Bonner General Health Immediate Care
PUBLISHER So Long Summer SEPTEMBER IS HERE, and the long hot days of summer will soon be a distant memory. Getting back into a new routine can be challenging, but there are ways to make it easier on the whole family. We all seem to lead busy lives. Kids have homework, extracurricular activities, sports and more. As parents, we may feel as though we are constantly in the car going from one place to another, leaving little time for some quality moments spent with our kids.
When you need care quickly, but don’t need an emergency room, Bonner General Health Immediate Care is open seven days a week for urgent and minor care needs.
Why not do something to make this year a little easier and create memories at the same time? Plan a time each week, whether it is during the week or on the weekend, that is set aside exclusively for just you and your family. Kids will know ahead of time so that they can plan around that time. Pick up the kids after practice and go out for pizza. Maybe plan a Saturdaymorning hike. Take a picnic to the park, or during the winter months, pack up the ski gear and head up to the mountain. To make it easier on you, try planning the week’s meals ahead of time to ensure you aren’t running to the grocery store a few times a week after work or on your lunch hour. Time seems to slip away so quickly, and I am a firm believer in devoting as much time as we can to family while we still can. If you are at a loss of ideas for how to spend some quality time together, take a look at our calendar in this publication and online. And remember, making memories does not have to cost money. It is the time that is spent with one another that will create traditions and memories that will last a lifetime.

Dustin and his wife recognized the benefits of raising their family in a small community and when the opportunity presented itself, he applied for a position at Pend Oreille Surgery Center. He joined the team in April, 2016 and quickly gained the trust and appreciation of his co-workers who commend him for being “consistently positive and an awesome team player”. Dustin attended Spokane Community College graduating with his Associates Degree in Nursing in 2010. He worked in an ambulatory surgery center in Spokane for 3 years before coming to POSC where he moves fluidly between preop and postop areas as well as OR circulator and scrub. His patients, the staff as well as the physicians recognize his skill and appreciate his willingness to step in wherever needed; all of which has led to his nickname “The Dustin of all trades” and his selection as EOQ. Thank you Dustin for all that you do and for your commitment to quality cost effective patient care!

FEAR COLOR?
INTRODUCE COLOR TO YOUR HOME THROUGH PAINT, PILLOWS AND MORE!
DO YOU FEAR COLOR? Are you too chicken to splash some paint on your wall because it may be too bold or trendy? The good news is that paint is one of the least expensive things to change and it’s one of the easiest things to test out before you commit. Most paint stores will sell quartsize containers of any color, allowing you to paint a small section of your wall and observe the color in different light throughout the day. That way, you can live with it before you commit. Other ways to introduce color would be to use patterns and bold colors in accent pieces. Often times, adding that splash of color or texture is all a room needs to really pull everything together. There are many ways to introduce that color accent. Throw pillows, furniture, backsplashes, tile accents, island cabinetry, glass and more. Just remember, not everything has to match. In fact, when you match everything, it becomes too monochromatic and you lose a lot of the color simply because there’s no contrast. If you have dark cabinets, you should contrast that with lighter countertops. If you have

ADD A SPLASH OF COLOR
dark flooring, you can contrast that with painted or a lighter stain color on the cabinets. In the kitchen, lots of folks are going with a painted island whereas the perimeter cabinets are a stained wood. Adding stain glass or a pattern glass in your entry door, cabinets or table tops would be another way to introduce color and textures. Besides paint and furniture, window coverings are another great way to add colors and textures. It’s amazing how much a pattern or color will pop with natural light illuminating it. Most have features that allow you to still see out and won’t encroach on your views. There are just a few things to remember when it comes to adding color and increasing the boldness factor at your home because there are things you definitely want to avoid. • Using too many accent pillows. I’m talking so many you can’t sit on the sofa or it takes you half an hour to unload your bed. It’s simple. Select a few pillows

of varying sizes, shapes and patterns and display them together. • Too many trinkets. If you have to move things out of the way on a side table so you can set your drink down, you may have too much display. Select a few and store the rest. During seasonal changes, swap them out. • Too many patterns and textures. You don’t wear stripes with plaid right? Same goes for your house; you shouldn’t have competing patterns or textures. If the sofa has a pattern, select solid color pillows. If the wall has patterned wallpaper, go with simple solid or complementary window covering. In short, don’t be afraid to add color or textures, and if you question whether or not it’s a good choice, seek out and ask a professional for their input.

And “awareness” is an appropriate designation because many people remain unaware of the many ways in which life insurance can help families meet their key financial goals. Here are three of the biggest of these objectives, as seen through the eyes of a hypothetical couple, Jim and Joan: • Pay off mortgage – Jim and Joan have a 30-year mortgage. If one of them dies well before that mortgage is paid off, could the other one afford to keep making payments to remain in the house with the children? It might be quite difficult—many families absolutely need two incomes to pay a mortgage, along with all the other costs of living. At the very least, the death of either Jim or Joan would likely put an enormous financial strain on the surviving spouse. But with the proceeds of a life-insurance policy, the survivor could continue making the house payments—or possibly even pay the mortgage off completely, depending on the size of the policy and other financial considerations. • Educate children – Higher education is important to Jim and Joan, and they’d like to see both of their young children eventually go to college. Of course, college is expensive: For the 2016-17 school year, the average cost (tuition, fees, room and board) was about $20,000 for in-state students at public universities and more than $45,000 for private schools, according to the College Board. And these costs are likely to continue climbing. Jim and Joan have started putting money away in a tax-advantaged 529 savings plan, but if something were to happen to one of them, the surviving spouse might be hard pressed to continue these savings at the same level—or at any level. But the proceeds
SandpointLivingLocal.com
24
of a life-insurance death benefit could be enough to fund some, or perhaps all, of the college costs for Jim and Joan’s children. • Provide for family’s future – Jim and Joan’s future income is their most valuable asset as they continue working. However, an unexpected death could leave this dualincome family with a single income that may not cover all financial obligations and retirement contributions—or even preserve the family’s current lifestyle. Life insurance could help cover these needs. Plus, the death benefit to the family may be tax-free. Clearly, a life-insurance policy could allow Jim or Joan to continue on with life, despite, of course, the devastating emotional loss of a partner. But how much insurance should they own? You might read that most people need a death benefit of seven to 10 times their annual income. This might be a good starting point, but everyone’s situation is different. You should consider all factors—including liabilities, income replacement, final expenses and education—to get an accurate picture of how much insurance is appropriate. A financial professional can help you with this calculation. During Life Insurance Awareness Month, take some to time review your insurance situation. You may already have some life insurance, but it’s a good idea to review your coverage to make certain the amount and type of insurance is still appropriate for your needs. As we’ve seen, the right coverage can make a huge difference in the lives of your loved ones.

FELINE ASTHMA RISKY BUSINESS FOR SOME CATS BY DR. DAWN MEHRA, NORTH IDAHO ANIMAL HOSPITAL
A PROGRESSIVE CONDITION
WHEN CLIENTS DESCRIBE THEIR CAT’S chronic cough, they describe him/her hunching close to the ground, extending the neck and “honking or gagging.“ Most folks chalk that up to hairballs as the likely cause. Besides hairballs, a cough can also be mistaken for respiratory infection or heart disease. North Idaho Animal Hospital veterinarians will invariably include asthma as an important possible cause. Because asthma can affect each patient differently and can often lead to a lethal (deadly) outcome if not treated appropriately, it is important to diagnose this condition quickly and accurately.
suffocation. Coughing and respiratory effort are its hallmarks. In humans, we know that while actual symptoms of asthma occur in episodes, the airways of the lung are diseased all the time. We do not know yet if feline airways are also diseased all the time or if the actual airway structural changes occur only when there are clinical signs of distress. Diagnosis: There is not one definitive technique to diagnose asthma, and veterinarians rely heavily on a solid history from clients. Oftentimes, usually in chronic situations, doctors can quickly observe the ravages of asthma on a radiograph or CT scan. Sometimes cells from a sample of airway tissue can help. Allergy testing is occasionally required. In the rare cases that all of the tests above are “normal,” veterinarians rely on therapy to diagnose lung disease. If a patient responds quickly to a corticosteroid or epinephrine injection, it is likely the patient is suffering from constricted airway disease—asthma.
Causes: Most researchers and clinicians agree that feline asthma is caused by an allergic reaction to inhaled allergens—particles that stimulate a cat’s immune system. Similar to humans, feline asthma causes a “hyper” inflammatory response which limits the ability of air to pass through the airway, thus causing breathing stress. Severe asthma attacks mimic

Because asthma can affect each patient differently and can often lead to a lethal (deadly) outcome if not treated appropriately, it is important to diagnose this condition quickly and accurately.
Treatment: Corticosteroids and bronchodilators are the standard of care for feline asthma sufferers. They come in all forms, pills, liquids injections and inhalers. The latter is my favorite for many reasons, the most important of which is the inhaler substance(s) are not systemically distributed—inhalers work primarily at the level of the lung. Other treatment modalities include omega-3 fatty acids, allergy injections (hyposensitization), immune modulators and of course filtering air. Prognosis: Feline asthma is often a progressive condition that fails to improve significantly over time. Affected cats may experience occasional asthmatic flare-ups that vary in intensity from mild to life threatening. Although cats can never be truly “cured, with early intervention and combining medication/supplements to minimize coughing and respiratory effort, owners can help their asthmatic cats live normal happy lives. MUCH MORE THAN A CAR SHOW

Injectors Car Club making a difference in the community. By Patty Hutchens
FOR THE LAST 18 YEARS, the Injectors Car Club of Sandpoint has been donating money to the community and having fun doing so! According to Club President Gary Vanhorn, nearly $40,000 has been donated over the years to various local charities including Bonner General Health Community Hospice, Toys for Tots, Community Cancer Services, Bonner Community Food Bank and the Senior Center, just to name a few. The proceeds they donate are raised through their annual Injectors Car Show, an event that will take place this year on September 9 in Downtown Sandpoint. “This is the reason we do the car show each year,” said Vanhorn, who has served as club president for the last nine years, “so we can give money to the charities.” The show draws approximately 120 cars each year, with the entries primarily coming from Montana, Washington and Idaho, as well as a handful from Canada. “We would really like to see as many cars as possible from Sandpoint this year,” said Vanhorn. “You’d be surprised at how many nice [collector] cars there are here.”

The show begins at 9am with awards being given out at 2pm. There are 20 classes where trophies are given, and it is one of the few judged shows in the area. People can register the day of the event beginning at 8am. The cost is $20 per car and includes a T-shirt donated by Les Schwab and NAPA Auto Parts. With so much community support, the cost to put on the show is minimal, allowing the club to give back even more money to local charities. One of those businesses that donates is O’Reilly Auto Parts, who covers the cost of the trophies. “That really makes a huge difference,” said Vanhorn. The show has something for everyone. Home Depot will be on hand to help the little ones build models. There will be raffles, live music, free ice cream, trivia and even a frozen T-shirt contest. Come and join the fun! HONORING THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED North Idaho resident travels to Normandy
By Patty Hutchens Photos by John Nitcy
WHEN JOHN NITCY visited the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, he had no idea it would inspire him the way it did. “There, I saw a movie called ‘Beyond All Boundaries,’” said Nitcy. “I then realized I did not know much about the history of World War II. I started thinking of ways I could help.”
“There were 82 on the wall from World War II,” said Nitcy. “And over half of them were buried overseas.” Nitcy then met a teacher from France while visiting the Bird Aviation Museum and Invention Center just south of Sandpoint. They kept in touch, and in honor of the 70th anniversary of the invasion of Normandy, Nitcy and his Honor Flight students made wreaths that were sent to Normandy.
He returned to his teaching job at Sandpoint High School and started an Honor Flight club at the high school. His first goal was to have his students raise money to help supplement the efforts of the Inland Northwest Honor Flight whose mission is to transport Inland Northwest war veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their service and sacrifices. But Nitcy quickly realized it was also an opportunity to educate the younger generation about the importance of our history and what the soldiers sacrificed.
The French teacher and her students laid them at the graves of the Sandpoint residents buried there, Lewis North and Frank Bradetich. There was also a large wreath that had poppies on it listing all the names of the World War II soldiers listed on the wall at Sandpoint’s Memorial Field. It was just one of the many great relationships created by the Honor Flight club. “One of the neat things that came from the club was the number of people who came and talked to me about World War II,” said Nitcy, referring to people who wanted to share their own stories or stories of their loved ones.
His journey began with a database project where two of his students recorded the names of the soldiers listed at Sandpoint’s War Memorial Field and had them research where these soldiers who died in combat were buried.

GOOD NEWS
A few years ago, Nitcy traveled to Washington, D.C. as a guardian on an Honor Flight, an experience he will never forget. “We hear all about statistics, but these are real people,” he said of those veterans he has met. But he still was eager to learn more about the history of World War II, specifically Normandy.
Nitcy was surprised at the vastness of everything. “The landing beaches were 45-miles long,” he said. “The same distance from Sandpoint to Coeur d’Alene.” The five-day tour was fast paced but extremely well organized. The group stayed above Omaha Beach and enjoyed not only the historical aspect, but also the opportunity to tour the region of Normandy.
“I had watched the movies ‘Band of Brothers’ and ‘Saving Private Ryan,’ and going to Normandy became part of my bucket-list items,” said Nitcy.
The reality of what happened on those beaches on June 6, 1944 is reinforced by the fact that little has changed since that day. With bomb craters, barbed wire, bullet holes in fences and massive guns still in place, one gets a real sense of what it must have been like during this infamous day.
So when he retired in June of this year, he traveled to Normandy, France, as part of a tour called Beyond Band of Brothers (BeyondBandOfBrothers. com). He, along with 28 others on his tour, toured the region and were touched by what they saw. “For three years I had read everything I could and watched everything I could about this time in history, but when I got there I realized I knew very little. Until you see it in person and stand where the soldiers stood, you cannot imagine its vastness,” said Nitcy, who now plans to re-read the books he read prior to his trip. “Imagine 14,000 paratroopers coming down behind the beaches in the middle of the night.”
The gratitude the French feel toward America is evident, as American flags are not only found along the beaches and in the cemetery, but throughout the region on buildings and other places. If there is one message Nitcy hopes to convey to others, it is to ask questions. “Veterans do not want to talk about their experience with many people. But many do want to talk about it with the people they love,” said Nitcy, who adds one student took his advice, and it created a whole new relationship with his grandfather. “In the end, it’s not the treaties and dates that are important; it’s to teach the kids what these people did for them.”
In the Normandy American Cemetery, there are 9,387 American soldiers buried there. Almost every grave has the date of death as June 6, 1944 or shortly thereafter. “Visiting the cemetery was definitely the highlight of my trip,” said Nitcy. “I have never seen a more beautiful piece of real estate. There is not a weed in the place. Normandy itself is absolutely beautiful. It’s quiet, green and rural. It’s hard to believe a conflict of that magnitude could happen there.”
Nitcy encourages anyone who has not seen the movie Honor Flight to do so. It has inspired him and his students to honor our veterans of all wars and has taught them about the sacrifices men and women have made. Note: While Nitcy has been in contact with the family of Frank Bradetich, he has not been able to locate any family of Lewis North. If anyone has information on where his family is, please contact our magazine and we will put you in contact with John Nitcy. For more information on Northwest Honor Flight, go to www.inwhonorflight.org
One thing that struck Nitcy is that the graves are lined up perfectly and all face America. “It was humbling to be there,” he said.

S U C IN FO SERVICE LEARNING Changing the World BY WENDY THOMPSON, FORREST BIRD CHARTER SCHOOL
WHAT SOCIAL SKILLS do you think today’s teenagers need to learn? Integrity? Empathy? Communication? In a world in which the consideration index seems to have plummeted, how can adults help to instill these crucial traits into our children? What if it were your job to do so? What would you do if you had 85 teenagers and six weeks to teach them social skills? How would you do it? Luckily, we had an idea. We wanted to rock our students’ worlds with kindness—for themselves and for others. The solution: Give unto others. It may sound a little bit strange, but at one local public school, Forest Bird Charter School, students spent more than a month serving others while simultaneously studying core classes. The assignment: Choose any area of service you are interested in, contact the supervisor, dedicate yourself to 20 to 40 hours of serving, work with teachers to coordinate lessons around your service, then do it. Students chose diversified community-service learning projects based on their own interests. If
you happen to walk downtown, notice the new Galaxy Whale in the Galaxy Alley, painted by students and supervised by art instructor Holly Walker. If you walk by the auxiliary volunteer desk at BGH, note the pictures of the students who spent hundreds of hours, collectively, giving of their time to patients and staff. students and the community,” said Boundary County Restorium student volunteer Derek Harlan. “Students get the opportunity to solve real-world problems with their time and energy and learn responsibility to themselves and others.” Students were all around the region, giving of their time, and in return, learning those valuable lessons of compassion, communication and empathy. Student Samantha Miller said, “It gave us a once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience something that others didn’t.” The result: 2,939 hours and 13 minutes. 367 eight-hour days: the number of combined days 85 teens gave of their time to serve others. On average, each student served nearly 37 hours during a month-long period of volunteering in Bonner and Boundary counties. On the educational side, “Project Based Learning (PBL) is a teaching method in which units are designed to investigate and solve authentic and complex questions, problems and challenges,” Misty Rains, science teacher, explained. Realizing there are hundreds of organizations, individuals and businesses in need of helping hands, the FBCS faculty designed an innovative
and invigorating PBL unit, marrying core learning standards and service learning.
“Volunteering has helped me to grow in character. I am a better person now than I was when I first started. I will definitely do it again,” said student Grace Michelsen.
“We created a project that challenged all of us,” said foreign language instructor Eric Fulgenzi. Student-driven curriculum including math, science, social studies, speech and art was integrated into each student’s choice of service. If a student chose to serve Bonner General Health, for instance, their curriculum delved farther into science, while one serving at Washington Elementary focused more on childhood development. Alexus Fryman, who volunteered for Mr. Warren at Farmin Stidwell Elementary explained, “I had the opportunity to experience what it was like to be an adult in a real-world setting.” Individualized learning reflected the service each student chose.
Not only did the PBL service unit result in many students’ growth in compassion and help to the community, it also helped some identify future careers. Several students walked away from their service knowing they would return to jobs. They had proven their abilities during their volunteerism. Others, like student Kevin, is resolved to pursue higher education so he can work in an ER. “We have a number of students who have received job offers from doing such a great job during their service. These students are getting excited about doing work! They are making contacts within the community. They are representing our school and philosophy with professionalism and dependability. It is great to see,” said teacher Misty Rains.
“This type of education and learning most closely resembles life outside of school. When we have an interest in something, say building a gardening box, we go out and research the most efficient and cost-effective way to do that in order to maximize our time. That is exactly what we pushed our students to do in this project,” explained Fulgenzi.
Teaching was a challenge. It was juggling 85 individualized curriculums, finding time to meet and pushing for mastery of content. Teacher Bonnie Jakubos said, “The students were able to see their teachers collaborating. It was a demonstration of teamwork that we wanted them to see. It was also a great learning experience for teachers.” During school hours, the “class” included all students working together in one room on their core classes. This non-traditional environment, although probably confusing to an onlooker, increased rapport and interaction among students and teachers. Veteran teacher Mark Webber commented, “This project opened my eyes
“This project has gotten students out of their comfort zones, pushed them to create new connections socially and cognitively, and has been as messy and beautiful as real life,” he noted. Service Learning pushed students beyond tasks: it helped to teach them lifetime values.

to the power of student-led instruction. Students were able to gain much more than what could be delivered from class instruction if they chose to challenge themselves.” Following the hours of service and collaborative instruction, students showcased their projects. Along with describing their service, many used time-lapse filming to demonstrate the evolution of their service learning. “Watching them present their projects and celebrate their service and contribution was as real as it could be. Witnessing students weave together the content areas seamlessly was a work of art,” said Lyndsay Holland, teacher. And for all, the one group who chose to serve by documenting the PBL Service Learning unit displayed a trailer of their film attributing the compilation of all students’ efforts. “The collaboration has been incredible. We built this monster of a project together … and it worked!” said Rains. “We can all contribute something to someone, whether it be money or food, but only a few can give their time,” said Ashton Thompson, student. “This project taught us that time is worth more than money, because you learn more morals and values if you read to a group of elderly people versus if you give them $100 each. We can all give money, but only good memories are created with time.” Student photographers: Kai Eagley, Lauren Roth, Kristen De Alba, Kiley Thomas, William Morton

Unlike what many may think, Nations’ book has little to do with numbers; it is a general interest book. “It has drama and history, and there are villains and heroes,” said Nations, who likened it to the story of the Titanic; we know the ending but the journey there is fascinating.
While all the crashes have certain similarities, the one thing Nations said surprised him the most in his research was that one person may be the hero in one crash but may play the role of the villain in a subsequent crash. He cites as an example Alan Greenspan, who played the hero in the 1987 crash but was seen as the villain in 2008 in the mortgage debacle. Another similarity among all five crashes is the fact that an external catalyst accompanied all, and it is surprising just what the catalyst may be. For instance, the “flash crash” of May 2010 was fostered by an event halfway around the globe in Greece. There are many things that will surprise you when reading Nations’ book, but I won’t spoil it for you. You can pick up a copy at Vanderfords in Sandpoint or on Amazon. Nations invites people to review his book online at Amazon.com. And as far as his next book goes, stay tuned! He definitely plans on starting another one soon. Thank you to Gateway Financial Partners for bringing Scott and Wendi Nations to Sandpoint and for providing an event that also benefits the youth in our community. It’s just another reason that makes Sandpoint a great place to live.

SHS FOOTBALL - A SUCCESS STORY IN THE MAKING COACH YARNO SAYS FOOTBALL IS MORE THAN THE WINS AND LOSSES BY PATTY HUTCHENS
PHOTOS ABOVE BY JASON DUCHOW PHOTOGRAPHY
The foundation stones for a balanced success are honesty, character, integrity, faith, love and loyalty. – Zig Ziglar SUCCESS. ASK SOMEONE TO DEFINE IT, and you will not get the same response twice. When it comes to coaching football, Sandpoint High School Head Coach George Yarno, Jr. said success does not come in the win-loss column; it is helping boys grow into young men who exhibit good moral character.
Unfortunately, Coach Yarno’s father passed away last year just prior to the Sandpoint Bulldog’s season.
Coach Yarno has grown up around football. His dad, George Yarno, Sr., played professional football for 13 years; 11 in the NFL and two for the USFL.
In visiting with Coach Yarno, it is clear his passion is not only football but working with kids as well. He has been part of very successful programs, including his most recent job at Highland High School in Pocatello where the team has won 10 state championships, two of which were under Coach Yarno. But in the end, Yarno said it is not about the wins and losses.
“My father was my hero. Everything about him is everything I want to be,” said Coach Yarno. “I have modeled my coaching style after him.”
“My dad played for Tampa Bay, Atlanta, Houston and Green Bay,” said George, Jr. His uncle, John Yarno, also played professional football with the Seattle Seahawks before going onto the USFL.

wins and losses will take care of themselves,” he said. “I only remember a couple of [football] scores. But I remember every coach that had an influence on me.” Going into his second year as head coach of the Sandpoint Bulldogs, Coach Yarno said fans can expect to see a few changes on the field. “The kids are excited. We are doing things offensively that will be different, and a number of the kids are loving it.” There are approximately 20 seniors and 30 juniors on varsity and roughly 35 sophomores on the junior varsity team. But football for this group does not start in September. Not even August. The coaches begin to prepare in April and hold spring practices in parts of May and June and then attended Border League Camp the week of June 18. “On June 25 we started lifting weights and running every week, Monday through Thursday, in the morning,” said Yarno, adding that while not all the kids showed up they
consistently had at least 35 athletes and some days as many as 50. Mandated by the state there was a “no contact” week the week of July 31 to August 4, and then practices began on August 7 running each weekday from 9 to 11am and 3:30 to 5:30pm. The team had two games before school started, and Coach Yarno said he hopes the season ends the week before Thanksgiving. “That will mean we are in the state championship,” said Yarno.
Creativity is something that Coach Yarno emphasizes, and this will be demonstrated on the offensive plays with more formations and shifts. When asked what he sees as the team’s strength, Coach responded, “We are loaded athletically, especially in the skilled positions.” He added that the defensive line, with all seniors with the exception of one junior, will also be very strong.
In addition to overseeing 120 football players, 15 coaches and nearly 300 parents, Coach Yarno also teaches strength and conditioning classes to the freshmen, upperclassmen and females at Sandpoint High School.
He has high hopes for quarterback Robbie Johnson, an athlete Coach Yarno said exhibits special qualities. “Athletes like him do not come along very often. If I do my job right, he should be player of the year.”
The coaching staff from varsity down to the freshmen team has a number of new faces, several of them young men who can evolve together as a staff for years to come.
Coach Yarno said the positions of linebacker and defensive back only have one returning starter, but that does not mean they are a weak link. “The kids who are stepping up should be really good,” he said.
“We’ve expanded the playbook a lot, and I am still committed to running the football,” said Coach Yarno of what fans can expect to see this season. “I will always emphasize running the ball and stopping the run on defense.”

look past your nose. You look at one week at a time.” In mid-September the team will travel to Alberta, Canada, to play a game. Since Canadian football differs from American, they will play two quarters of each. According to Coach Yarno, Canadian football has 12 men on the field as opposed to 11 in American football, and they can motion toward the line of scrimmage. “They also have bigger fields,” he said. Coach Yarno believes in allowing the players to vote on who they feel will best represent the team as captains. Prior to the season, the entire team votes on a captain from the offensive players, the defense and the special teams. “The coaches then will choose a fourth captain,” said Yarno.
looking forward to building an empire on that foundation,” said Coach Yarno, who adds that every player is a piece of the puzzle, and he is sure this team will surprise some people. His job as a coach and as a teacher is one Coach Yarno takes seriously. “If my boys leave my program a better person, that’s worth a state championship right there,” he said. “Our success is not measured by wins. It’s based on the men we produce and put back into our community. We want to develop good students and good citizens. If we have to skip a practice to go help someone in the community that needs us, that is what we will do. In the end, these boys will win at life, and that’s why we’re here.”
He and his assistant coaches are excited for the direction the Bulldogs are going and anxious to see what the season brings. “There is a good foundation here, and I’m

Health & Lifestyle LEARN TO ADAPT TO STRESS TO BECOME BETTER
Your Life, Your Terms By Susan Moore, Better Gym, Gig Harbor
STRESS. The name itself is synonymous with everything negative in our lives. We stress about our bills, kids, parents, jobs, traffic, food. The list goes on with factors that are both in and out of our control. But if you actually think about what stress really is, is it inherently bad?
We have been told for years that stress causes most illness; our happiness is of the utmost importance, and we need to put ourselves first so we can deal with everything else. This could be why we now see so much entitled behavior. We aren’t taught to cope but rather to avoid anything or anyone that causes stress and remove the negativity from our lives. If we do that, and live a stress-free life, how do we learn to adapt? How do we learn to cope? How do we improve?
Let’s look at this another way. How do our muscles grow? We subject them to external stress and they adapt. What kind and how much stress dictates our rate of adaptation. So if our bodies’ natural response is to adapt, why do we seem to crumble? If this is a learned behavior, do we have to accept it or can we emotionally adapt in the way our muscles do physically? I believe that we can take the stress and use it to our advantage.
Most research in the past that showed stress caused illness was missing one important variable: How did the subjects manage their stress? And what were the subjects’ coping mechanisms? More research has been done with these variables in mind and new information has been found.

Recent studies done by the University of Wisconsin-Madison and other places have shown stress itself doesn’t cause illness; it’s the changes in our physiological, emotional and behavioral responses when under stress that can lead to disease. Chronic stress is defined as a “state of prolonged tension from internal or external stressors, which may cause various physical manifestations—e.g., asthma, back pain, arrhythmias, fatigue, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcers, and suppress the immune system.” This is something that most of us have heard before and why we believe we are stressed and therefore suffer from (insert illness here). Now this is where the tough love comes in. Stop it! Do not accept the fate that our lives are stressful and we have to suffer through it. Our lives are the byproduct of our decisions. It isn’t the stress that gets us; it’s our lack of positive coping strategies and our belief that we deserve better. You only deserve better when you work to be better. Earn your better! Are you overweight? Quit eating food that doesn’t nourish your body. Do you have immobility? Move more! Are you tired? Gather more energy from the last two suggestions. We have the ability to change. Every action and every inaction has a consequence. Do not be a victim in your life. Meet your stress head on and do something about it. Realize that some things are out of your control—and that’s OK—but most things aren’t. As Ghandi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Every incredible person I have ever known in my life has been exposed to monumental stress. They have lived through truly horrible events, situations or years of struggle. They have come out the other side better. They are people of extraordinary character, and I value being a part of their lives. In contrast, most people I find difficult to be around are the ones who think the world owes them something and that life isn’t fair. They don’t want to work for anything and expect something for nothing. We all have to decide who we want to be and how we want to be remembered. How to successfully adapt to stress to be a better person: • Take responsibility for your actions. If you do it, own it. • Argue to be heard but never to win. • Treat people the way you want to be treated and never based on how they treat you. • Lead by example. • Train your body even if you think you can’t. • Spend less time trying to be happy and more time trying to be useful. • Be a person of your word. Integrity is not negotiable. • Be grateful every day. • Use your stress as fuel. Strength is a choice.
AQUATIC THERAPY
RECOVERY
JUMP IN THE POOL FOR FASTER RECOVERY BY CHRISTINA M. RUST, DPT, CORNERSTONE PHYSICAL THERAPY
WATER PROVIDES THE SAFEST and fastest way to begin the recovery process for most orthopedic injuries, especially those involving the ankles, knees and back. How many times have you heard from friends and doctors, “Stay off of that sprained ankle until the swelling goes down” or “Just elevate and ice it for a few days”? What you may not be aware of is that the scarring process begins within seven hours of an acute injury, which usually involves tearing of soft tissue fibers. The most common injuries involve muscles, tendons and ligaments. A “strain” is considered tearing of muscle fibers or tendons; a “sprain” is considered injury to a ligament. There are three basic categories of strain/ sprains: Type I - Overstretching of the tissue, which results in small tears within the muscle belly, tendon or ligament Type II - Partial tearing, which can often be the most painful of the three and can take months and sometimes years to completely heal Type III - A complete rupture or tear of a muscle, tendon or ligament; often a significant amount of swelling or deformation is present in the absence of severe pain. If not properly diagnosed and rehabilitated correctly, a simple Type I strain/sprain can lead to an early end to a sports season, chronic pain, chronic instability and premature arthritic changes in the involved joint. Because weight bearing on the involved part is often painful or unstable, the athlete is advised to “stay off of it.” Water provides the ideal environment for accelerated healing. Gentle range of motion (ROM) should begin within hours of acute injury. If delayed more than 48 hours, scar tissue can quickly overproduce, leading to tightening of the joint capsule and/ or weakening of muscle fibers. Additionally,
Your Goals Are Our Priority!
if the injured part is overstressed by load bearing, the healing tissue can re-tear, thus prolonging recovery and resulting in chronic pain and inflammation. The properties of water that accelerate the healing process include: Buoyancy - This is one of the key features of aquatic rehab. Buoyancy decreases the load on painful, inflamed joints. It allows for movement of the rest of the body so strength, endurance and speed are not lost during the recovery process. It also allows for more normal movement patterns, such as running, while decreasing the gravitational pull. Hydrostatic pressure - Water pressure increases with depth, resulting in significantly improving blood flow and decreasing swelling. A body in water produces a different physiological response than it does on dry land. For instance, warm water will increase the cardiovascular demand and improve respiratory function. That means you can keep up your cardiovascular endurance without overstressing the injured part during the recovery process. Fluid Dynamics - Water provides a unique environment for strengthening in all planes of motion with heightened proprioceptive feedback from surrounding muscles, tendons, ligaments and joint surfaces. Increasing speed of movement in water directly increases the resistive push and pull without putting weight through the injured joint. There are many experienced physical therapists who can help you quickly recover from just about any sports injury. So jump in the water and get wet!

SUPPORTING OUR ATHLETES BGH OFFERS A TEAM OF VOLUNTEERS TO HELP PREVENT AND TREAT INJURIES
BY BONNER GENERAL HEALTH
H E ATLETAHM YW OT RI K P PHOTO BY ROBIN HANSEN
FOR ANY PARENT WHO HAS a child in sports, you know how important it is to receive immediate medical treatment in the event of an injury. Fortunately for Sandpoint High School (SHS), Dr. Doug Cipriano and Dr. Brent Leedle of Bonner General Orthopedics have a combined 28-plus years of volunteering their time to Sandpoint football. Dr. Leedle also holds a certificate of added qualification in sports medicine. Over the years, the physicians have collaborated with physical therapists and athletic trainers to support our high school athletes.
this team will provide support to all SHS athletes.
This year, there is a collaborative effort among a team of health care providers to ensure that athletes receive comprehensive treatment and are able to return to play as soon as possible. Bonner General Health has partnered with SHS and hired Bailey Faber, an athletic trainer who recently moved to the area.
Morton will accompany Faber to all the home varsity football games offering his assistance.
“I chose to work at the high school level so I can see the athletes grow and help them progress through these formative years,” said Faber.
Having a support team that works together on a day-to-day basis is definitely an advantage.
Joining Dr. Cipriano, Dr. Leedle and Faber is Physical Therapist Sam Morton of Performance Physical Therapy, who volunteers his time to the athletes on the field. In addition to being a physical therapist, Morton is also a certified strength and conditioning specialist. Together,
Faber’s role will include being at the high school to conduct day-to-day injury prevention measures, and she will be on hand at home games also providing injury prevention measures and acute injury care. When there are multiple athletic events at the same time, Faber will attend the event with the highest probability of catastrophic injury. Should an injury occur at another home event, she will go to that location to treat the athlete.
“I played college football and have always been drawn to working with athletes,” said Morton. “I want to use my strength (as a physical therapist) to serve the community.”
“To have a full-service medical team from Bonner General Health makes a lot of sense,” said Kris Knowles, Assistant Principal for Student Activities and Athletics. “Dr. Cipriano and Dr. Leedle volunteer their orthopedic expertise because they care about the athletes in Sandpoint.”
SandpointLivingLocal.com
56
In addition to prevention and treatment of injuries, Faber will also conduct Impact Testing, a pre-concussion screening, on all incoming freshman athletes or other new athlete. According to Knowles, there is a system in place to ensure that all students go through this important screening. Faber will ensure a strict protocol is followed before a student that suffers a concussion is allowed to return to play. An athlete who suffers a concussion can receive treatment from the Bonner General Health team, the only team in the area that can see a concussion through from initial diagnosis through the treatment phase and to return to play. However, only a physician can authorize an athlete to return to play. Dr. Leedle and Dr. Cipriano are committed to supporting the student athletes at SHS. If an athlete is injured during the week, they most certainly get an appointment right away. “We make sure players are seen the same day,” said Dr. Cipriano. They both also work closely with the coaches and are available to consult with them on injuries the players have suffered. “I always answer when a coach calls,” said Dr. Leedle. “I enjoy working with the athletes and giving back what I can to the community.”

Home Office THE BENEFITS OF WORKING FROM HOME By Jani Gonzalez
B
ack in 2010, the company I was working for on the East Coast did a pilot study on working from home. They work with sensitive information which naturally made them reticent to having employees working remotely. But when they established a secure way to connect from home, they first allowed employees with seven or more years of tenure to work from home one day a week. Not even a year later, they allowed all employees to work one day a week from home. They established clear rules, schedules and trained workers. It made a huge difference in our work weeks as there was at least one day we didn’t have to trek in.
Gallup Poll reports on more happy at-home workers
On a larger scale since then, working from home has become more commonplace and no longer the role of a self-employed business owner. Telecommuting jobs are moving away from the scam aspect (“Make thousands from home!”) and into a legitimate way to work for corporations. The ubiquity of technology has made it possible for us to work remotely from home. Though technology has blurred the lines between home and work in some way, it’s a trade many of us are willing to make in return for an easier commute and improved worklife balance.
The Post credited that increase in engagement to better Internet connectivity and ease in videoconferencing. Companies are seeing the benefits and helping their employees make the transition. This workplace trend is not just a U.S. one either. FlexJobs, one of the more renowned telecommuting job boards, reported that the U.K., Saudi Arabia, Japan and Turkey have companies taking measures to allow more flexible work schedules. Turkey’s government has passed policies protecting telecommuting workers from discrimination. Toyota in Japan is allowing one-third of its workers to work remotely.
SandpointLivingLocal.com
A recent Gallup Poll published earlier this year showed an uptick in the number of people working from home. The Washington Post reported that 43 percent of the 7,000 people surveyed work from home, an increase of 4 percent since the last poll in 2012. The poll also showed that people are working more days from home too—between three and four days from home. The workers who spent more time working remotely from home were reported as being the happiest and most engaged in their work.
58
Remote workers more productive In a TEDx Stanford talk earlier this year, Nicholas Bloom, professor of economics at the university, spoke about the prevalence and highlighted the benefits of telecommuting. “It’s a trend that companies can’t ignore,” he said in his talk. “The workplace is a surprisingly distracting place in which to concentrate and work.” He cited a pilot program performed by Ctrip, a Chinese company that was expanding and looking for ways to scale its workforce without spending on office space. They randomly selected part of their workforce to work from home every day except for one day in the office per week. Managers oversaw the work of both remote and in-office employees. The company saw that their remote workers brought in more revenue. “The company found that working remotely saved time and money. Workers completed a full shift as opposed to being late because of traffic or taking an extended lunch break with a colleague,” Bloom said. “Remote workers tended to be more productive, which helps with retention, helps firms be more
profitable and reduces congestion [on the roads],” he said. With the average commute being 45 minutes, that’s an extra hour and 30 minutes employees save themselves, not to mention the environment, from being in traffic. These results coincide with the Gallup Poll’s which cited that employees working remotely reported being the happiest and were more engaged in their work. Living Local’s publisher, Steve Russo, also saw a shift toward remote working and the benefits of it. Russo manages several magazine brands, including Real Northwest Living, Northwest Sizzle, 360 Magazine, Like Media Digital in addition to Living Local with a staff of 15 operates from their personal homes spanning Washington and Northern Idaho. “I was researching and recognized there was a shift occurring away from ‘traditional’ workspaces. I also recognized that some of the best talents out there were homebound due to raising kids. We set out to create a flexible, creative workspace that fostered professional growth,” he said in an email.

collaborate He cited only one negative, which is the loss of in-office collaboration, but noted several benefits, a major one being the ability to obtain talent regardless of location. “We allow our employees to set their own schedules. If we have to ask for checkins, then that person isn’t a self-starter to begin with, and we only want people that push themselves,” Russo said. Motivation and the ability to work autonomously are important prerequisites. If a company is going to trust employees to work from home, those workers need to maintain and show their productivity. Careers ripe for telecommuting Every year, FlexJobs, one of the more well-known job boards, publishes a list of the top-100 companies that offer remote positions to their employees. The 2017 list includes notable companies as Amazon, IBM, Xerox and several government departments such as the Department of Agriculture (No. 18) and the U.S. Department of State (No. 52). FlexJobs also reported that many careers applicable for telecommuting were professional-grade jobs where most workers held a bachelor’s degree and worked half of their work week from home. They too reported an increase in remote workers: 56 percent in 2016, up from 50 percent in 2014. High-level careers that lend themselves to telecommuting include: computing and information technology fields, engineering and architecture, medicine and health, government and finance, customer service, virtual assistance, transcription services, graphic design, and training and sales. Don’t quit your day job yet! While workplaces are recognizing the benefits of working from home, telecommuting jobs aren’t out for grabs. It’s best to search for a job you’re qualified for and inquire about telecommuting possibilities as opposed to solely searching for a remote job. Many positions require communicating through a messaging board no matter how autonomous workers are left to accomplish their tasks. In spite of the growing acceptance of viable telecommuting positions, there are many temporary jobs that pay but may be less viable in terms of a having a sustainable, steady job. Scan Craigslist or other job boards and you’ll find work-from-home jobs calling for survey takers, English tutors, website testers, data entry, writers and editors, email or chat support positions, and search engine evaluators. (If you are curious, desperate or looking for a range of experience, some jobs range from game testing to searching for broken links on websites.)

These jobs typically don’t include benefits and offer only short working stints. Freelancing and the gig economy More people, however, are opting for short-term work in addition to full-time employment or retirement. These individuals work short-term jobs either out of need, income supplement or pure passion. Globalization and improved technology have validated the freelance worker. Over the years, there has been an uptick in the number of individuals freelancing (also known as on-demand work). In 2016, Intuit (makers of TurboTax) and Emergent Research conducted a study in which they noted 3.7 million people in the U.S. freelance. Their goal was to understand the behaviors of this population. In part, the recession of 2008 forced some people to find work however they could. On the other side of the telecommuting pendulum, the strengthening of the economy since then has given another segment of workers the financial confidence to let go of full-time work in favor of freelancing. Forbes reported on the study and noted, “For a large number of participants in this labor market, signing up with on-demand platforms is an offensive move aimed at gaining greater financial security and/or greater satisfaction and control in their professional lives.” Freelancing means freedom. Tasks change and individuals can pick and choose what jobs to take. Understandably, this is easier said than done. For anyone who has attempted freelancing full time, landing jobs can be time-consuming and full of tests, searching and vetting and also the challenge of fulfilling your client requests. A more practical way to find freelance work is to specialize in a certain area, instead of trying to fit every job requirement exactly. While flexible jobs are growing, stitching together enough jobs to make a living off it alone takes time and may be difficult for some. Study participants listed that as one of their top challenges. So, while financial instability is a part of freelancing, it is more reliable as a supplement to full-time work. Tips and tricks of the flexible trades Working from home has come into acceptance in recent years, but for a long time it wasn’t an option except for a select few. Tradition and also trust have arguably kept companies and people in the 9-to-5 grind. That said, keeping the trust of those who hire you is important in getting more work. Checking in regularly is important as well as keeping a consistent schedule. Freelance jobs, though temporary, may keep you accountable for the length a job takes to complete. Many remote jobs will ask for an estimate of time and rate per job. You’ll have to become adept at estimating how long a project will take to complete, keeping in mind a margin for error. “One tip is that you must be able to understand intimately the various projects, what they take and how long they take to complete. Let’s face it, as many as there are honest hard workers, there are those that exist to try and ‘get one over.’ Therefore, if you know that it takes X amount of hours to do such and such, and you have an employee that is taking double the time, you have an issue,” said Denise Supplee. Supplee has made a living as a realtor with Long & Foster, operations director at SparkRental and educator at Snaplandlord. Realtors have long been able to establish their own schedules, which she did while she launched Snaplandlord.

To protect yourself and to know what’s expected of you, ask for a contract or something in writing (an email could suffice) about the workload. Last, keep in mind that you are responsible for your taxes, as freelance jobs typically do not set that aside for you.
Though technology has blurred the lines between home and work in some way, it’s a trade many of us are willing to make in return for an easier commute and improved work-life balance.
Get good tools. Do your research and find tools to help you manage and keep track of your billable time. Tools like the HiveDesk have calendars, task lists and discussion boards to communicate with your virtual team. Google has a similar tool. Or, use a good old-fashion spreadsheet. Whatever you choose, be diligent so you can properly invoice and be compensated.
Where the virtual jobs are If you’re ready to become one of the 350,000 Americans that Forbes has cited doing on-demand work, again, do your research. There are many job boards where some postings might be too good to be true. Try vetting companies before applying. A good place to start looking for freelance work are job boards such as FlexJobs, Upwork, Guru, Indeed and Real Ways to Earn Money Online. Consider also emailing companies you’d like to work for and networking on LinkedIn through friends and coworkers. Similar to LinkedIn is WAHspace, which is specifically geared to remote workers. Remote work benefits employers and workers As commutes lengthen and people live farther away from major cities, working remotely is a win for both companies and workers—whether full-time or on a freelance basis. It saves time commuting, which in turn reduces carbon emissions and also saves on the overhead costs of housing employees on a job site. And, finally, it gives workers a chance to be closer to family—even if it means working outside of the 9-to-5 schedule.

Cheering from the stands as your son makes his first touchdown. A first date enjoying a Festival at Sandpoint concert. Proudly observing as your child waves from the grandstands on graduation day. There are many memories that have been made at Memorial Field over the past 70 years. The field’s grandstands, which were first built in 1946 when Harry Truman was president, the federal minimum wage was a mere 40 cents per hour and firstclass postage was 3 cents, were torn down last October. The recently completed new grandstands mark the beginning of a new era that will allow future generations to enjoy the beautiful venue on the shores of the Pend Oreille River for decades to come.

It became his signature line. “I always wondered before each game how many times I would have the opportunity to say it,” Ron said. He recalls one time when the Bulldogs were beating Coeur d’Alene and at one point when he made his post-touchdown announcement, the Coeur d’Alene coach sitting in the booth next to Ron tried to reach over and grab the microphone. As time would allow, Ron and his colleague in the announcer’s booth, Dwight Sheffler, attended many of the away games. However, they were not able
Ranel also shared a story that demonstrates not only how long Ron’s tenure was, but also the dedication of fans in our community. “There was a family, the Becker family, who came to every single home game for years and always sat in the same place,” said Ranel. “Over the years, Ron would look down from the booth and they would always be there. Over time, their hair changed from dark, to gray and eventually to white.” Ron took his role as announcer seriously and would show up at the stadium before each home opener to test the sound

to attend the game where the Bulldogs won the State Championship in 1997, but that did not deter the two from celebrating. “We listened to the game on the radio, and when they won, we went to the stadium and rang the victory bell,” said Ron. Announcing games for the hometown crowd for nearly four decades was something that Ron looked forward to each week. His only payment was a delivery of a hamburger from the concession booth, but he likely would not have wanted to be paid for his role. “Ron did it for the community,” said his wife Ranel. “He loves the sport and he loved the kids. Ron’s passion was contagious in his 37 years as a Bulldog announcer. He would get the crowd excited and do his best to still build up the excitement even when the Bulldogs were down. And according to Ranel, he loved every game, but Homecoming was one of the more special times. “He loved those kids,” she said. Thank you Ron, for the many years of cheering on our Bulldogs! It was a gift to the fans and the players to have you in the announcer’s booth for so many years.

BACK-TOSCHOOL ACTION LIST Tips to stay organized throughout the year By Patty Hutchens
It’s back- to-school time, and for many kids that also means it is time for the hectic schedules of homework, sports and spending time with friends. Kids’ lives are busy, sometimes leaving them (and parents) feeling overwhelmed. Here are some tips on how to stay organized. Starting off on the right track this school year is sure to lead to a more successful year all around.
Keep a Planner
Get organized Many schools provide students with a planner. If your school does not, head out to the store and make sure you have one before the year begins. Parents, encourage your kids to keep it with them at all times. Leaving it in their locker will do little to help them when they cannot remember an assignment. With sports, there will be days that are busier than others with out-of-town games, late practices and more. This is when it is extremely important to organize and budget your time. Plan to do homework ahead of schedule as time allows. Organization is the key to all success—in school, in sports and in life.

CHECK LIST Schedule Time For Relaxation
Clear your mind While it is important to schedule homework, practice a sport or spend time with friends, also make sure to schedule time for sleep and relaxation. It is recommended that teenagers get at least nine hours of sleep, but many are lucky to get seven. Getting enough sleep will help teens focus better and make them better equipped to handle the stress of everyday life. Lack of sleep can lead to not only poor academic performance, but also poor performance in athletics as well. It is also important for teens to try to maintain some consistency with their sleep patterns, something that is not easy to achieve when they want to stay up late on the weekends.
Organize Your Physical Space
Get back in the game Whether it is your gym locker or your bedroom, organizing one’s physical space can lead to easier transitions during a busy day. Have a specific place you keep your schoolbooks and homework. Keep your gym locker organized with everything you need for your given sport. (It saves mom from having to make a trip to deliver your equipment you forgot at home!) Before going to bed each night, make sure all that you need for your next day is ready to go. If you sleep through your alarm, you will be grateful for the extra few minutes you took the night before!
TAKE A TEAM APPROACH
Work together Teamwork can be as important off the field as on the field. Surround yourself with likeminded people who share the same goals as you do. Do you share classes with some of your teammates? Plan study groups with them, as they likely share your same schedule. Do you like to workout? Schedule time for that with your friends as well. Setting your priorities and surrounding yourself with people who support that is important. In the end, you will find you are happier, less stressed and enjoying the life of school and sports.

Idaho
I’M TRAVELING, USUALLY on an airplane, when someone asks:
State Park, and is a center for Idaho-style recreation. I remember hearing McCall gets more snow than any other place in Idaho! And, there is no shortage of activities near McCall during the winter. Burgdorf Mountain hosts all sorts of activities, from skiing to snowshoeing, snowcat adventures to snow tubing. Burgdorf Hot Springs are accessible only by snowmobile in the winter, but you can drive in during the temperate seasons. After Memorial Day, McCall is an epic summer kind of town.
“Where are you from?” “Idaho.” I reply. “You live in Idaho? I didn’t know people actually live there! Isn’t that, like, just a big field of potatoes?” What can I say? Maybe this perception is good for us. We live in a beautiful place and enjoy our solitude. On the other hand, we are blessed to be surrounded by beautiful landscapes and hearty people. It’s not all potatoes. Next time you’re in my shoes, here are a few places worth telling people about:
The Selkirk Loop is a 280-mile stretch of road winding through Washington, Idaho and British Columbia. If you could choose one thing in this article to do, make it the Selkirk Loop. Along the way, you can enjoy just about everything you can imagine encountering in this part of the world. There are rivers, lakes and mountains—plenty of scenic views. As with McCall, the drive alone is worth the trip. But, with a little bit of planning, you can find great places to stay, eat, shop and find adventure. In any season, you are sure to find the outdoor experience you are looking for along the way.
McCall is surrounded by the Payette National Forest and wraps around the bottom of Payette Lake. Like many places in Idaho, the drive alone is worth the trip. Out of Boise, you head up 55, the Payette River Scenic Byway. The town is home to resorts, museums, restaurants and Ponderosa

LAKE PEND OREILLE - PHOTO BY COLIN ANDERSON
Horseshoe Bend is a rural town about 30 minutes outside of Boise. Swimming, fishing, whitewater rafting, train rides and mountain biking are among the activities to be enjoyed there. The main attraction, in my humble opinion, is Zip Idaho—epic zipline and heli zipping! Yes, I said heli zipping, as in the combination of a zipline and a helicopter. The city of Cascade, Idaho, celebrates their centennial this year. Surely their staying power is a testament to the gorgeous setting. The town sits on the southeast end of Lake Cascade, or the Cascade Reservoir. The lake is a great place for camping, hiking, biking, swimming, boating and fishing. Cascade is also close to Brundage Mountain, offering more hiking and biking trails or skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing in the winter, and Gold Fork Hot Springs in Donnelly, Idaho.
Hells Canyon is a national recreation area in Riggins, Idaho. This canyon runs between Idaho and Oregon and is the deepest river gorge in North America! The area offers opportunities for scenic viewing, fishing, whitewater rafting and hiking. For those interested in taking in the sites of the region, the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway weaves along the Snake River to the Hells Canyon Dam. For scenic views, check out the Buckhorn, Hat point and Hells Canyon overlooks. For those seeking a view from the river, there are guided tours and other opportunities to get out on the water.
CRATERS OF THE MOON
Shoshone Falls is associated with the town of Twin Falls. The falls are in the Shoshone Falls Park on the Snake River. Twin Falls and the
Snake River have a lot to offer and should not be overlooked as destinations in themselves. The real prize here, however, is Shoshone Falls. Believe it or not, Shoshone Falls are taller than Niagara falls by 45 feet (212’ to 167’), and, if my math is correct, Shoshone Falls is within the top 20 tallest falls in the United States. What they lack in height compared to some others they make up for in breadth!
SandpointLivingLocal.com
Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is aptly named. The area encompasses more than 1,000 square miles and incorporates three separate lava fields. You will be hardpressed to find a better preserved area like it, showcasing the aftermath of volcanic activity. The result is a harsh but breathtaking landscape that is, as the name suggests, otherworldly. It is said that NASA used this area to prepare astronauts for the earliest moon landing. They later determined that the surface of our moon is very different. Whatever the case, Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is readily accessible and has plenty of atmosphere. Hiking and cave exploration are excellent activities in the temperate months. In the winter, try cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. It seems a list of places to visit in Idaho would not be complete without the Sawtooth Mountains. There is a pair of infamous towns close by, Sun Valley and Ketchum. You may know them as favored spots for the rich and

Perhaps in contrast to the well-known Sawtooth Mountains, the lesser known Mullan Trail deserves a mention. Anyone who remembers the old Oregon Trail computer game knows what a hard business it is to make it this far West in a wagon. Diphtheria
and botched river crossings are just a few of the problems early settlers faced. The Mullan Road was constructed by the U.S. Army under the command of Lieutenant John Mullan. It enabled passage for the first wagon trains into the Pacific Northwest. Today, the route is traced by Interstate 90, but not exactly. That is to say, there is no way of knowing the exact route of the original Mullan Road. Part of the adventure here is to check out what lies just off the route and to attempt to piece together the puzzle yourself.
offer us, how much more do we love it? That is the challenge. There is some part of this breathtaking, 148-square-mile lake you haven’t tried. Search out a new beach or landing, find a different swimming hole, go out on a kayak, try a stand-up paddle board, ski, wakeboard, pontoon—whatever you are used to doing, shake it up a bit. There you have it! Now, pick a place and get out there!
Lastly, Lake Pend Oreille! Some of you are thinking, “Huh?” You’re right. Many readers live around this lake and already love it. But, how often do we become acquainted with only one aspect of something we love? And when we learn that something we love has a different dimension and something new to

famous, or, speaking of Ketchum in particular, as the last place Ernest Hemingway drew breath before taking his own life. The area is charged and the reason for attraction varies. One thing is for sure, the Sawtooth Mountains are a must see! Whether you want to immerse yourself in the local culture, arts and activities, lose yourself in the backcountry or slip quietly through the region along the Sawtooth Scenic Byway, the Sawtooth Mountains will not disappoint. There is so much to do in and around the mountains; I can safely recommend them as a destination for anyone with a pulse.

Food & Drink Recipe HEIRLOOM TOMATO SAUCE Makes approx. 4 cups sauce Ingredients • 5 Ibs. heirloom tomatoes (approximately 15) • 3/4 cup water • 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil • 3 large garlic cloves • 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper • 2 large basil sprigs • 1/2 tbsp. sugar • Sea salt and fresh ground pepper
Preperation • In a large stock pot, combine the tomatoes with the water. Cover and cook over moderate heat until the tomatoes are soft and a bit soupy (about 7 to 10 minutes). • Strain the tomatoes and remove seeds. If you happen to have a food mill, it will work well in this situation. Puree the tomatoes and put them into a large mixing bowl. (You should have about 10 cups.) • Wipe out the stock pot and heat the olive oil on a low heat. Add the garlic and crushed red pepper and cook over very low heat until soft (about 1 minute).
HEIRLOOM TOMATOES are a variety of tomato that has been passed down from gardener to gardener. Unlike modern hybrid varieties, heirloom tomatoes come true from seed. They tend to have a later season harvest than other tomato varieties. The main reason to choose heirloom tomato varieties is the flavor. There’s no one taste; you’ll find a wide range of flavors in the heirloom-tomato world. But many of these varieties are prized for having an old-time taste— they’re very different than many modern tomato hybrids like ‘Better Boy’ or ‘Early Girl.’
• Add the tomato puree, basil and sugar and season to taste with salt and pepper. Simmer over low heat until the sauce is thickened and reduced to about 6 cups (about 2 hours). • Discard the basil and serve the sauce over your favorite pasta or use as dip for garlic bread!

7B WOMEN HOLD SECOND ANNUAL BOOBS ‘N BEER FUN RUN AND OKTOBERFEST Event benefits Celebrate Life and Community Cancer Services By Patty Hutchens
FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW, 7B Women, Inc. will hold its Boobs ‘N Beer Fun Run and Oktoberfest Celebration to benefit Community Cancer Services and Celebrate Life, and it’s an event you won’t want to miss! Co-sponsored by MickDuff ’s Brewing Company, this year’s event promises to be fun for the whole family. A 5k fun run along Sand Creek Trail is followed by an Oktoberfest celebration at MickDuff ’s Beer Hall complete with musical entertainment by Harold’s IGA and food trucks from Old Tin Can and another to be announced soon. The 2016 inaugural event raised more than $10,000 with the proceeds divided equally between Community Cancer Services and Celebrate Life, both of which are local organizations that assist people in our community who have been diagnosed with cancer. “There are so many people in North Idaho who have benefited from the services of these two organizations, but unfortunately the need continues to grow,” said 7B board member and co-chair of the event, Alice Sloane. “It is important to 7B Women to do our part to make sure that the funds are available so Celebrate Life and Community Cancer Services can continue to assist cancer patients by enriching their lives and helping them thrive through a very difficult time.” Local women founded both organizations at a time when they were battling cancer. Heather Gibson founded Community Cancer Services in 2002, and she passed away in August of 2006. Celebrate Life was founded by Jenny Meyer in 2004. Jenny lost her battle with cancer in June of 2008. The mission and vision of both women have continued to move forward through the years thanks to those in the generous community these women called home. This year’s Boobs ‘N Beer Fun Run and Oktoberfest will take place on Sunday, October 1. There are various sponsorship levels available, and people of all ages are welcome to participate in the run/walk. Registration includes a T-shirt, which is guaranteed for those who register by September 8, and a token for a free beer—or root beer—at MickDuff ’s Beer Hall. For details, to register for the event or to become a sponsor, please visit 7BWomen.com and click on the link to events. Costumes are welcome and encouraged for this fun event!
