These past four years at AAU have been monumental in my professional and personal development. There is much appreciation I have for the successes I’ve reached. First off, I want to thank my inspiration and motivation, my mom. She taught me to have strength and believe in myself. I am proud to be graduating as a first generation immigrant. I couldn’t have gotten to this point without her. A big shoutout to my sisters, friends and family that were my cheerleaders throughout my academic journey. They made me laugh when I was struggling. They were my self-care and my rock. They showed me how important balance is in life, and to reward myself often. Next off my homies Diana, Angel, and Andrea. We were each other’s concious in school. I love you all to the moon and back! I’m grateful to have grown side by side with you. Let the adventures continue and viva la vida nachos! I want to acknowledge my professors and mentors at AAU for the challenge. This training has prepared me for my professional goals. I will end with an inspirational quote that helps me gain the courage to go forth in my next challenge. “It’s okay to be scared. Being scared means you’re about to do something really, really brave.”

Tortoise with head and tale of sea snake, this ancient mythogical creture is considered the warrior of the North in China. It represents the element of water, and the winter season. The white tiger, this ancient mythological creature is considered the god of war in China. It represents the element of metal, the color white, wind, and the fall season. Its overall symbolism is the preserver, reason for its title king of all animals. For this concept, I am taking all of the elements that constitute this ancient symbol - color, texture, material, geometry - and incorporating this into the interior space, containing the Asian touch.

The wine process is a natural process that requires very little human intervention. It is up to us to improve it. This is the foundation for my partner, Cheeyee Lee, and I concept, the five steps of wine making - harvest; crushing and pressing; fermentation; clarification; and aging and bottling. You will visually experience this transformation through out our restaurant with help from the interiors and materials used throughout the space.

I’m very fortunate to be given the opportunity to further my knowledge in both areas, the following will show you a glimpse of what I’ve learned over the years. Enjoy!

Liliana Sampaio, born in the East Bay, California but raised in her parents home town in Oporto, Portugal. She is now an Interior and Architectural Design student at AAU, combining her experiences and ideas from both cultures and incorporating them into her designs. She is known for her incredible understanding and beautiful presentation of functionality, sustainability, and ADA designs. Being the daughter of immigrant parents and third oldest of four sisters, Liliana was raised with certain struggles. Instead of changing her whole mindset, she incorporated her learning’s and presented them in the most beautiful designs.
