Comparison of Approaches to Achieve Sustainability through Selecting of Materials between Phase 1 & Phase 2 in Belum Rainforest Resort
SIGNIFICANTS Sustainable architecture is very important in this century as there are problems of limited natural resources and global warming. It is fundamental for architects to take sustainability as a basic of their design in today’s development. Sustainable architecture is not a product, but an attitude, a path towards the harmony between the living place of people and our mother nature. The underlying concept is to reduce environmental impacts and utilize global resources while still having development. Every sustainable materials have their own potential in sustainability depends on the conditions of the site and the sustainable design strategy by the architects. Thus, this research paper has been conducted to compare the effectiveness of materials used in achieving sustainability in two different phases of Belum Rainforest Resort.
CONCEPT MAPPING
QUESTIONS -
What are the selection of materials in phase 1 and phase 2 in Belum Rainforest Resort?
-
How do the selected materials help in achieving sustainability in different approach?
-
Which one is more effective in achieving sustainability?
OBJECTIVES -
Introduction to sustainable materials which are implemented in Belum Rainforest Resort.
-
Introduction of the approaches to achieve sustainability by selecting materials in Phase 1 & 2.
-
Effectiveness of selected materials in achieving sustainability in Belum Rainforest Resort.
RESEARCH METHODS -
Pictures to be taken after observation
-
Data collection through documentary analysis and thesis paper
-
Chart, diagrams & figures of data through thesis, books and surfing
-
Personal observation and analysis on site
-
Interviewing the people on site
FINDINGS -
-
Types of material in Belum Rainforest Resort were
The selected materials have different approaches on achieving sustainability through their properties -
Quality, embodied eneregy, durability, bio-degradable, recycable and the environental impact of the materials
ANALYSIS -
Bamboo Wall
-
Long life span, fast growing rate, strength and durability, affordability, approach in achieving sustainability
-
Low embodied energy, construction progress of bamboo
-
Area located in Belum RainForest
ANALYSIS -
Rammed earth
-
Short life span, local available always, strong enough for use domestic building, affordability, approach in achieving sustainability
-
Low embodied energy, construction progress of rammed earth
-
Area located in Belum RainForest
RESULT -
Local materials and with minimum precessing are selected as building materials to achieve and promote sustainability
-
Embodied energy and durability of material affects the life span of a building, as the longer life span of a material, the less relative impact as well
-
The effectivenss of achieving sustainability with different materials in different phases are likely to be similar in Belum Rainforest Resort
CONCLUSION The study of this paper is to compare the sustainable materials in Belum Rainforest Resort in order to further observe their further potential in sustainability and to learn how do they promote sustainability. Various aspects are investigated through researching after analyzing through observation. A deeper analysis in this paper will able to see the effectiveness of materials in achieving sustainability in two different phase of the site in terms of promoting sustainable architecture, the importance of harmonious connection between human and nature. Throughout the paper, in depth research of individual materials will be carried out, so knowledge of environmental impact, carbon produced by a material, embodied energy, materials’ properties and more will be obtained. Hence, this research paper will be a relevant reference for architects in selecting building materials for their design.
FUTURE RESEARCH -
What are the other strategies to achieve sustainability other than selections of materials?
-
What are the methods of renewing the building materials after their life span?
-
What are the design ideas or adaptations that affects the sustainability of a building?

This book faces up to the impacts of making materials in the 21st century. By providing an evidence-based vision of change, this book can play a significant role in influencing our energy future.
