We at Living Local Magazines are so grateful for our small business community. We have the chance every day to interact with the key players in our local economy. More money spent at local retailers and small businesses means more money flows back into our economy, trickling down and helping those less fortunate than ourselves. While we are blessed to live in a beautiful community, there are things about our town that are not visible to everyone. There are children who go to school each day hungry. Families who have faced unemployment, poverty and homelessness. This is the reality. It is easy to get engrossed in all of the holiday planning that we often forget to stop and be truly aware of those less fortunate. The good news is there are many ways in which each of us can help. Next time you are at the store, put a few extra items in your grocery cart and swing by the food bank on your way home. If you see one of the Salvation Army Red Kettles, stop and drop a few dollars into it. Better yet, if you have a child with you let him or her make the donation; it is never too early to teach the act of giving. Whatever you choose to do, I guarantee one thing – your act of kindness will leave you feeling more fulfilled. We at Living Local would like to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving and extend a heartfelt “Thank You” for letting us be a part of this very special community. Creating. Connecting. Living Local.

Practical Living

ESSENTIALS by Annie Nye, Interior Designer at Selkirk Glass & Cabinets, a division of Ponderay Design Center

SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY HOLIDAYS A GREAT TIME TO DONATE ITEMS TO THOSE IN NEED

MY KIDS THOUGHT it would be a good idea to share a room. They took the initiative and moved all their stuff into one room, set up the perfect sleeping areas and consolidated their toys. It was great! I was imagining an in-home gym space, an office area, extra storage room in that newly available closet, maybe even have an actual room for guests to sleep. Then two days into it, I went upstairs and all their stuff was moved back into two rooms. What the heck? They’d decided that maybe, after a couple of fights, two rooms was better and they could just have sleepovers once in awhile. Honestly, I think they fall asleep faster, get their homework done more efficiently, and can keep things tidier with their own rooms. But it got me thinking how great it would be to actually have that extra space. How could I get a space like that in my house without actually having another room? We need to be more efficient with our existing storage areas.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

21

PLAN OF ATTACK

My first plan of attack was to organize closets to create more storage space. I’m not talking about just shuffling boxes around and packing things away. I’m talking about using that space up high by putting in shelves, double hanging rods top and bottom to get twice as much lineal hanging space, and using the corners as well as the floor. Also, de-cluttering those clothes that we never wear. We all have those clothes still hanging in our closets. I read somewhere that you should hang all your clothes with the hangers facing away from you, then as you wear and wash your clothes, turn them around. After a few months, the hangers still facing away from you are clothes that you should purge. I tried it and did get rid of a bag of clothes, but still have some hanging away from me that I can’t let go of. Donating items locally can be a great thing. I’m not talking dumping the well-used items in a bin and calling it a donation. If you’re like me, the kids have outgrown their new shoes before you know it and now you have a pair of

SandpointLivingLocal.com

22

sneakers still in great shape. Local places, including shelters for women and children, will take these donations where you know they will be put to good use. These kids need items and any necessities are welcomed. Plus, you can feel good that you are helping our local kids. Contact local organizations to find out more about how you can help through your clothing donations. But clothes aren’t the only thing you can donate. There are canned goods, boxes of pasta or unused paper goods that are cluttering your cabinets. Donate them to our local food bank and help families in need. With the holidays coming up, you never know what just might make someone’s day. Basically, you are saving your own sanity by decluttering, but on a more important level you are buying local to support local, and donating local to help locals. Let’s support our own communities first.

• Protect your family. If something were to happen to you, could your family pay the mortgage? Could your children still afford to go to college someday? To protect your family’s current lifestyle and long-term goals, you may well need to maintain adequate life and disability insurance. Your employer may offer these types of protection as employee benefits, but the coverage might be insufficient for your needs. Consequently, you might need to supplement your employer-paid insurance with additional policies. • Invest in your children. If you have young children, and you’d like to see them go to college someday, you may want to start putting money away toward that goal. You can save and invest for college in a variety of ways, but one popular method is through a 529 plan, which offers high contribution limits and potential tax advantages. Plus, a 529 plan gives you significant control and flexibility – if you establish a plan for one child, but he or she decides not to go to college, you can name another child as the recipient. • Be generous. You don’t have to be a millionaire to make meaningful financial gifts to your family. For example, if you have grown children, consider helping them fund their IRAs. You can’t contribute directly to a child’s IRA, but you can write checks to your children for

SandpointLivingLocal.com

that purpose – though, of course, they are then free to do whatever they want with the money. It’s not always easy for a young person to “max out” on an IRA, which has an annual contribution limit of $5,500 for workers under 50, so any help you can give your children in this area should be greatly appreciated. • Safeguard your own financial independence. Almost certainly, one of the most undesirable outcomes you can imagine is to become financially dependent on your grown children. Even if you save and invest diligently throughout your working years, you could still be vulnerable to financial dependency if you need an extensive period of long-term care, such as a nursing home stay. These costs can be enormous, and Medicare typically pays only a small percentage, and usually for just a limited time. To protect your financial freedom, you should explore ways of addressing long-term care costs. A financial professional can explain those alternatives that may be appropriate for your situation. • Communicate your wishes to your family. At some point in your life, you will need to draw up your estate plans, which could include a will, a living trust, a durable power of attorney, a health care directive and other documents. To be fair to your children and other family members, and to avoid hurt feelings, you should clearly communicate your plans and your wishes while you are still around. Thanksgiving means more than turkey and football. And if you can successfully apply the lessons of this holiday to your financial plans, both you and your family will have reason to be thankful.

YOUR TIME IS MONEY.

KNOW YOUR LIMITS

USE IT WISELY.

MAKE SURE YOU ARE ADEQUATELY PROTECTED. BY PATTY HUTCHENS

WWW.SANDPOINTLIVINGLOCAL.COM WHEN IT COMES to purchasing car insurance, there are many factors to consider. It can be complicated, and the limits you should have can vary depending upon the type of vehicle you drive, whether there is a lienholder on your automobile (lenders require a certain minimum of insurance), and your personal financial situation. When deciding on the types of coverage, you will also need to decide the limits you want for each coverage. The limits you choose are the amount that your auto insurance company will pay in the event you have a claim. For instance, liability limits can be stated as 25/50/25. What do these numbers mean? The 25 represents $25,000 – the amount the insurance company will pay for an injury to a single person in an auto accident; 50 represents $50,000 – the amount the company will pay for total bodily injuries; and the last 25 represents the amount, in this case $25,000, that the company will pay for property damage. Depending upon the limits you select, your premium will vary. Many insurance agents recommend limits of 100/300/100 or $100,000/$300,00/$100,000. In Idaho, the law requires that each person carry a minimum of 25/50/15 for limits of liability. Because you want to be sure that in the event of an accident you are fully covered for medical care or property damage, you want to get the maximum amount of coverage you can afford.

Liability: As stated above, this will cover costs (medical and property damage) incurred by you or the other driver when you, the policyholder, are responsible for the accident. Collision: Collision coverage is for accidents that involve collision with another vehicle or a structure, such as a building or utility pole. Comprehensive: This type of insurance will cover damage to your vehicle from things that do not necessarily involve a collision. This will include damage from hail, a tree falling on your vehicle or even vandalism. Uninsured / Underinsured Protection: In the event you are in an accident and the other party is at fault but does not have insurance or sufficient insurance, your own policy will kick in to cover the amount the damages exceed that which the at fault party is able to pay through his or her policy. But note that Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist limits only apply to bodily injury. If you want coverage that would include property damage, you will need to purchase Uninsured / Underinsured Property Damage Coverage. Be aware too that if you have a child who is covered under your policy, they may be eligible for a good student discount if their grades meet a certain minimum requirement. There are many options available when it comes to car insurance. Be sure and consult with your agent today to be sure you are adequately protected.

So just what types of car insurance are available? In addition to liability coverage, you will likely want to purchase collision, comprehensive, uninsured motorist, underinsured motorist and personal injury protection. Here is brief overview of some of the coverages:

SERVICE TO COUNTRY

VETERAN VETERINARIAN BACK ON THE BEAT BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL

PROUD

WHEN I MET DR. CHERISE NEU in 2002, it was under rather stressful circumstances. Having just graduated from Ross University with a Veterinary Medical degree and returning home to her dream job, Dr. Neu was subsequently abandoned by her employer after a few short days and informed that her job no longer existed. Within a week, Neu explained her circumstance and was quickly hired by North Idaho Animal Hospital in Sandpoint. Who might have guessed the career turn she would take 15 years later? In 2011 Neu became a captain in the United States Army.

coincidentally, both of her grandfathers, Sam Wormington and Bill Neu, were soldiers in WW II. Their experiences provided a foundation for Neu’s childhood perspective. Neu’s eventual deployment first took her from the South Pacific (2013), where she performed an assortment of highly rewarding humanitarian work, to this year’s stint in Kandahar, Afghanistan living “behind the wire” (2016). Black Hawk helicopter missions in full-body armor, nighttime rocket attacks and traumatic injuries to both soldiers and their dogs were interlaced with periods of oppressive heat, loneliness and waiting. Injured canine patients (mostly Belgian Malinois) received the full range of medical technology to treat the traumatic wounds, fractured bones, heat stroke, and the degenerative problems which occur in these dogsoldiers.

Why, many might ask, would the Army need a veterinarian? The deployment of official Army dogs dates back to WWI and has become of even greater relevance today. These protective canines act as sentries, detect explosives and narcotics, attack insurgents, and track combatants to name but a few dangerous duties. Soldiers who train and rely on these animals develop immeasurably complex and emotional relationships. In Vietnam, it is estimated that the dogs and their handlers saved over 10,000 lives.

Interestingly, tough medical and surgical cases were not the most difficult part of her job. The interruption and separation of family time nagged at her daily. Sleep deprivation, she followed one trauma case through over 40 hours of care without a break, was also among her toughest challenges.

Shortly after beginning her career at North Idaho Animal Hospital, Neu married Eron Singleton and started a family. In 2010 the couple relocated to Houston, following Eron’s career needs as a structural geologist. It was at this point that Neu joined the United States Army Reserve. Not

The Bond is publicly embraced by local author and television personality Dr. Marty Becker, who also works at North Idaho Animal Hospital. LIFE & COMMUNITY HEART AND SOUL

NINTH ANNUAL TURKEY TROT Giving to others as you run. By Melody Vanhorn

THANKSGIVING IS A TIME TO GIVE thanks for all the many blessings we’ve received. Families often come together over a big meal to celebrate and share love with each other. But what if you can’t afford to put on a big meal? The holidays aren’t a financially easy time for everyone, and many people end up visiting the local Bonner Community Food Bank to help put food on the table. The Bonner Community Food Bank is nonprofit organization that is a primary food resource for low income families, disabled individuals, children and seniors to receive a helping hand during times of need. Interested in helping out? On the morning of November 24 bring your non-perishable food items and enjoy a brisk run during the Ninth Annual Turkey Trot. Brought to you by the Sandpoint West Athletic Club and the Sandpoint City Recreation Department, this low-key race takes place at 9am on Thanksgiving morning at Traver’s Field on Pine Street. Participants can choose between a 1k, 5k, 10k, or just take the chance to enjoy the brisk

morning air as you walk or run with your friends and family. The best part of it all is that it’s FREE! In lieu of a race fee, everyone is being asked to bring non-perishable food items that will be donated to the Bonner Community Food Bank to help bless those in need. Last year’s event raised approximately 1,000 pounds worth of donations, and they’re hoping to get even more this year! So here’s your chance to get out this Thanksgiving and enjoy the brisk fall air while sharing the blessing of the holiday with the less fortunate in our community. There will be a costume contest during the event, with the winner receiving a fresh pie from The Pie Hut, so everyone is encouraged to dress up and have some fun as they run, but please remember to leave your four-legged family members home for the day. For more information please contact Sandpoint West Athletic Club ot the Sandpoint City Recreation Department.

TAKE THE CHILL OUT Keep warm with stoves and spas throughout the winter BY COLIN ANDERSON

WE ALL KNOW WHAT NOVEMBER brings in this part of the country - cold nights in anticipation of many more cold nights ahead. With the bounty of timber available, many in North Idaho continue to rely on wood burning stoves and fireplaces to heat their homes. And if you can’t remember the last time you had your chimney swept or inspected, it’s time for a call to Jakes Chimney Sweep and Mountain Stove to make sure you’re ready for the long cold nights ahead.

they carry a wide range of options and help with installation of both wood burning and pellet stoves. As the business continues to grow, Cliff and Dana continue to stand by the founding principles of the company. “We believe that we have been successful in business because we work hard to honor people the way we want to be honored,” said Cliff. “We value quality, hard work, honesty and we want our customers to have an excellent experience. We believe that God has blessed us.”

Cliff and Dana McDermeit own and operate Jakes Chimney Sweep and Mountain Stove as a family operation. Having purchased Jakes Chimney Sweep in 2006, the McDermeits saw another business opportunity in 2015 when they acquired inventory from Jim and Betsy Fulling, owners of Mountain Stove and Spa, and moved into their storefront at 1225 Michigan Street combining the two businesses.

Jakes Chimney Sweep and Mountain Stove also sells spas! What’s better than a nice warm soak after a day on the slopes, shoveling snow, or just to relax at the end of a long week? Cliff and Dana are authorized dealers for Marquis Spas, some of the top rated hot tubs in the country. Spas can be customized with different accents or you can go with a swim spa that allows you to swim laps in your backyard and afterwards calm the water and relax. They also sell the spa chemicals and filters necessary to service your spa.

In the showroom you will find a great selection of wood, gas and pellet burning stoves from the top brands in the industry. Working as a husband and wife team, Cliff and Dana lead a team of five guys and are up to date on the latest technology in heating. They listen to their customers’ needs and budget and match them with the right model of stove that’s best for them.

With five children of their own, the McDermeits enjoy working with kids and are very involved in their church and especially enjoy helping in the nursery. They are happy to call North Idaho home.

If your house has a wood burning stove and functioning chimney, it’s vital to have the chimney properly swept and inspected regularly. Over time, creosote builds up inside of chimneys and, if not properly removed, can catch fire to not just the chimney but also your entire home. Jakes Chimney Sweep and Mountain Stove employs a CSIA Certified Chimney Sweep who does the job right and can help locate potential problems and issues before they become catastrophic.

Whether it’s maintaining your current stove or seeking advice on a new model, Jakes Chimney Sweep and Mountain Stove has everything you need to keep your home warm for the coming winter and beyond. Stop by and see what’s new, and after seeing the beautiful Marquis Spas maybe you’ll stop waffling on that decision to get a hot tub as well!

GOOD NEWS Goodwill grateful to local companies who employ those with disabilities

Article and photos provided by Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest

DID YOU KNOW that October was National Disability Employment Awareness Month? Promoting the importance of embracing people with disabilities into our workforce began in 1945, when Congress declared the first week of October as “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week.” Following the conclusion of World War II, many people were struggling to find their way back into the workforce, especially those with disabilities. The name changed in 1962, omitting the word “physically” to acknowledge workers with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress extended the awareness event to span the entire month of October, providing more opportunities for education and outreach.

which are grounded in choice and the ability to earn wages,” said Laura Walling, Senior Director of Government Affairs for Goodwill Industries International. Goodwill employs more than 28,000 team members nationally with disabilities – nearly one quarter of our entire workforce. “Throughout its history, Goodwill and its independent member organizations have sought to meet the needs of all job seekers,” said Clark Brekke, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of the Inland Northwest. “To this day, we offer programs for youth, veterans and those with disabilities to reach their full potential through education, skills training and the power of work.”

Goodwill began integrating people with disabilities into the workforce long before our country as a whole recognized the value of doing so. We have long been an advocate for the quality, creativity, passion and commitment workers with disabilities contribute to our nation’s workforce.

As pioneers, Goodwill led the way, but there is work to be done. One in five Americans has a disability, and they make up nearly 20 percent of America’s workforce. Today, the unemployment rate for people with disabilities who are actively seeking employment is three times higher than for those who do not have a disability.

“Inclusion is an inherent driver of Goodwill’s shared aspirations for people with disabilities,

profit by having a wider variety of tools to confront challenges,” said Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor for Disability Employment Policy, Jennifer Sheehy. “Our nation’s most successful companies proudly make inclusion a core value. They know that inclusion works.” One such local partner is Papa Murphy’s. Patrick McCabe owns multiple Papa Murphy’s franchise locations in Spokane. In 2014, Goodwill recognized Patrick and his team as “Employer of the Year” at our annual Awards Night event. In the coming weeks, Goodwill will film two video stories of participants who have been employed at Papa Murphy’s for the last several years – Merle and Lindsey. Merle began working at Papa Murphy’s in the fall of 2013. He had been unemployed when he was referred to Goodwill earlier that year, although he had a strong work history from previous jobs. Merle was struggling to find long-term work. He is social, tenacious and has a great sense of humor. Abandoned as an infant, Merle was quickly taken in by a foster family who believes that everyone has potential. “We have a saying in our family,” said Florence, Merle’s

adoptive mother. “Never, never, never give up. If it doesn’t work the first time, try doing it different the next time.”

One in five Americans has a disability, and they make up nearly 20 percent of America’s workforce.

“We were lucky enough to keep him,” said Florence. Since that struggling beginning, Merle has thrived. When told by doctors and educators Merle would never be able to do many things, like get his high school diploma or drive a car, Merle’s family encouraged him to keep striving.

Today, Merle is working several hours a day, six days a week at Papa Murphy’s. He is now training new members of the team at his store. He saved to purchase his own car – a 2001 Mercury Sable, of which he is very proud – and to take driving lessons. Lindsey is also a Goodwill participant who has been hired by Papa Murphy’s. Lindsey was referred to Goodwill because she was struggling to find employment. She had recently lost her job, and when she applied for other work, she felt that her disability was causing doors to close. Knowing that Papa Murphy’s was a successful work experience for Merle, Goodwill contacted them again when they saw an opening for Lindsey. Lindsey also works for Sodexo on campus at Gonzaga university two days a week. She says she loves both of her jobs, and the opportunity she has to interact with people, and bring home a paycheck.

He is social, tenacious and has a great sense of humor. Abandoned as an infant, Merle was quickly taken in by a foster family who believes that everyone has potential.

“I don’t like just hanging out at home,” says Lindsey. “I love getting up and going to work.” Our country needs more companies like Papa Murphy’s and Sodexo; companies that give people who have a disability the opportunity to work, to enhance their quality of life and achieve their dreams, and experience pride, self-sufficiency and social acceptance. “Goodwill believes that by assisting all workers achieve their full potential, we are able to build stronger communities,” said Heather Alexander, Director of Marketing and Strategic Communications. “Once again this year, we are thrilled to celebrate the wonderful achievements of Goodwill program participants, like Merle, and all employees with disabilities, during National Disability Employment Awareness Month.”

UNIQUELY NORTH IDAHO Store offers distinct flavor of home décor BY PATTY HUTCHENS

FOR THOSE OF US WHO ARE BLESSED to call Sandpoint home, we know just how special it is. And one of the things that makes Sandpoint so unique is the shops that one finds in our community. Eric Blomdahl and Angie Obie own one of those distinctive stores, MeadowBrook Home & Gift.

products including foam used in upholstered furniture to the wax and fragrance oils used in candles. The couple moved to Sandpoint from North Dakota, attracted by the lake, mountains and sense of community. After living and working in the community for awhile, they decided to open a store similar to the one Eric’s mom owned back in the Midwest. But while hers was geared to the community in which she lived in North Dakota, offering Victorian and antique-inspired décor, Eric and Angie made sure that their store was a true reflection of life in North Idaho and allow their customers drive what goes onto the store’s floor.

Celebrating six years at their current location on Cedar Street Bridge and 11 years in Sandpoint, the store is a favorite of locals and tourists, especially this time of year when it undergoes a transformation with an array of Christmas décor. MeadowBrook officially kicks off the holidays on November 5 with its traditional holiday open house, but Christmas items begin to appear in the store long before then. Visitors to the store come from far and near and there are always inquiries about Christmas decorations no matter what time of year.

Keeping their inventory fresh and unique has been instrumental to their success. Rarely will the same piece of furniture go out the door twice. In a way to provide support to those who have supported them, Eric and Angie enjoy giving back to the community that welcomed them with open arms. They support various organizations in the area with donations, but admit they are especially drawn to Special Olympics, an organization they have become increasingly familiar with through one of their employees who has a special needs child.

The couple originally opened the store with the intent of being a store for locals and, while they have many tourists some of whom visit on a regular basis, the store is known for the work it does to help locals furnish and decorate their homes with everything from candles to furniture. With a unique inventory and custom ordered items from which to choose, MeadowBrook staff takes pride in being able to provide its customers with interior design consultation services, making sure their client’s home or business is a true reflection of him or her.

In the end, it is all about the relationships they have built that makes what they do so enjoyable. All one has to do is visit their store and feel the vibe and enthusiasm of the owners and staff and see the quality items they carry. They love what they do and plan to continue transforming spaces for years to come.

In addition, MeadowBrook carries over a dozen furniture lines and makes it a point to ensure as much of their product as possible come from the U.S. Angie shared that she is often intrigued by the back stories of companies as well. For instance, one company they work with does much for its local community and harvests wood locally, a philosophy she and Eric share.

TEACHERS WITH A BIG HEART

JAYNE STURM - TEACHING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY PATTY HUTCHENS

MAKING LEARNING FUN

JAYNE STURM teaches her students more than academics; she encourages them to make a difference in the lives of those in their community. A sixth grade teacher at Northside Elementary, Sturm has been teaching for 33 years, the last 26 of which have been at Northside. It is a profession that she finds gratifying. “What I find most rewarding is the ability to help students develop academic skills and work ethic which will propel them to believe that they can make a difference,” said Sturm. She said Jane Goodall, a world famous anthropologist and UN Messenger of Peace, influences much of what she does in her classroom. After having the opportunity to hear Jane Goodall speak at a teacher’s conference about the importance of empowering children to make both societal and environmental changes in their communities, Sturm was inspired to have her students participate annually in two “gifting” projects.

earning money to support local children who are abused and neglected. Northside Elementary principal Perky Smith-Hagadone shares that all who have the privilege of working with Sturm are inspired by her enthusiasm.

“We plan, purchase, plant, weed and fertilize these eight bins each spring,” said Sturm. “The students also wrote a grant to fund the planting of three perennial flower beds on the back side of our school. They maintain thee flower beds each fall and spring. Jane Goodall is the inspiration behind this project.”

“Her passion hasn’t wavered since her first year. She often comes to the office to get me when she is excited about what her students are learning. Her eyes literally sparkle with pride for her charges,” said Smith-Hagadone. “Just this Friday, she came down to get me so I could see the second graders working with the sixth graders as they dissected owl pellets. The learning was palpable. Multi-age students were hunkered over owl pellets and digging with probes to find minute rodent skeletons lodged in a coating of feathers. Not only were the students excited, the numerous parents who were invited to help and participate were smiling from ear to ear. Her love of learning is a magnet for all around her.”

In keeping with Goodall’s message about societal change, Sturm has had the students give back to the community of Sandpoint by participating in a Ski-for-Kinderhaven or Jog-for-Kinderhaven event with the goal of

As Sturm gets ready to retire in June, she shares that if there is one life lesson she would like to convey to her students it is this, “Focus on what you have, not on what you don’t have.”

In connection with the science botany unit, Northside sixth graders adopted the eight flower bins at the south end of the Long Bridge.

THE BONNER COUNTY HOUSING AGENCY (BCHA) recently expanded its important reach into affordable housing into Boundary County. As a rehab property buyer competing with other buyers, BCHA recently made accepted offers on two Boundary County residences in need of repairs. The housing agency is a nonprofit serving to acquire and refurbish residential properties that need extensive repairs to meet fair market standards. Already proven successful in Bonner County, the agency is actively expanding into Boundary County to help both property owners and potential buyers including tenants in some cases.

BCHA, in cooperation with the Idaho Housing and Finance Association (IHFA,) provides classes designed to help potential buyers qualify for financing. BCHA is a nonprofit agency. Its project focus is the acquiring of, rehabilitation of and reselling at fair market values homes that need rather extensive refurbishing. IHFA supplements BCHA approximately 14 percent of its budget from federal funds to assist BCHA with the paying of wages and operation expenses. Revenue made from resale of a BCHA project property go back into the process of normal operations and refurbishing expenses. A non-board-member Realtor, in this case Carol Curtis of Century 21 Riverstone based in Sandpoint, negotiates and performs purchase and sale agreements on behalf of BCHA, just as any buyer’s agent would do. Essentially, BCHA enters the buyer’s end of the market on an

the market in disrepair. In some cases, when a BCHA refurbished house is sold, it is the former tenants, if qualified, who become the homeowners.

Founding principles of BCHA recognize that home ownership generally improves neighborhoods across the spectrum by creating more positive environments in which to raise a family. BCHA recognizes that home ownership builds inner confidence for the entire family and thereby puts a majority of its new buyers on the track toward developing more successful life habits. Studies have shown that home ownership statistically creates greater

BCHA classes, in cooperation with IHFA, serve to educate would-be homebuyers by requiring them to complete a specified financial education through an IHFA course called Finally Home. sale first. But to qualify for the program, it must be a primary residence of a prospective buyer. In other words, the buyer has to take up residence in the purchased home. This is not for people who want to build a portfolio of rental properties. By the education and subsequent guidance provided in the IHFA Finally Home program, renters can and often do become homeowners. Code is the catch Building codes are set to protect the homeowners. As American homes age, they often fall into

disrepair. The BCHA program is designed to meet the need through funding provided by IHFA and other foundations willing to become players in the process. Under the terms of its charter, BCHA acquires the home, establishes a budget and refurbishes it to code. Fair market value is predetermined for the completed project and the home is then sold to a qualified buyer (one who has completed the IHFA course). So even a tenant, if they can establish adequate credit, can buy and own a home. Four points of buyer qualification Not only is the prospective buyer of a BCHA-acquired and rehabbed home required to complete the IHFA Finally Home course, they must also be able to invest $500 in the purchase of the home at closing when they enter into the purchase. The third point is, they must have non-retirement savings less than $5,000.

That third point changes for anyone over the age of 62 to nonretirement savings no greater than $10,000.

goes toward closing costs and down payment. Those requirements are one more reason why completion of the IHFA Finally Home course is a stipulated requirement.

The fourth point, as taught in the IHFA course, is that the buyer’s gross annual household income must be less than 80 percent of the Finally Home program’s median income as shown below.

If you have qualifying questions or wish to express interest and/ or learn more, you can contact Bonner County Housing Agency staff by calling 208.263.5720 in Sandpoint.

Is BCHA already active in Boundary County? Yes, BCHA currently has two houses under contract in Boundary County. Once those purchases close, these houses will enter the refurbishing process. If you set about getting yourself prequalified for home ownership under this program (it begins with the IHFA course), you can begin working with an IHFA-approved lender almost immediately to prepare yourself to become an IHFA qualified buyer.

Again that’s less than 80 percent of the above listed values for a good reason: The median income numbers help determine exactly how much assistance a qualified buyer can receive for a nopayment, no-interest loan under the BCHA rehab program that

ATHLETES OF CHEYENNE NICHOLSON & CLAY RASMUSSEN

BY PATTY HUTCHENS

CHEYENNE NICHOLSON: “ONE OF THE MOST important lessons I have learned from sports is that success requires hard work. A big part of sports is setting goals and working hard to reach them,” said Sandpoint High School volleyball player, Cheyenne Nicholson. “I have seen this over and over again both in playing volleyball and in my everyday life.”

Cheyenne has been playing volleyball on both school and club teams since she was in the seventh grade. She loves the competition. “My favorite feeling is when the game is close and the rally goes back and forth and then you finish with a win,” she said. Cheyenne plans to attend either the College of Idaho or Portland State and study pre-med and eventually pursue a career in obstetrics and gynecology. While she does not plan on playing volleyball at the collegiate level, Cheyenne shared that she would like to stay involved in the sport either by coaching or being a referee. Like most teenagers, Cheyenne stays busy

and said one of the biggest challenges has been learning to balance sports, school and a social life. “Volleyball takes up a lot of my time and maintaining my grades and finding time to hang out with friends was not easy, but I was able to find a way by knowing my priorities and utilizing any free time,” she said. Her coach, Erin Roos, describes Cheyenne as a hard working athlete who is always striving to improve. “She brings a ton of enthusiasm to the court,” said Roos. “She’s one of our senior tri-captains because she brings great confidence, leadership and energy to our team. I love having her in the program; she is passionate about everything she does, a gem!”

CLAY RASMUSSEN: AS A CROSS-COUNTRY and track athlete, Clay Rasmussen is an asset to his teammates at Sandpoint High School. According to his coaches, Matt and Angie Brass, Clay has a great work ethic, leads by example and is one of the team’s most prized hill climbers and story tellers. “He has helped to build the guys’ team into a regional powerhouse,” said Matt. Clay recently beat his personal record and is now on the all-time 5K list for Sandpoint High School’s cross-country team. “Getting there took a lot of training and effort not to mention mentoring and leadership from my coaches,” said Clay. In addition to track and cross-country, Clay is also on academic decathlon and enjoys playing the violin. To his surprise he was also crowned homecoming king. “I was not expecting to win, but it felt great knowing so many of my classmates voted for me,” he said.

Deliveries Available

Looking ahead to next year, Clay said it would be exhilarating to run for a college team, but does not have any concrete plans as of yet. “I have received a letter of interest from Linfield College for cross-country in Oregon, but I am looking into an in-state college, possibly Lewis-Clark,” shared Clay, who said he has in interest in joining the military. Clay said he enjoys being part of a tem and the dedication it takes to be a cross-country runner. As he looks back on his years working with his coaches, Clay is grateful. “Matt and Angie have taught me so many life lessons in perseverance and dedication. I think the biggest lesson I have taken away from sports is a positive attitude and the effect it has on you and the people around you,” said Clay.

regnancy can be a time of celebration for many, but for others this often joyous occasion can leave one feeling frightened and alone. Women, and often teenagers, are left wondering not only what the next nine months will bring, but how will the rest of their life change no matter what option they choose – parenting, adoption or abortion. For those in North Idaho facing such a crisis, they are blessed to have Life Choices Pregnancy Center. An affiliate of the national organization, Care Net, Life Choices Pregnancy Center offers resources and evidence-based education to empower women when making choices that will change their lives forever.

education coordinator, a bookkeeper and two Registered Nurses. There are also a number of volunteers who go through extensive training, including one to two months of shadowing current employees and volunteers. Much of what takes place at Life Choices involves making sure the clients have all the material they need to make an informed choice when facing an unplanned pregnancy. Part of this education involves watching documentaries on a variety of topics including managing money, searching for a job and looking for an apartment. “We equip them for parenting and for life. It’s not a handout but a hand-up,” said Denova. By watching the videos and taking classes, clients can earn points to shop in the baby boutique that is located at the Center. Some of the wonderful items from which to choose include diapers, wipes and gently used clothing. “We also have layettes which include everything the mother needs to take the baby home from the hospital, including small handmade quilts and a beginners’ Bible,” said Denova. In addition to earning points through the “earn while you learn program,” clients can also earn points by attending church or AA meetings if addiction is an issue.

The mission of Life Choices Pregnancy Center is not to convince a woman who is faced with an unplanned pregnancy what she should or should not do, but rather to provide them with the truth and all the facts so that they can make their own well-informed decision. “We share the evidence-based material that comes with each decision,” said Denova. Part of that information is given through free ultrasounds that are not only performed at the Center, but also in the community at places such as Clark Fork and Priest River. The traveling ultrasound will soon begin to visit Bonners Ferry to further Life Choices Pregnancy Center’s outreach. Allowing a mother and father visual information on how their baby is developing can have a significant impact on their decision. “Statistics show that when a woman who is pregnant can see her baby, with arms, legs, eyes, nose ears, etc. they actually are less likely to have an abortion,” said Denova. At Life Choices, the staff and volunteers also provide clients with replicas of babies at various stages of development, and they are true to the actual weight as well. “We show them as early as seven weeks,” said Denova who goes on to say that at that young stage, the baby already has a mouth and tongue, the muscle system is forming and there are 100,000 new brain cells forming every minute.

Life Choices Pregnancy Center not only provides support for unplanned pregnancies, it also provides support for women who have suffered a miscarriage or who have chosen the path of abortion; spiritual healing is just one of many of the services they offer. For a woman who has chosen an abortion, the decision can have lifelong effects. “Initially, a lot of women feel relief (after an abortion), but many later on will experience emotional stress. Some have suicidal thoughts, others become depressed or turn to a life of addiction,” said Denova. “We love our clients and walk beside them all along the way no matter what path they choose. We do not judge anyone.” Part of the support they provide is postabortion healing through a program they call Mourning Hope, an eight-week Bible study that walks the women through a process of forgiveness. “For women who go through the program, the transformation is miraculous,” shared Denova with tears filling her eyes. “They become more and more like a blossoming flower.” In addition to all the services and support provided at Life Choices Pregnancy Center, they are also a place to learn about other resources in the community for people in

crisis. Whether it is the Department of Health and Welfare, a local church, Panhandle Health, Love, Inc., Head Start or one of the Mother of Preschoolers groups, there are countless groups and agencies that work closely with Life Choices Pregnancy Center to provide the support families need. One may be surprised to know that Life Choices Pregnancy Center has been in Sandpoint since the 1980s when it began in the lobby of a church with a phone hotline. As the need for its services has grown, so has the support. Life Choices received its nonprofit status in 2002 and operates strictly on private donations from churches, businesses and individuals. “This community is so generous,” said Denova gratefully. Part of the focus at Life Choices Pregnancy Center is pregnancy prevention. In addition to providing education to both adult men and women, they also visit Sandpoint High School health classes and want to eventually also visit Sandpoint Middle School as well as Hope and Clark Fork. “We discuss healthy boundaries, healthy relationships and healthy choices,” said Denova of the information provided to the students. The Center sees an average of 36 clients each month, but the numbers can be as great as 45. “And those numbers include the baby. We always include the baby,” said Denova. Recognizing that these decisions include more than just a mother, Life Choices Pregnancy Center has a group of male volunteers who are launching a male mentoring program. The Center is open Mondays through Thursdays from noon to 4pm, and while they allow for walk-ins, they prefer people to make appointments. If there is one thing that Denova wants people to know is that people from all walks of life go through their doors – teenagers to people in their 40s; some have addiction issues, some don’t; some are Christians, some are not; and some have chosen to have sex while others became pregnant through sexual assault. There are miracles happening all the time right here in Sandpoint at Life Choices Pregnancy Center. Just this year they have had two women who chose life for their child through adoption, two others who have come to know Jesus and

two others who have recommitted their lives to Jesus. “And we have had several women change their original plan of abortion to parenting,” said Denova. In addition, seven women have gone through the Mourning Hope program finding forgiveness and hope and setting some of them free from not just shame and guilt but from things such as addiction. Recognizing the difficulty the holidays can bring for their clients, Life Choices Pregnancy Center hosts the Tree of Blessing each December, an opportunity to provide their clients with gifts to help ease the financial strain of the holidays and to celebrate the presence of Jesus in their lives. “We ask the clients for a list of their needs, including things like clothing, boots, and coats,” shared Denova who adds that they feed them, encourage them, love them and pray with them during this special gathering. Denova said all of this could not be accomplished without the work of many people.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

48

“The volunteers here are the heroes of this ministry,” said Denova. “The community of churches and individuals who support us are the ones who make this possible. Without them we would not exist.” Those at Life Choices are grateful for the opportunity to offer their clients the love of Jesus. “We know the best thing we can offer our clients is Jesus. We pray for them and share the good news of Jesus. He paid the price for our wrong-doing just because he loves us, not because he owes us,” said Denova. “I’m honored to be here. We see the hard stuff, but we also see God’s miracles on a daily basis.” For information on Life Choices Pregnancy Center, visit their website at lifechoicespc.org or call them at 208.263.7621. Health & Lifestyle DON’T BE LAZY

Are You Strong Enough? By Susan Moore, Better Gym, Gig Harbor.

ARE YOU STRONG ENOUGH? It seems like a loaded question likely motivated by dogmatic beliefs that everyone needs to be as strong as humanly possible in order to have any sort of quality of life, especially since this is written by a strength coach. But really, what is strong enough? Here’s the real question. Is there anything that you need or want to do that is being hindered by a requisite strength that you do not currently possess? Are you lacking independence in any part of your life? If your car got a flat tire, would you require assistance? If you answered “no” to all of these questions then you may actually be strong enough for daily life. That doesn’t mean that you couldn’t benefit from additional strength,

it only means you possess at least the minimal amount of strength to survive in our modern society. If by chance you answered “yes” to any of those questions, you my friend, are not strong enough. Unless there are circumstances beyond our control then just about all of us, no matter our age, size or gender should be able to obtain a certain level of independence (small children not included). If you have fallen into a sedentary trap, now is the time to do something about it. You are either improving or declining in strength at any point in your life, but you are never doing both at the same time. If you spend 99 percent of your time seated you are getting weaker by

How does one get strong enough? It can be a lifelong journey, but it has to start somewhere. the second. If you are 80 years old and sitting all day, most of your weakness isn’t because you are older, it’s because you don’t move and are starting to atrophy. In order to be strong enough, we need to keep moving. Getting strong doesn’t have to be difficult. I met a man once who was installing a fence in my backyard. He looked strong but was concerned that his 10 to 12-hour a day job and family responsibilities kept him from having the time and energy to get to the gym. His job consisted of digging large holes, mixing and pouring concrete, loading and unloading heavy pieces of different kind of fencing and other laborious tasks. My advice to him? Don’t go to the gym. We go to the gym because our daily actions, jobs and or habits are not strength-building and maintaining. His were. He had no need for training to improve his strength. But do you? Do you have a job that requires strength in pulling, pushing, bracing, creating and controlling power through and against rotation and loaded carries? How does one get strong enough? It can be a lifelong journey, but it has to start somewhere. You need to challenge yourself in some way everyday. I always recommend a qualified professional to help you in your process. Notice I said qualified. You want a subject matter expert in their field. Find something that is skill developing. Usually I try not to steer people away from any kind of workout program but we are talking about strength training here, not cardio. You cannot dance your way strong. You want to lift heavier things so it trains you to have the ability to lift objects and yourself

when needed in life. Make sure you lift in a program that is safe. You shouldn’t be risking injury and if hurts, you aren’t doing it right. I’m not a believer in “no pain no gain.” I subscribe to the philosophy of “no pain equals no pain.” Just because you saw something in a video doesn’t mean you are doing the movement like the person in the video. If you want to be good, get a coach. You know Russell Wilson has a strength coach and he has access to the same videos you do. Our country is inherently lazy. Not everyone and maybe not even you but for the most part, our society is always looking for everything to be convenient, ready-made and at our fingertips. Strength training takes a certain amount of dedication. We are talking about dedicating 4 percent of your day. If you have time to watch your favorite shows, play weird jeweled games on your smartphone or spend time everyday on Facebook, you have time for this. If it’s important to you you will find the time. Strong enough is doable. Strong enough is important. Strong enough will, without a doubt, extend your life and the quality of it.

HEAL THE HUNCHBACK IT AFFECTS MORE THAN JUST YOUR BACK

STRENGTH

BY RYANNE LEMON PTA, CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER

H E A LT H Y T I P WHEN THINKING ABOUT poor posture, most people think of slouching, with shoulders forward and neck extended to hold up the head. This posture is called Kyphotic posture due to increased kyphosis, or rounding of the upper back. Prolonged periods of this postural deficiency can lead to shoulder, back and neck pain, as well as decreased range of motion in these three areas. While this posture is relatively easy to see, there are usually many more postural deficiencies in the body that lead to this “hunched back” appearance which are important to address when thinking about correction. Although postural anomalies can be caused by anatomical irregularities (i.e., scoliosis), it is most common that they are caused by muscle imbalances throughout the body. We will focus on the most common scenario, which is caused by sitting at a desk on a computer for long periods throughout the day. In this case, the hips are flexed causing the hip flexors (psoas muscles) to become tight, and the hip extensors (gluteus) to become lengthened and weak. This leads the hip flexors to pull the pelvis into a forward tilt position. With this forward tilt at the bottom of the body, the upper back and shoulder come forward as well to try and keep the body balanced. This in itself leads to poor posture, and when you add in the forward position of the head and neck while working at a desk, the problem becomes even worse. Long periods of staying in this position can make a person go from simply being sore after long periods of sitting, to having an actual postural problem with chronic neck, upper and lower back, and shoulder pain. So on that note, when thinking about correcting this rounded shoulder posture, it is important to not only focus on muscle imbalances of the upper back, but look at

the hips and core as well. It may be wise to consult a professional such as a trainer or therapist to help analyze posture and find out where the deficiencies lie. Listed below are some ideas to get started with most common postural deficits: • Sit on a Swiss ball rather than a chair at work. This encourages good sitting posture while maintaining balance on the ball as well as continually activating core muscles to stay balanced on the ball. • Take frequent breaks to stand up, stretch and move around with long periods of sitting. Another consideration would be to get a desk that can be adjusted so one can work standing up. • Apply kinesio tape along the muscles of the upper back. This helps facilitate the muscles to maintain appropriate resting length by giving a tactile stimuli when the muscles are overly lengthened. So when the tape is stretched, it helps remind the body to correct posture. It is most effective to have someone trained in taping to apply the tape in the correct position and with the proper tension. If this is not an option, online resources can illustrate and educate different applications and techniques. • Consider seeking out professional postural assessment. A trained professional can determine where any muscle imbalances lie and create an exercise program to help correct the problems. It is important to address the problem before posture and upper back pain gets any worse. The longer the problems goes unaddressed, the more difficult they are to solve and the higher the likelihood that the imbalance could become permanent.

“You can’t go back and make a new start, but you can start right now and make a brand new ending.” ~ James R. Sherman MENTAL ATTITUDE: Chatting Before Bedtime. The National Sleep Foundation recommends the following for enjoying a bedtime conversation with your partner without it affecting your sleep quality: talk about the events of the day or lighthearted topics; avoid emotional conversation that can work you up; put off disagreements until the next day; and sometimes, just lying quietly and cuddling can aid in falling asleep. National Sleep Foundation, September 2016 Health Alert: “Smoke Waves” Threaten the Western United States. Persistent smoke waves from wildfires may increase in the future. Investigators examined levels of fine particulate matter in 16 Western states from 2004 to 2009 and estimated that incidents of two or more days of high pollution from wildfires will grow by 57 percent in frequency and 31 percent in intensity over the next 40 years. As a result, the smoke-wave season will likely lengthen by about 15 days in nearly two-thirds of the regions assessed. Study author Dr. Jia Coco Liu adds, “More people in the Western (United States) are likely to experience high-pollution episodes from wildfires, and the pollution

episodes are likely to be more frequent, last longer, and be more intense.” Climatic Change, July 2016

Diet: Going Paleo May Benefit Your Heart. The Paleo diet is based on consuming foods eaten by early humans, such as meat, fish, vegetables and fruit, and excludes dairy, grain products and processed food. Researchers asked eight healthy people who usually consumed a diet high in processed foods to switch to the Paleo diet for eight weeks. During the study, the researchers found that participants experienced a 35 percent increase in levels of interleukin-10 (IL-10), a signaling molecule secreted by immune cells. Scientists believe that higher IL-10 levels may protect blood vessels and lower the risk for a heart attack. American Physiological Society, September 2016

Alternative Medicine: Chiropractic Patients Get Back to Work Faster. Does the type of health care provider you see first have an effect on how quickly you can recover from back pain following a work injury? An analysis of data from 5,511 workers injured in 2005 revealed that those who initially consulted with a doctor of chiropractic for their work-related back injury—versus a medical doctor or physical therapist—returned to work more quickly and were also less likely to experience a second episode of back pain during the following two years. Journal of Occupational Rehabilitation, September 2016

Exercise: More Steps Equal Greater Well-Being Among Seniors. Being active can result in a greater sense of well-being for older adults. Japanese researchers analyzed data collected from 192 seniors and found that those who took the most steps per day were the participants most likely to be happy with their lives and

A look into the life of a police officer’s family By Lindsay Murray

SandpointLivingLocal.com

Few of us ever have to hold the only thing that could stand between a human heart and a bullet. It seems so thin, but it is so heavy. It’s heavy both physically and emotionally.

T

wo weeks ago, I went into our closet to pull out the pieces of my husband’s police uniform in order to make sure that everything was ironed and ready and that all of the components were there so that he could work his paid duty that evening. If you aren’t familiar with what paid duties are, they are extra shifts that we have counted on to pay for Christmas gifts and car repairs. We are blessed that my husband has the opportunity to pick up paid duties for the extra money that sometimes we are desperate for. I stay home and homeschool our four kids, and every penny is needed.

of pregnancy. I cannot imagine working nights at eight months pregnant. I can’t imagine, with my mothering heart, holding a baby that has passed away. Our first responders, both male and female, along with doctors and nurses face the horrors on a daily basis that most of us turn away from. I stand behind them and support them with all that I am, but this piece isn’t about them. It is about my guy, the father of my kids. I am writing about the man who has never once turned down a tickle fight with his kids even after the longest, most agonizing day. The man who, instead of being crushed by yet another sudden death, comes home and holds me and focuses on what we have to be thankful for instead of letting the darkness grab hold.

On this day, my husband had already worked his normal shift as a detective in the fraud branch of our fairly large police service. He had to pop home in between shifts for a quick dinner and kisses and snuggles with the kids before going in to work another eight-hour shift on very little sleep. This story is told hundreds of times, every single day by police families. The rushed eating, the kids crying about not seeing Daddy enough that day, the wife doing the bedtime routine alone again.

So there I was, standing in our closet, looking at a sea of blue uniforms, and I pulled out his bulletproof vest and I held it. Have you ever held your husband’s bulletproof vest? Few of us ever have to hold the only thing that could stand between a human heart and a bullet. It seems so thin, but it is so heavy. It’s heavy both physically and emotionally. I see his name, stitched over and to the left of his heart. When he was first hired, their names were on pins, but realizing that they could be injured by the sharp pin, the decision was made to move to the embroidered style of nametag. I see our last name, the name I took on the day that we spoke our vows – for better and for worse, in sickness and in health, in good times and in bad, ‘til death do us part. I see the name that our children carry. I find his black, police issued pens everywhere. I pull them out of all of the pockets. I find his forage cap (police uniform hat), and our toddler

Let me just say right now that this story is from my point of view so it is going to be about a husband and a father. I know wonderful female police officers who kiss their kids and husbands goodbye, who nurse their babies after a long night shift, who squeeze their growing bellies into their uniforms, trying to protect the new life growing there from the kicks of big bad men that are resisting arrest. I cannot even begin to imagine what it’s like to go to a priority call in the early stages

grabs it and runs around with it on her head. I pull out a black T-shirt from the large stack in his drawer and find black socks and make sure that he is dressed appropriately for the weather; it seems like he is always standing out in heavy rain, a blizzard or a heat wave. Have you felt how heavy those boots are? My kids slip their little feet into Daddy’s boots. Boots that have cut into his skin after standing at large festivals for eight hours straight. His eyes scan the crowd the entire time, on high alert, looking for drugs, weapons and suspicious activity. People come up to him and say things like, “Boy, you sure have an easy shift tonight.” He smiles past them, politely answers while never once breaking his moving gaze from the crowd that he is protecting. Boots that he has had to run in, through dark backyards while hopping fences, chasing boys 20 years younger. When was the last time that you hopped fences while the world slept?

up back on the road in a couple of years. But for now, he’s safe in his tie and shiny shoes. He’s home on time and has a normal schedule after 14 years of crazy schedules between the two of us. We chat as he stands at the counter and eats quickly. He listens enthusiastically to the kids’ stories of new Minecraft worlds and what birds visited our bird feeder today. I take his plate to the sink, and he goes upstairs to get his uniform on. Layer upon layer, he is transformed into someone who is either a beacon of hope or someone to be feared and hated by others. I wish that both sides could see him, chatting cheerfully with me about his day, while buttoning up his shirt. I wish they could see the man behind the blue. The man that I will worry about until I hear his key in the front door while our kids sleep. The worrying doesn’t go away with time. I will never get used to a text that reads, “I’m going to be late, we had a gun call.” I cannot tell you how many times I have paced in front of our windows, watching the roads become slick with ice, knowing that it’s three in the morning and that the salt trucks aren’t out in force yet. And while the cruisers have snow tires on, we can’t afford them on our family car so he will be driving home over dark roads in the middle of the night, exhausted. I often wake up out of a dead sleep and reach immediately for my phone to see if he has texted. Is he going to be late again? Yes, every shift is busy now. The world is very different than it was nearly a decade ago when he was first hired.

Obviously, we knew what we were getting into when he first applied to be a police officer. Back then we only had one baby, and I found comfort in the fact that if our babies lost their Daddy, he would be a hero. Just like with most things in life, we had no idea what it would actually feel like until we were living it. I feel like at this point, I need again to point out how dangerous the world is for so many people, but there isn’t enough time to do that in detail. I know there is pain everywhere. His uniform is pulled together now and his dinner is hot and ready. My husband is jumped on by four jubilant kids as he enters the door from work. He is dressed so nicely in his suit. He is in his second year as a detective, and my worry has been massively eased, knowing that he is mostly working in a safe office now. But we had many years of patrol, and he will end

I am sitting on our bed and am taken aback by how handsome he looks in his uniform. I still wonder how I got so lucky! We have 20 minutes left as a family before his second shift of the day starts. He could spend that time checking Facebook, but instead he kneels beside me and our four kids on the floor

and he chooses to pray our nightly rosary with us. This man, who is about to face the evils that we are praying against, is humbled, on his knees. I steal glances at him, deep in prayer, and I can never understand what could possibly be going through his head before stepping out into the night to be the one who protects the innocent while they sleep. Our 7-yearold son leads us in the St. Michael prayer, the patron saint of police officers, and I ask my reluctant husband if he could just sit with the kids for a quick photo on the couch because these days they rarely see him in uniform so I want to have a photo.

now, and I can’t afford to raise four kids on my own with our measly savings. The brutal truth is that I take this last photo so that I have an up-to-date photo in case the media needs it, in case he dies. This last time I didn’t have the chance to get the kids out of their dinner-stained pajamas so I edited it to be black and white so you don’t see the tomato sauce and peanut butter. He doesn’t know that my heart trembles while I take the photo; he looks so happy with his kids in his arms, and they look so safe wrapped under him. But all I can think about is “what if this is the last photo”… Grim? Macabre? Maybe. But I don’t care. What if it is the last photo? I would be so thankful that I took it.

He doesn’t know that I call this photo, “the last photo.” He doesn’t know that I have a collection, spanning nearly a decade, of “last photos” … just in case. There is only a small percentage of spouses out there that seriously have to say goodbye with their whole heart when their partner leaves for work. Do you know how it feels to discuss increasing his life insurance because the climate of the world is anti-police right

I would be so thankful that he spent those 20 minutes before leaving, on his knees in prayer with his family. I would be so thankful for those stolen glances at his perfect profile speaking the words, “…deliver us from evil…”

Respect. Honor. Remember. • According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, in spite of the danger and risk involved with law enforcement, there are currently more than 900,000 sworn law enforcement officers serving in the United States. This figure is the highest ever. Twelve percent of these officers are women. We are blessed that more and more people are choosing to go into this line of work and offer protection to our communities.

The worrying doesn’t go away with time. I will never get used to a text that reads, “I’m going to be late, we had a gun call.” Photo courtesy Lindsay Murray.

• Support can be given to our law enforcement officers through may ways, but one way in which everyone can participate is through the Adopt-A-Cop program. The program’s goal is assign an officer to a specific family, group or individual who will pray each day for the safety of their assigned officer. They can also send notes of encouragement to their assigned officer. It is a wonderful way to provide support on a daily basis.

• While the hope is that none of our officers will ever have to sacrifice their lives, the reality is that officers do make the ultimate sacrifice every day. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund is one way to honor those who have fallen in the line of duty. Their mission is accomplished through the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. and includes programs such as Officer of the Month and Officer Roll Call. • Social media is used by almost everyone in today’s world. And it is also another way to lend support to the men and women in blue. There are Facebook pages that you can join and learn about the difference law enforcement officers are making in the lives of others and offer support when those who serve and protect need it most. One such page is Stand Up America and Support Our Police. Check it out and offer your support.

My heart aches for all of the mothers who are tucking their kids into bed alone tonight. This isn’t us versus them. This isn’t my pain versus yours.

I was talking with a friend about this “last photo,” and she asked me to write this. She suggested that I ask all police spouses to share their own version of “the last photo,” to create a movement, to see the person behind the badge. Can you share this and ask those you know who are married to police officers if they are “OK”? Can you see if they need help when they are alone for the seventh evening in a row putting kids to sleep? Can you send them a message when the media reports another horrific police death because let me tell you, we all bleed blue and cry for those who have fallen because they are one of our own. I see my tears on their wives’ faces and my children standing beside the casket.

have learned to grow a thick skin. I don’t want to become a jaded police wife. We aren’t those people. My heart cries out for justice for ALL the victims and fatherless and motherless families. My heart aches for all of the mothers who are tucking their kids into bed alone tonight. This isn’t us versus them. This isn’t my pain versus yours. I just wanted to let you know that when you see a photo of my husband and kids on one of my social media accounts, what you didn’t know is that while I was taking it, I was hoping and praying that this photo would not become the last photo.

I wish that I never had to write this, but I am so thankful that I have this opportunity to open up about my deepest fear because the family waiting at home often keeps these things locked up at home because we have heard it all before and

Holiday

E D I U G L A IV

V R SU

Oh how the holidays bring out the best and worst in people. It’s a time for friends and family, gatherings of loved ones, and catching up on lost time. It’s a time for giving and sharing and people taking care of people. But whether we like to admit it or not, it can also be one of the most depressing, mentally draining times of the year; when life’s little stressors can be exasperated into monumental soap operas of drama. I’m no expert, but I’ve been through my fair share of holiday seasons to have a good idea on how to survive in one piece. From me to you, here are some key tips to keep in mind this year, and with luck, they’ll help you keep some of your sanity as well: Traveling and Eating Out Crowded airports, understaffed restaurants and slow service can bring out the worst in people, but you don’t have to be one of them. Most hotels, restaurants and bar establishments see a huge increase in sales this time of year but often don’t have the seasonal staff to support it. Instead of taking out your frustration on the restaurant hostess (or anyone in the service industry), better prepare. Go out to dinner earlier than the rush hour or plan for easy meals at home. If you’re thinking of taking all 12 members of your extended family out to dinner, call ahead of time (think days not hours) and reserve a table so the restaurant can better serve you.

By Jesse Wurm

Give yourself big cushions around your travel time, you never know what delays, weather related or not, will hang you up, and the last thing you need to be worried about is making it somewhere on time with six inches of new snow on the ground. Remember, your poor planning is not anyone else’s crisis. Financial Strains Gift giving, eating out and traveling can create an immense amount of financial strain. Make a plan with yourself or the family now, before the holidays take over, and set a budget for presents. Purchase plane tickets ahead of time to get the best rates, and have a clear plan of what you can afford to spend while you’re away. One idea is to set up a separate banking account for Christmas gifts or holiday travel. Put aside what you can paycheck to paycheck, and at the end of the year you have some play money to use. Family Lapses in time can bring lapses in memory; the family that you miss and want to spend time with can also be the family that will drive you to consume a personal bottle of wine. It’s wise to not set expectations of what you want your family to do or how you want them to act, because you will possibly end up disappointed. Expecting your holidays to be a certain way is unrealistic, instead just go with the flow. Don’t expect a family member to change in their six-

month absence or act differently, take them for who they are. A lot of love and a sense of humor will come in handy here. “Me” Time You can’t be your best self without taking care of you first. In the midst of the holiday craze remember to take time for yourself; whether that be a nice relaxing bath at the end of the day, scheduling in gym time or taking the long way home from work so you can sing in your car at the top of your lungs. Food & Entertaining Taking it upon yourself to create a huge family meal or entertain a crowd of 50 while hosting family and/or juggling kids out of school can take a toll on you. Be realistic with your time and energy. There’s no award for the best Christmas party on Facebook, so it’s best not to kill yourself trying. Prep as much as you can ahead of time, bake pies the night before so that you have time to relax and socialize too. Also keep in mind that while eggnog lattes, Christmas cookies and pumpkin martinis are tasty, take everything in moderation. One sure way of feeling crummy through the holidays is over indulging on the fun foods – eating too much sweet stuff, drinking too much and throwing all diet restrictions to the wind. As much as the cheesy bread appetizer and “vacation mode” is calling to you, is it worth the putting your lactose intolerant, gluten-free stomach through the pain? I’ll give you a hint; it’s not the answer your cravings want you to pick. Holiday Parties One would hope that at a certain age all adults would know the difference between work party etiquette and private party etiquette, but just in case let’s lay out some reminders. Being the fun person at the work party does not mean being the person to spew peppermint schnapps across the room after drunkenly karaoke-ing to “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.” Reel it in for professional moments like these and save it for the Ugly Sweater party at your best friend’s house where brief moments of stupidity can be laughed at and forgiven, instead of added to your boss’s memory bank or to a report to HR. Setting cocktail limits for work parties is essential, people.

& s e x Ta g n i t n u Acco 101 While December 31 is quickly approaching, it is still not too late to do a little bit of tax planning for the current year. Did you know that if you contribute to your IRA before April 15, 2017 you could apply that contribution to your 2016 taxes as a deduction? And if you have a Health Savings Account and have yet to reach the maximum contribution allowable, you have until April 15, 2017 to make additional contributions that will also provide you with a tax break during the current year. What are you waiting for? Consult your Certified Public Accountant today!

Legal Services It’s time to start thinking of our New Year’s resolutions. But before you start to make a list that may include the traditional soon-to-be-broken promises to yourself, why not put on your list a meeting with an attorney to discuss legal documents that will protect your family? Let’s face it, many people put off drafting a will because the thought of dying or losing a spouse is something we don’t want to think about. However, a last will and testament, a power of attorney, a healthcare power of attorney and a living will are all things that should be discussed with your legal advisor. Your family will be grateful for making this one of this year’s resolutions!

Inves tment

As 2016 comes to an end, it provides a great opportunity to review your investment portfolio and decide what changes, if any, you want to make for the upcoming year. Some of the things to consider when sitting down with your advisor include whether your strategy over the last year was in line with your long-term goals. Did you put money away in a 529 account for your children’s education? How about your retirement account? Has your income risen? If so you may want to increase your contributions to your retirement plan in the upcoming year. These are just some topics to discuss with a professional as you enter 2017.

Health Pros

e c n a r u s In s e i c n e g A

No matter what our needs, there seems to be a myriad of healthcare professionals from which to choose. But how do you know which one is right for you? The relationship you have with your provider is key. You want someone who will listen to you, communicate effectively and someone you can trust. Ask others what their experience has been with certain medical professionals, and don’t be afraid to ask questions of the medical provider as well. Some of the questions to ask other than the obvious one of whether they accept your insurance is whether the doctor is board-certified. Who is the typical patient that the doctor sees? Which hospitals work with the medical provider? Make a list of questions that are important to you, then go ahead and begin the search. And don’t forget that if you are not happy with your choice, you have every right to change providers.

It’s a necessary evil, but should we ever need it, it can be a lifesaver as well. And I’m not just referring to health insurance. There are many types of insurance that we need, from home and auto to disability and life insurance. We typically sign up for a policy, add the cost into our monthly budget, and then continue on with life. But as your life changes, so does the amount of coverage you should have. When was the last time you reviewed your homeowner’s policy? It is likely the value of your home has risen since that time so you may need to increase your policy. Schedule an appointment with your insurance agent before you find yourself faced with an unexpected loss and not enough insurance.

TRAVEL & LEISURE

RELAX REJUVENATE By Jesse Wurm

In some of the best hot springs in the Inland Northwest When the gray weather of fall and winter sets in, there’s nothing I enjoy more than getting away for the day or the weekend and soaking away muscle aches and stress in a hot spring. The healing powers of hot springs have drawn soakers for thousands of years and are widely accepted overseas as treatment options for various ailments. During a hot spring bath, the body absorbs trace amounts of minerals in the water, which can include carbon dioxide, sulfur, calcium, magnesium, chloride, iron, potassium and lithium. These minerals help to provide healing effects to different organs and systems in the body. The hot water can also boost blood circulation and increase blood oxygen flow, it reduces stress and anxiety, promotes sleep and relaxes tense muscles. Studies have also shown that your skin will absorb minerals, which can help to relieve certain skin conditions, such as dry, rough skin, eczema and psoriasis symptoms. Typically, hot springs temperatures can vary from 95°F to well over 115°F. Some places will even provide a cooling pool to bring your body’s temperature back down. The heat of the water is what helps to relieve pain, and the buoyancy created by the mineral content can create a floating feeling, relieving pressures on joints and muscles. If you suffer from chronic lower back pain or

arthritis, the hot springs are for you. It’s always good to keep in mind that since you’re immersing yourself in hot water your body will need to sweat. Drinking water before you soak and after will help keep you hydrated. I typically go to the hot springs with a large water bottle, which holds 1.5 liters of water. Drinks like coconut water with electrolytes are also a great option. Soaking can help your metabolism and increase your appetite; you’ll want to have some food on hand for a little post-soak snack. When I’m headed out, I usually take a bag with the following: a towel, bathing suit, water bottle (or two), flip flops, snacks (jerky, apples, nuts or granola) and a robe or cover up.

There are facilities to stay on site, with rooms ranging from affordable doubles, to premier luxury suites with lake views. Prices will vary from weekdays, weekends and peak season (July 1 to Sept. 30 and Dec. 20 to Jan. 2); be sure to make a reservation on their website before making the drive: www. ainsworthhotsprings.com. Hume Hotel & Spa, Nelson, B.C., Canada:

The benefits to soaking in hot springs are endless and can only be increased with habitual use. The next time you need to ward off the gloomy blues, soak away some aches and pains, or get out of town for the weekend, head to one of these nearby locations.

If you’re looking for a different experience, don’t overlook staying in nearby Nelson, about 29 miles south on BC 31. The fully restored 1898 Hume Hotel & Spa in downtown Nelson is the place to be. The full service hotel features 45 rooms, the General Store Restaurant, the Library Lounge, Mike’s Place Pub, Aura Spa and Salon and Spiritbar as well as banquet and convention services all everything under one roof. Plus, all overnight guests are treated to a complimentary hot breakfast in the morning. Reservations can be made on their website: humehotel.com.

Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort, B.C., Canada:

Symes Hot Springs Hotel and Mineral Baths, Hot Springs, Montana:

Passports are required for this destination, but trust me when I say it’s well worth the drive and brief stint with border patrol. Nestled in the Kootenay mountain range, the hot springs at Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort have been healing visitors for hundreds of years. The springs originate around the geothermal Cody Caves, (which yes, you can soak in) with water flowing down through fractures in the rock.

Nestled in the rolling hills of northwestern Montana on the Flathead Indian Reservation and just a 2.5-hour drive from Sandpoint is Symes Hot Springs Hotel which offers affordable soaks and big sky views. The recently restored hotel has a long tradition of hot water baths and comfortable lodgings; you can still enjoy a soak in a claw-footed bathtub that has been in use since 1928.

There are three pools available: the 27,000 gallon pool with temperatures from 98100; the caves with 18,000 gallons of water, temperatures ranging from 104°F to 110°F; and the 500-gallon cold plunge, fed by the nearby Munn Creek, whose temperature varies by season. The soaking pools are open every day from 10am to 9pm and bathing suits are required. Day passes are available for around $12 per adult and $9.50 per child (or $38.00 for a family, two adults/two children ages 3 to 12), but you’ll want to stay the night and enjoy the views of Kootenay Lake and the Purcell Mountain Range.

Natural mineral water flows out of an artesian well at 108°F and is piped directly to the outdoor tubs then heated as needed for indoor soaking tubs. Symes offers four individual soaking tubs in a co-ed bathhouse, an outdoor octagon pool with water temperatures of 102°F to 104°F which spills into a lower twenty foot square pool and then flows into a larger swimming pool kept cool for warmer days. Bathing suits are required for all public areas and day soaks will run you about $7 for adults, and $4.50 for kids 12 and under. The resort also offers punch cards with 10 soaks for $50. The hotel has 31 rooms; 10 with mineral water baths and shower rooms to rinse off.

Symes Hot Springs Hotel also has an antique shop, espresso bar, small conference room and full-service restaurant. They offer some great deals this time of year, keep an eye on their website for couples getaways and package deals: symeshotsprings.com. If you’re just making the day trip, there are gas stations in Plains, as well as at the corner of the turn off (Hwy 77) and Highway 28. My favorite health food market, Camas Organic Market, is located in town on the corner of Main St. and Wall St. They have wonderful organic options like fresh baked bread, buffalo jerky, local produce and other treats for the trek home. Quinn’s Hot Springs Resort, Paradise, Montana: Quinn’s Hot Springs Resort is located in the beautiful Paradise Valley of Montana, along the banks of the Clarks branch of the Flathead River. Natural mineral waters flow out of a spring at 118°F, supplying two hot tubs, four soaking pools and a swimming pool. The hot water is mixed with cool water and used to fill two modern tubs on the grassy area. The pools are drained and refilled after each use and bathing suits are required. Non-lodger pool use is restricted to four three-hour sessions from 9am to 9pm to prevent overcrowding. Soaking fees are $10 per person Monday through Thursday, and $12 per person Friday through Sunday. Quinn’s also has a punch card deal, offering 10 soaks for $70. The resort offers a variety of private cabins and lodge rooms, all non-smoking and equipped with private baths. The Harwood House restaurant is a local favorite, serving three meals a day, and their house specialty prime rib is something I’ll never forget. The onsite bar, Quinn’s Tavern, is great for a nightcap and has live music every weekend. You can view the daily menu, or make a reservation on their website: quinnshotsprings.com.

Food & Drink Recipe

HOW THE FRENCH DO ONIONS ONION SOUPS HAVE BEEN a popular staple in preparing meals from at least as far back as the Roman times. Onions are easily grown in most soils, they are cheap abundantly available and have a long shelf-life. For this reason onions were seen as “The Poor Mans food.” The modern version of the soup has evolved from a basic recipe where onions were sliced, fried and then cooked in water and typically served with bread and capers. It was only in the nineteenth century that cooks started adding flour, salt and pepper and topped the soup with cheeses such as Gruyere.

FRENCH ONION SOUP

Today french onion soup recipes are often made with caramelized onions in a meaty broth. This is often served in individual ramekins and topped with grilled Gruyere cheese.

Gather Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

The possible health benefits of consuming onions include lowering the risk of several types of cancer, improving mood and maintaining the health of skin and hair.

2 tablespoons butter 4 pounds onions, sliced 2 cloves garlic, chopped 1 teaspoon thyme, chopped 2 tablespoons butter 1/4 cup flour 3 cups beef or vegetable broth or 1.5 cups of each 1 pint sweet wine of choice…muscato or chardonnay 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 tablespoon grainy mustard 2 bay leaves Salt and pepper to taste 4 1/2 inch thick slices of day old bread, toasted 1 cup white cheddar or swiss, shredded or sliced

Melt the butter in a large sauce pan over medium heat, add the onions and cook until completely caramelized and golden brown, about 1 hour, mixing every 10-15 minutes and adding wine to deglaze the pan as needed to prevent burning.

2.

Add the garlic and thyme and cook until fragrant, about a minute.

3.

Add the butter, let it melt, mix in the flour and let it cook for 2-4 minutes.

4.

Add the wine and deglaze the pan.

5.

Add the broth, Worcestershire sauce, grainy mustard, bay leaves, salt and pepper, bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 30 minutes.

6.

Partially cook a hollowed out sweet pumpkin for 30 minutes while soup is simmering.

7.

Ladle the soup into the pumpkin on a baking sheet, top with the sliced bread and cheese and broil until cheese melts, about 1-3 minutes.

The list goes on to include the peno, northern pikeminnow, tench, suckers, sculpin and a variety of smaller minnows. But this time of year it’s the mackinaw and rainbow trout that you want to catch. Why? Because it’s time for the annual K&K Fall Fishing Derby! Starting November 19 and running through the November 27, with the exception of Thanksgiving Day, you are invited to come fish glorious Lake Pend Oreille as you search for that record-breaking fish and earn bragging rights for your fishing poweress. Brought to you by the Lake Pend Oreille Idaho Club, this annual event offers over $10,000 in cash and prizes as they split avid fishers into divisions of adults, juniors and youth giving everyone a chance to reel in the”‘big one.” The event ends at exactly 4pm on November 27 so everyone is encouraged to spend as much time on the lake as possible. Following the event, participants are invited to the awards ceremony on December 3 at the Bonner Mall at 7pm to receive their prizes and share the pictures they took during the event. The photo with the most votes wins! Interested in getting out there this year? Visit lpoic.org for entry information and don’t forget to wear some warm clothes.
