MANAGER’S NOTES Good afternoon and welcome back to the Fairgreen for today’s Under-19 Southern Elite Division match against Bray Wanderers. We extend a warm welcome to everyone from Bray. I am expecting a close game against a team who are still unbeaten after their opening four games, but hopefully we can bounce back to form ourselves and get back on the winning trail. Unfortunately, our unbeaten start to the season came to an end in Athlone last Saturday. It wasn’t one of our better performances but I thought we were unlucky. I felt whoever scored first would win it and so it proved. We conceded a soft goal. We probably should have scored but it was one of those days where the finishing wasn’t on. In fairness, I didn’t think we deserved to win it although we missed a few chances. It was a bad day at the office. We made more changes to the team and that’s something we’ll continue to do. We weren’t getting carried away when we won and we’ll not be getting carried away when we lose. We have a good bunch of lads here, they can do better and I’m sure they’ll pick themselves up. It wasn’t as if we were poor against Athlone. We didn’t take our chances and we gave away a couple of sloppy goals. I didn’t think we deserved to lose – it had a draw written all over it and the first goal was always going to be crucial if it came. We changed the team and I still think we’re right to do that. You learn who you can and can’t use in certain matches. Maybe I’m putting too much faith in the very young lads, so we have to be careful and not wear them out. We’ll most likely make changes again this afternoon but we’ll not do it just for the sake of it. We want to win but again it’s about development, especially in the first
round of matches where we’ll have a look and give everyone a fair chance. Then we can say we’ve given everyone a fair crack of the whip and maybe in the second round we can go and play our strongest team and focus on winning. Now, we have to give lads starts. We have another lad starting today and then two against Wexford Youths in a fortnight – everyone will have started then. We’re expecting a tight game against Bray. They have only conceded four goals – they’ve won two and drawn two. I think they’ll be very strong defensively, so it will be a close game. Hopefully, we can come out on the right side of the result. Thanks again for coming along to support the boys today – it’s appreciated by all involved. Enjoy the game, Tommy Barrett.

U19’s: LIMERICK SUFFER FIRST LEAGUE DEFEAT Blues for Barrett’s boys as run ends Second-half goals from Aaron O’Neill and Aidan Byrne saw Athlone Town inflict a first defeat of the Southern Elite Division season on Limerick at Lissywollen last Saturday afternoon.
edge of the box. Barrett introduced James Duggan at the break and – after Athlone struck a free-kick over – he was almost in but the ‘keeper saved well. On 51 minutes, Athlone hit the front against the run of play through O’Neill. As Limerick looked to respond, Clyde O’Connell’s cross was headed just wide by McSweeney and then Duggan chipped wide of an empty goal when he really should have scored.
In what was proving to be a tight game with a lot of play in midfield, Limerick gradually took control and they twice went close through centre-half Conor Maguire, who narrowly missed the target from a free-kick and then a corner. Past the midway point of the half, they could hardly have gone closer when ‘keeper Tommy Holland collected well and delivered the ball to Oisin Kelly who fed Jack Lynch but his shot from inside the box came back off the upright. Ross Mann and captain Val Feeney – who had only returned home from the firstteam’s trip to Derry at close to 4am – then played a good one-two which put the latter through on goal but he shot wide. At the other end, Holland saved but that was a rare chance for Athlone as Limerick continued to press. More big chances fell the way of Mann and Seán McSweeney but both failed to convert from close range. Athlone then had a good chance to open the scoring but their No8 put his effort wide from 12-yards, after Holland stood up well. Before the break, Limerick had further opportunities as Kelly headed into the goalkeeper’s hands when he had more time to finish and then Mann forced a good save after getting in on the right. Declan Cusack then drove over from the
The Shannonsiders were lucky not to find themselves two goals behind soon after when they conceded possession at the back and Athlone crashed an effort off the crossbar. The home side, though, did double their lead on 64 minutes thanks to Byrne’s finish, leaving the visitors with a mountain to climb. More subs were introduced as Limerick chased the game, but despite pressing, Athlone held firm. There was another chance for Maguire who headed wide from a good position and then McSweeney had the ball in the net but it was ruled out for offside. The same pair could have reduced the deficit late on but the ‘keeper saved from Maguire and McSweeney headed wide from a corner in one of the final actions of the game, as their unbeaten start came to a close. Limerick: Tommy Holland, Liam McCartan, Clyde O’Connell, Conor Maguire, Stephen Nolan, Oisin Kelly, Val Feeney, Jack Lynch, Declan Cusack, Seán McSweeney, Ross Mann. Subs: Ross Fitzgerald, Killian Brouder, Killian Hayes, James Duggan, Shane Lowth. Unused Subs: Arek Mamala (GK), Eoin Whelan.

CHAIRMAN’S NOTES Good afternoon and welcome to today’s Under-19 Southern Elite Division match against Bray Wanderers. We welcome the management team, players, officials and all those who have made the trip from Bray to Limerick today to see the up-and-coming players of both clubs in action. Bray have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season and should provide another good test for Tommy and the players as we look to get back to winning ways. We enjoyed a fantastic opening to the campaign with a draw at Waterford United – who have proven themselves to be a top team in this division – and then three straight wins. All good things must come to an end, though, and we had our first loss in Athlone last weekend. Tommy felt that the team probably did not deserve to lose or indeed win the game, with a draw perhaps the fairest outcome. But nonetheless, credit to Athlone who took their chances when they came. Sometimes in defeat, you learn more, and I have no doubt that our players will recover from their setback. In our last home game, it was a fabulous display against a very strong Cork City side, who really have been the benchmark in the Under-19 League since it came into existence three years ago. It was a game that showed the quality that we have in our squad and indeed the strengthin-depth. Tommy has used all of the players
available to him in the opening five games and by the end of our seventh game he has planned on giving all of the players a start. As we keep saying, we are all about development of players in our underage structure. We all enjoy winning but the ultimate goal is to develop these players to a standard where they can make the step-up to the first team, as many of our Under-19s have done over recent years. Tommy has that very much in his focus and has used five substitutes in each of our games to date, allowing everyone game-time. Your attendance and support for Tommy and the players today is again very much welcome and appreciated. Last evening, we played our final home game of the first-team season and next Friday the campaign will close with a trip to Shamrock Rovers. Over the winter months, there will be plenty of live football to enjoy in the Under-19 League and with our Academy teams, so please go along to support our young players when you get the chance. You can find the up-to-date fixtures on our official website. We are looking forward to another good game today and hopefully we can bounce back in style and get another three points on the board. Thanks for your support and enjoy the game, Pat O’Sullivan.
