Lieutenant Governor’s Greeting Hi Division 11 Key Clubbers! School is finally out! This is Lillian Xie, your current Division 11 Lieutenant Governor. After all the wonderful things we have done in school this year through Key Club, we should continue to help and serve our communities over the summer. The summertime is the perfect time of the year to help out because the weather outside is usually warm and sunny, and there is an additional option to work in more air-conditioned facilities. Whether you volunteer at a senior center or at a hospital or anywhere at all, proudly show your Key Club spirit by helping with enthusiasm and having fun while doing so! High school continues on for most of us in the fall, but graduating seniors will be moving on to the next step in their lives. While I have only known most of them for no more than a year or two, all of the graduating seniors have shown such dedication, passion, and initiative in their work for the community that they have set wonderful role models for the rest of their respective clubs. Hope that everyone enjoys his or her summer, and I’m looking forward to seeing most of you again in the fall! Yours in spirit and service, Lillian Xie

Farewell to Seniors

Class of 2013! Although I’ve only known most of you for no more than two years, I feel like I’ve really had the opportunity to get to know some of you. In fact, I look to most of you as examples that have been set for the rest of your clubs to follow. The dedication, commitment, and just plain ol’ love you’ve shown to Key Club is unbelievable and should be recognized. Your graduating class has set a hard act to follow, but I’m sure you have left y our club in capable hands (the amazing club officers for the 2013-2014 service year!). As you are leaving for college, you may have sorted through your stuff and gone through all the fond memories you have collected from volunteering with Key Club. And then, you may have realized that though you are leaving your home club, you can never really leave your home club—once a Key Clubber, always a Key Clubber! With that being said, I encourage all of you to join a Circle-K club in your respective universities or charter one if one does not already exist. For those of you staying in the city, Circle-K Liberty Division Lieutenant Governor Kristal Gonzales wishes to reach out to you, so if you could contact her via email at kgonzalez13@fordham.edu, that would be beneficial for both of you. I wish you all the best of luck in college and hope that you come back to visit! Yours in spirit and service, Lillian Xie

Seniors’ Farewells Janet Zhu – Bronx Science

Tina Lee – HSMSE

Barry Lee – HSMSE

To be honest, I always saw Key Club as just some generic nonprofit organization that appeared everywhere. Throughout high school, I never truly made the effort to be involved and committed to any clubs. That just left me wandering everywhere and unable to find a place where I belonged. Senior year was when I really made an effort to attend more Key Club events. Through these events, not only did I learn about the amazing movements that occurred throughout NYC annually, I got to explore so many parts of the city. (Not to mention, you got free stuff that served as great memories looking back now!) For the first time in my life, I felt commitment and devotion to something I enjoyed doing with people around me. As a graduating senior, I can honestly say I regret not joining Key Club earlier, but I’m so glad I wholeheartedly did during my last stretch.

When I look back on all the great times I’ve had throughout my high school years, I always seem to find the people and principles I’ve encountered in Key Club in every special and significant memory. Key Club taught me so much about humility – serving others before serving yourself. But it was never a workshop, presentation or club meeting that taught me this important quality; it was the people that I met and the things I saw them do for their homes, schools and communities. You’re rewarded with altruism, love and lifelong friendships. To this day I keep in touch with my fellow Key Clubbers - the ones that led me to this organization, the ones that grew up in this community with me, and the ones I met in higher heights. To my home club at HSMSE, my District Board members, and the Mighty New York District Key Clubbers, I commend you for a great year full of service and leadership, and I hope that the future holds nothing but greatness for our District. Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your family for the past four years, and I know that you will be a part of mine for eternity. You are all AMAZING (claps x10)!

It has been a pleasure working with all of you in the past service year. I have met a lot of you passionate Key Clubbers, and I really wish you the best of luck in the future. During my time on the District Board, I've gained so much knowledge, as well as a ton of new experiences I would've never had otherwise. Sadly, my time on the board has elapsed, and it is now time for my successor to take the stage and keep the website up to date, and I wish you, Jimmy Lin, if you are reading this, the best of luck! To the district board of the 2012 – 2013 service year, I will never forget you guys. You have had such an impact on my high school career and it would be a crime to lose contact with any of you. And lastly, to the district board of the 2013 – 2014 service year, I hope you all have as much fun as I did! Remember to cherish every moment you all have with each other and live every moment as if it were the last one. Before you know it, it’ll be you planning the Leadership Training Conference and you crying on stage in front of the cameras!

June Divisional Meeting

The June Divisional was held at NEST+m High School on June 14th. This divisional was special because not only was it the last divisional of the school year, but it was also the last Divisional for our Key Club seniors. The weather was rather unfavorable because it was pouring on the way to NEST+M but it did not stop so many people from attending this special divisional. Yay! The divisional went on as usual although Lillian was slightly late. She had some jokes to make up for it such as bringing along her mini flag for the Pledge of Allegiance. Our awesome Lieutenant Governor Lillian went over the usual stuff with us: each club's updates on past and future events and new information as well. What most people did not know, however, was that there was a planned surprise for the seniors. Many people from the Bronx Science Key Club had contributed money to buy roses to commemorate the seniors and in a sense, thank them. By the way, thank you to everyone who helped make it successful especially Sophia and Raina who walked in the rain with me to buy the flowers! All the seniors who were there were primarily from Bronx Science along with one from Stuyvesant and it was special for them and us, the underclassmen. Lillian handed out each rose individually to the seniors present at the Divisional, and afterwards, we held a round of applause for them. There were many funny photo ops as well. Divisional BBQ Fundraiser

On June 22nd, Division 11 hosted its Annual Divisional Barbecue Fundraiser in Meadow Lake Park. Although it was scorching and humid, I enjoyed the beautiful scenery. There was a wide hodgepodge of food, ranging from hot dogs and cheeseburgers to corn and chicken wings. Jimmy Lin, Daniel Khodos, and Vinson Huang cooked up an amazing meal for the division and its guests to enjoy. Aside from the delectable food, there were many activities in which to partake. Many Key Clubbers enjoyed a game of volleyball or Frisbee. Lieutenant Governor Lillian Xie brought water balloons and other members brought water guns. As an aggressor, I enjoyed pelting our Lieutenant Governor with water balloons and soaking her with water guns. By the end of the day, most people were soaked from head to toe, especially LaGuardia President Donna Youn. I definitely enjoyed the barbecue and would encourage members to attend the event in the future. Not only does it provide amazing food and activities, but it was also an opportunity to meet new members from other clubs and create new bonds.

Service Spotlight – Bringing Chinese Culture to Families Fair

Chinatown Business Improvement District Fair is an annual event for people discovering the beauty and history about Chinatown B.I.D neighborhood. People learn Chinese traditional culture in this fair and enjoy the fun Chinatown brings to us. The B.I.D. Fair is on two Sundays. Family Fair Day is on June 2nd. Key Club members from Stuyvesant High School helped to set up the B.I.D Fair on June 2nd. The jobs include setting up chairs and tables, giving out “I love Chinatown” stickers, balloons and fliers. The biggest task was setting up games, such as jumping ropes, volleyball, chess. The most interesting one was Giant Chess. We played ourselves and taught people who came to the fair how to play it. Although we had only 10 people, but we finished our tasks efficiently. We were bonding like the best working team; everyone functioned perfectly as an essential part of it. This event can teach all volunteers how to do teamwork. It was a wonderful time for us to sing, draw on floors with chalk, and play water together. Even though it was extremely hot and there were so much manual labor work, we found it worthy. Like Richard Zhou, a Stuy key clubber, said: “Seeing how all those people/ kids that participated in the fair today had smiles and looked like they have so much fun made everything worth it.” Dorothy Chen Stuyvesant Key Club Bulletin Editor

Service Spotlight – CAF Heroes, Hearts, and Hope Gala

Bright chandeliers and an ocean of men in suits were just the beginning of the CAF Heroes, Hearts, and Hope Gala on June 10th and 11th. The Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) focuses their efforts in helping the disabled to pursue an athletic career. Through the maze of the many rooms in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, not located in Astoria Queens like many might think, but rather in the heart of Manhattan. On the 10th floor of this hotel, the preparation for the CAF Heroes, Hearts, and Hope Gala started in the hands of volunteers—namely, those in Key Club. In this room, volunteering started off simple; organizing cards into the according envelopes and organizing bid numbers into tables. The highlight of the night was filling the walls of Nike bags with energy drinks, hand wipes, magazines, and hot cocoa powder. Within an hour, twenty of the Bronx Science Key Clubbers had amazingly filled over six hundred Nike bags. By working in stations, these Key Clubbers used the power of the assembly line to fill each bag one item at a time. One team passes the bags to the fillers and from there it goes to the stackers. When asked about how these Key Clubbers have so much energy, one Key Clubber casually replied, “We’re always like this.” The CAF Heroes, Hearts, and Hope Gala preparation gave us a bit of insight on how large organizations still depend on many volunteers like us to help give them the manpower for their projects. Stuyvesant Cabinet Induction Ceremony

Stuyvesant Key Club had its induction, which is a ceremony of accolade on June 20th. We had special guests, Lillian Xie, our Division 11 Lieutenant Governor, and Ms. Grace Law, the current President from Chinatown Kiwanis, celebrated with us. During the induction, those who showed extreme dedication and commitment to Key Club received certificates, which they had earned through all their efforts and service in the past year. There was a specific award for “Most Dedicated Key Clubber” from every grade. Even though the old cabinet members were leaving us, we knew that they would always remember the spirit of Key Club and bring it with them into their college lives. We also knew that with our new cabinet members, Stuyvesant Key Club will expand and grow stronger. We are looking forward to Stuyvesant Key Club’s performance in the new service year!
