IT’S THANKSGIVING TIME, which also marks the beginning of the holidays. Ushering in the season filled with shopping, holiday parties and spending time with family, Thanksgiving is a time to reflect; a time to give thanks for all that we have been blessed with. Personally, I love Thanksgiving because it represents so much more than a day of reflection. It means coming together as a family to carry on traditions that have been established throughout the years. Whether it is participating in an early Thanksgiving morning fun run, getting together with friends and family to play a game of football or simply working together in the kitchen preparing cherished family recipes, families often have their own traditions that they look forward to each year. And if you are a Dallas Cowboys or Detroit Lions fan, well there is always the guarantee of a pro football game on Thanksgiving Day to cheer on your favorite team!
208.265.8827
There are some families whose tradition is to volunteer at a local shelter, soup kitchen or other venue that is putting on community Thanksgiving dinners for those who are less fortunate, homeless or alone. It’s a wonderful way to teach children the importance of not only being thankful but of giving back to your community. As you go forward into the holiday season, remember to carve out time for those important traditions. And if you find you don’t really have any specific traditions, now is a great time to start! After all, traditions are what memories are made of.

What to Buy Where? BY NIKKI LUTTMANN, DESIGNER, SANDPOINT FURNITURE CARPET ONE, A DIVISION OF PONDERAY DESIGN CENTER
T
echnology is becoming a bigger part of our lives every day, whether we want it to or not. One of the most common ways technology has affected our lives is how we purchase things.
However, online purchasing can be a slippery slope. For example, need a new mattress? A sofa? There are lots of online pop-ups just for that purpose. But, with a mattress or even a sofa, how do you know how it will feel? Is it supportive? Does it work for your bad back? There are certain things that just need to be tried before you buy, and I call these “inperson” purchases. After all, you will be sitting or sleeping on this item for years to come. If it is uncomfortable, smells weird or is just plain wrong, the purchaser is often stuck with it. The online store may offer free returns, but the purchaser is responsible for the return shipping. And shipping a sofa

across the country may be cost-prohibitive, to say the least! In the flooring industry, it is common for us to hear that someone found their dream flooring cheaper online. That may be true, but the buyer must beware. For example, the price per square foot might be less, but there may be hidden costs associated with shipping, etc. Also, if there is an issue, will the online store honor the manufacturer’s warranty? Often, the warranty is rendered void if the product is purchased through an online vendor. Other issues you might face include shipping logistics. Say you purchase 1,500 square feet of tile for your new home. You found a great deal online and have even done your due diligence, ordering yourself a sample first to make sure you like the actual color and texture. Then, a delivery driver calls;
GIVE thanks for the HARVEST GIVE Fall is the time to create a warm and inviting space for your family. What a blessing it is to gather for a meal and conversation with friends and loved ones. Now is the time to visit Sandpoint Furniture for inspiration. It’s all on sale during our Harvest Dining Event.

You'll never know until YOU try! the tile is scheduled for delivery. Do you have a shipping dock or a forklift? Are you on a dirt road? Are load limits in place? And, if they manage to get it to your home, how will you get it out of the truck? You are now the proud owner of two pallets of tile (weighing in roughly at a ton apiece) in the back of a delivery truck. We’ve had more than one call from a homeowner in distress who has faced that very situation. And the final, best reason to purchase something in person is because you know the dollars will stay in our community. Shopping local supports not only the owners of the business but the people who work there. And by shopping local, our dollars go to work in other local stores and into the community itself—to our churches, our schools, our nonprofits and community groups. And after all, isn’t that what made us all fall in love with this area in the first place? We live in a wonderful, giving, colorful, eclectic community. And you can’t buy that on Amazon.
Bringing your purchase home the same day is way more satisfying!

FINANCIAL FOCUS IS YOUR “DIGITAL ESTATE” IN ORDER?
THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY YOUR LOCAL EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR, KEN WOOD.
I
f you spend a lot of time on the Internet, you’re not just shopping or being entertained, or following the news or participating in an online community. You’re probably also dealing with accounts and information that eventually can become part of your digital “estate.” And if this estate isn’t properly looked after, it can lead to confusion and conflict among your survivors, as well as an opportunity for hackers to try to get at whatever resources they can touch. If you haven’t stopped to think about it, you might be surprised at the number of assets that could become part of your digital estate. You may have financial accounts (banking, brokerage and bill-paying); virtual property accounts (air miles, “points” for hotel bookings); business accounts (eBay, Amazon, Etsy); email accounts (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo); social networking accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram); online storage accounts (Google Drive, iCloud, Drobox); and application accounts (Netflix, Kindle, Apple). Given all these areas, how can you protect and preserve your digital estate? Here are a few suggestions: • Create a detailed inventory of digital assets. Following the categories listed above, draw up a list of all your digital assets. • Document your wishes for how you want your digital assets managed. If you don’t specify how you want your digital assets managed upon your death or incapacitation, you might be opening the door to lengthy legal battles over access to these assets. In a worst-case scenario, your heirs and beneficiaries might never get the assets you had intended for them. • Name a digital executor in your last will and testament. A digital executor can accomplish a variety of tasks related to your digital estate, such as transferring online assets to your heirs; closing accounts you don’t want transferred; managing personal materials by archiving or deleting files, photographs, videos and other content you have created; and, finally, informing online communities of your passing. When choosing a digital executor, you’ll want someone you can trust, of course, but you’ll also
SandpointLivingLocal.com
26
want to make sure that person is skilled enough in technology to search your computer properly and navigate the Internet and multiple websites. Not all states recognize a digital executor, so you may want to consult with a legal professional to learn about the laws governing digital estate planning in your state. Also, even if you have a digital executor, online platforms enforce their own rules about who can or can’t access a deceased person’s accounts. If you are concerned about this, you may want to contact the customer service areas from these types of providers –Google, PayPal, Facebook, etc.—to learn their policies. • Review your plans. Review your digital estate plans on a regular basis, just as you do with your physical/tangible estate plans. The digital world is a fast-moving one, so you’ll need to stay current with changes. In some ways, managing a digital estate can be more challenging than dealing with a physical estate. But by following the above suggestions, you can help reduce any “cyber-angst” your loved ones may feel when it’s time to deal with the digital presence you’ve left behind.
TEACHER OF THE MONTH BY PATTY HUTCHENS

around to provide assistance. With this system, students go home, watch the video and take notes resulting in minimal stress.”
N
achele Search, now in her 24th year of teaching at Sandpoint High School and her 32nd year overall, is a respected instructor whose dedication has been steadfast throughout her career. A math teacher, Nachele teaches algebra II and pre-calculus and teaches both traditional classes and “flipped” classes of both subjects. “I started flipped class about five years ago with pre-calculus. This is the first year for algebra II,” said Nachele. She explains that the “flipped” concept is that students watch a video presentation and take notes on the new lesson on their own time in exchange for using their class time to work on assignments. This enables them to come to class and work in groups where they talk about math with other students and can receive assistance from the teacher. “The video is made during the lesson of the traditional class,” said Nachele. “My reason for doing this is that I believe many students go home and are frustrated because they get stuck on their assignments with no one usually
Nachele is also the advisor for Sandpoint High School’s Math Club, where students participate in competitions in Spokane, at North Idaho College and host one at SHS. To raise money, the students assemble and sell sandbags, recently filling 620 bags. The sand is donated by Lake Pre-Mix, and the bags are sold by the Co-Op, Les Schwab and Sandpoint Super Drug. “Probably the neatest event though is the fifth and sixth grade Math Olympiad that the high school Math Club hosts,” said Nachele. “This is a math competition for fifth and sixth graders in our district. Last year we had almost 100 elementary kids participate. High school Math Club members proctor, grade and present awards,” said Nachele. The administration at Sandpoint High School chose Nachele as Teacher of the Month for what they describe as her solid instruction, her positive rapport with students, her advising role with clubs and her willingness to assist with extra duties when needed. The Lake Pend Oreille School District is fortunate to have Nachele as a teacher, and her dedication to the success of the students at SHS is something to be celebrated. Thank you Nachele for all you do for our students.

Dr. Ernie Ward, nationally renowned veterinarian, pet author and founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, offers his 'Top 5 Healthy Habits' for pet owners to help ensure pets stay happy and healthy throughout the year: 1. Healthy Eats and Treats. The most important decision you make each day regarding your pet's health is what you feed it. When choosing pet food, look for meat as one of the first few ingredients, and avoid byproducts, artificial flavors, colors and preservatives whenever possible. When it comes to treats, look for low-calorie options that confer some health benefit. Treats that help maintain healthy joints, clean teeth or ensure pills are taken are recommended. The Greenies Brand specializes in great-tasting treats individually formulated to deliver these benefits. If you're going to give treats, make them count!

2. Brain Boosters. Most people love puzzles—and so does your pet! One of the best ways to feed and treat pets is with a food puzzle. These clever devices hide your pet’s food or treats until they unlock the secret and get their goodies. These tools engage your pet's brain and bust boredom while you're away. Forget peanut butter-stuffed toys; these toys stimulate thought and don't pack on the pounds! 3. Power Play. Walking your dog and playing with your cat each day keeps them trim, healthy and mentally alert. Pets that don't receive enough physical activity ("lap potatoes") have the highest rates of weightrelated diseases such as arthritis and diabetes and suffer from behavioral problems. For dogs, 20 to 30 minutes of brisk walking each day benefits both ends of the leash. For cats, two or three five-minute play periods are plenty. And don't worry! Walking with your pet can be fun! Try programs like Greenies Wag & Walk 4 Life, and get active with your pet. 4. Paws Together. It's more fun to play with other dogs! Socialized dogs are simply better behaved and more fun. Visit a dog park, enroll in training classes or become active in serving your community. There

are endless ways to get you and your dog to interact with other pet lovers. Share the fun and join a new pack! 5. Pets and Vets. Somehow pet owners started believing that the only time you need a vet is when something is wrong with your pet. The secret to a long and healthy life is vet visits when everything appears fine. A pet owner's primary goal should be to prevent disease, not only treat it. Changes in diet or lifestyle, giving nutritional supplements and exercising more are straight-forward solutions. Sometimes you just need a prod; other times a push. Your veterinarian is your pet's voice; let them speak for your pet by visiting once a year for young pets and twice yearly for those over age seven.

“There is a form of massage for every body.”
A
h, a massage! Thinking of a spa-type setting with calming wall tones, soothing water feature, robes and slippers with an endless supply of cucumber water? Well, let me take a quote from Donnie Brasco—“Forgetaboutit!” Friends, let me introduce you to Kirsten Longmeier, LMT and owner of Sandpoint Medical Massage & Bodyworks. Located in the Pine Street Annex, you walk into the secondfloor office to a modest waiting room with a conventional water cooler—no cucumber or lemon wedges. Throughout the office there are posters of the body’s anatomy and physical skeletal models. You soon begin to throw out “massage” and focus on “medical.” Let the education of my recovery commence. Surprisingly, the practice is so focused on healing medical conditions, clients can use major medical insurance. From fibromyalgia to maternity, the spectrum of conditions their services treat is vast. The practice includes three additional licensed massage therapists (LMT) who specialize in various areas of recovery bringing immense diversification. After struggling with a few aches and pains of my own, I finally broke down and made an appointment. Kirsten sent me a detailed questionnaire prior to my appointment to become familiar with my case, and then spent several minutes at the beginning of the appointment confirming her findings. She goes on to outline my individualized level of treatment, educating me on myofascial release,
which she studied at Oregon School of Massage. She has also studied abroad taking courses in massage in Thailand, implementing Eastern and Western styles of treatments in her practice. Let me be direct, this was not “pampering.” This was “bodywork.” Similar to a vigorous workout, the treatment was uncomfortable, but you persevere knowing the results are promising. Asking what she likes to do for fun and relaxation, I was surprised at her answer. Outside of family (husband Shaun and two children ages 5 and 2), gardening and knitting, Kirsten goes on to say, “I like digging deeper into anatomy and physiology, trying to discover what causes pain and the imbalances of the body.” She looks forward to expanding on her education and is eyeing a cadaver class in the near future. The entire family is focused on primitive and ancestry skills as a lifestyle from their Priest River home. Shortly after moving to North Idaho, Kirsten started a Threshold Choir, which is a group of women who sing a cappella to people at bedside. The choir is affiliated with local hospice and long-term care groups to sing gentle songs and lullabies to those who are suffering and/or are alone. Check out ThresholdChoir.org. A holistic and effective approach to health care, that’s Sandpoint Medical Massage & Bodyworks (SandpointMedMassage.com). Passionate, professional, educated, family oriented, community focused ... ith four decades serving the Sandpoint community, Northwest Auto Body and Towing, Inc. has been providing auto body collision repair and towing with exceptional technical skills since 1978.
In 2014, Northwest Auto Body opened its second location in Ponderay, providing Bonner County residents two options to choose from for their auto body repair needs. Between the two locations, they provide service to the Inland Northwest including North Idaho, Northeastern Washington and Northwestern Montana. The business, originally opened by Mel Donenfeld, continues to flourish as his sons, Eric and Cory Donenfeld, have taken ownership. Born and raised in Sandpoint, the brothers were taught strict values, a strong work ethic and to immerse themselves in their community and involvement within it, thanks to their father. The pair credits him and the principles he instilled in them, as well as their employees who consistently meet the demands of quality, value and service, to aiding them in the continued success of Northwest Auto Body. “We provide quality high-standard customer service from the moment an accident happens until the vehicle is repaired,” says Eric. “We also have the most updated equipment and training for our employees.”

with technically advanced repair facility. Watching our employees grow and flourish to meet the demands that Northwest Auto Body requires and seeing the smiles and amazement when our customers see their finished vehicles.” Thankful to own a business—two businesses—in beautiful North Idaho surrounded by a supportive community, it is important for Eric and Cory to give back to and be a part of that community that has supported Northwest Auto Body for the past 40 years. Eric is a Rotarian and served on the .Friends of the Pend d'Oreille Bay Trail Board while Cory is a member of the Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce, BNI and North Idaho College’s Auto-Body Program. “We have and will continue to participate and donate to several local charities and encourage all of our employees to do the same,” says Eric and Cory. A Life-Changing Journey
Mission trip confirms Sandpoint teen’s life path BY PATTY HUTCHENS PHOTOS COURTSEY OF COLE RUSSO

F
or Cole Russo, having his driver’s license and his own vehicle finally meant that he could have the freedom to do more of what he was drawn to. That can mean many different things to teenagers, but for Cole, it meant he could attend three different youth groups in the evenings during the week. “I wanted to learn more about my religion and be armed with knowledge when asked about being a Christian,” said Cole. “I really want to teach others about Christianity.” It was through his experience of attending several youth groups, including one held at Scott Fitchett’s home, another at North Summit Church and a third at First Baptist, that led Cole to embark on an adventure of a lifetime this past summer. Cole, along with 10 others from Sandpoint, traveled to the Czech Republic for two weeks on a mission trip, teaching Czech teenagers English and also sharing with them about what it means to be a Christian. Before they left in July, the group spent several months preparing and bonding as a group. They explored their weaknesses and strengths while learning what gift each of them had to contribute to the experience. “My

strength is connecting and talking with others,” said Cole. He was sponsored in part by North Summit Church and also asked family and friends for contributions. “I sent a letter asking them to give whatever they could, whether it was money or prayers. Every bit helped,” said Cole. Upon arriving, the group of Americans spent three days in training and acclimating to the time change. “The country is primarily atheist. Many kids had never met a Christian, and it’s frowned upon in their country. Many see Christianity as a cult,” shared Cole. But after seeing how happy and connected the American group was with one another and with God, it made a significant impact on the more than 50 kids they interacted with. The leaders, both American and Czech, woke up early each morning and participated in a morning sermon, worship songs and Bible lessons. Afterward, everyone gathered for breakfast. “We then had a three-hour English class,” said Cole. Following lunch there were several activities during the afternoon and also some free time. “And after dinner we had a nightly sermon.”

After graduation in the spring, Cole plans to attend Bethany Global University in Minnesota and receive a master’s in biblical theology. “I would like to be a full-time missionary and eventually start my own church,” said Cole.
The groups stayed in a “pension,” similar to a youth hostel, with one American and five Czech students to a room. They would stay up late sharing stories and talking about God. Cole said there were times when he had to really push through, despite being too tired, staying up until 3am some nights sharing his story of Christianity with the kids. But it wasn’t just the Czech kids who benefited from the experience—Cole did, too. “I grew both personally and spiritually,” he says, adding that he learned to be more patient, one of the weaknesses he had identified in his preparation for the trip. After the seven days with the kids were over, the American group traveled to Prague. “It’s the most gorgeous city I’ve ever seen. The way it is preserved is incredible. It was never bombed during either of the World Wars,” said Cole. The leaders of the Sandpoint group included Chad Morrison of North Summit Church, someone who Cole says, along with Scott Fitchett, has been most influential on him when it comes to Cole’s spiritual growth. “Scotty opened up my eyes to look at things differently,” said Cole. “And both Chad and Scotty have been heavily involved in sculpting me to become a Christian—in my own way, not their way.”
SandpointLivingLocal.com
This was Cole’s first mission trip, and he said it is definitely an experience that confirmed what he has already set as his career goal. After graduation in the spring, Cole plans to attend Bethany Global University in Minnesota and receive a master’s in biblical theology. “I would like to be a full-time missionary and eventually start my own church,” said Cole. He explains that the university is a four-year college, with two of the years spent abroad learning all there is to know about being a missionary. Cole advises that if anyone is considering a mission trip, they should definitely go for it. “You may never get the opportunity again. You will never get to meet the kind of people I did. It’s a big commitment, but it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” When Cole left the Czech Republic, he left knowing he had made a lasting impression on the youth he had spent his time with. “I was surprised at how accepted we were by the kids. They really opened up to us and many cried when we left,” said Cole, who keeps in contact with a few of the kids. “This was an experience I’d love to have again. Especially by seeing the impact we had on kids in only seven days.”

ollywood is known for churning out blockbusters, and if one takes hold, you can bet that a second and third are already being planned. The same goes for remakes, reimaginings and prequels. Audiences are gravitating toward characters and storylines they are familiar with and are eager to see the lead up to their favorite characters or perhaps the conclusions. More than 30 years after its debut, another sequel is in the works that many ‘80s action fans are eagerly anticipating. Cinema’s most famous pilot is back for “Top Gun; Maverick.” The long-awaited sequel to the original 1986 “Top Gun” has been in the works for some time, and production on the sequel began earlier this summer. Only a few details of the plot have emerged, but according
to “Variety,” Tom Cruise’s character will now be an instructor, with the film exploring “a world of drone technology, fifth-generation fighters and the end of the era of dog-fighting.”
People throughout the world caught a glimpse of Wilson’s distinguished career as it was Wilson who was the inspiration for “Viper,” the commander of Top Gun played by Tom Skerritt.
The movie made Cruise and Val Kilmer household names, and the sound engineering and battle scenes were groundbreaking for its time. The original story is centered around a group of real-life aviators, one of whom has ties to North Idaho.
In addition to leading the Navy Fighter Weapons School, Top Gun, Wilson logged more than 150 missions over Vietnam and Laos, was a lead force in the ACEVAL/AIMVAL joint missile and tactics test at Nellis AFB in Nevada, earned six Air Medals for heroism and served as the Commander for Fighter Squadron TWO.
Christopher “Boomer” Wilson, a resident of Hope at the time of his 2010 death, was a 28-year veteran of naval aviation, having accumulated more than 5,400 hours in the air for the U.S. Navy and taking the controls of 30 different types of aircraft.

But to Wilson’s family, his career, although remarkable, was nothing in comparison to the man he was. To them he was simply known as Dad, Chris and Pop Pop; a man who enjoyed nothing more than being with friends and family

and playing and joking with his grandchildren. “He was such a humble man,” said Kim Russo, Wilson’s daughter and a resident of Sandpoint. “In fact, I did not even know of many of his accomplishments until his funeral.” Growing up, Kim said they were primarily stationed in San Diego with the exception of one year when the family lived in Las Vegas. Following her parents’ divorce when she was 12 years old, Wilson was stationed in Hawaii and finished out his career working at the Pentagon. “I remember he would fly in before the ship arrived,” said Kim of the memories of greeting her dad as he returned from a mission. “We
would run to give him a big hug when he got off the plane.” Kim said she and her siblings did not really know what their dad did on a daily basis. “We just knew he was Dad and that he had a cool job,” she said. Wilson’s wife Tere said she, too, knew little about his career. But since his untimely death from cancer, she has been privileged to learn more of her husband’s career from many of Boomer’s comrades. “His early F-8 days and flying missions in Vietnam were most likely some of his fondest and most challenging times,” said Tere. “He

always felt badly and personally challenged about his long cruises away from his family.” She adds, however, that Wilson felt honored to be able to contribute to something that was bigger than his own life and personal goals—the Navy and the United States of America. When she was about 13 years old, Kim recalls learning a bit more about the important work her dad did when his career was depicted in Top Gun. “I got to go to the set and meet Tom Cruise during the volleyball scene,” said Kim, who was likely the envy of all her teenage friends. “Jack Epps wrote the script and spent two months with Boomer and the instructors at the
Top Gun school,” explained Tere. “He used many of Boomer’s stories, along with the other guys' stories, while writing the script.” In fact, the famous coffee cup spilling fly-by was Boomer’s story, however, significantly toned down from the actual incident. During his young days as a pilot, Boomer broke the sound barrier at the Cubi Point Officers Club in the late ‘60s, and while doing so he broke a huge plate glass window and many light bulbs throughout the base. “Hence the call sign ‘Boomer’ was born. Luckily he never was blamed for the incident!” Tere explained that her husband shied away from the attention he received from his notable career, but the family could not be more proud of the man they loved dearly and miss every single day. “Our family is truly humbled, honored and extremely proud of Boomer, his accomplishments as a Navy officer and a loving father, husband and friend. He was one in a million,” said Tere. During the last 14 years of his life, Boomer and Tere called Hope, Idaho, home for much of the year. “We fell in love with Sandpoint and Hope after researching the area for a retirement home,” said Tere. “The multi-seasonal recreation and the unpretentiousness of the community drew us here as well.” Wilson was very active in the community, specifically at the Bird Aviation Museum, where he enthusiastically served as a volunteer.
SandpointLivingLocal.com
“When Drs. Pam and Forrest Bird opened the museum, Boomer started the docent program for them,” said Tere. “His favorite part of serving as a docent was giving tours to the young students who came through the museum.” With all of his accomplishments, awards and honors, Kim said that for her and the family what means the most is the type of man her father was. “So many people looked up to him because of his career, but that’s nothing compared to the person he was—a loving and dedicated father, grandfather and husband,” she said. “His was a life cut too short.” The next time you go to a movie centered on a Navy SEAL mission, marine rescue operation or historical battle, remember that while as entertaining as these are, most are the stories of those who actually lived through them. Some made it out, others did not, but all should be remembered. Unless you’ve lived within a military family, the situation is difficult to understand, but honoring the service and sacrifice these families make for our country is paramount. “Top Gun; Maverick” is sure to be entertaining and bring in plenty of cash, but let’s not forget that its original inspiration came decades ago from brave patriots like Boomer Wilson. The movie is scheduled for release in June of 2020.

“I love the competition that volleyball brings out in people. There is no physical interaction with the opponent, forcing a single team to work together in order to terminate a point,” said Marina, who, at 6’1”, is the setter on the SHS varsity team. “My whole team is very competitive, and it is incredible to watch us work as a whole unit and score as a team.” Over the years, Marina has played basketball, lacrosse and soccer and was also a dancer. But it is volleyball that she hopes to continue in the collegiate arena. “I plan to go to either Boise State University or the University of Montana,” said Marina. “I am interested in pursuing a career in early childhood education.”

losing streak, something she experienced last year. “Last year we had this problem but overcame it by practicing harder than we had before and working as hard as we could. Although this didn’t result in us going to state, it prepared us mentally and physically for an almost undefeated season this year.” There is no doubt that as Marina goes forward in her volleyball career, she will be successful in athletics and life. “One life lesson I have learned from volleyball is there is always more to give. You can be fully spent, lying on the ground, but you still manage to get back up and keep pushing,” she said. “As a senior, seeing my teammates—and especially myself—struggle working through daily workouts on the beach and on the court was excruciating, but we know that we, as a team, are better for it, and we are prepared to do whatever it takes to become champions.”

sophomore at Sandpoint High School, Tag Benefield has played sports most of his life.
“I have been playing tackle football since third grade, wresting since seventh and playing lacrosse since fourth grade,” said Tag, who adds that he enjoys weightlifting, sleeping, eating and hanging out with his friends.
“Tag has done a great job stepping into the heart of our defense,” said Coach Knowles. “He invites contact and has a nose for the ball. He has a lot of good football in front of him!” Being involved in sports has taught Tag important values that have led to him being so successful. He said it all boils down to two simple things—discipline and teamwork.
Although he has a couple of years yet to decide on his post-high school education plans, Tag said he would like to play sports in college and hopes that he can get a scholarship to do so. While there are many challenges that come along with being an athlete, Tag said his most difficult challenge thus far in his athletic career has been making weight for wrestling and trying to maintain it. “I overcame that by having a good work ethic and staying on a strict routine,” said Tag. This year, Tag is on the varsity football team. He shares that what he enjoys most about the sport is the competition and the physical aspect. Head coach Ryan Knowles has been impressed by the young athlete’s efforts this season.

FALLING IN LOVE WITH NATURE CAMP KANIKSU ALLOWS CHILDREN TO CONNECT WITH AND EXPLORE THE BEAUTY OF THE OUTDOORS

S
ome of the best childhood memories are of days spent outdoors with friends. For many who were fortunate enough to go to summer camp, those experiences were ones we will likely never forget.
For children in Sandpoint, there are many opportunities to experience great adventure, and one of those opportunities just got even better. Camp Kaniksu, which is operated by Kaniksu Land Trust, began its summer outdoor camp program in 2017. This upcoming summer, the camp will move from the previous location at the University of Idaho property on Boyer Avenue to the soon-to-be-acquired Pine Street Woods property. “We’re very excited to be able to move camp to Pine Street Woods next summer. One of the many things which our campers do is choose a ‘special place’ during camp, which they are encouraged to re-visit with their family outside of camp,” said Cami Murray, programs and development associate for Kaniksu Land Trust. “The permanence of Pine Street Woods will take this idea to new levels. We hope that one day our

campers will bring their own children, or grandchildren, to their ‘special place.’ Additionally, because Kaniksu Land Trust will own this property, we will have more leeway to allow campers to do projects and work on substantial and diverse natural areas that are removed from distractions like train whistles and traffic.” Camp is open to children ages 7 through 12. “We do split weeks by age group, offering weeks for 7 through 9 and 10 through 12,” said Cami. “This allows all of the kids to have a more tailored experience.” The camp is offered in one-week sessions, and in 2019 each child will be permitted to enroll in one week-long session. The camp is Monday through Friday from 9am to 3pm.

Ca mp memories are the best memories!
This past summer the camp had approximately 100 children attend, up from 60 attendees in its first year. In order to ensure a high-quality experience for each camper, Camp Kaniksu limits the number of children to 25 per session. In 2019 they are planning to hold six sessions of camp, which could allow for up to 150 children to participate in Camp Kaniksu. “We do recommend signing up early as camp fills up fast,” advised Cami.
number of ‘junior counselor’ opportunities for stand-out campers from previous years who are now too old to attend camp,” said Cami.
The camp experience is diverse, with each day’s activities guided in part by the weather and the mood of the campers, as well as the time of year and what resources are available.
“For us, this has meant that we work to not only preserve land but also to engage with our community on the land and provide opportunities for them to get outside. In particular, we recognized that for many children in our community getting time outside can be difficult, especially for those with working parents,” explained Cami. “We know that time in the outdoors has a measurable effect on developing brains and that kids need nature for proper growth and development—be it physical, social, cognitive or emotional.”
“On any given day, kids might be learning about tracking, preparing wild food, playing games, building forts, learning ‘survival skills’ such as how to make bow-drill fires or locate water sources, making crafts or just being given free time to explore,” explained Cami. Camp Kaniksu is run by Dave Kretzschmar, Kaniksu Land Trust’s outdoor education specialist who has a remarkable background in natureconnection education, a master’s degree in environmental education and years of experience engaging youth in the outdoors. “He is assisted by several amazing counselors, all of whom also have backgrounds in education and nature-connection. While Camp Kaniksu is relatively new, Kaniksu Land Trust has stood at the forefront of the community conservation movement for the last several years.
Kaniksu Land Trust’s goal through the camp is to provide a safe and affordable way for children to spend time outdoors during the summer and to create a lifelong connection to nature. Kaniksu Land Trust is able to offer both full and half scholarships to anyone who requests one, no questions asked, to ensure that all children are able to have access to this amazing opportunity.

There is also an opportunity for anyone in the community to sponsor a child for camp. With an $80 donation, one can cover the cost of one child to attend camp. And as we enter into the holiday season, it can also be a wonderful Christmas gift for a child in your life or to sponsor a child in someone’s name; perhaps a gift for the grandparent who has all they need but would find joy in knowing they are helping a child. The gift of memories is something that lasts a lifetime. The words the children write in their nature journals reflect what an amazing experience it is for each one of them. One 7-year-old camper wrote: “Camp Kaniksu was so much fun, I can’t wait to go again next summer. The things I liked most about the camp is exploring, seeing animals like deer and meeting friends. Dave taught me to make a floor mat
and headband out of bamboo and that you can eat cat tails.” Another wrote, “In my secret spot, a bird landed right next to me.” The parents also have expressed their gratitude to Camp Kaniksu for providing such an amazing experience for their children. One parent wrote, “By far the best wilderness camp of the season. Great blessing to have the land, resource and personnel to run a camp with such greatness. Our children have expressed the joys of learning and the want/need to continue to learn.” Camp leader Dave Kretzschmar and his staff also receive great fulfillment by providing this unique opportunity to young children.

“I had a shy girl show up to camp last summer who took a couple hours each day to warm up and get engaged. She always did by the middle of the day, but she was never very vocal about whether she was enjoying herself. I saw her last week and she couldn't stop talking about how much fun camp was and how she is definitely coming next summer,” shared Dave. The holidays are a time of giving to not only our friends and family but also to those less fortunate. If you would like to donate to Camp Kaniksu and help to sponsor a child for camp, stop by their office at 1215 Michigan, Suite A in Sandpoint, or you can contact them at 208.263.9471 or by email at info@kaniksu.org. Local Artist Creates Beauty from Pain
Capasso brings life to his paintings BY COLIN ANDERSON

HAVING EXPERIENCED MANY WAR AND CONFLICT ZONES, NOT ALL IMAGES OF HIS TRAVELS WERE OF BEAUTY AND LIGHT. PAINTING, HOWEVER, HELPED PROVIDE AN OUTLET TO SOME OF THE DIFFICULT IMAGES THAT WILL ALWAYS STICK WITH HIM.
A
rtists are influenced and find inspiration in many forms. For Jeff ‘Capasso’ Williams, a life spent traveling the world is the primary factor when he touches brush to canvas. Capasso left his small Illinois town and joined the U.S. Navy at just 17. For 24 years he traveled the globe experiencing different military bases, cultures and conflicts. “I was all over the Middle East, Iraq, Afghanistan, Africa—specifically Rwanda, a lot of Asia, the Philippines, Thailand,” recalls Capasso. His experience as a naval aircrewman and sensor operator onboard the P-3C Orion aircraft allowed him a view of the world not many get to see. Capasso always loved drawing and sketching even as a young child and joined the Navy because he didn’t think he could carve out a living for himself on painting alone. His travels allowed him vantage points of dense forests and barren deserts, metropolises and quaint villages, all evident in his decades of work. His time in Italy during the Kosovo conflict was especially influential to the lifelong painter. “In what little time off I had, I went to some remote fishing villages and fell in love with them,” he says.

“I always had the gift, but this helped tremendously about the craft side of things, learning techniques, color patterns, things you really need from a university to help you along the way.” Capasso toured the country studying the incredible works of art Italy is known for. Having experienced many war and conflict zones, not all images of his travels were of beauty and light. Painting, however, helped provide an outlet to some of the difficult images that will always stick with him. “It was somewhat therapeutic in a way, and a way to exercise some demons,” he says. Capasso was stationed in Hawaii on several occasions and was continually inspired by the natural beauty of the islands. Here he met his wife Leilani and the couple raised five children together. When it was time to finally retire after 24 years, the naval vet, with a master’s degree in aeronautical science, took a two-year sabbatical to focus on his craft; enrolling in the Fine Arts Program at the University of Hawaii. “I always had the gift, but this helped tremendously about the craft side of things, learning techniques, color patterns, things you really need from a university to help you along the way.” While many would consider retirement to Hawaii the ultimate dream, it’s North Idaho in which the Williams have found their personal paradise.

Capasso was stationed alongside a man from Western Montana and another from near Bonners Ferry. “They would go on and on about how beautiful it was and I was like, ‘Really? Idaho? Isn’t that like Iowa?” he laughs. With Leilani at his side, they decided to take a trip to see Coeur d’Alene and were blown away. When they went further north to Sandpoint, they agreed, this was the place to finally call home. While Capasso has painted his fair share of landscapes, he is also inspired by more intimate surroundings in the area. Driving near Clark Fork, he came across a gathering of old non-running trucks. His initial impression eventually led to an entire series of paintings. “It reminded me about our lives, we start out shiny and new and over the years get kicked in the teeth and have the windows cracked, but even at the end there is a beautiful patina,” he says. Capasso’s next series will focus on small towns, like Sandpoint and Coeur d’Alene, and how so few are left across the country. You can find his works at the Artwork Gallery, and there is a display of his larger pieces at the Cedar Street Bridge Public Market.

By Kenny Markwardt, CSCS, Owner, CrossFit Sandpoint STEELHEAD ARE RAINBOW TROUT THAT ARE BORN IN A RIVER, migrate out to the ocean from thousands of miles away, swim back up the same river, then back out to the ocean and return. They continue this process until they die from the exhaustion of spawning, are killed or caught.
Our first year trying to catch one, we scoured the Internet, read books, asked professionals and picked everyone’s brain we could. After three full days of casting out on the water, we went home empty handed. The second year, we did the same thing, thinking that the previous year’s experience would help us. If nothing else, we figured we’d paid our dues and would at least luck into a few. Nope.
Catching a steelhead can feel nearly impossible. They call them the fish of a thousand casts. They're not dumb. They can be found in thousands of miles of a river system and happen to run up these river systems during the coldest parts of winter. Thousands of fishermen try and catch them annually to no avail. Even the most seasoned angler will spend weeks on end trying to touch just one of them.
Over these first two seasons, we read stories of success, saw countless pictures on social media and went to seminars from people who proclaimed they had all the answers. Obviously it was possible. One day we realized that most of the pictures we were seeing and the stories we were hearing were from people who were fishing with professional guides. These guides usually run $250 to $300 a day, per person. Not a small amount
I am one of those anglers. With a handful of friends, who are just as impassioned and dedicated as I am, I head south every winter to try and catch one.

www.SandpointWest.com 1905 Pine Street | 263-6633 Environmentally Friendly Products of money, according to our standards. We are an intelligent, hard-working group of guys who seem to find success through diligence and persistence. We shouldn’t have to pay someone to show us how to do things. Right? Then we came to our senses and realized how many hours, how many dollars in gas, bait, gear and lures, and how much mental energy had been spent to try and figure it out on our own. It was a depressing set of numbers. We realized we’d end up saving money, saving energy and being confident knowing that we were on the right path. We’d be able to ask all the questions we could think of and learn the ins and outs so if we did decide to go back out on our own, we’d be well prepared to do so. So we decided we’d do it. We’d shell out the money and jump on a boat with a pro. Sure enough, within a few hours of hiring a professional to help, I was shaking fins with the wild creature that had eluded me so many years before. We were elated. We even caught a handful more. What’s more is that we learned a ton and realized what we had done wrong in the past and what
we needed to do in the future. That experience was worth every dime (and more) that we paid. So what in the world does this have to do with fitness or nutrition? I watch people do this all the time when it comes to their health. They scour the Internet, read magazines, take advice from friends on social media and try all the latest fads in order to get what they seek. Yet, it often goes poorly and they end up starting that cycle all over again. In the end, all they’re doing is teaching themselves how to fail. They do this for years. They balk at the idea of hiring a coach because it’s too expensive. Yet they’ve never pondered the value of their time, their confidence in a plan or their feelings of exuberance when led by a professional with a proven track record down their path to success. Just as we learned with our fishing adventures, the value of an experienced guide who has been there, done that and seen it all is unparalleled, especially when you finally grasp that success in your own two hands.

COLD WEATHER SKINCARE Nurturing your skin during the chilly months BY BRI WILLIAMS, RN, BSN. REFINED AESTHETICS MED SPA PLLC
W
e hate to say it, but the days are getting shorter and winter is fast approaching. While living in a Winter Wonderland has endless benefits (we are surrounded by an abundance of natural beauty, and there is no shortage of fun outdoor activities), the drop in temperature means cold, dry air with lower humidity levels outdoors, and heat sources indoors, all of which leave our skin dry, itchy and parched. Now is a great time to develop a routine that will leave your skin hydrated and glowing from now until the first blooms of spring. The first step to healthy skin is a healthy diet, and winter is an important time of the year to increase your intake of healthy fats. Foods rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids (walnuts, salmon, avocado and olive oil to name a few) help to restore moisture to dry skin and protect against free-radical damage and oxidation. It is also important to increase your water intake. Drinking half your bodyweight in ounces daily, as well as decreasing alcohol and caffeine consumption, will ensure you are well hydrated from the inside out. While enjoying the great outdoors, make sure to protect your skin with clothing and sunscreen. Yes, sunscreen. Even in the dead of winter our skin is vulnerable to the harsh UV rays of the sun, even more so at higher elevations where there is less atmosphere to filter the harmful UV rays, and around snow due to the reflection of the sun’s rays. It is recommended to use a sunscreen with either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for the best protection and reapply every two to three hours.

While a long hot shower is what we crave, limiting your time in a warm (not hot) shower will help to maintain the natural oils on your skin. Your skincare routine should include a gentle exfoliating scrub that contains a mild glycolic or lactic acid, or a wet washcloth, to remove dead skin cells two to three times a week. This will allow your moisturizer to be more easily absorbed. While looking for a body moisturizer, choose a product that contains lanolin or ceramides to help your skin hold on to moisture. A great ingredient to hydrate your face without clogging your pores is hyaluronic acid and, as a bonus, will help to plump the skin for a more youthful appearance. Oils, such as squalene and lapis, are also great choices for hydrating your face. Dry skin doesn’t have to be something you suffer with throughout the fall and winter season. A healthy diet, protecting your skin and nurturing it with the correct skincare products will keep your skin healthy and glowing all year long. Make dry and itchy skin a thing of the past.

The ABCs of COPD AND TIPS ON HOW TO LIVE WITH THE DISEASE ARTICLE PROVIDED BY BONNER GENERAL HEALTH
C
OPD Awareness month is among us, so here is some information about the disease including the two types of COPD, how it is diagnosed, treatments that are available and support that is available to those with COPD and their family and caregivers.
have emphysema or chronic bronchitis, and whether or not it is helped by using a medication called a “bronchodilator.” Bonner General Health has experienced respiratory therapists who perform these tests in their lab on a daily basis.
COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) consists of either emphysema or chronic bronchitis and affects more than 3 million people in the U.S. each year. It is chronic because it lasts for years or is life long. It requires a medical diagnosis, with lab tests and/or diagnostic imaging often ordered, and treatment options are available (but there is not a cure).
Once diagnosed, your physician has a variety of treatment options to offer to help alleviate the symptoms. Small volume nebulizers (SVNs) or metered dose inhalers (MDIs) are available that deliver medications that dilate the bronchial tubes (bronchodilators) and relieve airway inflammation (corticosteroids). Your physician or health-care provider can help you decide what options would work best for you. Sometimes supplemental oxygen is needed, to be determined by your physician, and can be obtained by one of our local home care companies.
Emphysema involves the destruction and enlargement of air spaces in the lungs, and it is usually caused from smoking and/or inhaling environmental pollutants over many years. Those with emphysema are often short of breath, may or may not cough up mucus throughout the day and have trouble with activities that require much effort. The damage done to the lungs makes it hard for the oxygen that one breathes in to get into the blood, and the waste product of the body’s cells, carbon dioxide, to get out of the blood to be breathed out. This often results in shortness of breath.
Bonner General Health has teamed up with the American Lung Association to provide a support service for those diagnosed with COPD (as well as asthma, lung cancer, pulmonary fibrosis and cystic fibrosis). It is called the Better Breather’s Club and meets at BGH on the second Thursday of every month from 1 to 2:30pm. The purpose of the club is to help ones who suffer from chronic lung disease to improve the quality of their lives. There is no cost to the members, and their caregivers/family members are welcome to join them. Information is provided to the members such as how to conserve energy when performing activities of daily living, how to obtain medical supplies, how to navigate insurance companies, how to use an inhaler and how to improve your quality of life with lung disease through nutrition. A different subject is covered by an expert in that field each month. Contact the BBC facilitator by calling 208.265.1043 for more information.
Chronic bronchitis involves large amounts of daily mucous production and inflammation of the airways. There are four stages of COPD according to the American Lung Association’s “GOLD” standard. Each stage is more progressive, but knowing which stage the patient is in makes it easier for the physician to follow the optimal treatment pathway. Both forms of COPD can be diagnosed by your physician, who may order a pulmonary function test to be performed. This test will determine if you

GOT STRESS? How you respond is key to overcoming it THIS IS PART ONE OF A TWO-PART SERIES BY RYAN EGAN, LICENSED JOINT AND MOVEMENT SPECIALIST AND OWNER OF MVMNT GYM, SANDPOINT
S
tress. The word alone creates a negative response that cascades through our mind, body and spirit, usually conjuring up whatever current or recent unfavorable experiences we have endured or are enduring. It is difficult to stay composed when the discomfort of stress and your inability to be your best self are put to the test. Truthfully, the only way to grow is to acknowledge that life can hurt, and some experiences are frustrating, but moving forward in spite of the sting can lead to priceless life lessons. While a lot of stress in our lives cannot be controlled, we can control our response. Life is 10 percent of our circumstances and 90 percent of how we respond to them. The kinds of stress we are experiencing are so advanced and moving so fast, I think our ability to respond well is diminished by the sheer pace and enormity of mounting stressors in our lives, as well as the magnitude of our expectations of what we can manage well and the deep desires in our hearts that become buried by the complex daily navigation of unsurmountable “have tos”. According to the American Institute of Stress, stress and the prevailing ailments cost Americans $300 billion every year. That’s $100 billion more than obesity and its related ailments. Death isn’t killing us, stress is. I’m not entirely convinced that stress itself is the central issue. I believe the problem is our stressful response, psychologically and chemically, to the stress we experience. Our stressful response to stress is what ignites fear, which force feeds stress to itself,
WHILE A LOT OF STRESS IN OUR LIVES CANNOT BE CONTROLLED, WE CAN CONTROL OUR RESPONSE. LIFE IS 10 PERCENT OF OUR CIRCUMSTANCES AND 90 PERCENT OF HOW WE RESPOND TO THEM.

engulfing us in increased stress levels due to increased stress. I also believe learning to utilize stress to acquire a plethora of adaptations is a skill—a skill we have yet to harness and utilize well as humans. Truth be told, I think we have taught ourselves to believe that stress is bad and have programmed our psychosomatic responses accordingly. Even worse, I think we are addicted to stress, like some kind of masochistic dopamine rush. An example of addictions to negative stress and pain is what Eckhart Tolle coined “the pain body” in his book, “A New Earth.” My job relies on utilizing stress in a very specific way to elicit favorable adaptations that result in less pain and sexier abs. The dark side to using stress to make people stronger is that poorly chosen stressors, or poorly moderated stress amounts, can actually hurt and injure people. In fact, 50 percent of people doing any exercise from 2011-2014 injured themselves, according to CDC stats, so even good stress ends up being bad stress. Maybe stress is just a mixture of bad judgement, poor responses, unmanaged expectations and addiction, mixed with bad training and excessive overreaction. And if that’s the case, maybe with a little more selfreflection we can keep from pouring salt in our own wounds and learn the wisdom of strategically enjoying being uncomfortable and learn the skill of staying calm while stressed, while using stress in a more intelligent manner. Next month we will explore various ways to overcome and deal with stress.

Does Drinking Water
During Exercise
Make Sense?
E
ver take your water bottle to the gym or on a hike with you? We all hear the advice to drink plenty of water while we are exercising, but I’ve been wondering how long it takes to absorb that sip.
Food needs to get chewed up and broken down in order to get into our body. But this isn’t the same for water. Water molecules are small enough they can move through cell membranes without modification. Where water gets absorbed in our digestive system affects how quickly we can access it. Once we chew food it goes into the stomach, then into the small intestines and lastly through the large intestine or colon. Water follows the same path, but our body also puts fluid into the digestive tract from the salivary glands, stomach, pancreas and liver.
HOW TO MAXIMIZE THE BENEFIT OF HYDRATION
There is some thought that water starts to get absorbed as soon as you drink it. The amount, though, would be pretty small. This is because the primary absorption happens in the small intestine, and to get there water has to pass through your stomach.
BY SCOTT PORTER, CENTER FOR FUNCTIONAL NUTRITION
Things can sit in your stomach for a while. Everyone is different in how long that is, but food can take hours to exit. Most nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine while the large intestine’s responsibility is to absorb water. But this does not mean that the small intestine does not absorb water—it actually does. What happens in the colon is that the excess water not previously absorbed is removed to solidify waste. About 80 percent of the water we consume in food and drink absorbs while in the small intestine. This process is affected by the presence of sodium, which the body secretes to cause an imbalance that forces water into our cells. This, and other electrolytes, can increase permeability for greater absorption. While the bulk of water is absorbed through cells, some will pass between the cells that form tight junctions. Magnesium also plays a big role, and that is why we get diarrhea if we take too much. The body forces water the other way, back into our intestines, in order to try to balance things out. A recent study I was reading shows that water can start showing up in the bloodstream within five minutes while half was absorbed by around 12 minutes. The bulk of the water was completely absorbed within two hours. This means drinking water during a workout would make sense. We’d actually get to use some of it while we are still exercising. But it is far better to drink most of it a couple hours before so we don’t get dehydrated. Combining electrolytes with B vitamins, vitamin C, and D-ribose helps replenish nutrients and stimulate energy recovery. By the way, if you feel the need to pee right after you drink something, this would not be the same water you just drank. It can take up to 50 days for a complete turnover of all the water in your body. FEATURE STORY
Painful Memories Time does not heal wounds to the soul BY DAN AZNOFF
F
ifty years ago, I was an acne-faced teenager desperately trying to cling to the tail of the political unrest that had swept our nation.
While most of my junior high classmates spent their afterschool hours on ball fields, my days were filled with creating memorable catch phrases that could be painted on poster boards that I prepared for the next rally against social injustice or the bloody war in Vietnam. My lunch hours were filled with gatherings of like-minded young people who would take turns standing on tables outside the cafeteria delivering passionate speeches on the inequalities in our society. For a would-be student radical, the 1968 presidential elections were better than the World Series. The local elections in my community in Southern California provided my first opportunity to put words into action. My pockets were stuffed with leaflets as well as potholders and other promotional materials distributed by the various candidates. Election Day was spent standing on the median of a local highway waving a sign to encourage motorists to vote for my preferred candidate for state assembly. When the polls closed, volunteers gathered at the campaign office around the corner from my home to wait for the early returns. My passion was fueled in large part by the candidacy of Bobby Kennedy, who was engaged in a tight race for the Democratic presidential nomination against Sen. Eugene McCarthy. The contest for delegates had tightened the week earlier when the lawmaker from Minnesota had bested Kennedy in the Oregon primary. Kennedy was perceived by many as the only candidate who could unite the party (and the country) during a tempestuous time of unrest. Both senators had taken a strong stance against the war in the uphill contest against Vice President Hubert Humphrey. The VP had assumed the role of presumptive Democratic nominee when President Lyndon Johnson unexpectedly withdrew from the race at the end of March after

he had been upstaged by McCarthy in the New Hampshire primary. The crowd at the assemblyman’s campaign office was jubilant with the early returns that indicated their efforts had resulted in victory for their candidate. Many of those in the crowded office wanted to move the celebration from the suburban campaign headquarters to Downtown Los Angeles to join the festivities at the Kennedy campaign headquarters. The prospect of being a part of the Kennedy victory celebration at the Ambassador Hotel inspired me to deceive my parents about where I would be and to stay out past my curfew. We stuffed ourselves into a half-dozen cars for the short ride downtown. The throngs of people in the Embassy Ballroom at The Ambassador grew more enthusiastic as Kennedy’s lead in early returns indicated a much-needed victory en route to the nominating convention in Chicago. As an observer of history, I found myself positioned near a side door as victory grew near. My emotions were a mix of excitement coupled with guilt for being so far from home on a school night and for deceiving my parents. Just after midnight, almost without warning, I was shoved out of my safe haven near a side door by a surge of photographers and reporters.

FEATURE STORY A few steps behind the media were members of Kennedy’s staff, looking confident and mildly disheveled. Bobby walked into the room behind them, surrounded by an elite combination of celebrities and famous athletes. The candidate was wearing a freshly pressed suit over a crisp white shirt. He stopped to shake hands with as many people as he could reach through the barrier of humanity that had engulfed him. He stopped in front of me. With a sweep of one hand, he brushed the hair away from his face long enough to lean down and look straight into my eyes. I uttered some innocuous comment before Bobby asked me my name. “Danny, sir.” The noise was deafening, but I could hear the sincerity in his reply. “Well Danny, I hope I can count on your vote in November.” I did not want to tell him that I was still eight years away from being 21 and legally able to vote. In an instant, he was gone, headed toward the podium where he would claim victory in the winner-take-all California primary. He held up his fingers to symbolize V for victory and pledged to win the nomination at the convention in Chicago. The infamous gunshots from the kitchen a few moments later were as clear as if they had been fired in an empty room. A tight corridor
Robert Kennedy’s assassination on June 5, 1968, in a Los Angeles hotel came just months after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and less than five years after the assassination of Robert’s brother, President John F. Kennedy. Although he died the day after his shooting at the young age of 42, the young politician spent nearly half of his life in public service making a significant impact on American politics. • Robert Kennedy was the chief counsel of the Senate Labor Rackets Committee from 1957 to 1959 where he challenged Teamsters President Jimmy Hoffa over the corrupt practices of the union. • Robert Kennedy served as the 64th United States attorney general from January of 1961 to September of 1964, serving under his brother, John F. Kennedy, until the president’s assassination in November of 1963. Bobby stayed on as attorney general until he resigned 10 months following President Kennedy’s death. • Following his brother’s death, Robert Kennedy was elected senator of New York, where he continued his mission to advocate for the poor and for human rights. He was known for his opposition to racial discrimination and the escalation of the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War. • According to the Washington Post, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who lost his father when he was 14 years old, visited with Sirhan B. Sirhan, the man convicted of killing his father, earlier this year at a correctional facility in California. After his visit, Robert Kennedy, Jr. said he believes there was a second gunman and that it was not Sirhan who killed his father.

opened in the sea of bodies that gave me a glimpse of Rosey Grier as he struggled to pry the gun away from the shooter. The gunman continued to pull the trigger after he had fired all six rounds from his .22 caliber handgun. The rest of the evening was a blur of sirens and news cameras. We made the 20-minute drive home in silence. My mind was filled with the horrific images I had witnessed, but I went to bed that night without admitting to my parents where I had been. I avoided any conversation with classmates until the next afternoon when our teachers informed us that Kennedy had died from his wounds.
I cried more that night than when my mother died eight years later. The man who had the ability to lead the nation out of the desperate times that began five years earlier when President Kennedy was gunned down in Dallas was gone. The future looked bleak without a man to lead us out of the darkness. Bobby was shot by Sirhan Sirhan, a Palestinian who believed killing the next president would prevent the sale of American jets to Israel. The site of the violence has changed dramatically over the last 50 years. The Ambassador Hotel fell into disrepair and has been replaced by a community of public schools named to honor the fallen senator dedicated to the ideals he championed.

The nation has not. The ideals of social justice Kennedy symbolized a half-century ago continue to be out of reach for a nation in search of its soul. That night changed my life forever. Being a witness to history inspired me to become a journalist who could provide objective information on the people responsible for the changes in our society. Bobby has been a part of my life every day for the past 50 years. I continue to be inspired by the ideals he advocated and mourn for the loss of where we could be as a nation if he had lived to fulfill his vision of equality.

Make a Local Impact All Year Shopping locally has domino effect in the community BY PATTY HUTCHENS

t is the time of year when we start making our lists. What gift should we purchase for those special people in our lives this holiday season? After all, we want something that will be different from the rest; something that truly reflects the love we have for someone. This year, while making those lists, think about how you can also influence your local economy. And then consider making it a habit not just during the holiday season but year round. There are a few campaigns that have already been encouraging people to do so, and this is the story behind an impact of two of those. The 3/50 Project One such way to boost the local economy is by taking part in the 3/50 Project whose mission is “saving the brick and mortars the nation is built upon.” The concept of the 3/50 Project is simple: Pick three. Spend 50. Save your local economy. Organizers encourage people to choose three independently owned businesses that they know they would miss if they would suddenly close down. Commit to spending $50 each month at one of these stores, whether it is a local health food store, gift shop,
restaurant, salon or clothing store, and locals will be doing their part to make a significant impact on their local economy. According to those behind the 3/50 Project, for every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the local community through taxes, payroll and other expenditures. On the contrary, if you spend your money at a “big box” store, only $43 stays local. And for online spending, well, it’s a big zero. Minneapolis resident Cindy Baxter is the driving force behind the 3/50 project. She is the former owner of a successful retail store and is now a retail consultant and professional speaker with a mission to strengthen independent brick-and-mortar businesses. Baxter shares that she feels an obligation to pay forward the knowledge and expertise she has gained throughout the years. With a simple blog post back in 2009, following a week of news reports focusing on how consumer spending drives the economy, Baxter’s post suggesting the principles behind the 3/50 project propelled people into action. Only a week later, she was handing out free flyers to businesses, and by the end of that month she had launched her website, The350Project.net. Today, businesses can register and receive free marketing tools from the 3/50 Project at no cost. If you are a local business owner,

“
It was not too long ago when our economy was struggling and in the midst of a recession. For small businesses, that struggle was especially difficult. American Express sought to find a way they could help support those locally owned businesses that do so much to keep the local economy strong, funneling the money spent back into the communities they serve. It was in 2010 when American Express launched Small Business Saturday. On one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year, the Saturday after Thanksgiving, American Express’s campaign was aimed at bringing more holiday shopping to small businesses around the country. It was only one year later when the Senate unanimously passed a resolution supporting Small Business Saturday, and by 2012, all 50 states were participating. Now, eight years later, the campaign is going strong as more and more businesses are taking part in the quest, displaying Small Business Saturday signs in their windows and bringing people in who may not normally shop there. A report commissioned by American Express and the National Federation of Independent Businesses reports that in 2017 an estimated 108 million

As the holiday season approaches, think small, think local and feel good about the fact your shopping experience is helping your hometown. consumers shopped or dined at local independently owned businesses on Small Business Saturday. That number translates into approximately 43 percent of all Americans. And while we often think of Small Business Saturday and shopping local as being benefits to the business owner, the benefits to consumers are also significant. When one chooses to shop in his or her locally owned stores, they are not only saving themselves time by not traveling to other destinations, but they likely are also saving money. Traveling out of town for one’s shopping needs requires the cost of gas, time away from home or work and, depending upon where you go, could also mean a higher sales tax. If you are an Internet shopper, you may save time but not always money. After all, those shipping costs can quickly add up. And you may not realize it but making a conscious effort to shop locally as much as possible is also a benefit to friends and neighbors. Small business owners are known for their contributions to the many nonprofit agencies that in turn help our community members. In fact, statistics show those locally owned and operated stores are two-anda-half times more likely to donate to nonprofit agencies than the large chain stores.
SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY SandpointLivingLocal.com
Small business owners are the ones who take the money they earn and reinvest it into their community with their own purchases of goods and services. Can the same be said for the big box stores? By shopping at locally owned stores you are not only helping to stimulate the local economy, but you may likely be helping other people in the community who rely upon several of our nonprofits during the down times in their lives. As the holiday season approaches, think small, think local and feel good about the fact your shopping experience is helping your hometown. And while you are at it, maybe make a New Year’s resolution to continue the practice all year long.

CONQUERING ONLINE How you can become successful BY COLIN ANDERSON
I
n today’s world, anything you need can be sent to you without ever leaving your couch. A myriad of online shopping options are out there from behemoths like Amazon and Ebay to specialty sites for very specific products. In many cities, the weekly grocery trip has changed completely. Shoppers can purchase everything from their phone or computer and it will be ready to pick up when they arrive at the store. In some cases groceries are even delivered. Removing the brick and mortar from a business can save thousands in associated costs, and those who want to turn their hobby into part- or full-time income have places to push their goods as well. Like in any market, the competition is fierce amongst online retailers big and small, and getting your products to the front of search results is no simple task. There are, however, several sites and techniques for those who are looking to make a small splash in this multi-billion dollar industry. Social Media Marketing Setting up a business-specific set of social media pages is vital to any business looking for maximum reach. Channels like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter are all free to set up, and for many consumers these are the platforms in which they are influenced on fashion trends, news and upcoming events.

With these platforms you can post stories or content about your product, show photos of the piece from concept to finished product, and interact with current or potential customers. A jewelry designer might wish to hold a Twitter chat or livestream so followers can watch an item being made and speak directly to the artisan who is making it. Facebook allows you to open your own ‘Shop’ directly on its platform so followers can purchase your item while on the popular social media site. Placing ads on Facebook is also very affordable, and with its enormous database of users, you control who your message gets to. If your target is 30- to 40-year-old married women without kids and within 30 miles of your location, you can set the filters and choose how much you want to spend. Easy to read charts show you how many impressions your ad received and allow you to easily calculate your cost per lead or cost per sale. High-Quality Images
Channels like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter are all free to set up, and for many consumers these are the platforms in which they are influenced on fashion trends, news and upcoming events.
While phones have come a long way, simply snapping a quick pic of your product and putting it online isn’t always the best method. Hiring a professional to shoot multiple views and angles will ensure better quality images in your online store. Professionals know proper lighting and the ins and outs of photo-editing software such as Photoshop. Consumers are becoming more and more visual, and the better your images the better response you will receive. If your startup doesn’t have the capital for a professional, there are some budget solutions as well. If your items are small like handmade crafts or jewelry, table-top sized photo studios are available. In many cases these bright white squares are already lit, but in some, the lighting is placed outside of the device. Larger sizes are available for those looking to model clothes or furniture. Price and quality vary greatly from basic models around $50 to larger higher-end studios reaching into the thousands.

Know the Charges If you go with a well-established online marketplace like Etsy or Houzz, make sure you are aware of the costs to list your items and the commission that is paid when your item does sell. For example, Etsy charges 20 cents for each listing. When the item sells, the company takes a 5-percent commission and also charges a 3-percent payment processing fee to complete the order. Knowing what it costs to make a sale will help you price your items correctly. There are smaller sites that charge smaller fees and commissions but you are unlikely to receive the support, fraud protections, and shipping options that the larger platforms offer. Be Creative and Mix it Up When you choose the platform that you feel is right for your product, do all that you can to learn everything about the site. These companies also make money off your product, so it is their goal for you to succeed. Each offers stories of users’ success and failures and provide step-by-step instructions on creating the right attentiongrabbing listings. Many have built-in communities which allow you to chat and brainstorm with other users or speak with company employees about issues you are having. If your items aren’t selling, don’t be afraid to mix things up. When listing an item; think about what descriptions and categories you want to utilize. There are a lot of ‘vintage chairs’ for sale, so look at narrowing down the search parameters. It can be tricky, but don’t be afraid to continually tweak your listings until you find the best results and response. Ecommerce is only continuing to grow, and whether you’re looking to have your product take over the globe or just sell a few pieces each year, there is a platform that will get your item exposure to those looking to buy it. Like any other business, have a plan, budget and goals when starting your online business—and be the boss!

Shopping on a budget TIPS AND TRICKS TO SAVING OVER THE HOLIDAYS BY JILLIAN CHANDLER
Set a budget. Before you leave the house for an afternoon of spirited holiday shopping, you must first set a firm budget—and stick to it! This is a time of year that should be joyful. Why ruin that feeling by ending the year with unnecessary debt? Figure out what you can reasonably afford and go from there. Allot an amount to each person you’ll be shopping for (your budget will help determine how many you are able to include on your personal “nice list”) and … you’re off!
A LIST IS A MUST. There’s no greater joy than seeing the smiles on your loved ones’ faces Christmas morning, but note, it is not imperative to shop for every family member or friend. Before you get a start on your holiday shopping, and taking into consideration your budget, make a list of family and friends and what you want to buy them. By sticking to a list of gift items you intend to purchase, it will dissuade you from buying more than you intend to. Remember, it’s the thought of the gift that counts—not the number of gifts. Stick to your guns, and your list, and you’ll leave the store with a smile.
IGNORE SALE SIGNS. Those sale signs and the tempting buy one, get one can send you on a shopping spree of no return—and a less than happy bank statement. We know, it can be difficult not to take a bite of one of the many sales happening throughout the holiday season. Yes, sales are great if it’s an item you had already planned on purchasing, but if it’s not, no matter how much you’re saving, you’re still spending. This is a reminder, again, to stick to that list and budget.

USE CASH, NOT CARDS. If you limit the amount of money you plan on spending, it makes it that much easier to avoid overspending! Entering a shop with cash in hand more easily allows you to keep track of how much you are spending while you’re shopping, and you won’t be surprised when you get to the checkout line to discover you’ve overblown your budget. And hey, if you finish the day off with a few extra bucks, treat yourself to a warm beverage. You’ve earned it!
Don’t procrastinate. It’s never too early to get a start on your holiday shopping. If you spread out the gift shopping over several months—yup, think summertime— you will avoid those last-minute shopping sprees where you’re more than likely to blow your budget. Allocating a set amount of money each paycheck to be used for your holiday shopping will help you get ahead of the game—and by taking this advice, it’s possible to have all of the gifts purchased, and wrapped, before Thanksgiving!
Get crafty. Especially for those with large families, too many friends to count on one hand and blessed with those kind neighbors you just can’t not include on your nice list, this is the time to do it yourself and stop in at your favorite crafts store. From buying ornaments in bulk and personalizing each one for those special people in your life to framing a family photo and decorating the frame to suit the style and taste of the lucky recipient, this is a great—and inexpensive—way to spread holiday cheer to all of those you cherish.
Donate to charity. Of course, there’s nothing more exciting than seeing a beautifully wrapped gift under the Christmas tree with our name written on the tag. What could it be? But, what if, instead of a gift you can hold in your hands, you receive a gift that makes its home in your heart. Making a financial donation to a local charity in a friend or family member’s name is a great way of spreading holiday cheer to others who may be less fortunate. Find out what causes are important to them, make a donation and send them a Christmas card sharing the news and what organization you contributed

A late Fall Getaway to the Oregon Coast Lincoln City’s Finders Keepers and Art Glass make a great theme for your trip STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARGUERITE CLEVELAND
L
ate fall is a wonderful time of the year to visit the Oregon Coast. The summer crowds are long gone and the area settles into a slower pace. Midway down the coast, Lincoln City makes a good centrally located base for all the seaside has to offer. When planning a getaway, it’s fun to design a trip around a theme. When visiting Lincoln City, it has to be the renowned Finders Keepers project and art glass. Finders Keepers Lincoln City’s Float Fairies are busy this time of year as they scurry to hide a super drop of the beautiful glass floats the town is well-known for before the Thanksgiving Holiday week. The Float Fairies are volunteers who pass a screening process, are sworn to secrecy and much like a superhero they remain anonymous. Each year they hide more than 3,000 floats on seven miles of beach from Roads End on the north to Siletz Bay on the south as part of Lincoln City’s Finders Keepers program. During the holiday week from November 22 through 25, they will hide an extra 50 floats. Finders Keepers began as a way to mark the millennium. A local artist recommended the idea of hiding the glass floats, and Lincoln City sponsored the project. The first season took place in 1999-2000 and was hugely popular. The Finders Keepers project is a perfect mix of history, art and the outdoors. Searching for glass fishing floats has long been a popular pastime on the Oregon Coast when floats can wash ashore from as far as Japan. Art Glass is a great medium for capturing the beauty of the area. For the 2018 season, eight different art studios make the brightly colored glass floats, and each are signed and numbered. Add in a nice stroll on the beach and you have a perfect activity. Learn about the history of the area at the North Lincoln County Historical Society Museum. The museum is in the midst of the Historic Taft District of Lincoln City. After visiting the museum the district is an interesting area to explore with shops, restaurants

and art glass. Your stop at the museum is to view the spectacular collection of Japanese fishing floats donated by Jim Watson and Nick Simpson. The glass floats were used to hold up fishing nets and range in size from a few inches to 2 feet in diameter. There are many unique examples of floats made in Japan for their fishing industry. Somehow they made their way all the way to the Oregon Coast by wave and ocean currents. Many an Oregon native has combed the coast hoping to find one of these treasures. Nearby is the Lincoln City Glass Center. Stop by to just watch the talented artists working with the challenging molten glass or try your hand at glass blowing yourself and make your own glass float. The whole process is very interesting and even children can participate (height restrictions). The center also has a shop where the artists have exercised their creativity with a large variety of art glass. Insider Tips: Make a reservation and know that glass art takes 24 hours to cool down so allow time to create your piece and pick it up the next day. The center can also ship your piece to you. The SW 51st Street Beach Access is nearby and a great place to start your search for a glass float. There are some basic rules when you embark on your hunt for art glass. Floats are hidden above the high tide line and below the beach embankment. Float fairies hide the glass globes every day rain or shine, and they are placed only during daylight hours throughout the day not just all at once. If you are lucky enough to find a float, call

During your trip to Lincoln City, plan a number of searches at different locations; you have 7 miles to choose from. Other Activities You won’t be bored spending a few days in the area. Begin your Christmas shopping at the Lincoln City Outlets or some of the many unique stores and shops that are along Highway 101. Make sure to stop at the Christmas Cottage, which has been a visitor favorite for 45 years. The store carries over 25,000 ornaments from around the world. The Lincoln City Culinary Center offers a variety of classes during the month of November. Relax and watch a demonstration class while learning about local foods or take a hands-on class. The center also offers custom classes. With enough notice they can arrange a class for you and your family. This is a good experience for extended family groups, a girls’ trip or a get together with your friends. Chef Donna Riani is tons of fun, and she knows how to find local experts for interesting culinary experiences. Siletz Bay is the place to crab, clam and fish. The bay is much calmer than the ocean, and everyone will enjoy the many sea birds and sea lions that frequent the area. Bill Paterek is a local resident expert. and although he

Life is good at the beach only offers his free clinics during the spring and summer months, you can tap into his expertise at his website CrabMax.com. Learn how to use a folding crab trap by watching one of his videos. You can purchase his traps at local stores or online. His website also has links to all the websites you will need regarding “the rules” and local tides. Beach crabbing is much easier to do than fishing with a quicker reward. There is something so satisfying about yanking in a trap and finding it full of crabs. Where to Stay Lincoln City has a variety of Mom-and-Pop beachfront hotels, fancy resorts and chain hotels with many options to choose from and most are on the beach, near the beach or a short walk to the beach. The Chinook Winds Casino Resort is an out-of-the-box choice for a family stay, but it is a surprising family friendly option. Non-smoking rooms are available, and the suite building is located well away from the main casino building and is ocean front. The junior suites are equipped with an oceanfront balcony, fireplace, microwave and refrigerator, and have plenty of room for a family stay. There are stunning sunset views of the Pacific Ocean from the room’s spacious balcony, and a long stretch of beach provides miles of peaceful walking. Located across the parking lot is the Play Palace, which offers safe childcare for children 3 through 11. This is a nice option if you want to enjoy a meal without the kids. At $17.95 for four hours per child, it is a bargain.

Where To Eat Lincoln City’s dining scene is very eclectic. I love off-season because you find where the locals eat. Don’t miss breakfast at Vivian’s Restaurant and Bob’s Barbeque (but locals just call it Vivian’s). This hidden gem is tucked on a side street just past the “D” River Bridge. Enjoy your breakfast with views of the world’s shortest river. The Wild Flower Grill cooks made-toorder, and the food is well worth the wait. I am still thinking about the delicious white chocolate and huckleberry cheesecake. If you like seafood you will want to have dinner at Kyllo’s Seafood and Grill. Delectable dishes are made with fresh locally sourced seafood and grass-fed beef. The crab stuffed halibut is a culinary masterpiece of halibut stuffed with Dungeness crab and ricotta, topped with a garlic sauce and garnished with wild large gulf shrimp. Plan ahead; they don’t take reservations, and you may have to wait—but oh so worth it. The Chinook Winds Casino’s premier restaurant is the Rogue River Steakhouse located at the top of the casino with 180 degree views of the Pacific Ocean. Their bone-in ribeye steak is one of the best I’ve ever eaten. The newly remodeled eatery definitely provides an upscale dining experience. The Oregon Coast is just what you need to relax and rejuvenate before the holiday season, and you can’t go wrong making Lincoln City your base.

Pesto Ricotta + RECIPE AND PHOTO COURTESY OF MARINA GUNN AND THE CULINARY STONE
Ingredients: • 2 tbsp. olive oil • 1 clove garlic, grated • 1 cup cherry tomatoes • 1 box of pasta, your choice (I love grain-free Cappellos pasta, but you can choose fettuccine, spaghetti, whatever you’d like.) • 4 basil leaves (optional) Pesto Ricotta • 8 oz. ricotta (I use a dairy-free ricotta from Kite Hill, but you can use regular ricotta as well!) • 4 oz. frozen spinach • 1 tbsp. pesto • Juice of 1/2 lemon
Method: • Place skillet over medium heat with 2 tbsp. olive oil. Once heated, add the grated garlic. Cook until browned (1 minute). • Add 3/4 cup of the cherry tomatoes and cook until browned and they have burst (7-8 minutes). Be sure to cover with a lid, as they can be messy. • While the tomatoes are cooking, combine 8 oz. ricotta, 4 oz. frozen spinach (or 2 cups fresh), 1 tbsp. pesto and the juice of 1/2 lemon to a blender. Pulse until combined. Add salt to taste and pulse once more. • Add the pesto ricotta mixture to the cooked tomatoes and turn to low heat. Cook for 8-9 minutes until heated throughout. Stir occasionally. • In a large boiling pot, boil water and cook according to the instructions for the pasta of your choice. I suggest the grain-free fettuccine from Cappello's— my favorite! • Once pasta is cooked and drained, slowly add the pasta with tongs to the pesto tomato sauce. Mix together by tossing the pasta, not stirring. • Serve with fresh basil leaves if you’d like and … enjoy!

Community Theater Groups Unite UNKNOWN LOCALS AND PANIDA PLAYHOUSE PLAYERS TAKE THE STAGE BY PATTY HUTCHENS
L
ooking for a little levity to relieve the stress before the holiday season? Come to the Panida Theater to enjoy two one-act comedies put on by the Panida Playhouse Players and the Unknown Locals on November 15, 16 and 17 at 7:30pm and on November 18 at 3:30. The first play, “Thanks A Lot”, was written and is being directed by Sandpoint’s own Becky Revak of the Panida Playhouse Players. The second, “True Believer,” was written by Chris Herron, who is part of the Unknown Locals group.
and combine the talent from both groups. Chris and the Unknown Locals have been great about bringing theater back to the stage.” It has long been a desire of the Panida to host more community plays at the historic theater, and Executive Director Patricia Walker has been working hard to do just that to the delight of many. “Acting in this town is getting better and better,” said Becky. “The actors improve with more opportunities to perform. It’s fun to watch it all evolve.”
While the title of “Thanks A Lot” may imply the show is of a Thanksgiving theme, Becky shares that the show is in fact about a case of mistaken identity. “True Believer” will also provide comedic relief while providing a Christmas theme.
While it is providing an increase in opportunity for locals, it is also drawing in newcomers to the area. “We have two new people in the cast,” said Becky of people who have relocated to Sandpoint. "We are bringing in new faces to the Panida stage.”
Becky and Chris have known one another for a long time but have never collaborated on a project until now. “We held auditions from both the Panida Playhouse Players and the Unknown Locals,” said Becky. “It’s the first time we’ve been able to appreciate
