T H E SIS E X HI BI TION I N STA LL ATION : T he Grow th Ring o f Time ( 20 1 5 )

Chinese Xuan Paper, needle, pin

M

y current body of work explores how memory, emotion and pain can be suppressed and eventually buried by the passing of time. Specifically referencing experiences from my own childhood, I seek to address moments that have rendered me vulnerable and wounded. It is through the cathartic action of creating this work, that I find strength to confront my own suffering.

R

ecently, memories of these experiences emerged during my travels to Tibet. Wandering the streets, I encountered groups of stray dogs with tangled disheveled hair. In viewing these deserted animals, I was reminded of my exposure to neglect and abandonment in my youth. Through this experience, a reemergence of personal events surfaced and I began to make connections between the past and present. The Growth Ring of Time is composed of Chinese Xuan paper, needles and pins. Through the repetitive act of rolling paper I create thousands of paper bristles and arrange them into circular forms that are reflective of the natural world. They are installed in swarms or groupings that mimic their organic nature. The needles are covered with paper layer by layer— a reflection on how pain is buried deep within. LI LIU | PORTFOLIO

he artist book, Recalling, is made from handmade abaca paper and hair. Turning the pages, an increasing abundance of hair imbedded between two sheets of handmade paper is revealed. The accumulation of hair and the text on each page demonstrates a narrative that is reminiscent of my personal experiences and the transparency of memory. LI LIU | PORTFOLIO

T

he prints are the fragments of a memory. During a Tibet trip, on the street of the city, I documented sleeping dogs with tangled fur that had been neglected by their masters. This encounter of seeing these forgotten, not cared for animals brought back my personal memories many years ago that became the impetus for this new series of images. My long hair got knotted and tangled due to neglect. These images reflect my exploration into how memory can be influenced by experience.

GROUP ARK BRANDING (2015)

G

roup Ark is an accessory brand made by Chinese youths. The brand’s style is natural, simple and modern. I created the logo according to the brand’s name and the paper boat origami. The black complement the front white lines in giving the brand a simple and striking image, in addition to a modern feel.
