WHO DOESN’T LOVE THE COOL, CRISP DAYS OF FALL? The smoky skies of late summer have cleared, and we can enjoy being outside to take in the colorful scenery that the season provides. Before we know it, the busy holiday season will be upon us, so why not take some time to relax, gather with friends and enjoy time in the outdoors. In this issue, we share with you a great getaway for the fall. Skamania Lodge in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge is the perfect destination to relax and enjoy the beauty of the Gorge. And for those who are more adventurous, there is plenty for you as well. If you’re anything like me, there is nothing that signifies fall more than football. Whether it is high school, college or professional, it is always exciting to attend a game. In this issue, you can enjoy learning about the perfect tailgate food and drinks to make the perfect pre-game party.

While there are some stores that are already enticing you into the holiday season with décor and gift ideas, I suggest you slow down and enjoy the present. Go on one last camping trip for the season, take a road trip to watch some of the many college games in the Inland Northwest or visit the final farmers markets of the year. There are also many opportunities to take a drive or even a train excursion to enjoy the fall colors. Whatever you choose, don’t let opportunities pass you by!

Reflection of the Season Current colors taking their cue from autumn landscapes

BY NIKKI LUTTMANN, DESIGNER, SANDPOINT FURNITURE CARPET ONE, A DIVISION OF PONDERAY DESIGN CENTER

riving along the lake, it’s easy to spot the first signs of autumn color on the hillsides. The soft greens of summer are slowly turning into the jewel-tones of fall. As the weather cools, our minds naturally turn homeward, and we long to update our homes for the long winter ahead. And right now, autumn is the perfect inspiration for updating our interiors with color. Cool, crisp mornings, warm fires and golden leaves are the perfect inspiration for current trends. By keeping it simple, we can all afford to add a little bit of autumn warmth to our homes this season. There is no need to go out and overhaul your entire home but to instead find one or two key pieces to breathe some fresh air into your current layout.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

With larger, more permanent pieces, it’s usually best to stay fairly neutral with your color choices. Flooring, sofas, dining sets, walls, etc. should all remain somewhat “safe” in tone and color. Soft grays, beiges and even charcoal grays are often best. This way, should you decide to change an accent color, it’s as simple as adding some new throw pillows, a fantastic work of art or even a slipper chair in an exciting new color that you’ve been dying to try. So, which neutrals pair best with this season’s on-trend colors? And what are the current “it” colors for fall? Well, as the air grows cooler, the green leaves of summer become laced with the golden tinge of autumn. That particular shade of green, hovering somewhere between a

such as a light, barely there pink or soft silvery gray, and it looks very contemporary and right at home with modern furnishings.

Another color that looks just as good inside as it does outdoors is a warm gold. Picture a perfectly ripe pear or yellow autumn squash. Pair that golden hue with burnished gold metallic finishes and a charcoal or navy base color, and you have a sophisticated palette that looks right at home as we transition from autumn into winter.

Some readers may notice that these so-called “trendy” colors are very reminiscent of the 1970s with the olive green, gold and rust, and you’d be correct! What keeps these colors looking just right for today’s interiors is choosing just one as an accent, rather than adding them to our homes all at once (as we did in 1975). Choose one autumnal color as a highlight and weave it in delicately with your existing neutrals and it will not overwhelm your space. Instead it will invigorate it with the feel of the outdoors. And that’s the look we’re talking about— bringing just a little bit of the outdoors in to remind us daily of the beautiful place in which we live.

Orange is yet another color that epitomizes fall. However, short of a pumpkin or two on your doorstep on Halloween night, I’m not suggesting you add just any old orange into your décor. Picture instead a deep orange hue, bordering on rust, and that’s the look. Pair it with unexpected colors,

FINANCIAL FOCUS

BE FINANCIALLY PREPARED FOR NATURAL DISASTERS

THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY YOUR LOCAL EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR, KEN WOOD.

J

ust this past year, we’ve seen natural disasters in Texas, California, Florida and Puerto Rico—and looking back even further, it’s not hard to spot other traumas in virtually every part of the country. Whether it’s a tornado, hurricane, flood or wildfire, you may be at least potentially susceptible to a weather-related event that could threaten your physical—and financial—wellbeing. How can you protect yourself? As far as your physical safety is concerned, you’re probably already aware of the steps you need to take to shield yourself and your family. And now that many alerts can be sent directly to your smartphone, you’ve got an even better chance to prepare for an approaching threat. But when it comes to safeguarding your financial situation, you’ll need to be ready well in advance—and the following moves can help: • Strengthen your home. Your home is probably your biggest asset, so you’ll want to do everything you can to keep it safe. In the face of a truly calamitous event, such as 100-mile-per-hour winds or the advance of uncontrollable fire, there may not be much you can do, but in less dire circumstances, your actions can help. Your insurance professional can offer tips on protecting your residence. • Maintain sufficient insurance. It’s a good idea to review your existing homeowners or renters insurance periodically to make sure you are sufficiently covered for all possible hazards. Keep in mind that homeowners insurance does not typically cover flooding, so you may need to purchase flood insurance from the National Flood Insurance Program. (Depending on where you live, this coverage may be required when you get your mortgage.) Also, in conjunction with maintaining your insurance, you should document your possessions, so you may want to make a video inventory as well as a written list containing descriptions and values. • Create an emergency fund. A natural disaster can lead to a wide array of unanticipated costs: appliance repair or replacement, hotel and restaurant bills, insurance deductibles—the list could go on and on. Consequently, you’ll help protect yourself and your family by building an

SandpointLivingLocal.com

26

emergency fund. Some of this money should go into a liquid, low-risk account, but you may also want to keep a small amount of cash at home in a safe place, as ATMs and credit cards may not work during or following a disaster, when you must purchase needed supplies. • Protect your documents. As you go through life, you’ll accumulate a lot of documents—mortgage papers, insurance policies, financial accounts, tax statements and so on. If disaster strikes, you may need these documents. You’ll want to store paper copies in a fireproof and waterproof box or safe at home, in a bank safety deposit box, or with a relative or close friend. Of course, we’re now living in a digital age, so you can store electronic copies of important documents in a passwordprotected format on a removable flash or external hard drive. Better yet, you might want to use a secure cloud-based service. With luck, you can avoid being victimized by a natural disaster. But, as the old saying goes, “Hope for the best and prepare for the worst.” From a financial perspective, that’s good advice.

TEACHER OF THE MONTH BY PATTY HUTCHENS

Hollie Hurst “She has a positive attitude and a genuine heart. She builds relationships with each student and strives to find connections. Her caring demeanor is evident each time we see her as she lovingly guides students in positive directions and toward making better choices. She has taken our school-wide goal of building positive relationships with students to the next level, working to get to know her students and their families. She teaches students to advocate for themselves and always has a smile and a kind word for those around her.”

A

second-grade teacher at Farmin Stidwell Elementary, Hollie Hurst is passionate about her work. And while there are so many wonderful aspects of having the privilege to teach young children, Hollie shares that what she enjoys most are those “light bulb moments.” “You know when it happens because the eyes and the faces of children light up as they gain an understanding about a new concept,” said Hollie. “They are moments to celebrate because they occur as a result of the rigorous work of focusing, practicing, collaborating and building stamina.” Hollie is in her 18th year of teaching and has taught kindergarten through fourth grade over the course of her career. Elizabeth Dalessio is the Dean of Students at Farmin Stidwell Elementary and is impressed with Hollie’s dedication and ability to connect with students. “Mrs. Hurst is a kind, loving and well-respected educator. Her classroom is a safe place where students are learning to be outstanding citizens of the school and our society,” said Dalessio.

There have been many great moments of teaching throughout the years, but Hollie said she especially takes pleasure in the humorous things that come out of children’s mouths. “When teaching fourth grade a few years ago at Sagle Elementary, we were reading an article about Martin Luther King Jr.,” recalls Hollie. “As we were reading the article aloud, it stated that he was from Atlanta, Georgia. At that moment, one of my students interjected by saying, ‘Isn't Atlanta a sunken city in the ocean?’ The confused look on his face was priceless. I keep a ‘Funny Kid Quote Box’ in my room to record these moments so I can enjoy a good laugh when I need it.” Among the many lessons of reading, math and more are the life lessons that Hollie wishes to impart on her students. “If I could share one life lesson with my students, it would be the concept that my life is a result of my perspective,” said Hollie. “I have a choice in how I see the events and people in my life. What I believe is my reality. If I don't like what I see, I can always make a change in order to see another side of an issue.”

In her words...

"If I could share one life lesson with my students, it would be the concept that my life is a result of my perspective."

Keeping our Four-Legged Friends Healthy

Being proactive can help your pet live longer

(BPT) - YOUR PETS ARE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE FAMILY, SO IT’S IMPORTANT TO PRACTICE PREVENTATIVE CARE TO SUPPORT THEIR WELL-BEING AND HELP THEM LIVE LONG, HEALTHY LIVES. But just like people, pets can be affected by chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and allergies. That's why, as a pet parent, staying informed and being proactive can help to avoid, or at least prolong, the onset of chronic conditions. Pet health trends change over time. Cats and dogs are more prone to certain conditions now than they have been in the past. For example, over the past 10 years there's been a 30 percent increase in environmental allergy cases in dogs and an 11 percent increase in cats, according to the Banfield 2018 State of Pet Health Report. Allergens can vary by region and climate, but many common triggers can be found in the home, notes the study. Additionally, pets today are also more prone to being overweight, and obesity cases are rising. One in three pets is overweight, according to Banfield, and the numbers are growing. many other health conditions you have no control over. Pets can suffer from chronic diseases such as arthritis, heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes and thyroid disease. The first step to keep pets healthy is to invest in preventative care. One of the most important things you can do to ensure the ongoing health of any animal is to bring them in for annual checkups whether they are experiencing health issues or not. This allows veterinarians to screen for a variety of health issues and provide insight on any concerns. This is also an opportunity for you to ask important questions and get expert insight. If you discover that your pet has a chronic condition that needs to be treated, don't panic. Modern medicine and treatment plans help pets live a long, high-quality life even with conditions like allergies or diabetes. You may have to make lifestyle adjustments such as changing food or activity routines, but it's usually manageable and you'll likely notice an improvement to your pet’s health and demeanor quickly. As is the case with humans, chronic conditions are often treated with preventative medications. In fact, many of the same prescriptions that

ith the leaves showing their vibrant colors and the crisp morning air reminding us that winter is just around the corner, there is still time to gather as a community and celebrate the season. The final Sandpoint Farmers’ Market of the season will take place on Saturday, October 13 from 9am to 1pm at Farmin Park and will include a Harvest Day celebration.

is a tradition for many and a wonderful way to not only buy fresh produce but to also support the local growers. The market supports local agriculture through education and a diverse community market. A grassroots, nonprofit organization, the Sandpoint Farmers’ Market is managed by its members. You can also find certified organic produce at the market, something that an increasing number of people desire.

In addition to all the wonderful vendors with everything from fresh produce to Kombucha to crafts and canned goods, there will be kids’ activities centered around a harvest theme, autumn-inspired decorations and live music with the duo Browne Salmon.

The first market in 1988 had approximately 10 vendors who offered produce, plants and flowers. The market grew significantly and was managed by volunteers. After approximately six years, the market hired a manager whose responsibilities included setting up the market, collecting fees and commissions and providing information to the public. It wasn’t

The original market did not have crafts, but they were slowly added, initially having craft vendors sell once a month, then two times a month before finally having them there each market day. Now, 30 years later, the Farmers’ Market continues to thrive. Be sure to mark your calendars for this final day of this season’s market and enjoy the fresh produce, fruits, baked goods, plants, flowers, soaps and quality handcrafted items. A heartfelt thank you to all who do so much to bring this market for all of the community to enjoy!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Medicare releases all the information about the 2019 Medicare Health Plans and Part D Prescription Plans on October 1, but applications can only be accepted for anyone making changes to their current plans during The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period or AEP, which runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. There will be an added enrollment period for Medicare Beneficiaries. Between January 1 and March 31 each year, if you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can leave your plan and return to Original Medicare and buy a Part D Prescription Drug Plan to supplement your Original Medicare. Starting in 2019, you also have the option to switch to a different Medicare Advantage Plan once during this time. November 1 starts the Annual Enrollment Period for the Affordable Healthcare Plans. This runs through December 15. “It’s important for people to understand that the Advanced Premium Tax Credit will continue to be available for people that are income eligible,” says Carey. “Even though there will be no penalty for not having a qualified health plan, the APTC makes it possible to have health insurance, which still gives you access to primary care, preventive care and hospitalization.”

erving the Sandpoint community since 2009, Carey Ann Spears, owner of Spears Insurance, an independent Idaho insurance agency, has dedicated her time working with locals to determine the best insurance policy for them and their families. Now located inside the Bonner Mall and offering a second location in Coeur d’Alene, for those looking for affordable and reliable insurance or looking to change or update their policies, Carey is ready to guide you to the right choice. Spears Insurance offers health and life insurance products including vision, dental and travel insurance for individual, family and employer groups. What sets Carey and Spears Insurance apart from other agencies is her focus on Medicare. She offers workshops throughout the year to help people better understand when to notify Social Security that they are becoming eligible for Medicare while explaining the “what” and “how” of Medicare coverage, enrollment periods, late enrollment penalties and more. “I want people to be able to make the best-educated decision regarding their health insurance as they move through life from being an individual to a family and into retirement,” she says. Carey finds the career path she has chosen to be extremely rewarding,

from helping clients understand health insurance in general, to the unique differences in eligibility for ACA health plans and the transition to Medicare. “Many people make the mistake of never reviewing their policy. Because it worked really well one year doesn’t necessarily mean that it will the next,” says Carey. “I enjoy just helping people find resources that will help them.” When it comes to the success of her business, Carey credits it to a variety of factors including self-determination. “I’ve been told many times that I couldn’t accomplish something. It just gave me more energy to prove that I could,” she states. “I’ve had a few special people in my life as well who have taken me under their wing and mentored me. Having a plan on what I think and know I have to accomplish and learning to leave the anxiety in God’s hands [has also helped lead me to where I am today].” When not in the office, Carey makes time to volunteer in the community whenever she is able to, supporting the North Idaho Federated Republican Women, Community Cancer Services and Sandpoint Area Seniors, Inc. She also belongs to the North Idaho Association of Health Underwriters, which supports several projects throughout the year for local charities. Opulence for a Cause Annual Masquerade Ball benefits Children’s Village

BY COLIN ANDERSON PHOTOS BY KEITH BOE

K

eith Boe is a busy man. Between his work in real estate, photography, managing a huge local social media group and hosting special event dinners with area chefs, it’s amazing he can find time to continually throw one of the biggest and most glamorous parties of the year. This October will mark the third year of the Epic North Idaho Life Masquerade Charity Ball. The idea first came to Keith when he discovered a real living castle on top of Schweitzer Mountain while working as a photographer for Living Local magazine. “While on a road trip late at night, the idea crossed my mind. ‘Oh my gosh! What if we did a real life Masquerade Ball, like out of a scene of a movie in a real castle! Something I’ve always dreamed about to experience and nothing I’ve ever even heard of before actually happening in real life!’” recalls Keith. The first time running an event, organizers often don’t know what to expect as far as turnout and participation, but people definitely were excited for this particular ball. People came out in droves and the costuming was opulent, elegant and beyond amazing by guests.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

Keith thought this would be a one and done event, but the feedback he received from the attendees all but forced him into making it an annual event. “Year two, we spent an absolute fortune converting the Greyhound Event Center in Post Falls into a mysterious mansion with a Golden Palace Lounge,” he said. The decorations were incredible with white ostrich feather vases—some with more than 200 feathers in each vase—a hand-painted mural 20 feet high and 50 feet wide of a mansion-grand staircase as a backdrop and the Grand Ballroom with a nebula cloud projected on the ceiling with stars moving across the sky. Tables featured ornate vases filled with branches, dripping with diamond necklaces and lit up with crystals. Aerial entertainment wowed guests as did a secret flash mob scene that broke out just as dinner was ending. Daniel Connelly Productions Troupe jumped out from among the guests at their tables and performed the masquerade scene from the Phantom of the Opera and ended in an epic sword fight on top of the guests’ dining tables. “Man, you should have seen the guests’ faces when

in the community as well. Keith has chosen Children’s Village of North Idaho as a beneficiary of funds raised at the party. “When identifying a charity, we had only one thing in mind. As a father of five, it had to help our young kids in crisis, and it had to be purely local here in North Idaho,” he said. Children’s Village is a residential home for children who are in need of a safe haven from abuse, neglect or severe family crisis and has helped more than 2,000 area children. Last year’s ball raised nearly $12,000 for the organization.

For year three, he has moved the North Idaho Life Masquerade Charity Ball to a new central location inside the Coeur d’Alene Resort. Never one to throw the same party twice, attendees will notice a few similarities to previous events but plenty of stunning new decorations, effects and surprises. While not giving away all his secrets, Keith says there will be a few more super-secret flash-mob floor shows planned with actors incognito among the guests.

The purpose of the event is two-fold; One, to provide a dreamlike experience that many of us have always wanted to live out in real life and second, to bring the community together and help raise funds for children in need, something very near to Keith’s heart.

The Ball will be held Saturday, October 20, from 6pm until 1am. Guests will dress to impress, with gentlemen in formal suits and tuxedos and ladies in ball gowns. And of course, don’t forget your masquerade mask! You will arrive to a red carpet filled with paparazzi and enjoy a champagne reception prior to dinner. A wonderful meal along with tableside entertainment will follow. When dinner concludes, nine-piece funk band Soul Proprietor will take the stage and the dancing will begin. A live DJ will finish out the night as the party won’t end until well after midnight.

This event has sold out the previous two years, and advanced ticket purchase is required. Tickets can be purchased individually, and groups of up to 10 can also be seated together. Discounted hotel rooms and additional information is available at CdAMask.com. Keith cannot guarantee he will throw the party again next year, so this could be your last chance to experience the event. Ask anyone who has attended before and you’ll be assured of an incredible experience and a night not soon forgotten.

While Keith is happy to put on a one-of-a-kind party for North Idaho, the goal is not just for people to have the time of their lives but to help out

ne of the main reasons so many longtime residents of the Inland Northwest rave about their community is the generosity of their neighbors. People hold the door open for the next person and smile and say “hello” when walking down the street. We shovel our neighbors’ driveways and sidewalks come winter and support hundreds of nonprofits that help the most vulnerable in our communities. Across the region, thousands of people are employed by, volunteer or donate to organizations that not only combat abuse, homelessness and hunger but encourage exploration of the arts, outdoors and continued education. With such a vast amount of worthy places to give your time

and money, it can be challenging narrowing down the list. Thankfully, there is an organization that for decades has been expanding this network and helping donors reach the people and causes most true to their heart. According to CEO Shelly O’Quinn, Community Foundation was established in 1974 when the Junior League, a women’s leadership group, gave $3,000 to create the region’s first community foundation so that people who cared about the Inland Northwest could collectively fund charitable projects important to the region. Since that initial investment, the Foundation has awarded more than $70 million across 20 counties in Eastern Washington, North Idaho and beyond.

Recently, Inland Northwest Community Foundation changed its name to Innovia Foundation. The new name translates to “innovative way.” “Not only does the new name subtly hearken back to the region (‘inno’ is a shortened version of ‘Inland Northwest’), but it speaks to the innovation the foundation brings to community transformation. ‘Via’ means ‘way,’ speaking to forging new paths and driving change,” explained O’Quinn. Innovia Foundation connects donor generosity to the region’s most pressing causes and collaborates with community partners to drive transformation across Eastern Washington and North Idaho. The

foundation starts with donor’s charitable intent and helps to make it more impactful by being a resource to those who want to make the world better. “We help donors and businesses focus their philanthropy for maximum impact by learning what issues and opportunities ignite their passion,” O’Quinn said. The foundation typically works with businesses and donors who know what they want to support but don’t know how. “Because we work with so many nonprofit partners, we know the organizations that are

providing services to address specific needs and greatest opportunities in our communities,” she said. The impact of Innovia Foundation across North Idaho is vast, with a variety of organizations throughout Boundary and Bonner County recently receiving grants in the amount of $255,020 through a partnership with The Equinox Foundation. This family foundation was founded on the values of wisdom, integrity and environmental stewardship. Innovia Foundation also recently partnered with the Boundary County Economic Development Council for a community presentation and conversation in Bonners Ferry to help better understand regional

issues and opportunities for impact. One example of Innovia Foundation’s community priority work is a partnership dedicated to increasing the number of third-grade students reading at grade-level proficiency in the Coeur d’Alene School District. The K-3 literacy priority resulted from CDA 2030, a formal community visioning process that enlisted the voices of thousands of residents to identify the key issues that contribute to a vibrant future. Innovia Foundation helped fund the Vision 2030 Implementation plan. Recognizing that the issue of failing literacy cannot adequately be addressed by awarding small grants to single nonprofits through traditional grant programs,

MORE THAN A PUMPKIN PATCH FARM CONTINUES TO EXPAND FESTIVAL

BY COLIN ANDERSON

A

fter a hot and smoky summer, many are enjoying the relief of clean, crisp fall air and bundling up under blankets with coffee, cocoa or cider to help ward off cool evenings. October is a time of harvest and celebration and also leads up to many kids’ favorite fall evening—Halloween. Who wouldn’t love dressing up as their favorite superhero, Disney princess or scary pirate or ghost and trekking around the neighborhood to acquire a year’s worth of sweets in one night? For many, the evening’s celebration begins weeks earlier by picking out that perfect pumpkin to carve and place out on the front porch. You’ll find crates of them for sale at grocery stores and other retailers, but if you want to add a personal touch to your Halloween decorations this year, consider picking your own, fresh off the vine. Hickey Farms has been a family run farm since the 1920s. Located about 5 miles outside of Sandpoint, the farm has provided everything from dairy to beef to produce to the surrounding communities for nearly 100 years but has gained even more attention recently for its annual harvest festival.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

“The first year we just wanted to put something together for our friends, relatives and a few kids. We had a very small pumpkin patch and not much else,” said Dean Holt, one of several family members who work the farm year round. Dean’s wife, twin brothers, mother, father and uncle all have their own niche to make the family business a success. The first ‘mini’ harvest festival went over so well the group decided to expand the operation and open it up to the community. Now in its fifth year, the pumpkin patch is a huge hit, drawing thousands of visitors during October weekends, all in search of that perfect gourd and a family fun fall outing. “Watching the kids run and grab the pumpkin they absolutely want and aren’t leaving without, the smile on their face, that’s the coolest part of the whole experience,” said Dean.

It's time to carve some pu mpkins!

The pumpkin patch at Hickey Farms continues to expand, and people are surprised to learn that the farm grows around 20 different varieties of pumpkins and another 10 varieties of squash. This means you’ll find a wide array of colors, short, tall, fat, skinny and everything in between. Dean believes there is no perfect pumpkin, but the one you choose can say a lot about you. “I think it’s good to find a pumpkin with some character, sometimes that reflects your personality, and be sure to find one with a sturdy handle,” he advised. When the patch opens the first Friday evening in October, kids are sprinting around looking for the best of the best, but without fail there are some early surprises. “Some kids want the absolute ugliest pumpkin out there, and the ones we think will be first to go often don’t,” laughed Dean. Hickey Farms is open to the public beginning at 3pm on Friday, October 6. It will then be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30am to dusk through October 27. miles, take a left onto Hickey Road and follow the signs for parking. If you are coming from Clark Fork or other areas from the east, the turnoff is located about a ½ mile past Colburn Culver Road. As you arrive you’ll quickly notice that this is more than just a pumpkin patch. All kinds of additional entertainment for adults and kids alike awaits as do delicious treats and drinks. Vendors are all from the local area, which Hickey Farms is proud to support. “At first we sought out people and vendors to come on board, and now that we’re established it’s a lot easier,” said Dean. "We have some vendors that have been with us since the beginning, and it’s been a very good partnership for both of us.” While the pumpkin patch is often the star of the show, the corn maze comes in a close second for many visitors. At more than 5,000 feet in total length, it’s no walk in the park, but don’t worry, you won’t get stuck overnight either. Local musicians and bands will be playing during the day. Scheduled to appear this season are Brown Salmon Truck, Devon Wade, Truck Mills, Chris Lynch and Brian Jacobs as well as Doug Bond. the Magician. Kids will enjoy many trips down the giant inflatable slide, and a new barrel train can take them for a short ride around the property as well. “It was kind of unexpected,” said Dean, of the popularity of the fesitval. “We hoped it would grow, but it’s been great to see the support and people coming multiple times. We hope it keeps on growing.” While kicking back and enjoying the music or scouring the patch for that perfect pumpkin, guests can enjoy a bite to eat and something warm to drink. Kessa’s Coffee, Klondyke Café, Kettle Korn Guys, Patty’s Cakes and Oilers Baked Goods will all be on hand. There is also beer and wine available for those 21 and older. Be sure to stroll through the local craft market where you can find photography, signs and other handmade goods, or just have your face painted to match the season.

“It’s not just for the kids. Obviously it’s about them, but there are all kinds of stuff for adults to do as well,” said Dean. The farm also partners with the American Heritage Wildlife Foundation on a Scarecrow Contest throughout the month. Pick up your entry form, design your scarecrow and pay your entry fee. Proceeds go to North Idaho's only 501(c)(3) working to rehabilitate both mammals and birds. While you are there, make sure to stop at the polling station and judge the scarecrows. The winners are chosen weekly and will receive prizes. Photos will be taken and promoted throughout the web. If you take a trip out to Hickey Farms, you’ll be greeted by several Holt family members each running a different portion of the festival, much like they do with the rest of the farm throughout the year. It’s the family’s hope that

they’ve created a place where families can really spend some quality time together. “We want people to come out and relax, disconnect, unplug and not be in front of a screen. Come meet your neighbors and talk to them face to face,” said Dean. If you would like to learn more about the farm, you can visit HickeyFarmsIdaho.com or find them on Facebook under HickeyFarms. Birthdays and other parties can also be arranged through social media or by calling 208.290.1539. You can get a pumpkin many places this October, but finding that perfect one fresh off the vine and spending the day with great food and entertainment from the local community will be an experience not soon forgotten.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, though women are diagnosed with breast cancer every month of the year. Early detection saves lives! Just ask Laura, Mary, Julie & Sue.

Every month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Bonner General Health. Additional entertainment will be provided by The Pottery Bug and Star the Magician. Kids will enjoy many trips down the giant inflatable slide, and a new barrel train can take them for a short ride around the property as well.

Hands-on service a hallmark for North Idaho Spas BY PATTY HUTCHENS PHOTOS COURTESY BILL CONNOLLY AND BRAD FRERKSON

NORTH IDAHO SPAS 564 BIRCH STREET (CORNER OF HIGHWAY 200 & BIRCH STREET) PONDERAY, IDAHO 83852 208.265.5434

“IT IS DIFFICULT TO STAY UP TO DATE ON THE MANY DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPAS,” SAID BILL, WHO HAS SOLD OVER 1,000 SUNDANCE SPAS. “BY FOCUSING ON ONE BRAND, I AM ABLE TO PROVIDE THE BEST SERVICE TO OUR CUSTOMERS.”

n North Idaho, not only do we love to recreate, but we also enjoy relaxing and unwinding after a day of work or play. That’s why many have turned to North Idaho Spas to help them find the perfect spa to meet their wants and budget.

North Idaho Spas has been a fixture in North Idaho selling Sundance Spas since 1995 and has built an outstanding reputation as a dealer for the largest manufacturer of spas worldwide. “In 2002 and 2005, we sold more spas per capita than any other Sundance dealer in North America,” said owner Bill Connolly. The business recently moved to a new location at the corner of Highway 200 and Birch Street in Ponderay. Along with a new location, Bill shares that he has two new members on his staff—Christine Karn and Mike Karn, a husband-and-wife team who recently moved to the area. Christine is the office manager and Mike is currently in training to be a service technician. Bill’s two sons, Tyler, 20, and Garrett, 18, are also involved in the business. They both work summers and while in high school worked at North

Idaho Spas after school. Now in college, Bill said both boys will return in the summer to help out. Bill moved to Sandpoint from San Diego in 1989. Upon his arrival, Bill worked as a technician, servicing spas throughout the region. But it was not long before he sought to fill a void in the spa industry and chose to focus on Sundance only. “It is difficult to stay up to date on the many different types of spas,” said Bill, who has sold over 1,000 Sundance Spas. “By focusing on one brand, I am able to provide the best service to our customers.” Many homeowners seek to make the spa an integral part of their landscaping, placing the spa in a location for optimal views while relaxing. “Our customers are often inspired by looking at the photos of many of our past projects,” said Bill. In fact, it is not just customers who are inspired; others worldwide are as well. For several years, North Idaho Spas has submitted photos of its completed projects to Sundance, and each year North Idaho Spas has received the International Design Award from the company.

North Idaho Spas’ focus is customer satisfaction, steering a client to something that will meet their needs and budget, not to something they will not need. They offer a five-year warranty, during which time they will repair the spa should a problem arise, and they don’t charge travel time. But it’s not just spas they carry; they also sell steamers, saunas and the famous Big Green Egg, a unique barbecue that will cook anything from steaks to pizza. Eager to give back to the community that has supported him over the last two decades, Bill is on the Board of American Legion Baseball and has served on the Sandpoint Little League Board in the past. Bill invites everyone to stop by the new location, check it out and say hello to him and his staff. After all, his customers are much more to him than patrons of his business.

“Every customer is a friend,” said Bill. “It’s just the way we do business.”

Nutrition myths that won’ t seem to go away

This is part two of a two-part series

By Kenny Markwardt, CSCS, Owner, CrossFit Sandpoint LAST MONTH I TALKED ABOUT THE FIRST SIX NUTRITION MYTHS THAT SIMPLY WON’T GO AWAY—carbs are bad, fat is bad, protein is bad, salt is bad, gluten is bad and detoxes are important and effective. Below are several more that I hope will clear up some of the confusion for you!

supplements. Please do yourself a favor and read up on anything you put in your body.

“X” supplement is the answer you’ve been looking for

Eating “clean” has become en vogue over the last decade. As with most things, the initial ideas and beliefs have been transformed and re-interpreted in ways that are misleading and unfortunate. Originally, eating “clean” meant only eating foods that were in their most natural state; foods that once were alive and had to be harvested, then prepared and consumed with limited modification, if any. This list mostly included meats, fish, vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds. In principle, a well-rounded diet including all parts of that list is a fantastic way to eat!

“Clean” eating is “healthy” eating

Plain and simple, there are no magic supplements. In fact, the vast majority of supplements are completely ineffective. Unfortunately, the supplement industry is plagued with inaccuracies, misunderstandings and flat-out lies. Supplements, unlike pharmaceutical drugs, do not have to pass a burden of proof that they actually do what they say. It’s also difficult and expensive to accurately study the efficacy of a supplement on a population, so figuring out what does and doesn’t work is quite murky and potentially dangerous. Examine.com is a fantastic unbiased website that allows you to search for and read up on all of the studies that have been done on a huge database of

Unfortunately, what started out as well rounded turned into “Paleo desserts and bacon everything.” So, while eating a diet consisting of things you could harvest from the ground or catch and kill yourself is a great way to go, just

#SweatAtSWAC WHILE EATING A DIET CONSISTING OF THINGS YOU COULD HARVEST FROM THE GROUND OR CATCH AND KILL YOURSELF IS A GREAT WAY TO GO, JUST BECAUSE IT IS “PALEO” OR “CLEAN” DOESN’T MEAN IT’S HEALTHY OR GOOD FOR YOU

because it is “Paleo” or “clean” doesn’t mean it’s healthy or good for you, nor is only eating meat and natural peanut butter. Eating many small meals throughout the day keeps up your metabolism for weight loss This idea has been around for a long time now and took hold in a time when carbohydrates were hip and fat was shunned. Because of the way in which your body metabolizes carbohydrates for energy, eating small portions of them more often rather than all at once is typically a better idea, but it doesn’t really mean what most people think it means. At the end of the day, calories in versus calories out is what matters, and it’s really up to what works best for you, your schedule, your exercise and how you feel. Intermittent fasting is the answer! Eating less frequently, or intermittently fasting, is the new way to save the world from everything. It’s also coming at a time when Ketogenic diets (very high in fat, very low in carbohydrate) are blowing up in popularity. These two go hand in hand very well. For all the reasons eating more carbohydrates more frequently was a good idea, eating fewer over fewer meals is also a decent idea, but it doesn’t make it “the way.” It’s another execution of the same equation—calories in and calories out. If you’re a person who doesn’t like to eat breakfast anyway and likes easy rules to follow like “Stop

eating at 9pm and don’t start your meals again until 1pm,” intermittent fasting can work for you. But it’s not magic. If you eat more calories in those eight hours than you expend over the 24, you will absolutely gain weight. And if you try and do any sort of intense exercise at the end of your fast, like its proponents believe you should, your performance will definitely suffer.

Don’t eat before bed There are some truths to this but generally not the ones that people will have you believe. Just because you eat something before you go to bed doesn’t mean that it will automatically turn to fat on your body. In fact, I highly recommend a post dinner “dessert” of casein protein and peanut butter to a lot of clients. Tissue repair and recovery happens overnight. Slow-digesting protein paired with dietary fat to slow that digestion down even more can be a fantastic recovery tool. Even quality carbohydrates will be digested and stored in the muscle as glycogen, which can be a great dietary strategy for people who work out late at night or early in the morning. More important than whether or not to eat late at night is what you are eating late at night, how that relates to your overall daily intake and how it affects your sleep/wake cycles. If you have a hard time falling asleep or find yourself waking up a lot throughout the night, you might look to the last thing you ate for some clues.

“THE PROTEIN THAT BINDS US” The importance of collagen BY BRI WILLIAMS, RN, BSN, REFINED AESTHETICS MED SPA, PLLC

C

ollagen, the most abundant protein in the human body, is found in our bones, muscles, skin and tendons. It is the substance that provides support and structure to our body and quite literally holds us together. Not only is this vital protein important to our overall health and feeling of wellbeing, it is also the key player in how we age. The breakdown of collagen is responsible for the loss of skin elasticity and formation of wrinkles. And since we naturally start losing collagen at the ripe age of 20, it is important to take steps now to prevent further degradation of this ever so important protein. At birth, nearly 75 percent of our skin is made up of collagen, making it firm, tight, smooth and wrinkle free. While we cannot expect to maintain the skin of our toddler years forever, we can make healthy lifestyle choices to prevent accelerated collagen degradation. High sugar diets, smoking and sun exposure are the worst offenders, and here’s why. High-sugar diets: When we consume simple carbohydrates and sugar, our body goes through a process called glycation. Blood sugars attach to proteins to form new molecules called advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs cause collagen to become dry, brittle and weak, leading to the premature breaking of the collagen. Smoking: It goes without saying that smoking is awful for your overall health, and it is particularly bad for your skin. The chemicals present in tobacco smoke damage both collagen and elastin, and the nicotine narrows blood vessels in the outer layers of

your skin. This compromises skin health by reducing the delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the skin. Lines become deeper and your skin becomes dehydrated. Sun exposure: We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again. Wear your sunscreen. Ultraviolet rays break down collagen at an accelerated rate, damaging collagen fibers and inducing the accumulation of abnormal elastin. Find shade, wear sunglasses and a hat, and always wear your sunscreen. There are things you can do to slow down the breakdown of collagen and even generate new collagen. Start with a healthy diet. Nutrients that support collagen formation include: Proline - found in egg whites, meat, cheese, soy and cabbage Anthocyanidins - found in berries and cherries Vitamin C – found in citrus fruits, pepper and broccoli Copper - found in shellfish, nuts and red meat

There are numerous in-office treatments that you can do to stimulate new collagen production including microneedling/platelet-rich plasma therapy, chemical peels, threading, cryotherapy, laser treatments and dermaplaning. At-home products that contain collagen (such as face creams) will do little to help restore your collagen levels because the collagen molecules are too large to be absorbed into the skin. However, vitamin A/retinols/retinoids will increase cell turnover and, with continued use, can increase the production of collagen. While time is never on our side in the battle of aging, there are things you can avoid and lifestyle habits you can incorporate to age as gracefully as possible. Choose a healthy and nutrient-dense diet, avoid the sun and smoking, and talk to your aesthetic provider about in-office treatments to turn back the hands of time.

What You Should Know IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT BREAST CANCER SCREENING BY LACI BURK, FNP-BC, SANDPOINT WOMEN’S HEALTH

D

uring the month of October, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, many women question if they should be getting annual mammograms. Several controversial articles have been in the news lately about the pros and cons for annual breast cancer screenings and if mammograms are even safe.

an average person is naturally exposed to over one year. Studies show the benefits of yearly mammograms for women starting at age 40 are much better than the risks of having mammograms because often times when breast cancer is discovered from other screening methods it is at an advanced stage. 3-D Mammography is the latest technology available in breast cancer screening, and it is available in the Sandpoint area only at Bonner General Health’s Imaging Center.

The most important thing for women (and men) is to know their family and personal health history and to be proactive in their health care. Women who have a family history of even one family member testing positive for the BRCA genes or having breast cancer, ovarian cancer and even peritoneal (lining of the abdominal cavity) cancer has an increased risk of developing breast cancer. The risk of developing breast cancer also increases for anyone who had radiation of their chest between the ages of 10 and 30. Women with any of the mentioned risk factors should start having mammograms no later than age 40, possibly sooner, and should talk to their health-care provider for their recommendation based on their individual risks.

Advantages of 3-D Mammography over 2-D Mammography: • Detects 40 percent more invasive cancers than 2-D Mammography • Exams use virtually the same radiation dose as 2-D Mammography • Images are taken from different angles than a traditional 2-D mammogram allowing doctors to examine breast tissue one layer at a time

Women who do not have any contributing risk factors are considered to be at an average risk for developing breast cancer over their lifetime. These women should consider starting to get mammograms no later than age 45, as recommended by the American Cancer Society, and should continue to have yearly mammograms until age 55. After age 55, women can talk to their health-care providers about their individual risk factors and, at this time, possibly start having mammograms every other year.

• Is proven to be the most superior screening for breast cancer • Results in up to 40 percent fewer callbacks for rescreening The most important thing to remember is to be proactive in your own health care. Monthly self-breast exams are still recommended, and if you notice any changes in either breast, it is more important to see your health-care provider for evaluation than think to yourself, “I don't have the typical risk factors,” because more and more newly diagnosed breast cancer patients have no risk factors.

One misconception people often have is that mammograms are unsafe due to the radiation exposure, and they feel the radiation itself can cause cancer. The radiation exposure in a mammogram is less than in a traditional X-ray. People are exposed to radiation every day in their natural surroundings. The radiation exposure from a mammogram is about 13 percent of the radiation

bs, six-pack, washboard, core or whatever you call it, a well-defined midsection is a highly coveted piece of flesh. It’s possible to buy all kinds of implants, and abdominal implants are no exception.

WANT ABS? It takes more than just exercise BY RYAN EGAN, LICENSED JOINT AND MOVEMENT SPECIALIST AND OWNER OF MVMNT GYM SANDPOINT

Even with a decent diet and exercise, most people find themselves with an insufficient return on investment for their “core” work. Countless crunches and innumerable 60-second bursts of belly buffing have left many people, and their faithful “checker outers,” unsatisfied. First, the core is a vast layered network of highly organized tissue and is primarily an organized reflex aimed at stabilizing the spine and transferring energy from the pelvis to the ribcage. This allows the mid-section to be a highly adaptable and fluid piece of equipment. Like any tissue in the human body, to make it stronger, and more robust, it needs to be stressed. But that stress needs to be strategic and specific to produce the results you seek. Unfortunately the enemy of your dear abs is your diaphragm, and to make matters worse your nervous system is not super excited about stressing the dickens out of your midsection while limiting your ability to breathe. Because breathing is a touch more important that your abs, your brain will inhibit neurological load in favor of keeping the diaphragm operating as economically as possible, which limits the force needed to forge an iron core. Because not breathing is, well, pretty darn stressful, which increases sympathetic drive (fight and flight) and makes your ab work a giant threat to your system, this makes your brain respond negatively, basically making your CNS perceive you’re drowning on your yoga mat.

IF YOU WANT ABS, YOU NEED TO LEARN TO BREATHE. AND IF YOU WANT TO STRENGTHEN YOUR BREATH, YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO ORGANIZE YOUR CORE. SandpointLivingLocal.com

60

If you want abs, you need to learn to breathe. And if you want to strengthen your breath, you need to understand how to organize your core. It’s a bit of a catch 22, but this could explain the lack of results most people experience. Your diaphragm needs to be strong enough to withstand your training. However, you need to be able to breathe smoothly while you squeeze your core during whichever six-minute Instagram ab routine you’re doing, or seven minute routine, because no one works out in six minutes. Breathing smooth and “bracing” your core is how you maintain Intra-Abdominal Pressure (IAP) and is the key synchronizing breathing mechanics, skeletal position and muscle organization. Over time, the diaphragm and the core get stronger together. As a testament to this fact, the strong men of old use to show off their “core” strength by blowing into hot water bottles until they exploded. It’s also commonly understood that having a “strong core” prevents back pain. While I agree in spirit I disagree in reality, as strength is a relative factor and is very difficult to objectively evaluate. The key to having a healthy lumbar spine free from back pain is a trunk that is well organized, balanced in development and has re-integrated its reflexive qualities while maintaining adequate pressurization. Of course that’s assuming your weak core is the cause of your back pain, which is rarely the case. Honestly, the number of trainers and people who have “strong cores” and still have back pain is staggering. Has anyone even thought to wonder that their core routine might be the problem? Chances are it’s certainly contributing.

T Natural Support HEALTH & LIFESTYLE

he human immune system is one of the most amazingly complex network of cells and organs that our body has, right up there with our nervous system. It protects us from infection and other harmful influences and is vital for keeping us healthy and alive. When pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungus enter our body, the immune system steps in to handle the challenge. This response is a dynamic process that unfolds at multiple levels.

For Our

Immune System

The word “immune” comes from the Latin word immunis, which means to be free from or untouched by. This system not only protects us from outside invaders, it fights against our body’s own cells that have changed or mutated. A properly functioning immune system is able to distinguish between cells that threaten us and cells that are essential and necessary to our health. There is anywhere from 39 to 100 trillion bacteria in our body. Some estimates indicate there are 10 times more microbial cells in the body than human cells. Ninety-nine percent of these are beneficial and help regulate our digestion and metabolism. Being able to distinguish what is good from what is bad is simply remarkable.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BY SCOTT PORTER, CENTER FOR FUNCTIONAL NUTRITION

Coughing, sneezing, fevers, diarrhea and vomiting, while unpleasant, are actually very healthy responses the immune system initiates to get rid of harmful invaders. Expelling toxins is sure quicker than fighting them directly. The largest organ of immunity is our digestive system. The gut provides a barrier to pathogens. Most bacteria are unable to survive passing through stomach acid. Our intestines host beneficial bacteria that fend off the detrimental microbes that do make it past the stomach. When pathogens actually get into our body, the lymph system is quick to send out specialized cells to fight infections. These warriors are referred to as T, B and natural killer cells. Because the thymus decreases in size as we age, the body is less able to produce T cells. We get sick easier when we are older. Problems with the immune system have been linked to inappropriate nutrition. Since everyone is different, genetically and how they live their life, there is no one standard of what we may be missing or need. But there are some reasonable things to consider. When I start to feel sick, the first question I ask myself is, “What do I need to support my body to take care of me?” Getting lots of rest is critical. Sleep directly impacts our immune system. I often recommend taking melatonin before bed as part of an immune-boosting regimen. Obtaining adequate liquids and nutrition is vital. Stay away from foods that cause inflammation, flour and sugar, and oxidative stress. Yes, sometimes antibiotics, steroids and inhalers are necessary and effective, but these have downsides. I keep close at hand good probiotics, prebiotics, zinc and vitamins A, C and D. I like liposomal vitamin C as it doesn’t give me diarrhea. When I need a bit more, I reach for n-acetyl cysteine, olive leaf, echinacea, astragalus and mushrooms. My heavy hitters are berberine, enzymes, colostrum and monolaurin. Stop on by to hear more.

The Power to Change

Combining the Blue Zones with yoga, people can live longer, healthier lives BY PATTY HUTCHENS PHOTOS COURTESY JODY PIGNOLET

W

hen Peter Mico started to feel the physical effects of a long career in the restaurant industry, he knew he had to make a change. With back issues from long hours of standing on concrete floors and pain from his days as an athlete, Peter was facing surgery and the uncertainty of what the future would bring. One day, over 20 years ago, Peter came across an instructional yoga DVD while shopping and decided to give it a try. Over time, he noticed a significant increase in his flexibility and strength, a decrease in his pain and a general overall happiness. “Yoga is a healing, as well as strengthening, art,” said Peter, who never had to undergo the surgical procedures he was told would alleviate his pain. It was the beginning of a life transformation not only for Peter but for others who would later become his students of the ancient practice of yoga. One of those students is Jody Pignolet, who was first introduced to yoga while taking swimming lessons. “My swimming instructor began each class with yoga,” said Jody, who began taking lessons from Peter approximately 10 years ago and received her training and certification in Greece three years ago. Peter, who has owned a yoga studio in Downtown Sandpoint for more than a decade, has studied with yoga masters from around the world. In his quest of the ultimate goal of living a long, healthy life, Peter researched many ways in addition to yoga to achieve his goal. It was during this research that he discovered information on the “Blue Zones”; different areas in the world where people live much longer than average. The term was coined by Dan Buettner, who first wrote about his research in the November 2005 issue of National Geographic and has since performed extensive research on the topic. The Blue Zones Defined The Blue Zones, as defined by Buettner, are five places in the world where people not only live much longer than average lives but also live more fulfilling lives. The places Buettner and his research team defined as the Blue Zones are the following: • Barbagia region of Sardinia – Mountainous highlands of inner Sardinia with the world’s highest concentration of male centenarians. • Ikaria, Greece – Aegean Island with one of the world’s lowest rates of middle-age mortality and the lowest rates of dementia.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

• Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica – World’s lowest rates of middle-age mortality, second highest concentration of male centenarians. • Seventh Day Adventists – Highest concentration is around Loma Linda, California. They live 10 years longer than their North American counterparts. • Okinawa, Japan – Females over 70 are the longest-lived population in the world. Buettner subsequently assembled a team of medical researchers, anthropologists, demographers and epidemiologists to search for evidence-based common denominators among all places and found nine: 1. Move Naturally. The world’s longest-lived people don’t pump iron, run marathons or join gyms. Instead, they live in environments that constantly nudge them into moving without thinking about it. They grow gardens and don’t have mechanical conveniences for house and yard work. 2. Purpose. The Okinawans call it “Ikigai,” and the Nicoyans call it “plan de vida”; for both it translates to “why I wake up in the morning.” Knowing your sense of purpose is worth up to seven years of extra life expectancy. 3. Down Shift. Even people in the Blue Zones experience stress. Stress leads to chronic inflammation associated with every major age-related disease. What the world’s longest-lived people have that we don’t are

routines to shed that stress. Okinawans take a few moments each day to remember their ancestors, Adventists pray, Ikarians take a nap and Sardinians do happy hour. 4. 80-Percent Rule. “Hara hachi bu,” the Okinawan 2,500-year-old Confucian mantra said before meals, reminds them to stop eating when their stomachs are 80-percent full. The 20-percent gap between not being hungry and feeling full could be the difference between losing weight or gaining it. People in the Blue Zones eat their smallest meal in the late afternoon or early evening, and then they don’t eat any more the rest of the day. 5. Plant Slant. Beans, including fava, black, soy and lentils, are the cornerstone of most centenarian diets. Meat—mostly pork—is eaten on average only five times per month. Serving sizes are 3 to 4 ounces, about the size of a deck of cards. 6. Wine at 5. People in all Blue Zones (except Adventists) drink alcohol moderately and regularly. Moderate drinkers outlive nondrinkers. The trick is to drink one to two glasses per day (preferably Sardinian Cannonau wine), with friends and/or with food. And no, you can’t save up all week and have 14 drinks on Saturday. 7. Belong. All but five of the 263 centenarians they interviewed belonged to some faith-based community. Denomination doesn’t seem to matter. Research shows that attending faithbased services four times per month will add four to 14 years of life expectancy. 8. Loved Ones First. Successful centenarians in the Blue Zones put their families first. This means keeping aging parents and grandparents nearby or in the home (it lowers disease and mortality rates of children in the home, too). They commit to a life partner (which can add up to three years of life expectancy) and invest in their children with time and love. (They’ll be more likely to care for you when the time comes.) 9. Right Tribe. The world’s longest-lived people chose–or were born into–social circles that supported healthy behaviors. Okinawans

“They go back home with a template they can work from. It’s not a diet or a routine. It’s a way of living that translates into everyday life,” said Gloria. created “moais”–groups of five friends that committed to each other for life. Research from the Framingham Studies shows that smoking, obesity, happiness and even loneliness are contagious, so the social networks of longlived people have favorably shaped their health behaviors. (The above was taken from Power 9® Reverse Engineering Longevity by Dan Buettner.) The Blue Zones and Yoga: A Perfect Match All of this made perfect sense to Peter, who has now integrated the concept of living a “Blue Zone life” with the practice of yoga to create incredible opportunities for people. He, along with Jody, his daughter Kristen Mico and longtime friend and colleague Dr. Gloria Waterhouse, conduct Blue Zone yoga retreats, and together they are transforming lives. “I began to think that maybe there’s a collaboration between yoga and Blue Zones,” said Peter of when he first came up with the concept. “Blue Zone living is a way of life, and yoga can help bring you into the zone more

quickly by reducing your stress.” They have conducted two retreats to Costa Rica and are traveling on a third one this month to Greece. “I love the intimacy of having a smaller number of people,” said Jody, citing they have had groups that averaged eight people so far. “But we could take anywhere from 10 up to 20 people and still have a great student-to-teacher ratio.”

The group’s goal is to help those on their retreats learn about the different practices of yoga and the Blue Zones, and that in turn will help their body and soul to feel better. “They go back home with a template they can work from. It’s not a diet or a routine. It’s a way of living that translates into everyday life,” said Gloria. “The idea is simple: reconnect with self, purpose and passion.”

When traveling to the Blue Zones for their retreats, they are mindful of the setting and the culture they are visiting. “We do not want to be the tourists who come in and leave a carbon footprint,” said Peter, who shares that the group will clean up beaches and participate in giving back to the communities they visit in other ways. “Creating community is one of the core values of our retreats,” added Jody.

Each morning during the seven-day retreat, the group wakes up to the sound of chimes at 6:30 and participates in a group meditation. They then gather around the table for breakfast followed by their first yoga session of the day. “All meals are community meals,” said Gloria. The meals are either prepared by a chef in the villa where they stay or by Peter and are made from locally sourced food. It’s a time for those on the retreat to share a meal and fellowship.

The locations are extremely remote as the importance of stepping out of one’s everyday life and making oneself more available to the experience is vital.

Individuals are then given an opportunity to explore the area, whether it is the local markets, ruins, go on a hike, go fishing or relax on the beach. When they return to their villa they

participate in an afternoon yoga session and lessons from the Blue Zone by Gloria, a PhD psychologist, who translates the lessons into aspects of personal development, overall health and rejuvenation. “It’s all about community and connection,” she said, emphasizing that the Blue Zone retreats are for people of all skill levels and ages. The group agrees that much of the Blue Zone philosophy revolves around having a purpose in life, and Jody said they see that in the Blue Zone places they travel. “I have been blown away by the quality of the people we have connected with. They are happy and welcoming and find a real joy in giving.” The tenet of having a reason to get up in the morning is especially evident in the fact that in all the places that have been identified as the Blue Zones there is multi-generational living. The older generation is not put into homes for the elderly to live out their days; instead they live with family members and are surrounded by ones they love. And when it comes to practicing what the three leaders preach, there is no doubt they do this. Peter said he has taken the philosophies of the Blue Zone and applied them to his everyday life, and the difference has been impactful. “When we go to the market in the Blue Zones, there are no processed foods, there is not any

If you eat healthy, the planet will in turn be healthier.” The Blue Zone retreats are unique in that they are not just focused on the physical aspect of nurturing the mind, body and spirit through yoga but also on the outside influences of environment that can benefit you as well. “Yoga is wonderful, but one also gets validation from other places like the Blue Zone way of living,” said Jody.

She shares a story of a woman in her 80s who recently traveled to Costa Rica on one of their Blue Zone retreats. “She said her whole life she has never felt comfortable in groups and never felt connected. She said she felt that for the first time in her life with us on the retreat.” Jody was truly moved by the impact their time with this woman had on her. Sharing his experiences and the benefits he has received through yoga and living a Blue Zone way of life is something about which Peter is passionate. “Yoga has changed me, and now the Blue Zone life is changing me,” he said. Blue Zone Yoga is affiliated with Blue Zone, LLC with a pending licensing agreement. Blue Zone, LLC is continuing to research the Blue Zones and ways to integrate its principles into various cities in the U.S. The partnership between Blue Zone Yoga and Blue Zone, LLC is one that Peter said he hopes will grow as people begin to learn the benefits of both yoga and the Blue Zone way of life. For more information on the Blue Zone retreats, and to see photos of the spectacular locations where the retreats are held, go to BlueZoneYoga.com. ootball season is upon us and with that comes the traditional “pre-funk” known as … the tailgate party. Hot dogs, burgers and beer have dominated this arena for a long time, along with the rogue seven-layer dip here and there. Below we have compiled a few ideas to elevate your tailgate soirée to the next level. 1. Chili Cheese Calzones This is a great handheld variation on your favorite chili recipe. You can make your own dough, buy it premade or even use premade pie crust out of the refrigeration section. Simply spread your favorite chili on half of the dough, add cheddar cheese then fold the dough over, crimp the edges and bake until golden brown. 2. Cerveza Sangria Try this variation of a beer cocktail that will cut down the sidelines of all those spicy tailgate dishes to score a winning goal. Slice lemons, limes and oranges and mix them into pineapple juice. Mix 50-percent juice with a light beer and serve. Some people like a shot of vodka but hey, I’m not looking.

3. Blackened Corn Guacamole with Blue Tortilla Chips This version of guac will put your tailgate party into overtime, if it lasts that long. Place a cast-iron pan on high heat. After two to three minutes, cover the pan with a single layer of frozen corn. Let the corn sit for two minutes. Turn heat off and stir corn around. Add corn to your guacamole. Garnish with chopped red onions, fresh lime and cilantro. Add a side of blue corn chips and boom! 4. Sourdough Bread Bowl with the Ultimate Cheese Dip This smoky, spicy cheese dip has had tailgaters across the U.S. chasing me down for the recipe. I’ve never given it out. (Mostly because it’s so simple. It made me seem a little more “cheffy” if they didn’t know that.) So here it is, don’t tell anyone. Hollow out a sourdough bread bowl saving the guts to dip with. In a food processor add: 1 package Boursin cheese 1/4 Ib. cream cheese 3/4 Ib. shredded white cheddar cheese 2 chipotle peppers from canned in adobo sauce 1 tbsp. minced garlic 1/4 cup honey Pulse all until mixed well and fold in 1/2 cup small diced celery. Place this in your bread bowl and refrigerate until ready to use. Get ready to be the hit of the party. 5. Meatball Sliders Everyone loves sliders. Everyone loves meatballs. Let’s recruit these two star players to the next game and get them on the same team! This one is pretty simple, but here is how I would go about these little tasty

morsels. Simmer your meatballs in your favorite marinara sauce, adding a little red chili flakes for that field-goal kick. Lightly butter a cast-iron pan on medium heat, toast your slider buns until golden brown. Place one meatball onto a slider half, add a little more sauce, blanket a slice of Provolone cheese, the meatball and put the lid on it. 6. Warm German Bleu Potato Salad Take your bucket of store-bought potato salad with its heavy citric-acid flavor over to your neighbor’s house as a kind gift. Now ‌ the following recipe is all to your taste so I will give you a quick breakdown of the gameplay, break! Boil diced red potatoes, strain and set aside. Cook diced pieces of bacon, saving 3 tablespoons of the fat. Mix in just enough mayonnaise to lightly coat all potatoes. Mix in just enough Inglehoff grain mustard until you start to taste it. Add bacon and fat. Add chopped green onions. Add small diced red onions. Salt and pepper to taste then fold in crumbled bleu cheese. Serve warm. Chilled is good, too! 7. Meatloaf Tacos This wacky combination was the result of a last-minute invitation I had to a Super Bowl party, and all I had in the house were leftovers. Well, it turned out to be a major highlight of the game! Slice cold meatloaf into one-inch slabs, then cut those into four pieces each. On a medium hot skillet, heat small tortillas and set aside. Heat meatloaf pieces and place on each tortilla. Garnish with cilantro and shredded cheese. I rubbed the meatloaf pieces with chipotle ketchup (1 chipotle pepper from canned in adobo sauce) to one cup ketchup in the blender. Touchdown!

accompany some of the darkness; the spice to dance around a big, bold, beautiful bully. Let’s start with that last statement. Let’s start with one of my favorite fall dishes and what to pair it with. Osso Buco. This is a rich Italian dish classically braised with white wine. Modern variations include crushed tomatoes and have been made with red wine. Sometimes I like to use oxtail in place of veal shanks, as they lend to a very rich sauce as they break down. So you would never go wrong with a big wine that has its boxing gloves on, but this is the time that I pull out the perfectly acidic but beautifully tannic petite verdot. Petite verdot can dance circles around and tame the almighty osso buco. Fall is harvest season. Fall is … apples. Fall is cider. A great hard cider is one of the best beverages you can pair with a good pork dish. I recently made this dish, and not only did I accompany it with a dry hard cider, I used the cider in the recipe and had a little while cooking—if I don’t say so myself. Blackened pork loin with caramelized local apples, crispy Brussels sprouts with bacon and a reduced hard cider demi glace. Chardonnay. I know there is controversy over oak, unoaked, lightly oaked … chablis! Let’s just put all of that aside for this next pairing. For this next pairing I want you to grab the butteriest, boldest oak bomb that you can get your hands on. These big chards hold their own against their red brothers in these rich culinary months. Grab that butter oak bomb and enjoy this next pairing with me. Cast-iron seared u-10 dry scallops with a celeriac parsnip puree, garlic buttered peas and a brown buttered dashi pan sauce. Now I know you are thinking to yourself, “Troy, umm, acid, umm, sauvignon blanc or pinot gris perhaps?” You would not be wrong! But they had their chance two months ago. Have them with your next dungeness crab and artichoke family Sunday dinner! I am going deep and rich here … trust me. OK, throw a grilled half lemon at this dish if you must have your acid fix. (Shhh … that’s what I did.) Beer! This is also a great season for beer. Breweries are gearing up for their hot-selling winter concoctions, but they do not overlook the fall season. I’m not talking about pumpkin spiced beer that was also the next flavored syrup at your favorite coffee stand. Not that

there’s anything wrong with that. Check out some of my favorite ways to use beer and also pair beer with these seasonal meals. Venison chili made and served with Rogue Brewery Chocolate Mocha Stout. Shiner Bock Chicken. This delicious dish is marinated in a Shiner Bock Ale brine for 24 hours then roasted to a golden crisp. Served with … Shiner Bock Ale. The Japanese cowboy steak accompanied with Sapporo Lager. Take your favorite cut of steak and marinate it for 20 minutes in a solution of: Sapporo Lager, soy sauce, rice wine vinegar, liquid smoke, garlic and onion powder, black pepper. Grill or pan sear it on medium high until your preferred temperature, I mean medium rare. Remove steak from pan and let it rest, as it has worked so hard to this point, let it rest. On medium heat, ladle in a little more

marinade to the pan and cook for one minute. Turn heat off and add a pat of cold butter. Stir until butter is melted and pour over that beautiful steak you just created. Cocktails as Food Pairings. Sometimes when I am out I like to start my culinary night with a cocktail. I usually then move onto wine with dinner. However, dang it, sometimes I just like to ride the train I came in on! We know that sushi has a mandatory pairing of sake, and I’m not here to dispute that. However, after running a sushi bar for 13 years I saw the light. Do I enjoy sake with sushi? Yes. I also found that sushi pairs awesomely with pinot gris and sauvignon blanc wines. Yeah, yeah, it’s that whole acid thing again. Champagne really goes well with sushi—I call this pairing “Sparkle Fish.” Then I became a sushi and cocktails guy.

I enjoy sushi like you would enjoy tapas; slow drawn-out meals to socialize. Almost, snacks, if you will, not gluttonous meals that might lead you to call an Uber to lug your non bikini-season body home. So I came to enjoy martinis, lemon drops, Sazeracs, Washington apples, even Long Island iced teas! OK … call the Uber. Cocktails with rich Southern dishes. To sum up some of these fall pairings, I would like to head South. I like a good Manhattan. I like bourbon. One of my favorite desserts is pecan pie with a Makers Mark Manhattan to end a perfect fall night. Second to that is Bread Pudding with a hard sauce and a Jack Daniels served neat to let me know that I have done things right. Cheers!

TRAVEL & LEISURE

When the Lodge is the Destination Set in the Heart of the Columbia River Gorge, You’ll never want to leave the Skamania Lodge STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARGUERITE CLEVELAND

S

et in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, the beautiful Skamania Lodge is a destination in itself. It was designed to evoke the history and charm of early National Park lodges such as the Old Faithful Inn at Yellowstone National Park and the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park, yet it has all the modern amenities one would expect in an upscale resort. The stunning lobby has a soaring 85-foot-tall stone fireplace and floor-toceiling windows providing views of the expansive lawn and Columbia River Gorge. Whether you want to relax or experience high-energy adventures, the resort has an activity for you. Onsite Escapades Skamania Lodge Adventures is located on the resort grounds and offers three different options for thrill seekers. The Zipline Tour includes seven ziplines ranging from 100 to 900 feet and is fully guided. If you like to be challenged by obstacles, the Aerial Park is for you. There are 19 platforms and 23 elements to test your skills including a canoe. If you’ve ever stood up in one while on the water, you can imagine how it feels to navigate across one hanging in the air. After a safety briefing and equipment training, you will be on your way. The course is self-guided, but park monitors are on the course to assist and provide encouragement as needed. One of the latest trends in group activities is Forged Axe Throwing. Razor-sharp forged axes are thrown at wood targets. It is similar to darts but with an axe and super fun. There is something so deeply satisfying about flinging an axe and hearing the thump when it hits the target. Skamania Lodge Adventures is open year round. PetFriendly to observe the course.

website for ideas. You can also fill out a concierge request online for help planning and booking activities. Head into town. Stevenson has a variety of restaurants and shops to visit. The Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center is walking distance from the lodge. The center has a multistory exhibit area, a movie and artifacts that tell the story of the area’s history and the role the Columbia River plays in it. Well worth the time to visit. And don’t miss the outdoor exhibits of trains and farm equipment. Beacon Rock State Park is a short drive to an epic hike to the top of Beacon Rock. The trail is 1.8 miles round trip, and when you look up to view some of the 52 switchbacks that make up the trail, it’s hard to believe it is rated easy or moderate. The switchbacks make it a gentle climb up to the top making it a great trail for family hiking. The trail is historic and was built between the years 1915 and 1918 by Henry Biddle, a local philanthropist, who wanted the public to always be able to enjoy this spot. From the top there are views of the Columbia River Gorge, the Bonneville Dam and Hamilton Mountain. Pet-Friendly. Make sure to stop at the Bonneville Dam. The Washington Shore Visitor Complex has so much to see. The Visitor Orientation Building has exhibits that focus on the history of the dam and exhibits on how hydroelectric power works. You can take a powerhouse tour by signing up at the front desk or view the powerhouse from a viewing window from

SandpointLivingLocal.com

85 feet above the floor. The Fish Viewing Building has exhibits on salmon as well as the natural and cultural history of the area. The highlight is the fish viewing windows where you can see fish and eels navigate the fish ladder from below the water level. Venture out a little further and cross the Bridge of the Gods over the Columbia River to Oregon. Your destination is the Bonneville Fish Hatchery, which was built in 1909. This is a surprisingly cool place. It’s part botanical garden and part fish hatchery with a very eclectic gift shop. The highlight of any visit to the hatchery is the Sturgeon Viewing Center to see Herman the Sturgeon who is about 10-feet long, weighs 500 pounds and is 45 years old. Insider Tip: Fall is the best time to visit and see the Chinook and Coho salmon spawning. The Skamania Lodge is the perfect destination for a romantic getaway or a family adventure. Its location in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area makes it convenient to all the activities the gorge has to offer. It is also very pet friendly. Some of the pet-friendly rooms offer a back door, making it convenient to take your pet out, and the pet fee includes a bag of goodies to make your pet’s stay more enjoyable. For your next vacation consider the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area where you can do as much, or as little, as you like.

Autumn Crudité Platter RECIPE COURTESY OF MARINA GUNN AND THE CULINARY STONE

Ingredients: • 1 box of assorted crackers • 6 different seasonal vegetables such as carrots and radishes (with the green leafed tops kept on for presentation or green tops cut off), roma tomatoes, peppers, celery, heirloom tomatoes, snap peas, etc. We suggest finding fresh seasonal fall produce in your area, which will make for a unique crudité platter unique to you and your location! Wash and present each vegetable as you would like. • ⅓ cup cured olives (castelvetrano or kalamata) • 8 oz. ricotta or alternative dairy-free ricotta option • 2 cups spinach • ⅓ cup pesto (store bought, or you can make yourself!) • 1 clove garlic, grated • Juice of 1 lemon • Salt and pepper to taste • Olive oil to top

Method: • Make the Pesto Ricotta Dip by adding ricotta, spinach, pesto, grated garlic, lemon juice and salt to a food processor or blender. Pulse until fully combined and smooth. Transfer to a medium dipping bowl and drizzle the top of the dip with olive oil of your choice. • Assemble platter by first adding the Pesto Ricotta Dip in its medium dipping bowl onto a large serving platter. • Add assorted crackers in small sections. Add in your seasonal produce in a circular design around the platter, finishing in the center. • Serve your Autumn Crudité Platter + Pesto Ricotta Dip for the perfect fall celebration or get together! Enjoy!

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Misery STEPHEN KING COMES TO SANDPOINT BY PATTY HUTCHENS

W

ith Halloween right around the corner, it’s a perfect time for a scary evening that is sure to keep you entertained.

This month, The Heartwood Center in Sandpoint will play host to Cade Prophet Memorial Production’s play “Misery.” Based on the best-selling book, “Misery,” by Stephen King, the book was adapted to the stage by Simon Moore. “There are only two characters in the play. Annie Wilkes, who is played by Kate McAlister, and Paul Sheldon, played by Eric Bond,” said Producer Ken Wood. “The play tells the story of a famous writer, Paul Sheldon, who is essentially held prisoner by a fan. It is very clear early on that Annie is suffering from mental illness and, when she reads his latest novel, she becomes enraged that her favorite character is killed off. She essentially forces him to write a new novel, bringing the main character, Misery, back to life while continuously tormenting Paul to bend him to her will.” Rehearsals have been in full swing since August, but as one can imagine with a two-character play, McAlister has been studying and practicing lines for several months. “This is a play that has been on our minds since the beginning of the year, and we are very excited to bring a well-known book/movie to the stage in our community,” said Wood, who cautioned that the play is best suited for adults.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM! thanks for joining our adventure!

Wood said he read the book years ago and has also watched the movie. “The play, in my opinion, is even better than the movie in developing the characters and does an amazing job of keeping the audience on the edge of their seats,” he said. “Plus, the opportunity to showcase this play during the Halloween season is very exciting given the dark nature of the story.” Don’t miss out! The play will be performed at the Heartwood Center on October 19, 20, 26 and 27 at 7pm with the doors opening at 6:30pm. There will be a special late-night Halloween showing October 31 at 8pm with doors opening at 7:30pm. Tickets are $15 for general admission and $13 for students and seniors and are available at Eichardt’s, Eve’s Leaves, at the door on the night of the shows and at BrownPaperTickets.com
