“Real World 101” Provided Educational Experience at NALJA Show A component of this summer’s NALJA show in Des Moines, Iowa was a special tour for 224 breeders and their families to view what our product looks like hanging and packaged for retail sale. This project and the resulting viewing by our NALF and NALJA members, was triggered by a 1976 demonstration sponsored by the Iowa Limousin Association and Iowa State University in which two animals, a Limousin and an Angus were harvested, frozen in a standing position and cross sectioned to emphasize the differences in muscling and fat deposition. This display highlighted the carcass attributes of the Limousin breed and today’s project was initiated in an attempt to recreate the same industry buzz. Four busloads of NALJA attendees traveled to Iowa State University (ISU) in Ames, IA July 12, 2012 to view and learn about the process of evaluating and figuring actual profit or loss of finished steers going into the retail market. Wulf Cattle of Morris, MN supplied three steers that were part of a research project at the University of Minnesota. The Angus, Lim-Flex and Limousin steers were harvested and processed by the Iowa State Univer-

sity staff and comprehensive data was gathered on their carcasses along with the feed intake and efficiencies from the Minnesota research trials. One side of each carcass was available for viewing in the cooler at Iowa State and the group donned appropriate garments and went into the cooler. Dr. Brad Skaar explained how the rib-eye was measured between the 12th and 13th rib and explained the differences in marbling between the carcasses. After viewing the hanging carcass, the group was escorted into the fabrication room to see the product of the other half of the carcass packaged and packed in bulk for retail cutting and sale.

Dr Steve Lonergan, ISU Meat Scientist talked about the process and pointed out the significant differences displayed between the three animals. The third module of the tour stop was the data interpretation by Dr. Stephanie Hanson of Iowa State University and Dr. Grant Crawford of the University of Minnesota. Dr. Hansen is the Iowa State director of the National Program for Genetic Improvement of Feed Efficiency in Beef Cattle, a project involving a consortium of scientists and industry partners in an attempt to better define and identify animals with superior feeding efficiencies. This project has the ability to more clearly define Limousin’s place in the industry as a 1% improvement in feed efficiency has the same economic impact as a 3 % increase in rate of gain. The three steers in this project had individual feed intakes and efficiencies recorded, which, when combined with carcass value, allowed total profitability to be calculated. While all animals had similar live weights, there were dramatic differences in gains and feed efficiencies. Total costs of gain to reach market weight

showed nearly a $70 advantage to the Lim-Flex steer with similar results for the Limousin steer when compared to the Angus steer. Actual cost of gain for the Limousin steer was $89.09 per hundred pounds of gain, $97.05 for the Lim-Flex and $112.81 for the Angus. While carcass value favored the Angus steer, partially due to a premium assigned to the higher grading carcass, total profitability tipped the scales to the faster gaining, more efficient Limousin and Lim-Flex. One of the dramatic differences displayed with the carcass cutout was the trimmed fat off the Angus carcass

totaled the combined total of fat trimmed off the two Limousin sired animals. It was stated that on average, the yield and efficiency of feed conversion gave Limousin influenced calves a $70 advantage before any quality grade is assigned. A larger, more conclusive five year project is being conducted at Iowa State. The objective is to examine the residual feed intake of approximately 4,000 feedlot cattle of all breeds and measure efficiency across breeds. The results will be shared with the beef industry. Dr. Hanson felt that with the natural efficiency of Limousin,

week. Iowa did an outstanding job raising the money to cover the total cost of the NALJA show. The preparation for the show was beyond anyone’s expectations and Iowa pulled it off with flying colors. Again, Thank You for your commitment to the breed. I also want to thank the Missouri Limousin Breeders Association (MLBA) for their outstanding effort hosting the Heartland Regional show in Springfield June 15-16. It takes a lot of effort to provide for the number of juniors who brought cattle to the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds in Springfield. A total of 138 cattle went through the ring Saturday, June 16. In addition the MLBA hosted their junior field day on the evening of July 15 and invited all junior exhibitors who were there for the Heartland Regional to exhibit in their field day show. A special thank you goes to Ty and Susie Heavin along with Shaun and Brooke Edwards for their outstanding organization and effort to make the Regional a success. We also appreciate the generosity of Ed Pinegar who took a major role in sponsoring the weekend shows at the fairgrounds. Thank you! I know next year’s summer NALJA show to be held in Springfield will be a success with their leadership and support of the MLBA. Please refer to the article titled “Hotels Offer Rates” in this issue. Heartland Members Attend International Event

The 20th International Limousin Congress (ILC) took place in Denmark July 2-10, 2012. Hosted by the Danish Limousin Society, the event was attended by several hundred Limousin breeders, including 138 International delegates from sixteen countries. Representing the United States were South Dakota Heartland board member Robert “Cookie” Nielson and his wife Mary, North Dakota Heartland board member Norma Effertz and her husband, Jerry, and Kansas HLA members Leslie and Corrine Olsen along with their daughter, Carla Mohr. In addition to visiting a number of Limousin farms, the group attended the National Show in Herning – the biggest and most distinguished show in northern Europe where over 200 Limousin animals were on exhibition. They also visited the National Performance Test Station in Alestrup where attendees reviewed information on the Danish performance testing of bull calves. The conference concluded

with a gala dinner in Copenhagen where country representatives presented gifts to the host country. A “torch disk”, created by Limousin breeder Ken Holloway of Oklahoma, was presented by Jerry Effertz on behalf of the North American Limousin Foundation. “It was truly an extraordinary trip, viewing Limousin cattle we would not see in the United States, as well as being able to exchange ideas with Limousin breeders from around the word,” stated Jerry Effertz. “I was truly honored to represent the North American Limousin Foundation at such an international event.” The 2014 ILC will be held in Argentina in early November. Carlos Odriozola, president of the Argentine Association of Limousin Breeders showed a short video of Argentina and extended an invitation for all to attend. “Cookie and I had a wonderful time, it was beyond our expectations,” said Mary Nielson. “I am already planning to go to Argentina in 2014.”

Meyer Ranch Receives Commercial Producer Award The Heartland Limousin Association presented a Commercial Producer plaque to Dave and Brenda Meyer of Meyer Ranch, Flasher, ND in recognition of their commitment to the commercial industry in the state of North Dakota. The North Dakota Limousin Association also nominated them for their Commercial Producer of the Year. Flasher is located 50 miles southwest of Bismarck, ND where the AU ratio is 10-1. It requires a lot of pasture to maintain the large cow herd which totals several thousand head between all six ranches operated by Dave and Brenda along with their five sons. Meyer Ranch does not operate the usual commercial program. They calve year round and ship on a weekly basis. They send the calves to various venues including Strauss Veal and natural niche markets. They maintain a sizable herd of Angus cows and use Limousin genetics on the majority of the herd.

Dave and Brenda Meyer.

The ranch represents three generations of their family producing a superior commercial product for the beef industry. Using IMI Global for age and source verification, Meyer Ranch also utilizes the NHTC market and sells to European markets. They qualify for the Global Animal Partnership program which validates their welfare practices and adds

additional premiums. Dave uses 100 percent Limousin bulls as do two of his sons. The other three sons use Limousin and other continental genetics to

cross their cow herd. Meyer Ranch began using Limousin genetics in the late 1990’s, buying their first bulls from Leonard Wulf & Sons. Today, with a total Limousin bull battery, Dave ships his heifer calves to Strauss and feeds steers in partnership with Wulf Cattle. Calving ease tops the list of requirements for Meyer Ranch. Calving year around with a heavier emphasis on later spring calving requires relative worry free birthing by Limousin sired calves. Calving heifers is not an issue as Dave buys 3-5 year-old replacement cows. Growability and performance are also important to them. “Limousin satisfies our priorities”. Congratulations to Meyer Ranch!

sity. The Missouri group was organized by the Missouri Extension Service. The breeding program at Bruner Limousin has always been a performance program, selecting first for the needs of the commercial cattlemen. Their cattle and genetics have been exhibited across the country, but first and foremost they have been the selection for functional cattle with low birth weights and high growth rates. Bruner Limousin has been in the business of raising Limousin cattle since 1973 and added the Dakota Natural Beef to the operation in 2000.

Showmanship winners were Alexa Montage of Elk Point, intermediate champion; Jill Stern of Garden City, senior champion; and Kaley Nolz of Mitchell, reserve senior showman. One group caught their limit of walleye in Green Bay and released back three of the fish that weighed over seven pounds. The smiles on the veterans helped their healing and validated the experience. A large thank you goes to those who generously donated to the project. A special appreciation goes to the state Limousin associations and members of the HLA. The updated order adds Colorado to the list of states with confirmed cases of Vesicular Stomatitis (VS). The original order was for animals from New Mexico. The disease primarily affects horses, cattle, swine and occasionally sheep and goats. Producers who are considering moving livestock from another state into Nebraska need to contact the NDA State Veterinarian’s office to learn about specific import requirements. Nitrate Toxicity May Cause Cattle Losses For the second year in a row, livestock producers are at risk of cattle losses in some fields due to nitrate or prussic acid toxicity, according to Tim Schnakenberg, an agronomy specialist with University of Missouri Extension. “The biggest concern is for pastures that contain sorghum sudan, millet and Johnsongrass. These forages can accumulate nitrate levels during periods of drought, especially after significant amounts of nitrogen fertilizer or poultry litter have been applied to the crop,” said Schnakenberg. In drought situations, fescue tends to go dormant and forages like Johnsongrass may continue to stay lush and desirable to livestock. According to Schnakenberg, the nitrate levels are not only a concern for grazing, but also in hay. Nitrate stays at the same

level in hay as it was the day it was cut. “Excessive nitrates can be poisonous to livestock. Nitrates are converted to nitrites by bacteria in the rumen. If this conversion is interrupted by drought, nitrites can build up and interfere with movement of oxygen through the blood stream and very high levels of nitrate results in asphyxiation. Among bred animals, nitrate accumulation can also lead to abortions,” said Schnakenberg. The danger is not passed even immediately after a rain. It takes at least four to five days following a good soaking rain before nitrate accumulations in forage may drop to a safer level according to Schnakenberg. Under very dry conditions, other crops like corn can have high nitrate levels if high rates of nitrogen are applied. If the corn

was at the best stage for silage, the nitrate level can be reduced during the fermentation period 20-50 percent. If too dry or too wet, it may not reduce as much as expected. Fermentation will take at least 21 days to complete. There is no way to know the nitrate level unless it is tested. Some extension centers are equipped to do a quick test of lower stalks of plants to determine if the nitrate levels are a concern or not. “Nitrates accumulate the most in the lower stalk. If they are a concern, it’s advisable to send a sample to a lab to get a quantitative analysis from several samples containing the entire plant that will be consumed,” said Schnakenberg. The results can help the farmer know how to safely feed dangerous feeds to livestock by dilution and determine what type of cattle should or should not be fed the feed.
