LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Hi all welcome to the second issue of Lilac - firstly thank you everyone that made it down to Brew Dog for the launch of the magazine, it was amazing and we are totally overwhelmed at the love you’ve shown for Lilac.... So this issue is focusing on art, but what 1s art!? is it just drawing, painting or is it more than this? We open our eyes to various types including photography, design and comedy. I stepped way out of my comfort zone this issue especially on our beauty story, shot by the amazing Layla Sailor. Pushing my visual boundaries and styling this is one shoot I’ll not forget, it’s bright, bold and just a little bit crazy. But this is art right?! So here is issue two, enjoy!! with love Nicki EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Lilac Launch
Love Fashion
Giles Deacon
We were completely overwhelmed by the turn out at our magazine launch party. The atmosphere was amazing as we gossiped and laughed along whilst drinking brew dog beers. Brew Dog and the Mitchell’s Thank you for the shooting the party....xxx
Set in the old Granada Studios The Love Fashion event housed independent designer stalls, fashion shows, food stalls and music.. Reminding me of Truman Brewery I really hope this event continues to grow and shows everyone that Manchester is fashion forward!
We were lucky enough to be invited along to the launch of the Giles Deacon and Ann Summers new collection. The collection is sexy and in Giles words ‘for the everyday woman who wants to show her curves and be seen’. He celebrates the everyday woman and with risqué prints, lace and gold bangle cuffs; we at Lilac are in! We NEED the cuffs in our lives like now!!!
Sony Experia Launch
Joana Vasconcelos
This launch rocked! Hosted in the Albert Halls (insanely amazing building by the way!) we turned up and we were ushered upstairs to not only a free bar, ball pool and numerous games to play but a set from uber ace girl group Neon Jungle.... So we drank and jumped in balls what more could we need!
Manchester Art Gallery hosted the Joana Vasconcelos exhibition last month and we made sure we went to see the pieces. Key pieces included the feather showgirl-esque helicopter, cupcake and a mind blowing gun covered, soft toy stuffed car! So surreal and creative this was worth the £7.50 entrance fee.
Hotel Su The most amazing trip we have ever taken here at Lilac. The hotel is stylish, contemporary and ALL WHITE!!! Apparently the best time to visit is September when it’s not too hot and you can chill by the sea in the beach bar with a cocktail of your choice, so get booking with flights on Monarch starting at £125 return.... A must for a stylish holiday!

Layla Sailor
Interview by Nicki Gillon
INTRODUCING THE ARTIST & PHOTOGRAPHER LAYLA SAILOR When did you decide art and photography were the route you wanted to take? I’ve always been into crafts and my mum used to take me to university with her when I was small, so that world seemed really exciting. I was definitely more into fine art and music but I accidentally ended up on a Foundation course when I was 15 (the college lost my details for A levels!) and I discovered mixed media so started to play with photography. When I left I was 16 and started photographing bands in Manchester for magazines and then I went on to do a photography HND & degree. Your first ‘I’m an artist’ moment? I think I had a lot of ‘I’m not an artist’ moments. I spent a lot of time having fun and not creating much, I lived in New York for a bit when I was 25 and really thought there would be a musical parade of people welcoming me! I remember walking around galleries in Chelsea showing my portfolio and feeling completely inadequate, and ringing up Richard Kern for a job at Barely Legal. I was so shy and insecure I didn’t know how to join the dots, so I just partied the whole time instead. Usually it’s when someone I admire loves my work, Fifi Chachnil sent me a lovely message on Twitter and that was pretty great! What do you want people to feel when they see your art? I want my work to have an impact. I don’t mind if people just enjoy the decorative quality, or if they start to think about the concept behind them. I have always believed that the visuals should be as strong as the concept behind them, so that anyone can enjoy the work. I am inspired by politics and by wanting to make a change, however small. I think that’s the role of an artist in whatever medium, your passions should push your work further. I love the work of JR and Ai Wei Wei, anyone who tries to stand aside from the commercial or art ‘scene’ and simply creates the work they want to, with a message. 14 - L I L A C

My mum is very strong and me and my sister were brought up to be independent and mindful of what was happening in the world. I think this still informs my work, but I know I am an artist and not an activist. I can only represent a cause that means something to me, or that I can support in a visual way. My fashion photography is a bit of a release from all that, I love shooting really high camp technicolour work. Surreal, cheeky humour really makes me happy. Man Ray is a big influence alongside Guy Bourdin, Miles Aldridge and Jean Luc Godard, so I try to use those influences with a bit of femininity and a bit of quirky oddness thrown in. Your journey in Paris? Why Paris? Do they understand your pieces more? Paris was a bit of a happy accident. I love Paris anyway but some friends of mine curated an
exhibition there a few years back and asked me to exhibit. At the same time a couple of pieces of work were used in the Printemps Vitrines by Showstudio for Visions Couture. I’m obsessed with old department stores and I pretty much live in Printemps when I visit, so I loved that! There is a very different approach to art there, I think it is accepted more as an important part of culture by everyone, there seems to be less elitism. After that I won Art Takes Paris and had my first solo show there last November which was amazing, then France24 featured my work on the Culture Show. I have only ever sold work in Paris, which may be because of the French-Russian decorative art connection over there. I think maybe Parisians understand me more because they don’t expect me to be cool, or fit into a scene, they just like my work!

Any moments you are particularly proud of?
What’s next in the Layla sailor journey?
Loads! Definitely my solo show in Paris, it was brilliant to see 2 years of my Kokoshnik project presented in a gallery. Helping Pussy Riot get donations and having 2 pieces bought by the V&A words and pictures archive. Seeing my piece for Artists Support Ukraine on the Huffington Post website. I’m just proud of sticking to my guns with my visual art, I have been told a million times by people that I should be ‘more commercial’, that my work is ‘weird’, that I should just have assisted more when I was younger etc, and I am glad I stuck to my instincts.
The new Kokoshnik work is in the planning stage at the moment so I am excited to shoot that, also I’m working out the concept for my yearly advent calendar. I have an exhibition of the Kokoshnik 2012 - 13 work going up at Harvey Nichols Bar & Restaurant with Comme Ca from 24th June - 4th August. I have about 3 other exhibitions waiting to be confirmed so lots of shooting this summer!

What I am tying to say is art is whatever you see it as, it doesn’t have to be a painting on a gallery wall or a person performing on a stage, art is everything you see in the world that gives you that feeling and moves you in some way, whether its clothes, music, sport, skating, even bloody trainers, go out there and make your own art, do what you want to do and do it because you love it. If you live your life like you’re trying to make art in whatever you do, I guarantee you you’ll find joy in it and you’ll wake up with a desire for life. I know that’s exactly how I feel on pay day when I’m off to by new Nikes... So to put this in perspective – I work for an Arts and Entertainment Company, The Lowry theatre is a mixed use arts building which has 3 theatres, an art gallery, housing the largest collection of LS Lowry work in the world, and a number of other smaller gallery spaces which have visiting artists and curators. I however have never had a keen interest in the things that people tend to classify as art. Of course when I go to Paris I visit the Louvre etc. and I can appreciate what I think is interesting in such places but I have always been much more interested in street art, street culture, music, Skateboarding (as a youngster) and the things that people used to always think of as on the fringes of art. I remember as a 13 year old, some kid at school got a pair of Nike Air Max Classic’s in black and pink and for me that was like when other people saw Van Gogh’s Sunflowers for the first time - the design, the colour way,
everything! F**k I wanted those shoes so much, that when they were totally ruined and worn out, I bought them from him for £5 of my well-earned dinner money. This appreciation of sneakers has stayed with me all my life, and I am what I can only describe as a wanna be sneakerhead. If I had more disposable income I would surround myself and my feet with what I feel is a selection of some of the most amazing works of art I have ever seen. The Patta x Nike Air Max 1 Premium TZ, Palace X Reebok CL Lthr R12 and Air Jordan 1 OG Black/Red to name but a few. These are some of the things that I see as art and the feelings that they give me when I unbox a new pair always takes me back to those childish feelings of excitement. I like nothing more than leaving the store and finding the nearest pub, getting a beer, sorting the laces out and smelling that smell.

ME AND KEVIN BACON
ART!! Art can be many different things to many different people, to me its tattoos and nail art. Oh tattoos you either love them or hate them, in my case I LOVE THEM!!! Its everything about them, the sound of the needle buzzing and the excitement/ nervousness of knowing that any minute you will have a tattoo. I have 17 tattoos and counting (I’m getting more just don’t tell my mum). I was 18 when I had my first one, it was my birthday present off my friends Chris and Ashlea. I remember going in all excited, you should of seen Ashlea looking terrified even though she only came to watch. I could hear the buzzing of the needle then I heard my name and this was it!! In a matter of moments I would have a tattoo. I sat down on the chair the stencil went on and then the needle, it wasn’t even bad, it feels like a hot scratch. All of a sudden my head went fuzzy and my eyes went blurry and I fainted. All I heard was Ashlea going out of the door and coming back with a can of coke. Stupid me hadn’t eaten!! (Always eat before!!) We laugh about it now and I have never fainted since. I think i might be a tattoo addict if I had endless amounts of money I would be getting one everyday. There is one person who’s tattoo style I love it’s Hannah Pixie Snowdon there just so detailed and well, they’re just so amazing!! Check out her intsagram @hannahpixiesnow.

“So another obsession of mine is NAILS”
I’ve never been that type of person to plan a tattoo it’s always been a spur of the moment thing, I got bored shopping and went and got a purple rose on my arm. I got that bored on a day out so I got a moomin behind my ear, I love moomins!! I would say tattoos are an obsession of mine! So another obsession of mine is NAILS!! When it comes to nail art the more Ghetto the better! I think your nails tell a lot about you, the colour of the nail varnish you wear, to the way you have them shaped (round, square, stiletto). I’m a round or stiletto girl square is too lady for me. I’ve been a lover of nail art since doing beauty therapy at school (yes can you believe it I did beauty therapy). I would get all the nail art pens out of the cupboard and draw all over fake nails. I was so bad it looked like a child had done them. I never really got any better but I can stick gems on my nails like there’s no tomorrow! But for anything else I leave it to the professional. My phone is full of nail art pictures mostly from WAH nails. This store is unreal if you ever get a chance to go you will not be disappointed, they’re located in Topshop in Oxford Street London. If I can’t get to WAH nails every time I want my nails done so I go to a place in Farnworth called American nails, they look terrified when me and my sister walk in with our WAH nails pictures saying ‘do this!!’ So it’s either one or the other, if I can’t afford to get a tattoo I’ll get my nails done as they are really tattoos for your nails! FOR THE ART ISSUE WE TOOK THE TIME TO SIT DOWN WITH OUR COVER STAR TOMMY-LEE WINKWORTH. RIGHT FROM THE FIRST TIME WE MET TOMMY-LEE HE HAS BEEN CRACKING US UP WITH HIS PUNS, WE WANT TO FIND OUT HOW AND WHERE THESE COME FROM AND WHERE THEY WILL TAKE HIM.... HI TOMMY-LEE!
So like I said we at Lilac have become accustomed to the Tommy-Lee banter and his quick witted ways. We wanted to take this issue and really discover what’s behind the model’s pictures. After studying fine art he is just about to release pun and image book called ‘Hello my name is Paige Turner’. I want to know how this came about and where the book and puns will take him. I sit down with Tommy and he tells me that from the age of ten he’s been creating puns and coming up with jokes, his first being ‘why didn’t the chicken cross the road?’ ‘He was too chicken’! This he is quick to point out is how he’s always been and states this is important, why? Laughter is important.
44 - L I L A C
MAGAZINE
So back to the book..... Strongly put together with a mix of photography, simple illustrations and quotes this book is a visual creation. It will make you stop and think, then laugh with its straight to the pun set up. So with other pun books available is Tommy worried about competition? ‘No I’m happy that there’s more puns being put out into the world’ also as we chat I discover this book is a little bit more risqué than the others, there will be a grittier feel with swearing and blow up dolls. Controversial, why not?!
The book is one thing but Tommy sees possibly a ‘lifestyle’ after the release of the book. I ask what this means? And refreshingly he points out that he would like people not to judge so quickly. Take people for who they are and be yourselves rather than follow a pack. ‘Never judge a book by its cover, apart from mine Hello, my name is Paige Turner’ by Tommy-Lee Winkworth

“Have a cup of positivitea”
I ask Tommy how he’s going to get his message across and he tells me that he has an idea after seeing empty billboards - why shouldn’t there be happy and positive messages? Thinking of the guy at 7am on his way to work looking up and having a smile and giggle to himself. I have to say I’m blown away by a young man who really just wants to make people smile! So can we expect to see Tommy writing these signs, maybe? Or is it Tommy for Mayor!! I’ve voted!
