1947 The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) granted the 13 founders of UNFCU (all staff members of the UN) approval via a formal Organizational Certificate for permission to operate as a federal credit union. 22 October Charter approved; initially serves 54 members.
1950 UNFCU opens office on 6th floor of the Secretariat Building, New York. Hires first paid employee.
1962 Charter revision to extend membership to professional staff outside New York.
1973 UN retirees join the Credit Union. 1975 Office moves to DC 1 Building in New York.

1978 Locally-recruited staff permitted to join UNFCU. 1980 Office moves to UN Plaza Branch, New York (24 employees) and opening of branch in Secretariat Building, New York.

1981 Rapid product expansion: Checking, Share Certificates, Telephone Audio Response, Transmatic Line of Credit.
1985 Introduces First Mortgage Loan, VISA® Credit Card. 1990 Offers ATM/Cash Cards. 1993 Opens Headquarters office at 820 Second Avenue, New York. 1994 Launches Call Centre. 3
1996 UNFCU website launches.
2006 Sponsors UN Inter-Agency Games for the fifth time; draws record number of participants, 1,600 staff members in Pesaro, Italy.
1997 Opens first office outside the US in Vienna, Austria. Employee base reaches 100. Launches Investment Centre at UNFCU.
1998 Establishes Liaison Representative Programme. 1999 Total assets reach US $1 billion mark.
Establishes Regional Advisors with representatives based in Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi to provide direct feedback to the UNFCU Board of Directors on member needs. Completes new global headquarters in Long Island City, NY, uniting over 250 UNFCU staff members in a single location to streamline operations and enhance efficiencies. Launches UNFCU Insurance Centre.
2000 50,000th member opens a UNFCU account.
Opens new Representative Office in Rome, Italy.
2001 Revamped UNFCU website goes live.
Introduces Loans With a Global Impact campaign, raising nearly $13,000 for UN charities dedicated to improving housing, the environment and children’s lives globally.
Officially opens Geneva Representative Office in Switzerland. Introduces UNFCU International Calling Card through a partnership with GlobalPhone Incorporated. Sponsors UN Inter-Agency Games (UNIAG) for the first time. eStatements made available to all members globally via UNFCU website.
2002 Launches UNFCU Online Mortgage and Consumer Loan Centres. 2003 Opens Nairobi Representative Office in Kenya. Named “Federal Credit Union of the Year” (large asset category) by the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU). Wins “Excellence in Mortgage Lending Award” (large asset category) given by the CUNA Mutual Group and the CUNA Lending Council.
2004 Total assets exceed US $2.0 billion. Named winner of the “NAFCU Innovation Showcase Award” for WebChat™.
Debuts UNFCU Travel Services. Enhances VISA® Credit Card Program with features such as the new European Rewards Program, completing the first phase of Systems Advantage. Introduces UNFCU Financial Advisors, a wholly-owned subsidiary of UNFCU. Satisfaction survey reveals that over 4 out of 5 members rate UNFCU one of their better or best financial institutions. Reaches US $1 billion in loans.
2007 Conducts presentations/member visits at UN duty stations in Copenhagen, The Hague, Vienna and Nairobi. UNAIDS fund-raising campaign has raised nearly US $350,000 since the program’s inception in 2001. Names UNFCU Regional Advisor in Rome, Italy. UNFCU celebrates its 60th anniversary.
2005 Expands Geneva Representative Office at ILO; opens new Representative Office at Le Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. Conducts road show to Santiago, Chile and gives presentations in Spanish. Tim Challen, MSR in Geneva, leads Kilimanjaro Initiative, partners with UN-Habitat’s Safe Cities Programme and succeeds in raising funds and awareness about combating crime in East Africa.
