Lille-Lesquin Airport Located just 10 minutes drive from the city centre, Lille-Lesquin airport offers 70 international routes for passengers. 18 shuttles run between the airport and Lille city centre every day.

Getting around Lille metropole
Lille Métropole boasts the first fully automated underground built in the world, which was inaugurated in 1983. Its 2 lines are one of the longest automated metros, with 45 km of lines. They are connected to a dense bus and tram network which helps optimize travel in the metropolitan area. The streets of Lille can also be easily discovered on foot or by bicycle, or even by taxi-bicycle during which you can also enjoy a guided tour of the city.

According to legend, the city of Lille was founded in 640 a.d. after the victory of LydĂŠric over the cruel tyrant Phinaert. The two giants are today part of all festivals and celebrations in the Lille area. However, it was in 1066 that Lille was cited in history for the first time. The name of the town comes from the latin "insula" (island) because at the time of its foundation in the 11th century, Lille emerged from a marshland crisscrossed by the DeĂťle canal. Lille became part of the duchy of Burgundy from the 14th century. Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, at the time more powerful than the King of France, made Lille a financial and administrative capital. Lille was part of Habsburg territory before becoming attached to the Spanish Netherlands in the 16th and 17th centuries, which marked the Golden Age of the old town. In 1667, Louis XIV took control of Lille during the war of devolution, linking it permanently to his Kingdom, evidence of which remains today in the Citadelle built by renowned fortress architect Vauban. The 19th century saw Lille in the ranks as one of the great industrial capitals, expanded to incorporate 5 different districts. A century later the decline of the textile industry posed serious problems for the city which in turn decided to turn towards tertiary activities (banks, administrations, universities). Today Lille has returned to its tradition of commerce and is betting on Europe. Lille now begins a new page in its history with Euralille the newest "addition" to the city and the Northern Europe TGV station opened in 1994.

As the European capital of Culture in 2004 (which hosted 2, 500 events and welcomed more than 9 million participants), Lille unveiled its spirit by opening itself up to the world. Lille was the first European cultural capital which extended to a euro-regional area (from Roubaix to Kortrijk in Belgium). Lille is now a reference in the field of art and culture. The lille3000 event will continue this momentum by bringing together new cultures and contemporary artists in various areas around the city. Lille and its metropolis are also the home of well-known museums whose collections are renowned for their wealth and prestige. Every year these excellent venues welcome major international exhibitions. To be discovered: the Museum of Fine Arts in Lille (voir encadré) (see inset), Le LAM, Lille City Museum of Modern Art, contemporary art and art brut in Villeneuve d'Ascq, La Piscine, museum of art and industry “André Diligent” in Roubaix located in a magnificent Art déco building… Thirty museums of Fine Arts showcase an abundance of prestigious regional collections and works by local artists whose contribution is by no means insignificant to the ensemble, Gable, Mathieu, De Marle... Hundreds of other artists talk to us through their art about life, wars, festivals and everyday historical life and work... In 2012, the city of Lens, 40 km from Lille will host the Louvre 2, a sister museum to the famous Parisian museum.

The fine arts museum
Due to the size of its permanent collections, the Palais des Beaux-Arts of Lille is considered to be the second largest general-interest museum in France, just after the Louvre. The building, completed between 1885 and 1892, is typical of the monumental architecture of the late 19th century. Fully renovated in 1997, its 22, 000m² house prestigious collections of European painting (Rubens, Van Dyck, Goya, Delacroix…), a few key examples of 19th century French painting (David's Belisarius, Courbet's L’après-dînée à Ornans, Puvis de Chavannes' The Slumber…), a large collection of drawings (including 40 sheets by Raphaël), a sculpture gallery (Carpeaux, Rodin, Claudel, Bartholdi…) and 17th and 18th century ceramics. Also worthy of note is the presentation of relief maps of fifteen fortified towns in Northern France and Belgium (18th century models used by the French Kings during wars).

The Opera of Lille Since its reopening in December 2003, the Opera of Lille offers audiences in the North of France a variety of lyrical programming that spreads from the baroque period to modern creative works, without forgetting the great operatic repertoires. With 36% of the population less than 25 years old, Lille is the youngest city in France. Throughout the year the city of Lille displays a constant dynamism. The best illustration of this is the renowned ‘Braderie’ or street market, the largest market in Europe! This popular and unifying event takes place during the first week of September each year and hosts more than 10,000 vendors and 2 million visitors. With 2 days and 1 night of bargain hunting and feasting on the famous mussels and French fries, which have become synonymous with the market, the event has become a must-do and features a contest to see which restaurant can produce the highest pile of empty mussel shells!

While France is famous for its bourguignon beef simmered in wine, the North of the France offers its own famous version, Flemish carbonade, small pieces of beef simmered in beer. Also available is Waterzoï (poultry or fish with cream and small vegetables), Potjevleesch (literally "small pot of meat", terrine of white meat jelly) or the famous mussels and French fries. A Northern brewed brown, blond, amber or white craft beer gives the perfect accompaniment to any of these dishes. For those with a sweet tooth, let yourself be tempted by a traditional sugar tart, a waffle filled with vergoise (a sugar syrup) or even spéculoos (biscuit) ice-cream.

A L’Huîtrière Chief: Philippe Lor Since 1928, this restaurant, one of the finest fishmongers in France, has stood behind its astonishing Art Deco facade. Also one of the best restaurants in the city, it has boasted a Michelin star every year, without fail, since 1930. Le Sébastopol Jean-Luc Germond created Le Sebastopol in 1994 and has been a member of the Maîtres Cuisiniers de France since 1996. This prestigious circle brings together some of the country’s most experienced and innovative chefs. Authentic and creative, Jean-Luc Germond is passionate about the products he uses, especially their quality and freshness. Le Restaurant de Monsieur Jean In the Nord-Pas de Calais region, Marc Meurin is the only chef of a 2 Michelin starred restaurant (Le Château de Beaulieu in Busnes). In October 2010, he opened in Lille a new restaurant of creative food, based on local and seasonal products.

There are 2 particularly lively neighbourhoods of Lille by night: the Vieux-Lille and the MassĂŠna street and Solferino Street area. In the Vieux-Lille you will discover themed bars and many restaurants including Flemish estaminets that allow you to discover the gastronomic delights of the North of France. Estaminets are friendly welcoming restaurants where people from the North go to gather with family and friends over a beer or traditional dish. You will also discover many traditional Flemish wooden games which are guaranteed to enliven your meals. The Grand Stadium
With an eye to being an influential tool in the Lille region, the Grand Stadium will be one of the most beautiful stadiums in Europe. Intended to welcome the LOSC football team for its home games, it will also host various sporting (athletics, rugby, tennis...) and cultural (concerts, shows...) events. Started several months ago, the site is to be completed by the summer of 2012.

Visit the Bois de Boulogne, a 60 hectare park close to Vieux-Lille and the largest green space in the city. It is enclosed by the fortified walls of La Citadelle Vauban and runs along the De没le canal. This park, a favourite for joggers, also includes a free 3.5 hectare zoo which is home to about 300 animals of 70 different species, including its famous white rhinoceros. A few meters from the zoo you can visit the Vauban garden, a classified historical monument. This English-style landscape garden is covered by winding walkways decorated with an array of flowers and shrubs. An artificial cave, ponds and monuments in honour of personalities from Lille enhance the Parkway (including Charles de Gaulle who was born in Lille).
