The image represents the greening of the Christ. It is from a Cretan prototype and transformed by the medieval, pagan concept of the male aspect of nature, usually a face hidden amongs leaves that mysteriously sprout from his mouth. They are incorporated as stone or wood carvings in many European churches. I painted the icon as a commission to accompany my Cretan Green Madonna icon.
