PUBLISHER Beauty... always a great gift. The Time is NOW
We hear the sirens, shortly thereafter we hear the sounds of a helicopter overhead. Then we get news via email or social media that there is a road or bridge closure. And then we wonder. Is it our child, parent, friend or spouse that is the victim of yet another tragic accident? It is a scenario that is all too common in our small town This month marks a year since a young man tragically lost his life in a collision on the Long Bridge. Just a few weeks ago, another woman died and a young woman’s life was tragically altered when she suffered two broken legs, requiring surgery. She is lucky and grateful to be alive. While not all accidents can be prevented, there are ways to minimize the likelihood of collisions, especially when it comes to the treacherous Long Bridge. The stretch of the byway from Ponderay to the Long Bridge has a posted speed limit of 45 mph. It makes perfect sense. What does not make sense, however, is the increase in the speed limit to 55 over the Long Bridge.
European facials Corrective treatments Waxing Manicures Pedicures Eye lash/brow tinting
Why not make the Long Bridge a no passing zone and keep the speed limit at 45 mph through Sagle? This would help significantly reduce the number of tragedies.
Back to School Focus Clarifying Skin Treatment - A great way to start off the school year, supporting your teen in the quest for clear, healthy skin.
Genee Jo Baker
Just a few weeks ago crossing arms were put up at a railroad crossing north of town where another young woman lost her life nearly two years ago. While the installation of these crossing arms will help prevent future accidents, it is of little consolation to those who loved her and to the many other families whose loved ones lost their lives at the same crossing. We need to act now and make the necessary changes. Stop the sirens, stop the helicopters and stop the horrific tragedies that could be avoided. Have an opinion? Share it with us on our Facebook page, Sandpoint Living. Creating. Connecting. Living Local.

If you travel north on Sandpoint’s Long Bridge, you know all too well the feeling of serenity that comes when crossing over the water into our beautiful mountain town, and this photo by Angela Dail of Little Orange House Photography perfectly captures that feeling. But the Long Bridge has also been home to tragedies for many. This month’s note from our publisher calls upon our community to make changes in the traffic laws so that this bridge can continue to be a monument of beauty instead of one of heartbreak. We hope you will read it and respond appropriately. Together we can make a difference.

62 Live Your Best Life School teacher Megan Olson shares how the brother of a Columbine victim inspired her to comprise a list of the top 100 things she wanted to experience in life. Shortly thereafter, when one of her young students with terminal brain cancer passed away it left her with her with an empty space in her heart. Then she faced her own personal losses as well. All this led her on a journey to do all she could to live her best life. It is this heartwarming and inspirational story she shares with our readers this month.

HOME & ESSENTIALS Tips & the Latest Trends
Staying Connected THE EBBS AND FLOWS IN RELATIONSHIPS.
BY JOY PETERSON.
“Every lasting marriage goes through a series of ‘divorces’ in its lifetime.” The above quotation is the best advice on marriage I ever received. Over the years, the words echoed to keep me “hanging in there” through the inevitable deep valleys that occur in every relationship. The “divorces” are times of plodding through the bottom of the valley, when what used to work no longer does. Couples repaint walls, replace worn furniture and renovate bathrooms, but don’t consider updating relationship strategies and behaviors. Over time, demands of real life intrude on a couple’s time and resources. The fire dims and begins the long descent into dissatisfaction, discouragement and despair. The marriage imperceptibly becomes increasingly less intimate and satisfying. Rough seas and flat days in a relationship are inescapable. Commitment binds you to your vows and keeps you on course. The ship at sea has no option but to ride out storms and endless days with no wind, no movement, no progress, no end in sight. You don’t stop growing the day you marry. Priorities are reordered, perceptions shift, your individual and marital worlds contract and expand. As you change, the relationship must adjust. Failure to acknowledge and embrace growth places relationships in jeopardy.
16
LIVINGLOCAL
Inevitable mini-divorces are wake-up calls. A time to acknowledge and celebrate the good in each other and the relationship. A time to build on the parts you do well, and face openly the elements that no longer serve and let them go. Replace outdated relationship ideals with conscious choices. When you fell in love, your relationship was top priority. Lovers invest time and energy in courtship behaviors to secure a beloved’s affections. Instead of fighting to hang on to a model of marriage and family that no longer satisfies, direct your energy and resources into creating the relationship you want. Your individual task is to become the partner you want to have. Blissful romantic encounters occur spontaneously and cannot be contrived. In a long-term relationship, such moments won’t happen unless affection and appreciation is intentionally nurtured and practiced daily. Making romantic liaisons a relationship tradition ensures incandescent moments will surprise you. Expand the definition of foreplay in your marriage. It isn’t something you engage in when you want to have sex; it is the affectionate manner in which you relate to your beloved in everyday interactions that lead to magic moments and intimate, loving encounters.

What is Crowdfunding?
We had a drafting table in the basement when I was a kid. It was baby blue, cumbersome, the size of a compact car. I suppose my dad used it for work — mechanical engineering in the days before computers. What I remember most is that he used it to draw his inventions. Some of them were never realized beyond paper, others came to life in and around our home.
MAKING DREAMS A REALITY.
Every once in a while my dad would see something at the store or on TV, something he had invented years before. He would pull out his drawings, talk about his designs and what inspired them. So many great ideas, too many unfulfilled.
BY DUSTIN HOFFMAN.
I think my dad could have successfully marketed his inventions through the crowdfunding platforms available today. Crowdfunding is, according to Google, the practice of funding a project or venture by raising many small amounts of money from a large number of people, typically via the Internet.
Create
Billions of dollars have been pledged toward millions of campaigns through websites like Gofundme, Kickstarter and Indiegogo.
Those who create know passion long before it makes sense on paper.
As a son frustrated for his father and a longtime DIY (do-it-yourself) gospeler, I’m a proponent of crowdfunding. Banks and businesses, especially the larger ones, like numbers and sure things. Numbers are important. Sure things don’t exist.
18
LIVINGLOCAL
Those who create know passion long before it makes sense on paper. Many have the drive to actualize their vision, but they need support of others who perceive value in what they are doing. That is the scenario well-suited to crowdfunding. There are a few points I feel responsible to clarify before continuing. Crowdfunding is not a replacement for traditional funding methods. Crowdfunding is not a get rich quick scheme, nor is it a vehicle to support your lifestyle. Lastly, raising funds involves risk and responsibility. Crowdfunding is no different on these points. Still interested? There are some things to consider before you sign-up and launch a campaign. Your project is a start-up; you’ll be in business if you succeed. Choose your best idea and clear your desk of the other stuff. Draft a business plan for yourself — short and to the point. You will be marketing yourself and your product. Your plan should include a strategy. Build your social network by searching out friends, family members and acquaintances. Crowdfunding, like most things in life, starts with who you know. Make a prototype, a demo, or some concept art. Don’t be afraid to spend a few dollars to polish up your image. Share your idea with others, approach people you deem smart and successful. Get feedback.

Make Mealtime Simple PLANNING AHEAD GIVE YOU MORE TIME FOR FUN. BY ANNIE NYE, INTERIOR DESIGNER, PONDERAY DESIGN CENTER. If you’re like me, summertime is a time to play and be outside. In turn, my house gets neglected and we forget our usual school-time routines. We get home, dump the wet towels and laundry on the tile, fix dinner and get ready for the next day. If I’m up to it, I’ll throw a load of laundry in the washer and hope to remember to turn it on after we’ve showered and before we crawl into bed. Then, when the alarm goes off in the morning, we’re up and out the door again. I don’t want us to live in a pigsty, but I also don’t want to miss out on something because we stayed home to clean and do yard work. If we have guests coming, I make sure the beds have clean sheets, the bathrooms are clean, and that we have drinks in the fridge. I have written in the past about how to maintain your house with a busy family life by doing small things each day. These are things like doing the dishes while you cook, doing a daily load of laundry, and cleaning a little bit each day to prevent too much buildup. It all boils down to time management.

I’m the first to admit that I am a total nerd. In an effort to save time, I have created a spreadsheet with a list of my family’s favorite recipes. There are columns associated with each recipe that list the cooking times and the necessary grocery store and Costco ingredients. Each month, we pick out a total of 20 to 25 recipes. Then, we take the spreadsheet, which already has the grocery list, and we conquer it. My husband gets the grocery store items, and I get the Costco items.
LIVINGLOCAL
When we get home, each recipe has a number associated with it, so we put all the ingredients for recipe #3 together in the pantry, label all the refrigerated ingredients for #3 so they don’t get eaten before we have a chance to make it and so on. Given this system, we’ve got our grocery shopping and labeling for the entire month down to less than two hours. Then, whomever gets home from work first, looks at the list of recipes, picks what they want, and gets dinner started. (Having a garden with consistently fresh vegetables helps during the summertime so produce doesn’t go bad. Also freezing some for the winter months helps with the budget). Our monthly grocery budget is $500. At the beginning of the month, we get $500 cash and that’s our grocery money. I know, I already told you I am a total nerd! But this helps save my sanity. I hate the “what sounds good for dinner” dilemma, so we just eliminated it. If the kids complain about a recipe, they get to pick the menu for the following month. When I am done with work for the day, I can do pretty much anything but swing by the grocery store to pick up dinner. This should give me more time to weed my garden or work on my house right? Maybe when school starts again, but right now, the lake is calling…

Investing in the Future A COLLEGE DEGREE IS STILL A SMART INVESTMENT.
Now it’s your turn.
THIS ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN BY EDWARD JONES FOR USE BY YOUR LOCAL EDWARD JONES FINANCIAL ADVISOR, KEN WOOD.
Summer is almost over, which means it’s “back-to-school” time. If you have young children, you may be purchasing backpacks, pencils, notebooks and similar items. But one day, you could be shopping for colleges — and when you do, you’ll find the bill is a little bit higher than the one you get from your local school-supply store. That’s why it’s never too soon to start saving. Just how costly is college? For the 2014–2015 school year, the average expense — tuition, fees, room and board — was $18,943 at a public four-year school and $42,419 at a fouryear private school, according to the College Board. And if recent history is any guide, these numbers will likely keep climbing. But there’s no need to panic. For one thing, your child may be eligible for loans, grants or scholarships. Still, you will likely end up shouldering some of the financial load, and you may ask yourself if it’s worth it. How much difference can a college degree make in the lives of your children? Actually, college still seems to be a pretty good investment: The average college graduate will receive about $1 million more in lifetime earnings than the average high school graduate, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. So when you assist your children in getting to college, you can be reasonably sure that you’re at least helping them start on the path toward a rewarding career.
contributions may be deductible from your state taxes. But 529 plans vary, so be sure to check with your tax advisor regarding deductibility. Another college funding option is a Coverdell Education Savings Account, which, like a 529 plan, can generate tax-free earnings if the money is used for higher education expenses. You can typically only put in a maximum of $2,000 per year to a Coverdell account, but it offers more flexibility in investment choices than a 529 plan.

You could also consider a custodial account, known as either UGMA or UTMA. You can put up to $14,000 per year into a custodial account without incurring gift taxes, and earnings would only be subject to the “kiddie tax” — that is, the first $1,050 is tax-exempt, the next $1,050 will be taxed at the child’s tax rate, and just the amount over $2,100 will be taxed at your tax rate. However, once your children reach the age of majority (either 18 or 21), they take control of the money and can do whatever they want with it — and their plans may not include college. Don’t wait too long to begin funding whichever savings vehicle, or vehicles, you choose. Your children may be young today, but before you know it, they’ll be college bound.
How should you put away money for college? Unfortunately, more parents use a general savings account than any other method, according to Sallie Mae’s How America Saves for College 2015 study. These accounts pay little or no interest and offer no tax benefits. As an alternative, consider investing in a 529 plan. Contribution limits are quite high, and federal taxes won’t be assessed on earnings used for qualified higher education expenses. (The earnings portion of withdrawals will be taxed, though, and can incur a 10% penalty if the withdrawals aren’t used for qualified expenses.) Furthermore, your 529 plan

Happy and Healthy TOP FIVE HEALTHY HABITS FOR PETS AND THEIR OWNERS.
Pets are the lights of their owners’ lives. And keeping pets healthy is key to extending the warmth and love for years. Dr. Ernie Ward, nationally renowned veterinarian, pet author and founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, offers his ‘Top Five Healthy Habits’ for pet owners to help ensure pets stay happy and healthy throughout the year: 1. Healthy Eats and Treats. The most important decision you make each day regarding your pet’s health is what you feed it. When choosing pet food, look for meat as one of the first few ingredients, and avoid byproducts, artificial flavors, colors and preservatives whenever possible. When it comes to treats, look for low-cal options that confer some health benefit. Treats that help maintain healthy joints, clean teeth or ensure pills are taken are recommended. The Greenies Brand specializes in great-tasting treats individually formulated to deliver these benefits. If you’re going to give treats, make them count! 2. Brain Boosters. Most people love puzzles and so does your pet! One of the best ways to feed and treat pets is with a food puzzle. These clever devices hide your pet’s food or treats until they unlock the secret and

Forget peanut butter-stuffed toys; these toys stimulate thought and don’t pack on the pounds! 3. Power Play. Walking your dog and playing with your cat each day keeps them trim, healthy and mentally alert. Pets that don’t receive enough physical activity (“lap potatoes”) have the highest rates of weightrelated diseases such as arthritis and diabetes and suffer from behavioral problems. For dogs, 20 to 30 minutes of brisk walking each day benefits both ends of the leash. For cats, two or three five-minute play periods are plenty. And don’t worry! Walking with your pet can be fun! Try programs like Greenies Wag & Walk 4 Life, and get active with your pet. 4. Paws Together. It’s more fun to play with other dogs! Socialized dogs are simply better behaved and more fun. Visit a dog park, enroll in training classes or become active in serving your community.

There are endless ways to get you and your dog to interact with other pet lovers. Share the fun and join a new pack! 5. Pets and Vets. Somehow pet owners started believing that the only time you need a vet is when something is wrong with your pet. The secret to a long and healthy life is vet visits when everything appears fine. A pet owner’s primary goal should be to prevent disease, not only treat it. Changes in diet or lifestyle, giving nutritional supplements and exercising more are straight forward solutions. Sometimes

you just need a prod; other times a push. Your veterinarian is your pet’s voice; let them speak for your pet by visiting once a year for young pets and twice yearly for those over age seven.

Football is like life - it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work, sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority. - Vince Lombardi As Sandpoint High School varsity football head coach Satini Puailoa enters into his fourth season since returning to the helm of the bulldogs, this year looks to be better than ever. “We caught up to a lot of teams last year,” said Puailoa. “And this year we should pass a lot of them. Whether it will be all (the teams) remains to be seen.” There are approximately 30 lettermen returning to this year’s squad, including over 30 seniors. And of the fourteen returning starters, there are two who were all state their junior year – Kyle Perry and Carlos Callado – and five players who were all-league. “We had

Paul Sundquist, Davan Norris, Carlos Collado, Wyatt McCormick and Kyle Perry,” said Puailoa of those who were all-league. Puailoa said the dedication this team has shown over the off-season has him confident that they will be giving it their all on the field this fall. “We are loaded with 5A competition,” said Puailoa, who adds that there are many players being looked at by college scouts. Among the teams they will face are Post Falls, University High School, Lewiston, Mount Spokane, East Valley and Lake

City High School. In addition, their league games will be against Moscow and Lakeland. It’s a schedule that speaks to the strength of the Sandpoint football program. “You can tell the health of the team when you see the schedule,” said Puailoa, who adds that to get ready for conference games it is good to play the bigger 5A schools. When discussing this season, Pualioa said key players include Davan Norris at quarterback with Paul Sundquist, who will be starting middle linebacker, serving as the backup quarterback. “We also have Kyle (Perry), Jake (Timothy) and Wyatt (McCormick); three guys who scored a lot of points for us last year,” said Puailoa, who adds that Perry alone scored 29 touchdowns last season. Puailoa is optimistic about the season. “We’ve been playing catch up since we started (four years ago),” said Puailoa. “Last year, with the exception of Lake City, we closed the gap.” Assistant Coach Chris Lassen agrees. “While we caught a lot of people this year, we’re hoping to pass them this year. But we have to show up and play on Friday night,” said Lassen. So just what is it that has made this team increase its success over the last few years? It is the dedication of the kids and coaches that has grown not just during the season, but during the off-season as well. “The first year, we would have four kids a day in the weight room during the summer,” said Puailoa. “Last year it grew to
about 50, and this summer we’ve had over 60 kids. Now, they all live here.” But it took more than encouraging the kids to train, it took providing an atmosphere of camaraderie and instilling a solid work ethic. “We have leaders and mentors who have created an atmosphere where the players can reach peak performance,” said Puailoa. “We’ve created a positive bond among everyone involved.” Lassen said the program is a creative one and is a two way street. “To have a program like this, the kids have to spend the time with the coaches, and the coaches have to make the time as well,” he said. “It’s amazing the number of adults who are here (in the weight room) every day interacting with the kids.”
“The administration has been wonderful about creating opportunities for the kids to be together,” said a grateful Coach Lassen. The result of team bonding and support from a highly dedicated coaching staff is a group of athletes that are always pulling for one another and have unique insight into one another’s strengths and weaknesses. “That does not just happen,” said Lassen. “We have a unique situation, and it has taken time to build the program.” As for the upcoming season, Lassen summed it up well. “When you have the blood, sweat and tears into the program, the kids are not going to let anyone take that away from them. Once we get to the top of that mountain, we’ll look for another mountain.”
While many of the students spend a lot of time together in the off-season, once school begins there are about 150 football players who send a minimum of four hours each day together in their physical education class and practice. “Add to that the time they spend on the bus, eating their team meals and game time,” said Puailoa of the 30 plus seniors, 25 to 30 juniors, over 40 sophomores and approximately 50 freshmen who will be suiting up for the bulldogs’ football program this fall. Coach Lassen and Coach Puailoa credit the Sandpoint High School administration with being instrumental in providing a schedule that allows the players time to bond and grow.
“We have leaders and mentors who have created an atmosphere where the players can reach peak performance.”

BEGIN YOUR JOURNEY TO WELLNESS Local physical therapists offer aquatic therapy and much more. By Patty Hutchens. Photos courtesy Melody Vanhorn. At Cornerstone Physical Therapy, clients can receive a multitude of outpatient physical therapy services from highly experienced physical therapists that provide treatment in many areas. Owned by Christina Rust, DPT, the business offers the only full-size warm water therapy pool in Sandpoint, a modality of treatment that helps expedite healing in many cases. The pool, which measures 32 ft. long by 22 ft. wide, has a unique design with varying separate depth levels – 3.8 ft., 4.2 ft., 4.8 ft. and a 6.0 ft. deep water section. “This allows for having several people comfortably in the pool at the same time and participating in a wide variety of aquatic based exercises and activities including, walking, leg strengthening, arm strengthening, core stabilization and balance activities as well as completely un-weighted spine decompression exercises,” explained Rust, who has 20 years of aquatic therapy experience. “The pool is kept at 92 degrees and has both stairs with a railing and a hydraulic chairlift for entering and exiting the pool. Private changing rooms and a shower are added features of our facility.” Rust has taught aquatic therapy to students at North Idaho College’s physical therapy assistant program. She first opened Cornerstone Physical Therapy in 2002 on South First Avenue. In 2011, Cornerstone moved to its current location at 1301 North Division, which

A Job for Julia Goodwill Job Placement Program opens the door to employment. By Heather Alexander. Photos courtesy Goodwill Industries and Jamie Sedlmayer.
Julia wanted to have a job and be an active member of her community. But when she moved to a new community in 2012, she faced closed doors and rejection for three solid years. After fruitless attempts to find employment through other resources, Julia was jobless, broke and defeated. The extended period of time without employment left her feeling isolated and struggling to make social connections. Frustrated, Julia finally came to Goodwill in December of 2014. Julia was born with cerebral palsy. Her CP presents mobility barriers and a speech impediment. She gets around using a motorized wheelchair. She is a bright and engaging young woman, with a ready smile, and easy conversation with everyone she meets. When potential employers saw Julia roll into their businesses asking about job openings and looking for applications, many simply told her the open positions had been filled, and some even laughed. Julia had not always faced these barriers to employment. She used to live in Eugene, Oregon, where she worked for a large medical clinic, doing things such as filing, helping with office tasks and directing people through the large facility. Julia was not confident at first that Goodwill would be able to help her find a job. Goodwill

Job Developer Amy Taylor worked with Julia to find opportunities with employers in the community who could use Julia’s skills and energy. One day, Julia and Amy sat at a local coffee shop pouring over job openings in her community. An announcement for a “Sign Shaker” at Swireless jumped out at Julia. Amy and Julia immediately drove over with Julia’s resume. Amy introduced Julia to the store manager, Jesse Goodwater. Two days later, Goodwater called Julia and asked her to come in for a job interview. Both asked each other many questions. Goodwater was concerned first and foremost for Julia’s safety, as the Sign Shaker is positioned on the sidewalk along Stadium Way. Goodwater had Julia drive her wheelchair up and down the sidewalk, testing the brakes, shaking the sign. “Jesse’s biggest concern was for her safety,” says Amy Taylor, “He never doubted that she could do the job.” On the spot, Goodwater offered Julia the job. “I was shocked. I have to admit I didn’t believe it at first,” Julia says. Unfortunately, she has had experiences in the past when she has been offered a job, then the offer is withdrawn. “I was waiting for [Goodwater] to take it back, but he never did. He smiled, shook my hand, and said he was looking forward to having me work with him. Then I was happy. So, so happy.” Julia has been working as a Sign Shaker for Swireless

She enjoys being part of a company team. When asked what she enjoys about her job, Julia explains, “I like being able to get people to smile. I like getting people to notice me in a wheelchair. I like teaching people that yes, I am in a wheelchair, and it is ok. I am going to be here, whether you like it or not, and I am not going to bite. I think I set a good example for other people with disabilities. I am in a wheelchair, but I am not helpless.” Julia and Swireless experienced some interesting community response to Julia’s job as a Sign Shaker during the cooler and wet late winter weather. A handful of people expressed concern, and even anger in some instances, to Goodwater, the local paper, and even the local police department, assuming that Julia was somehow being mistreated or not taken care of properly. “It’s nice to know that there are caring people in our community, and they are watching out for me,” says Julia. “But I feel very uncomfortable that people are upset about me working in the rainy or cool weather. There is no reason to be upset. This is my job. I am from Oregon, so the rain doesn’t

IN FOCU S KEEPING AGRICULTURAL TRADITIONS ALIVE
Idaho State and Draft Horse and Mule International show’s 39th annual event in Sandpoint later this month. By Jani Gonzalez. Photos by Lance Deacon. Driving draft horses and mules was a way of life to move freight and work the ground until agricultural technology advanced. Now, hobbyists carry on and preserve the tradition of training the large animals for exhibit and competition at the 39th Annual Idaho State Draft Horse and Mule International. “The show is unique to North Idaho, and it’s the longest running show in the Northwest,” said Dick Blakley, president of the North Idaho Draft Horse and Mule Association that organizes the event. “This is to show the methods of the past. The show was started to promote the use of draft horses – how they were used and demonstrate how our forefathers used them before technology.” The event was first organized in the Draft Horse Show & Pull in 1974 by Lloyd Jones and Sy Thompson. Thompson passed away earlier this summer and Jones several years ago. The event at North Idaho Fair today focuses on barn exhibits and a pull show where the animals pull a weight of up to 2,000 pounds in the competition. Two years later, in 1976, Tony Keil, with the help of Thompson, began the show in Sandpoint. Later, the North Idaho Draft Horse and Mule Association took over, and the show formed to what it is today.

“The whole idea of the show was to bring together working stock form the local area for them to show and have fun. Sy said that having fun was the mains stay.… The big barn and stalls were filled with horses and per Sy when you walked in the barns all you saw were ‘rows of ears,’” Blakley said. Annually, the show attracts more than 3,000 people and approximately 25 exhibitors, some of which are families competing against or working together. Exhibitors come from Northern Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana and Canada. Overall, the show is more about entertaining and educating the public about the draft horses and mules endearingly referred to as the “gentle giants.” “Draft animals remain an exciting, living testament to our heritage, and the history of our area,” Blakley wrote in a letter as president about the event to vendors.

In fact, draft animals weren’t always used for agriculture – mule hitches were used during World War I to haul ammunition and machine guns. Today, draft animals are often used by the Forest Service to work in the back country campgrounds. Some people may also hire teamsters to do small-scale logging to avoid the impact of contemporary machinery. Exhibitors at the event compete for prize money, jackets and rosettes. The money is mainly to cover the costs of participation because driving draft horses and mules is “not a money-making hobby,” Blakley said. The event, to be held September 24 through the 27, at the Bonner County Fairgrounds, starts off Thursday with a free night to view a log skidding competition where a driver leads a team to pull a

There are also competitions of various horse formations, such as the unicorn, tandem and four-, sixand eight-up formations where the respective number of horses are hitched together in pairs or abreast. Categories include teams plus Men’s, Women’s, Junior and Pee Wee (ages 5 to 7 years) competitions. Historically, the formations were to draw a particular amount of horsepower, depending on the task at hand. For example, the unicorn formation is when there is a single horse leading two hitched side-by-side behind pulling the wagon. This formation was used for hilly areas where more power was needed. When horses are hitched in tandem, one behind the other, it was to transport goods through narrow streets, explained Steffani Lippert, Blakley’s companion and partner in driving mules for their team, S&D Mules. In addition to demonstrating and competing, education is another big part of the event. The North Idaho Draft Horse and Mule Association’s Youth Committee runs a driving clinic at the event for youth and children. Marcia Harrison, well known in the field, will be giving a demonstration of cowboy dressage. The classes and demonstrations will take place before and
after the main performances and competitions. There also will be a mini clinic on equine hoof care. “People are welcome to talk to the teamsters in between category competitions,” Lippert said. There also will be a Raffle Colt to raise money for the association’s youth program. Each year, they hold a driving clinic for youth at the event in part to generate interest in the tradition of driving draft horses and mules. Lastly, there will be a silent auction and a “Wagons Ho Art and Gear” show in addition to numerous vendors. Lippert and Blakley have been driving mules together for the past seven years since they each turned 60 years old. Lippert had long had an interest in driving and both wanted to do a hobby together. “We’ve been active on driving whatever we can drive – up to a six-up hitch,” she said. As to why they drive mules over horses – “that’s just the way the coin fell,” Blakley said. “It’s just how we got started. They have a different attitude and disposition, and they just take care of us,” he said. Draft mules are traditionally known to be calmer and have a better temperament than horses. Lippert manages a construction company and Blakley has a background in logging and also works in construction. Both have learned how to drive mules mainly through the generosity of other exhibitors.
“It’s a big family – everyone is nice and helpful,” Lippert said of the draft horse and mule community. “People helped us learn and in turn we are passing on what we’ve learned.” Now, as a more experienced driver, Lippert has helped her two granddaughters drive mules. One granddaughter, age 8, has been driving in the Pee Wee Team Driving competitions and this year will move on to the junior category. The other granddaughter competes in the Pee Wee category. “Everyone helps everyone – that’s the beauty of the whole thing,” Lippert said. “We all camp together and eat together – it’s great family fun,” Blakley added. If You Go: The Idaho State Draft Horse and Mule International will be September 24 through the 27 at the Bonner County Fairgrounds. The Thursday competitions start at 5pm, Friday at 12pm, and Saturday and Sunday at 9am. Thursday night is free. Tickets for the other days are sold separately or as a season pass for the weekend. Adults, students and seniors are $10. Children 6 and younger are free. Friday is Senior Day when tickets are 2 for 1. Attendees can camp by the fairgrounds – for more information call 208.691.4365 or 509.721.0436. For general information, call 208.699.0816.

QUALITY OUTPATIENT SURGICAL CARE Enhancing the availability of health care in North Idaho. By Patty Hutchens. Photos courtesy Lisa Turner & Pend Oreille Surgery Center. Since May 2009, Pend Oreille Surgery Center, LLC (POSC) has offered people in North Idaho a unique experience when it comes to outpatient surgery. Specifically designed and staffed to provide quality cost effective outpatient surgical care, POSC is the only multispecialty ambulatory surgery center in the two northern counties and is completely physician owned and managed. First established by Mark Savarise, MD and Michael DiBenedetto, MD, the current owners are Charles M. Crane, MD, Michael R. DiBenedetto, MD, Nathan C. Kanning, MD, Jonathan D. Fisher, DPM and Chase Williams MD — all of whom offer cost effective outpatient surgical care in a facility complete with three operating rooms and a team of highly skilled nurses and surgical technologists. “Our focus is on you and your comfort,” said Kris Sabo, RN, Executive Director for POSC. With the world of health care becoming more difficult to navigate, POSC offers cash pay packaged pricing which covers the costs charged for the facility, surgeon and anesthesia care. Patients choosing this payment option are those who do not have a health care policy or have a high deductible plan that they will not ask us to bill. The outpatient procedures performed at POSC are many including: • General Surgery including hernia repair, breast biopsy, port placement for medication infusion, hemorrhoid care
and laparoscopic gall bladder removal • Orthopedics including carpal tunnel release, hand surgery, knee and shoulder arthroscopy, spinal decompression and surgical fracture care • Gastroenterology including EGD and colonoscopy • Plastic Surgery (not at this time but in the very near future) • Podiatry including bunion and hammer toe correction, flatfoot reconstruction and fracture management Sabo shares that the opening of POSC has enhanced the availability of health care to the residents and visitors of Sandpoint and the surrounding area. “This expansion of services helps meet the needs of our growing community,” said Sabo. “Our patient satisfaction scores remain consistently above the national average for similar centers.” One commonality the owners of POSC share is their desire to live in a community where they can practice medicine and improve and experience the quality of life that Sandpoint offers. “Because of this, we are committed to furthering the quality of care provided here and invest time and revenue toward recruiting other like-minded health care providers to the greater Sandpoint area,” said Sabo. “This is an exciting time in the field of health care, and all of us are proud to have this opportunity to make a difference in the health of our

community members.” The desire to improve the quality of life for the community they call home extends far beyond the walls of POSC. The medical staff and several employees give of their time, talent and resources to many organizations including donating equipment and supplies to North Idaho College’s nursing program and Panhandle Animal Shelter, and monetary contributions to CHAFE 150, Sandpoint Soccer Camp, Love, Inc. and the Scenic Half Marathon. In addition to volunteering at many area churches and schools, the staff devotes countless hours to the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce, Panhandle District 1 Disaster Preparedness, Rotary, P.E.O., Luke Commission, Sandpoint Nordic Club, and providing meals for the elderly, shut-ins and the lower income population. POSC also provides support to the WWAMI Medical Residence program and the University of Idaho PA program. Sabo shares that the entire staff of POSC is grateful to their patients for trusting them with their health care needs.

ATHLETES OF THE MONTH BY PATTY HUTCHENS.
Kyle Perry knows what it takes to succeed. Going into his senior year, he has a 4.1 GPA, having always earned a spot on the honor roll, and he has earned nine varsity letters. A foursport athlete, Kyle plays football, basketball, baseball and runs track. And if you have ever watched him run the football, you have been entertained by his athleticism and agility. And it is something others have noticed too. Last year Kyle was awarded the Jim Veriwolf Best Back award, the Newcomer of the Year for 4A Inland Empire League (IEL), first team All-IEL and first team All State. Kyle plans to play college football and would like to major in business, eventually owning his own business. “I would like the flexibility of owning my own business as I would also like to help coach one day,” said Kyle. The biggest challenge Kyle has had to overcome is when he suffered concussions as a freshman and sophomore. They set him back mentally,

but he said he was able to overcome that by doing neck strengthening exercises giving him more confidence on the field. Kyle said he enjoys participating in sports in part due to the people he forms special bonds with while training and competing. As for the best advice he has been given from a coach, it came from Sandpoint head football coach Satini Puailoa. “I learned from Coach P. that to have anything great, it takes time and hard work, and there are no shortcuts to that formula.” Rainey Woodward Junior Rainey Woodward has made her mark in the running community. She joined both cross country and track her freshman year and ended up finishing 8th overall at state in cross country that year and won the 800 for 4A in track at state that same year. Last year Rainey placed 18th overall in cross-country, but had to sit out track season due to a broken bone in her foot. She is also an honors student and said she strives to continue that throughout her final two years of high school.
Rainey would like to run cross-country and track in college for a division one school. “I’m currently looking for schools that will fit my career and athletic goals,” said Rainey, adding that she loves to cook and would eventually like to own a bakery or café. “I think college will be the perfect time to figure out exactly what will make me happy for the rest of my life,” said Rainey. One aspect of running that Rainey enjoys is that it tests her limits in several ways. “I love that this is a sport where your mental strength has to be just as strong or stronger than your physical strength,” said Rainey. Rainey credits her coaches Angie and Matt Brass with teaching her important life lessons. “A positive mindset will make you a happier person and will help you enjoy even the hardest of tasks whether it be in school, work, or a sport.”

A DAY WITHOUT POVERTY
Convoy of Hope offers back-to-back events in Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint. By Jani Gonzalez. Photos courtesy Convoy of Hope.
The disparities of poverty in Northern Idaho are great but often hidden. The organization Convoy of Hope offers to alleviate the burdens of poverty for one day, and volunteers are increasing their ties to offer help beyond the events in Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint. Convoy of Hope is a worldwide organization that manages a number of programs to fulfill the needs of thousands of people. They are first responders to communities affected by natural disasters and consistently monitor weather situations to be at the ready. They also run sustainable income generation programs for women, meal programs for children, and assist impoverished farmers with the skills and tools needed. The organization was founded by the Donaldson brothers who lost their father after he was hit by a drunk driver. After the accident, they lived off the goodwill of their neighbors, said Eric Rust, pastor at Cedar Hills Church in Sandpoint. The founding brothers were part of his parent’s youth ministry. “They wanted to give back worldwide the generosity they had received,” he said. Convoy of Hope in Coeur d’Alene In the U.S., Convoy of Hope serves as an umbrella organization that allows local churches, agencies and businesses to have the Convoy of Hope days. They offer free services such as groceries, health and dental screenings, job assistance, and haircuts as well as prayer services and activities for children. Last year was Convoy of Hope’s first time

in Coeur d’Alene, and the response was overwhelming. While local coordinators had planned and prepared supplies for 4,000 attendees, they served more than 5,000. This year, they are planning for 6,500. The event was considered more than a success because of the relationships formed at the event. “As a result of relationship-building, we saw businesses, churches and organizations working alongside each other like never before. No walls, just helping to make our community a better place to live and work and providing resources for our guests and their families to navigate life,” said Kathi Abate, one of the event coordinators for the CDA event.
Going Beyond Convoy of Hope in CDA The networking of community agencies in preparation for Convoy of Hope led select agencies to organize smaller events similar to Convoy of Hope throughout the school year. James Curb, Program Director and Homeless Liaison for the Coeur d’Alene School District, helps families at risk for homelessness. He partnered Heritage Health along with area churches, businesses and organizations to have mini Days of Hope at the schools with the
Gizmo, joining the Boy Scouts or taking bike rides with Bike CDA. “We’re hoping you’ll see the same faces in your neighborhood, not just the county and make it intimate,” he said of trying to establish relationships between agencies and individuals who need their services. At one event they “had the superintendent cooking hot dogs,” Curb said of the community involvement. He said they will continue to focus the events on the needs as they arise and according to the season, such as possibly educating about immunizations.
“We’re doing what we should have been doing and lost sight of – taking care of our neighbors.”
Convoy of Hope does more than give away free services and supplies – it brings together a community that may otherwise be ignorant to its greater needs. After the CDA event in 2014, several of these business, churches and organizations have gone even one step further to organize mini Days of Hope at schools with the highest needs in the community.
“They said they wanted to make it last through the year,” Abate explained. “Most of these relationships were formed under Convoy’s ideas of community. They’re trying to grow that, but it just shows that when you bring people together, great things can happen.”

greatest needs. The events are held after school, so families could attend more easily and are hosted by a neighborhood church. “We’re trying to create a network where people can develop relationships for what they need. Even if money isn’t an issue, there’s a need for positive role models … and also make (people) aware of what’s available to them,” Curb said. Events last year focused on nutrition, recreation, women’s health and financial planning. Part of the goal is to show people what’s available to them in the community, such as classes at

“It’s just a way to start the conversation on what it means to live a healthy, meaningful life,” Curb said of the events.
Convoy of Hope in Sandpoint The success of Coeur d’Alene’s event inspired Rust to reach out to pastors in Sandpoint about organizing their own Convoy of Hope day. They are planning for between 4,000 and 5,000 attendees. “God used me by putting it in my heart,” Rust said. “Sandpoint has great economic diversity... It’s hard as a community to serve that need. This outreach will provide an opportunity for everyone interested to be a part of the solution – to give a day of hope that gives people

tangible resources.” Rust recruited Vicki and Dale Jeffres as the volunteer coordinators for the Sandpoint event. The main difference between the two events is the population they are serving. “We’re more spread out – from Oldtown up to the Canadian border and also the border with western Montana. These are the main challenges,” said Dale Jeffres. The Jeffres and others have been spreading the word to Bonner and Boundary County schools, churches and businesses. They also expect a number of veterans since this year’s Stand Down event was not held, he said. The services, however, will remain the same as CDA’s. “It’s going to be a blast. It’s not just about poverty but the community too,” he said. Although poverty in Bonners County may be prevalent, its community support surpasses any other county because of the number of charity events held in the area. Jeffres said he knew of someone who typically leaves for winter who changed his plans so that he could volunteer at the event. “People are coming out of the woodwork (to help). Bonner County may rank (high) in the state in poverty and Boundary County has to be close,” he said. “We’re doing what we should have been doing and lost sight of – taking care of our neighbors.”

FUN FACTS FOR 2015 NFL SEASON SCHEDULE The Cowboys are the only team in the NFL who play both teams from last year’s Super Bowl. Seven games will feature rematches from last year’s playoffs. The Falcons don’t have to leave the South Region for their final seven games of the season. Although never being in the same division since 2001, Tom Brady and Peyton Manning have met every year since 2003. The Steelers finally travel to Seattle. This has been a long-awaited visit after the Seahawks lost to the Steelers 21-10 in Super Bowl XL. No AFC teams play on Thanksgiving Day. Top two draft picks Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota face off in week one. The first time in NFL history that the top two draft picks open the season against one another. The Titans have the luxury of four straight home games.
A
s we near the end of another wonderful summer in the Pacific Northwest, it’s about that time of year when many of us begin to feel dejected. The locals know all too well that the warm weather season around here is often brief. The reality of the impending winter isn’t necessarily something that creates excitement. Thankfully, this inevitable reality can be offset by one that offers a little more fun and intrigue through the winter months. The reality is that we are but a short breath away from the first game of the 2015 NFL season between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New England Patriots on September 10. The return of football seems to be a breath of fresh air to many. Every new season seems to reinforce the fact that football has supplanted all other major professional sports in the U.S. as the favorite among the populace. It provides everyone an excuse to get together
and divert away from their daily obligations and responsibilities. It’s no secret that many around the Pacific Northwest are eager for their Seahawks to take the field again. All the 12’s are anxious to know if a third straight Super Bowl will happen, if they will rebound from the heartbreaking Super Bowl loss, plus much more. We’ll look more into the state of the Seahawks. For now, let’s look at what else to watch for. What to Watch For Outside of Seattle It’s hard to perfectly summarize within the confines of these pages everything to keep an eye on this season. This past off-season saw more drama and headlines than any in recent history. Just as an appetizer and for the sake of brevity, let’s highlight three key offseason developments that will garner plenty of attention once the season kicks off.
The Seahawks play 10 games against teams that made the playoffs one year ago. The Cowboys haven’t beaten the Packers since 2008.

1. The 49er Meltdown The 49ers experienced one of the most tumultuous and distressing off-seasons any one team has had to endure in the history of the NFL. Just to summarize, the 49ers lost Head Coach Jim Harbaugh, ILB Chris Borland, OT Anthony Davis, DE Justin Smith, ILB Patrick Willis, RB Frank Gore, WR Stevie Johnson, CB Perrish Cox, CB Chris Culliver, WR Michael Crabtree, OG Mike Iupati, OLB Dan Skuta, and OLB Aldon Smith. This is a staggering amount of production that will need to be replaced immediately. Not even three years ago, the 49ers were only one touchdown away from a Super Bowl victory against the Baltimore Ravens. Since that day, the 49ers began a gradual fall from prominence. They lost to the Seahawks in the 2013 NFC Championship game and missed out on the playoffs entirely in 2014. Even with the massive roster overhaul, 49ers fans should make every attempt to remain optimistic. QB Colin Kaepernick may have issues with consistency, but he is still the same man who led the 49ers to a near Super Bowl victory a short while ago. He will have talented wide receivers Torrey Smith and Anquan Boldin returning. The youngsters of the team will also be given an opportunity to step up. The major questions will exist with the offensive line, running back, and defense (especially the linebacker corps). The good news is it’s
unlikely that the 49ers will fall all the way to the bottom. However, patience among the fans and team will need to be exercised as a new identity is formed. 2. A Deflated Issue in New England Look, we’re all tired of hearing about it. However, it is a major issue that has plagued the NFL from the very beginning. Just for reiteration, the saga of the so-called “Deflategate” scandal arose after the AFC Championship game earlier this year between the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts. The Patriots allegedly under-inflated their game balls under the instruction of QB Tom Brady. The Patriots wound up routing the Colts 45-7. The Patriots were given a $1 million fine, loss of first and fourth round draft picks in 2016 and 2017 respectively, and Brady has been suspended the first four games of 2015. Brady appealed his suspension to Commissioner Roger Goodell, but it was denied. According to multiple sources, Brady and the National Football League Players Association are taking the case before a federal judge in hopes that they can reduce or eliminate Brady’s suspension. Assuming the status quo remains the same, the Patriots will be without Brady against Pittsburgh and Jacksonville at home and Buffalo and Dallas on the road. Head Coach Bill Belichick’s system is genius enough to allow nearly any NFL quarterback to step in and be successful (see Matt Cassel 2008). It

wouldn’t be surprising to see them go 2-2 or even 3-1 without Brady. What will be interesting to see is how the team handles the distractions. Being the returning Super Bowl champions as well as the focal point of the Deflategate issue, this team will be bombarded by a media microscope all season. Considering the Patriots were able to win the Super Bowl while the scandal was barely two weeks old, they will likely be just fine. 3. #1 vs. #2 It’s been awhile since the Tennessee Titans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been given positive attention in the media. The teams were a combined 4-28 last season and received the top two picks in the NFL draft the following May. Tampa Bay wound up selecting quarterback Jameis Winston (Florida State) with the number one overall pick,

while Tennessee selected quarterback Marcus Mariota (University of Oregon) at number two overall. As fate would have it, these two quarterbacks match up against each other in week one of the regular season in Tampa Bay. This may be a single game, but considering the rarity of the occurrence and the promise that both these quarterbacks possess, it is very intriguing. If both quarterbacks pan out, this game could be remembered as a classic. What You’ve Been Waiting For The Seahawks and their fans have been waiting for this moment for what seems like an eternity: turning the page on last season and starting anew. It would be no surprise to discover many hearts that are still lamenting how last season ended. They were three feet away from a repeat Super Bowl victory, only to have the rug violently ripped out from beneath their
52
feet. This is of course in reference to the now infamous play call of a short slant pass on second and goal from the Patriot’s oneyard line that resulted in an interception by CB Malcolm Butler, which sealed the Super Bowl victory for the Patriots. A flurry of disappointment, confusion and anger ran rampant across the world of the Seattle Seahawks. Ever since that day, Head Coach Pete Carroll has assumed full responsibility of the play call. However, he fully believes his call was the right one. While some people said “(it was the) worst possible decision,” Carroll said “(it was the) worst possible outcome.”

Seahawks begin their quest for a third straight Super Bowl trip? 1. Offense QB Russell Wilson is now signed long-term (four years at $87.6 million), and RB Marshawn Lynch is back on a contract extension that will keep him in Seattle through the 2017 season. Add in a blockbuster trade for TE Jimmy Graham from the New Orleans Saints, and all of a sudden the Seahawk’s offense is one of the biggest threats in the NFL. Lynch is the oil that keeps the offensive machine running smoothly by opening up the passing game for Wilson. With the addition of Graham, the Seahawks will have arguably the best red zone offense in the NFL. Any defense having to account for both Lynch and Graham in a short yardage situation is something that should only happen in a nightmare. Because game plans from the opposition will revolve heavily around these three, this will open a wide door for other role players like wide receivers Doug Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse and Super Bowl breakout star Chris Matthews. The offensive line will need resolve as C Max Unger was shipped to New Orleans in the Graham trade and LG James Carpenter left for the Jets in free agency. However, the pros outweigh the cons and this offense will do well.

2. Defense
every opponent throughout the season.
Defensive Coordinator Dan Quinn is now the head coach for the Atlanta Falcons. Last year’s Defensive Backs Coach Kris Richard will assume his position. Richard is lucky enough to inherit a defense that will be vying for a third consecutive year as the best in the league.
Making Sense of Everything
Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas and Cary Williams (the secondary known as “The Legion of Boom”) are all back. A linebacker group consisting of Bobby Wagner, Bruce Irvin and K.J. Wright are back as well. Then the defensive line will carry Cliff Avril, Michael Bennett and Brandon Mebane. The return of these core players will allow Richard to keep last year’s scheme largely intact. With Pro Bowl caliber talents ranging across every facet of the defense, it’s hard for anyone to deny the potential of being the best in the league for a third straight year. 3. The Schedule The Seahawks face the fourth toughest schedule in 2015. They have nine games against teams that made the playoffs in 2014. Five of their road games will be against ten-game winners from a year ago. The NFC West should be stronger as the Arizona Cardinals will have QB Carson Palmer returning and the St. Louis Rams were busy improving their roster in the off-season. Knowing that many will attempt to thrust the Seahawks off of their throne of recent success, they will need to display a healthy reverence to
LIVINGLOCAL
The 12’s have every reason to be optimistic heading into 2015. The same success the Seahawks exhibited on the field the last few years should continue. Despite a schedule that seeks to hinder, this team has the chemistry and skill to overcome. Since the salary cap era began in 1994, no team has ever made three straight Super Bowl appearances. Although they are on the wrong side of history, an improved offense and a formidable defense afford them an opportunity to say otherwise. Even playing the role of a skeptic, one would be hard pressed to find any glaring holes on this team. If forced to find something, what would be the biggest roadblock for the Seahawks in 2015? After all, the talent is there, the coaching is there, the support from the fans is there. Seven months ago the Seahawks were three feet away from winning their second straight Super Bowl. In the moments immediately following that heartbreaking interception, it was evident that the Seahawks had only beaten themselves. Considering this occurred on the grandest of all sports stages, it’s hard to see them making that same mistake twice. So as a season of redemption begins in 2015, the only thing standing in the way of the Seahawks, is the Seahawks.

WHATEVER IT TAKES Do whatever it takes to know that you lived – write the novel, jump into the lake wearing the fancy dress, learn to dance, experience the exotic places of the world, and don’t be afraid to love deeply. My plea to you is that when it is your unavoidable time, your heart will be full because it turned every stone. You can rest knowing that you lived and not existed. Make your list and brace yourself for how your life is about to change. • A recent study by Dr. Gail Matthews suggests that the act of writing your goals makes you 42 percent more likely to achieve them. • The top 3 most popular items on a bucket list include: 1) Offer support to a humanitarian cause 2) Write a book 3) Pursue a passion. • According to a recent report, only four out of 10 have a goal list for their retirement years.

distraction that washes us away from the shore of our unfulfilled dreams. The notion of generating and writing goals may appear trivial at first glance, but it can be what sets living apart from existing. You only have one life, and I challenge you to go after it. Several years ago, I listened to a young man give a discussion at an educational benefit. He is the brother of Rachel Scott, the first victim of the horrendous Columbine High School shooting. The speaker delved into the importance of composing and writing goals and its correlation to achieving success and accomplishing dreams. That night, I went home and I established a list that was comprised of the top 100 things that I want to experience in my life. I gave no regard to how outlandish or unattainable they may have seemed at the time. I wrote from the perspective of envisioning the final moments of life. What would it take for me to feel as though I had fully lived? In 1961 John F. Kennedy spoke before Congress of his goals in search of space

program funding. He asserted that the United States was in need of committing itself to the goal of having a man land on the moon by the end of the decade. In July of 1969, with less than six months to spare, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins fulfilled the president’s bold aspiration. There is power in the articulation of our words and how they relate to the fulfillment of our ambitions. It was only four years ago that the sweet, funny kid who graced my classroom passed away from brain cancer at the age of 13. He left a huge empty space in my heart. What probably hurt the most was to watch the torturous misfortune that his mother would be forced to endure. Before his passing, the class held a discussion from the book “Tuck Everlasting”. The characters inadvertently drink from a mystical fountain of youth and are forced into immortality. The conversation with this boy was forever imprinted into my mind after I posed the question to the class – would you choose immortality over death? He shrugged without hesitation to suggest that it was really no contest at all. He asserted that he would unequivocally choose death. It was a valiant statement from a terminally ill child to offer mortality as the better alternative. His justification was that we need to make do with the time we are given. There is an excerpt from the book that says “Do not be afraid of death, but the unlived life.” I have feared death, but more importantly, I have been far too content
with the complacency of my own existence. The great tragedy rests in the latter, as it is the avoidable path. It was shortly thereafter that I faced my own catastrophic hardships of life. A failed marriage left me feeling devastated and afraid as I stood at the doorstep of homelessness and financial insecurity. Loneliness festers in the quietness of the night. I have wept into the darkness, only for my cries to be left unanswered. I have lost much but have gained more through the process of grief. It brought me an opportunity to rebuild myself better than I was before. I thought back to the list of my 100 things. I retrieved it from my drawer and I began my journey - not of life, but of living. I started with guitar lessons and a marathon. The guitar lessons made my fingers hurt, but I learned a few things along the way. I mostly discovered that I am horrible at playing the guitar. The marathon was probably one of the most physically grueling but rewarding achievements of my life. The hours I spent running on the road offered me time to heal and sort out my business. On October 6, 2013, I ran my heart out and concluded my 26.2 mile endeavor. I will never forget that moment of crossing the finish line and hearing the crowd cheer. My body was battered, but my soul was completely ignited like a phoenix reborn and rising up from the ashes.

“I always wonder why birds choose to stay in the same place when they can fly anywhere on the earth. Then, I ask myself the same question.” - Harun Yahya More recently, travel has moved to the forefront of my agenda. I grew up in the awe-inspiring wilderness of Montana; however, the seclusion has fueled my need to see and experience the world. I began with taking a trip through the desert so that I could meander my way to Texas. I don’t know that I would recommend this for everyone, but I slept in my car at truck stops just for the sake of making the trip all the more interesting. I drove each day into the wee hours to watch the sun fade into dawn like a masterpiece into the distance of where the sky kisses the face of a brazen mountain. I
I went home and I established a list that was comprised of the top 100 things that I want to experience in my life. I gave no regard to how outlandish or unattainable they may have seemed at the time.

My eyes were open and my heart was full as I awoke each morning to unveil Emily Dickinson’s words: “I’ll tell you how the sun rose, -- a ribbon at a time”. I was witness to nature’s portraits that were so beautiful that it was an impossibility to hold back the raw emotion of the moment. Tears streamed down my face as I stood at the threshold between night and day. When I wrote my list, I made sure to include items that were just at the cusp of outlandish but remained plausible. I stumbled many years ago upon a brochure for swimming with dolphins. I thought “why not?” and placed this adventure on my list, but it remained in the “highly unlikely” category in the back of my mind. I hung that brochure on my refrigerator where it served as a reminder for seven years. I had decided that there would be no harm

dream, never could I fully envision swimming with dolphins and under no circumstance did I think I would ever find love. There I was, caught in the elegant rapture of the beauty of life. My father used to tell me to do my best with what I’ve got. I know that I haven’t fully hit the mark on all of my goals. At 6 feet tall, I didn’t make a very good wakeboarder, but I kept trying until I was able to make it out of the water. When you catch the toe-side edge of a wakeboard, the lake’s surface at 20 mph feels less like water and more like concrete. The experience was sufficient enough for me to cross it off of my list. I have accepted that the idea is not that of mastery but of effort. I’ve had to make peace with the past. I have struggled with forgiveness and letting things go, but I continue to be a work in progress. The most valuable component to my happiness has been learning to surrender and knowing when to let go. I deplore the process of grieving, but there is no path to circumvent the condition and true healing does not allow for us to skip steps. There is no guarantee of happiness in
life, only sorrow as we move through the lines of our own Shakespearean tragedy. Suffering is the thread that intertwines the fibers of all humanity. I am in bewilderment of how my life has unfolded before my eyes. I have felt the searing pain of loss like wind removed from a sail, but there is opportunity for growth and beauty in every moment. We have this vision and anticipation of how we think our life will go and then we experience the callous reality. I’m learning the importance of being present and rejoicing in the moment. All we have is today; the here and now. It is important to accept that tomorrow is out of our control while maintaining a sense of hope. It’s exciting to think about the potential that arises from the breath of dawn on a new day. I think about what is yet to come. I want to finish my novel, eat weird food, dance, skydive, and hold the hand of my love under the brilliance of an aurora borealis as it pirouettes across the night sky. If I finish all of my items, then I will write one hundred more.

Fall Arrivals TAKE A HINT FROM MOTHER NATURE WITH CLASSIC FALL COLORS.
BY SARAH POLYAKOV.
It’s September and back-toschool shopping or freshening up fall wardrobes is on everyone’s mind. The good news is that many colors traditionally associated with fall look good year-round, but the coming months provide you with the opportunity to rock them. So, be a stunner from September through Thanksgiving with shades of yellow, brown, cream, and orange. All About the Cut The key to really rocking fall hues has to do with the cut of the piece. While some might be thinking a standard, orange turtleneck, the threads featured for fall 2015 provide so much more imagination than that. Donna Karan is doing chunky, medium brown, militarystyle trench coats with large front pockets. Giambattista Valli is offering cream-colored mini dresses with long, puffy sleeves, PeterPan collars, finished with gold embellishments. Marni is mixing it up with colors and textures — the collection offers a geometrically cut, sleeveless tunic made of half orange faux fur and half black velvet. Mix It Up Another trend I am seeing is mixing traditional fall colors with summer colors or styles. Alexander McQueen has fashioned an enchanting off-the-shoulder black mini dress with long, embellished, puffy sleeves, orange and red accents, black beads, and black leather. The style of the dress says summer staple, but

the color scheme says Belle of the Halloween Ball. Plaids Plaids are always in style for fall, but there is a lot of mixing of printed plaids and color schemes. Chanel, Stella Jean, and Vivienne Westwood are unashamedly pairing clashing plaids using both non-matching colors and patterns. One of the examples of such a pairing features a square plaid shirt in red, paired with diamond shaped plaid pants in gray and white. This is an up-tothe-moment way to wear plaids. Old School Miu Miu is building on previous trends and old-school fall clothing and colors. In one runway outfit, they paired a printed, orange trench coat with a bright yellow mini skirt, and a dark chocolate shirt with sheer overlay. On a Budget Of course, anything trends shown on the runway can easily be emulated by purchasing new pieces of clothing from local stores. Once you know the trends, you can easily shop for pieces that are inspired by the trend and pair pieces and color schemes the same way they are paired on the runway. So, whether you are doing back-to-school shopping or simply looking for new pieces to freshen your wardrobe, be sure to hit local stores for the perfect fall look.

Journey of Remembrance A JOURNEY THROUGH PARKINSON’S DISEASE.
BY A.C. WOOLNOUGH.

I remember 1957. It was my first exposure to Parkinson’s disease (PD) even though I didn’t know it at the time. There was a sudden hush every time Mr. Crawford, our landlord and family friend, was nearby. Mr. C., as we called him, would shuffle haltingly with a cane, stopping entirely on occasion, before resuming his glacial advance. In addition, his arms appeared to shake, and it looked like he was rolling a pill between his fingers and thumb. Sometimes another adult would shepherd him along. No one told us kids what was happening; they just murmured, “Poor Mr. Crawford.” I remember 1995. That was the year I understood Mr. Crawford had had PD. 1995 was when I learned my father had Parkinson’s. His symptoms were classic: tremors, slurred

speech, and inability to clothe or bathe himself. Eating was a frustrating experience that involved time and a great deal of patience. Combined with diabetes, gout and a host of minor maladies, it wasn’t long before my father required full-time care in a nursing facility. I remember 2012. Tremors in my left hand became apparent. Despite my efforts to hide them from my wife so she would not become concerned, it was obvious the tremors were getting worse, and I needed to see a doctor. Within a year or so, there was no question I had Parkinson’s disease and was formally diagnosed by a “movement disorder specialist”− a neurologist with specialized training − in early 2014. Following a brief period of denial

and self pity, I became determined to learn as much as possible about PD. Unfortunately, much of what I learned was not positive. PD is chronic and progressive. There is no cure. The drugs designed to ameliorate symptoms have their own, occasionally severe, side effects. Some people opt for “deep brain stimulation” where electrodes are inserted into the brain stem akin to a pacemaker for the brain. Tremors don’t appear until one-half to three-quarters of the dopamine-producing cells in the substantia nigra region of the brain have already died. Finally, the cause of PD is unknown, and the only 100 percent foolproof way to prove one has PD is an autopsy, something most of us are willing to avoid as long as possible. What surprised me the most was learning there is a plethora of non-movement symptoms associated with PD. These include depression, anxiety, apathy, constipation, sleep issues, vision problems and loss of the sense of smell. There is some good news. The cheapest, and perhaps most effective, therapy is exercise. Along with improving movement and balance, exercise may have a “neuroprotective benefit” that slows the progression of PD. There are
dozens, if not hundreds, of on-going studies looking at causes, preventions, treatments and cures. The government (National Institutes of Health and Department of Defense for example) and PD organizations such as the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation help fund this research. I remember 2015. This is the year I became determined to live with PD and not be defined or dominated by it. Yes, my tremors have increased; yes, my speech has softened, and no I can no longer smell my wife’s perfume. But I can recognize my apathy and choose to be active and social. I can choose to inform and educate others about PD. I can participate in numerous research studies. I can cherish and celebrate my wife and caregiver, Pamela. I can maintain a sense of humor − by the way − if you hand me a glass of milk and wait a minute, I can make you a milkshake. Most communities have a support group for PwP’s (people with Parkinson’s) and their caregivers. More information is available from Parkinson’s Disease Foundation (pdf.org) or the Michael J. Fox Foundation (michaeljfox. org). Although Sandpoint does not currently have a support group, please contact the
author at acwooly@gmail.com. He is working to organize a Sandpoint PD support group. A.C. Woolnough spent 37 years in public education as teacher and principal in California, Idaho and Alaska, including nine years at Sandpoint High School. In 2015, he underwent three days of training to become a Parkinson’s Disease Foundation (PDF) Research Associate and was appointed to the PDF People with Parkinson’s Advisory Council. In addition, he is an Assistant (ID) State Director for the Parkinson’s Action Network, an advocacy group working with Congress to promote neurological research.

Your Goals Are Our Priority!
Got Abs? ABSOLUTELY THE BEST ABDOMINAL RE-TRAINING EXERCISE EVER! BY CHRISTINA RUST, DPT, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY.
As a physical therapist and yoga instructor, I have many family, friends and clients ask me how to get rid of their “gut.” Often times, doing good old situps just doesn’t work. And please, do not waste your money on TV gimmicks like the Ab Crunch, or the Ab muscle stimulator, etc. The following information is yours absolutely free! You don’t have to give me a credit card number or your first born child. All you have to do is actually do this exercise! What most people don’t realize about the abdominal muscles is that they can contract both directions. That is, you can push your stomach out or you can pull it in. Try it now. Place one hand on the sternal notch where your ribs meet in the front. Then place your other hand on your pubic bone in the midline. Push your stomach muscles out, then pull them in. It may be more difficult to pull in, but these muscles are designed to do both. With perfect alignment, the abdominal wall should be in line directly between these two anatomical points. The abdominal muscles consist of four distinct layers, the rectus abdominis, the internal obliques, the external obliques and the transverse abdominis. What happens to the body when you develop a “gut”? The abdominal muscles biomechanically contract easier in an outward direction. It is more difficult for them to contract in, especially if there is something in the way, such as internal organs and fat. They simply become lazy. Over time, they also become stretched out. Your internal organs then fall down into the space that’s available. Internal organs must stay padded, so our bodies lay down fat inside the abdominal cavity. Now, it’s even harder for the abdominal muscles to contract in.
The Upward Abdominal Lock or Bind is referred to in yoga as “Uddiyana Bandha.” If you practice this every day, you can re-train your abdominal muscles to contract inward, instead of out and stimulate the reabsorption of the fat that has accumulated around your internal organs.
Sandpoint’s Only Full Size WarmWater Therapy Pool
Step 1 Stand with your feet slightly apart. Lean over with your torso rounded forward, knees bent, hands resting on your knees. Learn the bind first with your torso rounded forward and then, after getting some experience, practice the bind standing upright, hands on hips. Step 2 Inhale deeply through your nose, then exhale quickly and forcibly, also through your nose (or pursed lips). Contract your abdominal muscles fully to push as much air as possible out of your lungs. Then relax your abdominals. Step 3 Perform what’s called a “mock inhalation”; that is, expand your rib cage as if you were inhaling, but don’t actually inhale. The expansion of the rib cage (without the inhalation) sucks the abdominal muscles and viscera up into the thorax and hollows the belly and actively lifts navel, toward the spine. Step 4 Hold the bind for five to 15 seconds. Then slowly release the abdominal grip and inhale normally. Perform three to 10 rounds, depending on your capacity, with one or more normal breaths between each round.

The Ins and Outs of Weight DISCOVER THE ELEMENTS TO THE WEIGHT LOSS EQUATION.
Forever we’ve heard doctors, nurses, dietitians and personal trainers tell us to “eat less, move more” and weight loss will ensue. But how come for some, it doesn’t? All too often I find myself across the desk from a patient who claims to eat the right foods, in the right portions, at the right time of day and exercises daily, to boot! If this is all true, shouldn’t weight just be melting off? Energy balance, the delicate relationship between calories consumed versus energy expended, is not as simple as “calories in, calories out.” There are so many factors that contribute to how much energy (calories) our body uses at rest and during activity. Depending on those factors and what is coming “in,” we can either be conservative or quite liberal with our energy stores.
BY DARCI BARMAN, MSN, RDN, LD, REGISTERED DIETITIAN NUTRITIONIST.
Listed below are seven major elements to the weight-loss equation to help those struggling with weight to gain a better understanding of their energy balance.
Stress Eliminating stress from your life is nearly impossible.
1) BMR, or basal metabolic rate, is the energy required to maintain the body’s basic metabolic functioning such as respiration, body temperature regulation and digestion. This number is based on your height, weight, sex and age. Knowing this number gives you a baseline to work off of.
80
LIVINGLOCAL
2) Activity Factor – Based on how active you are in your daily life and what your exercise regimen is, multiplying your BMR times an activity factor is what gives you a resting metabolic rate — the amount of calories you need to sustain your lifestyle. The best way to figure this out is go to morekale.com and enter your information. 3) Body Composition – We all know muscle weighs more than fat, but we don’t realize it burns triple the calories! Women with 30 percent or less and men with 20 percent or less body fat need more energy. 4) Sleep – This may seem somewhat irrelevant to weight, but our bodies do a LOT while we’re counting sheep. Fat cells turn into muscle, we repair tissues and hormones return to a balanced set point. Make it a top priority to get at least seven hours of sound sleep per night. 5) Hormones – Speaking of hormones… Whether it’s sex hormones like estrogen, progesterone or testosterone, the stress hormone cortisol or hunger and satiety hormones like leptin and ghrelin, if any are out of balance, weight is likely an issue. This is one that is commonly overlooked but can be the biggest game changer. 6) Stress – A wrecking ball all it’s own! Stress contributes to imbalances in

hormones, poor quality of sleep, cravings for sugar, fat and salt, and clouds our judgment to make healthy lifestyle decisions. Eliminating stress from your life is nearly impossible, so be armed with at least two (healthy) stress-coping strategies.
There are so many factors that contribute to how much energy (calories) our body uses at rest and during activity.
7) History of Dieting – If you have been on every diet since the invention of spandex, your metabolism is likely smoldering. Your body believes there is only feast or famine and treats every morsel of food like the last (ie: storing it for later use as fat). This is a more complicated hurdle to leap – it involves analyzing your liver function, detoxification pathways and micronutrient capacity. The Best Local Eats
Go Natural. Stay Healthy. NATURAL SNACKS MAKE NUTRITIOUS MEALS.
Three square meals a day are a thing of the past. Busy schedules, diverse dietary preferences and the flow of modern life necessitate more flexible and convenient meals. Luckily, snacking is in the midst of a revolution. Traditional snacks like chips and pretzels have given way to bigger, better and healthier options that deliver both convenience and nutrition in one tasty package. Whether clean-label, organic, vegan or nutrient-added, it’s up to ingredient suppliers and manufacturers to develop products that meet all of these demands. That’s certainly a tall order. While there are no standard requirements for clean label snacks, naturally derived gums, hydrocolloids and colors are generally accepted in such applications and have become increasingly popular. You might see these ingredients listed as carrageenan, a soluble fiber from red seaweed, or cellulose gel, which is a refined plant fiber. In many foods and beverages, these ingredients improve shelf life and nutritional value without diminishing taste — like giving drinkable low-fat yogurt that distinctive creamy consistency with every sip. They also prove quite functional in products that meet strict dietary requirements, like gluten-free and vegetarian options. Hydrocolloids and gums like carrageenan, alginates and cellulose gel can be sustainably

sourced from nature and are perfectly suited for vegetarian and vegan foods. Either by improving the flavor and fullness of meatless sausage or producing non-dairy ice cream with that definitive indulgence and delectability, these ingredients are making new snacking options both possible and palatable. Reducing the number of ingredients in a recipe is one challenge and, more recently, adding ingredients has become another. We want foods and beverages with added value, but it’s important to understand that introducing vitamins or nutrients to any product can significantly affect flavor and texture. Enriched, shelf-stable snacks that boast added protein need a stabilizer to maintain the quality of the product. Without the added ingredients like carrageenan, similar products might separate, taste chalky or be less effective than their claims imply. Food companies are adapting their product formulations and rolling out new products to meet demand for healthy snacking solutions. Naturally derived ingredients that help reduce fat and sugar content but maintain product integrity are changing the way we snack. They deliver that indulgent experience we all appreciate. TAILGATING THE NORTHWEST
Experience college football up close By Colin Anderson Fall means football, and there’s no shortage of great action in the Northwest. We have many beautiful campuses, unique stadiums with red and blue turf, tailgating by boat, former national champions, and a whole lot more. There’s nothing like the buzz around a college campus on a crisp fall Saturday afternoon. And even if your alma mater might be across country, there’s no shame in rooting for another regional team, rivalries withstanding! Just taking in the sites of game day is a blast, and we are fortunate to have some of the most interesting stadiums in the country close by. University of Montana Location: Missoula, Montana

About the Team: The question for all Eastern Eagle fans is whether or not their high power aerial attack will continue without quarterback Vernon Adams. “Big Play” VA transferred to Pac 12 power Oregon for his senior season, however star receivers Cooper Kupp and Shaq Hill are back. Head coach Beau Baldwin has turned Eastern into a power at the FCS level with a National Championship in 2010 and Big Sky Championships in 2012, 2013 and 2014. Did you Know? About the Team: The Huskies are a real wild card team this year after losing big contributors on defense to the draft as well as replacing their quarterback. Head Coach Chris Peterson opens the season at Boise State, the school in which he helped propel into the national spotlight. Did you know? The Vandals will definitely be tested this year facing off against perennial powers Auburn and USC. They will also rack up plenty of frequent flier miles with trips to southern states Alabama, Arkansas and New Mexico. Junior Austin Rehkow might be the best punter in the nation, and becoming bowl game eligible is the goal for this program. Did you know?
