Poor cattle performance can be attributed more to muddy conditions, harsh wind and wet resting areas than to low air temperature. All animal types and sizes must have adequate wind protection, said Zen Miller, University of Wisconsin Extension ag agent. Natural brush offers good protection. Properly designed windbreak fences and open front sheds supply adequate protection but involve a cost. Wind breaks and mounds Wind breaks are very beneficial to helping reduce wind chill on cattle, Miller said in a news release. Recommended spacing between planks is 20-25 percent of plank width. Plank width greater than 10 inches is less effective. Openings over two inches wide are not recommended as too much wind can pass through in one place. Slotted wind-break fences should be 10 feet tall for better wind and snow control. For animals over 600 pounds windbreak fencing and dry resting areas are usually sufficient. Elevated, bedded resting areas are very effective for keeping cattle clean and dry. Bedded mounds should be set away from feeding and watering areas and rectangular shaped. Place mounds so they do not interfere with good pen drainage.

Harsh Weather Affects Cattle Performance

A well-compacted soil base material is essential. The top should be rounded with a minimum height of five feet at the center. Side slopes must be flat enough so cattle can easily walk to the top. Maximum side slopes of 1:4 are recommended. Bedded area requirement should ensure the manure pack continues to generate heat during winter. A 12-to18-inch deep manure pack built up before December will establish a heat source that will continue through the winter. Shelters A shelter’s main purpose is to protect cattle from cold wind, drifting snow, rain and extremely high or low temperature. Natural shelter and cattle hardiness determine the amount of additional shelter required.

Remember the autumn days of October?

All sheds should be open to the south, if possible. The greater the depth of the shed, the better the wind protection for the cattle. Natural ventilation Unheated livestock buildings should not be totally enclosed. Total enclosure allows too much moisture buildup and creates an unhealthy environment. High humidity is a contributing factor to pneumonia and other diseases. Unheated sheds require good natural ventilation to reduce condensation and frost buildup. The open side of shelters should be away from prevailing winter winds and preferably south facing. Air intake and exhaust openings should be provided. The air exhaust slot in the peak of a truss rafter shed should be one inch wide for each 10 feet of building width, with a minimum width of four inches. The exhaust slot should extend the length of the peak except for eight feet at each end. The amount of rain or snow that can enter through this slot is insignificant. Environmental cold stress Adjustments to energy intake must be made to cope with winter conditions. A practical rule of thumb is to increase energy intake by one percent for each degree of Continued on page 3.

I want to thank them for their friendship and commitment that they made to the Limousin circle of friends. The devastating October storm that struck in western South Dakota is still wrecking havoc as cleanup has been slow and tedious. We want to keep them in our thoughts and prayers as the ranchers work to return to normal living situation. I hope to see a lot of you at Denver for the National Western Stock Show. Exhibitors spend a great deal of time and money bringing their best cattle to display and show. I know it will be well worth the time spent to make that commitment to attend the National Western Stock Show. I also want to personally invite all of you to the Heartland Limousin Association Banquet and Benefit auction February 11, 2014 held in conjunction with the Iowa Beef Expo in Des Moines. There will be no charge for the Banquet supper. It always has been a great time! See you down the road and have a safe, healthy, and prosperous 2014.

“Back in Time” Do You Know the Answer? For this issue of Back in Time, I am honoring long-time Missouri Limousin breeders Tom and Rosalie Smith, Arator Valley Limousin of Smithton. They will be making a major life change in February, moving from the farm into town. I thought you might enjoy this picture and the historical facts. Bev Summerbell Do you know the answers to these questions? 1.) What year did Rosalie serve as president of the Limouselles? 2.) Tom and Rosalie were presented with a highly coveted award in 1987. Can you name it? 3.) What is the name of the

award given every year to a MLBA member or family in honor of Tom and Rosalie? Answers on page 12.

Vol. 22 • Issue 1 • Jan/Feb 2014

By: Bev Summerbell

Thanksgiving and Christmas are holidays that are celebrated with family and friends, reflecting on the past, and looking toward the future. As the new year approaches, it is fun to reminisce as well as look into the “crystal ball”. It doesn’t seem possible that we retired from our first profession after 34 years of teaching and have been with the Heartland Limousin Association for 12 ½ years. Where does the time go? Speaking of time, in another year Dean and I will celebrate our 50 th wedding anniversary (April 11, 2015). It seems like only yesterday that we exchanged vows at the Presbyterian Church in Worthington, MN. During

that time we have lived in Sioux City, IA; Wahoo, NE; and several towns in the northern suburbs of the Twin Cities; have raised two sons, Scott and Mike, welcomed two wonderful daughters-in-law, Teresa and Sarah along with four beautiful granddaughters; Erin, Annika, Grace and Mackenzie. Member News Get well wishes are sent to Jim Watts of Fairfield, NE who is recovering from rotator cuff surgery. Jerry Meek of Parker, KS spent a week in the hospital with severe dehydration and other complications. We are happy to report that both of these Limousin breeders are doing much better following their stays in the hospital. Our thoughts are with Mike Christie of Baldwin, KS who is

continuing with treatments following surgery. We wish him well as he recovers. We are also thinking about longtime Limousin breeders Tom and Rosalie Smith of Smithton, MO. We hope that they are able to adjust to their new lifestyle following their move off the farm. We want to wish Ed Bergler, Cripple Creek Cattle Co. of Dakota, MN a speedy recovery. He had back surgery December 26.

Please contact Gerald Gustafson, NLA president at 402/3808061 or any member of the board of directors for additional information. Items are needed for the auction!
