A JOKE Halloween Worries A dog and a pig are talking about what they are going to be for Halloween. Pig: What are you going to be for Halloween? Oink oink? Dog: I would like to be food. Something hot. Woof woof! Pig: Then go to China. If you go there, you won’t have to ask twice to get hot. Oink oink! Dog: Woof! I wouldn’t go there if that was the last place on Earth to go to. Pig: Hmm … I think I will be on the plate for Halloween. Oink oink! Dog: If I go to McDonald’s, I will be on the plate, too. Pig: Why? Dog: Because I am going to be a hotdog. Woof woof!

STORIES An English Pig Finds a Friend There was a pig. It was an English pig. One day he was very lonely but then he saw another pig. But this pig wasn’t an English pig – he was a German pig. So they didn’t understand each other. The German pig said “GRUNZ, GRUNZ!” And the English pig said “OINK, OINK?” The German pig was very angry because the other pig didn’t understand him so he went home. The English pig was lonely again. One day the pig was in the park and suddenly there was one very crazy pig. It was a Japanese pig. The English pig said “OINK, OINK?” And the crazy pig answered to him: “BUU, BUU!” The two pigs didn’t understand each other but they became friends anyway.

Animals Have Language Problems, Too The Animal World Singing Festival was organised. Animals from all over the world came to sing. The famous choirmaster was invited to prepare the final concert. When all the animals were there, they started to practise. First the choirmaster called all the cocks to sing. And so they started: “Cock-a-doodle-doo,” sang the one from England, “Kikiriki,” the one from Spain, “Cocorico,” the one from France … and so on every cock in his language. Then the master invited cats to sing. First sang the cat from England: “Meow.” The second sang the cat from Italy: “Miao,” and the cat from Slovenia sang: “Mjav.” The master came up with an idea how he could still save the concert. He thought if all the animals from the same country sing together, it would be alright. So he called all the English animals to start singing the same song. As they started to sing, he began crying because they started: “Moo, cock-a-doodle-doo, meow, bah, squeak, woof, hee-haw.”

Tic and Tuc Let me tell you my story. Once I lived in a small village. And in the middle of this village, there was a small farm with four cows, three pigs, some sheep and one dog. Oh, I forgot to tell you who I am. Well, I am a dog. Maybe it is weird that I can talk, but you will get used to it. My owner was an old man, who absolutely loved me and my animal friends. Every day I went outside with my owner, and I had a very important place in the family. We usually went to the field and we worked there really hard. But one day something happened and it changed my life for ever. We found a little dog by the river and it was saying: “Hov, hov.” It was really funny for me, because I bark: “Woof, woof!” My owner took it home. When we bathed it, we noticed that it didn’t have one leg. And it was bleeding. My owner took care of it. A few months later the puppy became used to its new life and in this time we became best friends. We were like twins and we named us Tic and Tuc. Our lives were great until my owner brought home a young lady. And my owner wasn’t as old as I told you. I only thought so, because he was always dirty and he looked older. At first we were all really happy, but a few months later the lady showed us her real face. She turned out to be a real devil. She didn’t like us, particularly the puppy, because it barked so loudly and differently and it didn’t listen to her because it didn’t understand her. She kicked us and she didn’t give us food. However, our owner was so in love with her that he didn’t notice that. Years went by and eventually we had enough. We left the farmer and his devil. We didn’t eat for a month and a couple of days. We knocked on many doors, but everybody kicked us out. We were desperate but also happy because we had each other. One day we heard that our owner was sick. We ran for five days before we reached the farm and we were very scared. We didn’t think about the food any more. When we came to the farm, there were no animals and no devil. The owner was lying in the bed. When he saw us, he cried and he was sorry. We cried, too. In a second we forgot the past and we helped our owner. He told us that the devil left him because she didn’t want to have a sick husband. And soon the farm was the same as in the old times. We all learned from this lesson that a friend in need is a friend indeed. And if you happen to come close to our farm in these days, you will often hear: “Hov, woof, hov, woof,” and “Tic and Tuc, please, stop barking!” By Daša Zeme, 9.a - 14 -
Samir and Hunk One hundred years ago there lived a kid. His name was Samir. He lived in very difficult conditions, because there was war in Albania. One day Samir’s mum walked to his room and started talking about his dad. She told him that he had been missing for five days. In Albanian culture the oldest son had to accept the responsibility for the family if dad had died. Samir was the oldest, so he had to work every day although he was still just a boy – he was only seven years old! In Albania there was a shortage of food and water. Every day he went to the river and poured water into an old rusty dish. But the main problem was the food. He often had to fall asleep hungry. Nobody could help him because his mum was sick, his sister Ivana was only one year old and his dad was probably dead, because enemies threw bombs at his village every day. He didn’t know what he could do, so he decided to go to the forest to catch some animals. It lasted only about an hour and he was carrying his backpack and was armed with a machete. His mum warned him: “Watch out because enemies drop bombs everywhere.” Then he headed straight to the forest. He walked around the trees, crossed the rivers, but he couldn’t find anything. Five hours later he still found nothing and to make matters worse, it then started to rain heavily. He lied down on the leaves and thought about his mum, his sister and how they could live a bit better. Then suddenly he heard a voice: “Oink oink!” He looked around and saw a pig. He pulled the machete but the pig ran away. Samir ran after it and he caught the pig. He pulled his knife, but he couldn’t kill it. He felt sorry for the pig. He was hungry, but he couldn’t do it. Samir and the pig became friends and he named it Hunk. He was hungry for three days already and he knew that he had to kill an animal, but not his Hunk. He started putting out baits and one day he heard: “Oink oink!” He ran and saw another pig, which was stuck in the mud. He felt very bad about it and tried to save it, but the pig was so hurt it soon died. He felt bad and sad about it but he ate it because he was so hungry. Then he went home. He took Hunk with him and his family was very happy when they saw them. In the meantime their dad returned and brought food and water, too. Hunk was still Samir’s animal and whenever it was hungry, it went: “Oink oink!” Samir was happy whenever he heard Hunk because he remembered they met in difficult circumstances. In Albania it is a bit better now, and Samir’s successors have enough food now. From time to time they still tell each other their grandfather’s story. By Maša Zeme, 9.a
