Bonner General Health Community Hospice

PUBLISHER Be Thankful and Extend Gratitude AS WE HEAD INTO THE CRISP FALL DAYS, it is easy to forget about the smoke that hovered over the Northwest for the last days of summer. While the country was focused on the horrific hurricanes in the south, our area of the world witnessed wildfires erupting that destroyed people’s homes, forced evacuations and had people suffering from health problems due to the excessive smoke. For those who have been affected by these acts of Mother Nature (or in the case of some of the fires, acts of careless people) their lives will be changed forever. And it is not just the victims whose lives were in danger; it was the first responders as well.

“To all the hospice workers who were so kind and caring during my husband’s illness. You made this tough process much easier for both of us. My husband was very appreciative of all your efforts to make him comfortable. God bless you as you continue your difficult job.”

For many, we remain unaffected by the wildfires and hurricanes. But that does not mean we should sit by idly. There are many organizations to which you can donate, but before you do make sure they are legitimate, as sadly, it is also a time when people take advantage of others and scammers come out of the woodwork. Also, whenever possible, extend gratitude to first responders. They put themselves in danger to protect us, and it is a true gift. Be grateful. Be thankful. We never know when we may need the help of a neighbor or stranger.

ESSENTIALS By Annie Nye, Interior Designer, Selkirk Glass & Cabinets, a division of Ponderay Design Center

FALL HAS ARRIVED

TAKE THE TIME TO ENJOY WHAT’S IMPORTANT

THE PUMPKIN SPICE CRAZE IS HERE, so fall must be in the air. Those who love the holidays are starting to count down the days until Thanksgiving and Christmas. Those of us in the building industry are hoping that the people who want their remodels completed by those big holidays have planned ahead and are already in the process. The days are getting shorter and the air is cooling off, so we’ll start spending more time inside. We’ll also be spending more time in our cars running kids around to various school activities, dropping them at practices, and then attending sporting events, which also may mean more traveling on the weekends. So … this may lead to leaving dirty dishes in the sink, the laundry piling up and the house not as clean as we’d like. I’m not saying this is everyone, and what if it’s not you? Congratulations! You are either Superman or Wonder Woman, or you are missing out on other activities while

SandpointLivingLocal.com

19

DON’T BE FUSSY you stay home to do those chores. (Or you’re retired with more time.) However, I have decided this fall that I’m done being fussy about our house. Instead of staying home cleaning, I’m going to be out in the driveway in the evenings shooting hoops with the kids. I’ll be at their games and spend my weekends having more fun with my family. We’re organized, we’re decluttered, and although it’s not perfectly spotless, it’s good enough for us. What’s working for us? I’ve written in the past about putting a load of laundry in the morning or doing a few loads during the week to eliminate the big pile on the weekend. How picking one room to clean throughout the week will help eliminate having to clean the whole house at once. I’ve also written about how to minimize your clutter by eliminating things you don’t need. I’m a firm believer in these, especially the decluttering. Just let it go. By minimizing and getting rid of things we didn’t need, we also let go of the clutter in our house, which made it much easier to keep things picked up simply because we don’t have those things anymore to pick up!

proud to be a part of sandpoint

We spent a little extra money on getting organized, allowing us to keep things out of the way, and providing freedom of more “space” in our home. If you do the same, instantly, it will feel cleaner and you won’t be a slave to the mess. It’ll also makes it easier to wipe off those countertops because they won’t have anything lying around on them, the floor will be easy to vacuum or mop because you don’t have to move things first, and the clothes will be easy to put away because they have a specific spot they belong. In the long run, you will save yourself some time, too, because instead of looking for things, you will know where they are, and when you’re done, you will know where to put them back where you found them. Win-win, right? There’s always ways to fine-tune our houses (or households for that matter), but discovering that feeling of being content where you can actually sit back and really enjoy that cup of coffee in the morning or that glass of wine at the end of the day in your own house is pretty priceless.

THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY YOUR LOCAL EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR, KEN WOOD. WHEN YOU CREATE YOUR financial and investment strategies for retirement, what will you need to know? In other words, what factors should you consider, and how will these factors affect your investment-related decisions, before and during your retirement? Consider the following: • Age at retirement – Not surprisingly, your retirement date likely will be heavily influenced by your financial situation – so, if you have to keep working, that’s what you’ll do. But if you have a choice in the matter, your decision could have a big impact on your investment strategy. For example, if you want to retire early, you may need to save and invest more aggressively than you would if you plan to work well past typical retirement age. Also, your retirement date may well affect when you start accepting Social Security payments; if you retire early, you might have to start taking your benefits at age 62, even though your monthly checks will be considerably smaller than if you waited until your “full” retirement age, which is likely to be 66 or 67. • Retirement lifestyle – Some people want to spend their retirement years traveling from Athens to Zanzibar, while others simply want to stay close to home and family, pursuing quiet, inexpensive hobbies. Clearly, the lifestyle you choose will affect how much you need to accumulate before you retire and how much you will need to withdraw from your various investment accounts once you do. • Second career – Some people retire from one career only to begin another. If you

SandpointLivingLocal.com

22

think you’d like to have a “second act” in your working life, you might need some additional training, or you might just put your existing expertise to work as a consultant. If you do launch a new career, it could clearly affect your financial picture. For one thing, if you add a new source of earned income, you might be able to withdraw less from your retirement accounts each year. (Keep in mind, though, that once you reach 70 ½, you will have to take at least some withdrawals from your traditional IRA and your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan.) On the other hand, if you keep earning income, you can continue putting money into a traditional IRA (until you’re 70 ½) or a Roth IRA (indefinitely) and possibly contribute to a retirement plan for the self-employed, such as a SEP-IRA or an “owner-only” 401(k). • Philanthropy – During your working years, you may have consistently donated money to charitable organizations. And once you retire, you may want to do even more. For one thing, of course, you can volunteer more of your time. But you also might want to set up some more permanent method of financial support. Consequently, you might want to work with your legal advisor and financial professional to incorporate elements of your investment portfolio into your estate plans to provide more support for charitable groups. As you can see, your retirement goals can affect your investment strategy – and vice versa. So, think carefully about what you want to accomplish, plan ahead and get the help you need. It takes time and effort to achieve a successful retirement, but it’s worth it.

This longstanding veterinary hospital, across Highway 95 from Safeway, has been owned and operated by Dr. John Moody for all of these years. Relationships with clients and their pets become intensely close, and so the difficulty of how to continue the pace year after year, while also enjoying some of the fruits of life, can present an issue.

one roof means that pet owners can obtain a second, third and even a fourth opinion on a difficult case without leaving the facility. It also means that doctors can share on-call emergency shifts and expand available hours more easily. In addition, combining a clinic into a larger hospital cuts redundant costs. This allows for the purchase of technologically advanced equipment which, in turn, improves the quality of care. These are all very good reasons for making this move.

Moody has solved this problem by joining forces with another longstanding business in Sandpoint—North Idaho Animal Hospital. This event became official on September 5, 2017, when he and several members of his staff moved equipment and files to their new hospital on Highway 2, across from the Conoco Station (Dairy Depot) at 320 South Ella.

Anyone who has managed and worked in their own business realizes the most obvious advantage to a merger. Scheduling staff and clients, maintaining equipment and inventory, managing payroll and accounts payable and receivable is a never-ending cascade of tasks. This is now all handled by North Idaho Animal Hospital’s professional staff.

Mergers such as this have become as common in veterinary medicine as they are in human medical facilities. Combining more doctors under

from their profession. The relationships with clients and their pets holds too much power to simply quit. In addition, experience, as well as high-tech equipment, counts for a lot. Moody does not want an abrupt change. He does, however, desire more time to travel with wife Ginny and less time managing a business. These goals have been accomplished, and our community will continue to benefit from his kindness and compassion. North Idaho Animal Hospital is thrilled to have him join their staff.

THAT PERFECT PUMPKIN Find it at Hickey Farms. By Colin Anderson

YOU CAN GO THE EASY ROUTE when choosing this year’s Halloween pumpkins by simply grabbing a couple along with the rest of your weekly groceries, but where’s the fun in that? If you’re looking to get in the Halloween spirit and looking for that perfect pumpkin, you’re sure to find both at Hickey Farms.

pumpkin—or pumpkins—for carving, but plenty of snacks, drinks and entertainment as well. Check with Hickey Farms’ Facebook page before you go to see what’s happening on the day you plan to pick. Over the years, there has been everything from square-dance lessons and live music, to art classes and wagon rides for the kids.

Opened in 1955, this family run farm just east of Sandpoint has been inviting guests to the property so they can pick that perfect pumpkin right from the field. You’ll find rows and rows of beautiful orange pumpkins, and whether you’re looking for tiny, massive, tall, slender or fat, you’ll eventually spot the one that’s just right. Your kids will love venturing out into the fields and getting their hands dirty searching for that special gourd that will be carved into something spooky or silly.

From Sandpoint, the farm is easy to find. Just take Highway 200 east about 6 miles, turn left onto Hickey Road and follow the signs for parking. All families are welcome, and those who aren’t able to traverse the fields can also pick out their pumpkins from a bin that Hickey Farms has already harvested.

The community is invited to stop by the farm Friday afternoons and most of the day on Saturdays and Sundays to take part in the pumpkin picks. The farm is open until dusk on these days. You’ll not only find that ideal

DIAGNOSIS BRINGS BLESSINGS

LOCAL CANCER PATIENT GRATEFUL FOR COMMUNITY SUPPORT

“I was not going to let this get me down,” said Dani, whose faith never wavered. “God is in everything. If I had seen it any other way, I would have been in a deep depression.”

THEY ARE THREE WORDS that can turn a person’s world upside down. “You have cancer.” For Sandpoint resident Dani Deschanel, they were the last words she had expected to hear. After all, she did not have any symptoms that would lead her to believe she had a life-threatening illness. Dani had been off work as a checker at Super 1 Foods for a few months awaiting approval for carpal tunnel surgery. “I was still in the diagnostic stage [for carpal tunnel]. They did a lot of different scans and in those scans they found something suspicious, which turned out to be endometrial cancer,” said Dani. Difficult to diagnose in the early stages, it was nothing short of a miracle that Dani’s cancer turned out to be stage 1. Although when she was first told of the diagnosis, it was not yet known if the cancer had spread. It was a frightening time.

“It was just before my 44th birthday,” said Dani. “It brings to light your mortality. Material things did not matter much anymore.” Dani learned of her diagnosis shortly before Christmas in 2015, but she waited until after the holidays to share the news with her two sons, ages 18 and 21 at the time. She had a hysterectomy, and the surgeon also removed seven of her lymph nodes to determine if the cancer had spread. While the good news is she no longer has any sign of cancer in her body, the removal of so many lymph nodes caused Dani to suffer from lymphedema in her leg—an issue she will have to deal with the rest of her life. Lymphedema is a condition that occurs when the lymphatic system’s ability to transport fluid is impaired. Fluid, cells and protein accumulate in the tissues resulting in an area of swelling. Symptoms include inflammation, swelling,

discomfort and a full and heavy feeling. But for anyone who knows Dani, and many do as she won the Best Grocery Store Checker in Bonner County for three years in a row during her time with Super 1, they know that her bright smile and dimples continued to shine even through her struggles. “I was not going to let this get me down,” said Dani, whose faith never wavered. “God is in everything. If I had seen it any other way, I would have been in a deep depression.” Prior to her cancer diagnosis, Dani was very active. She enjoyed running, hiking, swimming and biking. Today, she has learned a new way of doing the things she enjoyed. “It’s my life before cancer and after cancer,” she said.

She now does a light jog and will hike along small trails instead of the more challenging ones she previously conquered. “I feel a constant heaviness in my leg and often feel lopsided and unbalanced,” shared Dani. “In the beginning, I tried to do too much. practices with Laurie Ottenbreit, MSPT. Both women work for Performance Therapy Services, which is affiliated with Bonner General Health.

One thing that Dani wants to share with the rest of the community is that for anyone going through something like this, there is help available—and it does not mean one has to travel out of town to get it. Yes, the reality is that you really don’t know about specific resources until you need them, but when Dani needed them they proved invaluable.

Physical therapy treatments for lymphedema include manual lymphatic drainage, multi-component bandaging, measurement and fitting of a compression garment and instruction on appropriate exercises and self-management. With proper management, therapists such as Laurie Myers and Laurie Ottenbreit can help control swelling and loss of function in the area affected by lymphedema.

She is especially grateful for the ongoing care she received from two women who specialize in lymphedema massage therapy: Laurie Myers, who has her master’s degree in Physical Therapy and specializes in lymphedema and

Dani said she is also thankful for the assistance she received from Community Cancer Services, a local nonprofit that provides financial and emotional support for cancer patients and their families. “I

wanted and needed an independent person to talk to who understood the emotional aspects of what I was going through,” said Dani. She cites one-on-one counseling and the yoga classes offered through Community Cancer Services as particularly helpful. Another important person in Dani’s journey was Susie Majeski, LCSW, ACADC, LCCC. Majeski is a faith-based therapist who provided Dani with the spiritual support as well as clinical support that she says was instrumental in dealing with her cancer.

are never alone,” she said, adding that in the beginning she did not tell anyone, and it was a decision she later regretted. In the end, Dani said one important thing this journey has taught her is that she is much stronger than she thought she was. As she continues to receive treatment for her lymphedema, a lifelong affliction, she hopes she can be a light for others who travel the same journey and guide them to the help and resources that she found so helpful.

It was Dani’s experience that at the initial meetings with medical providers there was not enough information presented to her about the road ahead of her with her diagnosis. She encourages people to always take another person to appointments to help take notes, ask questions and be a patient advocate. “Make sure you take someone who is positive. And don’t take the whole family; just have one person. And remember, you

TOWN SUPPORTING RURAL TOWNS

By Jani Gonzalez

Livability Opportunity Responsibility Foundation helps Greater Sandpoint Area preserve quality of life and maintain its livability. RURAL SMALL TOWNS ARE OFTEN home to idyllic landscapes and are stewards to their surroundings. What’s always at stake is their ability to preserve or improve the quality of life there. And, their needs vary from those of more urban areas based on their size, geography and the layout of public and private lands that surround them. “Rural communities are facing unique challenges as their demographics and economics change with the world,” said Jeremy Grimm, Livability Opportunity Responsibility (LOR) Foundation’s newest program officer, located in Sandpoint. “Often, rural communities are not prepared or don’t have the resources to adapt to the changes they are facing, and sometimes, the livability of a place is degraded or jeopardized due to growth. Locally, this might take the form of more limited access to the lake or national forest

due to development, despite the proximity of these public places.” The board members of the LOR Foundation recognized the unique challenges that so many small towns are experiencing and made it their mission to support community-driven solutions in small towns across the Intermountain West. The foundation, headquartered in Jackson, Wyoming, was formed back in 2007 by wife and husband, Amy Wyss and Ed Jaramillo. Since then, they have been expanding LOR’s reach in the vicinities of Taos, New Mexico; San Luis Valley, Colorado; select towns in Montana and the Greater Sandpoint Area. LOR handpicked each town for their existing community involvement. “LOR looks for areas with strong social capital and with organizations who

want to work together. The Sandpoint area was a natural fit with more than 100 nonprofits in the Greater Sandpoint Area to work with,” Grimm said. He oversees the communities of Dover, Ponderay and Kootenai. Over the summer, LOR announced the distribution of $1.5 million in grants to 15 rural communities and partners, including Kaniksu Land Trust Sandpoint. Each partner received $100,000 for various projects submitted typically involving water conservation, access to public lands and recreation. “In Sandpoint, as we grow and see an influx of new residents, what will become of and how will growth impact the livability of this place? These are questions and issues we care about. We’re here to listen to local government and residents and seek ways to help find solutions to pressing challenges,” Grimm said. Keeping the pulse of rural communities going LOR representatives like Grimm are the eyes and ears of the Foundation in their respective communities. While the needs of every rural community

SandpointLivingLocal.com

are different, LOR focuses on supporting a broad array of efforts that address livability, such as environmental conservation and recreational access to the natural surroundings, resilient economies and local capacity to address similar issues. They support initiatives for clean water, ranging from insightful development, storm-water contamination, invasive species, reducing pollution and how to respond to threats such as wildfires and train derailment disasters. They then work with organizations dealing with these issues by providing technical expertise or finding subject matter experts, studies, public relations or providing direct financial assistance. LOR has previously been involved in recreational projects such as the Friends of the Pend d’Oreille Bay Trail and their effort to acquire more than 1.5 miles of shoreline land between Sandpoint and Ponderay. They’ve also been involved with the Ponderay Neighbor Day event which helps to build community spirit. They are also assisting the City of Sandpoint with a storm-water improvement design at Farmins Landing and are working with the Pend Oreille Pedalers to enhance area bike trails.

LOR is helping the Kaniksu Land Trust acquire the Pine Street Woods, a 200-acre plot of community forest west of Sandpoint using a $600,000 grant it awarded the group. In Ponderay, they assisted the city in acquiring the 6-acre Harbison property, which the town hopes will serve as an access point for a future railroad underpass connection to the Bay Trail. Other projects with LOR include the Clagstone Meadows Conservation Project, which resulted in permanent access through a conservation easement on over 13,000 acres of Stimson Lumber Company land in southern Bonner County. “LOR works differently than many philanthropic foundations,” Grimm said. “We desire to have genuine partnerships and ongoing relationships at the local level and as a result, strive to have the Foundation’s resources put directly into local communities rather than focusing on large national efforts.” In listening mode LOR gets involved in community improvement projects by first listening as opposed to imposing their views on how rural towns should carry out their goals. “Right now, I’m in listening mode to understand the issues the community is dealing with—

clean water, community design—anything that focuses on a community’s livability to maintain the quality of life people have historically enjoyed,” Grimm said. “We’re not a top-down foundation that dictates the way things should happen. We’re here to listen and help the needs the community has.” Once specific issues are identified, LOR assists organizations through funding, manpower or providing expertise. However, organizations don’t have to wait to be noticed. LOR is open to proposals. Every quarter, the board reviews opportunities and how their resources may best serve the communities where they are currently active. Assistance may come in the form of studies or bringing on board experts who will facilitate the means to achieve a goal. Every community has different goals too—some focus on recreational projects, others on the environment and conservation, and some on economic resiliency. “Anyone can propose a project or notify us of a challenge they are facing. We’ll work with any issue regarding livability, which might include exploring ways to develop a recreation center, supporting an arts community or helping seniors,” Grimm explained. “The Foundation feels that the livability of these small towns shouldn’t just be for the privileged but should be for a broad spectrum of people who shouldn’t be negatively impacted by change brought about by

SandpointLivingLocal.com

growth, or have their quality of life degraded.” Rural communities, particularly tourist-centric ones, are at risk for losing their identity and diversity as they attract new residents. A town’s identity adds to the quality of life it provides for a diverse population. The towns of Vail and Aspen, Colorado, for instance, have become elite, exclusive destinations that might have become more inclusive and maintained their authenticity had they been more thoughtful and inclusive during their transformations. “A community can lose its identity and authenticity, and by then, it’s too late,” Grimm said. “We want to work with lots of partners to address issues before it’s too late.” LOR identifies where they can support communities, eventually stepping away from the issues once initial hurdles are resolved. There’s no set date for moving out of the Greater Sandpoint Area until they have identified where and how they can support the community and see that it has a greater capacity for organization and self-support. As Grimm said, “The goal is to work in a community for a time and leave it with a positive momentum.” For more information about the Foundation, visit LORFoundation.org.

A JUNIOR at Sandpoint High School, Grace Hicks has been a starter on both the varsity volleyball and basketball teams since freshman year. She has received many awards including the Inland Empire League’s (IEL) Newcomer of the Year her freshman year for basketball and was named to the IEL allleague team for volleyball. While Grace plays both sports, she said it is volleyball that she enjoys the most. Earlier this year she played on a club team, Kootenai Elite Volleyball Academy, which is a team combined of the top volleyball players in North Idaho and Spokane. “We ended our season at a tournament in Florida, and AAU Nationals ranked us 33rd,” said Grace, who plans to play volleyball at the collegiate level, hopefully for a Division 1 school where she would like to major in business.

“I have always been really good with numbers and interacting with people,” said Grace. “I believe this will be the best area of work where I will always be on my toes.” Her SHS coach, Erin Roos, has witnessed Grace’s dedication. “She’s a hard worker, talented athlete and natural leader,” said Roos. There are many things Grace has learned from being involved in athletics, but she said the one lesson that stands out in her mind is that there truly is no “I” in team. “You always are dependent on someone to boost you up when you are feeling down or need someone to listen and talk things through. I definitely believe you need a person to be your clutch, a person you can always go to. This just makes the real world a little more bearable.”

COLE DILLON: SENIOR COLE DILLON is a three-year varsity athlete who has started for two state teams—one his sophomore year and one junior year. A member of Sandpoint High School’s cross-country team, Cole placed third on the team his sophomore year and 39th overall. Last year as a junior he placed first on the team and 28th overall. You will want to stay tuned for this year, as we are part way into the season, and it is looking promising for both boys’ and girls’ crosscountry teams. “I love the team aspect of the sport,” said Cole. “I love how we all face the exact same courses, and we help each other through them.” Cole shared that one of his continuing challenges as a runner is his form. “I am better than I was but still struggle in the form department,” he said. his coach, Matt Brass, with working with him to improve. As is evidenced by his performance, Cole appears to have overcome that challenge! He plans to attend the University of Idaho where he will study computer science with the goal of a career as a software engineer. “I am interested in this because of the type of math involved and the mode of thinking used,” Cole said. He hopes to run at the UI as a walk-on for cross country and track, “but trying to walk on is always a risk in the sense of getting on the team,” Cole said. One lesson Cole will take with him as he continues onto the next chapter in life is one he learned from both of his coaches, Matt and Angie Brass. “Never settle for being less than what you could be.”

FORMER SHS STUDENTS FIND A CAREER AT LPOSD Giving back to the place they call home

Jeralyn Mire, SHS’s post secondary transition counselor, worked in Los Angeles, Arizona and Spokane before returning to her hometown in 1994. “I could not be happier, but I am also very happy I went away and experienced other things,” she said.

IF YOU HAVE LIVED IN SANDPOINT for any length of time, you know there is simply no other place like it. The beauty, the friendliness of the people and the true sense of community are just a few reasons people choose to call this town home. volleyball, Erin teaches the mentoring program, Real Life101 and 301 and Happy on Purpose. She traveled around the U.S. playing college volleyball, and it was then that she discovered that Sandpoint was where she wanted to live. “This community, the SHS staff and my coaches were all integral in becoming the person I am today. I’m extremely grateful and I’m paying it forward,” said Erin. One of the newer teachers at SHS is Kevin Hutchens. A 2012 graduate of SHS, Kevin graduated from the University of Idaho in 2016. He taught for a year in Minnesota before returning to Sandpoint to teach business and marketing courses this year, something he has known he wanted to do since he was in the 10th grade. “I wanted to come back to Sandpoint because of how great this community is. Even when I was a little kid growing up, I knew the love around the community here was unique, and I wanted to come back and be a part of that,” said Kevin. Having experienced one year at a small school district in the Midwest gives him an even greater appreciation of the administration and staff in our district; something not always visible when one is a student.

“Everyone throughout the district has been so welcoming. They are not only willing to help and answer my questions but also seek out ways to help make me a better teacher,” said Kevin. “It’s that kind of support system that makes coming to work every day incredible.” Kendall Stratton also graduated in 2012 and returned to work at SHS this year. She attended college in Oregon, but in her heart she always knew she would end up back in Sandpoint. “I cannot imagine living anywhere else in the world,” said Kendall. “This place is truly one of a kind.” Kendall is in the post secondary counseling department and is working on her master’s degree in counseling education. “Our school district is an amazing one,” said Kendall, adding that she is enjoying getting to know her former teachers as coworkers. “The people and the sense of family and community radiates throughout this town,” she said. “There

is endless support no matter what you do or where you go. Dalton Hawkins, a 2009 graduate of SHS, also returned to his alma mater this year and teaches Algebra 1 and Algebra 2. His last teaching job was on the western side of Alaska in the bush, where the number of students in his classroom was never more than 12 and the school had only 22 students. “I always knew I would end up back in Sandpoint, however, I thought I would be gone for a longer period of time before coming back,” said Dalton. “I have deep roots in the community. That was a big factor [in returning here]. Also, after my time in remote Alaska, I was ready for some civilization.” In addition to teaching, Dalton is helping coach the cross-country team with his former coaches, Matt and Angie Brass. “It’s been amazing for me as I’ve been able to work with some of my students outside of the classroom,” he said. “I’ve always believed that getting interaction with students outside the school setting creates a stronger student.” Malia Meschko is a 1982 graduate of SHS and has been with LPOSD since 1994 and teaches computer aided design (CAD). She knew that wherever she settled, she wanted to have a ski

hill and a lake. “I had traveled across the U.S. with family and had a lot of understanding of areas I did not want to settle in,” said Malia. Malia shares that she appreciates the fact that LPOSD is progressing with not only technology but is also trying to eliminate the “trendy” methods and curriculum while focusing on what is best for kids and how kids learn best. “[The focus is on] how can we get them to love learning and become successful citizens,” she said. Will Love returned to teach in his hometown of Sandpoint nine years ago and teaches journalism technology. It was not the path he thought his career would take him, but he is extremely grateful it did. As an assistant sports editor in the Treasure Valley, he did not think returning to Sandpoint was an option. After he learned of the journalism job at SHS, he spoke with his wife and decided to apply. “I know it can be hard for young people to make a career in Sandpoint. Debbie and I are really lucky that it has worked out so well,” said Will. Will shared that LPOSD is unique in the many opportunities available to students, including the electives, the AP classes and the dual-credit classes. “This, among other things, provides students, who are willing to put in the work, a great education and experience,” he said. “In

addition, LPOSD has embraced technology. It has really enhanced my abilities as an educator and offered tremendous opportunities for students.” Brian Smith teaches American Government and is a 1995 graduate of SHS. His wife is also a teacher in the district, and after going to other places, they knew Sandpoint was where they really wanted to be. “It was a chance to make a meaningful contribution to the community I love. The people here are dedicated professionals who sincerely want to make a difference in the lives of children,” said Brian, who adds that the way the community supports the students and athletes is just one thing that makes LPOSD so exceptional. SHS Principal Tom Albertson, a 1982 graduate of Sandpoint High School, shared that at the high school alone there are approximately 27 teachers or staff who are graduates of the school where they now work; and that does not include many more throughout the district. “Sandpoint is a nice place to live, and people like to come back when an opportunity arises,” said Tom. “Sandpoint held a special place in their heart, and they feel vested into the youth of our community and want to give back to students the experience received by them.”

A Sandpoint to Bonners Ferry

Connection

Carter Country Farm and Feed & EzyDog BY JILLIAN CHANDLER

48

CARTER COUNTRY FARM AND FEED has been a staple in the Bonners Ferry community for the past three years, with their original Sandpoint location standing strong for the past 18 years. Owner Charlie Carter has created not just one but two locations for customers to find everything they need for their animals' health and wellness, plus so much more! Charlie has lived in North Idaho for the past 25 years. He was initially attracted to the area because of its natural beauty and the opportunity for economic growth. “I soon was attracted to the independent nature of the citizens of the community and their selfreliance and naturally helpful attitude,” he says. “This has been a great place to live and to do business.” Located on Main Street, customers will find everything including pet and farm feed and supplies, animal health supplies and products, fencing, hardware and garden supplies at Carter Country. They are also retailers for EzyDog and were the first retailers in North America to offer EzyDog products; a line of active dog gear encompassing the rugged outdoor lifestyle dogs love. According to Charlie, “Their products have enriched our offerings, and they are [wonderful] folks to deal with. We've enjoyed this association with fellow local small-business people.” Sandpoint residents John and Alana Hatcher opened EzyDog, which manufactures and distributes products for dogs—everything from leashes, collars and harnesses to backpacks, floatation vests and jackets—in 2003. “From day one, we have focused on the active lifestyle of people and their dogs. Whether out for a hike, run or the water with your dog, or traveling somewhere to spend time with your dog, we offer solution-based products to enhance the dog/guardian experience,” says John. “Our products are built with several

materials used by the outdoor industries’ elite, particularly competitors in water sports— people and dogs alike.” The couple relocated to Sandpoint in 2001 “for the love of the area, first and foremost,” says John. “Within a very short amount of time, our dogs approved as well.” Like Charlie, it is vital to John and Alana to ensure the customer is happy with their purchase, striving to make sure that their customers are getting a superior product at a good value. John and Alana’s love of animals doesn’t just involve EzyDog. John has been on the Board of Directors of the Panhandle Animal Shelter since 2013, and he and his wife are active volunteers. “We also have committed to make sure that every dog at the shelter leaves with a brand new collar just to make sure they start off on the right paw!” says John. Carter Country has set itself apart from other similar stores in that it offers a unique shopping experience for pet lovers, 4-H and FFA members and their families, as well as for farmers and ranchers. It is important to Charlie and his staff that they show personal attention to each customer’s specific needs and offer informed suggestions to meet these needs. “I enjoy getting to know members of the community and working closely with them and their families,” says Charlie. “Working with the 4-H and FFA members to help them with their projects is particularly rewarding. It's such a joy to watch them show their animals at the fair and to be able to bid on some of their animals.” With not only one but two successful businesses, Charlie attributes this success to his entire staff and their training in product knowledge and animal health, which leads to great customer service. “Our staff knows how to answer customers' questions and help

them find solutions for their pet, farm animal, gardening, fencing and hardware needs,” says Charlie. “We treat each customer like the special person they are, with a friendly smile, as we listen first and then make suggestions to solve their problems and meet their needs.” Carter Country Farm and Feed and EzyDog are businesses both passionate about animals and their people. “Animals are the core reason we exist, and helping their people take care of them is fundamental,” says Charlie.

We Are What We Do Every Day By Susan Moore, Owner, Better Gym & Better Eats, Gig Harbor

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD THE SAYING “You can’t out train a bad diet?” If you spend any time with me, you’ve heard it a time or 12. If we aren’t mindful of our diet, all the good work we do at the gym or outside could be hidden by our lack of caloric or nutritional accountability. But really, for true wellness, it goes much deeper than what you do or don’t eat. It’s about little and big details of your daily life from how you walk to how you sleep, sit or even communicate. If there is something in your life you don’t like, this is a great time to look at what you can do to help yourself. Change a daily habit and you just might change your life.

the weight of the world you carry on your shoulders? In our current American culture, most back and neck pain can be summed up by one common flaw that most of us have. Bad posture. Can’t deny it, can you? You probably also think I’m wrong, but I’m most likely not. Not just your sitting posture but your standing posture, computer posture, studying posture, work posture, getting dressed posture, eating posture, on-thephone posture, on-the-potty posture, texting posture … I could go on forever. Many modern-day conveniences have led to aches and pains. Seems counterintuitive to try and make life easier and end up unhealthy. The old adage about there not being any real shortcuts seems to always ring true.

Do you have back pain and never had an injury that can take credit for it? Or constant neck pain that your friends and family say is from

Really, for true wellness, it goes much deeper than what you do or don’t eat. It’s about little and big details of your daily life from how you walk to how you sleep, sit or even communicate. The most prevalent pain I hear about is low back pain. As a physical trainer it is out of my scope to diagnose, so once we have been cleared by medical I ask my clients to do a couple of simple tasks. I might ask them to pretend to tie their shoe, pick something up off the floor or sit on the floor and stand back up again. It is immediately evident if their daily postural habits could be a contributing factor in their pain. Just because a movement doesn’t hurt at the time doesn’t mean it isn’t causing a problem. If you continuously round your back during daily activities, it isn’t if, but when, will the back pain begin. This doesn’t mean that all back pain is caused by poor posture, but I have never seen a case where daily compression of the lumbar spine hasn’t made whatever is going on worse. The easiest fix is to learn the hip hinge; to get your hands to or closer to the floor, reach toward your toes (being mindful not to round your back) and get your rear end out of the way. These are literally the most common cues to deadlift a barbell, which is a form of

powerlifting. If you have unexplained low back pain, try not rounding your back for a week and see what happens. Another pain that can usually be prevented is upper-back or thoracic pain. Again, it could be from a number of problems, but once your doctor has told you they don’t see any reason for you to be in pain, check your communication habits. Do you cradle your phone between your shoulder and head? Do you look down to text or to just look at your phone all day? Or do you have a job in front of the computer and are sitting all day? The answers to fixing these problems really are found in the questions themselves. Don’t have your phone lower than eye level, don’t keep it between your shoulder and ear and, for the love of all that is holy, stand up every so often and sit without slouching! With the new year around the corner, how about you keep this year simple. Change a habit a month. It could be to eat a vegetable at every meal, stop texting while driving, eating and/or walking, or getting eight hours of sleep each night. Because if you don’t start paying attention to what you do most of the day, the 4 percent of your day you spend in the gym won’t prevent you from having pain. You have the ability to be your own advocate. We only get one body in this life, take care of it!

FITNESS SHOULD BE FUN WHAT MAKES A FITNESS PLAN GOOD? BY KENNY MARKWARDT, OWNER, CROSSFIT SANDPOINT

Your Goals Are Our Priority! AT THIS POINT, I think we’re all in agreement that there are a host of good reasons to exercise often: Physically, it’s great for your body composition, bones, joints and ligaments. Perhaps most importantly, it’ll help your opinion of yourself in the nude. Mentally, it’s awesome for stress relief, mood enhancement and getting your mind off of the people in your life who drive you crazy. Emotionally, it’s wonderful for experiencing the inevitable ups and downs of the expression of movement. Overcoming challenges in fitness will help you do so in daily life as well. So, if those are all valid points, which type of exercise is best? This is where it can get tricky. In this day and age, you’ve got so many options for fitness it can make you dizzy. The vast array of gyms, classes, coaches (trainers usually work with animals, by the way) and outdoor options make it so you could spend the rest of your days sampling 30 days of each until you find a good fit. So what makes a fitness plan “good”? Honestly, I could spend hours designing the most fundamentally perfect exercise program for you, taking into consideration your age, sex, experience, goals, aspirations, imbalances, history, etc., but if you don’t do it, it’s not going to work. On the flip side, if you find something that you sincerely look forward to doing, it will, even if it’s not exactly perfect. Now, fun for someone doesn’t always mean fun for another. Some people get a charge out of being electrocuted while crawling through

the mud with thousands of strangers, while others from dancing their hearts out for an hour at a time. Some prefer weights. Others enjoy running. Some prefer the camaraderie and social aspects of being in a gym while others abhor the gym and stay fit by doing things that don’t even look like exercise at all.

Sandpoint’s Only Full Size Warm Water Therapy Pool

So, with all of these options to explore, how do you sort them out to find out what you like? I highly recommend experimenting with as many as you can until you figure out what you like! Do 30 days at a time (or more) of something until the 31st day happens without effort and you genuinely look forward to going (or at least the feeling you get when you finish). As an aside, just because you stop one and start another doesn’t mean you’re a quitter; it just means you haven’t found the right fit for you—yet. So, get out there, play, have fun, accidentally exercise and see what happens! Kenny Markwardt, CSCS has been coaching others in fitness and nutrition for more than 15 years His mission is to inspire others to find levels of potential they didn’t know existed. He and his wife Jenn own CrossFit Sandpoint and The Markwardt Method.

BREAST CANCER SCREENING WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

BY BONNER GENERAL HEALTH E TTAI -PT A S H SEAAVLETTHH Y

DURING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, many women question if they should be getting annual mammograms. Several controversial articles have been in the news lately about the pros and cons for annual breast-cancer screenings and if mammograms are even safe. The most important thing for women (and men) is to know their family and personal health history and to be proactive in their health care. Women who have a family history of even one family member testing positive for the BRCA genes, or having breast cancer, ovarian cancer and even peritoneal (lining of the abdominal cavity) cancer has an increased risk of developing breast cancer. The risk of developing breast cancer also increases for anyone who had radiation of their chest between the ages of 10 and 30. Women with any of the mentioned risk factors should start having mammograms no later than age 40, possibly sooner, and should talk to their health-care provider for their recommendation based on their individual risks. Women who do not have any contributing risk factors are considered to be at an average risk for developing breast cancer, which is a 12.4 percent risk over their lifetime. These women should consider starting to get mammograms no later than age 45, as recommended by the American Cancer Society, and should continue

to have yearly mammograms until age 55. After age 55, women can talk to their healthcare providers about their individual risk factors and at this time possibly start having mammograms every other year. One misconception people often have is that mammograms are unsafe due to the radiation exposure, and they feel the radiation itself can cause cancer. The radiation exposure in a mammogram is less than in a traditional x-ray. People are exposed to radiation every day in their natural surroundings. The radiation exposure from a mammogram is about 13 percent of the radiation an average person is naturally exposed to over one year. Studies show the benefits of yearly mammograms for women starting at age 40 are much better than the risks of having mammograms, because often times when breast cancer is discovered from other screening methods it is at an advanced stage. 3-D Mammography is the latest technology available in breast-cancer screening, and it is available in the Sandpoint area only at Bonner General Health’s Women’s Imaging Center. Advantages of 3-D Mammography over 2-D Mammography: • Detects 40 percent more invasive cancers than 2-D mammography

SandpointLivingLocal.com

56

• Exams use virtually the same radiation dose as 2-D mammography • Images are taken from different angles than a traditional 2-D mammogram, allowing doctors to examine breast tissue one layer at a time • Is proven to be the most superior screening for breast cancer • Results in up to 40 percent fewer callbacks for rescreening The most important thing to remember is to be proactive in your own health care. Monthly self-breast exams are still recommended, and if you notice any changes in either breast, it is more important to see your health-care provider for evaluation than think to yourself, “I don’t have the typical risk factors,” because more and more newly diagnosed breast-cancer patients have no risk factors. SEASONAL ACTIVITIES FOR A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

By Lindy Petersen

MAINTAINING A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE is not a seasonal activity. It’s something that we strive to do year round. Getting in shape and staying in shape should be easy to do no matter what time of year it is. Maintaining a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle can be challenging, but we all know the rewards are endless. Seasonal activities can be planned ahead of time or can be spontaneous adventures; the choice is yours.

Starting a garden is rewarding all year long. Being outside, caring for your plants and reaping the rewards at harvest time are all benefits of one of the healthiest activities you can learn. Gardening or farming is truly a lifestyle that will benefit your physical health. Being able to share your gardening skills is also a great way to stay active in your community. Why not join your local gardening club, or even start one of your own?

Wherever you might live, there are unlimited options for getting out and enjoying a productive and healthy life. Here are some activities listed by season that will get you out and moving all year long!

Personally, spring is my favorite time of year to travel. The crowds have yet to appear, the weather is almost always perfect, and the prices are often very reasonable. Trekking up a mountain, lounging on a beach, rafting on the Colorado River and deep-ocean sports fishing are all things that are perfect activities for your next springtime vacation.

Spring Spring is a glorious time of year. Gone are the icy days of winter, and the explosion of color from fresh blossoms can be found everywhere! For those who take the time to notice, baby animals are being born all over the world in the springtime. Hiking is an excellent way to see wildlife as well as the newly blooming flora. National or state parks are wonderful places to go hiking, but if you live near the coast, don’t just settle for long walks on the beach! Coastal hills and bluffs can provide a more challenging hike as well as stunning ocean views! If you crave a little more adventure, then camping might be the activity for you! Camping is a favorite way to really connect with nature again after those long cold months spent mostly indoors. The mild temperatures at this time of year will make almost any activity possible! Take the whole family and go “glamping” in a cabin, opt for a solo adventure with dispersed camping on BLM land, or choose anything in between, depending on your tastes and budget.

Summer Summer is, of course, famous for family vacations. Children are out of school, and most people choose to take advantage of the hot weather to indulge in water sports. Boating isn’t just for the wealthy and adventurous. Whether you’re fishing or water skiing, boating has been a favorite summer activity for generations. Boats are usually available to rent by the hour or the day at any marina. Other seasonal activities that will also let you beat the heat in the water are scuba diving, snorkeling, cliff-diving and river-rafting. If you think you’d enjoy an outdoor yoga session, try renting a stand-up paddle board (SUP) and finding a nice calm lake or bay! If you’re planning a vacation, the Colorado River has long been a favorite summertime destination. Water-skiers and Jet-skiers dash across the river while sun bathers relax in

floating inner-tubes. Nearby Lake Havasu has a giant hedge maze that most people take hours to find their way out of, offering a nice long walk! Kayaking can be relaxing or can be an adrenaline rush, depending on where you decide to do it. If you live near a large body of water or a river, it’s financially advantageous to buy your own kayak. But if you prefer, kayaks can be rented for a reasonable price, usually by the hour. Double kayaks have become quite popular with couples, and kayaking on a still lake at dusk is one of the most romantic things I can imagine doing. If water sports aren’t your thing, these warmweather months are also great for visiting local farms and farmers markets. Wander up and down rows of vine-ripened berries or through an avocado orchard. Many farms have a “pickyour-own” special, allowing you to spend a day outdoors and gather your own fresh fruits and vegetables, many times at a fraction of what

they might cost in the store. This activity is one you may want to share with friends and family. Outdoor cooking is always a summertime favorite. The variety of local produce during these months makes experimenting with healthy recipes easy. Building an outdoor oven isn’t just a great way to stay out of a hot kitchen but can be a focal point for a social gathering. Detailed instructions for building an outdoor kitchen of any sort are readily available online. There are many great recipes for healthy breads and pizzas, stews and paleo foods–whatever your preferences, outdoor cooking is a healthy and wonderfully social activity. Summertime is also prime music and movie festival time! Try volunteering to help with setup at your local festivals. It’s hard work, a great workout, and you may even get free tickets to the event!

Autumn As the seasons change and the holidays sneak up on us, many people begin to focus on family gatherings and company parties. Of course, this also means focusing on food and drink. While this is a wonderful time of year, it’s important to not let your active lifestyle suffer. You can enjoy the changing of the seasons outdoors as well as indoors. Walking burns more calories than you might think and is an amazing way to really take in the fall colors. Set a goal of walking at least one hour every day during the autumn months, and you won’t have to worry about those company parties adding inches to your waistline!

04

While many people might not consider stargazing to be an activity, sometimes getting to the best stargazing spots can be! Finding an out-of-the-way place, away from city lights, can be challenging and fun. After a day spent searching for the perfect spot at the top of a mountain, you’ll be more than happy to relax and watch for a shooting star, spot your favorite constellation or just quietly gaze at the stunning Milky Way Galaxy. Fall is apple-harvesting time! Many communities with apple orchards have harvest festivals and cider or pie contests! While Washington state is famous for its fall harvests, if you’re near California, try the towns of Ojai

or Julian. Each October brings bushels of apples and tons of activities surrounding the orchards. Winter The long, cold nights and chilly, sometimes snowy days, make outdoor activities seem less appealing to some during the winter months. Don’t let the cold weather stall your active lifestyle! There are more things to do outdoors at this time of year than you might realize. If you don’t already live near an area laden with snow, plan a trip to Lake Tahoe or Aspen, or any nearby mountain! If you have never been cross-country skiing, there are lessons

available almost anywhere where there’s snow. Cross-country skiing is a great cardio workout, and you don’t even have to buy a lift pass! It can be a great way to explore a new area, too! For a little more adrenaline in your life, try sledding or snowmobiling. Sledding can be an all-day family activity, and snowmobiling can get you to your favorite ice-fishing hole! Why not give both a try? If you live in a really cold area, you can try the Polar Bear Challenge, where people run to a body of water (usually a lake) and jump in! Just a quick dunk is said to be invigorating to the body and the spirit! Don’t forget to have someone film your jump; the Internet is just wild for these amazing

videos. There are Polar Bear Clubs popping up all over the world! From ice skating at your local rink, to building a snowman with the kids, snowy days are a great chance to get out and be active. You’ll appreciate the hot chocolate by a roaring fire in the evening. If you’re just not a fan of the snow or cold weather, try joining a gym with an indoor pool or rock-climbing wall. You can also take a hot yoga class to warm your core. Alternatively, you can maintain your active lifestyle right from home! Organizing your closet, performing any home repairs you might have been putting off,

cleaning out your garage—these are all things that will keep you moving while getting some chores out of the way so that when better weather rolls around, you’ll be ready to get out there and make the most of it! This is a great time of year to learn a new skill: canning, knitting, sewing, woodworking or learning to make stained-glass window ornaments. You can make your own personalized gifts for the holidays or just become a little more self-sufficient. Indoor activities are all around, and staying active is as easy as watching a few videos and shopping for some supplies.

Sharing activities year round and staying socially active is vitally important to maintaining emotional health. Now, no matter what time of year it might be, get out there and do something fun!

INTERVIEWS WITH THE PROFESSIONALS By Patty Hutchens Have you ever been interested in what one’s typical day looks like in a given profession? Perhaps you thought you may want to go into medicine, or maybe opening your own retail shop appeals to you. Having a passion for what you do will not only assist you in being successful, but it will mean the difference between being happy to go to work or dreading that morning alarm clock. We asked some people in our community to share with us about their chosen profession. Here is what some of our local business people had to say.

Furniture For Life Mike Gunter Marketing Director/Owner Sandpoint Furniture/Carpet One SandpointFurniture.com To be an effective marketer for my business, there are several things that must be taken into consideration on a daily basis. • First, understand who your customer is and which medias will best reach them. • Understand what is “relevant” to your customer. What are his\her “hot buttons” and what might motivate them. • What is your brand? Who are you? What goods and services do you provide? Where are you? • Learn to see your marketing efforts through the eyes of your customer, not through your own eyes. • Understand that a “bad” ad costs just as much as a good ad. • Build a partnership with your media vendors and see your marketing as an “investment” and not an expense. • Become a student of the marketing game … nobody else speaks the language of your business like you do! • Remember … your success depends on it.

Entertainment Lenny Hess Owner 7B TV 7BTV.com

As we go through life, we sometimes stumble across what I would term “Golden Nuggets.” When I first started out in this business that I chose, I was speaking to another local businessman about all of the mailers and telemarketers that flood the area with competitors’ promises of greener pastures. This wise sage said to me, “Don’t worry about the competition, be the competition.” I liked the sound of that and ran with it, and I believe that has been part of our success here at 7BTV. Another time early on, an older woman came in the store, and I was telling her all about the equipment, remote control, ease of use, and she said, “I just want to watch Lucy.” I realized then that I am not selling “boxes”; I am selling entertainment.

Shaped By Experience

In the hospitality industry, I believe you don’t necessarily need any additional schooling or specialized education. However, any previous career and education can be applied. Much of what I do and the jobs of my managers and chefs have to do with the following characteristics: • Attention to detail • Mediation • Flexibility • Management • Customer Service My background is a degree in psychology. I’ve worked in sales, management, psychological research and child development … not all ideal for this industry, but I have been able to take much of what I had learned from past experiences, careers and education to shape much of what I do today. I’ve received much advice over the years, much of which I use on a daily basis. Some of that advice is in the following quotes: “Only worry about the things you can control.” “Don’t be china in a Bull Shop.” - I know it’s backwards but really helps drive the point to not be fragile and to worry about being broken in an industry where fragile can’t exist. “It takes the average person three to 27 times of being told something before they understand it.”

Ross Schoening Vice President & General Manager Alliance Title & Escrow AllianceTitle.com First, let me provide a brief explanation of title insurance. Title insurance protects you, the insured, from matters or faults that occurred in the past that may affect your property. A title insurance policy protects the lender and buyer from invalid claims made against the title of a property. This career could give opportunities to introverts and extroverts alike as long as you are able to provide outstanding customer service and can manage fast-paced and pressure situations. Sounds like a recipe for disaster; well it is actually a very rewarding career if you look at end game of assisting folks in buying/selling of the “American Dream.” There isn’t a specific designation of schooling to be in the title and escrow industry, but business or marketing degrees would definitely assist you in this field. I strive to have a work-life balance for our team that allows them to live life outside of business hours. In our small community, the title and escrow business can be very fulfilling and provide decent opportunities to live in this vacation destination.

GIVING BACK

Nonprofits are the heart of community By Patty Hutchens

I

magine finally having the courage to escape a domestic violence situation and walking out the door from your home with nothing but the shirt on your back. Or what if you were a foster child who aged out of the system overnight and suddenly find yourself alone? A fire engulfs your home and takes all your precious belongings. These and many other situations have left countless people with nowhere to turn. Fortunately, for the last 10 years, Northwest Furniture Bank in Tacoma has been working to make a difference in the lives of others. Jeremy Simler is the director of development for Northwest Furniture Bank. He left his job in the banking industry more than four years ago to join this nonprofit and has not looked back. Describing himself as heartless and soulless at the time, he said he now finds fulfillment in helping people each day, giving them back the hope, dignity and stability that each person deserves. “I can fall asleep with my heart and soul fulfilled,” said Simler.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

The Northwest Furniture Bank has more than 150 referral partners in Pierce County alone. For instance, if someone’s home is destroyed by fire, the Red Cross will refer those people to Northwest Furniture Bank, who will then help him or her furnish a new place. Simler provides the example of a woman and four children who may be referred to Northwest Furniture Bank due to escaping a domestic violence situation. “A volunteer will take them through the furniture bank and assist them with shopping. The family can pick out five mattresses, a couch, a dining table, chairs and more. There is a $75 processing fee no matter how much furniture is needed by the client,” said Simler. “We can provide them with everything they need to make a house a home.” There are three different modules to Northwest Furniture Bank: the retail store, Hope Furnishings, which sells furniture pieces to the public and helps to generate revenue; Spring Back Mattress Recycling, which takes in and inspects mattresses and either refurbishes or recycles them;

73

and the furniture bank, which provides home furnishings to those who find themselves in need. “This has been a pretty phenomenal undertaking in our community,” said Simler of the number of people they are able to help. In August alone they recycled over 5,000 mattresses. The purpose of the program is to not only create employment opportunities within their company but also divert mattress waste from landfills and provide re-purposed mattresses and a revenue source for Northwest Furniture Bank. In August, Northwest Furniture Bank assisted 155 families, a huge testimony to the work they do. Simler encourages people to do what they can to give back to their community in any way they can. “Some of us have a gift of time. Some of us have the gift of money. Some of us have the gift of wisdom and insight to help in a certain situation,” said Simler. “Everyone has something. Figure out what ‘it’ is and give it away.” He guarantees that as one who gives back, you will be rewarded with a renewed spirit and soul. Establishing a Nonprofit While not everyone who desires can undertake something as grand as Northwest Furniture Bank, there are several who have fulfilled their desire to give back to the community by establishing a nonprofit. Kim Diercks is the president of 7B Women, Inc., a nonprofit in Sandpoint. The nonprofit holds monthly networking and educational

luncheons and organizes three large fundraising events throughout the year to donate money back into the community to women’s shelters, cancer groups that assist local patients and families, and more. It is something she finds very rewarding.

to teach and share with my children,” said Sloane. “Being part of a nonprofit also provides an opportunity to grow and evolve as a person by learning new skills, exploring my strengths and weaknesses and creating meaningful relationships.”

“I think the most important function of a nonprofit is to give back to our local communities,” said Diercks, who works for Columbia Bank in Sandpoint. “In the banking industry, we are serving individuals and businesses in our communities every day, so I’m fortunate to work for a community bank that has a ‘sense of community’ as one of its core values and is one that supports my nonprofit work.”

Diercks has been involved in several nonprofits and advises that to become a nonprofit there are critical steps to follow.

Diercks and five other women formed their nonprofit earlier this year, and the support it has received has been amazing, already raising several thousand dollars for local charities. “I am very fortunate in my personal life, so I feel it’s important to help others who aren’t as lucky,” said Diercks of her desire to be involved in nonprofit groups. “I am active in the causes that are important to me. I grew up with a father in the military, so I’ve lived in many different places. But I’ve never been anywhere with such a strong sense of community. It’s what makes Sandpoint such a great place to live.” Alice Sloane, a board member and co-chair of two of 7B Women’s major fundraisers, says being a part of 7B Women, or any nonprofit for that matter, fulfills her passion to help those in need. “My passion was passed down from my late grandmother. It is a passion and legacy I hope

First, organize your entity as a trust, corporation or association. This involves writing articles of incorporation and written by-laws. Articles of Incorporation are then filed with the state. “You must come up with a name, purpose, list of directors, as well as a registered agent,” said Diercks. The by-laws appoint initial directors, and one must provide minutes from the first Board of Directors meeting and include a “purpose” that will qualify for tax-exempt status under 501(c) (3). From there, the proposed nonprofit registers with the IRS to obtain an EIN number and applies for tax-exempt status under 501(c) (3) from the federal government with all the aforementioned documents. One thing to keep in mind when forming a board of directors is to have defined roles. Draw from people’s strengths and talents so that each person will be comfortable with his or her role. And above all, choose something that you are passionate about. “Being involved in a nonprofit not only helps to raise awareness and educate others,” said Sloane, “It also empowers people to be their best self.”

Oktoberfest Northwest October 6 - 8 You won’t find a bigger Munich-style beer hall in the state than inside the Washington State Fairgrounds in Puyallup during Oktoberfest Northwest (OktoberfestNW.com). The three-day festival not only features the standard food, drink and music, but also the Stein Dash. Unlike most road races, the water stations along this course include beer, and you can stay about as long as you want at each of the three stops. Oktoberfest Northwest is also home to the ever-popular Hammerschlagen tournament. The goal of the game is to drive a nail into a cross section of wood faster than your opponents. While simple in nature, the game can get ultra competitive, but there are plenty of fun games available for adults and kids alike. Admission is $12 for adults and children 12 and younger are free.

Leavenworth Oktoberfest October 6 - 7 & October 13 -14 The granddaddy of them all is a pilgrimage often planned out many months in advance. It’s probably too late to secure a room or rental for the weekend, but if you can find a way, it’s definitely worth the trip. Thousands come from all around for the massive celebration that includes four venues. People-watching is incredible here with partygoers dressed up in all manner of Bavarian attire. Great music, traditional food and plenty of German beers to choose from keep people coming back each year. If you can’t make it in October, you’ll find the spirit of Bavaria year round in this small mountain town, where everything from the banks to the McDonald’s are done up to look like you’re somewhere in the Alps. Check out LeavenworthOktoberfest.com to see the fun that will be had at this year’s event—and it’s never too soon to start making plans to attend next year.

Wishtoberfest October 13 How about an Oktoberfest party that is not only tasty and fun but benefits one of the most highly regarded nonprofits in the country? Wishtoberfest debuts this fall as a benefit for the Make a Wish Foundation of Alaska and Washington. Since 1986, the organization has granted more than 6,400 wishes to local children battling life-threatening diseases. Elysian, Fremont, Georgetown and Seattle Cider are just a few of the breweries, wineries and ciderhouses that will be giving out samples. Local caterers and food-truck owners will be providing a wide range of snacks, and there will be a silent auction, music and plenty of dancing as well. The event will be held at the Seattle Design Center, and tickets can be purchased at AKWA.Wish.org/wishtoberfest.

Spokane Oktoberfest October 27 - 29 The Centerplace Event Center in Spokane Valley hosts the third annual Bavarian-themed party. You’ll find two stages of music and entertainment including wiener dog races and other games. Beer gardens will be found both inside and out and will be pouring traditional German beers as well as specially created beers from local and regional brewers. The event is family friendly until 8pm, and children ages 12 and younger get in free all weekend. Passes are $10 per day or $15 gets you a three-day pass with in-and-out privileges. The party benefits the German American Society of Spokane. Plenty of food will be available to pair with your favorite beer. Find more information online at SpokaneOktoberfest.com.

Here boasts some of the most rigorous and difficult climbing courses in the world, so is best suited to pro-level ice mountaineers. These incredibly steep and gorgeous climbs include one that features a hole that reaches 100 feet in depth. Although few professional climbers have ever completed these legendary climbs, there are plenty of easier routes as well. It is still recommended only for at least intermediate level climbers, however.

Mount Buckner, Washington During the months of March to October, the icy slopes of Mount Buckner become open to climbers. Named after an early Cascadian pioneer, this technically difficult climb is not for the faint of heart and is best done with some previous experience, but offers some of the best views out there. At its highest point, it stands close to 1,000 feet of elevation and can take up to three or four days to fully climb and explore due to the challenging technical aspects and unpredictable weather. Mount Fury, Washington Mount Fury is also a very technically challenging climb but has been called one

of the most beautiful and scenic in the area. Located in North Cascades National Park, the mountain has two equally steep peaks and many glaciers known for their natural beauty and climbing challenges. Definitely have your ice axe sharpened and rope skills triple checked before attempting to take on this multi-day excursion. Mount St. Helens The renowned Mount St. Helens is one of the lower and more technically easy ice climbs for beginners in the region yet still offers its own challenges, so caution is recommended for those new to climbing. Exposure and low visibility due to snow, fog and cloud cover are things to watch out for here. In order to climb

SandpointLivingLocal.com

this gorgeous peak, you need a permit that is available from May to October each year. All said and done, ice climbers are some of the most adventurous sportsmen and women out there, with the opportunity to experience thrilling climbs and witness beautiful alpine views that few others get the chance to do. Whether you’re just starting out or have many years of climbing under your belt, the Pacific Northwest offers peaks that are sure to leave you satisfied.

Food & Drink Recipe BENEFITS OF PUMPKIN SEEDS IF YOU’RE IN THE MOOD for a chewy snack that doubles as a phenomenal health food, look no further than pumpkin seeds. With a wide variety of nutrients ranging from magnesium and manganese to copper, protein and zinc, pumpkin seeds are nutritional powerhouses wrapped up in a very small package. They also contain plant compounds known as phytosterols and free-radical scavenging antioxidants,1 which can give your health an added boost. Because these are high-fiber seeds, they’re able to boost your fiber intake, helping you reach the ideal amount of 50 grams per 1,000 calories consumed. Best of all, because pumpkin seeds are highly portable and require no refrigeration, they make an excellent snack to keep with you whenever you’re on the go, or they can be used as a quick anytime snack at home, too.

CHANCES ARE IF SOMEBODY mentions pumpkins, the first thought will be pie. Okay, maybe jack-o-lanterns. But pumpkins are also wonderful and warming when making soup, salad, casseroles … the list goes on, especially if you’re creative. Pumpkins are related to cucumbers and cantaloupes and come in large and small varieties. The health benefits are amazing because of the combination of vitamins, minerals, and other ingredients that make this plant-based food so unique. Not only are pumpkins good for your heart, but they also contain compounds like lycopene and carotenoids known to help diminish cancer cells, inhibit diabetes, hypertension, the signs of aging, and prevent macular degeneration. Pumpkin seeds are great for between-meal nibbling, but even greater in the nutrients department, similar to the rest of the fruit, which provides a healthful alternative to sugary snacks.

ROASTED PUMPKIN SEEDS Come enjoy the wholesome goodness of Millers. Made fresh with love every day.

Ingredients • 3 cups of pumpkin seeds (1 medium pumpkin yields approximately 1 cup of seeds) • 1 ½ tbsp. salt • Ice water • Additional forms of seasoning if desired

Preparation • When carving pumpkins, separate the seeds from the stringy insides as much as possible.

• Place the seeds in a colander and run under cold water. Stir with your hand. This cleans the seeds and helps to remove any strings or pulp still attached.

• Place the seeds and salt in a large mixing bowl and fill the bowl with iced water.

- Monday Nights with k102 -

• Stir and cover the bowl with aluminum foil. • Place the bowl in the refrigerator overnight. • The next day, remove the bowl and use a slotted spoon to dish the seeds onto an aluminum foil-covered baking sheet. • Preheat oven to 300°F. • Spread seeds evenly in a single layer on the baking sheet. • At this point, you can sprinkle the seeds with additional seasoning if desired. Some suggestions: garlic powder, cayenne pepper or olive oil and dill. Although the original is amazing, the flavor possibilities are endless! • Stir occasionally and bake for about 45 minutes or until golden brown.

HISTORY CREATING COMMUNITY Bonner County Museum and Lion’s Club team up for a Halloween treat By Patty Hutchens. Photos courtesy Bonner County Historical Society

IT CAN BE A DILEMMA TO figure out what to do with your kids on Halloween. After all, they want to go get all the goodies they can, but as parents you also want to ensure their safety. The solution? It is one that is guaranteed fun for both the kiddos and the parents! The Sandpoint Lion’s Club will join the Bonner County Historical Society and Museum for the fifth annual Trick-or-Treat at the Museum and Lion’s Den. On October 31, the museum will be open from 4 to 7pm for little ones to enjoy some trick-or-treating and explore the museum, which will be decorated for this fun holiday. The Lion’s Den will provide warm drinks and treats for anyone who needs a break from the weather. And if that isn’t enough to entice you, the other good news is both of these events are free and open to the public. An important mission of the Bonner County Historical Society and Museum is “history creating community.” To that end, every inch of the museum will be tricked out in its Halloween best, and there are volunteers who hand out candy and school supplies to the little goblins. Each year, this wonderful event hosts more than 500 visitors on Halloween night. For the past 45 years, the Bonner County Historical Society and Museum has been collecting and preserving the Bonner County region’s significant stories. The Museum is on the shore of the Pend Oreille River in Lakeview Park. The park has many amenities including picnic areas, a playground, tennis courts and the Native Plant Society arboretum. Adjacent to Lakeview Park is Memorial Field, which has a boat launch and is home to the Festival at Sandpoint every August and numerous Sandpoint High School sporting events. The Bonner County History Museum is a private, nonprofit educational organization and is a membership organization that is open to all. They operate with the support of the community, membership fees, gifts, retail sales, donations and grants from private foundations. The museum is open Tuesday through Friday, 10am to 4pm. On the first Saturday of each month, they are open from 10am to 2pm and admission is free to everyone. During the week, admission is $4 for adults, $3 for seniors and $1 for ages 6 to 18 years. Members and children under 6 years old are free.
