DOUBLE HOUSE + GARDEN 2014 Design Studio
123 Victoria Street Potts Point, NSW 2011 This project was to transform a physical site in a densely populated residential location into two houses with a landscape. The focus was on the spatial relationships between the two houses and a shared garden, for an art collector and an inhabitant of our choice. At least one public space was also required. An art gallery faces the street front with a passageway that leads to the public sculpture garden and a private access to both houses. This further leads to a private garden of the first house and a lowered shared garden for both residents for a view of the Sydney cityscape. Main bedrooms and balconies are orientated towards the west for optimal city views.

DIMENSIONAL AND GEOMETRIC SYSTEMS The Gehry Residence resonates with a playful aesthetic, transforming the original existing house with a new perimeter. Three studies of his house revealed the Deconstructivist influences of his design as he extended and transformed internal and external structures. Firstly, he took existing openings of the original house and reconfigured and distorted them, integrating this into the new skin. He layered the corner windows of the living and dining rooms to create a connection from the outside to the very heart of the house. He also layered the huge kitchen skylight and living room bay window to further emphasise this. A more indepth analysis of the kitchen skylight also reveals its Deconstructivist distortion of “a cube falling out of a box. Its unique joist system and size creates a focus and pause highlighting the significance of the kitchen in the house.

STRUCTURAL STRATEGY The basic structure of the house comprises of the original building surrounded by a new perimeter and the lowering of that perimeter to flow out towards the backyard. This elevates the internal structure and shifts the central focus of the house from the hallway to the living room, an important family room. The program of the house can be further divided into a series of moments. Long horizontals are split up into different rooms. Perpendicular horizontals overlap these moments which then can be further divided into smaller moments dotted around the house created by the skylights. The ceiling joist structure creates another dynamic relationship between as well as within spaces. It also orientates people within those spaces. The continuation of the joists connects spaces while the repetition of them emphasises the length of the room and creates a rhythmic flow. The perpendicular joists greet people at the entrance, leading them down the hallway and then down through the kitchen to the backyard.

BAR AND TRIPLE APARTMENTS 2014 Building Information Modelling (BIM)
This project required the designing of a bar and three apartments in a virtual site facing the main street of a medium-sized town in NSW. Orientation, privacy, solar access and functionality needed to be considered. The concept for this project was to create a strong connection between all three sections of the site - the bar, residential units and shared garden. At the back are three identical conjoined units with a common shared area on the upper level overlooking a central shared garden/backyard area. A private walkway between the two buildings reinforces the connection of all three sections of the site that surrounds and overlooks the shared garden.

BRIDGE SCHOOL 2013 Design Studio
The project focused on developing creativity by adapting renowned architecture to inspire new concepts and designs. The plan of Peter Zumthor’s Saint Benedict’s Chapel was conceptualised to inspire the plan and section of the design of a school that spanned across a valley. A separate folly and meeting place for the principal and student representatives on the valley floor was also required. The concept for this was to adapt the curved shape of the Chapel plan into an abstract futuristic form that stood out stimulating an emotional response. Its reflection of a leaf shape, however, allows it to also become a symbol of sanctuary. The folly also reflects this symmetrical and balanced form. Studios, computer labs, and offices are all elevated in sectioned floors under the large arched roof while a grand staircase that leads down from the circular ground floor is a lecture theatre and library.

ANH DO’S SANCTUARY Rooted In 2013 Communications Exhibited
“There are only two times. Now and too late.” This project focused on interpretting the client’s wants and needs through atmospheric representation through montage and sculpture with the above quote as the starting point. The open area under the tree serves as entertainment space for Anh Do’s shows while the tree acts as a metaphorical symbol for the significance of his family roots in Vietnam and Australia. The tree shelters and protects while also representing his happy and healthy new Australian life.
