DIABETES DAY
at Bonner General Health
PUBLISHER Celebrating Veterans and Our Freedom THIS MONTH WE CELEBRATE VETERANS DAY—a day set aside to honor all those who have fought for the freedoms we enjoy as a country. Laying down your life for your country is one of the ultimate sacrifices, and although we acknowledge those sacrifices each November 11, it is something we should make a conscious effort to do all throughout the year.
Monday, Nov. 6th
10am-1pm In the BGH Health Services Building at
The younger generation only hears stories of what it meant to be drafted into the military; young men anxiously waiting to see if their number came up. Would they be going off to college or to war? It was an uncertain time. We at Living Local are so grateful for the freedom we have and for those who have fought for the rights we now have. Our freedom is something we should never take for granted. As journalists and a company that is independently owned, we are grateful for the opportunity to be able to write and report without censorship. And while it is simply a coincidence that Veterans Day falls close to Thanksgiving, it also offers time to reflect on all the blessings we have—many of which would not be possible without the sacrifices of our veterans.
423 N. Third Avenue, Suite 103
As you go through the month of November, take time to express thanks to those who have served in the military to protect and defend our great country. Do you know someone who has lost a loved one in the war? Reach out to them and extend a heartfelt thank you.
FREE TO THE PUBLIC!
To all those who have served or are currently serving, we at Living Local say, “Thank you, and God bless you.”

Practical Living
ESSENTIALS By Annie Nye, Interior Designer, Selkirk Glass & Cabinets, a division of Ponderay Design Center
DON’T STRESS
LET GO AND ENJOY THE COMPANY
IN LIGHT OF ALL the devastating news that’s been happening around us, I can honestly say that for me, the most important part of my home’s interiors now is to have those whom I love in it. I need them to be around me and to hear the sound of their laughter, sometimes even the fighting, and most of all, the feeling of safety knowing they are close is something I would give anything to keep forever. But, if you are like me, when people are scheduled to come over, you immediately begin the frantic preparation. The stress sets in, and it’s hard to get everything ready. By the time people are there, you don’t really enjoy their presence because you are too busy cooking, serving and then cleaning up. Hold up. Shouldn’t you be able to sit down and enjoy the moment? Absolutely. So you need to let go of the illusion of perfection and instead create the environment of relaxation and fun. To put things into perspective, those same people who are coming over also live in
SandpointLivingLocal.com
21
houses that have clutter, crumbs on their countertops, and I bet they even have dirt on their floors. Let go of making sure your house is spotless and the throw pillows are perfectly placed. Let go of creating that table setting that doesn’t allow you space to actually put food on the table. Let go of the dirty dishes piled in the sink after the meal is done. Stand still and visit for a while, sit down next to someone and ask them how things are going; allow yourself some flexibility to actually engage with the people who are there. I promise you won’t regret it. So, how do you create this “relaxed” environment? First, have a basket at the front door for people to put their cell phones in when they walk in the door. They can’t take the phone further than that threshold. By eliminating this one distraction, you are promoting eye contact and engaging conversations, and it will be surprisingly fun! Plus, you’re setting a good example for the young kids to play games and engage personally with others, too. Another way to relax is to have your guests bring something with them so you aren’t having to prepare everything. Plus, people like to contribute and share their favorite recipes.

LET IT GO!
Leave dishes out and ask someone else to set the table. Have chores available to do so everyone is engaged. Don’t bark orders at people but allow them to help you where they can. It lets them jump into the mix of what’s going on rather than standing on the sideline trying not to get in the way. It also keeps them close by and allows time for conversation. If they wanted someone to just serve them, they could have gone to a restaurant! So, to make our homes more inviting and comfortable, we need to be uncomfortable for a bit by allowing them to see our house as it’s ‘lived in,’ asking for help with meals and chores, and making ourselves get more personal with our guests. They will feel more welcome and inclined to come back, you’ll be more approachable and fun, and you are more likely to have people over more often because it’s not such a stressful event.

Here are some ideas to consider: • Review your statements. Closely review the monthly statements from your checking and other financial accounts. If you find any unfamiliar charges, contact your bank or other financial services provider immediately. • Order your credit reports. The three credit reporting agencies—TransUnion, Equifax and Experian—are each required by law to provide you one free credit report a year. Make sure your name, address and other information are correct on your credit report, and if you find old or inaccurate information, have it removed.

• Place a fraud alert. If you suspect you have become a victim of Identity theft, place a “fraud alert” on your credit reports by contacting any of the three credit reporting agencies. You can choose a short-term or long-term alert. And if you’re an active member of the military, you can request a special, one-year alert. • Feed your shredder. Shred all old bank and investment statements, applications for new credit cards and any other documents that contain personal information. • Destroy digital data. If you have a variety of financial accounts, you’re not just creating a paper trail—you’re also establishing a digital “footprint.” So, when you sell or otherwise dispose of a computer system or hard drive, you may want to take steps to destroy personal data. You might think that simply deleting it would be sufficient, but tech-savvy identity thieves
SandpointLivingLocal.com
24
can “undelete” files or recover information from a formatted drive. However, products are available that allow you to completely wipe out data on hard drives. • Change passwords. It’s a good idea to change your Internet passwords every so often—especially those passwords that provide access to financial accounts. • Leave your Social Security card home. Snagging someone’s Social Security number is a real “catch” for identity thieves, so do everything you can to thwart them. And you can start by leaving your Social Security card safely at home—after all, there’s probably never a good reason to bring it out, anyway. In fact, be wary of anyone, or any business, that asks for your Social Security number, either in person or online. Except for a few obvious exceptions, such as your tax preparer, most reputable businesses don’t need to know anything about your Social Security information. • Watch for “phishers.” If you’ve ever gotten an email, supposedly from your bank, advising you that your account will be “frozen” unless you provide personal details about your account, it’s a good bet that someone is “phishing” for this information—and they’re using the “freezing” threat as bait. What’s particularly alarming is that these “phishers” have gotten quite good at duplicating logos and using official-sounding language. CHANGING THE WORLD OF MATH
TEACHERS WITH A BIG HEART
NEW PROGRAM SEES POSITIVE RESULTS AND A LOVE OF NUMBERS BY PATTY HUTCHENS THIS MONTH WE CELEBRATE a team of teachers who are making a difference in the way our students learn math. Farmin-Stidwell’s Math Cohort Team includes teachers Hollie Hurst (second grade), Becky Charvoz (third grade), and sixth-grade teachers Patsy Olin and Jody Russell. Kathy Prummer, Lake Pend Oreille School District’s math coach, leads the team. The district recently implemented a program called Collaborative Math Classrooms. Teachers throughout the district are being instructed in math strategies that assist the students to develop a deeper understanding of math concepts. With ongoing professional development, teachers are working to meet the needs of math students at every grade level. According to Farmin-Stidwell Principal Erik Olson, his school has expanded the program this year to include second through sixth grades. Hollie Hurst, who previously taught kindergarten and is now a second-grade teacher, said she learned to implement Number Talks into her math routine, and it has been very beneficial to the students. “A Number Talk is a five- to 15-minute classroom conversation around purposely crafted problems that are solved mentally,” said Hurst. “During this time, students are given opportunities to share their thinking with the group. This ended up being my favorite part of the day! The students are always engaged, and I love witnessing their growth in the understanding of number concepts.” One component of the program is that students no longer rely on only rules to solve math problems; instead, they need to understand the concepts behind it in order to implement the correct strategies. The instructors state that students are learning to clearly explain how they solved a problem and even find the errors in another person’s math

thinking. This collaborative model is fostering both mathematicians of the next generation as well as a true love of math. The shift they have witnessed is that kids are starting to view math as much more than a school subject; they are also seeing math in their day-to-day lives. A second component is the importance of Growth Mindset. As the team of teachers explains, if learning is positively fostered, a student’s brain will continue to grow, especially when they make mistakes. The Growth Mindset is the belief that abilities can be developed through commitment and hard work. Making mistakes allows our brains to make new connections. This struggle is necessary for brain growth (new neuron connectivity). Approaching math in this way will help students achieve at higher levels and deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts. This team of teachers at Farmin-Stidwell are pleased with the results they have seen. When students were asked how they feel about math, some of the responses include the following: “I love math because math has games. It is like exploring a world of wonder and fun and friendship.” “I do not care if I show my answer to the class and it is wrong. I know the other students will help me find my error, and we will all learn from my mistake.” “I now believe that I AM a math person!” Principal Olson could not be more pleased. “This team is really changing the way math is taught and thought about,” he said. “The growth the students have made has been incredible.”

SEASONAL PET PARENT DISORDER RESIST THE TEMPTATION TO SHARE HOLIDAY EXTRAS WITH YOUR PETS BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL
DON’T GIVE IN TO THEIR CUTENESS
AS THE SEASON BEGINS TO sparkle with yummy food, family reunions, and holiday activity, perhaps you can take this time to think about how your furry or feathered companions are faring. Seize this well deserved reprieve from “the grind” to think about quality pet care. What will the next few months look like for your pet? Will there be a place for him at the dinner table? The playing field? Holiday feeding rituals and play time/ rhythm seem like timely topics to discuss before your family comes to town.
can avoid serious gastric issues by keeping the bowl full of regular fare. If you need to “celebrate” top it off with a healthy choice. How about a carrot stick, popcorn puff, salmon or lean meat? If you know your pet is food sensitive, keep some prescription dietary treats on hand for the occasion. Hold the fat and bone: it’s a great way to avoid an unnecessary, emergency veterinary visit.
The temptation at the dinner table is to share a little of the trimmings or gravy, your four legged friend should feel the holiday love too, right? How easily we forget that they don’t have a calendar and are unaware of what day it is. They only know when it’s time to eat! Your pets don’t have any physical control over what you feed them, you do! You, pet parent,

You, pet parent, can avoid serious gastric issues by keeping the bowl full of regular fare.
My most passionate pet concern is the amount of exercise, stimulation, and “pet time” that domestic companion animals receive on a daily basis. You know why? Because, like a human, dog, cat and bird diseases along with behavioral problems often stem from lack of the above. It’s heartbreaking. Use the holidays to spend more time running, throwing, playing, talking, petting and loving your “other” family member. Maybe you brainstorm with the kids new ways to be more available to your pet during the busier months. Can you share the duty with other pet owners? All pets need exercise, stimulation, and consistency – they’ll thank you for it with...I repeat...less visits to the veterinarian. Spending intentional time with your pet every day is such a good habit for both them and you. It’s only easy to say and do if you prioritize. May all of earth’s creatures enjoy the holiday season!

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS Traditional Turkey Trot offers opportunity to give back to the community. By Patty Hutchens
THE TURKEY TROT has become a festive Thanksgiving tradition for many in Sandpoint, and this year will be no different. “Unlike most events where there is more administration, timing of racers and event hoopla, the Turkey Trot thrives on simplicity,” said Don Helander, owner of Sandpoint West Athletic Club (SWAC) who puts on the Thanksgiving Day event. SWAC and the City of Sandpoint partner to make this event a fun time for all. Hosted by SWAC at Travers Park, the City’s role is to ensure a cleared and safe route for all to enjoy. Not only is it a great way to start out the festive day, but it benefits the community as well. “The cost to participate is any donation to the [Bonner Community] Food Bank. SWAC collects the items at the event and delivers to the Food Bank,” said Helander. “We’ve collected around 900 pounds of food the past few years. Maybe this 10th anniversary we’ll top 1,000 pounds.” Bonner Community Food Bank Executive Director Debbie Love appreciates the donations and said the need is great. “In November of last year we served 3,967 individuals, and in December we served 3,401 individuals,” said Love. “For Thanksgiving distribution, we served 825

families in Bonner County last year with a turkey and sides. We always shoot for a goal of providing enough food for 900 families for Bonner County to ensure we have enough for families that need a Thanksgiving meal.” Helander said they have been surprised and pleased with the growth of the Turkey Trot over the last decade. “It has gone from about 50 participants to over 300,” he said. “Really it’s about getting out on Thanksgiving morning with your neighbors and enjoying a good walk, trot, jog or run, and strollers are welcome. There’s no requirement to go any distance, and what seems to be most appealing is an opportunity to donate as well as sharing thankfulness with community. Some folks show up in some form of costume, and for that effort we reward a pie courtesy of the Pie Hut.” All ages and fitness levels are welcome. Please note that per City of Sandpoint policy, dogs are not allowed at Travers Park. The event begins at 9am Thanksgiving morning. Arrive a few minutes early to sign a release and drop off a donation. See you there!

WE ALL HAVE DREAMS on what we aspire to become, but for many, twists and turns in life can sometimes squash or alter those ideas. It can be easy to give up on those dreams and settle into a familiar routine, but for others, that path just isn’t good enough. One local woman is proving that with dedication to your dreams, hard work and balance in your life, you can achieve exactly what you set out to become. Hannah Wright is a 2014 graduate of Sandpoint High School and leads one of the more interesting lives you’ll find in a young woman from North Idaho. “I began modeling when I was 16 when I found a local photographer in town, Tonya Oleman,” said Hannah. “She did my first set of pictures to start my portfolio, and it took off from there. I’ve been doing it on and off now since then with photographers from Coeur d’Alene, Spokane, Boise, Seattle, Los Angeles and Sandpoint.” Hannah has
graced many publications and was recently on the June issue cover of fashion magazine WTF (What The Fashion!). “I was asked to do a photo shoot for Eric Barro; he is the publisher and photographer for WTF magazine. We both loved each other’s work and wanted to create some amazing images together,” said Hannah. For many, becoming a model and being published would be dream come true enough, but not for Hannah, as another career has always been in the back of her mind, even before she started posing. “My mom was an EMT/firefighter, along with most of my family. Hearing my mom tell stories about her experiences was always the coolest thing and so inspiring. I’ve always been interested in the medical field, and since I was little wanted to be a firefighter.” Today you’ll find Hannah working for Bonner County EMS as she awaits her application to go through for paramedic

school. She is also volunteering her time and gaining more experience with the Northside Fire Department. “Volunteering at Northside Fire has been a wonderful experience as well. Being the only female at a fire department could seem intimidating for most, but I’m treated like everyone else and treated with so much respect.” At just 21 years old, Hannah continues to learn from each experience out on the job. “Every call that I go on is different, even if the origin is the same. Every patient is different, and I do learn something new every time I go out,” she said. For many 20-somethings, balancing two careers, preparing for upcoming school and trying to still have an active social life would be tough to juggle, but for Hannah, she’s just as busy at home as she is on the job. “My son is almost a year and a half. He is the highlight of every day and completely changed my life for

ER AND ALEX K C Y NI TO B PHO
“My biggest difficulty balancing life and work is the feeling to need to work and stay busy but wanting to stay home with my son every day.” the better when I had him. He’s the sweetest boy and sometimes too smart for my own good.” Anyone who has or has raised a toddler knows full well the amount of energy and attention they require, but true to her always determined personality, Hannah is devoted to giving her young son as much love as she can. “It’s been the best experience being a mother. Even being a young mother is so awesome. I still have enough energy to chase him around and keep up with him. He is by far my favorite person!” Like any working parent, there are always daily challenges to overcome and by no means does that escape Hannah. She has a family who loves and supports her child, which allows her to continue making life better for herself and her son. “My biggest difficulty balancing life and work is the feeling to need to work and stay busy but wanting to stay home with my son every day. It doesn’t matter if I’m gone for a 48hour shift or just 15 minutes for a store run, I miss him every time I leave.”
At every turn, Hannah is knocking down traditional stereotypes; models are selfinterested, becoming a paramedic and firefighter is a man’s game, and young mothers can’t work and raise a child at the same time. Older generations often look at millennials as lazy and entitled, but Hannah is proof that stereotype isn’t always true either. For anyone, Hannah’s life would seem one of great difficulty to balance, but she says any young woman can do it if they find their own strength. “Some advice I would give other young women is to just strive for your goals. Even if they seem unreasonable or out of reach at this moment, if you keep working hard you’ll be able to achieve them. I’ve also made it a point in my life to always listen to people’s advice for me but not always taking it. Don’t ever let people tell you what you can’t do and what you can’t achieve.”

BRINGING TECH TO MIDDLE AMERICA The Innovation Collective aims to educate individuals on how they can succeed in today’s technological economy
“The lower and middle classes don’t have as many opportunities to compete in the technological economy, which is eating every other economy; it’s everywhere,” he said. “How do we, in Middle America, participate in that?”
THERE’S NO ESCAPING TECHNOLOGY—it’s infiltrated our daily lives and how we work. And, to a degree, while there is a growing uncertainty and speculation about the future of jobs as technology grows more advanced, people and the community need to continue to educate themselves and how they fit into a changing workforce. To help, the Innovation Collective is there. Nick Smoot, founder of the Innovation Collective, recognized that technology jobs were the most lucrative and also largely consolidated on either U.S. coast.

Smoot, a native of Northern Idaho, is an entrepreneur who has long been fascinated by mobile phones and the business opportunities that they present. He has started three tech companies but now is devoted fully to mentoring and expanding the Innovation Collective and managing Mountain Man Ventures, a venture capitalist firm. Between the two, he spends much of his time lending his expertise to advise startups and through coaching, mentoring and investing with individuals. Smoot’s goal is to help people attain the skills to remain relevant as the workforce transitions to a more technical arena.

The changing workforce and human flourishing Smoot foresees that in the next 20 years, 42 percent of today’s jobs will be lost to technology. On the flip side, many more jobs will be created as a result of it. The state of transition that our economy is in is full of opportunities for those who are qualified, and Smoot aims to cultivate talent in the North Idaho area to attract new businesses and to hire locally. The Innovation Collective also serves as a middleman to introduce companies to existing skilled workers. “Lots of companies need talent, and we introduce them to that,” Smoot said. Smoot does that through a variety of events hosted by the Innovation Collective—36 events and programs to be exact. He had the idea for the organization back in 2013 and launched it in 2014 as a way to propel individuals to find purpose and meaning as their best selves. “A misconception of the Innovation Collective is that we’re a networking platform,” he said.
SandpointLivingLocal.com
The group hosts events, such as Coffee and Concepts, on the first and third Wednesday mornings of each month to meet and talk about entrepreneurial happenings and inquiries. Fireside Chats, held on the second Wednesday of the month, showcase guest speakers to discuss their area of expertise. While these events are ideal for networking, Smoot’s goal is to expose people’s potential, which he calls “human flourishing.” “[This is] more of a strategy. Most people are bad at certain areas of life. [This] helps people learn how to improve and achieve [what’s lacking] and get on the right path. We want to help people to achieve a life where they have purpose,” he said. That’s where the events come into play more. Individuals are introduced to new ideas by attending Coffee and Concepts and the Fireside Chats. For a more structured setting to reach specific goals, they have created a series of classes focusing on Human Flourishing through their Innovation Collective Leadership Network (ICLN). They conduct the classes three months at a time, launching each small class after a weekend summit.

“We cover the great eight, [which are] the core competencies of human flourishing. We look at how you manage relationships, finances and selftalk, [and] we quickly realize how rude we are to ourselves,” he said. Smoot anticipates that the classes will grow exponentially and reach the thousands over the next five years, eventually inducing a ripple effect on the community. “If that many people want to improve themselves—that’s the kind of city I’d like to live in,” he said. Expanding and rebranding Smoot and his staff have been expanding the Collective’s initiatives outside of Coeur d’Alene to Sandpoint; Lethbridge, Alberta; Butte, Montana; and California. The group is at various stages of involvement in assisting them to hone in on a particular aspect of the tech industry. For instance, Coeur d’Alene has focused much on robotics and artificial intelligence (AI), and Lethbridge is more involved with food tech. The overriding goal for the Collective is to assist in “rebranding” the economies of these smaller
cities to make themselves viable areas for tech companies to tap into. “It’s less about rebranding—that’s a necessary evil for economic viability. Cities need to have an identity, and rebranding is a part of that,” Smoot said. Rebranding is simply the beginning of a community’s quest to improve the quality of life. From there, the next step is to boost the skill level of its residents. “I want people to be intentional about the lives they live. It makes them more valuable. Rebranding is just one thing you can do to make a better world,” he said. Making technology accessible Smoot not only wants to assist people about achieving their best selves, he wants to make stateof-the-art technology accessible to them as well. A few months ago, Smoot visited a laboratory at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland where he met Johnny Matheny, an amputee who is one of the first patients in the world to use a mindcontrolled robotic prosthetic arm. Matheny is

participating in a study at Johns Hopkins, which is going well, but cannot use the prosthetic in his daily life. When Smoot learned that after testing, Matheny and other patients went home without the ground-breaking prosthetic, he wanted to help Matheny gain access to the prosthetic outside of the lab. To do that, Smoot recently launched an Indie Go Go campaign to raise awareness as well as funds. The campaign is set in stages that earn Matheny certain levels of access according to the amount raised. The ultimate goal is to raise enough money to manufacture the prosthetics for more individuals. “We’re interested more in the story—that’s what’s most important because it’s not being told,” Smoot said. For more information about the Collective, visit them at the InnovationCollective.com or at one of their events at the Innovation Den located at 418 E. Lakeside Drive in Coeur d’Alene. You can find information about their Indie Go Go campaign at IndieGoGo.com and searching “Operation: Get People Robot Arms.”

SANDPOINT HIGH SCHOOL junior Riley Walkington is passionate about the sport she has played almost her entire life—soccer. Riley was named Inland Empire League’s Most Valuable Player, the Regional IV Team alternate, North Idaho Soccer Player of the Year and the captain of Sandpoint High School soccer and Eastern Washington ODP (Olympic Development Program) team. But it is not just on the soccer field where she displays commitment and excellence; Riley has been on the honor roll and maintained a 4.0 GPA all throughout high school. She has always received the President’s Award and the Outstanding Individual Scholastic Award. While there have been many accolades throughout the years, Riley said the best is yet to come. “My biggest accomplishment in soccer came when I committed to play Division I soccer at Eastern Washington University,” said Riley.

While she experienced a torn MCL this season, she has focused on being positive so she can get back out on the field as soon as possible. “I enjoy soccer because it gives me an outlet to forget about everything else going on in my life,” said Riley. “Once I step foot on the field, all my troubles go away, and it’s just me, the ball and my team.” Riley shared that her career interests include criminology, teaching and social work, “mainly because I enjoy helping others,” she said. Whatever comes her way, Riley said being involved in sports has taught her an important lesson that she will carry with her always: “The biggest life lesson I have learned from participating in sports has been that you will have highs and lows, not only on the field but in life as well.”

JARRETT MITTON SANDPOINT HIGH SCHOOL senior Jarrett Mitton is a passionate athlete who said he enjoys weightlifting above all else. He currently plays on the Sandpoint High School varsity football team as well as the track team and maintains a 3.8 GPA. “My favorite part about playing football has been the bus rides with my teammates and the memories we have created together on and off the field,” said Jarrett. He has had some challenges along the way including multiple shoulder injuries, which has meant sacrificing time in the weight room and on the field. But after a month of physical therapy, he said his shoulders were stable enough to begin weight training again.

said Jarrett, “only furthering my athletic career as an avid weightlifter. He shares that he is passionate about the field of sports medicine and helping others grow stronger, both mentally and physically. “After earning a major in exercise science, I plan to apply for the doctor of physical therapy program at ISU,” said Jarrett. As he moves forward on his journey, Jarrett will take a lesson he learned in football and apply it to his everyday life: “Just like life, football will knock you down and try to keep you there, but it’s not about getting knocked down, it’s about getting back up,” said Jarrett.
Jarrett plans to attend Idaho State University where he will study exercise science. “I don’t plan on playing any collegiate level sports,”

A PERFECT MATCH Program helps match volunteers with nonprofits By Patty Hutchens “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.” - William Shakespeare WITH DAILY LIVES FILLED balancing work and family, it is inspiring to know that people in Idaho can still find time to give to others. In fact, in 2014, Idaho was ranked No. 2 in the country in volunteerism, with 35.8 percent of its residents logging 51 million hours of service in one year. One of the keys to finding an effective and enthusiastic volunteer is to match someone with opportunities that best utilize his or her talents. And if you are involved in any of the several hundred nonprofit groups in Boundary and Bonner counties, you know finding volunteers is never an easy task. Fortunately, Volunteer Idaho Panhandle Coordinator Elise Boyce has successfully matched volunteers with the needs of numerous nonprofit groups over the last several months.

“Sandpoint Community Resource Center works to bridge the gap with needs of the community with service providers,” said Boyce. “One way to further meet the needs is to fill the gap and connect volunteers with the needs [of the nonprofits].” The mission behind Volunteer Idaho Panhandle is to have one central place where volunteers can go to get connected with volunteer opportunities. The Volunteer Idaho Panhandle project features training and registering organizations and volunteers on VolunteerUnited.org, a website that utilizes a matching tool for volunteers and nonprofits. The project also has a marketing campaign to help promote volunteerism is both Boundary and Bonner counties, provides monthly Volunteer Idaho Panhandle orientations, volunteer management training, tracking and reporting on local volunteer activities, and they also host an annual volunteer fair in both Bonner and Boundary counties. But that is just one way to connect volunteers with organizations. “We can also meet face-to-face with people who would like to volunteer, and we hold monthly ‘mini fairs’ to help volunteers find their perfect match,” said Boyce, who adds that she also works closely with realtors who can assist some of their clients who are moving to the area get plugged into opportunities where they can connect with others. The impact of engaged volunteers in the community cannot be understated. When working with various nonprofits, Boyce said she emphasizes that it is important to find a variety of people to volunteer in each organization so everyone can utilize his or her own talents. “Also, each organization should have a volunteer coordinator,” said Boyce of maximizing the benefits of having people give of their time and talent. “A lot of organizations experience volunteer burnout, therefore, make sure the volunteer is a good fit and clarify their role.” The online matching tool in the two northern counties has already had 2,000 views in the six months it has been up and running, and Boyce hopes that is just the beginning. She has filled her days with attending events, meeting one-on-one with organizations and enthusiastically welcomes any opportunity she has to help spread the word. According to Boyce, Sandpoint Community Resource Center has found there are three major gaps when it comes to meeting the needs of the community. Those gaps are transportation, housing and financial challenges. “The needs are great, and finding the volunteers can be challenging,” she said. Boyce shares that her role is fulfilling and she appreciates the support she has received from the community. She took on this task of working on Volunteer Idaho Panhandle for a period of one year as a member of AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service To America), a program that originated with an idea from President John F. Kennedy and was officially formed in 1965. With a minimal salary, AmeriCorps VISTA members serve for one year and help to build capacity in nonprofit organizations and public agencies to help them more effectively generate the commitment of private sector resources, encourage volunteer service at the local level and empower individuals and communities.
The mission behind Volunteer Idaho Panhandle is to have one central place where volunteers can go to get connected with volunteer opportunities.

There is an advisory board that is made up of people from the community including representatives from various nonprofits as well as a representative from the Department of Health and Welfare. Erin Binnall is the community engagement specialist and foundation coordinator for Bonner General Health and is a member of Volunteer Idaho Panhandle’s advisory board. “Volunteering can provide both physical and mental rewards to individuals. It allows new and old community members an opportunity to get to know the valuable resources we have here in Sandpoint,” said Binnall. “Volunteer Idaho Panhandle is a great way for volunteers to be matched with volunteer opportunities. Many times, some of us want to volunteer, but we are just not sure where to begin or do not want to be sucked into long-term commitments. VolunteerUnited. org can give individuals, families, groups of friends interested in giving back, dates and community events that may meet their needs and wants in both short-term and long-term. I believe volunteering is a healthy and fun way to strengthen our community.”
She said her role as an advisory board member has been to support the efforts of the project through community awareness and volunteering. “We met weekly in the beginning supporting Elise and Becca [Orchard with Sandpoint Community Resource Center] with brainstorming, branding, marketing and more.” VolunteerUnited is not just touching people in North Idaho. There are people working throughout the entire state, and the results have been amazing. To date statewide, 686 nonprofit groups have registered on VolunteerUnited, and there have been 87,450 agency views since the day they launched. During the first six months of this year, there were 29,611 volunteer opportunities viewed online. In Bonner County, there have been several agencies who are already utilizing Volunteer Idaho Panhandle, among those registered are Bonner General Health, Bonner Partners in Care Clinic, Community Cancer Services, Creations, East Bonner County Free Library, Jacey’s Race, Mountain States Early Head Start,

Health & Lifestyle QUALITY OVER QUANTITY
Does Your Fitness Make You Fit? By Susan Moore, Owner, Better Gym & Better Eats, Gig Harbor
IT’S NOVEMBER, AND THE YEAR IS coming to an end. Within two months we celebrate—and indulge—with Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. This is when Americans gain the most weight, which they plan on taking off once the new year hits. Every year millions of people make getting in shape their New Year’s resolution. It’s the “I’ll start Monday” mentality that we battle the rest of the year but on a much larger scale. But what exactly does getting in shape mean to us? What is our motivation? What are our goals exactly? Asking the “why” is probably the most important question to think through in order to optimize success. Learning the “how” to facilitate the “why” and subsequently devising a
productive plan could turn this year’s resolution into next year’s reason to be thankful. It’s actually easier than you could have ever imagined. First you need to write down your goals and how you think you can accomplish them. Spend some time researching people who have done what you plan to do and how they did it. What were their struggles? One of the most crucial things to consider is safety. You need to make sure that the exercises you decide on are not inherently dangerous. Are you going to be using a video, going to a class, hiring a trainer or even buying a piece of equipment? Do your due diligence. I don’t typically

Look for training that makes you feel better versus worse.
recommend any videos that have strength training exercises in them like push-ups, pull-ups, lunges or squats. If you haven’t been exercising regularly, chances are your body needs a refresher on the proper mobility, flexibility, strength and reflexes to do these movements under qualified guidance. If professional guidance is absolutely off the table, video yourself doing the movements and watch the videos. If anything about the movements doesn’t look right, it isn’t. We were all born with the ability to know what right/wrong looks and feels like, but unfortunately we all have to sit for long periods of time in our society, so we tend to lose the ability to know what right/wrong feels like. Thankfully we never lose the ability to know what right/wrong looks like. If when you watch the video and it doesn’t look like the movement you were trying to do, do some more research and continue to work on these movements like you would if learning any new skill. This is the skill of strength. Keep videoing and keep refining. You should eventually learn how to do the movements correctly and in the process get stronger, healthier and burn some calories. If you feel like you would have more success in a group setting (my personal favorite) or want to join a class, make sure the instructor is a subject matter expert in what they are teaching. If you don’t feel comfortable
asking for their qualifications, Google is a beautiful thing, and you can usually get all the information about your instructor you are looking for. I’m pretty good with instructing TRX, and if you go to their website you’ll find that I can back that up with the amount of education I have in it. Most instructors don’t know what they don’t know, and just because they look fit doesn’t mean they know how to instruct, correct, modify or when to refer people to a medical professional. I teach a lot of professional education around the country to health and fitness practitioners, and approximately 80 percent don’t know how to properly teach or even do a squat themselves. The main reasons people don’t stay motivated is they lack direction or get injured. If you are in a class, make sure quality of movement is more important than quantity. The only thing a lot of bad movements will get you is an eventual injury. You should feel like you are ready to take over the world most days after training, not like you need a nap. Look for training that makes you feel better versus worse. There seems to be a surge of fitness masochism where a training session isn’t good unless you get annihilated. Remember, adaptation is what a training protocol should provide, not just fatigue. Anyone can make you tired, but can they make you stronger? If you are bargain shopping for fitness instruction, you will get what you pay for. The more education your trainer/instructor invests in, the more they are investing in your success. Set a goal, ask questions, get moving and enjoy every second of it!!

LIFESTYLE CHANGES
A NEW REALITY HELPING YOUR FAMILY TO SUPPORT YOUR LIFESTYLE CHANGES
Your Goals Are Our Priority!
BY KENNY MARKWARDT, OWNER, CROSSFIT SANDPOINT
SO YOU’VE DECIDED to make some changes in your nutrition and lifestyle. Awesome! That first step can be the most difficult, so congratulations on starting down a new path. But wait, you’re married and have a handful of freeloading roommates who have a daily rotating list of demands that requires a lot of your energy and time to execute. If these demands aren’t met, you face the very real threat of having the time that should be sacred in your own home shattered by screams, cries and tantrums by your spouse and/or children.
Sandpoint’s Only Full Size Warm Water Therapy Pool
In other words, you’ve come to terms with and accepted that change will be a new reality of the life that you desire, but your family hasn’t. What to do? One answer is to just say, “Guess what, I’m making your meals, so tough luck. You go to the store, plan and prepare your own meals, and you better do all your own dishes if you want something different. Oh yeah, and if you leave any of the unhealthy food you know I will not be eating and don’t want to be tempted by in the house, I’m throwing it in the trash the minute I find it.” That’s certainly an idea, but let’s leave that one on the back burner for a while and see if we can’t achieve some diplomacy without starting an all-out intra-household war. Try and find a good, positive way for them to look at the new changes, whether it’s health, longevity or even just plain old bribery. Find a way that you might be able to present it to them that will resonate with them.
Flipping everything upside down and inside out is tumultuous for everyone, even you. Take one thing at a time and refine it to something that you think can be embraced. Whether that is one meal, one form of snack, reducing the amount of dessert, changing soda over to something else, adding new vegetables to meals or what have you. Then once that’s been accepted as a part of life and no one is squabbling about it anymore, find something else and slowly refine that. Try and remember that what you’re trying to achieve is a new lifestyle, and that with this new lifestyle, you’ll be adding many more years to your life, so there’s no hurry to try and do it all at once. You’ve got tons of time to get it perfect.
Then, take it slow and introduce new changes to your lifestyle in steps, not all at once.

DIABETES AWARENESS TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR HEALTH
BY BONNER GENERAL HEALTH
E DEUACLATT H E Y Y OTUIRPS E L F H
DIABETES IS A DISEASE in which the body’s ability to produce or respond to the hormone insulin is impaired, resulting in elevated levels of glucose (sugar) in the blood. There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that usually occurs in childhood but can occur at any time. The symptoms of excessive thirst and urination come on pretty quickly. People with Type 1 have a genetic predisposition for Type 1 diabetes or contracted a virus or illness that triggered their immune system to attack the specific cells in their pancreas that make insulin. People with Type 1, in a short period of time, no longer make any insulin and always need insulin by injection or pump. Type 2 diabetes usually occurs in adulthood and features insulin resistance. The typical person with Type 2 has been making lots of insulin for a while, trying to move sugar into the resistant cells. By the time they are diagnosed with diabetes, they have lost half of their ability
to make insulin. Prior to Type 2 diabetes, many people are diagnosed with prediabetes. With this diagnosis, lifestyle changes can be made so that diabetes doesn’t develop. Type 2 is often initially treated with diet, exercise and oral medications or incretin hormones. Later, many people with Type 2 diabetes also need insulin.
monitors glucose levels, which are sent to an insulin pump. The technology then directs the pump to automatically adjust insulin up or down between meals based on blood-sugar levels. This helps keep glucose levels in range and protects the patient from experiencing blood glucose lows and highs.
Every year, 1.5 million Americans are newly diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes was the seventh leading cause of death in the United States in 2015, with 79,535 death certificates listing it as the underlying cause of death, and a total of 252,806 death certificates listing diabetes as an underlying or contributing cause of death.
If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, you may feel overwhelmed and fearful. The good news is, with diabetes education, you can learn about diet, exercise, medication and monitoring to help you manage your diabetes and reduce the risk of long-term complications.
There are exciting new developments in medications and equipment to test and treat diabetes. Continuous glucose monitors are available and Medicare will approve the Dexcom G5 continuous glucose monitor for patients on Medicare using insulin. The Medtronic 670G system includes a sensor that

How you can make a positive impact on the world By Patty Hutchens

We can find ourselves feeling helpless and wondering what we can do to help those who may be thousands of miles away from us. Our minds automatically go to monetary help, but one does not have to have an excess of disposable income to make a difference. And the beauty of it is that it not only benefits those who we set out to help but also blesses those who contribute.
W
e turn on the news each night to stories of tragedy. Hurricanes wiping out people’s homes and life-long memories. People fleeing from forest fires that threaten their safety. Mass shootings taking away innocent lives. In a world with news at our fingertips 24 hours a day, the constant influx of violence and tragedy can be devastating to our spirit. If we are not careful, we can become so overcome that it can lead to sadness and anxiety.
While we often talk about the importance of giving and being thankful for our blessings around the holidays, it is a lesson we can all put into action year round. And what better time to start than this holiday season? Be selective on what your child sees on the news, as you do not want to instill fear in them. Share the positive stories of heroism; people taking boats and trucks door to door to help evacuate some of the hurricane victims; total strangers helping families go through the rubble after a wildfire or flooding has taken their home. Then share with your child or children how they, too, can be an everyday hero.
In a story in the Washington Post a little over two years ago, Political Scientist Shana Gadarian noted, “Media competition means that journalists and editors have incentives to use emotionally powerful visuals and story lines to gain and maintain ever-shrinking news audiences.”
Kids identify most closely with money. They stock their piggy banks only to empty them out and count how much money it will take to buy their new favorite toy. When donating money, remember to give to reputable organizations and remember, every little bit helps.
But what effect can all of this have on our own mental health? According to British psychologist Dr. Graham Davey, exposure to violence through the media can either intensify or trigger stress, anxiety, depression and, in some cases, post-traumatic stress disorder.
Children and families do not always have to give their own money; they can hold fundraisers that will bring the community together to help collect donations of money and items. Fundraisers can be a big undertaking, so maybe partner with a school or church and make it a community event!
Approach the fundraiser thoughtfully, keeping in mind what the goal is. Is it an opportunity to collect toys for those children who lost theirs due to a natural disaster? Are you collecting money for a food bank to help with those who need it? Do those whom you seek to help need clothing?
Getting involved and giving back
If you want to keep your fundraiser on a smaller scale and witness firsthand the impact your donations are making, consider adopting a family. You may even find you’ll make some new friends along the way.
While much of the tragedy that has recently taken place is distant from our own backyard, it is a perfect opportunity to teach our children the importance of giving back to others.

As adults, there are many ways we can help depending upon time and talent. During the recent Las Vegas shooting, the greatest need was the donation of blood. While one can pray that a tragedy like this never happens again, much less in our own communities, we can do our part to help in even the smallest of circumstances. Donating blood does not cost anything and can ultimately give someone the greatest gift of all—the gift of life.
actually promotes positive physiological changes in the brain that are associated with happiness. In fact, when we give to others, our body releases endorphins that help activate areas of the brain associated with trust, pleasure and social connection. In addition, when we help those in need, it can provide perspective on our own daily lives. Those things that may have been a source of stress for you may not seem so bad after witnessing the losses that others have experienced.
Another way that teens and adults can help is through mission trips to the areas that were impacted by the hurricanes or other natural disasters. For years after Hurricane Katrina, people flocked to New Orleans to help rebuild homes and lives. They will be doing the same after the impact of hurricanes Harvey and Irma.
In a 1996 study, evidence showed that altruistic behavior can actually help boost our physical health through helping to stabilize our immune system against immunosuppressing effects of stress. And those endorphins that are released are also a natural painkiller. It’s a win-win for everyone!
My son was 14 when he traveled with a local church group to help the families devastated by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. I was thrilled as he described his trip with such great enthusiasm. He found so much joy in connecting with people and helping them out in their time of need. It was definitely a life-changing event for him.
What does it mean to be altruistic? There are many behaviors that can be defined as altruistic, and the best part is that they are easy to implement into our daily lives. Generosity: Being generous can be a simple act such as helping a neighbor with lawn care or snow shoveling. Offer your talents to help someone in need. Are you handy around the house? Check out your local Habitat for Humanity to see what you can do to help a family building a new home. Do you love to cook? Offer to bring a meal to someone who may be struggling financially or emotionally. A little bit of generosity can change how we perceive others and can help bring joy to others at the same time.
If you are interested in such a trip, check with local churches and community groups, such as Rotary, to see if there are any planned trips to help out. Often times, they will have sponsors for the trip so the cost to you is minimal, and the reward is great! Altruism displayed in many ways The benefits of giving back to others not only gives one a good feeling emotionally, but it is reported that altruistic behavior

Kindness: Have you ever heard someone tell you that if you smile when you speak to someone on the phone, they can “hear” that smile on the other end? We all have good and bad days, but a smile and a kind gesture can go a long way to brightening someone else’s day as well as your own.
to connect with people, leading to new relationships that will hopefully be a blessing to us for years to come. Providing rest for the weary It was just three years ago when Scott Smalling was first inspired to form his nonprofit, Relief Bed International. A Gig Harbor, Washington, native and longtime mattressindustry businessman, Smalling hit the ground running and has been making a dramatic impact on the lives of those in need ever since.
Compassion: Being compassionate requires a willingness and ability to enter into the feelings and experiences of others. For people who are seeking to provide compassion, the greatest thing one can do is to simply be with that person and listen to and validate their feelings. Remember to keep your own wellbeing in check as well. It is easy to become overwhelmed with another’s problems, so maintain your own emotional, physical and spiritual health.
Relief Bed International was first launched in September of 2015 and provides innovative beds to help the poor and homeless as well as those who are victims of disasters. While their reach is worldwide, they have a special focus on the homelessness in North America.
Volunteering: Giving back to others through donations of our time and talent is beneficial to not only those who volunteer but also the community they serve. It is also a wonderful way
• VOLUNTEERING TEACHES YOU NEW SKILLS From helping make websites, to teaching immigrant kids your native language, to arranging events for charity; volunteering can really be almost anything. That means that when you get involved in charity work, a lot of the time you will face challenges just as you would in a new job. And through overcoming these you learn and start to master completely new skills.
• VOLUNTEERING HELPS YOU STAY ACTIVE Sometimes when you need to do something the most is when you feel the least like doing anything. This is where volunteering can help out. It’s a lot more difficult to blow off volunteering than a casual appointment with a friend. So when you feel poorly, and you don’t really

want to-but really need to-stay active, volunteering is your friend.
• VOLUNTEERING FILLS EMPTY SPACES ON YOUR RESUMÉ If your job search seems to be taking longer than you had expected, you might want to consider volunteering. It’s a way to prove that you’ve not just been idle the whole time but instead that you’ve been actively taking steps that can help you better your situation.
• VOLUNTEERING CAN LEAD TO WORK I’ve seen people volunteer with no expectations, and further down the road, are hired to work for a nonprofit as a coordinator. Of course this line of work is not for everyone, but thankfully volunteering will give you a good idea of whether or not it’s a viable career path for you.
“My original concept after creating our product was to work primarily with international relief agencies like World Vision,” said Smalling. “Although after only two to three months, I was very intrigued by the homeless plight in the U.S.”
As adults, there are many ways we can help depending upon time and talent. During the recent Las Vegas shooting, the greatest need was the donation of blood. While one can pray that a tragedy like this never happens again, much less in our own communities, we can do our part to help in even the smallest of circumstances.
The natural disasters that have taken place in the last few months have certainly kept Smalling busy. “We have distributed 1,200 relief beds to victims of Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma, the Santa Rosa fires and the earthquake in Mexico,” he said. “It is unprecedented to have this many natural disasters in North America in such a short amount of time.” Although Smalling has been in the field distributing beds on many occasions, this time he stayed at his headquarters and did what he could to keep up with the demand. And while Relief Bed International has worked hard on doing what they can to assist the victims of the recent natural disasters, they also are busy each and every day working to provide the homeless with a comfortable bed to sleep on.
As we enter this holiday season of festive celebrations and parties, let’s each of us also think about how blessed we truly are and consider sharing some of our gifts, whether it is time, talent or financial, with others who are hurting. The feeling you receive will be the greatest gift of all.
Relief Bed International is funded approximately 30 percent by individual donations, and 50 percent of the donations are self-funding from Smalling’s for-profit business. “The other 20 percent comes from various places such as corporate donations,” said Smalling, adding that by going onto his

LIVING WITH
INTENTION The road to a more fulfilling life By Patty Hutchens
“Play with abandon. Laugh. Choose with no regret. Appreciate your friends. Continue to learn. Do what you love. Live as if this is all there is.” - Mary Anne Radmacher Why should life be different as an adult? We all need to take time to f you are like most people, you occasionally have one of those days enjoy life, laugh and spend time with those we love. Sounds easy, right? where you throw up your hands and just say, “I give up!” Many of Not really. Not in a world that is hectic and hurried and driven by a need us are so consumed with the day-to-day commitments in our lives of instant gratification. Add into that the technology that seems to be that at times we feel we just can’t keep up. We crawl into bed tired always at our fingertips. and weary. As you seek to live a life full of intent, evaluate what it is in your life that What if you could change all that? What if you could control your life makes you happy. What values are most important to you? Are there instead of letting it control you? Intentional living may mean different people who tend to bring negativity into your life? Set boundaries and things to different people, but in the end the result is the same—happiness choose to surround yourself with joyful people and engage in activities and fulfillment. that make you happy and bring you fulfillment.
I
In the quest to live an intentional life, examine your values and beliefs, and reflect on what makes you happy. As children, we played with abandon. We laughed and did not feel guilty for enjoying life; after all, there were few obligations other than a possible homework assignment pulling us in different directions.

Living with intention requires really getting to know who you are. Make a list of your passions, talents and yes … list your weaknesses. Reflect on the past and make a conscious decision to not allow any negativity to shape who you want to be. Look forward and define goals you would like to accomplish, and look at ways you can accomplish those goals. I grew up in a large city where I never felt what I did would truly make

an impact. But 20 years ago I moved to a small town where I instantly saw firsthand the work of volunteers making a significant impact on those in the community. I soon found myself involved in various nonprofits, choosing ones that supported causes that were near and dear to me. It brought fulfillment to know that I had a gift to give and could share it with others. Each year around the holidays, we hear of Shop Local campaigns. When I first heard it, my immediate thought was, “What is the big deal? I grew up in Minneapolis where the choices of where to shop were abundant. How can it make that big of a difference where I shop? But since moving to a town of only 7,000 residents, I have grown to know those who have worked hard their entire lives to build a business, and I now consciously choose to support those who have become my friends and neighbors, knowing that the money I spend will not only support

those people, but the entire community. Living with intention may require a great deal of self-examination in the beginning, but once realized, it opens a whole new way of looking at the world. When you wake in the morning, start by making a choice on what type of attitude you will have as you approach decisions that may come your way. Be purposeful in both your words and your actions. Engage in your community and at work. For many people, living intentionally also includes decluttering their lives—physically and emotionally. Examine your habits, situations and people that bring stress or unpleasantness. Likewise, look at how you can get rid of physical things that may add clutter to your life. Does a certain object add to your life? If not, give it away. It may be a treasure to someone less fortunate. It is refreshing to see what was once “the bigger the better” is now becoming a trend of minimalism. The latest trend of tiny homes

is one such indication of this new way of life for many. Perhaps one of the biggest obstacles one may have when it comes to living intentionally is holding onto past mistakes. Learning to forgive ourselves for things in the past is important to being able to move forward and fully embrace the life we want to live. Does living with intent mean that every day will be joyful? No. That is not real life. But if you learn to embrace those not-so-perfect days and focus on the positive, your blessings will be great. So go out, live a life where you can express your feelings and show the world the true authentic you. It will bring blessings to you and to those with whom you come in contact.

DOES YOUR INVESTMENT STRATEGY REFLECT YOUR PERSONAL VALUES? Edward Jones financial advisor, Ken Wood, discusses this new trend By Patty Hutchens
I
t has been a trend in our everyday life for a while now and is growing in popularity. Through sustainable living, consumers are becoming increasingly aware of how they can live an environmentally and socially responsible life. From green building to locally sourced food, those who practice sustainable living are doing their best to reduce their carbon footprint and preserve the Earth’s natural resources. Restaurants are making a conscious effort to bring “farm to table” offerings to their menu. The result is fresh food that also has a positive impact on their local farmers. For decades, our homes became bigger while our families became smaller, but that has changed with the tiny-home movement. People are opting to bike or walk as opposed to driving to destinations a short distance away. Recycling and composting have done much to reduce waste. These are all things that many people do each day to achieve their goal of sustainable living. But are you aware that you can also practice sustainable living when it comes to investing your hard earned money? While many of us think of the words “conservative” or “aggressive” when it comes to our investment strategy, sustainable, responsible and impact investing is a strategy that is gaining momentum in the investment world. Just what does it mean to be a “sustainable investor”? Naturally, one seeks for strong financial performance in his or her investments, but they also look for investments that have a positive impact on society or our environment. People seek to invest in companies that are making a difference in the world, either through giving back to the community or supporting programs that benefit our society. In the following interview, Ken Wood, a financial advisor with Edward Jones in Sandpoint, addresses many questions people have about this growing trend.

What is socially responsible investing (SRI)? Social responsible investing (SRI) is known by a lot of terms, including “green,” “ethical,” “sustainable” or “mission” based investing. Essentially, it involves taking someone’s personal values and aligning those with their investment strategy. It has been an expanding trend over the past 15 years as more people choose to invest with their heart as well as their head. In fact, the 2016 report by US SIF Foundation on sustainable investment trends indicated that $1 out of every $5 under professional management in the U.S. is allocated to SRI, and the market for SRI investments has increased 33 percent since 2014.
Why would someone consider social responsible investing? SRI appeals to a variety of people. Yet, their underlying reasoning for pursing this type of investment platform is because they want to align their moral values and beliefs with their money. In some cases, I find clients are seeking to avoid specific companies or industries. For example, I had a client whose mother had passed away from lung cancer after years of smoking. As such, she didn’t want any of her hard-earned money invested in tobacco-based companies. For other clients, they see it as a way to reward companies that pursue and adopt ethical and sustainable business standards. Every person I meet with has their own reason and story for wanting to pursue this investment strategy.
How is SRI applied in developing an investment portfolio? It really starts with a conversation around their personal principles and goals. The components of a well-diversified portfolio include a combination of equities and bonds built around an individual’s investment objectives and tolerance for risk. I spend a lot of time asking questions to both existing and potential clients about what they want their portfolio to accomplish. We try our best to eliminate companies and industries that are not in alignment with the individual’s moral values. Then, we try to find areas that an investor might be passionate about that could be suitable, long term investments for their portfolio.
SandpointLivingLocal.com
What are the risks involved with investing in this manner? I want to make it very clear that there is always some level of risk when investing. With that being said, when it comes to investing in socially responsible investments, there are some specific risks that people need to be aware of. First, sustainable investing often has many subjective qualities, and may mean different things to different people. This can result in a sustainable investment not aligning with all of a client’s desired qualities. Second, investments may not always receive high-sustainability scores from third-party evaluators, even if the fund is marketed as sustainable. Finally, certain sustainable funds have a narrow focus, which results in less diversification than we would generally find appropriate.
Where can I learn more about investing in SRI? Sustainable investing is becoming more prevalent as an investment strategy, and there are various resources available to those wanting to learn more about it. The Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investment, located at USSIF.org, has a variety of articles and information regarding this subject. In addition, CR Magazine (TheCRO.com) publishes an annual report called the Best Corporate Citizens list, highlighting companies that perform well in seven distinct categories such as environmental, philanthropy and corporate governance. Finally, I would encourage anyone interested to talk to a financial professional about their specific goals and investment objectives.
76
PEOPLE SEEK TO INVEST IN COMPANIES THAT ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD, EITHER THROUGH GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY OR SUPPORTING PROGRAMS THAT BENEFIT OUR SOCIETY.
Do I have to sacrifice potential returns if I want to follow a valuebased investment approach? As a financial professional, I have a legal duty and a strong desire to help clients take care of their money so that they can pursue the life they envision. I could not endorse an investment platform that didn’t assist my clients in achieving their individual goals. From the extensive research that I have done, I am convinced that it is not necessary to sacrifice your own values for investment performance. A properly constructed, welldiversified portfolio can be socially responsible, sustainable and provide comparable investment performance to conventional portfolios over a long period of time. Disclaimer: Diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss. Past performance is not a guarantee of future results.
What kind of investment options are available?
2016 Report on Sustainable & Responsible Investing Trends, 11th, 12-12. (2016). Retrieved April 02, 2017, from www.ussif.org.
There are various investment vehicles available to suit an individual investor’s needs. These include individual stocks and bonds, exchange-traded funds specific to SRI and various mutual funds. Many mutual-fund companies have even emerged that provide only religious-based and/or socially conscious specific funds.

CHIONOPHILES... AND THE BENEFITS OF BIG FEET IN A NIVEAN ENVIRONMENT BY MARY TERRA-BERNS
TRAVEL & LEISURE
“Nature says, ‘I’m going to snow. If you have on a bikini and no snowshoes, that’s tough. I am going to snow anyway.’” - Maya Angelou speech THE GREEK WORD FOR SNOW IS CHION. And when it comes to snow, you are either a phobe, euphore or a phile. A chionophobe is someone who doesn’t like snow and avoids it. Chioneuphores tolerate snow and chionophiles look forward to, and enjoy, snow and the winter months. As the days get shorter and nights get longer, fight the urge to hibernate. Instead of enduring the cold temperatures and snow by staying indoors wrapped in a cocoon of blankets, spread your winter wings and make the most of the nivean (snow) environment. Now is the time to ditch that bikini and break out the snowshoes!
about in the winter was critical for our ancestors’ survival. However, with our relatively small feet and big bodies, traveling in snow was a substantial challenge. At some point, probably when post-holing through thigh-deep snow, our human ancestors may have observed a snowshoe hare (or other big-footed chionophile) moving effortlessly across the top of the snow thanks to its big feet. Well, we humans may not have big feet, but we do have a big, creative brain; a brain that recognized the benefits of big feet and translated that knowledge into simple yet efficient devices that imitated the bunny’s big feet—snowshoes.

SNOWSHOEING AS A WINTER ACTIVITY HAS BECOME INCREASINGLY POPULAR, AND WHY NOT? IT’S EASY AND INEXPENSIVE, AND THE WHOLE FAMILY CAN PARTICIPATE.
evolved into a few functional shapes and sizes, which were influenced by location, type of use and snow conditions. Initially, skis were called long snowshoes and snowshoes were called raquettes by French Canadians, because of their similarity to tennis rackets, and webs by Europeans who recently arrived in America. But, by the early 1900s, raquettes and webs became snowshoes, and long snowshoes were known as skis. Snowshoes were indispensable winter survival gear for Native Americans, trappers and explorers but were also used for winter sports. In the mid-1800s, several snowshoe clubs on the eastern side of Canada conducted racing competitions. Recreational snowshoeing was born. Snowshoeing as a winter activity has become increasingly popular, and why not? It’s easy
and inexpensive, and the whole family can participate. If you can walk, you can snowshoe. Aluminum frames and neoprene decking make moderns snowshoes lightweight and maneuverable. Also, bindings have improved. Rotating-toe cord bindings allow the tail of the snowshoe to drag instead of being lifted, which requires less energy. The fixed-toe cord binding allows the whole shoe to be lifted, which makes it easier to step over obstacles or run on packed trails, but requires more energy. Crampons can be added for extra traction and stability; however, if you are moving through downfall, you may want to remove them because they easily catch on wood and can trip you up. Insulated boots that support your ankles and hiking poles provide additional stability. The increased popularity of snowshoeing has seen recreational programs pop up everywhere in snow country. programs, colleges, ski resorts and park facilities offer workshops, demonstrations, clinics and races. Some national parks and ski resorts loan out snowshoes for day use. State Park and Recreation agencies have designated snow-park locations (large parking lots kept clear of snow) for winter recreationalists. Some snow parks have groomed trails dispersing from the parking lot and are typically intended for cross-county skiers and snowmobilers. However, with the continued popularity of snowshoeing, trails nowadays often have a designated side for the shoeing crowd. Snow conditions dictate the style and size of snowshoe best suited for the day’s travel. That fluffy white stuff isn’t always fluffy; the snowpack has different densities. If you are venturing out on dense, compact snow, a smaller snowshoe is adequate. In some instances, if you are smaller and don’t weigh a

lot, you can walk without snowshoes on top of this type of snow. However, if you are looking to trek through some champagne powder, that beautiful light, fluffy stuff, you will need to go with a bigger snowshoe. Even with a larger snowshoe you will still sink a few inches, and breaking trail in powder is quite a workout. Go with a few friends so you can switch off trailbraking duty. Most dogs enjoy the snow, and snowshoeing is a great activity for many fur-faces. My furry four-legged companions love the snow. However, they usually are not allowed on groomed trails. No matter, they will gladly follow you as you break trail on any snowshoe adventure. They figure out very quickly that it is easier to bring up the rear while you do all the hard work. Once the trail is established, they will happily run ahead investigating the nivean environment. Dogs are quick to pick up the scent of any wild critter that has crossed your path. If you are out and about after new, sparkling snow has settled, usually 24 to 48 hours, you are likely to see a variety of animal tracks. I spent years snow-tracking
on various wildlife research projects and still enjoy spotting and trailing tracks to identify what kind of chionophile was out and what they were doing. If you do have your pups with you while exploring the nivean environment, keep in mind, particularly if you are on public land, winter is when trappers are out setting their trap lines. Watch for boot tracks or snowshoe trails. Pay attention to your dog’s behavior, especially when they pick up an unusual scent. Different attractants are used—sometimes a can of sardines, sometimes a lure that smells like skunk. If you notice other human tracks, smell skunk or see your dog overly focused on a specific spot, rein them in and move on because there is likely a trap or traps set in the area. There are numerous guide books that describe routes (some are summer hiking trails), from easy to extreme, and give advice for trekking during the winter. On the other hand, you may want to go it on your own and enjoy the freedom of making your own path. Keep in

mind that landmarks look different in the winter, so having some navigation savvy is wise. Additionally, if you are following tracks made by some other adventurer, you should have a good sense of where the tracks lead—the route may be an avalanche hotspot that you should avoid, or you may be following someone with more extreme genes than yourself. Always take plenty of food and water. Most importantly, always let someone know where you are going and when you expect to be back—cell phones don’t always have reception in the backcountry. Safety first! Still resisting breaking out of your cocoon and committing to living the life of a chionophile? Here’s some additional incentive; you can burn about 450 calories per hour while snowshoeing! A lot more if you are breaking trail in powder. Snowshoeing will keep you trim and fit throughout the winter and come spring, when the sun is shining warm and bright, you can confidently don that bikini that has been hibernating since last fall.

POTATO-LEEK SOUP Courtesy of Erica Gregerson, Northwest Living Recipe Contest Winner
INGREDIENTS For the Soup: • 5 leeks (white and light green parts only), roughly chopped • 3 Ibs. Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and roughly chopped • 6 cups rich chicken stock • 1 cup heavy cream • 3 tbsp. butter • 3 large garlic cloves, peeled and pressed • 2 bay leaves • 1 - 2 sprigs fresh thyme • 1 tsp. salt • ¼ tsp. ground pepper • 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg
For the Leeks • Vegetable oil (enough to fill the bottom of the pan 2-inches deep) • Leeks, whole • Flour • Breadcrumbs • Eggs • Salt and pepper
METHOD For the Soup: • In large stockpot on stovetop, melt butter and add leeks, along with garlic. Cook on medium heat just until soft; immediately add to stockpot potatoes and chicken stock. Lastly, add bay leaves, thyme, salt, pepper and nutmeg. • Bring to a boil then reduce heat to medium and simmer, covered, until potatoes are fork tender. Remove herbs and blend until very smooth with either a handheld immersion blender or process in batches through food processor or upright blender. • Once blended (and returned to stockpot if necessary), add heavy cream and stir. • Remove from heat and serve immediately. • Favorite serving suggestion: Top each bowl of soup with a dollop of herbed fromage blanc (or Boursin) cheese, crispy bacon bits and fried leek rings. Enjoy!
SandpointLivingLocal.com
88
For the Leeks: • Fill a deep cast-iron or heavy-bottom pan with 2 inches vegetable oil and heat on medium until ready to fry. • Wash whole leek (kept fully intact) and slice thin rings from white end. • Separate into individual rings and dredge in whole beaten egg then follow by dredging in a mixture of flour, breadcrumbs, salt and pepper. • Increase heat to high until oil is very hot and bubbles rapidly when a test leek ring is gently placed in oil. Fry in small batches, turning once, until golden brown. • Remove to paper towel, and while still hot, lightly season with salt to taste.
Come enjoy the wholesome goodness of Millers. Made fresh with love every day.

PROSCIUTTO-WRAPPED ASPARAGUS WITH CHEVRE AND HUCKLEBERRIES AND HUCKLEBERRY VINAIGRETTE Courtesy of Chef Dave Adlard, Candle in the Woods Another of our signature Amuse Bouche, this is a wonderfully easy dish with a perfect amount of savory and sweet. How can you go wrong with bacon? We serve this as a “shared” dish, but it can easily be served to individuals, or even with several on a platter for an appetizer for a group.
INGREDIENTS • 4 - 6 pieces of fresh, medium asparagus per bundle (depending on size); asparagus that is too thick doesn’t work as well. • 1 piece of prosciutto per bundle
(winter), Persimmon and pumpkin (fall), mixed berry (spring) and huckleberry (summer). Our berry and huckleberry are crafted for us.) • Drizzle of huckleberry or other berry vinaigrette
• 1 oz. of room temperature chevre per bundle • Jam or preserves of your choice. (We use various ones depending on the season, including fig
METHOD • Cut the asparagus to 6-in. lengths. • Blanch the asparagus in salted water (1 minute to 90 seconds, depending on thickness). While blanching, prepare a large bowl with ice water. • After blanching, immediately remove the asparagus from the boiling water and immerse in the ice water to stop the cooking process. • Mix the chevre and the jam thoroughly. • When cool, remove asparagus from ice water and dry with paper towels. • Place one piece of prosciutto on your preparation surface. • Spread 1 oz. of chevre/berry mixture on the prosciutto • Lay the pieces of asparagus (1/2 facing each way) at a slight angle on top of the prosciutto and carefully roll up. • Preheat oven to 400°F. • About 30 minutes before service, bake for 7 minutes at 400°F. Let cool until just warm.

• Cut in half on a diagonal and serve with a drizzle of vinaigrette.

A TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO SERVED Take in some of the Veterans Day activities in Sandpoint By Patty Hutchens.
VETERANS DAY, ORIGINALLY KNOWN AS ARMISTICE DAY, marked the first anniversary of the end of World War I on November 11, 1919, and became a national holiday in 1938. It is a day set aside to honor all those who have served our country honorably during war or peacetime—and there are many. Following are just some statistics that may surprise you. • 16.1 million living veterans served during at least one war. • 5.2 million veterans served in peacetime. • 2 million veterans are women. • 7 million veterans served during the Vietnam War. • 2 million veterans served during the Korean War. Here in Sandpoint, there will be many activities for our veterans and for those who wish to honor them. North Summit Church at 201 North Division will be holding a Heroes’ Breakfast from 8:30 to 11am on Saturday, November 11. This special time is devoted to honor the men and women who have served our country. On November 10 at the Panida Theater, there will be a Veterans Celebration at 7pm with the doors opening at 6:30pm. Admission is free, however donations are accepted and will be distributed to local veterans’ organizations. This will be a special time to celebrate and show appreciation for the service of all veterans and provides a wonderful opportunity to involve our children and share with them the importance of honoring our servicemen and women. The evening will begin with the presentation of the Color Guard, the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of the Star Spangled Banner. The feature presentation will be a showing of the movie “Faith of Our Fathers.” These are just some of the things taking place to celebrate Veterans Day in our area. Do you know a veteran? Please help spread the word about these and other events that will show them the appreciation they deserve. And while you are at it, remember to extend a thank you for all they have done for our country.
