About us... Lillico Attlee Country Stores have been a family-owned business since 1788. Originally operating as a grain and agricultural merchant, the business is now in its fifth generation of ownership with two stores, Lillico’s Country Store in Aylesford, and Attlee’s Country Store in Dorking. With family values very much at the heart of the business and passed down through the generations, Lillico Attlee Country Stores offer everything the rural community needs from equestrian clothing and farm feed to bedding and pet supplies. As well as a huge range of products, the stores also offer a number of services including rug cleaning, dog weighing, clipper blade sharpening, carry to car service and many more.

Steeped in history, Attlee’s Country Store is the slightly older of the two stores and has been located in the heart of Dorking town centre for over 200 years. Founder John Attlee (great-grandfather of British Prime Minister Clement Attlee) originally traded in corn and was just 23 years old when he first opened the store. The store has withstood the test of time, operating through nine monarchs, two World Wars and an industrial revolution to become the shop that it is today. In 1979, Attlee’s Country Store was purchased by W.M. Lillico & Son Limited and Lillico Attlee Country Stores was born. Still located at the Parsonage Mill site which it moved to in 1839, Attlee’s Country Store has been modernised into a new country superstore, offering even more products and services to the local rural community, whilst still upholding the important values set by the Attlee family.
Lillico’s Country Store, also originally trading corn and grain in Croydon, was inherited by William Lillico in 1840 from his boss, William Lock. The business moved into Kent in 1935 when Platt Mill was purchased in Borough Green, however the business did not fully relocate to Aylesford until 1977. Just like Attlee’s, the business was passed down from generation to generation, also withstanding the World War, recessions, and the great farming depression. With a commitment to serving the rural community and providing excellent customer service, our stores offer a friendly and easy shopping experience. We are also committed to reducing our carbon footprint and being an environmentally friendly company. Both stores recycle all plastic and cardboard waste, as well as donating unsold or damaged animal feed to local animal charities. Visit the stores today for all your pet, equestrian and farm supplies. Our expert team of staff will be able to assist you with any questions, queries, or advice you may need. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Equine First Aid Injury and illness can happen at any time. It is a good idea that you have a stocked first aid kit available in order to take immediate action and prevent the situation getting worse while you await veterinary advice. It is wise to have important phone numbers readily available – namely the vet and a friend with horse transport. Having a good plan in place can take the panic out of an emergency situation.
Types of wounds
Puncture – a small puncture wound may hide considerable dirt and damage beneath. These should be cleaned and encouraged to drain and do not require sutures. The skin can heal quicker than the underlying tissues with the potential to trap infection beneath the surface. Incision – where something sharp has sliced through the skin, often leaving smooth edges that are suitable for sutures or medical glue. Laceration – a more jagged wound with increased risk of infection and underlying tissue damage. These may be managed as open wounds depending on location and severity. Abrasion/graze – usually minor and treated with topical applications.
What to do if your horse has a wound
Move the horse to an area with a hard surface to avoid further contamination with mud and debris. If the horse is in pain or distress, call your vet for them to assess the wound safely. If the wound is very deep, bleeding profusely, or involving a joint cavity or the eye, call your vet immediately. It is not always obvious when joint penetration has occurred so it is best to call your vet if the wound is anywhere near a joint. You should also involve your vet if the horse is lame or penetration of the sole has occurred.
Lillico Attlee Country Stores
8
If safe to do so, restrain the horse and examine the wound, apply direct pressure with a clean dressing from your first aid kit to stem any bleeding. A thick layer of NaturalintX Dressing secured with NaturalintX Wrap applied with even pressure can slow the bleeding until your vet arrives. As long as it is not bleeding, wash the wound with cold water to reduce swelling and contamination. Add NaturalintX Equi Cleanse to clean superficial cuts. If you are uncertain whether veterinary attention is required, take a picture, and call your vet for advice.
What should you have in your first aid kit? Bandages and dressings – Cuts and grazes are the most common injury you are likely to have to deal with. Location and type will determine their seriousness. Stopping bleeding can be done by applying pressure but remember to pad well to exert even pressure, avoid wrinkles and make sure the bandage is not too tight or on too long. Remember to support the contralateral limb that will likely have to bear more weight. Bandages also serve the purpose of keeping the wound clean until veterinary attention can be sought.
All products referred to are sold in store at both Lillico Attlee Country Stores
Wound cleaning products and cotton wool – Wounds are often contaminated with dirt and debris. Cleaning with NaturalintX Equi Cleanse can help clean and reduce microbial load. Poultice – Applying a poultice can reduce inflammation, increase blood supply and draw out dirt and debris. Look for those impregnated with antiseptic to reduce infection risk. NaturalintX Hoof Poultice contains Tragacanth and Boric Acid Wound cream/ointment/spray – Some minor wounds and grazes will heal with daily application of NaturalintX wound cream, MSM ointment or Purple Spray..
Fly repellent – Wounds naturally attract flies, those flies may lay eggs in the wound causing a condition known as myiasis or fly strike. Try and reduce the amount of flies near your horse with repellents and environmental management. It is important that you only use products registered and approved for horses, such as NAF OFF Deet Power Performance. NaturalintX Purple Spray has added fly repellent action.
Arnica – NaturalintX Arnica Gel harnesses arnica’s natural ability as an anti-inflammatory; reducing bruising and aiding in the healing of soft tissue injuries. Not to be used directly on broken skin. Thermometer and stethoscope – Having the skills and equipment to safely assess temperature, respiratory rate, heart rate and gut sounds can be invaluable when deciding when to call the vet, while also giving your vet important information before they have even set eyes on your horse. Other useful items – Torch, gloves, hoof pick, head collar and lead rope, blanket, wire cutters, scissors, pen and paper, insurance policy details and important phone numbers.
Wound management
Wounds in horses are very common. Some may be small and require minimal intervention, while others may be serious and require immediate veterinary attention. The majority of wounds are found on the limbs, often caused by fences and gates. Being prepared for common equine emergencies will undoubtedly remove some of the panic you might feel when faced with these situations. Remember to always call your vet for advice. SPRAY AWAY ALL SEASON Which colour will you choose?
Prepare for the summer season with the correct fast acting, long lasting deterrent. With great choices available, the decision is in your hands. All NAF Off sprays are now available in 100% recyclable bottles with powerful new triggers that enable a greater reach on every spray. A legal fly repellent product will have an approval number such as ‘HSEXXXX’ or an authorisation number such as ‘UKXXXXXXX’ displayed on the label. This registration ensures you are using active ingredients known to be effective, and products whose safety is monitored. Checking your product is legal is important for equine welfare as there are many products on the market, some of which are illegal and even unsafe for use on horses. COMMONLY KNOWN INGREDIENTS DEET (Di-ethyl-m-toluamide) was formulated for use by US soldiers during testing times in the jungle in 1946. Recent research has suggested that DEET masks the odours emitting from our skin by reducing their volatility. Different companies include different active ingredients at different concentrations. Generally, the higher the inclusion rate of the active ingredient, the more effective the product. NAF have commissioned several studies on equine fly repellents involving DEET and believe that at the concentrations around those found in NAF Off DEET Power Performance products, we have one of the safest and efficacious products on the UK market. It is important to understand that DEET repellents designed for use on people may not be safe or legal to use of your horse. Eucalyputus citriodora oil is a natural derived oil with proven insect repellency. This active ingredient is found in NAF Off Extra Effect products. At the levels found in NAF Off Extra Effect Spray, this product is safe to use of horses and a popular natural choice for many.
Permethrin and Cypermethrin are active ingredients found in some equine fly repellents on the US market. These products are not approved for topical application to horse other than as approved by the Veterinary Medicines Directive, due to their high toxicity. Permethrin and Cypermethrin work by targeting the nervous system and creating paralysis or worse when the insect lands. Both compounds are toxic to both fish and cats, so caution would be advised when using around your horse – particularly if your yard relies on an efficient feline ‘mouser’ for rodent control. Citronella oil has traditionally been used as an insect repellent, however it’s legal status as a repellent has never been established in terms of efficacy and safety, and therefore no product based on citronella oil can be marketed as a fly repellent. This marketing ban has led to confusion with some people thinking it is banned for competition use, but that is not the case. NAF Off Citronella products are safe and legal to use, both generally and under FEI rules – they simply can’t be marketed as a fly repellent. The same applies to a number of other traditional essential oils, and this sometimes leads to riders experimenting with homemade fly repellents, however this is something we would strongly advise against. Essential oils, in particular, can be very aggressive, causing severe reactions on some horses, dependent on both concentration rates and how they have been combined. Many contain skin sensitiser to which you or your horse may react. Some are even harmful to the environment. Therefore, we advise those looking for an equine fly repellent that it is best to trust the professionals and buy a commercial solution. As with all topical applications, we advise that a small 24hr patch test is carried out before general application of any new product, simply due to the unpredictable nature of allergies.

Pesky Pests Top Tips
There are a number of Pesky Pests that can live on your chickens or in their housing. These external parasites can be a real problem for your flock if left unchecked. Follow the top tips below to keep your chickens healthy, pest-free and happy with Nettex. 1. Be vigilant: It is important to check your chickens and housing regularly and catch any outbreak fast – it makes it that much easier to deal with. a. Housing: Check the housing carefully every week when you clean it, pay special attention to all the nooks and crannies, ends of roosting bars and the nest boxes. b. Chickens: Keep an eye on your flock for any unusual behaviour, give them monthly health checks after they have gone to roost. It really helps you to know what’s ‘right’ for each hen and spot any issues quickly. 2. Cleaning routine: Take the housing apart as much as is possible when you clean it each week. Check all nooks and crannies. Wash and dry it all, then spray with Nettex Total Mite Kill Ready to Use Solution (remember to shake it first) - this is a powerful insecticide and disinfectant, which also has a coating agent that will continue to act on the mites, once it has dried. Shake Nettex Total Hygiene Powder liberally in the coop, paying Highly flammable liquidattention and vapour. May to all corners and the airways. be fatal if swallowed and enters nest box. May cause an allergic skin reaction.
Causes serious eye irritation. Harmful Attlee Storeslasting 12 effects. to Lillico aquatic lifeCountry with long
3. No straw, hay or newspaper: Mites and lice love heat and dampness, so eliminating these from the housing helps to keep the parasites away. Straw and hay also both harbour mites in the stalk tubes and contain dust spores, while newspaper will ‘wick’ wetness and get damp. We all love the image of a hen sitting on a nest of straw, but in reality, you are best to stick to something drier such as one of the shredded hemp beddings. 4. Dustbath: A dustbath in your covered run encourages social behaviour, and Nettex Total Hygiene Powder in the dustbath helps to create an uninhabitable environment for lice and mites. 5. Sunshine: UV light is a brilliant natural disinfectant and can even help to keep red mite at bay, so lay the panels and parts of your coop out in the sunshine while you clean it.
6. Nettex Total Mite Kill Aerosol for nooks and crannies contains permethrin, and its high powered action will get right into all the hard-to-reach areas in your housing to kill those mites.
9. When buying chickens always check them carefully and tackle any pest issues before introducing them to the rest of the flock.
7. Support peak egg production and quality by adding Nettex Egg and Shell Support Powder to their feed. An infestation can cause hens to use up valuable nutrients required for laying. 8. Check your chickens’ legs regularly for signs of Scaly Leg Mites. These parasites burrow under the scales causing sores and discomfort. Use Nettex Scaly Leg Spray to physically suffocate the mites and help bring relief. Apply with a soft toothbrush to the legs.
10. Add Nettex Apple Cider Vinegar to your flocks drinking water to support health and vitality during infestation. Avoid using in very hot temperatures, where birds may consume more water than usual. REMEMBER – Identify – Tackle – Deter Identify any risk (or infestation), tackle if necessary and take deterrent action to help keep your flock happy, healthy and free from Pesky Pests!

THE BENEFITS OF LILLICO ATTLEE GRAIN FREE DOG FOOD Choosing the correct diet for your dog is one of the most important things you can do for their health and wellbeing. Feeding them healthy, nutritious food will give them a longer, happier life with far fewer health complications. There are many different dog foods available to purchase and often the labels can cause more confusion than answering any questions you may have had. Lillico Attlee’s range of grain free dog food is a healthy option for your dog and has a minimum of 50% meat content in each bag.
LY S O L D O NE ! R O T S IN
HERE ARE A FEW REASONS THAT LILLICO ATTLEE GRAIN FREE COULD BE IDEAL FOR YOUR PET
High meat content
All Lillico Attlee grain free dog foods have a minimum of 50% meat content which is makes it a very palatable food for even the fussiest of eaters. Lifestage and appropriate kibble size
Lillico Attlee grain free dog food comes in all life stages from puppy to senior diets, to ensure your pet can have the right nutrition from the very start. The food also is available in small breed and large breed, which means the kibble size is suitable for your pet to avoid choking and make it easier for them to eat their food.
AN 15 M O R E T HA V O U R S ! L T F DFFEREN
Healthier skin and coat
A grain free diet can often help with itchy skin and a dull coat due to the higher meat content meaning they are naturally higher in Omega 3. Also the whole range has no added artificial colours or preservatives and is hypoallergenic making it a more natural alternative to some other foods. Healthier poo
Picking up poo is essential but not anyone’s favourite part of dog ownership, feeding a grain free diet often results in smaller poops and less frequent need to go to the toilet due to the grain being removed from the dogs diet and meaning the digestive system doesn’t have to try and digest the corn and wheat.

A guide to treating... As pet parents we love to spoil our pets, but when it comes to our small animals, you can have too much of good thing. Pets like rabbits, Guinea pigs, chinchillas and degus all have specialised digestive systems, so compared to most of our other pets they need a diet higher in fibre and much lower in protein, fat and sugars. We now refer to these pets as fibrevores. Even the omnivores - like hamsters - still need to be given careful consideration when treating, due to their small size. At Lillico Attlee we offer over 40 different treats from the Rosewood Naturals brand. This means there should be something for everyone, but the one thing about them all is that they only use natural ingredients – so no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives and no added sugars. The most important consideration when treating is portion control – larger sticks have traditionally been the most popular type of treat, but they are usually too big for one sitting. Instead, it’s best to add and remove each day, so one stick lasts over a few days or even a week. Or try their Naturals Snap and Share Bar or one-a-day Luxury Mini Bars. There are also mini treats in various fun shapes such as their Apple and Strawberry Bunnies which can be fed by hand, with just one or two per pet, per day. Ensuring they never over-indulge! The next thing to consider is how healthy the treats are, for just as with treats for ourselves and our other pets, it’s the case that some small animal
Lillico Attlee Country Stores
18
treats are healthier than others. The Naturals brand was the first to introduce the concept of herbal salads to the UK. These, such as Summer Harvest, are bags of dried herbs and flowers. They are rich in beneficial micro-nutrients, are higher in fibre and lower in natural sugars and oils, so are ideal for rabbits, Guinea pigs, chinchillas and degus. They are especially good for adding to and enriching hay, which also encourages beneficial foraging. Beyond these then most other treats have traditionally been based on cereals or grains. These are loved by most pets but are more energy-rich and can lack fibre and the wider variety of micro-nutrients found in veggies, herbs and some seeds. So, whilst the Naturals brand do use some grains in certain treats, it simply means these need to be fed in moderation, especially if the main diet you are feeding also contains grains - which most still do. However, the Naturals brand was also the first to introduce the concept of grain-free treats. So, we have treats like their Breakfast Cookies and Herb ‘n’ Veg Drops. Finally, treating should ideally be about enrichment: challenging your pet, making them work for their treat. When the treat is harder to eat it can be more stimulating for your pet and helps with portion control . The Naturals range is full of treats like this, as well as their signature hay-coated Hay ‘n’ Hide tunnels and Carrot Cottages – which pets love to shelter and play in, but also spend days trying to nibble the hay off! Happy Treating!

H E AT S T R E S S BULLETIN
SUMMER SUPPLEMENTS TO HELP YOU HANDLE THE HEAT Given the stereotypical temperate climate in the UK, heat stress may not be top priority when it comes to managing your animals this summer. However, the increasing occurrence of unusually hot summers with record temperatures and humidity will have significant negative impacts on animal production. Heat stress is measured using the Temperature Humidity Index (THI) which, as its name suggests is a combination of temperature and humidity. Animal discomfort and therefore performance is known to suffer once THI reaches 68, this can be ambient temperatures as low as 22°C with a humidity level of between zero and 45. As recent years have shown, these figures are more than achievable for the UK during the summer months. In an attempt to regulate body heat production as ambient temperatures rise, animals reduce all activity, including eating. Depressed dry matter intake (DMI) because of heat stress causes suboptimal rumen conditions and this in turn can reduce milk yield by as much as 20% and animal growth. As is true for any chronic stress, heat-stressed animals experience various metabolic changes which may adversely affect fertility and depress immunity, increasing the risk of clinical mastitis and raising somatic cell counts. With milk prices also tending to rise in the summer, the financial implications of heat stress on your dairy herd are clear.
Managing heat stress Both your herd’s environment and nutrition must be considered to successfully manage heat stress. Environment
• Ensure plenty of clean, cool water is available in sheds, fields and the milking parlour. This is vital for optimising milk yield as milk comprises over 85% water.
• Provide suitable shade in grazing areas and consider installing water sprinklers in collecting yards, where animals are likely to be grouped close together.
• Encourage cud chewing by keeping animals cool and comfortable. This action produces more buffer-containing saliva, stimulating DMI. Nutrition
• Take the little and often approach to feeding, if possible during cooler times of the day.
• Feed high quality forages to increase intakes and support digestion.
• Provide animals with free access supplementary feeds such as Rumevite, SUPAlyx or MAXX. Not only will these supplements provide essential minerals, vitamins and trace elements during this time but also deliver extra energy and protein to support production. Free access supplements support rumen health during this time by nourishing the rumen bug populations. In addition, the little and often feeding approach alongside the licking action will produce more buffer-containing saliva, reducing the risk of ruminal acidosis. What are the signs? Animals suffering the effects of heat stress will become lethargic and inactive, standing with bowed heads. An initial indicator of moderate heat stress is panting, as animals take rapid, shallow breaths as they attempt to increase heat loss. Heat stress is the likely cause if over 70% of your herd have respiratory rates greater than 80 breaths per minute. Keep an eye on your highestyielding dairy cows which are most susceptible to heat stress, as a consequence of having a higher DMI, thus generating greater metabolic heat during digestion.
• Help encourage animals to spend less time under the hot sun by positioning supplements in the shade.

TRAVELLING IN THE CAR WITH YOUR DOG Travelling with your dog in the car can be stressful for both you, the owner, and your dog. Below is a simple information guide on travelling with your dog in the car.
WAYS TO KEEP YOUR DOG SAFE
TRAVELLING AND THE LAW Although it is not against the law to travel with your dog unrestrained it is a recommendation in the highway code under section 57. “When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars.” Although not a legal requirement, the safety of your dog, people in the car and other road users must always be priority.
There are several ways to keep your dog safe in the car whilst travelling. Boot divide - this is usually a universal fitting divide which means your dog cannot get from the boot to the back seats of the car, these are particularly useful for owners of large dogs or owners of small cars where space is a premium. Dog crate – these come in a variety of sizes suited to your dog's breed and size, can be placed in the boot or on the back seat of the vehicle. Seat belt restraint – this is a universal device attaches to your dog's harness and has a selection of clips on which fit into the seat belt buckle in the car, and keeps them in place. Pet Carrier – if you have a small dog you can travel with your dog in a pet carrier.
TRAVELLING SICKNESS AND TRAVEL STRESS Many dogs can suffer from travel sickness, just like we can as owners.
10
Ways to reduce travel sickness and ensure a safe and stress-free journey for you and your dog. Desensitise your dog to travelling by doing short trips and ending the journey with something fun such as a walk, playtime with a toy or even feeding time. Gradually build the journey time up but always ending with something fun and exciting. Exercise your dog before travelling so they are more relaxed in the car. Although it's difficult, do not reassure a nervous dog, reassuring a nervous traveller will only show them that you too are afraid and nervous, try and ignore the behaviour if possible. Take breaks if it’s a longer journey to allow time for a leg stretch and a drink. Plan your journey to make sure there are safe places for them to exercise. Give them time to digest their food before traveling, or don’t feed them until you have completed the journey. You can talk to your vet about medication to settle their stomach if they’re still being sick travelling even on an empty stomach. Keep them cool. Cars can get very hot, make sure you keep an eye on your pet's temperature and open the window a little or put on the air condition if they seem to be getting warm. Don’t let your dog stick their head out the window, not only could they hurt themselves on passing objects, or fall out the car, but they are also a distraction to other road users. Never leave your pet in the car, they can overheat very quickly even on cool days and it can quickly turn to a dangerous situation.

A
Y DOG DA
with us!
When is National Dog Day?
National Dog Day is celebrated annually on the 26th of August. What is the history behind the day?
National Dog Day was founded in 2004 by Pet Expert, Colleen Paige, the day was created to celebrate rescue dogs in rehoming centres and to encourage the public to adopt a dog. Why the 26th of August?
The date August the 26th is significant, as it's the date that Colleen's family adopted her first dog from the local animal shelter. The 26th of August is often the date that adopters use for their dog's birthday if they rescued them, due to it being National Dog Day. Ingredients 175g rolled or crushed oats 75g Xylitol free peanut butter (normal peanut butter is dangerous to dogs) 1 ripe banana
What are we celebrating?
National Dog Day is a day which celebrates all dogs whether they are pure breeds or cross breeds, the day is also to celebrate all the ways in which dogs improve our lives within society, such as military dogs, bomb disposal dogs, medical alert, guide dogs and hearing dogs for the deaf. How do we celebrate?
You can be the answer, you could watch a dog movie, buys some treats for a rescue centre or take your dog on a doggie adventure. The day is all about celebrating dogs in any way you and your family can. Why not celebrate National Dog Day by baking some of these delicious homemade doggie biscuits. Homemade Dog treats

AN INTERVIEW WITH
Clive Nichols
Britain's Best Garden Photographer I took lots of pictures and chose what I thought were the best and sent them into a homes and garden magazine in the hope they would like them as much as I did, they got back to me and said they loved the photos and could they publish them. I then visited more gardens and sold the images and my career grew from there. is your favourite flower to Q What photograph?
I love tulips, the variety of colours and shapes make it a fantastic plant to photograph. All plants are living things and have their own characteristics and personalities and that’s what I love to capture in my images.
Q&A with passionate and successful flower and garden photographer, Clive Nichols.
Q
How did you get started with your Q photography?
I started photographing in the 1980's when I was at university in Reading. I used to love reading National Geographic and I was obsessed with the photos in the magazine, I dreamt of a job travelling the world taking photos of places I visited.
Lillico Attlee Country Stores
28
What made you focus on gardening photos?
I had been a travel photographer for about 3 years and one day I decided to concentrate on an area which would make me more money, so I did some research and realised how popular gardening was and decided to give it a go. It was funny as I didn’t know a lot about gardening and flowers at the time but I knew beauty when I saw it and so I started photographing flowers. I now have a very detailed knowledge of gardening as I need to know exactly when the gardens will look at their best as they are changing all of the time.
Q
Which was the first garden you photographed?
The first garden I photographed was in Gloucestershire and was Westonbirt Arboretum,
Clive Nichols greetings cards are available in store now in a wide range of designs!

ALEX CLARK ART
The Awesome Gift Guide She has a great passion for British wildlife, especially birds. She has a good working knowledge of garden birds, seabirds, gamebirds and birds of prey and makes it her duty to feed the birds at least once a day. "I worry about the birds not getting enough food in winter, I have always fed them and it doesn't take a lot of time out of my day to do my bit. You don't see many sparrows around here anymore do you? I can't remember the last time I saw a greenfinch, things are changing .. it's sad." Of course, its Alex's extraordinary talent as an artist and designer that has brought her to national and international prominence over the years. But ... what many people don't know is that she started out painting animals in a very different style to the way she paints them today.
Alex was brought up with Labradors, they are a part of the family. "Sally was my parents' first labrador, after that came Judy then Missy and Purdy, four crazy Labradors and me, I think it was fair to say my mum had a bit of a reputation (The labrador lady). She would walk me in my pram with four dogs alongside" Alex started out in business when she purchased a disused old stable in Stanhope. Born in Shotley Bridge, County Durham in 1974, Alex has never flown far from her family nest and is a proud resident of the Northeast. Wey Aye Man .. Although close to the urban sprawl of Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, the quiet Derwent countryside was always far enough away for her to feel like part of an altogether different kind of lifestyle. Best known for her sympathetic, quirky and unique depiction of dogs, cats, birds and farm animals you don't have to cast your gaze far to see where her inspirations came from.

The verdant, rolling fields and hills stretching into the horizon are populated by sheep, cows, horses and birds including the recently reintroduced red kite. Alex was brought up with Labradors, they are a part of the family. " There have always been dogs at home, I honestly can't imagine a life without one. One of my earliest memories as a three year old was sitting in my snowsuit amongst a litter of puppies, our labrador Missy had given birth to. I would just sit there and let them run around me." Alex's love for dogs is easy to understand but she has always been inspired by the natural world around her.
"On The Moors" - Alex takes her inspiration from customers sending in their pet pictures for her to recreate,
"I was a serious artist .. Really. For most of my teenage years and early twenties I was trying to perfect my fine art studies of birds and other wildlife, especially otters, which I always loved. In my mid to late twenties I was a regular attendee of craft fairs, selling my fine art work for anything between £250 to £1000 and I was building up a solid reputation in the business. I definitely saw my future, at that stage, as a commercial wildlife artist. Things were going in the right direction and my work was actively sought after by certain collectors, I struggled to keep up with the demand. With things going into overdrive I took the plunge and bought an old stable building in the Weardale town of Stanhope, it seemed a natural progression to have a gallery from which I could encourage people to come and see my paintings. I quickly sussed however that I wouldn't be able to keep up with the demand for my work, so this is where I got the notion that I had to consider running off limited edition prints and perhaps print a few greeting cards as well."
HOWEVER,
"I have a secret" ... It just so happened that I stumbled across my signature painting style by accident. In all truth, I am indebted to my younger sister Liz who also likes to draw. One day, probably a typical Northeast rainy one, she began to sketch a very basic illustration of a sheep. She wanted to make it happy so she gave it a big beaming smile, I then decided I would give it bright, rosy cheeks. Little did I know that such a simple creation would become a true inspiration. Even today, it seems amazing to me no one else thought of it first ... I remember thinking at the time that these fun, quirky little characters were perfect for the country people who frequented my gallery and that they would keep the till ticking over on slower days when no one bought one of my originals.
Alex's creations can be found not only on greeting cards and art prints but on gift wrap, bags, cushions, coasters, fridge magnets, bookmarks and a large variety of stationary items as well as a ceramic collection. Her products are sold worldwide and she shows no sign of slowing down.
It's fair to say Alex's art work has proved to be very popular indeed. Within a few weeks I was selling them both in my gallery and at the craft fairs I attended up and down the country. It was a eye-opening experience. The amount of cards I was selling blew my mind." This is how Alex started out on the well worn path she continued to tread today. Her cute greeting card characters are now instantly recognised by dog, cat and animals lovers the length and breadth of the United Kingdom and now overseas as well. Quiet and modest, she is not one to boast of her achievements but Alex is immensely proud.
"I am contacted fairly regularly by young artists who ask me how to get started and for tips on getting their work to the masses. I don't know of any shortcuts. You have to have a viable idea and you need to get your work out there. If your artwork is proven to be commercial enough, the truth is there is no substitute for good old fashioned hard work, that's my experience anyway." Alex's creations can be found not only on greeting cards and art prints but on gift wrap, bags, cushions, coasters, fridge magnets, bookmarks and a large variety of stationary items as well as a ceramic collection. Her products are sold worldwide and she shows no sign of slowing down.

Team Tutsham
Not your average riding school It all started in 2004 when a little girl looked over the fence at the pony in the field. She asked Maxine Buckby if she would be allowed to have a ride on him. It created a spark, that caught a light and the fire was started. Team Tutsham was born.
We are a charity for vulnerable children Team Tutsham's door is open to children from a variety of backgrounds predominantly aimed at providing disadvantaged and vulnerable children with the opportunity to learn to ride horses, care for horses and socialise with children of varying ages and backgrounds. We endeavour to be available for all children who would like to use our facilities. We believe that by working with horses at Team Tutsham Charitable Trust, children get a great opportunity to develop a variety of skills such as: working as a team, socialising with others, develop personal responsibility, growth in emotional wellbeing, develop an understanding of country life, open themselves up to further education within equine and agricultural lifestyle. We are privileged to work alongside some outstanding Schools for Children with Special Educational
Needs. These children come and visit us during their school hours and do some practical work on the farm. This can be grooming some ponies, to yard duties and more recently, they have started work on creating the Team Tutsham Garden - A place to grow flowers and veggies.
It’s not just the children who benefit from being part of Team Tutsham. We have many gifted or rescued horses and ponies living with us on the farm. (Not to mention the rescued dogs, pigs, goats and chickens) They are carefully rehabilitated, assessed and given a suitable job to do. They live as naturally as possible, in herds, with all year turn out. Our horses thrive on routine, constant handling and being part of the team. They teach the children all aspects of horsemanship and enjoy
getting oodles of attention. They have proven to be outstanding teachers and we are proud of each and everyone of them. At Team Tutsham, all our horses are guaranteed a home for life. With that in mind, it means we have a number of elderly and retired horses now living out their twilight years with us. They enjoy a slower pace of life but still have lots they can teach to our children. We now have over 35 horses and ponies in our
team, all different and all perfect in their own imperfect ways.

RIDING SCHOOL OF THE YEAR 2021
Rescued Horses and Ponies
Saddle Club For us, learning about horses is much more than just the riding. We teach the children about caring for the whole pony. Children get dropped off in the morning to find out who their pony is for the day. They then go and catch their pony from the field, groom and tack up, before their group riding lesson. (We have 5 levels of lessons to cater for all abilities). Lessons can be in the school, a hack or having a go at some cross
country jumps. We like to mix it up so our ponies and their riders don’t get bored. After the lesson, the children must untack and turn their ponies out before stable duties and lunchtime. Then there are theory lessons to help children complete their Team Tutsham Equine Award Certificates and if time allows a spot of tack cleaning before home time. Children make strong friendships and work together to achieve their goals and its heartwarming to witness. We have plenty of amazing volunteers on these days who ensure the children are always well supervised and supported in their learning.
WANT TO KNOW MORE? Unfortunately we currently have a waiting list for riding lessons but we do hold pony experiences during school holidays. To get more information about this and get your name added to our mailing list, please contact secretary.teamtutsham@gmail.com.
JOIN OUR TEAM VIRTUALLY! To see what we get up to on a daily basis, be sure to follow along with us on our socials. Instagram and Facebook - Team Tutsham
RIDING SCHOOL OF THE YEAR 2021 We were delighted to have been nominated, thrilled to have been shortlisted to finalist and ecstatic to have won this award! Hosted by The Equestrian Business Awards, we had stiff competition amongst some other amazing riding schools. We have always said we are not your average riding school and that caring for horses is so much more than the riding.
FUNDRAISING
As a registered charity, we work hard to raise funds. This money obviously pays to keep all of our horses well looked after and this is our main priority. If the ponies are looked after, it means we are able to allow free access to the children that would not ordinarily be able to access them. We are also driven to constantly improve our facilities. We want to have excellent facilities for our horses to live in and our children to learn.
LINKS WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY We are lucky to have support from so many people and businesses in the local community. Team really is visually, all about Team Workare and Not Tutsham only pleasant but they valuing the unique contributions that everyone also surely tasty. So, don't forget to put has to offer. If you are a local business and would them on your daily diet. Stay healthy like to support us, we would love to hear from and stay safe, happy people! you!

UK soil often requires some fertilisation to put essential nutrients into the soil to help plants thrive. Speak to a member of the store team to find out which fertiliser is best suited for your soil type.
FERTILISE With the sun shining for more hours a day, your plants will be grateful for the extra hydration. Watering not only supplies the plants with essential water but also helps to cool the soil down to avoid burnt roots. The best time to water is either first thing in the morning or late afternoon / early evening, to prevent scalding the plants and avoiding the water evaporating.

When planning your garden, it’s a great idea to think of the wildlife visitors who will also visit your garden. Plant seeds or plants such as Lavender, Borage or Crocus to attract bees to your garden, and plants such as Red Valerian, Marjoram and Knapweed to attract butterflies. Adding a bird bath to your garden design also adds extra depth to your garden and is a welcome hydration station and cool down for garden birds.
ATTRACT WILDLIFE VISITORS
The perfect time to start planting biennials and perennials is the start of summer. Although summer seeding has benefits such as warmer propagation, be careful with some seeds which are more sensitive to extreme heat.
GET PLANTING YOUR SUMMER SEEDS
Unfortunately, the warm weather which helps our seedlings and plants thrive also helps pesky weeds to grow. Regular weeding is important, not only for aesthetics, but removing weeds gives plants room to grow and ensures only the plants are using the nutrients and water in the soil.

However, strip grazing is a great method, for those that don’t have access to large amounts of land, to rest parts of their pasture. It gives it the chance to recover and re-grow.
HARROWING A process that removes dead material from the land. Harrowing lets air into the soils surface and also allows sunlight into the bottom of the sward. It is handy for breaking up any droppings that may have been missed too.
ROLLING
MAINTAINING A HORSE AND PONY PADDOCK Taking care of your horse and pony paddock will help to maximise grass quality and growth on your fields. This ensures that your horse is getting a sufficient amount of nutrients and vitamins when grazing. A good paddock maintenance regime will benefit both the horse and land.
POO PICKING We know it’s not everyone’s favourite job, but doing this task weekly stops it getting out of hand, as we all know it soon builds up! Horses generally won’t graze areas that are tainted by droppings, and this encourages weeds to grow. It is also a great contribution to your worming program. Keeping on top of droppings on grazing areas will also help to reduce parasite burden.
AVOID OVERGRAZING Overgrazing leads to fields becoming bald and patchy, which in turn aids the growth of weeds. Of course, not everyone has spare fields that they can rotate their horses between.
Most paddocks will get churned up over winter, mainly along fence lines and around gateways. Rolling is best done when the soil is still a little damp but not too wet. If you roll when the ground is too wet will compact the ground and stunt grass growth.
SOIL NUTRIENTS AND FERTILIZER Over 85% of grassland is mineral and trace element deficient, so this is a very important part of pasture maintenance as this will affect the quality of grass produced. Soil sampling is a great way to get an accurate breakdown of deficiencies and nutrient levels. As proud stockists of Suregrow Paddock Pasture Fertiliser [4bags per acre] we are strong believers that this is the best thing on the equestrian market. It contains the major nutrients (Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Sulphur) needed for growth, weed suppression and stimulation of root development. Slow nutrient release ingredients avoid lush grass growth. There is also no need to remove horses during application.
PATCHING Areas along fence lines and gateways are normally where reseeding is needed the most. In these areas we recommend using our Equine Restoration Paddock Grass Seed Mix which is quick to establish. This means it is great for filling in any other bare patches around your grazing land.

A B O UT BEES THIS SEASON, WEATHERBEETA ARE BUZZING ABOUT BEES! Did you know that the vast majority of plants we need for food rely on pollination, especially by bees? Bees also pollinate around 80% of wildflowers in Europe, so the countryside would be far less interesting and beautiful without them. But they are in trouble. The decline in population is caused by a combination of stresses – from loss of habitat and food sources to exposure to pesticides and the effects of climate breakdown. More than ever before, we need to recognise the importance of bees to nature and to our lives. To help support the bees, WeatherBeeta have teamed up with Plan Bee Ltd to adopt 2 beehives for the year. Throughout the spring season, WeatherBeeta will be promoting the importance of bees with the help of Plan Bee’s qualified beekeepers, who will be visiting regularly and providing updates. LET’S CELEBRATE NATIONAL HONEY BEE DAY
Saturday 20th August
What is the history behind National Honey Bee Day? National Honey Bee Day originated in America in 2009 when honey bee keepers, known as Apiarists, petitioned for a day to be made official for the celebration of honey bees and their keepers. It is an awareness day when beekeepers, beekeeping clubs and associations, and honey bee enthusiasts from across the United States celebrate honey bees and recognise their contribution to human's everyday lives.
Honey bees live in large groups consisting of a single queen, workers and male drones, the workers are often sterile females.
What are we celebrating? National Honey Bee Day is not just a day to celebrate the bee itself but to celebrate all bee enthusiasts, bee organisations and clubs, and to appreciate all of the health benefits that natural honey brings to our lives.
Honey bees are normally only seen between April and October.
How do we celebrate? On National Honey Bee Day you can celebrate in a few different ways, you could buy a pot of locally produced honey to support your local suppliers and bee keepers, buy a bee friendly plant for your garden such as Lavender or Borage to attract bees to join you in the garden or even just learn more about these super little pollinators from your local bee keepers.
Is it always celebrated on the 20th of August? Unlike other national days, National Honey Bee Day changes annually and is celebrated on the third Saturday in August so changes each year; this year it is the 20th but in 2023 it is the 19th of August.
Queens live for several years. Their wings beat 200 times per second.

FARMING FEATURE: SHEEP
Sheep have been farmed in the UK since the Roman times and are a traditional and important part of our modern environment, economy, and rural society. Today, there are around 30 million sheep and lambs in the UK and the value of production was around £1.3 billion in 2020. With around 150,000 jobs across sheep farms and associated industries, employment in the sheep industry is worth approximately £290 million to the economy. The industry provides a range of high-quality products, from delicious meat for your dinner table to high-quality wool for clothing and insulation, among other uses. Every single day of the year, sheep farmers are hard at work across the UK tending to their flocks and carrying out hugely beneficial environmental work, from helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increasing biodiversity, to sequestering carbon from our atmosphere. Sheep farming is an invaluable tool not only for improving and safeguarding our beautiful countryside, but also for tackling and mitigating against threats such as climate change, flooding and soil degradation. UK sheep farmers are some of the best in the world for these efforts. For example, did you know that the carbon footprint of a kilo of lamb produced in this country is just over half that of the global average? This is thanks to our high standards and efficiency of production methods.

LOWLAND
Typical breeds: Texel, Suffolk. Charollais, Clun Forest, Romney, Oxford/Hampshire/Dorset Down. Traits: Grow fast, have a heavier frame, more prolific. Purpose: Mule ewes are mated to a lowland terminal sire breed to produce crossbred lambs. Most lambs are reared for meat production but some may be kept for replacements. The easier terrain and conditions, better grass growth and larger frame inherited from the terminal sire, mean these lambs grow faster and produce more meat in less time. Slower growing lambs join the store lambs that have arrived from the hill and upland areas to be grown on root crops over the autumn and winter months.
UPLAND
Typical breeds: Female hill breeds mated with breeds such as Bluefaced Leicester, Border Leicester, Teeswater, Wensleydale, Devon & Cornwall Longwool. Traits: More prolific than hill breeds, and do better on the lower, easier terrain. Mules inherit mothering abilities of hill relatives and prolificacy of upland relatives. Purpose: Older ewes’ drafter from the hills can continue to breed in the easier conditions and are mated with longwool upland breeds to produce Mule lambs. Female Mule lambs are transferred to lowland farms for breeding. They are crossed with a lowland/terminal sire breed. Male lambs are reared for meat production, either here in the uplands or on a lowland farm.
BREED FEATURE LLEYN SHEEP Lleyn sheep originate from the Lleyn Peninsula in North Wales. Until recently they were a relatively unfamiliar breed of sheep in the UK. The last 10 years have seen the Lleyn become the fastest growing breed in the UK, and now Lleyn can be found on farms all over the country. Lleyn numbers are now growing rapidly in Southern Ireland too. Farmers soon find that the Lleyn ewe is an ideal sheep; quiet in nature, prolific with great maternal instincts, milky, and will not eat you out of house and home. The Lleyn thrives on both lowland and upland grazing. Its versatility makes it suitable for many farming systems. Lleyn Breed Characteristics. The Lleyn sheep has a distinctive and feminine head which is warm white in colour with a wide forehead and good length from eye to nose. Their head is straight to a slight dish and narrowing towards the nose. They have ‘lively’ bright eyes and a black nose. The Lleyn ears are medium in size and thickness and black spots are desirable. Lleyn sheep are well set sheep with a good length to the back, long and well arched ribs and a wide and well forward breast. The legs should be of average length, with no wool lower than the hocks. The tail is docked according to current practice. The Lleyn wool is a good length, dense and high quality and containing no kemp. Lleyn ewes and rams are both hornless.

Omega for Digestion
Keeping your horse comfortable
A healthy, functioning digestive system ripples positive effects across the body. From levelling the mind to improving immune health, condition and regulating hormones, optimum gastric health is central to animal wellbeing. This is why Omega Equine have developed a range of supplements designed to help maintain the whole digestive system. With regards to the differences between the two Ulsoothe products, the Ulsoothe Powder is designed for optimal gastric health, and contains ingredients which can help soothe irritation within the digestive system and improve overall digestive health. Many horse owners have reported fantastic results when feeding it to horses who are prone to, or at risk of gastric ulcers. It contains pre- and probiotics to boost the gut bacteria, as well as antacids to help reduce the acidity in the digestive tract. The ingredients also form a gel which can soothe the digestive tract, and help line the mucous membranes to allow fluid transfer in and out of the cells to assist growth and repair of damaged or irritated areas. We would suggest the powder for a horse who has active ulcers, or is more prone to developing them. We would recommend acting under advice from your vet if you have had an ulcer diagnosis. The Ulsoothe Gel is a more cost-effective product, but is targeted more at mild cases or maintenance/prevention of ulcers. The gel, like the powder, lines the digestive tract to hydrate the cells, assist with the repair of damaged areas and helps reduce irritation. It is also able to create a barrier over the membranes to prevent further irritation. It acts as immune support and is a good all-round supplement to support gastric and overall health. Digest gut balancer. The probiotic is Saccharomyces Cerevisiae (NCYC Sc47), which is live yeast encapsulated in dead cells which allows the yeast to pass through the stomach acid alive and make its way to the hindgut where it can help balance the microflora and utilise the oxygen produced by any ‘bad’ bacteria, reducing the risk of hindgut acidosis. The prebiotics in Digest are fructooligosaccharides which are easily fermented in the hindut, and again help stabilise the microbiome population and as such improve digestive efficiency and reduce the impact of any changes which might cause digestive upset.

“YOU CAN LEAD A HORSE TO WATER, BUT YOU CAN’T MAKE HIM DRINK.” That’s especially true for severely dehydrated horses in need of urgent veterinary intervention. But there are ways to keep your horse well-hydrated from the start and avoid these potentially dangerous scenarios. Begin by monitoring your horse or ponies water intake. This will give you a good understanding of how much water they normally drink in order to flag any potential issues. Changes to their water intake can be triggered by many reasons including during periods of hot or cold weather, travelling and exertion, during periods of stress or change, or while sick and convalescing. While monitoring a stabled horse might be easier it is still important to monitor your field horses as well, especially youngstock and veterans. In addition, supplementing your horse’s diet with salt (normal table salt) by adding it to horse’s hard feed is an easy way to help replenish electrolytes lost through sweating. Horses at rest will normally consume around 50g of salt per day from a salt lick. However, some horses do not reliably use a salt block so adding the salt ensures they are getting what they need. Alternatively, the Saracen Horse Feeds RE-COVERY Mash has been formulated to tick both boxes with regards to a way of increasing water intake as well as stimulating the thirst response. The banana flavoured RE-COVERY Mash can be fed as and when needed, alongside any diet because no vitamins or minerals have been added. Drenched in water, ideally with water sitting on top of the feed, the horse is encouraged to drink the fluid before eating the mash which includes a source of electrolytes to help stimulate the thirst response. In conclusion, it’s easy to keep your horse hydrated if you follow some simple steps: provide plenty of clean fresh water, ensure horses’ diets meet their sodium requirements, and use Saracen RE-COVERY Mash strategically to support your horse’s hydration when necessary. For more information on Saracen RE-COVERY Mash please ask an in-store colleague.
