CORAL KILLER

Inspired by marine pollution (plastic) , and the need to stop contaminating our oceans with plastic. Firstly, i used fabric slashing technique layered with 5 different types of fabrics, to emulate the waves of water in the bottom of the sea. Then, I created coral reefs made out of 5 types of plastics in various colors.

LE PITRE TRISTE Le Pitre Triste Pre–Fall ‘18

“Le Pitre Triste ” is inspired by the Pierrot , the 19th century sad clown. A character in French pantomime , dressed in floppy white outfit. He is a melancholy dreamer that ’s hides his pain from others except for the lone teardrop below his eye.

15 CONCEPT

Le Pitre Triste Pre–Fall ‘18

These colors represent the two emotions of the clown as grey and beige set a more dull and negative vibe just as the Pierrot did, while bright colors like orange and emerald green bring a more rich and positive tone like the more colorful and happy side of the circus

Q

How did you begin your journey in fashion design?

Before I enrolled in the Fashion Design course, I used to help my grandmother in her tailor shop. I helped her measure her customers and cut fabrics based on the patterns she did. I was fascinated with it and my interest in garment-making grew. Hence, after graduating high school, I signed up for fashion school. After I got my diploma, I decided I wanted to learn more, especially garment construction, so I decided to get a degree.

Where do you find inspirations?

Sometimes the quickest way to get inspired for a project is to see what others have done. Not looking to copy anything, of course, but to see the concept come to life, the shapes, the colors, anything I gravitate to, and hopefully spark an idea for something. Also, I visit art museums as well, seeing sculptures and paintings and forms of expressions by other artists always seem to inspire and excite me.

Q

“I can’t wait to

What techniques do you use to create your garments?

Currently I enjoyed doing textile manipulation. I use different type of manipulations and experiment using different types, colors and shapes of embellishments and fabrics. I prefer to design basic garments because I want people focused on the textile that I’ve made on the garments.

Q

How has your work changed?

fter I used to be very focused on the design process of making clothes and making sure every garment I made was "clean" and "perfect”. A agworking with textiles and textile manipulation in my university, and how our lecturer encour es us as students to experiment with our work and samples, I learnt that clothing does not have to look super polished to look good or compelling. One time, for a sustainable clothing project, I went through the rubbish bin looking for scrap fabric, and I realized how much of these interesting, really cool fabrics were being thrown away. I started collecting the scrap fabric to play with them to see how they could work together and it really build my interest in textile manipulation and now I heavily incorpo rate different fabrics and ways of manipulating them into my designs.

Q

Tell us about your workspace?

Other than the classroom/campus workspace, I usually work from my room. I have my own portable machine and a small table where I work from, sometimes I work on the floor.

Q

What’s your biggest achievement?

Creating a three-look collection within a month for the Malaysia Fashion Week Competition in 2016 and I won. At the time, I was making certain garments for the very first time. There was so much trial and error but I managed to make it work in the end. That’s my best achievement so far and I could not be prouder of myself.

Q

What’s plans do u have in the future?

I’m planning to continue my studies and get an MA in Textiles. I aspire to be a successful Textile Designer in a fashion house.
