HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? BEFORE WE KNEW IT, summer was gone! It is back to reality. But as we look back on all the great memories of these past few months, don’t forget to look ahead to the upcoming months as well. Just because summer is over does not mean the fun has to stop. In this issue, we highlight our local football team and what is in store for the next few months. What can be better than the Friday night lights and cheering on your hometown team? Supporting our youth, whether you have children in school or not, can take on many forms. Businesses provide financial support. Individuals volunteer time to coach. And, of course, there are the fans who attend the games, whether it is football, soccer, volleyball and more, to cheer on the athletes. If you have younger kids, it is always fun for them to go to games and see what sport may interest them as they grow older. Fall is also a time to get out and enjoy the cooler weather and the beautiful colors. There are hiking trails, bike trails and more

that are fun for everyone to explore. Take time to go explore the many fall festivals throughout the region. If you are looking for a fall getaway, be sure to read this month’s Travel & Leisure story, where you will find information on a great escape into British Columbia as the temperatures begin to cool down. Yes, while it may be back to school and back to reality, it doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Get out to enjoy the beautiful Northwest and all this area of paradise has to offer!

Simplifying for Happiness and Health THE SURPRISING HEALTH BENEFITS OF DECLUTTERING

(BPT) - GETTING YOUR HOUSE IN ORDER CAN BE A STRUGGLE, especially as we age. Sorting through decades of belongings is often emotional and stressful, as questions and decisions pile up: Is this jewelry valuable? What should I do with all these tools I no longer use? Will this china set have sentimental value to my children? But while it can be exhausting, this effort to declutter and simplify can be worthwhile, not only for our homes but also for our health. The advantages of decluttering Getting rid of things you no longer need or want may have a positive effect on mental health and can also make for a safer environment. It’s a sobering fact that every 12 seconds, according to the CDC, someone over age 64 will fall and end up in the emergency room. Decluttering can help keep paths clear and obstacles to a minimum.

A study at Indiana University showed that people with clean houses are healthier than people with messy houses. Regular household chores like vacuuming and washing windows can be great physical activity. A tidy home can also mean we’re more likely to invite people over—prompting interactions that can help alleviate feelings of depression and isolation that can accompany aging. Tips to get started With these tips, decluttering doesn’t need to be a dreaded task: • Don’t judge yourself. It’s harder to decide what to do with items that have been in the family for generations than it might be for millennials to decide what to do with items from their college years. • Take it one room at a time. According to a study by Moen,

A kitchen oasis... the most cluttered areas of a home are the garage, kitchen and home office. The kitchen is a good place to start the decluttering process because throwing away chipped dishes and expired spices isn’t as taxing as wading through boxes of potentially important paperwork or personal items. Take everything out of the fridge and cupboards and spread it all out on a counter or table so it’s easy to review. Give shelves a good wipe-down and restock them with the necessities, putting go-to things within easy reach, and donating or storing appliances and dishes that are used less often. Once you feel good about your progress in the kitchen, move on to tackle the garage, office and other spaces where belongings tend to pile up. Like closets! • Keep only what you wear the most. Pick a handful of favorite outfits for everyday wear, social outings and special occasions, seasonal wear and wardrobe staples, and donate the rest. If it’s

SandpointLivingLocal.com

hard to part with handmade or other sentimental items, consider finding creative ways to remember them, such as making a memory quilt of old T-shirts or photographing special items for an album and then letting them go. • Stop the build-up before it begins. Keep a recycling bin handy for unwanted credit card offers and coupon packs before they enter the house, and unsubscribe from magazines and newspapers if they pile up unread. Eco-Cycle has some tips to cull the tide of junk mail, and mobile apps like Evernote can help collect and digitize recipes, warranties, instruction manuals and memorabilia to clear away more piles of paper. At the end of the day, it’s OK to hang on to belongings that are near and dear to you. But for items that don’t hold sentimental or functional value, kick start a decluttering mission today so you can enjoy a tidier, safer home tomorrow.

SUPPORTING OUR TEACHERS AS THE SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS, REACH OUT TO OUR EDUCATORS BY PATTY HUTCHENS

Teachers are super heros! There are also less direct ways we can help support our children’s teachers. One such way is through open communication between you and your child’s teacher. If there is something in your child’s life that may affect his or her learning, keep your child’s teacher informed and help provide an insight to any unusual behaviors your child may be exhibiting.

I

t’s back-to-school time, and as we prepare to send our children back into the classroom, we also need to keep in mind what we can do to support our children’s teachers. After all, in many cases, they spend more time during the school day than we do with our children. If you are a stay-at-home parent, there are many ways you can volunteer your time in the classroom. Participating in things such as chaperoning field trips, working with small groups of students or one-on-one with students who are challenged in certain areas, or sharing a special skill with the students, all of these things can go a long way to assist a teacher. But if you have younger children at home or are a working parent, you may think you are not able to volunteer. Nothing could be further from the truth. You can volunteer to do things outside of the classroom and school hours. Volunteer to sort book orders, prepare supplies for special projects or art activities and more. Because many teachers spend time during their evenings or weekends to prepare for upcoming activities, this type of behind-the-scenes help is especially appreciated.

When it does come time to communicate, keep in mind that during their work hours, teachers are spending their time with students and have little or no time to take phone calls or have oneon-one meetings. The use of technology makes it much easier to communicate via email allowing the teacher to respond when it is convenient for him or her. It’s important for parents to realize that while the teachers’ responsibilities include creating a positive and productive learning environment, parents also play a critical role in ensuring a child is ready to learn. One way in which parents can assist teachers is by helping their child adapt. Keep an eye on your child’s behavior when they return from school each day. Are they happy? Are they frustrated? Help your child express their feelings and work on solutions for things that may be challenging for them at school. And remember, communicate with the teacher to have them help in the problem-solving process. Whether you are a volunteer in the classroom, doing behind-the-scenes work or supporting your child’s teacher through open communication, all of this helps not only our children to have a successful school experience but our teachers as well. Thank you to all those teachers out there who play such an important role in our children’s lives.

Remember...

It’s important for parents to realize that while the teachers’ responsibilities include creating a positive and productive learning environment, parents also play a critical role in ensuring a child is ready to learn.

Stress?

BRINGING YOUR PET TO WORK CAN HELP

(BPT) - IF YOU'VE EVER FELT TENSE, ANXIOUS OR SIMPLY UNABLE TO RELAX WHILE PERFORMING YOUR JOB, YOU'RE FAR FROM ALONE.

As more and more companies adopt a pets-at-work policy, consider these facts based on a recent Purina report about the many advantages of such programs:

A recent survey by the American Institute of Stress found 80 percent of U.S. workers across industries have felt stress in the workplace; nearly half say they could use help dealing with it and 42 percent said their coworkers could use some relief.

• They can benefit health: Pet-employee interaction has been shown to reduce the employee’s blood pressure and cholesterol levels in addition to alleviating anxiety.

To the delight of animal lovers everywhere, awareness of the physical, mental and emotional toll taken by stress is leading progressive employers to create take-your-pet-to-work programs. For example, for the past 20 years, Purina has encouraged its associates to bring their pets to work, and in a typical week hundreds of dogs and cats enjoy spending time with their owners at the pet food maker's St. Louis campus. "Pets bring a wealth of benefits—both physical and emotional—to pet owners and their families, so it's no surprise those same benefits also apply to the workplace and employees," notes Dr. Kurt Venator, Purina's chief veterinary officer. "Whether a pet helps provide a calming sense during a challenging situation or encourages employees to take a walk during their lunch break, here at Purina we experience the benefits of pets at work every day and want others to as well."

• They can improve employee retention: Sixty-three percent of employees in pet-friendly workplaces say they're very satisfied with their work environments—nearly twice as many as those in other workplaces. In fact, respondents rank the option of bringing pets to work as the second most-valuable employee perk—more valuable than free coffee and parking. Overall, three in five survey participants wish their workplace would institute a pet-friendly policy. • They can alleviate loneliness: Eight in 10 employees who can bring pets to work say that activity makes them feel more happy, relaxed and sociable. That's partly because talking about pets can be an ice breaker, making it easier for people to approach co-workers and get to know them better. • They can promote physical activity: Many employees spend breaks

and lunchtime playing with their pets or taking them for walks, boosting their own aerobic activity at the same time.

Cold Noses... ...Warm Hearts 208.265.5700

• They can increase pets' happiness: Rather than staying home waiting for their owners to arrive, pets get to socialize with new people, play with other pets and enjoy more activity. Nearly nine of 10 people in the survey agree that bringing their pets to work strengthens owner-pet bonding. In light of the proven benefits, Purina encourages other employers to consider allowing pets in the workplace. A toolkit with tips and information is provided at Purina. com. "Our goal with our report is to continue to raise awareness of the benefits of taking pets to work and to arm employees and employers with insights that can help facilitate pet-friendly environments within their companies," notes Dr. Venator.

UNCOVERING LOCAL TALENT BRAD FRERKSON, PHOTOGRAPHER/OWNER 7B-REAL ESTATE PHOTOGRAPHY & 7B PHOTOGRAPHY

THE VALUE OF RELATIONSHIP

BY RONALD DENOVA @RONALDDENOVA PHOTO COURTESY OF BRAD FRERKSON “This place (Sandpoint) is magical!”

T

ell me, have you ever said, “That picture is terrible!”? Well, I have! But no more, Sandpoint! Meet local talent/photographer Brad Frerkson of 7B-Real Estate Photography! I have seen first hand some of the highest quality photos you can find! You, too, can see his magic as he showcases his best attributes on his websites, 7B-RealEstatePhotography.com and 7B-Photography.com. Brad’s lifelong love of art and photography led him to study computer animation at Chico State, where he obtained his degree. Unfortunately, his love was merely held as a hobby as he worked in web analytics for Microsoft, as that industry was a bit more lucrative. He had many friends who were realtors and would ask him to do shoots for their listings, moonlighting on nights and weekends; his first step toward specializing in the real estate world. The quality of his work traveled fast, and his hobby was becoming his dream! His working contract with Microsoft expired in 2013, and in 2014 he took a leap of faith deciding his passion would be his career. He humbly outlines the tremendous support he received from friends, and especially from family. “Is that it?” you ask. No, there’s more! This career photographer now holds a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Small Unmanned

Pilots License, as the business has leaped into drone technology! The real estate business is demanding traditional still shots along with newer drone footage. I found it fascinating that it can take Brad several hours to shoot a single home followed up by many hours of editing. It’s no wonder the end product is of the highest quality. It’s clear his passion for photography is matched with his love for Sandpoint. His work is not limited to real estate. His other company, 7B-Photography, focuses on capturing the beauty of Sandpoint and surrounding areas. You can find his photos in many local publications and 7B-Photography generously gives donations (canvases, prints, etc...) and 10 percent of profits to local nonprofit/charities as well. He also helps small local businesses in creating and maintaining websites at a very low cost. Although Brad has been coming to Sandpoint most of his life, he and his fiancé have settled into the area over the past five years. They enjoy the outdoors, especially all the watersports Sandpoint has to offer. Dedicated, detail oriented, passionate, state-of-the-art technology, committed to the community … That’s 7B-Real Estate Photography & 7B-Photography.

GOOD NEWS

A New Impression

Paint Bucket storefront catching eyes BY COLIN ANDERSON PHOTOS BY PATTY HUTCHENS

“If you are willing to be creative, you can make your everyday surroundings a great place,” said Liz. “My hope is that more businesses follow suit and realize how important it is.”

H

aving opened its doors in 1987, The Paint Bucket is a long-established local business. People visit for premium paints and local advice on color blending in new builds, remodels and more. Even if you’ve not stepped foot through the front door, you’ve probably noticed the unique décor on the building. Since the beginning, the outside has donned murals: first of fish, then of frogs and now a new display is turning heads once again. “It’s such a welcoming first impression. Children come by and point, people stand across the street and take pictures all the time,” said Paint Bucket owner Liz Stephenson. Liz and husband Harold are all about inspiring people to bring creativity into their lives. While the main floor of their shop is focused on business, patrons can walk up the stairs and into a gallery of works done by the family that include photos, paintings and more. The mural and the interior displays are meant to encourage people to really think creatively with their designs and demonstrate that the Paint Bucket is always on board with unique and fun ideas.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

“We just want people to know that being creative is a big deal,” said Liz. “We accept any idea that comes through the door, and anytime they have an inspiration, we are on board with them.” After 10 years, the Stephensons decided it was time once again to update the mural, and there was only one person they thought of for the job. Maria Larson painted the previous murals, and the Stephensons have called her a friend for more than 20 years. Having moved to the area in the late ‘90s, Maria is a well-known artist in town, owning galleries in Priest Lake, the Angel Gallery in Coeur d’Alene and Gallery Northwest. She is also the person responsible for brightening up the windows of downtown businesses each year with images of the Christmas spirit. “My first mural was at All-Seasons Garden and Nursery in Kootenai,” recalled Maria. While she was working at the business, she convinced the owners to let her paint the mural. It wasn’t long before her work was noticed and demand for her services started to come in. “I was working at the time and a customer came in asked me who painted the mural? I told them it was me, and it really grew from there,” she said.

For years Maria has painted pieces including handmade maps of Lake Pend Oreille that grace many local businesses, homes and cabins. She hadn’t painted a full-sized mural since the last one she did at The Paint Bucket 10 years ago, but when the Liz and Harold made the call, it didn’t take her long to accept.

It’s the Stephensons’ hope that their new display is a catalyst for other businesses in the area to exercise their creative side. “If you are willing to be creative, you can make your everyday surroundings a great place,” said Liz. “My hope is that more businesses follow suit and realize how important it is.”

It was decided that the mural this time around would feature native birds. Maria collaborated with the couple almost daily on the design as ideas and new inspirations continually changed the piece. It wasn’t long before the community also took notice of the new mural coming to life.

For Maria, the satisfaction of seeing another of her works on display for the community to enjoy brings great pride. The “good jobs” from so many people while she worked brings her great joy, especially from those she didn’t see coming.

“It’s amazing, I think everybody enjoys it,” said Maria. “People were driving by honking their horns, and even teenagers and young kids would stop me to say, ‘That looks great!’”

“One day a guy drove by in a huge truck, huge tires, very masculine. He stopped in the middle of the street and said to me, ‘Wow. That is so beautiful.’”

Like almost all “construction” projects, the unveiling was a little behind schedule but not by much. Maria thought she could finish the piece in two weeks, but a spring filled with hot temperatures, strong winds and a few pouring rains pushed the completed project to five weeks and a late June debut.

For any artist, having your work impact someone is the primary goal. For Maria, she especially enjoys when people get the concept she is working on but is very much OK if people don’t like it as well, as long as she has stirred their emotions, she has made her impact. “Even if they don’t like it, at least I’ve evoked an emotion. I’d rather they hate it than not notice it at all,” she said.

As you walk or drive by now you’ll see an incredible sight, and the closer you look, the more you will find. Finches and snowy owls are found along other native species and plants set in front of sunset colors to blend with the existing exterior of The Paint Bucket. “It says a lot about Harold and Liz to invest in something like this and do something for the community to enjoy,” said Maria.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

As summer ends, winter will be around soon enough, and as you walk the streets of downtown you might see Maria working her magic on the storefront windows. Take a moment to let the artwork inspire you and be thankful there are people who continue to make Sandpoint a beautiful and inspirational place to call home.

B

eau Kilchenstein, a student at Kootenai Elementary in Sandpoint, always looks forward to when the new books from his Scholastic book order arrive at school. “He loves the fact he gets to pick out his own book,” said his mom, Angie Kilchenstein. “It has really helped to encourage him to read more, and it’s always fun to see all the kids get excited when they receive their books.” Angie recalls when she was young only certain kids would participate in the monthly book orders, and it was typically due to whether or not a family could afford to purchase them. That is not the case anymore. Thanks to a local organization, The Village Green Project, all children from kindergarten through third grade in the Lake Pend Oreille School District (LPOSD) are gifted one book

each month regardless of the family’s ability to pay. Karen Quill founded The Village Green Project, a nonprofit. Her goal in doing so was to bring the nationally acclaimed Book Trust Program to LPOSD. “I was on the Book Trust advisory board in Maui for six years and felt strongly that the program would benefit the children here in Sandpoint,” said Karen. Book Trust began locally in the fall of 2014. At that time the program benefited all of the first grade students in LPOSD—approximately 256 students in all, according to Karen. “We grew by adding a grade each year. With a special grant, we were able to add kindergarten in February of 2017, finally reaching our goal of every kindergartener, first, second and third

grader in all seven LPOSD elementary schools— Southside, Sagle, Washington, Farmin-Stidwell, Kootenai, Northside and Hope,” said Karen. The total number of students reached by Book Trust is now approximately 1,100—four times more than when it started just four years ago. One aspect of the Book Trust program that is so important is that it is available to all kids, regardless of income level, which makes having to identify the ones in need a non-issue. “When [the national organization] Book Trust started, it was only for children on the free and reduced lunch program,” explained Karen. “However, when The Village Green Project brought it to LPOSD, from the first day it was for all children. This way it is part of their classroom culture every day for every child.”

SANDPOINT IN FOCUS CELEBRATING LITERACY BOOK TRUST PROMOTES A LOVE OF READING

BY PATTY HUTCHENS

COURTESY OF THE VILLAGE GREEN PROJECT

Michelle McNelley is a kindergarten teacher at Washington Elementary and shares that she loves that Book Trust provides books to every child in the class. “We celebrate books and reading together as a classroom community,” said Michelle. “We talk about taking care of our books and creating our own library at home.” She recalls how the Scholastic book orders made an impact on her as a child. “I can remember the excitement as a child bringing home a Scholastic book order. My mom and I would sit down together, and I would carefully select a book. I would quickly return the order to school and anxiously await the arrival of my new book,” said Michelle. “When it finally arrived, and I had it in hand, I would just spend time taking in that lovely new book smell. Then I would quickly dash home for my mom or dad

to read it to me. As a teacher, I want each of my students to experience this fond childhood memory. However, for many children, this wasn't possible.” She said, in in the past, a few parents would order at least one book for their child, but not every parent was able to. “As a result, I would quietly place some new book(s) in a few children's backpacks. When you are 5 years old, it is difficult to understand why some children are receiving new books and some are not, and some never had the opportunity to celebrate the joys of a new book. Book Trust has changed all of that!”

total $7 or less. After each child has selected his/ her books, time is spent sharing with classmates the books selected. “When the box is delivered, and the first child sees the box, cheers that our Book Trust books have arrived fill the classroom,” said Michelle. “I open the box with the class and call each child up to receive their new books. Children spend the next 30 minutes carefully looking at each of their books, showing their books to classmates and then carefully placing their new books in their backpacks to take home. Book Trust promotes the importance of snuggling up and reading to your child every day!”

Now, once a month, all her kindergarten students sit on the carpet as she hands them each a Scholastic book order. She reads the description of each book to them, and the children then get to self-select books of interest to them, which

The annual cost of the local Book Trust program is approximately $90,000. Last year, the students chose and now own for their own in-home libraries—more than 23,000 books. And it not only benefits the students but the staff as well.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

39

“Our teachers earned more than 600,000 scholastic bonus points, which allowed them to buy books, teaching tools and supplies,” said Karen. The funds to support Book Trust are raised locally, with the exception of a grant to bring kindergarten into the program. Many local organizations have provided financial support including Sandpoint Rotary, Community Assistance League, Inland Community Foundation and a grant this year from 101 Women. “The backbone of our funding is from individuals from our community who believe that literacy is the foundation of all learning and that it will enhance the lives of our students in their future academic and working lives,” said Karen. “Book Trust is changing the culture in our schools to one of a love of reading and changing the lives of our students.” The national Book Trust program reports that while it may be surprising that so many children in one of the wealthiest countries in the world do not have access to even a $2 book, the fact is that in low-income areas, there is only one book for every 300 children. Through Book Trust, children are empowered to choose their own books that they are able to keep as their own. By allowing kids to choose their own book, there is an increased likelihood that the child will actually read the book, which in turn builds healthy habits of reading and learning.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

The concept for Book Trust began over 20 years ago when a teacher in Colorado wondered why some of her students were not buying books from the Scholastic Reading Club each month. Then reality hit. It was due to affordability. In 2001, she took it upon herself to pilot the Book Trust program, beginning with 170 students. Currently, Book Trust delivers 1 million books to approximately 57,000 kids in 21 states. And thanks to Karen and others in our community, the youth in Sandpoint are able to benefit from this incredible program. Michelle recalls a moment last year, when she was touched when a student who had just received her Book Trust books said, "This is the book I have always wished for!” “Without Book Trust, this child may have never had the opportunity to experience receiving a brand-new book that she selected herself,” said Michelle. “As we say in kindergarten, every time our Scholastic book order arrives, ‘Hurray for Book Trust!’” If you would like to donate to The Village Green Project, you may do so by logging onto VillageGreenProject.org and click on the “donate” button.

senior at Sandpoint High School, Niah Brass is co-captain of this year’s girls’ cross-country team along with Chloe Braedt. A fouryear athlete in both cross country and track, Niah is the top returner and played a part in the last three years’ state cross-country teams, placing second and third on the girls’ side and achieving three regional team titles for cross country. “As a track distance runner, Niah was the regional champion last year in 3200 and was a state competitor as a junior in 3200 and freshman year in the 4x400m relay,” said coach Angie Brass. After graduating next spring, Niah said she would like to stay in the Pacific Northwest and study environmental science. “I love the outdoors and believe that there is much to be done to protect our environment and wildlife,” she said.

COACH'S WORDS ...

She shares that what she loves most about cross country is the team. “I've met many of my closest friends from being a part of the cross-country team,” said Niah, adding that cross country has taught her how amazing it is to be part of something bigger than herself. “It’s taught me how to dedicate hard work to a cause in order to help you and your teammates be the best they can be and to build deep, meaningful relationships with people who are working together to accomplish a common goal.” She is grateful to her coaches for more than just helping her to become a better athlete. “My coaches, Matt and Angie, challenge me to be better every day, not just as a runner and teammate but also as a student, friend, daughter, sibling and just overall a better human being in every aspect of my life,” said Niah.

“Both Niah and Kieran are dedicated hard workers, rocking their training in and out of season, always putting the team first and have been a part of a strong pack of runners that have helped to build the program to what it is today,” said Coach Angie Brass.

S

enior Kieran Wilder has participated in both cross country and track since his freshman year and considers his biggest accomplishment so far to be when he had the opportunity to run cross country at state last year. “The team was truly special, and I felt a bond to every guy on our team,” said Kieran. “For my final year of running, I hope to continue to build these bonds with every member of our team.”

And of his coaches Matt and Angie Brass, Kieran said they have changed his life profoundly. “I have learned discipline and how to balance all the aspects of my life, academically and athletically. I have learned to use my voice and move into a leadership role, overcoming my personal insecurities to contribute for the good of the team. This wonderful team has made all the difference in my life and has taught me lessons I will use for the rest of my life and built relationships I will cherish forever.”

Kieran will serve as the boys’ cross-country captain this year, something Coach Angie Brass said is well-deserving, citing Kieran’s consistent dedication, training and rapid movements. Kieran plans to attend the University of Idaho for two years and then transfer to the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he will study environmental engineering. He shares that being part of a team is the most valuable part of cross country. “Having a connection to the rest of your teammates allows you to push yourself past what you would be able to do alone,” he said. “Having so many friends on the team, and constantly gaining new ones, makes you feel that you always have someone there for you,” he said.

PAYING TRIBUTE TO SANDPOINT’S ATHLETES RECALLING GREAT MOMENTS AND THE ATHLETES WHO MADE THEM HAPPEN

BY PATTY HUTCHENS

W

ho says dreams can’t come true for small-town athletes from North Idaho? Just look at the accomplishments of Jerry Kramer who, after decades of waiting, finally received his induction into the NFL Hall of Fame just last month. The 56th class was announced earlier this year in Minneapolis during Super Bowl weekend. In order to be inducted into the class of 2018, Kramer had to receive 80 percent of voting support from the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s selection committee. It was a long time coming, and perhaps no one deserved it more than this legend. Kramer moved with his family to Sandpoint when he was in the fourth grade. He was a Sandpoint High School Bulldog who went on to play at the University of Idaho. He was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1958 and played for them for his entire career—11 seasons in all. Among his many accomplishments include being named All-NFL in 1960, 1962, 1963, 1966 and 1967 and voted to three Pro Bowls. Kramer was also named to the NFL’s All-Decade team of the 1960s, the NFL’s 50th Anniversary Team in 1969 and the Super Bowl Anniversary Team. But one doesn’t have to make it to the NFL to be recognized for their contributions to Bulldog football. The list of Sandpoint High School athletes who have made it into the SHS Hall of Fame is extensive, and it continues to grow.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

Jay Van Den Berg played for the Bulldogs and graduated from SHS in 1989 and was later inducted into the SHS Hall of Fame with the first class, which included Jerry Kramer. “One of the highlights of my days at SHS was in 1987 when, as a junior, we made it all the way to the state championship game, losing to Idaho Falls,” says Van Den Berg. He was a three-sport athlete playing football, basketball and soccer, and said that playing sports year round helped him to become a better player in all three and to learn additional skills that complemented each sport. But his days as a Bulldog did not end there. He is actively involved in supporting Sandpoint High School athletics and has served as president of the Bulldog Bench for 10 years and counting. “I’m proud to be a Bulldog and am in a position where I can give of my time. It’s a way I can give back to the community and support the current generation,” says Van Den Berg.

Captain David Lyon, a former Sandpoint High School Bulldog who played football, basketball and ran track, was killed in Afghanistan in late 2013 and was enshrined into the SHS Hall of Fame in 2012. After his death, Captain Lyon’s SHS football number, 64, was retired during a ceremony at Memorial Field. Up until then, the number, which was also worn by Jerry Kramer while playing for the Green Bay Packers, was worn by the Bulldog’s top offensive lineman.

“At SHS I played wide receiver and also started at free safety once we got into league and playoff games,” says Bowman, who also played wide receiver at Stanford on a scholarship.

The last player to wear number 64 was Carlos Collado, who now plays for the Idaho Vandals. Kramer’s high school No. 38 is also retired.

“I was fortunate to have good people around me in high school with Coach Puailoa and Jack Dyck as role models and mentors,” says Bowman. “Coach Puailoa saw my potential and put together a plan to develop me physically and to put me in positions to be successful.”

Caleb Bowman is another member of the Sandpoint Bulldogs Hall of Fame. Bowman was an 11-time letterman for SHS including four-time basketball, three-time football and track and one-time baseball. He was the Super Prep and Prep Star First Team All American wide receiver in 1997 and Super Prep Midlands Offensive Player of the Year in 1997 as well.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

His stats as a Bulldog are impressive. In 1997, as wide receiver, he had 1,220 yards and 19 touchdowns, both of which are still single-season school records.

And while there have been many great players to come out of the SHS football program, the only Sandpoint High School Bulldog football team to bring home the trophy for the state championship was the 1997 team of which Bowman was a member.

Quentin Ducken, a current coach of SHS football, was one of the players on that team and has fond memories of his final season as a Bulldog. The team’s record that history-making season was 9-3. The championship game was played on the “Smurf Turf ” at Boise State University where the Bulldogs beat the Eagle Mustangs 24-21. “The score at halftime was 21-10, Eagle,” recalls Ducken. “Matt Lindgren kicked a 44-yard field goal that bounced twice on the cross bar before it went in! After a great halftime pep talk, we came out and our defense shut down the Mustangs’ offense and our offense took off. Travis Knaggs (cornerback) tipped the last pass to stop the Mustangs’ final drive.” Ducken goes on to say that the Bulldog offense needed to run out the clock with a first down. “Caleb Bowman gave the audible sign, QB Paul

Nieman gave me the silent snap signal, and I snapped the ball. He threw it to Bowman, who dove for the first down to seal the deal!” In addition to the key plays, Ducken describes how incredible it was to see so much of the Sandpoint community in the stands during the game. “The welcome home parade was great. The streets were full of people and signs,” recalls Ducken fondly. Bowman agrees that community support in Sandpoint is key to the players’ success. “I was fortunate to have grown up in Sandpoint and to have a lot of support from the community both on and off the field. Sports provide the opportunity to work with others toward a common goal and to learn how to deal with successes, challenges and failures,” says Bowman, who along with Van Den Berg

SandpointLivingLocal.com

is a member and supporter of the Bulldog Bench. “Sandpoint has always been generous in supporting our young students, and it’s my hope that they continue to have the same or more opportunities than I had.” Having been not only on the championship team but inducted into the Hall of Fame, Bowman knows what it takes to succeed in athletics and looks forward to seeing where his former teammate, Ryan Knowles, will go with these young men. “A championship football team requires a closeknit group of young men who are willing to do the work together,” says Bowman. “It takes a coach that has the vision and the ability to build and maintain a program. A coach that makes the work fun for the kids. I believe SHS has that in Coach Knowles, and I’m excited for our student athletes and the opportunities that lie ahead.”

a Fiber Network

What it Takes to Build

HOW THIS INFRASTRUCTURE IS TRANSFORMATIVE FOR COMMUNITIES

SINCE TING INTERNET CONSTRUCTION STARTED IN APRIL 2018, TEAMS HAVE BEEN MAKING STEADY PROGRESS ON BUILDING THE NETWORK. THE FIRST TING CUSTOMERS GOT LIT UP AT THE END OF JUNE, WITH MORE BUSINESSES AND RESIDENTS BEING LIT EVERY DAY.

W

e’ve all come up against slow, sluggish connections, unreliable access and cramped bandwidth. With true gigabit fiber access, families and businesses will be able to do everything they need to do online with ease. No more hogging the bandwidth and no more downtime. Fiber is more reliable, faster and makes the Internet more useful, so you can do what you need to go online without even thinking about your connection. Fiber networks aren’t a quick and dirty fix to bad Internet access. But when it comes to your town’s future, are you really interested in a BandAid solution? True fiber means hard work. It means building a network from scratch. A huge part of what backs fiber speed up for the long term is a strong, dedicated construction build. That can mean time. It also means a design with longevity. It means real people on the ground working hard every day. Building a fiber network means doing the work to dig, lay conduit and blowing fiber directly to homes and businesses so they can get the Internet access they need.

The Sandpoint fiber build Since Ting Internet construction started in April 2018, teams have been making steady progress on building the network. The first Ting customers got lit up at the end of June, with more businesses and residents being lit every day. How construction works: from announcing a neighborhood to lighting up customers They start by announcing neighborhoods and areas for expansion. A number of factors weigh into this decision, including demand for Ting, which is determined by pre-orders. Next, designing the build. Ting passes every address in the neighborhoods where they build, so eventually, if they want it, everyone will be able to have a fiber connection. Building a fiber network means laying conduit, that will eventually house fiber, underground. Wherever they go, Ting partners with local municipalities to make this work happen. Then they get down to the good stuff, real

SandpointLivingLocal.com

dirt and hard work to lay conduit and build fiber cabinets. Once all the necessary infrastructure is in place, they start blowing fiber—a process where they route fiber through the underground conduit placed earlier in construction. When they’re blowing fiber, they’re actually running fiber across long distances, often without the need to dig. After blowing fiber, it’s finally time to start lighting up homes and businesses. What fiber access can mean for a town At Ting, they believe there’s a better way, not just to make everything they do on the Internet faster, but with capacity to use the Internet in new, incredible ways tomorrow. They believe that fiber is transformative for communities, bringing with it exciting new opportunities for the community at large, for young and old alike. To learn more about Ting fiber Internet and the build in Sandpoint, go to Ting.com/Sandpoint. You can pre-order there also to let them know you want fiber in your neighborhood.

Enough Already!

Nutrition myths that won’ t seem to go away

This is part one of a two-part series

By Kenny Markwardt, CSCS, Owner, CrossFit Sandpoint Fat is Bad

LET’S FACE IT, THERE ARE MANY MYTHS WHICH SURROUND OUR HEALTH. It’s not always easy to distinguish fact from fiction. Below I hope to clear up some of the confusion for you!

Before people were afraid of carbohydrates, they were afraid of fat. Even though the height of that wave was nearly two decades ago, the idea that fat is bad has still hung on fairly strong. Again, as with carbohydrates, fat is a very important part of a well-rounded diet. Your body needs fats for healthy hormone production and maintenance, so eliminating fats entirely is not a good idea either. I’ll say it again; weight loss is going to be a factor of calories in versus calories out, not because a certain macronutrient is making them fat.

Carbs Are Bad I wrote about this subject recently, so I won’t go too far into this again, but contrary to current popular belief, carbohydrates are not inherently bad for you. Carbohydrates have a very important place in a well-rounded nutrition plan. They are your body’s preferred source of energy, especially in highintensity activities such as exercise. Eliminating carbohydrates because it’s the latest fad to do is unfounded. Weight loss is—and always will be—a factor of calories in versus calories out. Carbohydrates specifically are not the reason anyone is overweight. Study after study has shown that macronutrient ratio is not a factor in overall weight loss. There are pros and cons to each of protein, fat and carbohydrate, but specifically trying to remove any is just misguided.

Protein is Bad There’s a bit of a theme going here, but I think they’re all worth addressing. In general, most people are aware of the fact that protein intake is an important factor in any nutrition plan, but there are voices out there proclaiming that

H E A LT H Y T I P

SNACK PACK It’s back to school time! If you are packing snacks for your kids, here is a perfect opportunity to include at least one fruit and veggie. Smart snacks include fresh fruit (apple, pear and bananas), Greek yogurt, nuts, baby carrots with hummus, roasted edamame and, of course, a bottle of water.

too much protein is bad for you, specifically in the realm of kidney health. This is largely due to one study that was later disproved. Protein is essential for tissue repair and overall health. Because of the available sources of protein, it is typically very hard to overeat, so it is generally a good idea to make protein intake your primary or secondary (after vegetables) goal for every meal of the day. Salt is Bad This is an interesting one, as salt’s relationship to hypertension and kidney damage is typically more a correlation than causation. Salt itself is a very important mineral to maintain in your diet, so trying to eliminate it altogether is not a good idea. However, most highly processed foods are high in sodium, and most people who tend to eat highly processed foods have a penchant for other unhealthy foods that cause high blood pressure and kidney damage. So, though salt and high sodium intake seems to be a causation for people diagnosed with hypertension and poor kidney health, the takeaway is not to put down the salt shaker so much as it is to put down the hot dogs and potato chips. Gluten is Bad Gluten’s evil has been propagated more and more lately, but as with the others above, it’s just not inherently bad, and while eliminating it has caused a great deal of people to lose weight and feel better, the reason they saw those results was

not due to gluten itself but more because they were overeating the foods that gluten is found in. By eliminating gluten, you typically find yourself eating more meat and vegetables and therefore eat less processed foods, less sugar, drink less alcohol and overall eat less calories. Certainly, there are people with gluten intolerances or Celiac Disease, and those are very real issues. But not everyone needs to or should bother trying to eliminate gluten entirely.

www.SandpointWest.com 1905 Pine Street | 263-6633 Environmentally Friendly Products

Detoxes are Important and Effective Oh boy, if gluten’s relationship to the devil isn’t my favorite thing to roll my eyes at, it’s detoxes and cleanses. These are some of the most incredibly popular and perpetuated scams around, and I applaud the creativity and gusto that must go into the creation of these ideas. It amazes me that in the day and age of the Internet, people still think these are effective or a good idea. Unfortunately, the vast majority (and possibly entirety) of detox supplement companies cannot even define or label the specific toxins they are targeting. Certainly, there are things that enter the body that are harmful and should be eliminated. The great thing is that we already have very powerful and effective tools for that task—the liver, kidneys and lungs. All of which greatly benefit from a well-rounded, nutritious diet, not a drastic elimination of all foods and a short-term introduction of lemonade, juices, apple cider vinegar or anything else. Eat a wellbalanced diet, and you’ll be fine.

THE TROUBLE WITH FAT How to treat that tricky stubborn fat BRI WILLIAMS, RN, BSN REFINED AESTHETICS MED SPA, PLLC, SANDPOINT

W

hen it comes to weight loss and stubborn fat, most of us have struggled at one point or another. Diet and exercise are the most important roles in a healthy and toned physique, but when our efforts fall short it is hard not to get discouraged. The green smoothies, lean protein and gym routine sometimes are not enough to help us get rid of the stubborn fat that likes to reside on our stomach, inner thighs, above our knees, under our chin and other pesky areas. You will be happy to hear, however, that there are treatments that can help eliminate this stubborn fat and have you flaunting your most confident body—without going under the knife! The two most popular treatments that have been scientifically researched and proven to permanently destroy fat cells are Kybella (deoxycholic acid) and a process known as cryolipolysis (the use of subzero temperatures to destroy fat cells by freezing them). If you have areas of stubborn fat that you want to get rid of permanently, read on. Kybella (Deoxycholic Acid) Synthetic deoxycholic acid is the active ingredient in Kybella. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into areas of fat, the fat cell is destroyed, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fat mass. Once destroyed, these fat cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not expected once you reach your desired aesthetic goal.

Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to hear about our monthly specials.

It is important to note that, as with any prescription medication, there can be side effects and it is important that this treatment is completed by a well-trained and certified provider. The most common side effect is swelling, which typically resolves in one to two weeks. Kybella is only FDA approved to treat submental fat (fat beneath the chin/double chin). Many providers, however, use this medication off label to treat other areas of the body. If you have larger areas of fat you would like treated, the stomach or love handles for instance, you may find that treatments like Cool Sculpting ™ or Cryo Skin ™ are better options for you. They involve freezing your fat! That’s right! Cryolipolysis Cryolipolysis in a noninvasive body contouring treatment used to reduce fat-cell volume by freezing fat cells. This results in apoptosis (cell death) of the fat cells. This is achieved without risk to the other tissues (skin, blood vessels, muscle fibers) because the intracellular electrolytes of the fat cell are the first to crystallize in the cold before other cells. The two most common treatments for cryolipolysis are Cool Sculpting ™ and Cryo Skin ™. They both involve applying subzero temperatures to the desired treatment area, and the length of treatments depends on which area of the body you are treating and which device is being used. The fat waste is processed through your lymphatic system and excreted, not reabsorbed into the body. Both Cool Sculpting ™ and CryoSkin ™ treatments are non-invasive and completed in office. No anesthesia, no downtime and no pain. Contraindications for both treatments include pregnancy/ nursing, cold intolerance conditions (Raynaud’s Syndrome), uncontrolled diabetes, and kidney or liver disease. P

rostate cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related death in men in the United States, with an estimated one in 19 men developing invasive prostate cancer by age 60 or older. Ovarian cancer accounts for 5 percent of cancer deaths in women because four out of five ovarian cancer patients are diagnosed in an advanced stage of the disease. This makes awareness key for both cancers.

Prostate cancer can be found before symptoms start with two types of screenings. Testing the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in a man’s blood can help indicate if he has prostate cancer. A digital rectal exam can also detect if there are abnormal issues within the prostate gland. Symptoms of prostate cancer can include problems urinating such as a slow or weak urinary stream, frequent urination, blood in the urine or semen, erectile dysfunction, pain in the hips, spine, ribs, weakness or numbness of the legs or feet and loss of bladder or bowel control from cancer pressing on the spinal cord.

Ovarian cancer originates in women in the coating of your inner abdomen and pelvis, in one or both ovaries, or in the areas of the fallopian tubes. Ovarian cancer often goes undiagnosed until it is in an advanced stage. There is not a screening for ovarian cancer so it is important to pay attention to any symptoms experienced. Symptoms of ovarian cancer include bloating or increase in abdominal size, pelvic or abdominal pain, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly, and frequent or urgent urination.

Treatments for ovarian and prostate cancer can weaken the pelvic muscles resulting in urinary incontinence, urgency and frequency. Cancer rehabilitation therapy can help prepare patients for cancer treatments. Therapy also helps patients tolerate and recover from cancer treatments with less pain, resulting in a higher quality of life.

If you are experiencing any of those symptoms, you should make an appointment for a physical exam with your health-care provider, including a pelvic exam. An imaging test such as a transvaginal ultrasound can be performed to see if there are any growths on your ovaries. Sandpoint Women’s Health provides transvaginal ultrasound. For more information go to SandpointWomensHealth.com/ultrasound.

The therapists at Bonner General Health’s Performance Therapy Services clinic develop treatment plans tailored to each patient’s needs. Our therapists use a wide variety of treatment options to strengthen pelvic muscles such as biofeedback, electrical stimulation, manual therapy, joint mobilization, pain management, pelvic muscle exercises and training, and therapeutic exercises that strengthen and stabilize the core.

Treatments for ovarian cancer typically involve a combination of surgery and chemotherapy. It is usually recommended to remove the uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes, and possibly affected lymph nodes. In some cases only the ovary affected with cancer is removed.

For more information on the cancer rehabilitation services provided at Performance Therapy Services go to BonnerGeneral.org/cancer-rehabilitation. Information in this article was obtained from the American Cancer Society, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Prostate cancer is cancer of the male reproductive system that starts in the prostate tissue. Outside of skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. All men are at risk of prostate cancer; chances of prostate cancer increase with age and family history.

NO GAIN IN PLAYING THROUGH PAIN Injury rates and youth sports BY RYAN EGAN, LICENSED JOINT AND MOVEMENT SPECIALIST AND OWNER OF MVMNT GYM SANDPOINT

F

or whatever reason, injuries are like a badge of honor in most circles. Watching a couple of wounded has-beens compare scars is practically stand-up comedy. However, injuries are far from funny; they can downright change the course of a person’s life. The pursuits that were once joyous become dusty “used-to coulds” in a growing list of “I can’t do that anymore.” Injuries happen, it’s life, and life is far from perfect. Playing sports and living high-octane lifestyles of adrenalinefueled shenanigans will leave its marks. But as an athlete, and father of three, my most important athletic days are ahead of me. I want to play hard with my kids. More importantly, I want my kids to play hard with me and avoid the pitfalls that have left me with countless ailing war wounds. So as a dad, I want to help my kids play as injury free as possible. Two million kids, ages 5 to 18, playing any youth sports will be injured this year. Overuse injuries account for nearly half of injuries to middle and high school students—all of which are preventable. Since 2000, there has been a five-fold increase in serious shoulder and elbow injuries in youth baseball and softball. Sixty-two percent of sport related injuries occur during practice. Female athletes are at six times greater risk for injury than their male counterparts. Finally, according to the CDC, more than half of all of these injuries are preventable. So, if youth sport injury rates are skyrocketing and more than half of those injuries can be prevented, do we change the way we do things to ensure healthier and more productive athletics? Or do we just chalk it up to “just the cost of playing sports”? If half of the plane crashes that occurred last year were

60

easily preventable, would you take those precautions to prevent them? The first step to improving the wellbeing of youth athletics is injury risk and performance screening. Sports, in general, has a knack for identifying stars, but cares little for identifying kids of higher risk to preventable injuries. Second is education for coaches. Helping coaches identify warning signs during practices could prevent a lot of booboos. Third is better training programs. Integrating smarter training protocols that serve athletes at their specific physical, mental and emotional developmental stages can work wonders. I have seen too many coaches implementing collegiate-level programs designed for fully developed adults to 14-year-olds who can’t even touch their toes. Lastly, kids who do have a shot at athletic scholarships severely hurt their eligibility when they’re injured. So if you’re a parent with a star that plays through the pain, please keep in mind schools don’t recruit kids who are hurt. There is no gain in playing through pain. These kids are not professional athletes, so they should not be expected to “just play through it.” Nurturing their passions and helping them build a healthy relationship with sports, while teaching them to care for their bodies intelligently, will forge resilient men and women free from unnecessary joint problems when they’re older. And as for the kids who do have a shot at high-level athletics, preventing injuries only helps their chances of success. Injury prevention and performance are just two sides to the same coin.

EVOLVING OUR APPROACH TO HEALING CHRONIC ILLNESSES

Treat the cause, not the symptoms BY SCOTT PORTER, CENTER FOR FUNCTIONAL NUTRITION

T

here is a rapidly growing movement in our country that approaches wellbeing from a new perspective. This evolution of medicine challenges us to direct our attention to addressing the underlying causes of disease rather than merely treating the symptoms. Understanding the contributors to an illness brings greater insight to chronic and complex disorders. I now recognize that many diseases once thought to have no identifiable cause actually have multiple influencing factors. I’ve also discovered a single imbalance in our body can often lead to several different, seemingly unrelated, problems. An example of a challenging disease to treat is eosinophilic esophagitis. This is where the white blood cell count in the esophagus is high. People may not be able to swallow and gag frequently. The esophagus may become narrow due to scarring. The typical focus is on the problem in the throat. With an expanded view, this disease can be seen as a whole-body allergy and autoimmune response involving cells called eosinophil. These cells originate in bone marrow and are naturally in the body. They are used to fight parasites and are part of the immune system. Something is triggering them. In high quantities in the blood or intestines, eosinophil can create problems. They will be responsible for destroying tissue when out of control as they bind to antibodies and are capable of killing pathogens and cells—even our own cells. Typical conventional treatment would prescribe steroids and acid-reducing medications, or even sometimes stretch the esophagus. The focus here remains on the problem, not the cause.

MOST DOCTORS JUST AREN’T TRAINED TO THINK

Using a multi-factorial and multi-symptomatic approach allows us to address each of the areas that

ABOUT THE UNDERLYING CAUSES OF DISEASE, SUCH AS ALLERGENS, NUTRITION, TOXINS, MICROBES AND STRESS. THIS MEANS WE EACH HAVE TO TAKE A GREATER LEVEL OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR OWN HEALTH AND BECOME ACTIVE IN THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF OUR WELLBEING.

typically contribute to such an issue. This would include looking at diet, nutrient deficiencies, genetics, gut imbalances, bacterial overgrowth, parasites, inflammation, food sensitivities, environmental toxins, hormones and detoxification. It also means paying attention to related health problems. Sleep, mood and energy can all be affected. High numbers of eosinophil are associated with irritable bowel disease, heart inflammation, destruction of the nerves and spinal cord, cirrhosis of bile ducts, skin disease and other inflammatory diseases. We could apply this same multi-factorial and multisymptomatic approach to arthritis, digestive disorders, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, cystic fibrosis, osteoporosis, multiple sclerosis, autism, depression and cancer. Most doctors just aren’t trained to think about the underlying causes of disease, such as allergens, nutrition, toxins, microbes and stress. This means we each have to take a greater level of responsibility for our own health and become active in the circumstances of our wellbeing. This evolution of medicine, of which I am a part of, encourages each of us to not only ask “what” is going on, but it more importantly requires us to answer the question “why.” Evolving our approach to healing chronic illness moves us beyond a medication-centered mindset to also consider what is giving rise to illness. It involves looking at the interplay between our genetics, environment and lifestyle and how these affect our long-term health and influence complex, chronic disease. Scott Porter, a functional medicine pharmacist, is the director of the Center for Functional Nutrition at Sandpoint Super Drug.

Meeting

Aggression

WITH KINDNESS IMPORTANT TOOLS FOR YOUR CHILD TO KNOW WHEN IT COMES TO BULLYING

BY PATTY HUTCHENS

I

t’s back to school time. While for some students it can be an exciting time of reuniting with their friends, for others it can produce a great deal of anxiety. The reason? They have been victims of bullying in the past and returning to that environment can be scary and intimidating. For many in the older generation, we equate bullying with the mean kid on the playground who pushes others around. But for the younger generation, bullying takes on a whole new form. Social media provides an entirely new platform for people to say negative, mean things about one another. And not having to say those things face to face provides even more anonymity for the aggressor. In recent years, the Centers for Disease Control and the Department of Education have taken a hard look at bullying. It has defined the elements to include unwanted aggressive behavior, observed or perceived power imbalance, and repetition of behaviors or a high likelihood of repetition. Bullying can include either direct or indirect contact with the targeted victim. Direct would be something done in the presence of the victim, and indirect contact would be along the lines of the spreading of rumors. The unwanted aggressive behavior can take on many forms including physical, verbal, relational and damage to property. Not only that, it can be done in a variety of ways including cyberbullying. And although we think of bullying as something that is done among the youth, the effects on the victim can carry well into adulthood and can even be a contributing factor in suicide. According to counselor Barb Perusse, LPC who in her practice works closely with children, the biggest form of bullying she sees is through social media. “It is also common for kids to say mean things to others in the hallways at school or they go out of their way to exclude others,” she said. She cites one example of a child who was told that she was ugly and should die. “When things like this are said, I try to encourage those that I counsel to look at the words being directed at them from a different perspective. I ask them, ‘Is this OK? Would you ever think this is OK to say to another person?’ By taking themselves out of it, it helps increase their self-esteem and helps them to not see it as a personal attack.” Perusse said she sees the non-stop social media as nothing short of dangerous. “We see people living what we perceive as a perfect life, and

SandpointLivingLocal.com

that simply is not true. We cannot and should not compare ourselves to others,” she said. According to the national organization Stop Bullying, research shows that persistent bullying can lead to feelings of isolation, rejection, exclusion or despair. And while the bullying can definitely be a risk factor of suicide, most people who take their own lives have multiple risk factors. According to the Centers for Disease Control, any involvement with bullying behavior is one stressor that can significantly contribute to feelings of hopelessness, which in turn can raise the risk of suicide. The fact that people are now talking about this subject has helped to raise awareness about the harm that bullying does to all youth who are involved in bullying in any manner. It has also opened up a dialogue among schools, parents and community members to discuss the topic. So, what can we, as educators and parents, do to help reduce, and hopefully eliminate all together, this horrific practice? Erin Roos is a teacher at Sandpoint High School. She teaches a class called Real Life which instructs students on skills to manage time, stress, conflict, creating positive communication and more. She also teaches a mentorship class that is designed for upperclassmen who wish to be positive role models for the student body. Each mentor leads a multigrade level group of students on topics pertinent to the social/emotional and academic/career planning needs of teens on a monthly basis. And while all this has done a great deal to help the students, the reality is that the problem remains.

FEATURE STORY “Schools are teaching respect, acceptance and inclusion, but unfortunately bullying still exists,” said Roos. Each year, Roos shows a video to her students on how to stop bullying dead in its tracks. The video is presented by Brooks Gibbs, an awardwinning social skills educator who teaches students, parents and educators how to build emotional resilience and live by the Golden Rule. Gibbs explains that sociologists have studied bullying for decades. However, instead of referring to the act as bullying, they refer to it as dominance behavior. “When a bully picks on someone, they are trying to demonstrate their power over that person,” said Gibbs. And when the victim of bullying responds in anger, the aggressor thrives on that behavior. Instead, said Gibbs, if the victim is resilient, emotionally strong and mentally tough, then no matter what the aggressor says, it will show them that they are not successful in their taunting. Gibbs explains that while some may believe it requires high self-esteem and selfconfidence on the part of the victim to respond in such a way as “I don’t care what you say to me,” it is really more a game of winning and losing. “The way that they [victims] win is by not getting upset, and the bully will lose. And when people lose, they don’t like playing the game, so they just leave you alone,” explains Gibbs. “Don’t get upset no matter what the bully says. I’m not saying it’s easy, but in logic it’s very simple.” He says the act of bullying is when people hurt one’s feelings. “Many people think of bullying as more complex than that. Some people think of bullying as an act of violence,” said Gibbs. But an act of violence, such as

if the victim is resilient, emotionally strong and mentally tough, then no matter what the aggressor says, it will show them that they are not successful in their taunting. punching someone, is a crime, and by all means a person’s response to violence would naturally be to respond in anger, and they should report the crime. He warns that it is important to differentiate between the act of bullying and a crime of battery or assault. When addressing how we, as a society, can help children who are victims of bullying, he encourages people to empower our youth. By empowering kids to solve their own social problems, Gibbs said three things occur: They grow in self-esteem, self-confidence and selfworth. “All these words have one thing in common— the word ‘self.’ You cannot do it for the child; he or she has to do it for him or herself,” said Gibbs. By solving problems by themselves, children will grow in all these areas.

Roos said she echoes Gibbs’ lessons in her class by discussing with her students the benefits of responding calmly, with humor or not responding at all. “The bully is usually seeking a strong reaction or emotional response to feel powerful,” said Roos. “We also investigate assertive responses as opposed to aggressive or passive responses to bullying. This can include assertive body language, eye contact, tone of voice, setting boundaries with people and having a prepared and practiced response. Even surprising the bully by being friendly and making efforts to get to know them better works. We know that people tend to treat each other better when they know more about each other and recognize they are more similar than different.” She advises that if the bullying behavior increases in frequency and intensity, she and

other staff encourage students to tell someone. “Preferably, tell a trusted adult or someone with authority. Keeping documentation of the bullying and having witnesses is helpful. This includes text messages, screen shots and video,” she said. Roos emphasizes that it is important that students know not to retaliate if being bullied online. “Those who have authority at school cannot help you if you are bullying back. Again, keep evidence of the bullying and do not respond online other than assertively saying the comments are not appreciated. Students have the power to control their social media privacy settings. They may block anyone with whom they do not wish to communicate, and they can report any bullying to the social media website. They can also take a break from social media

and stop using it for several weeks or months. Many students are pleasantly surprised at the relief they feel from not worrying about the possibility of reading posts, tweets or snaps that might upset them,” she said. Last year in the connections class, Roos and the mentors discussed with the students what it means to be an upstander, as opposed to a bystander. “On social media, this may look like posting a positive comment about someone after a bully has posted something hurtful. Or it could include telling the victim something you appreciate about them or what they do really well,” explained Roos. “This seems to be effective in shutting down the bully without causing more confrontation, as well as building up the bullied person.” Parents should be aware of their child and his or her behaviors. Warning signs that your child is being bullied can be many, including: unexplained injuries, lost or destroyed personal property, frequent headaches or stomach aches,

or an adult if this is happening. I strongly encourage parents to notice their child’s mood before and after they are checking their social media and to talk to them about it. Parents should also be checking their child’s social media accounts regularly to see if any bullying is occurring.” It is a complex and highly technological world in which children have to navigate these days. And while there is no easy answer to how we can put an end to bullying, Roos said it all boils down to this: “I believe the most valuable tools we can supply our kids with are self-confidence, self-love and assertiveness training,” she said. RYAN KNOWLES RETURNS TO SHS

See what’s in store for 2018 Bulldog football By Patty Hutchens

I

t is going to be an exciting year for Sandpoint High School football. Returning to his alma mater to assume the position of head coach is Ryan Knowles. For anyone who lived in Sandpoint during the 1990s and followed Bulldog football, his name is likely very familiar.

Coach Knowles grew up in Sandpoint and is thrilled to have returned with his wife and two children to his hometown. “I was born at Bonner General, lived in three different houses, attended Farmin/Stidwell and the old Lake Street Center for sixth grade,” said Coach Knowles.

“From 2014 to 2017, I was the defensive line coach and special teams coordinator for Colgate,” he said. Knowles met his wife, Megan, when they both attended the University of Idaho where she was a standout soccer player. Together, the couple has a daughter, Aubrey, 11, and a son, Drew, 7. Ryan shared that his connection with Sandpoint High School principal, Tom Albertson, led to the phone call about the head coaching position at SHS. “Once he laid out the situation, it became a good opportunity for me to continue my football ambitions while being closer to both Megan’s and my roots,” said Knowles. “We vacation in Sandpoint every summer, and we will now call it our home.”

After graduating from Sandpoint High School, Coach Knowles went onto attend the University of Idaho. He redshirted in 1997 and started at defensive end in 1998, the year the Vandals were conference champs and the Humanitarian Bowl champs. In his new role, Coach Knowles said he is looking forward to game day with his players. “I look forward to a new set of opponents, building a traditional contender, getting to know and develop football in Bonner County and the Inland Northwest,” he said, adding that he also looks forward to bringing some of his connections to this area to increase the excitement of the game of football.

AMBITIONS WHILE BEING Coach Knowles majored in education— kindergarten through 12th grade CLOSER TO BOTH MEGAN’S physical education and seventh through AND MY ROOTS,” SAID 12th grade math. In 2003, he moved getting everyone on board. “The team to Kent, Washington, where he taught at Northwood Middle School and has stars, but it also has backups, role players, was the assistant football coach at Kentridge High School before moving scout team players, assistant coaches, managers, to Kentlake High School in Kent where he taught for one year and served boosters, etc. All these relationships take a lot of as assistant football coach there. time. IT’S A GREAT DAY TO BE A

Other key players and positions include the quarterback position. “QB is critical. He will make more decisions over the course of a game than all the other positions,” said Coach Knowles. “Pettit and Plummer have done a nice job learning the new system. He adds that the defensive line is another critical position. “When you are good up front, you have a chance to win ball games. I think we can be very good here as well.” Coach Knowles said that the type of offense they run will be one that emphasizes running the ball and creating big plays. “We will need to run the ball if we are going to have success as a team,” said Coach Knowles. “Mitton is a returning All-League guy that we will lean on, and there are others that can step in.” Last year, the Bulldogs finished in first place in the Inland Empire League 4A Division, and Coach Knowles expects nothing less this season. “I expect us to play sound, fundamental football. I want our players to accept their roles on the team and perform them better than anyone else can. I want to continue our run as a playoff contender,” said Knowles. When asked who Coach Knowles views as his team’s biggest opponent, he said it is his own team. “I want to make sure we do not beat ourselves. If we make other teams beat us, we will have a successful year. We play up a division a lot with our geography the way it is. Post Falls, Lake City, Lewiston as well as University and Mt. Spokane will all be tough games,” he said. “Tough is OK. I expect to win the games we won last year, but our league has been so close and competitive. I am not sure anyone is that much better to say anyone else is going to run away with it. I hope we do, but that would be foolish thinking.” Coach Knowles has assembled a great staff of coaches, some new to the program and others who have coached in the past, including his dad, John Knowles. Ryan said some of the qualities he looks for in his assistant coaches are people who have a passion for teaching and football. “I want coaches to teach the fundamentals. I also want good guys who are easy to be around; guys who understand how teams work and the roles within it,” he said.

SandpointLivingLocal.com

BULLDOG

Coach Knowles’ philosophy toward coaching can be summed up in three words—toughness, courage and humility. “Toughness is the ability to withstand strain. These boys will need it their whole lives. Maybe football can teach them a little about it. Courage is the ability to face discomfort. These boys need face situations that will strain them and do what is right. Humility is understanding that you are part of something bigger. We represent Sandpoint for a short time, and we are all replaceable.” During the off-season the Bulldogs have been doing much to prepare. “We started with eight practices before we went to Eastern Camp for two days to maximize the 10-day window to practice with pads on,” said Coach Knowles. “The guys have been lifting weights three days a week since then. We added some additional running days in between. Also, the team gets together to throw once a week and work on OL/DL fundamentals.” As far as who will lead the team on the field, Coach Knowles has an application process for those who want to serve as captains. “If you want to lead this team, you will need to articulate why the team should follow you. Like applying for a job. It sorts out the guys that don't want to be captains—which is 100 percent OK— and those who think they should be ‘just because.’ Leadership is a process. Every player has a certain level of leadership in him or her. My hope is to raise the level within each player in the time I have them.”

” 76

Last year the Bulldogs finished in first place in the Inland Empire League 4A Division, and Coach Knowles expects nothing less this season.

SUPPORTING OUR STUDENT ATHLETES IT DOESN’T TAKE MUCH TO SHOW THEM THE COMMUNITY CARES

WITH SCHOOL UPON US, FALL SPORTS ARE SUDDENLY IN FULL SWING. Students have pep rallies, homecoming activities and more. But it’s not just the high school community that can lend support to the local teams; individuals, families and businesses can all do much to help support the youth in their extracurricular activities. Here are just a few ways that people can bring a community atmosphere to the various sporting events.

In addition to learning the skills of certain sports, there are many social benefits that are derived from participating in athletics. As fans, we can display good sportsmanship to our team, the opposing team and the officials. If you have younger children, bring them along to the games and emphasize how important it is to be supportive. It will help encourage them to be involved in sports as they grow older as well. After all, what child would want to play a sport knowing they could be ridiculed by the crowd?

Do you have a special skill from which some sports teams may benefit? Maybe a team needs help fundraising. If you have an expertise in this area, step up and offer to help. Maybe you have played a sport before and could help out at practice or coach some of the kids. Many kids need positive role models outside of their own parents, and being a volunteer on a sports team is just one of many ways you can make a difference in a young person’s life.

Are you part of a business that emphasizes involvement in the community? There are many ways the business sector can support youth sports. They can monetarily sponsor a team or allow employees a certain number of hours on the clock each month to give back to the community. Volunteering can be in a variety of ways. It can be through being a team manager, offering to speak to a group of athletes about the importance of representing the community in a positive light or even helping to coach. Whatever your passion, find a way that you can put it to use to support local youth.

Does your school have a booster club? If so, look into joining! Or if it doesn’t, maybe you are the kind of person who can rally people in the community to form a booster club. The reality is that when school budgets are cut, sports are typically the first thing to be cut. By having and donating to a booster club, your school athletes can receive support for costs that may not be covered by the school. Equipment gets old or may no longer be safe for the kids to use. Camps may be cost prohibitive for some students, so raising money for scholarships is a great benefit to the students.

TRAVEL & LEISURE

Vernon, British Columbia Where you can enjoy your American Discount STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARGUERITE CLEVELAND

V

ernon, British Columbia, is not on most people’s radar as a vacation destination, and that is what makes it so special. Set in the heart of Canada’s Okanagan Valley, this lovely area is known for its lakes, fruit orchards, world-class wineries and rolling hills. As summer’s warm temperatures begin to cool, the shoulder season in September is a perfect time to visit. Enjoy activities like mountain biking at SilverStar Mountain Resort and stand-up paddleboarding without the crowds; eat at farm-to-table restaurants which highlight the bounty of the fall harvest; and tour historical attractions and family friendly farms. You will also get to enjoy what the locals call the American discount. The current exchange rate is very favorable to the U.S. dollar. One USD is worth about $1.30 in Canadian currency and has been for the last six months. This works out to a 30 percent discount on your trip, and you’ll find prices in Vernon much less than the tourist destinations of Whistler, Victoria and Vancouver. Where to Stay Vernon has a variety of places to stay from resorts on the nearby lakes, chain hotels in town and vacation rentals. One local place that really stands out is the Vernon Lodge and Conference Center centrally located in the heart of Vernon and walking distance to many downtown restaurants and shops. The hotel has a beautiful three-story atrium with a natural stream incorporated into the design, which flows through the atrium surrounded by more than 1,000 plants. Soak in the pool or hot tub with the sounds of the creek trickling by. The Lodge Kitchen restaurant and bar are located in the atrium as well and make a good location for a first night in town meal.

SEPTEMBER MARKS THE BEGINNING OF THE SOCKEYE SALMON RUN, AND 2018 IS A DOMINANT YEAR WHICH MEANS THERE WILL BE A LOT OF SALMON. THE SOCKEYE SALMON ARE BRIGHT RED WITH GREEN HEADS, MAKING THEM EASILY VISIBLE IN THE WATER.

PHOTO COURTSEY OF OF ELEMENTS ADVENTURES

Where to Eat The Okanagan Valley is foodie heaven where fresh bountiful produce, handcrafted cheeses and meats are turned into delectable meals made by local chefs. Choices abound from a bus station restaurant, a downtown locals’ favorite, to winery bistros with stunning views. Take a tasting tour and stock up as you go for the ultimate picnic. The Chase Winery and Garden Bistro is on the Scenic Sip Trail, a group of eight wineries in Lake Country who joined together to promote this beautiful area. The Garden Bistro is an excellent place for lunch. Dine on a patio with views of the vineyard, orchards, Okanagan Lake and the surrounding mountains. This farm-to-table restaurant features a ½-acre organic vegetable garden. Chef Alex Lavroff designs the menu to showcase local flavors which complement the Chase wines. Each menu item has a suggested wine pairing. You’d never guess the Greyhound Bus Station would have one of the best breakfasts in Vernon. Eatology is a popular local café with the crowds to prove it. Service works a little differently here; you que up to the counter to order your breakfast and then are seated. There is always a line but the tables turn over quickly as if everyone knows they need to share this

great place without lingering overly long. Once seated, our food arrived promptly and my coffee cup was never left empty. The food was so good, not overly fancy but just good ingredients freshly prepared. Chicken and waffles were yummy but it was a hard decision as everything coming out of the kitchen looked delicious. Well worth a stop. Midtown Bistro is where the locals go to eat dinner. It is famous for its charcuterie boards. Each one is a work of art. Local meats and cheeses are surrounded with fresh-cut vegetables, fruit, a house-made dip, French bread and crackers adorned with edible flowers and herbs. It truly is a sight to behold. Enjoy with a handcrafted cocktail. The menu is a fresh take on comfort food. Think a gourmet version of meatloaf with mac and cheese. At the bottom of the menu is a list of all the local places Midtown Bistro sources their ingredients from. Truly a memorable meal. Things to Do September marks the beginning of the sockeye salmon run, and 2018 is a dominant year which means there will be a lot of salmon. The sockeye salmon are bright red with green heads, making them easily visible in the water. Elements Adventure Company offers a unique way to see the fall salmon run. as Big Canoes, they have a history. The Voyageur Canoes were copied from the canoes built by First Nations Peoples. They were paddled by the Voyageurs, French Canadians, who were fur trappers. Each modern canoe holds up to 11 adults or 15 kids, and it takes at least four adults to launch the 250-pound boat. The tours are led by Paddle Canada certified instructors, and you will get to view the salmon at one of their spawning grounds while also learning some canoeing skills. Take time to stop in the Kalavida Surf Shop, which has the vibes of a Hawaiian surf shop. Although there are no waves on Kalamalka Lake, this area has become one of the top destinations in Canada for stand-up paddleboarding or SUP. The extended shallow entry lake makes for nice warm water even into September. If you want to paddle as a group, check out the 17-foot Kracken, which holds six to 10 paddlers. Kalamalka Lake makes for a very scenic paddle. Many locals just paddle out and then relax on their boards while taking in the scenery. The Historic O’Keefe Ranch is a step back in time to the early settlers of the Okanagan Valley. The ranch was founded in 1867 at the end of the wagon road at the site of the stagecoach depot. It became a self-contained small town with a post office, blacksmith, grist mill, general store and a church. Today many of the old buildings still exist and can be explored on a self-guided tour. There is an interesting collection of farm equipment and other museum exhibits. Admission includes a 20-minute tour of the

O’Keefe mansion. Children will enjoy all the farm animals and exploring the corn maze. There is a restaurant on site and a gift shop filled with local products. It is very easy to fill half a day or more. The Okanagan Valley is known for its orchards and farms. You can’t really experience the area without visiting some of them. To learn more about where food comes from, make sure to visit Planet Bee which has a bustling bee hive you can observe from in the shop and learn about honey, mead and the importance of bees to the agricultural community. Davison Orchards has been a family farm for over 80 years. This bustling complex has a store, a restaurant and bakery utilizing farm-fresh produce, a playground and offers farm tours with samples of produce right where it is grown. What is old is new again at BX Press Cidery, where the cider is natural, crisp and refreshing served with a bit of history of the thirdgeneration apple growers and the cider. Ingredients:

• 1 package of cheese tortellini • 1 1/2 cups arugula • 3 medium peaches (white or yellow) • 1 bundle of asparagus • 1/8 cup shaved parmesan • Mission Olive Oil from Coeur d'Alene Olive Oil Company • Salt • Pepper

Method: • Wash all produce: arugula, peaches and asparagus. Dry and set aside. • Fill a pot with 4 quarts of water, add salt and a bit of olive oil. Bring to a rolling boil over high heat. • While waiting for the water to boil, take the asparagus and cut off the bottom 1 inch of thick stem. Cut asparagus into 1-inch pieces. • Heat cast-iron skillet over medium high heat. Add olive oil, asparagus and salt to taste. Sauté until cooked through, about 8 to 10 minutes. The color of the stem should turn bright green. Set aside. • Once water is boiling, add the package of tortellini. Stir continuously for 2 to 3 minutes (or follow instructions on the package if differs) so the pasta does not stick together. Remove from stove and drain in colander. Set aside. • With a paring knife, halve the peaches and remove the pits. Rub the peach halves on all sides with olive oil. • If you have a grill available, heat to medium high. Place peaches flesh down and grill for 4 to 5 minutes or until grill marks are seen. Turn peaches and grill skin side down for an additional 4 to 5 minutes, remove from grill and set aside. If you don’t have a grill, follow the same instructions but with a castiron skillet over the stove. • Let peaches cool slightly and then, with a paring knife, cut into wedge slices. Leave one peach halved for presentation if you would like. • In a large bowl, add tortellini, arugula, sliced peaches, asparagus, a pinch of salt and ⅛ cup CDA Olive Oil. Lightly toss together. • Add shaved parmesan on top to taste. Serve and enjoy!

Awakening the Best You WOMEN’S CONFERENCE ENCOURAGES BEING A CREATOR IN YOUR WORKPLACE AND LIFE BY PATTY HUTCHENS

O

n October 12, from 9am to 5pm at the Heartwood Center in Sandpoint, join Debbie Heiser and Misty Springer for an inspiring day. Awakening the Best You is an interactive conference during which attendees will experience growth as they participate in transformational exercises with other like-minded women. “Sometimes when we analyze what is holding us back from achieving our goals and dreams, the truth can be hard,” said Heiser. “The reality is that we can tend to be our biggest obstacles when it comes to falling short, feeling unfulfilled or discouraged.” Heiser has spent over 28 years in leadership with international, domestic and small business sectors and in volunteer roles in the community. She founded Three Vines Consulting and Leadership Development in 2016 with her focus on helping organizations, teams and individuals identify and maximize the infinite possibilities available to them. Springer is a certified holistic health coach and transformational coach with a background in mental health counseling. She assists women in harnessing the power of the mind, body and heart to create total transformation so they can be the best version of themselves. During Awakening the Best You conference, Heiser and Springer will focus on helping attendees pinpoint the limiting beliefs and behaviors that are prohibiting them from moving forward. “We will uncover what is holding you back from showing up as the woman you know in your heart and mind you want to be,” said Springer.

Tickets at:

CDAMASK.com

By envisioning what one wants to be, it is easier to achieve that goal. This conference will help attendees create that picture and provide them with tools one can implement in their everyday life. The price for this one-day conference is $175. You can register at Eventbrite.com and search “Awakening the Best You.”
