MIXED-USE + URBAN DWELLING VOCATIONAL-TECHNICAL EDUCATION

Oklahoma City, OK Eddy Tavio 4th Year, 1st Semester

R O J E C T S U M M A R Y:

Sitting in the Northwest District of OKC's 'Core to Shore' plan, the Live + Learn Campus is a vocational-technical higher education school with an emphasis on urban dwelling. The goal is to further one's education while also being able to inhabit the grounds of the school. Any size of group, from one person to a family of four can live and learn on this campus with all necessities of a school being included to help further their lives.

Property Acreage: 5 acres Structure Sqft: 520,000

K E Y L E A R N I N G O U T C O M E:

Having the primary goal to be mixed-use, the challenge was to fill this site while also creating density and community to accompany the purpose of higher education. Creating form with a half a million square feet can be daunting. But that obstacle turned into a learning curve and it created a simple but effective campus with lots of space for people to gather, inside and outside.

proposal within 'Core to Shore' to add density while also maintaining what is there already. What is investment in the city and contains momentum for the completion of the vision. But focusing more which is what happened in this studio, brings more living situations as well as diverse topics within sites.

9
What if 10,000 people moved to the heart of OKC? IMAGINE OKLAHOMA CITY AS THE LEADING FRAMEWORK FOR THE FUTURE OF URBAN LIVING

NORTHWEST DISTRICT:

My site is situated within the Northwest district. This area is sandwiched between a high dense, entertainment district and a singlefamily neighborhood. Using this context to our advantage, my district wanted to cater to the Oklahoma City families that are nearby. Placing educational, recreational, and family friendly activities within the neighborhood completes that.

Another aspect that is included in the Northwest district is a central pathway that connects the north to the south part of the district. Community is important to us and this pathway completed a big portion of our goal.

THE CAMPUS SITE:

The site of the Live + Learn Campus is situated between Walker and Lee Avenue as well as SW 6th and 7th Street. Being such a large area, a campus was placed to further encapsulate the available space and offer areas of reprieve that the community can use.

A big highlight within the campus is the vantage points of community spaces, with connections in between the buildings to offer visitors/students to gather. This isn't just a campus to go to school in. It's a campus that the community can gather, eat, play, and live

Circulation is another design choice to have continuous flow throughout. It can be seen within the inner parts of 4 out of 5 buildings. There are gathering areas within that circulation to use as another community point.

Lawrence, KS

P R O J E C T S U M M A R Y:

Cultural precincts in cities play a significant social and cultural role, bringing vitality to urban life and educating their citizens. This project looks at the low knowledge of the citizens of Lawrence, KS pertaining the agricultural history and migration into this area, and lowers it onto a vacant lot in Downtown Lawrence. Viewing the surrounding developments and cues, a design is formated to really embrace them onto this site, allowing for a high awareness of their surroundings to flower.

K E Y L E A R N I N G O U T C O M E:

This site was a small area to play with, allowing for forceful events to really shake things up. Pushing and pulling elements grants products to develop, which can highlight themes such as natural sunlight, continued agriculture on the site, and creating a passageway for all residents to come through. Creating an outcome for all to enjoy is a big key.

With having the main glazing facing the west, some type of shading was necessary. Placing louvers on top of the exterior windows creates a filter to allow sun to still come in but indirectly. The shape of the louvers are based on the curve of the Lawrence topography, pulling in agricultural and spacial elements of the site and the land it occupies.

This community center enhances the art cultural area that is within the surrounding KCK neighborhood. It also satisfies the current lack of places to gather to grow and develop the art talent that is possible in children and adults. Its main purpose is to allow people from all backgrounds within this area while also adhering to the problematic industrial surrounding area.

K E Y L E A R N I N G O U T C O M E:

Through this project, the availability of providing easy spaces for culture to flower can be very simple. Looking at the neighborhood and researching the context gives opportunities to exercise empathy while also providing well-rounded resources to all.

With art pertaining to the visual sense and the inspiration that comes from it, it is imperative to include that within the structure in as many ways as possible. Therefore, putting the rooms in areas that can see the river/downtown or the courtyard to draw individuality from them.

P R O J E C T S U M M A R Y:

Creating a small space with all key rooms is not an easy feat. But adding it on a high sloped area adds character. Shaping and providing a natural habitat for quarantined international architecture students is the key element here, while adding in as much natural light and views of the outside. When the pods were multiplied, letting all the pods have the views of the horizon but still having privacy was significant, placing them on the same contour line is an important component.

K E Y L E A R N I N G O U T C O M E:

The aspects of this 8 walled octagon living area are all looked at. The approach, gathering areas, and privacy is important as much as the layout of the 400 square foot habitat. Learning the importance of surrounding structures and vegetation can help a lot to the design, drawing in many inspirations.

A slight purposefulness of bringing views and objectives into designs is an important object of architecture. This project creates a space that modulates light, blurring the line between object and space. Providing a space where the creator itself can visualize them in the space is a key concept of this project. Learning that every line, space, and curve has a purpose is something that was highly drawn. It gives a more inviting feel to the space while also giving functionality to every piece. The process of designing something incorporates every part, creating steps to everything.

Architecture to me is a culmination of integrity, history, surrounding influence, and design worthiness. This topography image on the cover is of the neighborhood I grew up in and it has been instrumental in inspiring me to pursue this design path and to continue to follow this passion. I grew up in Brookside, Kansas City in a welcoming, tutor-style house in a quintessential neighborhood that was definitely formative. That style and design have opened my eyes to how the world of architecture can be: mature but classic, innovative but subtle, or just simple and peaceful.

With the combination of my architectural knowledge and my goal to always tell a story, I provide a unique outlook on what design can be. Whether it be in the environmental context, the history of the neighborhood or building, or even just what the owner/instructor is intending it to look like, I consider every aspect and strive to deliver a thoughtful design. I am eager to continually increase my knowledge base and look forward to enhancing my architectural thinking.

Thank you and I appreciate your time viewing this portfolio.
