such as that as well. “Those kinds of grassroots technological places are really important to us. Ting gets heavily involved locally – this isn’t something that will be monitored from a distant office,” he said. For more information about Ting and to preorder, visit ting.com.

A Walk to a Healthier Life Kaniksu Land Trust bringing ParkRx Program to Bonner County and beyond. By Patty Hutchens

LAST JUNE WHEN I APPLIED for a life insurance policy, the premium came back higher than expected. “It’s due to your diabetes,” my insurance agent told me of the results of the company’s medical tests. The news was a surprise to me. Although I had a family history of the disease and my blood sugar had run close to borderline in the past, I had not been diagnosed with the disease. And so began my journey of being determined to not fall into the same fate as many relatives before me, taking insulin to control blood sugar. I was determined to win this battle, having exercise, a diet low in sugar and a life with reduced stress as my newfound friends. The result? I was pleasantly surprised at what I could accomplish without medication. I credit this in part to a pilot program here in Bonner County being spearheaded by Kaniksu Land Trust – the ParkRx Program.

Permanente Total Health Partnerships (an integrated managed care consortium),” said Suzanne Tugman, Director of Community Outreach at Kaniksu Land Trust in Sandpoint. “Kaiser Permanente, along with the Center for Disease Control (CDC), had concluded that the nation’s population is getting sicker with one out of every two adults in the U.S. currently dealing with chronic disease.” ParkRx Program is a recent nationwide trend to motivate people to be active as the first approach to combating illness. After learning about the program, Tugman was intrigued. She researched how this could impact our local population. She interviewed 11 medical practitioners and reviewed the 2013 and 2014 Community Health Assessment that supported findings that over half of our local population with chronic disease does not participate in outdoor activity.

“I first heard of the ParkRx Program through Tyler Norris of Kaiser

ParkRx Program is a recent nationwide trend to motivate people to be active as the first approach to combating illness.

Now at the end of a seven-month pilot program where people tracked their exercise, Tugman has gathered much information. “When a ParkRx client is followed, we learn that many of the prescriptions that were given in the pilot were to people who live in our surrounding communities where there are few sidewalks that lead to open space or parks such as in Ponderay. Thus, health is also an equity issue as where there is limited ‘walkability,’ there is a decline in health,” said Tugman. There also needs to be education. Tugman said through the local pilot program, they learned that their highest population that received a park prescription was unfamiliar with where the trails and parks were. “They needed additional support such as maps, walking groups, information about what to anticipate and what to bring and wear,” said Tugman. “We also found that including information and locations about dog friendly trails and parks was a major plus. We learned that we needed to build a better trail rating program for entry level prescriptions and begin to partner with community programs that can assist with that larger population.” Tugman worked with the the National Park Service, the National Recreation and Park Association and the Institute at the Golden Gate to build a toolkit to assist in the movement. Land trusts nationwide can play a significant role in assisting medical practitioners. By having a central place that houses the program, land trusts can help to encourage people to get outside and provide important support and information. Tugman recently returned from Washington, D.C. where the Land Trust Alliance committed to taking our local model to all the land trusts.

and icy times, I hop on my treadmill at home – an investment that is far less expensive than insulin. If you are interested in learning more about this unique program, contact Suzanne Tugman at Kaniksu Land Trust. Get on your walking shoes and enjoy our walking paths and trails. There is something in our community for all levels of fitness. And stay tuned. Tugman said she is only just beginning her work to make an impact here in our community. “We are compiling information and hope to be able to identify the deeper impact this program has on the overall community. We are looking at issues such as the economy, crime, education and more,” said Tugman “We are working to build a radically inclusive program that all of Bonner County participates in. We have a wealth of community programs that can increase their reach by including them in this conversation. For now, Kaniksu Land Trust will continue to build this program and build partnerships wherever necessary.”

WHEN SHOULD I STRETCH? THE BENEFITS ARE BOTH PHYSICAL AND MENTAL

R E L A X M E N T A L LY

DYNAMIC STRETCHING IS IMPORTANT

H E A LT H Y T I P

BY BARBARA APARICIO, pta, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY

THERE ARE MANY DIFFERING thoughts going around today on stretching. How do we know what is the best way and when is the best time to stretch? Should it be done before or after exercising? How long should it be held and how many repetitions? These are all valid questions and concerns. There are correct and incorrect methods of stretching, and here is some criteria for you to get the most out of your stretching. First, why stretch? Stretching not only increases flexibility, but this can also decrease your risk for injury. Stretching corrects your posture by lengthening tight muscles, which often causes a person added discomfort and pain. Many people do not know that stretching also increases blood flow and nutrients to muscles; this can also decrease soreness in muscles and actually increase the things that muscles need to operate optimally. Another benefit for stretching is for your mind. Stretching helps you to relax mentally and emotionally; we probably all know someone who holds stress in their neck or their back muscles. Stretching also increases muscle range of motion and the muscles’ capability to gain strength. All of these benefits work in sync to increase our wellbeing both physically and mentally. Should we stretch before or after a workout? Stretching before exercise is more for preparing the body for exercise and increasing its core temperature. Stretching

after exercise is the best time to stretch for increasing flexibility and making those real gains that we are usually aiming for. At this time our muscles and tissues are warmed up ready for stretching. In searching many current articles, the consensus is to stretch dynamically before and statically after a workout in order to receive your optimal benefit safely.

Your Goals Are Our Priority!

Sandpoint’s Only Full Size Warm Water Therapy Pool

Dynamic stretching is stretching with movement. Examples are arm circles, leg swings and butt kicks. Static stretching is what most people think of when they hear the word stretch; holding a stretch 15 to 60 seconds for two or three reps to each muscle area. Lastly, when you are stretching after exercise, never stretch to a painful stretch, and never bounce during a static stretch. This is a good time to focus on stretching those specific sore muscle areas during your static stretching. The best overall stretching and exercise program begins with dynamic stretching and ends with static stretching. A good stretching program does not need to be lengthy, but done in the right order at the right time. This, added to your regular exercise routine, should decrease your risk for injury and increase the vital nutrients your muscles may be missing out on without a stretching routine. This will also increase your circulation (and nutrients) and correct overall posture, decreasing pain in your muscles. Happy stretching!

HEALTHY TIDBITS NEWS FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE BY DR. WILL MIHIN

W L LT -B H EE A HEYI N TG IP “Change is hardest at the beginning, messiest in the middle and best at the end.” ~ Robin S. Sharma MENTAL ATTITUDE: CAN COMPUTER use help with seniors’ memory? A new study (reported at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting, April 2016) suggests that seniors who use computers as little as once per week may help ward off commonly observed age-related declines in memory and thinking. According to the study, researchers found that seniors who used a computer during the previous week had a 42 percent lower risk of developing mild cognitive impairment, a condition that places an individual at greater risk for more severe forms of dementia. While it isn’t clear to investigators how computer use may help protect one’s memory, the researchers believe that being engaged, challenged, active and mentally stimulated can lead to a healthier brain. Health Alert: Lawn Mowers Pose Dangers to Kids. Reports presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Meeting last March stressed that children in the United States continue to suffer severe injuries from both regular power lawn mowers and ride-on mowers. Currently, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that no child under the age of 16 operate a ride-on mower and no child under twelve operate a push mower. Additionally, they urge parents to keep all children younger than the age of six indoors when any mower is in operation and not to

allow kids to ride as passengers on mowers operated by adults. A recent study found that over 50 percent of kid-related mower accidents resulted in an amputation. Senior study author Dr. Douglas Armstrong explains, “People don’t realize how dangerous lawn mowers are... The vast majority of the injuries could have been prevented if safety guidelines had been followed.” Diet: High-Fat Diet May Raise Cancer Risk. New research published in the March issue of Nature, suggests that a high-fat diet could increase the risk of colon cancer. In this study, researchers fed healthy mice a high-fat diet (60 percent of total calories from fat) for nine months and found the mice gained 30 to 50 percent more body mass and developed more intestinal tumors than mice on a control diet. Nature, March 2016 Exercise: Brain Chemicals Affected By Exercise. Researchers have found that people who exercise not only have better physical fitness than inactive persons, but they also have better mental fitness. Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, researchers found that intense exercise increased the levels of two common neurotransmitters called glutamate and gamma-aminobutyric acid in study participants. The finding offers insights into brain metabolism and how exercise could

become an essential part of treating depression and other neuropsychiatric disorders associated with deficiencies in neurotransmitters. Lead researcher Dr. Richard Maddock adds adds in the Journal of Neuroscience, February 2016, “We are offering another view on why regular physical activity may be important to prevent or treat depression... Not every depressed person who exercises will improve, but many will. It’s possible that we can help identify the patients who would most benefit from an exercise prescription.” Alternative Medicine: How to Reduce Standing-Related Back Pain. For those whose jobs require them to stand on their feet, a simple stretch can cut the risk for back pain by as much as a third according to the Journal of Electromyography and Kinesiology, April 2016. In this study, participants stood for two hours in two sessions one week apart. During one of the two sessions, they bent all the way forward for five seconds every 15 minutes. During the other session, they refrained from any stretching. The participants were 36 percent less likely to report back pain following the session that included the forward-bending stretches than when they stood still for two hours. Wellness/Prevention: Probiotics May Prevent Dental Cavities. In the future, preventing cavities may be as simple as taking a supplement to keep unwanted bacteria in check. Researchers have found a strain of bacteria that could keep bad bacteria under control and pave the way to using probiotics (beneficial bacteria) to prevent cavities. The newly identified bacteria is a strain of Streptococcus called A12, which was found to help neutralize acids in the mouth and also kill Streptococcus mutans, an especially harmful kind of bacteria. The findings are important because too much acid can cause dental cavities or other disorders. While the development of an effective oral probiotic is still a long way off, this previously unknown bacteria looks like a promising candidate in the future of dental health. The results were reported in the Applied and Environmental Microbiology, January 2016.

“I

have cancer.” These are three words that pack a punch and leave you breathless and dizzy. And those three words changed my life back in 2002.

and headed into the city to do our annual Christmas shopping. Driving down the interstate, she voiced her concerns about a lump she had felt just that morning in her breast and asked if I wouldn’t mind if we stopped by the hospital on our way to shop so she could get it checked. Don’t ask me how she got an appointment, or if we used the emergency room as these details were not remembered. Of course, I would drive there. After her test, we went on our way to shop and a few weeks later, those darn words reappeared again, “I have cancer.” Who really knows what had happened, but doctors thought that one cell had remained, and because she had not received radiation, it had begun growing, and it was even more aggressive than before.

I don’t remember much about the scene when my mother, then only 57 years old, spoke these words, other than she had all our family, my dad, my two sisters, my husband and I all together when out of her mouth came, “I have breast cancer.” From that moment on, life was a bit of a blur, and me being the type of person I am, I immediately went to the American Cancer Society and ordered a packet of information on breast cancer. What was this disease that I knew people had and from which both lived and died? I began to research, finding an organization called Susan G. Komen that began in 1982 provided information and funding. It had begun as people were just beginning to hear more about this type of cancer. Needless to say, after surgeries and chemotherapy, which took about six months, my mother was given a clean bill of health. She was to get mammograms every six months until she reached the five-year survival benchmark. And for the next six months, she lived with this thought in the back of her mind.

My sisters and I decided we wanted to do something tangible to eliminate this disease. Jenny and I both loved to walk, and I had seen an ad for the Avon Walk, a 39.3 mile walk in Los Angeles where Jenny resided. It required a marathon the first day and 13 miles the second. The Avon Foundation supported research and early detection with an emphasis on low income men and women. So, with a passion to kick this disease in the butt, we started our training and fundraising in earnest. Boy, did I have a lot to learn! I had no idea what mole skin or pronation was prior to setting out on this course; however, mole skin and the right tennis shoes became my best friends over the course of the next nine months. A key element in being successful at walking a marathon or more is training. Your feet must be in shape to handle the amount of steps, much

My mother and I were close and in my adult life we became best friends. There was not a day that went by that my mother and I didn’t at least speak over the phone. Since we lived a mile away from each other, many of those conversations were face-to-face. One day in November in 2004, we took off a day from work

FAITH more so than any other part of your body, and your mind must be focused on the end goal. As we watched our mother fight this disease, her unwavering focus to live was paramount and inspired us to keep going when we wanted to stop. Between, Jenny, my other sister, Amanda, and I, we raised more than $20,000, which was really a testament to the many people and businesses our mother had touched. Jenny and I began the walk on September 11, 2004 with a playlist from Amanda. As we walked the boardwalk on the beach, we thought, “Wow this isn’t so bad.” With rest stops every mile to mile-and-a-half, funny decorated vans following us playing music and hundreds of other walkers in the warm California sun, we thought, “This will be a breeze!” Actually, it wasn’t bad until about mile 21 when we heard a snap and Jenny experienced what we later learned was a hairline fracture in her foot. But she never gave up, and those last six miles as she limped along were pretty slow. The following day, Jenny cheered for me and I took the last 13 miles on my own. I think this is a bit like what my mom experienced. Her end goal was to live. But this changed as she realized it probably wouldn’t be a long term goal to one that she wanted to have one more Christmas together as an entire family. She never gave up; however, she had to adjust her goals as she fought the fight. There were times when my mother limped along as the cancer spread to her brain, her lungs, eventually to her kidneys and liver, requiring radiation and chemo that physically, mentally and emotionally drained her. She never quit cheering for others as she continued to run her small business, a True Value Hardware store, and gave back to the community. For Christmas of 2004, we decided to spend the night at our parents’ home with our families so that we could relive those early morning Santa arrivals. Two weeks before Christmas, my mother developed a cold, and with anyone who is experiencing cancer, this is not good. Doctors pumped her with antibiotics, and she improved. The weekend before Christmas, we headed to our annual extended family celebrations. On Saturday, my mother woke up feeling terrible, coughing, running a fever and just looked awful. We made the decision to skip the get-together on Sunday and drove her immediately to the hospital in Kansas City. The next two weeks were some of the worst but also some of the best weeks of my life too because they were filled with late night family conversations, shared memories and emotions. My mother spent almost two weeks in the intensive care unit (ICU) and made a miraculous full recovery from pneumonia. But after two days in a room, she slipped into a coma. On January 1, 2005, at about 9am, surrounded by her family, she passed away. This moment is etched in my mind forever as I could physically feel the sacredness and the presence of God as she went from this world.

Why this story about my mother and cancer? Why have you walked so many miles for breast cancer? These are questions I hear frequently. This story is the reason behind the miles! After the first walk with my sister, I crossed it off my bucket list and didn’t think about it again. Our family had walked in the Komen 5K walks since 1998, and when I heard that Avon Walk 3-Day, 60-mile walk was coming to Kansas City, I called my sister and asked if she wanted to do it again. She laughed and said, “No way!” Who did I turn to next but my loving husband? Oh, the things we will do for love! This walk was much like the other and in 2006 we started out on the three-day journey. With thousands of walkers, we celebrated, shared mole skin and laughed ourselves through the 20 miles a day. These organizations do a wonderful job with semi-trucks converted into hot showers, massage booths and our nightly tents in which to camp. The first night of this walk, Kansas City weather kicked in, forcing us to be bused to a nearby warehouse where we slept on the floor as the gusty winds and pounding rain fell. As we approached the finish line this time, at mile 60, we felt and heard rumblings, looking up into the sky we realized the Blue Angel tour was occurring at the same time! Now that’s a fly by!

Fast forward about a decade and a move to Sandpoint when I decided I needed a fitness goal. Something prompted me, and I signed up for the 3-Day, 60-mile walk but was trying to decide between Seattle and San Diego. Let’s see…deal with rain or have sun with tennis shoes and hope for no blisters. That’s a no brainer. San Diego won out. Again, my sister opted out and my husband did so as well. So, I asked, Barb Perusse, who loves to walk. She agreed to train with me only, but as time went on, I wore her down. In the fall of 2015, we headed to San Diego, both of us walking for our mothers who had died of cancer.

As we watched our mother fight this disease, her unwavering focus to live was paramount and inspired us to keep going when we wanted to stop.

BREAST CANCER FACTS: • According to www.breastcancer.org, statistics involving breast cancer include the following: • About 12 perecent of women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. • In 2016, an estimated 246,660 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 61,000 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.

This walk was much harder, and there were many times I wanted to give up as the heat, dust and pain of blisters descended. On day three, I cried while I walked, and I prayed for strength and inspiration. In the midst of all this, a picture of my mother as she sat in her chemo chair with this strange port in her chest and a smile on her face came to my mind. She had the option to give up and chose not to. She fought, and I was complaining about a few blisters and being hot and tired. Wow! This time the finish line was glorious. Although the recovery time was longer, I would not trade any of those miles and shared experiences.

• About 2,600 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in men in 2016. A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about one in 1,000. • Breast cancer incidence rates in the U.S. began decreasing in the year 2000, after increasing for the previous two decades. They dropped by 7 percent from 2002 to 2003 alone. One theory is that this decrease was partially due to the reduced use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) by women after the results of a large study called the Women’s Health Initiative were published in 2002. These results suggested a connection between HRT and increased breast cancer risk. • For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer, besides lung cancer. • About 85 percent of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer. These occur due to genetic mutations that happen as a result of the aging process and life in general, rather than inherited mutations.

LOVE I have trained and walked more than 240 miles in official walks simply for the love of my mother and the sincere desire for no one to ever experience cancer! All three of my walking partners have similar reasons. Regardless of whether you agree with the organizations, the awareness, education and early detection has decreased breast cancer diagnoses by 37 percent in the last 10 years. That’s a win to me and signs that we need to continue down this path. The thought crosses my mind occasionally that my mother might have been alive today had those advancements been available to her.

But the hope and reality of survival is higher for others because of these advancements. It’s another reason that I do the walks. Will I do another walk? I’m not counting it completely off although I’ve crossed it off my bucket list now three times! I may likely do so as my Aunt Ruth, my mother’s sister, was just diagnosed in March of this year. It’s my small way to help eradicate breast cancer! If you are interested in walking, a local, shorter walk is in Spokane. Just be careful if you see me, because I might call you to walk with me in the future!

Wine and Weddings A Perfect Pairing By Megan Olson

T

he Pacific Northwest is invariably known for its majestic mountainous terrain and coastal beauty. The Cascade Mountains extend along the Pacific shore from British Columbia to California creating unsurpassable landscapes. This extraordinary area has emerged as a prominent region that is home to over 1,000 world-class wineries. Of those, some offer not only prestigiously crafted wines to tantalize the palate, but an authentic experience to appease the soul. The Pacific Ocean and the coastal mountains certainly set the stage for a vision of exquisite beauty. It’s the perfect union between the maritime effect and this mountainous region that generates the essential mild climate conducive for growing quality grapes. Latitude 45 extends through the temperate regions of Oregon as well as the Burgundy area of France. It’s logical that Pinot Noir and Chardonnay would be the heart of Pacific Northwest grape cultivation. Washington follows behind California as the second largest producer of wine in North America. The focus is to create quality flavors over quantity. Not only is the Pacific Northwest home to award winning and globally renowned wines, the vineyards also offer an authentic tasting experience. Aficionados and novice

tasters alike can enjoy a hot air balloon tour with Pacific Peaks Balloons from April through October. The balloon ride travels over the heart of Oregon wine country in the Willamette Valley. Guests are able to obtain a unique bird’s eye perspective and then a tour of the eco-friendly Stoller Vineyards. The award winning estate manages every aspect of their wine production from cultivation to bottling. The Stoller Winery was the first in the world to receive the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification for sustainable and eco-friendly cultivation and processing. Oregon’s Willamette Valley wine region certainly varies from the climate of Central Washington. Maritime breezes tend to slow the ripening of grapes to create favorable conditions for complex flavors and aromatics. Oregon’s wineries tend to be smaller in size and are more decentralized than those of California and Washington. Evening Land Vineyard is the archetype example of a premier Oregon winery. The vineyard’s pinot noir was ranked No. 3 on Wine Spectator’s 2015’s top 100 best wines in the world. Evening Land certainly has put Oregon on the map as a formidable contender in the wine industry. The Columbia River is the largest river in

the Pacific Northwest and flows partially through the fruitful Columbia Valley that is comprised of approximately 11 million acres. The Columbia Valley is perhaps the most recognizable wine region in the U.S. after Napa Valley. This region extends in a triangular shape between the Oregon border, Washington, and Idaho. It has been coined as “The Mothership” of Washington viticulture as it makes up about one-third of Washington state.

country theme that includes “cowboy limo” tours and horseback winery rides. The cowboy limo is an open-air hayride tour of the vineyard with tasting stops. The horseback riding tour includes basic riding techniques as well as a tour and taste of the vineyard. As the season approaches, scenic wineries and weddings pair quite nicely. Novelty Hill Januik Winery in Woodinville, Washington takes the cake when it comes to providing an authentic and breath-taking wedding venue. Woodinville is nestled 13 miles to the north of Seattle, and this winery is renowned for its award winning Cabernet Sauvignon. The bridal party can reserve the entire venue which accommodates up to 120 guests. The culinary team prepares and serves a tantalizing meal infused by the estate’s wine. By evening, the fireplaces are lit to create an illuminated ambiance to complete a perfect and romantic day.

This valley is relatively arid and receives an average of six to eight inches of rainfall per year. Grapes for Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling and Chardonnay do exceedingly well in this irrigated and relatively controllable climate to produce an abundance of quality wines. If the heights of a hot air balloon ride aren’t alluring and have wine connoisseurs looking sideways, a sophisticated vineyard bed and breakfast in the heart of wine country is the way to go. The Girasol Inn in Walla Walla, Washington has been esteemed as being one of the best B&B vineyard experiences in the world. Walla Walla is situated near the Oregon border and is about 240 miles east of Portland. The arid climate for this area allows for a variety of grapes to flourish. The owners planted Syrah, Sangiovese and Viognier in 2006, and the Inn was completed in 2007. The awe-inspiring backdrop and wine flavors have visitors making comparisons to Tuscany. Walla Walla is home to nearly 140 wineries and is included in the Columbia Valley region. The Cherry Wood Bed and Breakfast (and Barn) in the Yakima Valley is another distinct wine tasting opportunity. The B&B has a

The Pacific Northwest has emerged as a serious contender for the production of quality wine. The numbers of wineries in Washington have increased by 400 percent in the last 10 years. This agricultural shift draws in over two million visitors to the wine country each year, which is a multi-million dollar tourism profit. The ideal climate and longer hours of daylight foster an optimal growing season for grapes. The Pacific Northwest not only offers a multitude of rich flavors and award-winning wines, it also offers genuine winery experiences from exciting hot air balloon rides, unique B&Bs, and romantic wedding venues. It is safe to say that there is something for every palate.

Wedding Cakes This is one area that allows the couple to be as creative as they want! No longer are couples opting for the traditional wedding cake; instead, they are implementing unique creations that include metallic, painted, ruffled and “naked” cakes. Metallic cakes with an art-deco look are especially popular, including geometric shapes that give it a modern feel. Ruffled cakes offer a more elegant look. Naked cakes, which do not have frosting on the sides, expose the cake and filling. And whether it is subtle decorations or solid colored layers, painted wedding cakes are a popular trend for many couples. Be creative and have fun! It’s your special day! Photo by LiLi Wedding Photography. Cake by 7B Custom Cakes and staging by Blooming Event Design.

Lighting... Both functional and decorative, lighting can literally transform your venue for either your wedding or reception into a magical place providing a romantic feel to your already special day. If you are in an outdoor and open area, it can feel large and vast. Lighting can be used to not only define your specific space but can also make it feel more intimate. Luminaries are a great and inexpensive way to help light up an outdoor path. Do you have an outdoor tent? String lighting from above to provide an elegant atmosphere. Greenery If you want to be a little less traditional in not only your wedding décor, but also your floral arrangements, try “going green.” Using greenery is a great way to tie all of your decorations together – from tabletop centerpieces to a trellis to arrangements placed at the altar and even as cake decorations. You can either combine the leaves of things such as mint, rosemary and ferns with larger and bolder plant leaves or intersperse them with floral arrangements. Any way you utilize the greenery, it is bound to bring a beautiful and lush look to the venue at an affordable price! Photo (right) by LiLi Wedding Photography, cake and greenery styled by Petal Talk, on location at The Lodge at Sandpoint. Staging by Blooming Event Design.

Wine Barrels Whether it is as a planter or a stand for your wedding cake, using wine barrels in both a functional and decorative way is a wonderful way to add a rustic yet elegant look to your venue. Many utilize a single barrel as a base for a table for those who are mingling, drinking cocktails and enjoying appetizers. Cut one in half, and you have a perfect side table. Others have even used a wine barrel for a guest book, allowing their guests to write their names on it providing the couple with a keepsake they can cherish forever. The possibilities are endless! PLENTY OF GREAT TASTES

N

APA AND SONOMA VALLEYS ARE USUALLY TOP of mind when it comes to touring wine country, and why not? For decades, these California valleys have been the quintessential landmark for the American vintner and wine enthusiasts. Today, the region produces some of the more recognizable American wine labels and there are 525 vintners operating in the Napa Valley alone. It’s an immensely popular travel destination, but you don’t have to road trip it all the way to California to find some of the best wines in the country. Washington is catching up to California in the race for the title of Wine Country USA. The growing conditions across the central part of the state mimic that of some of the oldest vineyards in Europe and as the growth and expansion of the wine industry has accelerated, former dusty farm towns have become blossoming tourist destinations. All across the state, you’ll find a wide range of tasting rooms and varietals plus plenty of fun weekend destinations. According to the Washington Wine Commission, in 1996 there were 80 wineries producing about 35,000 tons per year. Flash forward twenty years to today, and there are nearly 900 wineries putting out 222,000 tons - it’s an incredible growth for such a short period. The amount of acreage for growing wine grapes has nearly tripled in that time, and there are currently 13 regions recognized by the federal government as American Viticultural Areas. Washington is second only to California in premium wine production with approximately 16-million cases going out this year. The total economic impact of the wine industry is more than $5 billion annually. While the bulk of the grapes are grown in the central and eastern parts of the state, there are wineries throughout, making a wine tasting weekend easy no matter where you’re starting from. The Puget Sound Region While only about 200 acres of grapes are grown here, many are surprised to learn that there are nearly 45 wineries from the Canadian border to south of Olympia. Although smaller in size, you will often find unique wines rarely seen elsewhere in the state because of the wetter growing conditions found here. Pinot Noir and Riesling are the most commonly produced, but you can also find Madeleine Angevine, Muller Thurgau, Regent, Siegerrebe, which are most likely grapes you’ve never tasted before. Seattle Wine Tours offers guides and rides around the downtown area tasting rooms, and just 30 miles away in Woodinville, you will find more than 100 wineries including the famous Chateau Ste. Michelle as well as small artisan vintners. Leavenworth This Bavarian town nestled in the mountains northwest of Wenatchee is a popular weekend getaway for visitors from both sides of the state. THE FAR EASTERN CORNER OF THE STATE IS TRULY BECOMING A WORLD FAMOUS REGION AS EVIDENCED BY THE MORE THAN 200 WINERIES OPERATING IN AND AROUND WALLA WALLA.

from all over for the famous Oktoberfest, summer adventure, winter Christmas celebrations and of course wine tasting. One great benefit to wine tasting in Leavenworth is that the majority of the tasting rooms are all within walking distance of each other, eliminating the need for transportation. Those who do want to venture off to wineries outside of town can hire limos or buses, depending on group size. With so much else to do here, Leavenworth makes for a great trip with family or friends with time to fit in a few tastings here and there. If you find that most of the hotels, condos and vacation rentals are booked out, you can still find plenty of great tasting rooms in nearby Wenatchee. Shuttles run daily between the two towns allowing you easy access to both destinations. The Columbia Valley Encompassing almost a third of the state’s land this is where the overwhelming majority of grapes are grown, 11-million acres to be exact. About 30 different varieties of grapes are planted in the region. The most popular wines to come from this area are Cabernet Sauvignon followed by Merlot, Chardonnay, Riesling and Syrah. While the Cascade Mountains see a generous amount of rain each year, they stop many weather systems from reaching the central part of the state. In fact, much of the Columbia Valley receives just 6 to 8 inches of rain per year and more than 300 days of sunshine, allowing for a growing season of up to 200 days. Winemakers from as far away as Italy and Australia have moved to the area for its renowned growing conditions. Located within the Valley are Ellensburg, Yakima, the Tri-Cities, and further north, Coulee City and Grand Coulee. Walla Walla Valley The far eastern corner of the state is truly becoming a world famous region as evidenced by the more than 200 wineries operating in and around Walla Walla. There is an incredible variety of experiences to be had here from tasting rooms playing rock music to Cayuse Cellars which only opens its downtown tasting room one day a year to exclusive club members. What is truly unique about Walla Walla is how close you are to so many wineries. Those wanting to stay downtown can find enough places to try for a long weekend or more. Just ten minutes from

SandpointLivingLocal.com

96

town are dozens of more tasting rooms, and there are several shuttle services for hire that can plan a custom experience based on your tastes. Spring and fall barrel release weekends bring in an influx of visitors so be prepared to make reservations on these popular weekends and book your stay well in advance. A short drive up the road to Dayton, you will find a less crowded version of Walla Walla and some very impressive wines as well. Spokane With the popularity of courses in winemaking offered at Washington State University, many Coug grads are staying close to home and opening new wineries in and around Spokane. The Cork District offers visitors a map to area wineries as more pop up each year. Arbor Crest is situated above town with great views of the area, and a trip north of town to Green Bluff you will encounter several more wineries as well as a conglomerate of farms featuring different pick-your-own fruits, crafts and fun activities for the kids. Wine tasting can often get a bad rap as something pretentious and intimidating if you don’t know much about it. While there are rooms that cater to this crowd across the state, generally you will find fun, knowledgeable vintners ready to help answer your questions. You don’t have to like everything and if something isn’t your favorite or you want to try a few extras without the effects of consuming mass quantities, don’t be afraid to pour your remaining taste out. Generally speaking, tastings run $5 to $15 and that fee is refunded if you purchase a bottle on-site. With nearly 900 options across the state you’re sure to find something that fits your palate. It’s truly impressive to see such immense growth in the industry in just the past 20 years and even better that some of the best wine not just in the country but around the globe, can be found right in your own backyard. Whether you’re a connoisseur or just starting to move from a wine box to a bottle, you’ll find fun, knowledge and perhaps a new favorite no matter where you decide to go.

THE BENEFITS OF CHOCOLATE! COME HUNGRY!

LET’S FACE IT, when we hear that there are benefits to eating chocolate, we begin to pay close attention. After all, who doesn’t love to take a break from the leafy green vegetables and indulge in chocolate once in awhile? So what is it that makes the delectable delight healthy? It’s the cacao which is packed with healthy chemicals like such as flavonoids and theobromine. But the problem is that cacao alone is bitter and chalky. That’s where the milk, sugar and butter come in. While it makes the cacao taste good, it’s not always the answer to perfect health. Experts advise to stick to healthy chocolate which is at least 70 percent cacao. And because chocolate is high in fat and sugar content, limit yourself to seven ounces, or about four dark chocolate bars each week.

Believe it or not, peanut butter can help you lose weight! Peanut butter has an enviable combination of fiber and protein that fills you up and can provide you with a fuller feeling longer. And it’s true that there is just something about licking peanut butter off a spoon that can make one feel decadent. But like everything else, moderation is the key!

Here are just a few benefits of eating chocolate that may surprise you! Those flavonoids found in dark chocolate actually benefits your complexion. Although it doesn’t mean you should avoid sunscreen, dark chocolate offers some protection from UV damage from the sun. The cocoa in chocolate actually has anti-clotting, bloodthinning properties that work in a way similar to aspirin, resulting in improved blood flow and circulation. A further benefit of the improved blood flow, particularly blood flow to the brain, have led researchers in the United Kingdom to hypothesize that chocolate may also increase blood flow to the retina, improving vision.

Spray a pie pan with cooking spray. To make the dough, place peanuts, walnuts, dates, vanilla, and maple syrup for the tart crust in food processor. If dough isn’t sticky to touch, add 2 tablespoons water. Fold in the chocolate chips. Add dough to pie pan and press down evenly and firmly. Place all ganache ingredients into the food processor and pour over tart crust. Cover tart and store in freezer for 2 to 3 hours. In a bowl, mix the powdered sugar, peanut butter and almond milk to create the peanut butter sauce. Once the pie is chilled, cut and serve pie topped with the prepared peanut butter sauce. Cut pie at room temperature with a slightly warm knife. After cutting, keep pie refrigerated or store in freezer for up to 1 month. Pie can be eaten directly out of the freezer immediately or thawed for 10 to 15 minutes before serving.

KICKING OFF THE SUMMER Farmers Market opens May 7 By Maddie Russo

THIS SUMMER SEASON marks the 29th year of the much adored, open-air Sandpoint Farmers Market. May 7 will be their opening day, and you can bet that all of your favorites will be there including fresh flowers, fresh produce, handcrafts, food, live music put on by the Coeur d’Alene Youth Marimba and much more! This organization is a grassroots, nonprofit association and is home to over 100 different vendors throughout the season. As the season progresses there is an everchanging selection of farm produce. There are a few farmers at the market who are certified organic and have signs noting this at their stands. No two markets are exactly the same, so visit often to enjoy everything the market has to offer. The special events for this market season include Customer Appreciation Day, Anniversary Celebration, Kids’ Day, Taste of the Market, and Harvest Fest. In November, they will also be holding the The Farmers’ Market at Forrest M. Bird Charter School. The music lineup for May in chronological order includes, the Coeur d’Alene Youth Marimba, Mike Ross, Ruff Shodd, Chris Paradis, Doug Bond, Scott Reid and Jake Robin. The lineup for June has yet to be determined and if you are interested in performing, please contact Larry at entsforpeace@gmail.com. For a taste of some of the vendors, here is a very condensed list of some of the local, fresh foods that you will be choosing from : Avalon Farms, GreenTree Naturals, Pack River Yaks, Red Ace Apiaries, Sandpoint Chicken Guy, Shingle Mill Blueberry Farm, Terra Bella, Pine Street Bakery and Glen’s Bread. The market is held on Wednesdays from 3pm to 5:30pm and Saturdays from 9am to 1pm in downtown at Farmin Park at Oak Street and around the fountain at Jeff Jones Square.
