TRA F F I C C I R C U LAT IO N The majority of vehicular traffic traverses Area 2 via Blackford Avenue, Kilgraston Road to Marchmont Road in the East (30mph speed limit) and Mor ningside Road in the West and along Cluny Gardens in the south along Church Hill Place , Strathear n Place, Strathear n Road to Kilgraston Road in the north. These roads are all 30 mph. All the other roads in Area 2 are 20 mph. There is therefore a need to direct drivers to the change is speed at each intersection along each road and this adds to the quantity of signage. Pavements are located on either side of all roads in Area 2 apart from a section of Grange Loan where the pavement narrows (pedestrians are advised of this via signage). There are pe destrian refuges on Grange Loan and a zebra crossing at the junction of Woodbur n Terrace and Canaan Lane. Pelican crossings are situated at various points along Mor ningside Road and at the junction of Church Hill Place and Mor ningside Road.

PA RK I N G O N-S T R E E T PA R K IN G There are 2 Controlled Parking Zones for permit holders in Area 2 – S1 (Marchmont / Sciennes) and S2 (Mor ningside). Permit prices are based on the size of a vehicle’s engine if registered before 2001 or CO2 emissions after that thus encouraging motorists to choose more environmentally friendly forms of transport. Parts of each parking zone lie within Area 2 and therefore each pa rking zone requires its own signage and this adds to the clutter of street signage. In addition part of Area 2 lies within a Priority Parking Area. Signage is therefore also required to direct drivers to rules of this further Parking Area where in demarked bays drivers are not permitted to park between 10 and 11.30 am, Monday to Friday. These measures are designed to prevent misuse of parking spaces by commuters and non-residents who wish to park long term 23 .

F ig u re 3 8 : Pa r k in g Are a B 1 s ig n a g e

In addition to permit holder bays, which are dema rked on the street with additional on street signage, there are general metered parking bays on some streets (Monday to Friday, 8.30am – 5.30 pm, maximum 4 hour stay) and also parking control measures such as double yellow and single yellow lines that also have their own signage.
