A
steady local economy, availability of jobs, affordable homeownership and year-round recreation are just a few of the reasons many locals are staying put in Spokane and many couples and families from larger markets are deciding to move here. As the population grows, the metropolitan area continues to expand. Five Mile, Mead, the Upper South Hill and the corridor between Spokane Valley and Liberty Lake are all seeing new condo and apartment complexes and designed neighborhoods. Being no further than 20 minutes from the downtown core from just about anywhere in town allows workers to choose the area of town they most enjoy while not being nearly as affected by their commute as larger metropolitan areas. While the expansion outward is to be expected, a resurgence and reinvestment in longstanding Spokane neighborhoods is also becoming more and more common. If you ask someone from Seattle where they are from, they will almost always tell you a very specific neighborhood: Green Lake, Belltown, Ballard, West Seattle. In Spokane, a common reply was a lot more broad: South Hill, Northside, Valley. But as neighborhoods continue to add a mix of business and residential, more and more locals are eager to share just “exactly” where they are from. Developers and those looking to open a business are finding that more and more homeowners are seeking a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood with a mixture of restaurants, shops and services near their home. While this is consumer driven, there are also other factors that are aiding in creation of these neighborhoods within Spokane. “For Spokane to continue to grow within the state-issued urban growth boundary we must develop smaller chunks of land,” said Nate Gant, a Broker at RE/MAX of Spokane with 12 years experience in the market. “To make these chunks of land financially feasible for development mixed use is the key. The commercial aspect offsets many of the costs of the residential development.”

The prime example of this is the Kendall Yards neighborhood, an area which is exploding in popularity. A five-minute stroll down Summit Parkway and you’ll encounter a myriad of dining options, several tasting rooms, ice cream, art space and local shops. The proximity to the Centennial Trail allows residents an easy commute into Downtown Spokane. Even with its close proximity to downtown, Kendall Yards feels far removed from a crowded city. “In the past, living downtown was only for the affluent. With the development of Kendall Yards and the downtown corridor, a young professional can now afford to live, work and play downtown,” said Gant. The diversity in dining options is a big draw here. You can get woodfired pizza whole or by the slice at Veraci, share delicious small plates at Wandering Table or have classic diner-style or a slightly more creative
breakfast at The Yards Bruncheon. There are two wineries as well as a specialty shop for those in search of an easy place to sample multiple Washington wines. Housing here is mixed with everything from studios to multi-level family living. A few apartments are located directly above the street with larger complexes adjacent to the core of the neighborhood. A little further down the street, there are condos, as well as single-family homes. Parks and plenty of green space are appealing to buyers, and the western front of the development is also seeing additional businesses and food options pop up. While prices are starting to stabilize, homes in Kendall Yards tend to be much higher than other areas of town, which is also having an impact on the neighborhood directly behind it.

West Central Spokane has gotten a bad rap for a long time, however, buyers who aren’t afraid of a little work on a home are finding affordable decades-old homes they can put their own stamp on. “Owner occupants have taken pride in the homes they purchase and really done wonders for the neighborhood,” said Gant. “This has allowed investors to purchase properties with a troubled past to renovate or vacant lots and build homes that have become the hot commodity.”

The walkability, close proximity to downtown, success of Kendall Yards and new businesses such as The Backyard have been key to West Central’s growth. Another neighborhood north of downtown that is seeing resurgence is the Garland District. Home prices here are typically still a little lower than newer developments, and the neighborhood features the same

eclectic mix of shops, dining, drinking and entertainment. Where Kendall Yards created something shiny, new and modern from a patch of barren ground, to the south, the Perry District is focused on keeping the look of the original neighborhood, and buyers are putting this neighborhood toward the top of their list. “For 10 years I described the Perry District as upcoming but not arrived— now it has absolutely arrived,” said Gant. Buyers are again drawn in by the neighborhood feel and easy walk to restaurants, cafés, studios and shops. and The Shop is a comfortable place for a coffee. The weekly summer farmers market is a huge draw, and kids love to run around Grant Park. Having an elementary school right in the middle of all the action is something young families find very appealing. There are also places to eat off the main drag like Wisconsinburger, located in the middle of a neighborhood at 9th and Hatch, and The Grain Shed, a local bakery with small brewery adjacent. Moving further up the hill, the addition of a Target superstore several years ago transformed the area of Regal Street between 46th and 57th. The City of Spokane is currently renovating the Southeast Sports Complex to include even more soccer fields, and the early stages of a new neighborhood adjacent to the fields are also in the works. Dubbed Radio Tower Village, the new development located across the street from Target will be a model very similar to Kendall Yards—a mixture of businesses, single-family homes and condos. Initial plans call for seven different commercial structures within the village and a total of more than 180,000 square feet of retail space. There are already several apartment complexes surrounding the area, giving these tenants an additional easily walkable neighborhood as well. Gant feels this trend is not likely to slow down anytime soon. 32

Unique Neighborhoods 34
SIZZLE
“People place high value on walkability, nearby shopping and local restaurants and are willing to pay for these conveniences and this simpler lifestyle.” While the housing market is fluid, the popularity of these neighborhoods has definitely driven up home values as more and more locals and newcomers find this style of living appealing. Gant says buyers should be prepared for as low as $175,000 for a nice home in West Central. In the Perry District they should always be prepared for a bidding war on property below $300,000. In Kendall Yards, a homebuyer should be prepared to pay over $300,000. It’s easy to fall in love with a home upon first impression, but planting roots in a neighborhood is a life-altering decision. Young people might not be thinking about kids playing in the front yard, and empty nesters might not realize the additional traffic or potential parking issues they might have to deal with. Gant recommends
really getting to know an area before committing to living there. “Walk through each neighborhood at various times of day and on different days of the week. Friday night at 10pm might feel far different than Sunday at 10am. This will give you a true sense of what suits your lifestyle,” he said. If you’ve lived in Spokane 20 years or 20 minutes, checking out these and other unique neighborhoods is a must do. You’ll find business owners committed to their neighborhood and a community that is proud to back them. Fun events, music and festivals are held often and bring out the best in neighborhood pride. The next time someone asks you where you’re from, will you say Spokane, North Spokane or perhaps something a little more specific?

Predictions on how the online retailer will impact the local real estate market — BY COLIN ANDERSON —
A
nyone driving I-90 west of Spokane has surely noticed the massive construction site near the airport. There are only so many companies out there that would build a facility of such size in our neck of the woods, and already having 50,000 employees in the state of Washington, Amazon was the prime suspect. Spokane’s worst-kept secret was confirmed this past summer, as the online retailer announced it is constructing another fulfillment center. This will be the fourth such center in the state, soon to join existing centers in DuPont, Kent and Sumner. According to Amazon, the facility will create 1,500 full-time jobs, and the number could swell to around 2,000 total jobs near the peak holiday seasons. “We’re excited to open a new state-of-the-art fulfillment center in Spokane and to continue innovating in our home state,” said Mark Stewart, Amazon’s vice president of North America Customer Fulfillment. “Washington is known for providing great opportunities for jobs and customer experience, and we are grateful to the dedicated local and state officials and teams who came together to support Amazon in bringing a new fulfillment center to Eastern Washington.” Amazon employees at the more than 600,000-square-foot fulfillment center will work alongside Amazon Robotics to pick, pack, label and ship items to customers such as games, housewares, school supplies

and pet toys. With more and more consumers choosing Amazon’s Prime service, the facility was necessary to continue to meet the demands of guaranteed two-day shipping around our region. Stateof-the-art technology combines human and robotic elements to ensure as smooth a process as you will find. “We are excited to have Amazon join our business community with a significant financial investment and new employment opportunities,” said Al French, Spokane County Commissioner for West Spokane. “Amazon is another Fortune 100 company to see Spokane as a critical part of their success and want to be part of Spokane’s growth.” Additional income opportunities are also likely to come along with the building of the new fulfillment center. Amazon is actively building its own distribution network to have more control over how and when packages are received. The company is using a model similar to Uber or Lyft, in which those with a working vehicle can sign up for a block of time to deliver packages without having to commit to full-time employment. Called Amazon Flex (Flex. Amazon.com) drivers choose a block of time they are available, pick up their assigned deliveries and make the drop. Depending on demand and workload, hourly rates can range anywhere from $18 to $25 per hour, according to the company. Amazon Delivery Service Partners are also being recruited around the country (Logistics.Amazon.com). This service is intended for

entrepreneurs who want to start up their own business but don’t have a lot of capital or equity to do so. Startup costs are as little as $10,000, and Amazon provides branded delivery vans, uniforms and consistent schedules while the owner of the business focuses on building and managing their team of employees. Carriers are encouraged to expand their fleet to several delivery vehicles, and six-figure incomes are very possible. In the fall, Amazon announced it would be upping the minimum wage to all workers to $15 per hour. Many of the fulfillment center jobs will be in this range, but there will also be several management-level positions as well. A concern amongst citizens is the potential to see large increases in home and rental prices with an influx of new industry heading to town. The Spokane real estate market is currently in a seller’s market with quite low inventory and has been for some time, according to Ken Sax, designated Broker at Keller Williams Spokane and 2018 president of the Spokane Association of Realtors. “As a result, we have seen consistent price increases with demand being greater than inventory. Think back to 12th-grade economics class and learning about supply and demand,” he said. Another factor in the rise in home prices is individuals and families moving in from areas such as Seattle, Portland and California, where home prices are much steeper. “This places additional demand on our already low inventory, which continues putting an upward pressure on our prices,” said Sax. While the facility will employ many at or around the $15-per-hour rate, many managerial and professional jobs will also be available. People in these positions are more likely to look at purchasing a home, whether they are already a Spokane-area resident or moving here from another location. As inventory continues to remain low, Sax expects that the completion of the Amazon fulfillment center will aid in prices continuing to rise. “I expect the completion of the Amazon facility to do the same thing … put upward pressure on our prices as demand continues to increase.” It isn’t just home owners who are battling to find housing, but renters are also having a difficult time securing homes, condos and apartments. Average rent continues to rise with a two-bedroom apartment coming in at around $920 per month. Occupancy has been historically low as well, hovering under 3 percent for much of the past few years. Individuals working full time at Amazon’s base pay would make around $31,000. For the employee to rent the average two-bedroom apartment in Spokane, they would need to devote 35 percent of their pre-tax income to rent. 40

The federal definition of being “moderately to severely cost burden’” is set at 30 percent. Developers are constructing new complexes in the north, south, valley and Kendall Yards, and most units are being scooped up before the complex is even completed. Sax feels that additional workers will put additional demand on the rental market as well. “The same supply-and-demand dynamics work the same in the rental arena. And in the rental market, we see demand being greater than inventory. Therefore, my feelings here are the same as in the sales arena,” he said. The news is good for sellers, however. Anyone who picked up a home during the recession or those who bought in the peak pre-recession have likely regained their value and should have plenty of equity to work with if they are looking to upgrade. While inventory is low and there is competition out there, The Spokane County Association of Realtors feels that many homeowners are listing too high and might have unrealistic expectations of their home’s value, even in a seller’s market. “As a result, we are seeing more and more sellers sitting on the market since they are overpriced. Then the perception by many is that the market is shifting because they’re seeing their neighbor’s house not selling when in fact, the house isn’t selling because it’s overpriced,” said Sax. He recommends finding an experienced Realtor and listening to them as they understand market dynamics. In the case of buyers, Sax said now is not the time to low-ball offer and make huge demands from sellers. Those sellers will often move off from these offers and wait for one more to their liking. As in any market he recommends being pre-approved for your mortgage so you are able to show the seller you are serious. There are many factors that go into the ebb and flow of a housing market. The state of the economy, interest rates, unemployment, inventory and even what time of year. The opening of Amazon’s new fulfillment center is simply another factor to consider whether you are looking for a first home, an upgrade or looking to downsize. Spokane is growing and currently shows no signs of slowing down. With a Fortune 100 company placing a major employment center in the city’s backyard, local officials are hopeful that more companies will notice what the city has to offer and bring additional professional jobs to the region. There will be impacts felt from this facility for years to come, and what exactly those will be are still to be determined.

FOR CREEKSIDE CONSTRUCTION IN COEUR D’ALENE, they recently completed a home that utilized its garage rooftop as a patio—something that is a perfect solution if you have limited yard space or live in the heart of the city yet love to relax outside during the warm weather months. Some of the best benefits of a rooftop patio include beautiful sunsets and privacy. Want even more privacy? White lattice planted with vines will add to a wonderful outdoor entertaining space! If you enjoy gardening, don’t let the idea of a rooftop patio discourage you. Decorate the area with containers and add plants, vegetables, and more to your outdoor space.
II.
CREEKSIDE CONSTRUCTION ALSO RECENTLY completed an interesting project, a “hangar home”—a home above an airplane hangar. For many private pilots this is a dream come true, allowing them to get up in the morning, have a cup of coffee and maybe take off to places far away for lunch or dinner before returning home for the evening. For many in North Idaho, this has become a very popular feature as we see more and more people calling this area their home away from home.

MATT KERR AND ERIC OWENS ARE PARTNERS at Sayler • Owens • Kerr Design Studio in Sandpoint and are involved in many unique projects. Living in North Idaho, much of their work also involves making the most of the natural beauty of the great outdoors and utilizing it both indoors and out.

hen it comes time to building a home, many are focused on countertops, flooring and other finishes that will bring to life their personality through the design of their home. But why not dare to be different? Adding some unique characteristics and features to your home, while they can be implemented later, are typically much easier (and less expensive) to do from the outset. Here are just a few of the things area builders and architects have done in recent years to add character to the homes they design and build.
In what they refer to as the Loon Lake Residence, they designed a bridge that spans from the parking area across a shallow, tree-filled ravine leading to the front door of the home. “The owners wanted it to feel light even though the span required steel,” said Matt. “We used an open grate for the floor of the bridge so as you walk across you can look down into the ravine and see the undergrowth. This inspired the owners to ask for an organic railing to complement the experience of being in the tree canopy.” Matt and Eric sketched out a four-foot section of overlapping branches and let the metal fabricator go from there. They then created the down-light handrail which not only illuminates the bridge but also the landscape below. IV.
ANOTHER HOME DESIGNED BY SAYLER • OWENS • KERR sits on the Pend Oreille River and has a unique design of a tree column in the interior. “The owners are huge Greene & Greene Brothers fans (influential early 20th century American architects) and modeled many elements of the house after the Greene Brothers’ Gamble House in Pasadena,” said Matt. “One of the elements of craftsman-style architecture is the relationship between nature and the built environment, and the owners wanted to bring something organic, some reference to its place on the land. We chose a tree to work with the rock chimney to anchor the living room on this rock cliff in a forest. Once we proposed a natural log column (also at the entry), the owners took that idea and ran with it, creating what looks like an existing tree that we built the house around.”

NORTH IDAHO HAS AMAZING PLACES THAT CAPTURE some of the most breathtaking views around. And who wouldn’t want to wake up each day to a view of the mountains and water? While it’s not affordable for everyone to live right on the shoreline, Bruce Wickboldt of Sandpoint Builders recently completed a screen room on Glu Lam stilts, giving the owners of the property breathtaking views of the mountains and water. “It’s like a tall forest lookout tower overlooking the Pend Oreille River,” said Bruce of the unique construction.

ASPEN HOMES DESIGN IDEAS DO NOT HAVE TO STOP AT THE FLOORING AND FIXTURES. A few years ago, Aspen Homes designed a home with a copper ceiling in the kitchen. “We really wanted to spice it up,” said Zetta Stam, who along with her husband Todd owns Aspen Homes in Coeur d’Alene. While it is not an inexpensive feature, Zetta shares that there are many ways to integrate this look that are more cost effective than utilizing true copper. With knock-off tiles that have the appearance of copper, many with different unique finishes, this can be a great option for people on a limited budget who would like to incorporate this into their home. FEELING A LITTLE RUSHED IN THE MORNING WHILE GETTING READY FOR WORK but still want to catch some of the morning news? By integrating a TV behind your mirror that is fully accessible with the remote, you can do both at the same time. This is becoming an increasingly popular feature and one that is relatively easy to achieve. The TV in this design by Aspen Homes is housed in the master closet adjacent to the master bathroom. Its components are hidden but easily accessed through a compartment in the closet. WHETHER IT IS THE OCEAN WAVES OR THE TRICKLING OF A WATERFALL, the sound of water can be soothing. While we all cannot have beachfront homes, we can bring the sound of water into our home through an interior water feature. This feature by Aspen Homes is one that many home owners have incorporated into their home not only for the soothing sound of the water but also as an artistic feature as well.
These features by Aspen Homes are just a few of many unique pieces. 48

Are you feeling inspired? BRANDON JOHNSON OF AFFORDABLE CUSTOM BUILDERS in Coeur d’Alene shares that his company’s most recent fresh ideas have come from Millennials wanting to show their love for man’s best friend. “We learned that 89 percent of those Millennials who bought a home this year owned a pet,” said Brandon. “So we decided to incorporate a couple pet-friendly ideas into their lives. We started with some pocket doors made for dogs but of course would work well for those with toddlers, too. Since adopting these concepts, most of our clients we share these ideas with add a similar feature to their custom home.”
AFFORDABLE CUSTOM BUILDERS ALSO HAD A REQUEST to incorporate a safe doggy door access. “We really liked this idea because it allows the pets to enter at their own will but prevents intruders from gaining access to your home without ending up in ‘the klink’ themselves,” said Brandon. “It’s essentially a kennel location under a utility room cabinet base. Very simple, yet functional, and looks great!”
ANOTHER INCREASINGLY POPULAR FEATURE in North Idaho is a request for hidden gun rooms or vaults. Brandon said they generally hide these rooms with bookshelves, and they require a fairly complex hinge mechanism and some serious structural reinforcement, but in the end it provides the homeowners peace of mind.

t’s amazing to find such a dynamic art culture in this small town in the Pacific Northwest, but Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, has it going on.
March. Also a free event, Downtown Coeur d'Alene rings with live musical performances from many of the area’s talented musicians!
The arts are essential to creating a healthy, vibrant and safe community. The role of the Arts & Culture Alliance is to foster creative outlets for artists, challenge convention and inspire new thinking. The Coeur d’Alene Arts & Culture Alliance leads the way with its support of the arts in all forms, including 23 regional arts organizations. With the many opportunities here, there is always something to do and never a dull moment.
Music for the Wise brings entertainment to those at various assisted living facilities and retirement residences who may not have the opportunity to enjoy live performances, particularly during the winter months. Local musicians and choral groups perform for the enjoyment of all who attend. It is amazing to see the positive effect of music on the elderly, particularly those with memory issues. Music has a powerful impact on the human psyche and memory retrieval.
The following are the events created by the Arts & Culture Alliance:
Kids Draw Architecture is held annually in the fall, with aspiring young artists and architects working directly with local experts. They learn to draw while at the same time discovering how our community’s architecture and art represents us as a culture. Thanks to a generous grant from the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, this year’s Kids Draw was held at the Cataldo Mission. This was not only a great opportunity for the drawing experience, but thanks to the Tribe’s historian, Raymond Brinkman, the kids learned about the historic significance of the site. Transportation was provided by the Coeur d’Alene Casino for a record 36 kids and 15 volunteers. Samples of the kids’ artwork will be produced as notecards for sale.
ArtWalk is a very popular event. From 5 to 8pm every second Friday April through December, hundreds of people stroll through downtown and enjoy local and nationally acclaimed artists. Supporting galleries, shops, restaurants and businesses provide a lively and free family friendly experience. While a great tourist draw, this is also a time for the local community to come together. Music Walk follows in the winter months from 5 to 8pm every second Friday in January, February and

The Riverstone Summer Concert Series has been growing each year in popularity. Held every Thursday in July and August in beautiful Riverstone Park, audiences can enjoy a free professional concert of a variety of genres from local and regional performers. What could be better than a beautiful summer evening in a lovely setting listening and dancing to great music? The Coeur d’Alene Artist Studio Tour is an opportunity for the general public to visit local artists’ open studios. Held in early June, the tour showcases the talents of many artists who may not be represented in local galleries, while providing a fun, engaging and interactive experience for those who are interested in witnessing the creative process. Held each year during October, Art from the Heart is a communitywide celebration of the arts held in honor of National Arts & Humanities month, bringing awareness to our community about the wonderful opportunities in the arts that are available. The Arts & Culture Alliance, with the help of local artists, puts on the Art in the Making event at the Coeur d’Alene Resort Plaza Shops—another great opportunity for the general public to experience art in action. And the annual Mayor’s Awards in the Arts is held at the Hagadone Event Center honoring those who have contributed to Coeur d’Alene’s art culture. Every first Friday of the month, the Arts & Culture Alliance hosts Arts Buzz, which provides a networking opportunity for nonprofit arts organizations, artists, performers and anyone interested in the arts. This is a valuable resource for our arts community, allowing us to share events and talents, give advice and seek collaboration opportunities. It continues to grow and draw current and new members excited to be a part of the art scene.

The annual fundraiser, Mardi Gras Krewe d’Alene, bridges the gap in the Arts & Culture Alliance’s funding, allowing for expansion in programming and increasing the quality of art experiences. The fourth annual Mardi Gras Krewe d’Alene will be held on Saturday, February 16, 2019, at the Coeur d’Alene Resort Plaza Shops on Sherman Avenue. With a New Orleans-style cook-off between local restaurants, attendees sample the best foods and vote on the People’s Choice Award, while a team of professional chefs choose the Chef ’s Award. Traditional street entertainment makes for a lively evening, followed this year by a full-on drag queen show. Why have so many art experiences and events? The arts have a positive economic impact on our community. With the help of the Americans for the Arts economic impact calculator, arts organizations can easily calculate their individual economic impact. The Arts & Culture Alliance generates just over $1 million in our local economy. With audiences spending an average of $31.47 per person per event, every dollar invested in the arts generates $12 back into the community. What a great investment. Visit AmericansForTheArts.org for more information on the positive impact the arts have on our economy. Consider supporting your local arts organization. The investment is worth it. Sandpoint’s music scene is exploding with local and regional talent
W
alking through the streets of Downtown Sandpoint on a weekend night, you may be surprised at what you hear coming from various establishments throughout the area. Music of all genres fill the streets from places such as The 219 Lounge, The Hive, Pend d’Oreille Winery, MickDuff ’s Beer Hall, Trinity at City Beach, Di Luna’s, The Back Door and more. And it’s not just your everyday wanna-be star who is performing; these are well-known musicians on a regional, and some national, level who delight the locals and tourists with their amazing talent. The 219 Lounge is a leader in the music scene here. While it has hosted music since it first opened 84 years ago, it was three years ago when it began to host bands on nearly every Friday and Saturday evening throughout the year to a packed house. A year ago, the “Niner” as it is known by locals, added Wind Down Wednesday, which features live music with locally and regionally acclaimed musician Truck Mills. “The addition of mid-week music along with half-priced bottles of wine and featured cocktails is a midweek draw during the early evening hours. We have a different guest musician playing with Truck every Wednesday, and this past summer we did a solo or duo music series every Thursday evening during July and August. Occasionally, we will book bands on other evenings during the year,” said Mel Dick, who along with his wife Claudia own the 219. At The 219 Lounge, they have hosted Karaoke every Tuesday evening from 9pm to midnight for nearly a decade. In fact, they were recently named as No. 1 out of the five top places in the country that you wouldn’t expect to find great karaoke. The other four locations were all in major cities in the U.S.

And it’s not just the local favorites such as Devon Wade, Bum Jungle, Miah Kohal, Bridges Home, Harold’s IGA, Bright Moments Jazz, Muffy and the Riff Hangers, Still Tipsy and the Hangovers and many other local favorite musicians and bands that draw crowds each week. This year The 219 hosted bands and singer/songwriters from all around the U.S. including Seattle, Missoula, Bozeman, Omaha, Los Angeles, Minnesota, New York, Texas, Portland, Southern Idaho and Maine, to name a few. “We have so much good music that runs the spectrum from rock ‘n roll, jazz, blues, Latin, Indie, ska, bluegrass/newgrass, Celtic, folk, Americana, funk, country and Southern rock,” said Mel. “Some are pure cover bands while others play only original music.” With such an eclectic schedule of musical entertainment, Mel said both their live music and popular comedy shows attract a wide spectrum of guests. “It is not uncommon to have a crowd of 21 to 60-plus years of age for just about any of our events,” he said. For more information on The 219’s lineup, go to their website 219.bar. On the same block as The 219 Lounge is The Hive, which for the past five years has also been host to a thriving music scene. Jeff Grady, a music enthusiast, purchased the Pastime building and began an extensive renovation before reopening in August of 2014. Since that time, The Hive has hosted many amazing musical events including what has now become the traditional “Aftival”—musical entertainment that takes place at The Hive following the concerts at the annual Festival at Sandpoint each August. With two full-service bars, four mezzanine-level VIP booths and state-ofthe-art sound and light systems, The Hive is host to the Annual Halloween Bash, a New Year’s Eve Ball and various concerts throughout the year.

It’s a venue that is unique, fun and worth the visit! Check out their website, LiveFromTheHive.com, for information and a calendar of their events. Along Cedar Street in Downtown Sandpoint, you will also find places such as Pend d’Oreille Winery, The Back Door and MickDuff ’s Beer Hall, all of which host musical entertainment on a regular basis. Pend d’Oreille Winery, located at the corner of Cedar Street and Third Avenue in the beautifully renovated Belwood Building, is host to live music during the winter months every Friday evening from 5 to 8pm. They also have live music during special events on Saturdays such as the 2nd Saturday Art Walk. “Our most popular local bands are Mike Wagoner and Sadie, Jake Robin, One Street Over and Brian Jacobs,” said Kylie Presta, who along with Jim Bopp owns Pend d’Oreille Winery. “Musical guests usually represent folk, pop, alternative and country styles.” Pend d’Oreille Winery also brings in musicians from out of town, such as Tom Catmull and Britchy from Missoula. And if you are looking for a beautiful place to relax on a Sunday, Pend d’Oreille Winery welcomes local and experienced pianists for Piano Sundays. “Piano Sundays are becoming our most attended events,” said Kylie. “Scott Kirby, Bob Beadling, Peter Lucht and Annie Welle are four of our most popular pianists.” Just down the street is The Back Door, which opened in the fall of 2017. Located next to Baxter’s on Cedar, The Back Door has hosted several musical guests on Friday and Saturday throughout the year. Its quaint setting is a great place to enjoy all genres of music including pop, rock, country folk and Americana.
Music makes the world go ‘round
Whether it is summer out on the lawn or inside on the dance floor, MickDuff ’s Beer Hall is a great place to enjoy music every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. They host many local favorites include Devon Wade, Brian Jacobs & Chris Lynch, and The Beat Diggers in addition to regional artists. Regardless, there is always a packed house with room to dance if you want to move to the music. Just across Fifth Avenue in the Granary District, you will find Matchwood Brewing Company, which opened in October 2018. Husband-and-wife owners Kennden Culp and Andrea Marcoccio, along with their entire crew, have a deep appreciation for talented artists bringing music and high quality performances for the community to experience together.

“We believe music can foster positive community change, prompt dialogue and increase laughter,” said Andrea. “It is our goal to provide artists with an authentic experience while making positive, face-toface connections with our guests and neighbors as well as honor and appreciate the time, commitment and creativity behind the art forms being performed.” From creating a warm and intimate setting to working with sound specialists, Andrea said that Matchwood Brewing will be an authentic place to perform, watch and listen. “In addition, while conducting our apprenticeship at Imagine Nation Brewing Company, we watched firsthand the power of diversity in music performance and seek to engage community members with unique musical and performance talents as much as possible,” she said. At Matchwood Brewing there will be both local and regional artists performing on weekdays, weekends and for specialty events, all in a family friendly environment. Andrea said they look forward to launching a summer series of outdoor concerts at the historic Molasses Tower stage with the grain elevator as a beautiful backdrop in 2019. Be sure and check them out at MatchwoodBrewing.com. After living in the Sandpoint area for a number of years, Mel shares that he is excited to see how the music scene is emerging not just at The 219 Lounge but many venues throughout town. “Sandpoint has developed a great music scene ranging from great singer/ songwriters and bands performing at local restaurants, bars, pubs and breweries to top-notch bands playing at Schweitzer during ski season and festivals and national acts playing the Festival and the Hive,” said Mel. “I believe The 219 and others have led a renaissance of the latenight scene in Sandpoint, and we are becoming a destination for great music on a year-round basis, not just during the annual Sandpoint Music Festival. We have some great local bands and musicians.” This is just a sampling of what one can experience when it comes to music in Sandpoint. There are many businesses that have done much to make Sandpoint a great music venue over the years including Di Luna’s, Trinity at City Beach, Eichardt’s, MickDuff ’s Beer Hall, Schweitzer Mountain, Arlo’s, Forty-One South, Pend d’Oreille Winery and The 219 Lounge, all of which have hosted local and regional musicians and bands for years. In addition, The Hive and the Festival at Sandpoint have put Sandpoint on the scene with the national acts they bring to town. And one can’t forget the great music that the Panida Theater hosts. Come and explore! It may be a small town, but the music culture is global.

Hello There We answer your most asked questions about Botox BY BRI WILLIAMS, RN, BSN, REFINED AESTHETICS MED SPA
recent study conducted by Allergan, the pharmaceutical company that produces Botox, found that 100 percent of women, aged 26 to 55, are aware of Botox Cosmetic. It’s pretty fascinating when you think about the fact that every single woman in that age group is aware of a single drug that is used to treat wrinkles. What many of the women in that same group did not know, however, is how the drug works, how much it costs, how long it lasts and what to expect during a Botox treatment. Many women, and men, are surprised to find how simple, quick and easy a Botox treatment is. Below we answer some of the most frequently asked questions. How exactly does Botox work? Botox works by blocking the synapse that sends the message from the nerve to the muscle to contract. Because that communication circuit has been broken, the injected muscle is not able to contract, which in turn causes the wrinkles to relax and soften. Over the next three to four months, new nerve connections are naturally created within the treatment area, and the muscle slowly gets movement back. Are Botox treatments painful? No. A very small needle is used to inject Botox. Many clients find the treatment to be very well tolerated and do not experience any discomfort. A typical treatment only takes a few minutes and involves superficial injections of the Botox into the desired treatment area. Numbing cream can be applied prior to your treatment if discomfort is a concern. How long does Botox last? Botox takes two to 14 days to become effective and lasts three to four months on average. Many clients find that with continued treatments they can go longer between appointments. 74

Is there any social downtime after Botox injections? No. Most clients leave the office with small bumps at the injection sites, and they go away in 10 to 15 minutes. It is possible that you could get a small bruise, but unlikely. Many clients do their treatment on their lunch break and return to work immediately. You need to avoid vigorous exercise the day of your treatment, and do not massage your face for eight to 12 hours after your treatment (use very gentle pressure while washing your face).
H
ow much does Botox cost?
The price of Botox varies from practice to practice. On average Botox is $11 per unit. The amount of Botox a person needs also varies from person to person. Generally, the area between the eyebrows (frown lines) requires 20 units, the forehead 10 to 12 units and the crow’s feet 12 units/side. Men typically need more Botox than women to have the same effect. Botox can also be used in other areas of the face. Consult with your aesthetic provider to discuss other common treatment areas. Is Botox safe? Botox Cosmetic received FDA approval in 2002 and is approved for use in over 75 countries. There have been more than 500 peer-reviewed articles in scientific and medical journals, and it is the most widely researched and studied treatment of its kind. There were over 7 million Botox Cosmetic treatments performed last year alone, and the medical community considers it to be low risk and safe. When done conservatively and dosed appropriately, Botox can help to soften wrinkles and prevent deep lines from forming, without making you look unnatural or frozen. Consult your aesthetic provider to discuss if Botox Cosmetic is right for you, and learn how you can look refreshed, youthful and rested.

FACIAL OILS
The original skincare
BY BRI WILLIAMS, RN, BSN, REFINED AESTHETICS MED SPA
hen it comes to choosing skincare products, it can be difficult to know which ones are right for you. There are thousands of products ranging from cleansers to eye serums, and knowing which products will work for you, your skin type and the issues you are trying to correct (acne, fine lines, large pores, etc.) can seem like a daunting task. Let’s get back to basics and discuss some of the first products that were used to cleanse and correct our skin woes. What are facial oils? Facial oils (often called beauty oils or serums) are a blend of beneficial plant oils that work to moisturize and deeply nourish the skin. Derived from plants rather than animal or petroleum products, their starring role in the beauty routine comes after cleanser and before creams/lotions. They work best to rejuvenate your complexion by NORTHWESTSIZZLE.COM

supplying nutrients to the skin in a form that penetrates deeply into the layers of your skin, giving you the most benefit. Unlike conventional moisturizers that combine water and wax, facial oil blends are typically 100-percent active ingredients and contain no fillers. Natural plant oils have been used as moisturizers and skin conditioners for thousands of years. The complex biology of plant compounds delivers vitamins, antioxidants and omega fatty acids, resulting in endless skin benefits. Scientists have tried extensively to replicate the beneficial plant compounds in labs but have not been able to reproduce them in their entirety. So, while many skincare products deliver amazing results, if you desire an all-natural skincare approach, consider the use of oils. Won’t facial oils cause breakouts and excessive oil? When you first hear about adding oil to your beauty routine, it is natural to be concerned about breakouts and excessive oiliness. The truth is that adding oils to your beauty routine helps to normalize your oil production. When we use products that strip our natural oils from our skin, our body produces more oil to prevent over drying. But when you use the right type and amount of oil, excess oil production can calm down. And, most natural plant oils are non-comedogenic, meaning they will not clog your pores.
Which facial oils are best for my skin type? Now that you know the many benefits of adding facial oils to your skincare routine, let’s talk about which oils are best for your skin type or concern. • Dry/Mature Skin - Jojoba seed and rosehip oils will help to fade discolorations and encourage cell regeneration while moisturizing. These oils are lightly scented, provide rich hydration and are absorbed quickly. • Combination Skin - Bergamot and marula oil help prevent skin damage and fight breakouts, while jasmine and lapis oils are great to boost emollient moisture and calm oil production in prone areas. • Sensitive Skin - Chia, shea and lavender oils have a calming effect and nourish sensitive, dry and irritable skin. They are rich in omega-3 fatty acids as well as powerful antioxidants and plant-based probiotics to nourish even the most sensitive skin. Mother Earth provides so many beautiful resources that have benefits beyond what can be created in a lab. They can be beneficial on their own or in conjunction with other skincare products. Take advantage of these natural resources and take your skincare routine back to the basics.

hen Zach and Hannah Vollmer were presented with the opportunity to purchase the Alpine Shop in Sandpoint, they knew they could not pass it up. For the previous two years, Zach had worked as general manager for both Alpine Shop locations, one in Downtown Sandpoint and the other in Schweitzer Village, and already knew the business thoroughly. And besides, working side by side was something the couple had long talked about. “We have always wanted to work together and own our own business,” says Hannah. “Owning and operating the Alpine Shop not only allows us to do this but also utilizes our strengths. Above all it allows us to be a part of the Sandpoint community, which we love.” The Alpine Shop has been a staple in Sandpoint for more than 50 years. As new owners, both Zach and Hannah are grateful to previous owners for building such a great foundation upon which they can continue to expand to serve locals and tourists alike. Since purchasing the business at the beginning of summer, Zach and Hannah already have regular customers from Sandpoint and beyond who they now call friends. With a mission to provide superior customer service, Zach and Hannah look forward to doing all they can to maximize their customers’ experience when it comes to both shopping and embarking on adventure. The couple has more than 20 years combined experience as sales reps, buyers and managers for various outdoor industry companies and also have a passion for outdoor adventure themselves. “Our professional experience and participation in outdoor recreation makes us a great resource for our customers,” says Zach. When you walk into both of the Alpine Shop locations, you will experience a welcoming atmosphere with staff that is eager to assist you with whatever you need. They provide boot fitting and ski tuning at both locations, so you can be ready for your day on the mountain. If you are looking to rent, they offer rental packages on skis, snowboards, cross-country skis and snow shoes. “We offer everything from basic to high-performance equipment for rent and for purchase,” says Zach of the products they carry, which include brands such as Salomon, Atomic, Nordica, Blizzard, Volkl and Rossignol. And with so many brands from which to choose, the Alpine Shop at Schweitzer provides a unique opportunity for customers to demo skis before purchasing them. “It provides our customers a chance to have the experience of trying them out before making the decision to purchase,” Zach says. At both locations, there is also much to choose from when it comes to clothing, jackets, ski gloves and more. Among the name brands they carry are Arc’teryx, Flylow, Hestra, Picture, Helly Hansen, Smartwool, Descente and Spyder. And if you think the Alpine Shop is all about winter adventure, think again! As soon as the snow is gone and the air begins to warm up, the shop turns over its inventory to a place where summer adventures await. With paddleboards, kayaks, water skis, wake surfers, tubes and more, you can have all you need for a day on the water. Stop by and visit and see all the Alpine Shop has to offer. I promise you won’t leave empty handed!

ith just about every variety of terrain no more than a couple hours away, the arc from Spokane to Sandpoint is among the finest places in the country for winter recreation. It’s so good, in fact, that expert climber Jess Roskelley wouldn’t live anywhere else. “The reason I have lived here my entire life is because it’s the center of a lot of areas to go climbing or skiing,” Roskelley said. And so much more. Options for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and other well-known recreations abound in the Inland Northwest. “Spokane: You can fly in from anywhere in the world,” said Alf Cromwell, Selkirk Powder’s director of marketing, “and within that day you can be skiing crazy cool stuff.” But if you’ve grown tired of that usual slate of options, consider the more extreme sports available to those who want to push their limits—at just about any altitude.
Heli-Skiing One of the most exclusive extreme sports opportunities in the region is to heli-ski your way through the Selkirk Mountains. A helicopter picks you up and your group basically can decide where you want to be dropped off. And then you ski. “Imagine you’re on a ski lift. You’re deposited at the top and have the choice of a few runs. Heli-skiing is like that but on steroids,” Cromwell said. “You go where you want to go. … You have this portable ski lift at your disposal to ski runs wherever you want that are appealing to your eye and ability level.” In short, you get exclusivity. Which comes at a price: $1,975 per person. “It’s that amazing, romantic adventure that’s irresistible,” Cromwell said, “and for those who are bold enough, they will be rewarded with world-class snow and ease of access.” Selkirk Powder runs excursions out of Sandpoint Airport from March 2 through April 14.
Ice Diving Not for the beginner, ice diving offers the chance to explore lakes at their most serene. Guides start by cutting a triangular hole in the ice and shoving the triangle down and under to form an opening. Then, divers take the plunge, tethered to a line at the surface. Guides mind the

line while the divers—including a safety guide—explore the underside of the ice. “It’s a bit thrilling,” said Phillip Graf, who has been leading such dives for almost two decades for Omni Divers in Oregon. “When you get underneath the ice you can look up and see the bubbles forming.” The sediment normally in the lake settles in the cold, still water, so you can see more clearly than on a hot summer day. You can also touch the bubbles and play with them, like the Mercury effect, Graf said. He’s even done some water skiing along the underside of the ice. Local outfitter Jake Powlison of Jake’s Diving—which, along with Atlantis Aquatics, offers dives in the Inland Northwest—cautioned that this is only for advanced divers.
“Spokane: You can fly in from anywhere in the world,” said Alf Cromwell, Selkirk Powder’s director of marketing, “and within that day you can be skiing crazy cool stuff.”

Terrain Parks Skiers and snowboarders looking for a place to hone their jumping and maneuvering skills can look to the area’s various terrain parks. Schweitzer Mountain Resort has three, of varying levels of difficulty, from beginner to expert. Skills developed in the terrain parks transfer well to other parts of the mountain, said Matt Conger, marketing coordinator at Schweitzer. “It’s a really good way to hone some skills for getting comfortable in the air on a man-made built feature with the proper takeoff and landing,” Conger said. “Then you can go, ‘OK, that cliff isn’t so scary.’” They also offer another way to enjoy the mountains when the powder isn’t fresh or the ski conditions aren’t ideal for the slopes, Conger said. “The terrain park is one of those things that’s always there.” Safety is paramount, he said, so those who want to enjoy the Stomping Grounds, Schweitzer’s largest park, are required to complete some basic safety and etiquette training.
Ice Climbing For those willing to go a little bit farther—or to pay close attention to conditions nearby—ice climbing in this region is some of the world’s best.

“We’re a really pretty day’s drive from the best place in the world to ice climb,” said Roskelley, who has climbed ice around the globe. “Ice climbing is basically when there’s either frozen waterfalls or snowmelt or the rain water table leaks through cliffs, and as soon as it ends up freezing up, guys like me decide to go hang out on it.” Much like any form of rock climbing, climbing ice takes proper equipment and training. But if people are willing to watch the ice at local places, such as Banks Lake near the Grand Coulee Dam, or are willing to drive six hours into Canada, the reward is worth it. If you’re new to climbing on any surface, Roskelley recommends learning at a gym and doing some rock climbing first, “and working your way up to using sharp metal objects” like ice picks. People can also look into ice climbing guides, classes and outfitters.
Motorized Snow Biking Take a dirt bike, remove its tires and add snowmobile treads. That’s how you end up with motorized snow biking, or Snow BikeCross, a recent addition to the X-Games as an official event. Timbersled, a company that began in Sandpoint and was bought by Polaris three years ago, is a pioneer in the industry. It sells various kits to convert motorbikes to snow bikes. Various dealers in the area are able to outfit those who are interested. As for where you can use them, the general rule is to follow regulations for snowmobiles. So, people should check with parks and other locations before riding. Whatever your adventure, enjoy the ride.

Northwest Dining Continues to Expand Diners’ options ARE NOW greater than ever
— BY COLIN ANDERSON —
T
hose living in the Northwest tend to take a more casual approach to life. This does not mean you’ll find lazy and uninspired chefs in the kitchen, in fact, it’s quite the opposite. Evidenced by the continued abundance of new restaurants, the regional dining scene is thriving, and diners are continually seeking out the freshest and most creative menus.
Sourcing locally is a priority for all of the top regional chefs. Seafood is purchased from trusted contacts along the coast and grains grown in the vast Palouse farmland are utilized in breads and pastries. Chefs focus on creating most of their dishes in house but also work with local bakers, butchers and farmers to ensure only the best and freshest ingredients make it to their guests. With dozens of wineries, breweries, distilleries and cider houses scattered across the region, chefs can also find wonderful pairings for the dishes and often collaborate on specialty sauces, menu items and beverage-pairing dinners. Ever-expanding Spokane, Washington, is the place to go for a big-city dining experience without losing that down-home feel. There are a few restaurants you’ll want to dress up for, but you can still find a wonderful meal in a casual atmosphere. No matter what area of town you are in, you’ll find unique food with exceptional taste and quality. The picturesque town of Sandpoint, Idaho, is home to a variety of restaurants that combine a pleasant dining atmosphere, many offering breathtaking views with local flair. You won’t have a difficult time finding something to please your palate with everything from Italian to sushi to exquisite cuts of meat. Coeur d’Alene, another North Idaho town offering impressive views of the lake and mountains, takes advantage of distinctive food options influenced by the region. Though the variety of cuisine is distinct, you’ll find that restaurants here offer menus that are Northwest inspired, incorporating as much local product as possible. For those blessed to call this area home, and for those who are just visiting for a while, the splendid scenery and generous hospitality, combined with one-of-a-kind dining experiences, is truly unmatched. Bon appétit!

QUALITY, PHILANTHROPY, LIFESTYLE PARTY ANIMAL VODKA LIVES UP TO ITS NAME
A
girl, a small Idaho town and potato vodka. That’s how the story begins. Fast forward to today, and Party Animal Vodka is taking Idaho by storm, one bottle at a time. Katherine Cullen is the woman behind Party Animal Vodka. Founded in 2017 and officially bottled in 2018, Katherine, along with fiancé and co-founder Joshua Hanson, launched the company right here in Idaho in April 2018 when bottles officially began hitting shelves. “I really wanted to drink a brand of vodka that had a story behind it that I could not only relate to but also stood for a just cause,” recalls Katherine. “I wanted a brand that related to me no matter if I was planning on staying in and having friends over or out at the bar taking shooters with all the other ‘party animals.’ Then it clicked. I began a quest to create a vodka that contained three simple factors: quality, philanthropy and a brand that relates to a live-in-the-moment lifestyle.” Today, more than ever, consumers care about the products they use and consume. Party Animal Vodka provides an extremely high-quality product at a reasonable price. “Our product also uses its name to relate to the consumer, as well as symbolize the philanthropy,” says Katherine. “The

Party Animal brand name and culture is synonymous with giving back to animals.” Traditionally, vodka was made from potatoes, but today, most are made from corn, grain or wheat. Party Animal Vodka is distilled in Idaho from locally sourced famous Idaho russet potatoes. “We like to say we are ‘getting back to the roots,’” smiles Katherine. There are no added sugars, preservatives or flavors in their product, and it is low calorie and low carbohydrates. She adds, “Our vodka is distilled once; done right the first time.” By sourcing and producing their product in Idaho, Party Animal Vodka is supporting the local economy, from the local potato farmer to creating jobs at the distillery and in the sales force. “Idaho potatoes and our Idaho distillery are what make our vodka so great, so why outsource?” says Katherine. “Keeping it local keeps the quality high and the revenue and jobs local. And last but not least, a portion of every bottle sold in Idaho gives back to Idaho wildlife conservation and local animal shelters.” In addition, the distillery is eco-friendly and utilizes wind power. They also recycle waste water and use their by-product for livestock feed.
When it comes to the success that Katherine and Joshua have found with Party Animal Vodka, they credit it to hard work, dedication and determination—and their customers. “Our market is flooded with various brands and options for consumers, however, being able to show people why our product is superior through sampling, communication and effective marketing has provided immense success.” Party Animal Vodka is starting to make an appearance in select restaurants throughout Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls, Hayden and Sandpoint including: Corner Bar, Capones Pub and Grill, The Moose, Rusty’s and Sandpoint’s historic 219 Lounge. If you are looking for a superior product Idaho grown, look no further than Party Animal Vodka.

FORTY-ONE SOUTH AND SHOGA SUSHI BAR OFFER FRESH, INNOVATIVE CUISINE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
While all this may lead one to think that an evening at FortyOne South is only for that romantic night out or certain special occasions, the truth is that it is a favorite of many families as well. With a children’s menu that will appeal to the younger members of the family, Forty-One South’s innovative cuisine offers both unique and traditional food choices including their popular Stone Harbor crab bisque, warm goat cheese appetizer, smoked filet mignon, wild sockeye salmon as well as pasta just to name a few. And for those who love to enjoy some comfort food on occasion, you cannot pass up the “Lakeshore” burger or the buffalo meatloaf. Their exquisite food preparation coupled with the ambiance of Forty-One South makes it an experience that has both locals and tourists returning again and again. They have a full bar as well as a bar menu for those wanting to stop in for a cocktail and appetizer or light meal. With a menu that changes with the seasons, Forty-One South is not only the perfect place to enjoy a memorable night out, but they also host many special events throughout the year. Their monthly wine dinners throughout the winter season are especially popular. Guests enjoy a five-course dinner accompanied by a hearty wine to complement each course. Featuring a different winery every month, the wine dinners are always a sellout, so reservations are required. If you are looking to host a celebration, Forty-One South also provides in-house and off-site catering for small and large groups including weddings, birthdays, business meetings and holiday parties. They also have a private dining room available. Cassandra Cayson has owned Forty-One South for just over eight years and has earned a reputation for providing not only excellent food and spirits but also exceptional service as well. With the success of Forty-One South, it was no surprise when Cassandra opened a second restaurant in 2012, Shoga Sushi Bar, right next door to Forty-One South. Offering customers an alternative option, the menu at Shoga offers a variety of nigiri, sashimi and specialty rolls as well as many Asian-inspired entrees such as the chicken teriyaki or beef and broccoli. Cassandra and her staff pride themselves on building relationships with the locals and tourists alike. The chefs use only the freshest ingredients and source them from as many local sustainable farms as possible. Both restaurants focus on accommodating each guest’s tastes and preferences above all. Hours do vary by season, so it is recommended to call ahead.

Hayden Lake’s GATHERING PLACE
The Porch Public House is worth the visit each and every time
O
pened in 2003 in Hayden Lake, Idaho, by John Grollmus and Brad Fosseen—the duo behind Moon Time in Coeur d’Alene—the Porch Public House offers diners exceptional food, brews, cocktails and service, all complemented by a beautiful golf-course view. It’s the perfect setting to dine and imbibe with friends, family or co-workers any time of year no matter what the occasion.
At The Porch, the values are consistent with those implemented at Moon Time. The owners and staff have a relationship built on mutual respect and friendship. “We value each employee personally, not just taking the time to say thanks every day, but also to know about their families, friends and significant others, and ask questions to know what is happening in their personal lives,” says John.
With Moon Time being a neighborhood favorite for Coeur d’Alene diners since 1996, John and Brad decided to bring a similar concept to the Hayden community. The Porch features many similar menu items to Moon Time, with some that are distinct to its locale. From the delicious sandwiches, salads and soups to scratch-made specials, you’ll be treated to great food at even better prices. In addition to the selection of great regional brews and wines, The Porch offers a full bar and the area’s finest cocktails to accompany your meal.
With all of the success these friends and business partners have secured in the restaurant business, Brad says what makes him truly proud is that guests keep coming back and have become friends, and he has a staff who sees to it.
Whether you choose to dine in the comfortable pub-style dining room or enjoy the view from their outdoor dining area, you’ll feel like you’re at home.
Every neighborhood should be so lucky, and thanks to John and Brad, Hayden Lake is one lucky place.

ou can’t help but notice all of the gastropubs and public houses that have been popping up all around North Idaho the past few years, yet, there is one that started it all back in 1996 right here in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. And it has stood the test of time. Any local will tell you Moon Time is a very casual, comfortable place to hang out. It’s like its own community. There are customers who have been going there for more than 20 years who are still seeing the same staff who has been working there nearly or just as long. Friends and owners John Grollmus and Brad Fosseen have seen to it, since day one, that Moon Time gives their guests consistency. Offering great food at a reasonable price, paired with excellent service and a familiar face, has always been their goal. Guests get what they have come to expect. The menu, from the start, has featured unique and upscale pub food bringing a variety of items from many different cultures together, paired with a carefully selected 19 beer handles and a wide variety of wines, which complement the food. John and Brad care about the success of their restaurants, but even more importantly, they care about their employees. They are not blind to the realities of life, and it is important to them to take care of those who work for them. That is just one reason they try to pay better than any other restaurant in the area. “I think it’s important that both Brad and myself spent our whole lives working in restaurants. That experience helps us to make the kinds of decisions which employees appreciate as they come from a perspective which understands the employee,” says John. When in Coeur d’Alene and looking for a great neighborhood pub, pull up a chair at Moon Time, where the staff is ready to serve you the best!

yringa Japanese Café and Sushi Bar has been satisfying locals since 2007, and since day one, owners Viljo and Autumn Basso have been serving guests the best sushi and modern Japanese cuisine North Idaho has to offer! High-quality, fresh ingredients and wonderful flavors are used in each dish they serve. With a flare for originality and excellence, this quaint little restaurant has set itself apart from the rest. “We feel so blessed to be a part of this amazing community,” says Autumn. “We are fortunate to have a crew that is passionate about great service and providing our customers with a quality product.” In 2016, the husband-and-wife team opened The Bluebird, a midtown eatery, which quickly gained a large following that continues to grow. Viljo and Autumn have delivered a casual neighborhood bistro-style restaurant offering a cozy rustic interior, with reclaimed warm rustic wood and metal, and vintage photographs decorating the walls. The Bluebird is an eclectic Northwest bistro—the menu inspired by the couple’s 20-plus years of culinary travels and adventures. Seasonal as much as possible, the menu items change frequently with specials offered weekly, allowing diners to try something new each time they visit. “We have a daily scallop special and the tater tot poutine (Cougar gold cheese sauce, pork belly and green onion),” says Autumn. “Our fried chicken (breast, thigh, leg and wing with honey miso glaze and pickle) is a must try. And you can’t pass up dessert. Kayla Carey, the manager of our White Pine Coffee Shoppe, makes the desserts for The Bluebird, and she just works magic.” To accompany the deliciously unique menu, The Bluebird has an outstanding wine list offering incredible selections from all over the world. In addition to the wine, they have a great variety of beer, ciders and sours. The Bluebird has found its home in Coeur d’Alene’s midtown, and the neighborhood couldn’t be happier. “Our goal was to open the kind of restaurant we like to dine at and bring more dining variety to Coeur d’Alene,” says Autumn. And guests continue to eat it up. When it comes to what makes both Syringa and The Bluebird distinct, Viljo says, “At each place, we’ve had the ability to create, in our small place, a friendly local neighborhood vibe. The food is unique, the customers are unique and the employees are unique.” More is on the horizon for Viljo and Autumn, as Syringa will make its new home in its bigger location just up the street at 1710 N. Fourth St., in the former Bistro On Spruce location. Set to open winter 2018/2019, Autumn says she loves the new restaurant space, and they plan to “Syringa-fy” it. “We hope the transition to the bigger place is fairly seamless for our customers,” she says. “We are still going to be a local neighborhood restaurant with the same friendly faces.”

For more than three decades, owners Bob and Kris McIlvenna have welcomed their guests into their warm and inviting inn offering seven suites, each with its own distinct look mixed with antique and replica furnishings. ’m most proud of opening our doors,” says Sarah Baker. “It took so much to get here.”
Growing up in Coeur d’Alene, Sarah got her first taste of the restaurant industry while in high school and quickly discovered her love for the service industry. In 2000, while in college, Sarah was hired as a busser at Europa, where she remained for eight years, working her way up to serving, bartending, managing and bookkeeping. She left Europa in 2008 to work at Cottage Café until 2015. “Between those two restaurants, I learned everything about the industry and what it takes to make it,” she says. After years of hard work and perseverance, it was time to fulfill her dream of opening her own restaurant. “You have to work insanely hard to get people to believe in you and your vision,” Sarah says. 2345 W. After renovating the old farmhouse in the serene setting of Stoddard Park, Sarah opened the doors to Chomper Café in April 2015. Once inside guests will experience an inviting atmosphere that is very unpretentious; a casual place that is comfortable and warm, with antique red chairs complemented by hand-
painted murals and old local farm photos adorning the walls. On the menu you’ll find favorites like the Reuben, unbelievably delicious and loaded with corned beef, sauerkraut, house Russian dressing, Swiss cheese and thick marbled rye. The corned beef is slow braised for 10 hours, incredibly tender and full of flavor. Enjoy it not only in the Reuben but hash and Irish benny as well. They’ll soon be adding smoked pork hash to the menu! The chicken fried steak is their pride and joy, with its hand-pounded steak, breaded, fried and smothered in their house sausage gravy. At Chomper Café, they only utilize the best ingredients to pour into every item they serve, from the rice bran oil and 100-percent fresh butter to homemade strawberry jam and fresh potatoes sliced in house. And for guests with food intolerances, they are happy to accommodate those needs including providing gluten-free buns and breads. Open daily 7am to 3pm, Sarah and her team are ready to bring high-quality, delicious fare to the table paired with a memorable experience.

TWO AMAZING RESTAURANTS One Owner

NO POLITICS HERE … JUST GREAT FOOD!

THE WHITE HOUSE GRILL
and ever-changing fresh fish selection, there’s something to appeal to any taste, and guests keep coming back for more. The menu stays consistent throughout the year so guests know that the next time they return they will always find the same great food. Don’t be surprised though—you may just find a few new items on the menu.
For more than two decades, Raci Erdem, chef and owner, has been bringing the flavors of the Mediterranean—and its garlicky goodness—to eager diners, and guests continue to eat it up! Serving the Post Falls community for 22 years, The White House Grill offers a comfortable and relaxed family friendly environment, where patrons of all ages are invited to take a seat at this fun and loud—but by no means obnoxious—restaurant. Mediterranean music fills the air, as does the aroma of garlic. Seafood, vegetables, pasta and lamb dishes fill the menu, complemented by a full bar featuring handcrafted cocktails, 12 beers on tap, an
extensive wine list and a beautiful scotch list— hand selected by Raci himself. Raci looks forward to guests coming into the restaurant, not just for the food and drink, but to enjoy the overall experience The White House has to offer. “Our job is to put you in a great mood with some cool music, delicious food and awesome drinks, all for a great value that you won’t find at any chain restaurant,” he says. Since day one, The White House Grill has offered the same freshness, quality of food, fun environment and good prices. And every year since first opening, the seats continue to be filled. Join them for lunch and dinner daily starting at 11am and open late.
THE OVAL OFFICE With the success of The White House Grill, Raci decided it was time to open a second restaurant, and The Oval Office was born in 2006. Here, the cozy, romantic bistro-style eatery is loud and busy, bustling like a big-city restaurant with an upscale appeal. Patrons can appreciate flavors from around the world with the small plate and entrée offerings. Start your night off right with the baked brie in filo with spicy basil honey; the Mediterranean-style clams are a must! Combined with the great steaks, seafood 118

When it comes to libations, guests will be treated to a full bar featuring great beer, wine and specialty cocktails. Unlike other martini lists, it features politically inspired specialty martinis, from The President to The Impeachment. There’s something on the menu for anyone looking for a good martini—and a good time! The Oval Office is known for its happiest of happy hours in the Northwest, offered twice daily. With all martinis and appetizers offered at a fraction of the price, it’s the best time to head over to The Oval Office. The community fireplace on the large outside patio can seat 12 around it, where guests have the option to dine and imbibe outside. The European-style awning allows patio dining year round! Open Monday through Friday 11am to 11pm and Saturday and Sunday 3 to 11pm, it’s the perfect spot for late-night dining. This American bistro with a foreigner chef touch is reason alone to take a drive to Post Falls and make a visit to The Oval Office. Martini anyone?

SER VING SP O KA NE
FOR MORE THAN FOUR DECADES
— BY JILLIAN CHANDLER —
SPOKANE’S LANDMARK RESTAURANTS CONTINUE TO SATISFY CUSTOMERS.
O
ver the past four decades, Spokane has welcomed, and said its goodbyes, to dozens, if not hundreds, of restaurants. But during that time, there has been one locally owned, longstanding restaurant group that has stood the test of time—Spokane’s Landmark Restaurant Group. The company behind the Onion Taphouse and Grills and Frank’s Diners has been catering to locals and visitors alike since 1978, and they’re stronger and more successful than ever. Founded by Larry Brown, the downtown Onion Tavern made its debut in 1975. Three years later, Larry got a large loan from US Bank and did a beautiful remodel of the space. “That is when the official Onion Bar & Grill everyone knows today was born,” says Ken Belisle, president and managing partner of Landmark Restaurants. In 2018, The Onion Taphouse & Grill’s 40th anniversary in business was marked, but the original 1975 Onion menu still hangs in the restaurant today as a reminder of its humble tavern roots. With the success of The Onion downtown, it was time to add to their restaurant family. Built in 1982, the North Side’s Onion Taphouse and Grill has been a north side hangout for large parties and family gatherings for 36 years. In 2015, the new Area 51 Taphouse in the lounge became an instant north side favorite.

Less than a decade later, it was time for a new venture! In 1991, Downtown Spokane was treated to its third Landmark Restaurant—Frank’s Diner. “A lost ground lease in Seattle was Spokane’s gain, and Frank’s Diner railcar was introduced to Downtown Spokane in the fall of 1991,” says Ken. “This original, beautiful 1906 railcar in which Franks’ Diner is housed was actually the private railcar for the president and is as beautiful today as when it was first built.” In January 2004, a second Frank’s Diner began its restoration journey. “We finally found a transport route to bring our dilapidated 1916, 100-ton, 83-foot railcar over from the coast,” says Ken. “It then spent the next year in a hanger off Argonne as we began the slow, painful restoration process. In 2005, after $1 million and thousands of man hours, she was finally ready to make her debut and move to her new home in North Spokane. With the help of two huge 100-ton cranes and a massive semi haul with police escort, our beautifully restored 1916 presidential railcar was moved to its final home, and the second Frank’s Diner opened in the summer of 2005 on Newport Highway.” Forty years and four successful restaurants certainly seems like they have created a recipe to success. “We recognize the enormous obligation to keep finding ways to exceed our guests’ expectations,” says Ken. “We know that to exceed our guests’ expectations means
we must exceed our crews’ expectations first. My No. 1 goal is to be Spokane’s employer of choice. Only then can we truly wow our guests.” He adds, “Our guests’ desire for locally sourced scratch-made food and craft beverage, prepared fresh when they order by people who love what they are doing, is our passion. We won’t rest until we’ve exceeded our crewmembers’ and every guest’s expectation.” Ken and his team know time is valuable, so when their guests can join them for a meal, they are dedicated to creating an experience that is truly wonderful for each and every guest—every time. Serving Spokane the best for more than 40 years, take a seat at The Onion or Frank’s Diner, where Ken and his crew bring passion and experience to the table.

CENTURY-OLD STEAM PLANT REVOLUTIONIZING YOUR DINING EXPERIENCE
N
owhere else in the region—and rare in the U.S.—is there a facility that so artfully exposes the inner workings of an industrial plant while providing an experience that is truly unmatched in its vitality and energy. Spokane’s Steam Plant is both historic and contemporary; a visual icon that typically results in a oneword reaction from visitors: “Wow.” Using materials that provide warmth to the expansive four-story space, the interiors are the perfect blend of industrial and contemporary. The main-level restaurant, Steam Plant Kitchen + Brewery, is an open design overlooking the bar area and features comfortable, tufted seating in the built-in booths next to steel-cladded walls. The bar offers a mixture of large community tables as well as both semi-private and private booth seating. For visual interest, large murals showcase the plant’s historic roots, while patterns of steam pipe lines snake through the ceiling, providing a creative way to hang lighting that washes beams and columns. The plant’s boilers are brought into the forefront with a fresh coat of paint and a splash of color. Diners can now enjoy the spacious atmosphere in the light of day, as lunch service is back. the Rooftop Event Space is available for a wide range of events from Beer & Yoga Nights to wedding receptions to corporate retreats. The space can accommodate up to 150 people, includes a ready room and a patio, and offers a unique view of the plant’s smokestacks and the Spokane skyline. “What I’m most excited about,” says Jeff Cooney, Steam Plant general manager, “is not only the amazing space this renovation has created but also the energy of our staff. They come to work every day ready to deliver hospitality in a way Spokane hasn’t seen before. They’re genuinely committed to earning that ‘Wow’ reaction from every one of our guests.” Jeff has more than 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry. After graduating from culinary school in Scottsdale, Arizona, Jeff moved to Spokane and has been managing restaurants throughout the Northwest for the last 10 years. The enlarged kitchen includes a wood-fired pizza oven, rotisserie, char-broiler and smoker. The menu focuses on handcrafted, authentic foods. Specialties include a “woodkissed Caesar” with grilled romaine, a rotisserie chicken and a turkey sandwich that is claimed to be “World’s Best,” along with generouspour signature cocktails and a regional wine list.
“There’s something special happening here at the Steam Plant,” says Executive Chef Paul Taylor. “During my almost 30 years in the industry, I’ve been a part of some truly great kitchens, but nothing is quite as unique as this space.” Paul, who trained at Northwest Culinary Institute, has worked at several restaurants in Oregon and Washington, including Hall Street Grill in the Portland area and with Bon Appetit and their “farm to fork” program at Evergreen State College. Meanwhile, Head Brewer Ben Quick continues to create craft brews on site, offering a variety of permanent taps and inventive seasonals created by beer lovers for beer lovers! The Steam Plant is constantly finding new ways to use these delicious brews in the kitchen’s recipes for a twist on traditional favorites. New space, new menu items and a rotating selection of handcrafted brews: The Steam Plant’s transformation will definitely keep you coming back for more.

FIrING things up!
T
he scratch food, exceptional service and extensive offerings of beer, wine and spirits are better than they’ve ever been at The Blackbird Tavern + Kitchen.
For the past three years, residents and visitors alike have had the privilege to dine and imbibe at The Blackbird on the restored first floor of the historic Broadview Dairy building, adjacent to the Spokane River, in Downtown Spokane. Opened by owners Patrick McPherson and Denise Hanson in the summer of 2015, this 4 Star Certified Green Restaurant has been attracting friends, family and travelers to gather for the fresh, locally minded food and fun. In 2018, The Blackbird has reinvented their atmosphere and cuisine to offer Spokane a truly traditional taste of the South. The new menu offers traditional Southern smokehouse barbecue (including brisket, pork, jackfruit, hot links, spare ribs, chicken and more), and woodfired smokers start smoking at midnight each day. Serving up traditional Southern barbeque with a few twists, The Blackbird has the freshest woodfired fare in Spokane. Their newly crafted cocktails are prepared to pair with the smoky plates, adding to their already comprehensive spread of beers (33 on tap), kombucha on tap, wines (four on tap) and spirits. Guests will enjoy the wood-fired Southern cuisine and libations in this casual, fun restaurant. The new restaurant concept has been a learning curve for both the Blackbird staff and their customers. “Spokane isn’t accustomed to barbecue like other parts of the country. Many people are also used to sauce-slathered meats at barbecue restaurants around here,” says Patrick. “Putting sauce on your meats allows you to hide inferior products such as poorly smoked, dry or meats from the previous day.” At The Blackbird, meats are made daily, and when they run out, they’re out. Patrick believes strongly that a barbecue joint should only make what they believe they can sell that day. The menu is smokin’ at The Blackbird, from their specialty sandwiches and tacos (choose from brisket, hot links, pulled jackfruit, pulled pork and chicken) to the brisket chili, filthy fries (pulled pork, smoked cheddar, cheese sauce and roasted garlic), smoked and fried wings and corn dogs (housebattered chorizo sausage, smoked paprika ketchup and honey). Patrick, who is a certified cicerone and publican, is in charge of the cellar as well as writing the beer menus at The Blackbird. Beers are cellared on site as well as an off-site temperature-controlled cellar. “Our knowledgeable staff and our beer selection certainly sets The Blackbird apart. We require all of our servers and bartenders to be Cicerone ®Certified Beer Servers,” says Patrick. The Blackbird is also proud of their cocktail program. “We make a bunch of in-house infusions, which allows us to make our own unique cocktails such as our mezcal old fashioned,” says Patrick. that won’t soon be forgotten. This is what The Elk Public House has delivered year after year to their guests since opening its doors in 1999. Take a seat in the comfortable and inviting welcome-to-my-house environment, which is laid back, not pretentious. Here you will be treated like family, whether you’re an out-oftown guest dining in for the first time or one of their loyal customers of nearly two decades. Owned by John Grollmus and Brad Fosseen, their employees most certainly care about the restaurant and their guests as is reflected by the many longtime staff members it employs. From ownership down through management and staff, when you walk into The Elk, it feels like family. And they treat their guests as such. Now let’s talk food. In addition to the traditional Reuben, thanks to the Food
Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives show, which featured the Elk back in 2010, the Santa Fe chicken sandwich, Mediterranean grilled lamb sandwich and legendary roasted corn pasta are favorites. They also offer creative weekly specials and homemade soups, inventive cocktails and great brews. John and Brad are also the duo behind Two Seven Public House, El Que and Geno’s Traditional Food and Ales in Spokane, Moon Time in Coeur d’Alene and The Porch Public House in Hayden. Their common philosophy at each location is to make food from scratch, price it affordably and serve it with a smile. Every neighborhood should be so lucky.

Continuing the Tradition of

Geno’s celebrated its five-year anniversary this past October, and it’s no surprise that it continues to be a local favorite as it carries on John and Brad’s long tradition of good food and friendly service where guests are welcomed by a casual feels-like-home atmosphere.

t’s been five years since Geno’s changed ownership and ended up in the hands of local friends and business partners John Grollmus and Brad Fosseen. The two are the ones behind several area favorite restaurants including The Elk, El Que and Two Seven in Spokane, and Moon Time and The Porch in North Idaho. With the success its sister restaurants have seen over the years, Geno’s Traditional Food and Ales has established itself as another neighborhood gem the community has embraced. Geno’s celebrated its five-year anniversary this past October, and it’s no surprise that it continues to be a local favorite as it carries on John and Brad’s long tradition of good food and friendly service where guests are welcomed by a casual feels-like-home atmosphere. The menu includes some of the same favorites known in their other pubs, like The Elk’s famous Reuben sandwich (guests have the choice of a gluten-free bun for all sandwiches) and Moon Time’s 74th St. gumbo, but the menu is adorned with items that are unique to Geno’s, such as the Cuban pork sandwich and Geno’s chicken

wings with your choice of three sauces. For a twist on this menu, Geno’s has french fries—which none of the other restaurant locations have—in addition to the ever-popular, and addicting, roasted corn pasta. The food is complemented by a great tap selection and cocktails. Staying in tradition with the other pubs, Geno’s menu appeals to the masses not only in taste but in price. No one leaves Geno’s hungry—or broke. And It’s a perfect place to unwind and support the Gonzaga Bulldogs, with plenty of TVs to watch the games. The kitchen stays open late, so it’s a great spot to meet up after the game, or for that matter, any event taking place at the Spokane Arena, thanks to its close proximity. Great brews and cocktails, and of course, the tasty food and good company makes this a destination you will want to return again and again.

A FAMILY
Affair
— BY JILLIAN CHANDLER —
E
POURING AWARD-WINNING EXCELLENCE INTO EACH GLASS
stablished in 1982 by husband and wife Mike and Ellena Conway, Latah Creek Wine Cellars in Spokane Valley continues to bring affordable, award-winning wines to the Inland Northwest. Thirty-seven harvests and 36 years later, they, along with their winemaker daughter Natalie Barnes, continue that mission. At Latah Creek, they never compromise their standards while continuing to produce remarkable wines. For more than three decades, it has been important to the family to keep their bottle prices low, and they have stayed true to their objective. “We could very easily raise our prices $5 to $15 per wine, but we choose not to,” Natalie says. “We choose to keep our wines inexpensively priced so that everyone can enjoy award-winning wines every day—not just on special occasions.” In addition to Latah Creek’s more than 15 wines varying from red to white, dry to sweet, light to full bodied and reserve reds, their gift shop is filled with gourmet foods and unique items hand selected by Ellena. From Nora Fleming Ceramic-ware that can be customized for any occasion or time of year and beautiful holiday décor to authentic Italian pastas and a variety of gluten-free foods and mixes, it’s the perfect place to shop for friends and family—and yourself! “We also have a cookbook featuring over 250 of my mom’s recipes, each with a wine pairing suggestion,” says Natalie. “Each month, we select one wine to be our featured Wine of the Month, and we choose three recipes to pair with this wine, sharing the information to our customers via email.”
142
SIZZLE
Natalie attributes Latah Creek Wine Cellar’s long-standing success to her parents. “My mom is continually looking for unique items for the gift shop that would add to anyone’s experience as well as new recipes, while my dad continues to strive to make great wine,” she says. “Together they started this winery, and together they have brought it here to our 37th harvest.” Natalie joined her father in winemaking in 2004, and today it is still just the two of them who handle the wines at Latah Creek. When it comes to what Natalie finds most rewarding about being in the winemaking business, she says, “I love to see a person’s face light up when they try a wine and fall in love with it. I just want a person to find a wine that they love, not something I think they should love.” Over the course of the next few years, they are hoping to remodel and update their tasting room and parts of the winery to welcome their guests. And, as always, they will continue to make award-winning wines while looking for unique varietals to produce and get out to their loyal, wine-loving community. “I love being part of a longstanding family winery,” smiles Natalie. “I am deeply honored that I get to carry on my parents’ legacy and hope that one or both of my daughters would choose to continue in the legacy of making wines at Latah Creek.” Raise a glass to Mike, Ellena and Natalie and toast to another 36 years of award-winning winemaking.

gathering place for locals and tourists alike, Pend d’Oreille Winery is the perfect place to enjoy fine wine and create special memories.
The unique Downtown Sandpoint winery is owned by Jim Bopp and Kylie Presta, both of whom have several years of experience in the winemaking business. “I’m an artist, and you have to be to do what I do,” says Jim. Kylie started out as a chemist analyzing the wine and quickly became involved in the winemaking process. Consistency and quality are two of the many reasons Pend d’Oreille Winery has received countless awards and the respect of many wine drinkers over the past two decades. The refillable wine bottles remain popular, with approximately 600 refilled on a monthly basis.
And while they have customers throughout the country to whom they ship, they are grateful to those in their hometown who support them on a regular basis. The music provided at the winery on Fridays and an occasional Saturday draws performers from all over the Northwest including Seattle and Missoula, as well as many local performing artists. The winery is also host to Trivia Night the last Thursday of the month beginning at 5:30pm. They also offer monthly Paint ‘n Sip classes and host a Second Saturday Artist Feature that features a different local artist each month.

Jim and Kylie express deep gratitude to their families as well as the customers who have supported them in this venture. “It’s very humbling to see people returning again and again,” says Jim. “It’s a gift to not only be able to own and operate this winery but to be able to live in Sandpoint as well.”
In addition to the opportunity to taste a variety of incredible wine, the Tasting Room has small bites available including a charcuterie board. And for those who prefer, there is locally crafted beer available. NORTHWESTSIZZLE.COM

Dry Fly Distilling continues to create excellence in each bottle
— BY JILLIAN CHANDLER — 146
SIZZLE
I
t was 11 years ago that Dry Fly Distilling introduced itself to Spokane and not before long, the world. And the inspiration began with a fishing trip.
While Don Poffenroth was entertaining clients on the Gallatin River in Montana, the group drinking high-end vodka, he began to contemplate whether the glass in hand was truly the best vodka the world had to offer. His response: No. It was at that moment that the inspiration behind Dry Fly Distilling was born. “The name Dry Fly not only recalled the original inspiration but also captured the beauty of the Northwest and the qualities that fly fishing requires—patience, persistence, presentation and perfection; the same qualities required to produce and market fine spirits,” says co-owner Terry Nichols. At that time, there was no craft distillers license in Washington state, so Don, with local senator Chris Marr, drafted a piece of legislation that would allow for the creation of a craft distillers license, as long as the producer used a high percentage of Washington-grown ingredients in the manufacturing process. Today, owners Don, Terry, Ralph Quinsey and Patrick Donovan continue to utilize 99 percent Washington-grown ingredients—from family owned farms within approximately 30 miles of the distillery—for their products. Dry Fly was the first distillery in Washington state and among the first 25 in the country! At its inception, Dry Fly Distilling produced two products—their superb high-quality vodka (of course!) and gin. More than a decade later, the distillery produces a wide range of spirits, vodka, gin and a line of whiskies that are amongst the best in the world and distributed throughout the world. At the 2018 Whiskies of the World event, Dry Fly Distilling was a three-time gold recipient and a silver recipient. “We are currently in the planning stages for an expansion of our capacity to support growth in both our domestic and international markets,” says Terry. “We see a continual increase in whiskey quality as our barrel inventories gracefully age in the warehouse—6-year-old wheat whiskey tasted from the barrel is nothing short of epic! We would ultimately like to be recognized as one of the highest quality whiskey producers in the world.” Thanks to the addition of the Dry Fly Tasting Room in 2017, the visitor experience has been greatly enhanced. Serving some of the finest craft cocktails in the region and offering retail bottle sales, the Tasting Room’s inviting space is also ideal for meetings and parties. If you are looking for a location to host your private event, the Tasting Room is available for nonprofit functions, company meetings, birthday parties, bridal and baby showers, anniversary celebrations and more. When it comes to what Don, Terry, Ralph and Patrick are most proud of when it comes to Dry Fly, it is the high-quality products they continue to produce all while supporting local farmers and connecting with their employees, community, customers and fans, and the nonprofit community. Terry credits the above, in addition to the foresight of founder Don and their distributers and retail partners, for Dry Fly’s continued success over the years. Patience, persistence, presentation and perfection. With the uncompromising commitment to quality and values, taste and discover excellence embodied in each bottle.

THE LOBBY BAR
10 Great Spots Locals Shouldn’t Miss By Colin Anderson
L
obby bars and hotel restaurants can sometimes get a bad rap. Plain décor, an uninspiring menu and low energy can lead to an experience that is forgotten not soon after the bill is paid. With so many dining and drinking locales across the Inland Northwest, heading out to one of the local hotels for an evening meal or cocktail might not be the first thought for most, however, you are missing out on some of the best places around. Here are our 10 favorite spots visitors will be surprised by and locals shouldn’t miss. The Lounge at Masselow’s Northern Quest Resort & Casino, Airway Heights, Washington There are numerous places to get a drink or a bite to eat inside Northern Quest, but for some of the best food on property as well as a more relaxed environment, look to this upscale bar located between the hotel front desk and the famous steakhouse. Masselow’s full menu is available here, but there is also a loungespecific menu featuring shared plates and a few entrees. Seasonal and fresh-pressed cocktails are highlighted, and there is an extensive craft beer, wine and spirits menu. Happy hour runs 4 to 6pm and includes $1 off wells, domestics and house wines and 20-percent off appetizers. MAX at Mirabeau Mirabeau Park Hotel, Spokane Valley, Washington Daily breakfast, weekend brunch, lunch, dinner and late-night entertainment; there is always food and fun available at this Spokane Valley favorite. The large restaurant and bar area offer comfortable seating for dining and cushy chairs and couches for sipping cocktails. Live bands and dance music entertains guests and visitors on weekend nights, and a diverse and award-winning menu offers something for everyone. The reservation staff can book business or social gatherings with private dining options and can accommodate events of up to 600 guests. Trinity at City Beach Best Western Edgewater Resort, Sandpoint, Idaho Casual fine dining and spectacular views of Lake Pend Oreille make Trinity a must visit when in Sandpoint. The patio is packed on perfect summer evenings, but even in winter the views are spectacular as you look through large windows that let in plenty of natural light. Upscale enough for an anniversary dinner but casual enough for a drink with friends after work, Trinity strikes a fine balance. Happy hour includes $1 off draft beer and well drinks daily from 4 to 6pm.

T
There is a lot to be thankful for living in the Northwest, but the truth is during the winter months we may long for some sunshine and warmer weather. When the days are short, the temperatures are chilly and gray drizzle makes things just wet enough to mess up your day, we remember the wonderful islands of Hawaii where it’s almost always 80 degrees and sunny. As a couple that has a serious travel bug, it’s rare we visit the same place twice. But after our first trip to the island of Kauai, we were back again this past May, less than two years later. There are slices of paradise on each of the Hawaiian Islands, but for those looking to step out from behind the all-inclusives, dinner shows and crowded Waikiki and add some adventure to your vacation, the North Shore of Kauai simply can’t be beat. In and around Hanalei Bay you will find some of the most spectacular beaches and scenery in the world. You can surf, snorkel, scuba, hike, bike and fly. This truly is a remarkable island, and your visit will bring you a new-found appreciation for nature. His Perspective As a traveler, I like to see and experience as much of an area as I can because who knows if I’ll ever be back again. Relaxing on the beach is always part of the trip, but I can only lounge for so long before wanting to find the next experience. This might be my favorite thing about Kauai. You can drive up and down the North Shore, find plenty of places to explore, and if you feel like a little beach time, just pull over and plop down your chair and towel.

HAWAIIAN BEACH AT YOUR DOORSTEP.
Kauai is known for adventure both by sea and land. One of my favorite excursions we’ve taken is something you wouldn’t likely come across at the concierge desk. Our group of four hired a local by the name of “T” to take us into the center of the island and float down a century-old irrigation canal originally created to bring water from the mountains to the taro fields and pineapple plantations in the valleys below. The drive was on one of the roughest and craziest roads I have ever been on with washed-out sections the size of a Mini Cooper. We passed through the area where they shot the entrance to Jurassic Park, and we were soon riding boogie boards down a 2-mile canal. We passed through several pitch-black tunnels and ended at a beautiful swimming hole. Another great land adventure is hiking the first 2 miles of the Kalalau trail. This trail begins where the road literally dead ends. It’s an 11-mile hike that wraps around the famous Na Pali Coast, which you can also tour by sail boat, zodiac, kayak or helicopter. This hike is rated a difficulty 9.5 out of 10 by the Sierra Club, but the first 2 miles are doable if you are in decent shape and have hiking experience. Permits are needed to go further than 2 miles, but thousands of people make the 11-mile trek each year to camp out at Kalalau Beach—one of the most beautiful beaches and backdrops you will ever see. The trail is steep and rocky, and you traverse streams that can swell at a moment’s notice. Both times we’ve done this hike it has down poured for a short time making for an even wilder experience. Back in the water, you’ll find a colorful array of fish snorkeling at Ke’e beach, excellent surf and boogie boarding waves in the picture-perfect 2-mile crest beach of Hanalei Bay, and will more than likely come across giant sea turtles snorkeling at Anini Beach. Having such an immense turtle swimming just feet away from you is really an amazing experience.

Like other vacation destinations, there are plenty of restaurants from grab-and-go to upscale fine dining, and shops carrying trinket souvenirs to fine art. You’ll notice that only a couple bars stay open past dinner, but after a day of exploring and sunny beaches, most retire early instead of seeking out the nightlife. If you get the chance to visit this island, enjoy the beaches, but don’t be afraid to step out and find your own adventure. Her Perspective When my husband and I settled on a vacation to the island of Kauai and began to talk to friends and colleagues about our trip, one of the most common things we heard from other visitors of the island was, “Kauai is incredible.” After having visited the island twice, I agree. The Hawaiian island of Kauai is one of the most beautiful places on earth. The island has natural presence that truly must be seen to be believed. Kauai served as the backdrop to many famous movies (Jurassic Park and Blue Hawaii for example), so you likely have seen this spectacular place before without even realizing it. If you are in search of tropical paradise that comes complete with stunning high lush green mountain peaks that seem to always be draped in a shroud of mist and that are contrasted against a coastline of white sand beaches and rolling turquoise blue ocean waves, look no further than Kauai. The “Garden Island” is the perfect backdrop for burying your toes in the sand and your nose in a book while the ocean crashes to the shore. You can boogie board, surf and drink beer from your cooler while you get far too much sun and apply too little sunblock. You will probably have more

than one encounter with some of the most colorful chickens you have ever seen, as they inhabit the island and seem to be its most numerous residents. These free-range creatures will probably be your morning alarm clock, too. They seem to be lurking everywhere, including outside your window. Impressive sunrises on the island make for a perfect excuse for getting up early for a run, taking a yoga class on the beach or walking down to the nearby beach to stand in the ocean and watch the sun come up for the day. Opting for a vacation rental by owner over a hotel will usually include the perks of having a little more privacy, a lot more space and typically a cache of beach gear to let you create your own experience. Plus, if you have a kitchen, it can easily be stocked. The island boasts multiple farmers markets, with one happening most nights of the week. The markets are a
great chance to be amazed at how much better things grow in the tropical climate (hello giant onions!) and to find and try fruit not typically found at your regular Pacific Northwest farmers market (hello papayas!). Creating your adventure not your style? There are also tons of resources and companies that will ensure your vacation has just the right amount of zip-lining, surfing, fishing, snorkeling or whatever you enjoy. If you are looking to have rocking party where you stay up late and hop from club to club, this is not the place for you. And no one is going to walk up to you and try to sell you some trinket you don’t need. Kauai’s charms are much more natural and serene—and when you leave you’ll find yourself planning the next trip before you get home.
