Destination Lille

accueilwelcome With more than 226,000 inhabitants, Lille, in conjunction with the associated towns, Hellemmes and Lomme, constitutes the largest city in the North of France. At the heart of an agglomeration of 87 municipalities, Lille, with its French and Belgian neighbours, is part of a cross-border metropolis of 1.9 million inhabitants in the centre of a Euro-Region. This privileged geographic position, enhanced by a high-quality transport network, makes Lille a veritable gateway to Europe Indeed, people from across Europe are attracted to Lille, with its quality of lifestyle, economic dynamism, cultural vitality and festive energy. Increasing numbers of tourists are coming to discover Lille and are contributing to the reputation of the city.

With 14,000 new inhabitants since the latest census in 1999, Lille currently enjoys a demographic dynamism which pushes the city into second place in terms of population progression in France. Following the Vieux-Lille quarter, which has rediscovered its former splendour, then Euralille, the new business and commercial centre, it is now the turn of all ten districts of Lille to be targeted in the Urban Development Project, conceived hand in hand with residents in the aim of improving the quality of city life. Major cultural infrastructures, new squares and gardens, new local services, new housing initiatives: all of these projects are founded on a single ambition - to build a framework for social inclusion across the city.

Because of its ideal geographical location at the centre of a network of some of the most active European cities, its two train stations 5 minutes walk from Lille Grand Palais and its proximity to the ISO 14001 certified Lesquin airport, Lille offers serious advantages for travellers. Lille urban transport promotes the use of environmentally friendly energy: electricity, gas and biogas. The Metro and tramway of Lille are powered completely by electricity. 91% of all public transport journeys undertaken in the city use ‘clean’ energy. A Congressman/visitor to Lille can significantly limit their carbon footprint when arriving and travelling around the Lille area. These elements make Lille Grand Palais a low-carbon choice of venue.

According to legend, the city of Lille was founded in 640 a.d. after the victory of LydĂŠric over the cruel tyrant Phinaert. The two giants are today part of all festivals and celebrations in the Lille area. However, it was in 1066 that Lille was cited in history for the first time. The name of the town comes from the latin "insula" (island) because at the time of its foundation in the 11th century, Lille emerged from a marshland crisscrossed by the DeĂťle canal. Lille became part of the duchy of Burgundy from the 14th century. Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, at the time more powerful than the King of France, made Lille a financial and administrative capital. Lille was part of Habsburg territory before becoming attached to the Spanish Netherlands in the 16th and 17th centuries, which marked the Golden Age of the old town. In 1667, Louis XIV took control of Lille during the war of devolution, linking it permanently to his Kingdom, evidence of which remains today in the Citadelle built by renowned fortress architect Vauban. The 19th century saw Lille in the ranks as one of the great industrial capitals, expanded to incorporate 5 different districts. A century later the decline of the textile industry posed serious problems for the city which in turn decided to turn towards tertiary activities (banks, administrations, universities). Today Lille has returned to its tradition of commerce and is betting on Europe. Lille now begins a new page in its history with Euralille the newest "addition" to the city and the Northern Europe TGV station opened in 1994.

As the European capital of Culture in 2004 (which hosted 2, 500 events and welcomed more than 9 million participants), Lille unveiled its spirit by opening itself up to the world. Lille was the first European cultural capital which extended to a euro-regional area (from Roubaix to Kortrijk in Belgium). Lille is now a reference in the field of art and culture. The lille3000 event will continue this momentum by bringing together new cultures and contemporary artists in various areas around the city. As part of this this new dynamic of culture, the city of Lille renovated many industrial sites to create cultural areas accessible to all: La maison Folie de Moulins (Mill House Venue), the Old Brewery, La maison Folie

Lille and its metropolis are also the home of well-known museums whose collections are renowned for their wealth and prestige. Every year these excellent venues welcome major international exhibitions. To be discovered: the Museum of Fine Arts in Lille (voir encadré) (see inset), Le LAM, Lille City Museum of Modern Art, contemporary art and art brut in Villeneuve d'Ascq, La Piscine, museum of art and industry “André Diligent” in Roubaix located in a magnificent Art déco building… Thirty museums of Fine Arts showcase an abundance of prestigious regional collections and works by local artists whose contribution is by no means insignificant to the ensemble, Gable, Mathieu, De Marle... Hundreds of other artists talk to us through their art about life, wars, festivals and everyday historical life and work... In 2012, the city of Lens, 40 km from Lille will host the Louvre 2, a sister museum to the famous Parisian museum.

The fine arts museum

Due to the size of its permanent collections, the Palais des Beaux-Arts of Lille is considered to be the second largest general-interest museum in France, just after the Louvre. The building, completed between 1885 and 1892, is typical of the monumental architecture of the late 19th century. Fully renovated in 1997, its 22, 000m² house prestigious collections of European painting (Rubens, Van Dyck, Goya, Delacroix…), a few key examples of 19th century French painting (David's Belisarius, Courbet's L’après-dînée à Ornans, Puvis de Chavannes' The Slumber…), a large collection of drawings (including 40 sheets by Raphaël), a sculpture gallery (Carpeaux, Rodin, Claudel, Bartholdi…) and 17th and 18th century ceramics. Also worthy of note is the presentation of relief maps of fifteen fortified towns in Northern France and Belgium (18th century models used by the French Kings during wars).

Also available is Waterzoï (poultry or fish with cream and small vegetables), Potjevleesch (literally "small pot of meat", terrine of white meat jelly) or the famous mussels and French fries. A Northern brewed brown, blond, amber or white craft beer gives the perfect accompaniment to any of these dishes. Located only 80 km from Lille, Bruges in Belgium, is one of the most interesting and surprising European cities. It is nicknamed the Venice of the North because of its numerous canals flowing through the city. The narrow streets of the medieval town have helped preserve an old charm. There are numerous museums to visit along the winding streets. Not surprisingly, the historic centre of Bruges is on the list of UNESCOs World Heritage sites since the year 2000. To maintain the authentic character of town, Bruges does not possess over ground electrical wires. It’s a must-visit!

As an environmentally conscious business environment, Lille Grand Palais has, since 2008, sustainable development at the heart of its concerns. Its major challenge is to develop its activity while minimising the impact thereof on the environment. The actions put in place to limit environmental impact are based on three approaches; the destination, the building and the event. To develop this approach, Lille Grand Palais has created 3 labels of self-declaration: Low Carbon growth, Carbon Care and Low Carbon Event.

!

Lille Grand Palais goes further by offering its clients to host their events in the form of a LOW CARBON EVENT Accompanying this label are specific requirements that ensure that your event will have minimum impact on the environment. Lille Grand Palais offers you the possibility to also calculate the environmental impact of your particular event. Once the criteria set out in the specifications are met, you are permitted to add the logo of this label on all your communication media. This label shows your concern for the protection of the environment. You therefore demonstrate social awareness

Because of its ideal geographical location at the centre of a network of some of the most active European cities (London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Koln), its two train stations located in the city centre and the proximity of the ISO 14001 certified Lesquin international airport only 15 km away, Lille offers serious advantages.
