The basics for crocheting include yarn and a crochet hook. Hooks come in many different size, these can be used for different sizes of yarn, or different different style of stiches.
If you are doing anything in the round or that requires counting, you may want a place holder. These are sold, but paper clips also make a great place holder.
You will also be needing a pair of scissors. If you are doing a project requiring you to attach different parts together, you will want some yarn needles as shown above in the blue rectangle.
If you are doing a project that requires eyes, it comes down to preference. The ones shown on the left come with safety backs and are good for projects that will be around children.
Next, wrap the yarn around your fingers twice. The first wrap should be closer to your finger tips, then the second wrap could be closer to the base of your hand.
A magic ring is the best way to start a round project.
First, hold the loose end in your left hand over two fingers, having the part attached to the yarn source in your right hand.
Pull the second yarn wrap through the first yarn wrap. You should have something like the image to the right. Leave this loop loose because you will be working into it, to create a round base.
Hold the yarn source tight, in your left hand.
Then, take your crochet hook and go under the first yarn wrap. Hook onto the second yard wrap.
You should have a loop on your hook from pulling the second yarn wrap through the first. Next, you are going to yarn over, thise means wrap the yarn source around the hook.
Next, put the hook through the circle. and yarn over. Pulling the hook and the yarn back through the circle.
To this wrap the yarn over the top of the hook and into the hook part. Then, pull that yarn through yarn loop that was previously on the hook. Make sure to leave the new loop on the hook.
You should now have two loop on your hook.
Next, yarn over and pull through both of the loops on the hook.
You can repeat the step of putting the hook though the circle and yarning over and then pulling through the two loops as many times as your patttern says.
To the left is shown the completed first stitch. This type of stitch is also what is considered single crochet. You can count the stitchs if needed, start from the hook and count backwards.
To move onto the next round of stitches just work into the stitch closest to the hook.
On the first stitch of a new round make sure to put a place holder or paper clip in the stitch.
Once you have compeleted the number of stitches necceisarty for your project, you can pull the loose tail from the magic ring tight.
Follow the instructions for the magic ring to the point where you have a loose circle and loop on your hook.
Next, hold the source your yarn in your left hand. One way to hold it is shown to the right, but you mostly just need the yarn to be tight so you can easily work with it.
Then, grab both the loose tail and then tail connected to the yarn source and pull them tight. This will leave you with one tight loop left on your hook, as seen to the left.
Then, yarn over, this is the same as the magic ring, but you don’t go through a circle.
Continue to yarn over pull though step for as many sitches as you need for your project. One stitch looks almost like a small bubble of yarn. As seen to the below, one stitch is what is
Pull the new loop through the only loop on your hook. This is how you get one stitch for a chain.
The chain will look something like the pictute below.
hook. Then you do a single crochet, just like as was done for the magic ring. Go through the stitch yarning over, pull back through the stitch, yarn over, and pull through the two loops on your hook.

If you start crochet and find that you like it you may experience the following symptoms.
Unfinished Project Syndome And Always want to be Crocheting
