project one RESPONSIVE ARCHITECTURE

INTRODUCTION Operative Design extends the focus from surface to colume. Volumetric spatial operations, similar to surface manipulations, present a platform upon which to begin the design process. Conditional Design translates scale through three basic architectural elements: vertical circulation, apertures, and site. These three elements are each fundamental to architecture in that they inherently connect constructed space back to the individual experiencing it. In essence, all three are about connection – connection within spaces, connection from within a space without, and connection between a space and its surrounding site. The starting of Design Studio 3, our studio explores operative and volumetric spatial operations and interactions starting a series of spatial formation condition, and how these volumetric manipulations would result different quality and perception of space. We started with the play of 5 spatial operations

[FOLD] [ENVELOP] [DICE] [PLUG-IN] [CARVE-OUT] With the chosen condition, we are to search an object / product / phenomenon that could relate to it, and then provide a general analysis on how would these keywords help to provide a better use of this project.

an object / product / phenomenon

TASK 01 A Find an object / product / phenomenon that relate to this spatial operation. Analyse this object to understand how with this volumetric manipulation, this object shall result in a new function and value. Then produce a creative image of this object to show its main idea (visual collage) and follow with diagrammatic info graphic to show how spatial operation is relate to this object. Main question you need to tackle in this exercise : How this object form with the spatial condition? How does spatial formation make sense of this object, transformed or makes it better? How does the spatial operation manipulate the usage of the object? E.g. Does it manipulate the way it moves? Does it manipulate the way it contains?

precedent studies

TASK 01 B Based on the research on spatial operation for the object, find 3 architectural precedent studies to relate to your data and drawing, discuss and choose ONE for your spatial exploration Precedent Study Criteria : Public or Partial Public Building Building accommodating est. 20-100 users at one time Double Storey and above Able to acquire sufficient spatial information (Site plan, layout plans, sections, elevations, axonometric, etc.) As a group, produce a series of architectural diagram and model of the selected precedent studies, analysing spatial operation & condition, and investigate the formal and spatial characteristic of each work to illustrate and communicate architectural spatial qualities.

INTRODUCTION UCSI KUALA LUMPUR CAMPUS

This UCSI KL Campus situated in Cheras, south-east of downtown Kuala Lumpur, on a 20-acres topographic piece of land. The campus consist a total of 7 blocks that could accommodate student population of more than 15,000 housing different activities ranging from academic and educational to leisure, sports and residential hall. With the number of students growing rapidly every year, the campus is constantly expanding within its master plan to accommodate more activities and programme. The campus now housing around 11 different faculties and schools facilitated with different spatial requirements to run various academic courses from pre-university foundation to doctorate programme. The academic blocks consist of classrooms, studios, laboratories, workshops and staff rooms. Moreover, the campus was equipped with shared facilities such as library, auditoriums, recitation hall, multi-purpose halls, sports facilities, student centres and resource centres. The campus also was planned along with student accommodations, car parks and various commercial services. These joint facilities had created a sustainable community within its boundary. Within these 20-acres of land, there are still a 45% of slope topographic areas filled with greeneries left for future development that opens up different possibilities. By carrying out an extensive site analysis, student could establish design parameters and architectural strategies responding to this site in following assignment.

project two B ADAPTATION TO CONTEXT

INTRODUCTION “We borrow from nature the space upon which we build.” Tadao Ando “If you’re lucky, and a building succeeds, the real product has many more dimensions than you can ever imagine. You have the sun, the light, the rain, the birds, the feel.” Peter Zumthor

With the explorative actions from Project 1 and findings from Project 2A, this project set as a testing ground of contextual architecture. To seek for architectural strategies that respond to the surrounding context, adaptation to the natural and built environment. Within the rich context, architecture supposed to response to the surroundings than being an entity in itself. The art of building is not only forms and shapes but to look at how to design a building that adapts to the topography of site through its depths, how to create space that allow you to experience the environment, how to design for the present with awareness from the past.

site model + responsive massing models

TASK 02 B Create with casting FIVE (5) responsive massing model using the chosen action from project 1 and test it out on your site model from task A. Carefully consider the following strategies - accessibility and axis - scale and proportion - relationship between internal and exterior - the sun path, light and shadow - wind and rain direction - spatial quality and experience Montage each of your formation strategies onto your casted model .

CO_(SPACE)

INTRODUCTION By now you should have settled well into life as a student at UCSI. You might have some thoughts on certain student culture that are enjoyable and beneficial and others that you would like to see improvements. In this project, you will have the opportunity to develop a socially and culturally grounded proposal and are expected to perform various handmade techniques to communicate design strategy and visualize architectural design and ideas. In Project 3 we continue our exploration at USCI KL Campus with our design intervention of a community space that is Co_(Space) by integrating the studies we have conducted in Project 2 - understanding site context and overlapping activities and timing of multiple users. This assignment will explore the fundamental part of the design process: identifying and utilizing the basic elements of a place – the Genius Loci. This will be the foundation upon which to respond to sites in both their perceptual directness and physical constraints and opportunities. You are expected to develop your own design process and technical skills with greater self assurance and individuality, as well as articulate ideas with greater clarity and conviction. Design is not about beautifying an object but to observe, analyse and understand the underlying issue, solve the problem with creativity.

common ground

TASK 03

The Co_(Space) shall provide communal spaces for activities of up to 20 users based on the needs of the student community. Through your research and observation identify common concerns and interests that you would like to address in your architectural intervention. These issues could be existing problems faced by students or suggestions on how to add value to sense of community and student experience in campus. Take your two profiled users as the representative from the target future user group for your communal facility. 6 students - 3 from each discipline - from this target group will be co-living in this Co_(Space). The design parameters of this communal facility shall be the following: • Built-up Area | Approximately 350 to 400m2 • Building Setback | 6m at boundaries directly abutting existing road or 3m at all other boundaries • Accommodation | Indoor 30% Services & Circulation | foyer, toilets, storage, utilities, etc. 10% Office & Management | facility management office, etc. 30% Transformative Communal Living Space | beds, lounge, dining, kitchenette, etc. 30% Transformative Communal Working Space | student activity area, discussion area, multimedia rooms, etc. 30-60% Transformative Student Activities & Event Space Outdoor Outdoor urban garden, outdoor activity areas, festival event spaces, linkages etc. • Height | 2 storeys • Capacity | 20 users, inclusive of 6 student residents • Parking | 4 dedicated parking spaces inclusive of 1 disabled parking.

CO_Mmunity • 乐 “Designed for students of Classical and Contemporary Course from building on site. Associated with the concept of bringing joy and nature to the community with music, the intention is to create interesting circulation and spaces for users to explore, which evidently

concept mainly focuses on tackling user’s stress by engaging them with nature through biophilia that helps them to relax while having fun studying. The main goal is that user’s would have a forest retreat experience as to change the aspect of typical university life.”
