BOISE URBAN REVITALIZATION Project Name: Boise Location: Bench, Boise, Idaho Projection Type: Group Studio Practice Individual Work: Concept input, Inventory Maps, Concept plan, Modeling .

Boise’s Central Bench Neighborhood has in recent years reached a state of decline as the Post-War industrial era has come to an end. Although fragmented in character, the fragments left over from bygone years offer the opportunity to revitalize the area. Our vision is to establish the Central Bench as a new town center for Boise, one in which a new sense of place and community is found. The existing rail corridors will form the backbone of this new town center by being transformed into a light rail system. This transit system will be ankled by new mixed-use areas and open spaces, all interconnected to each other and to the surrounding neighborhoods. The Central Bench needs established families to stay in this community, and by revitalizing the existing commercial corridor, adding needed community amenities and services, implementing new job centers, and creating affordable housing options, this important demographic will desire to stay for a long time. Our vision is to create a vibrant, interconnected community in which people live, work, and play.

The loose perimeter for the project area is between the East and West roads Franklin and Irving, and the North-South roads Hartman and Orchard. The site is located within the area of Boise known as the Central Bench. The Bench sits on an elevation approximately 60 feet (18 m) higher than downtown Boise to its northeast. Some of the major areas of influence and significance surrounding the site are two high schools (Boise High School and Bishop Kelly High School), Boise Mall, and the Boise Cemetery.

BOISE IS THE CITY OF TREES. URBAN DEVELOPMENT AND GREEN INITIATIVES ARE WIDESPREAD.

BUT

Area of Focus

The Urban Canopy is Decreasing.

AND

The Urban Infrastructure is Degrading.

SO

The Urban Infrastructure Must Be Revitalized.

THEN

People will use the boise bench.

As we found the historical background of the place and the unique areas scattered throughout the district we were thrilled to look at a potential area that could highlight what the district has to offer and welcome outsiders to enjoy the surrounding elements that make up the Granary District. As the mixed median idea came to us we found that it was a profound way to meet parking needs as well offer a space for a street festival without having to ask permission to close 9th for an event. With a unique venue being placed on a rail car will allow a historic site to be seen when not in use. When the events begin it will turn into a head turning performance area that will in hopes attract many different types of users. The railroad is an important part of the areas history and character. There is no plan in place to lose that authenticity!

There are large area of empty lots in front of warehouse, which were only occupied as parking. In the redevelop plan, this area will provide group seating as a place to gather people, while enjoy the festival event and art.

The Plaza is design to be the space where people can enjoy art exhibitation and festival event. The plaza would contain the repurposed railroad area, which could be event space.

Parks is an important role in human life. Accessibility of urban park is important indicator in green space system. These maps and data are generated by ArcGIS. Take the parks in Cache Valley as the centers, and establish buffers by the distance of 0.25 miles, which is recognized as an acceptable walking distance in people’s daily lives. Based on the buffer, we generated five different maps and charts to compare the park service accessibility, which are the total population in cache valley, Age under 14 and above 60, minority and low income families inside the buffer.
