• Individual Animal Feed Efficiency Data ( RFI ) As leaders in the field of testing for feed efficiency, this is our 11th consecutive year of measuring individual animal Residual Feed Intake (RFI) or Net Feed Efficiency and Straight Feed Conversion. All R&R bulls have individual animal net feed efficiency and straight feed conversion data. This is also our 7th year for testing our complete heifer crop. • All Long Yearlings Virile bulls ready to cover lots of ground. They were “coasted” through their first winter, you can treat them rougher than spring yearling calves, and are slowly developed with lots of exercise plus they haven’t seen as much feed as full two year olds elsewhere. They aren’t picked over. • Performance Tested, Carcass Ultrasound Measured More years of data in more traits than anyone in the Canadian Limousin business. • Board until April 1. We’ll care for your purchases for a nominal $3 per day. We suggest you purchase insurance, though. • Delivery assistance. You tell us when and where you want them, and we’ll get it done for you. Don’t worry - we’ll do the legwork and get your bulls home at the lowest cost possible. • Guaranteed homozygous polled bulls. Most are homozygous polled. Homozygous polled cattle will genetically dehorn every calf, even from horned cows. • Easy calving identified bloodlines. We know what our bulls, their siblings and their cow families have done in the past - no unpleasant surprises. • Guaranteed homozygous black bulls. We’ve designed them and paid the tab to DNA test them so you’ll be guaranteed a uniform all-black calf crop from non-diluter red or black cows. DNA tests that were requested to confirm were done at GeneSeek. Our bulls are free of the spotting and diluter genes. • None Held Back All our bulls are offered, with everyone getting fair chance to own them. None pre-sold, none consigned to other events, and none held back for only our own use. • Proven Sire Groups Not only do we have sire groups, but there are also other sets of closely related bulls to sire uniform calf crops in multiple bull cow herds. • DNA Marker Testing for Leptin, Tenderness, Marbling, and other Carcass Traits. Several sires, dams, plus all our sale bulls for the past 11 years have had DNA Marker Profiles done helping us identify indicators of superior genetics for these carcass and meat quality traits.

Welcome from R & R

Thanks for inquiring about R & R Acres and welcome to our 14th Annual “Beefmaker” Bull Sale. By looking through this catalog you will get a pretty good idea of our program and the individual bulls offered. Every animal in our cow herd and calf crop are measured for 18 traits in the process to decide where it may fit in the plan. Use the data. Information is power. The genetic part of the beef business is too slow and costly to make mistakes, so use the information to be more assured of progressing your calf crops and future cow herd with the right genetics that do what they are supposed to do. We’ve verified our product with more information than you will find anywhere else. A unique attribute of the R&R Acres’ program is the years of research we’ve done in the quest to identify superior feed efficient beef cattle. We’ve taken a leadership role in sorting the superior feed efficient beef cattle - cattle that will genetically save substantial money for the cow-calf producer and cattle feeder. Use our data to build your cowherd and bull battery to save feed costs year after year by doing nothing more than simply selecting the right proven genetics. Most people think feed efficiency is only a feedlot trait, but in reality it is more importantly a cowherd trait. Superior feed efficient cows (plus their daughters retained in the herd) will keep saving you money on feed and pasture costs 365 days a year, every year, for their 10-15 years of production. In the years ahead we will have even more information available to both help verify our product, and to help you positively identify the bulls and bloodlines that can help your cowherd produce a superior product that is easier to raise, easier to merchandise and one that sells for more money. Even if you don’t need a bull this year, come over to look at our bulls, enjoy a friendly positive atmosphere sale day, and see what might work in your herd now and in the future. Thanks for looking at the R & R cattle - we sincerely appreciate your interest in our event. Randy Bollum

Expanding the R&R Acres’ Program

Randy, Rhonda, Brandon, Kate

We’re pleased to announce we’re moving into an expansion phase for the R&R Acres’ herd. Brady Scott of Eastend, Saskatchewan has purchased a major portion of the R&R Acres’ cowherd to run at his ranch in the short grass country of Southwestern Saskatchewan. Brady is an ambitious young man that is keen about the future of the beef cattle seedstock business. His experience with his Limousin influenced commercial cattle business, plus his expanding Angus herd, gives him an excellent background to contribute to the future joint efforts of R&R Acres and Brady Scott. In the years ahead, the R&R Acres’ Annual “Beefmaker” Bull Sale will contain a larger offering of Angus-based Limousin and Simmental bulls, LimFlex and purebred Angus bulls to supply a wider range of bulls that offer more options to fit what your cowherd needs on a year after year basis. At our R&R location we’ll continue to expand our Beefmaker LimTNR and SimTNR lines where we are further enhancing genetically predictable superior meat tenderness qualities in addition to the other “Beefmaker” and “Milkmaid” traits you’ve come to expect and enjoy. Look forward to even more exciting things and options from the Bollums and Brady Scott.

The Bulls - The Right Kind of Angus +

The Right Kind of Limousin

Get set early looking for bull power - our sale date at the start of the bull buying season always offers some excellent buying opportunities. Bulls will cost more later. Included again are unique, dynamic herd sire prospects, power bulls and several true calving ease bulls. Use the data, or ask me for help to sort the candidates to fit your needs. These bulls will be in condition to work - they are not fed to be showring fat. This set of bulls were on feed efficiency test and gathered their performance data during one of Canada’s worst stretches of horribly cold winter weather, so their gains and feed efficiency numbers just aren’t as tremendously good as in past years. However they are still good compated to industry standards and you can still compare them within this contemporary group. You will notice that these bulls’ yearling carcass ultrasound scans showed excellent % IMF (marbling), especially considering they only caried .05 to .08 inches backfat. On page 10 you’ll see the heifer mates’ exceptional carcass ultrasound data - further proof these bulls are correctly genetically designed to meet the North American beef catttle industry’s demands, now and in the future. -3-

Yearling, Purebred, Black Angus R&R’s Beefmaker SimTender© Line We realize we do not have a large sale offering of summer born long yearling bulls this year, so if you do not get your “wish list” filled in our auction, let us know what you need . We’ll find bulls to fill your requirements. In future years we will offer an expanded line-up of “Beefmaker”© Limousin, LimFlex, Angus, LimTender © and SimTender © genetics - all with more information than anywhere else!

Ultrasound Carcass Data The importance of carcass trait information is becoming more and more important as value based marketing and case-ready beef gain an increasing share of the marketplace. Live animal ultrasound provides an accurate and affordable means of measuring body composition and predicting carcass value without actually killing the animal to get the data. A transducer is placed on the animal’s loin near the 12th and 13th ribs to measure three traits: marbling (% intramuscular fat), backfat thickness and ribeye area. A live weight is also needed. Most research studies report correlations of 70% or higher between live animal ultrasound and actual carcass measurements.

Ribeye area Muscularity is determined by measuring the ribeye muscle in square inches. Ribeye area in this catalog is presented as square inches of ribeye per 100 lbs. liveweight to indicate muscle thickness. Backfat depth Fat thickness at the 12th rib. An indication of fatness, and also of fleshing ability. % Lean Meat Yield Cutability or percentage of lean meat in a carcass is important in marketing carcasses. Marbling (% IMF) Intramuscular fat in the ribeye muscle. Used as a measure in beef quality grading.

Our experienced ultrasound scanner is CUP Certified.

Rod Wendorff Windy Ridge Ultrasound Remember - these bulls and heifers are “coasted” through their first winter so they won’t have as big of measurements for ribeye and marbling as if they had been hard fed.

Residual Feed Intake (RFI) Data Superior genetics can improve profitability of feeders and the cow herd. Why measure feed efficiency? The cost of feed is second only to fixed costs in importance to the profitability of commercial beef operations and 7075% of the total dietary energy cost in beef production is used for maintenance, including maintenance of the dam. In addition, a 5% improvement in feed efficiency could have an economic impact four times greater than a 5% improvement in average daily gain. Defining net feed efficiency Net feed efficiency or net feed intake (NFI) or Residual Feed Intake (RFI) is defined as the difference between an animal’s actual feed intake and its expected feed requirements for maintenance and growth. Thus, it is the variation in feed intake that remains after the requirements for maintenance and growth have been removed. Like a golf score, a lower value is better and indicates an efficient animal. Considerable variation exists between individual animals within breeds or genetic strains in RFI. This infers that substantial progress can be made in RFI or

feed efficiency since the heritability of the trait is approximately 40%. The Test The main purpose is to use this new electronic technology to identify feed efficient breeding bulls. Ultimately we can use this information and superior genetics to also improve the efficiency of the cowherd and feeder cattle in order to reduce unit costs of production. Each pen is fitted with a GrowSafe

System for automatically monitoring individual animal feed intake whenever it comes and goes from the feeder via an eartag button. The R&R Acres’ Cattle With 11 years of data compiled from our entire bull calf crops and 7 years of heifer crops we have identified the superior individuals, sire groups and dams. There is a difference!

Since 2004-2005, the R&R Acres’ bulls are the only full sets of 1 owner bulls in Canada to sell with complete Net Feed Efficiency data and straight feed to gain ratio data.

Performance Tested Long Yearlings

We have planned a management and feeding program to develop our bulls combining a longer growing time period, with a ration designed with bulls’ longevity in mind. We do not creep feed our calves, so we can get a fully accurate assessment of the dam’s milking ability which is reflected in her calf’s weaning weight. Our summer and fall-born bulls are “coasted” through their first year without heavy, hot feed that many bull calves receive elsewhere. They will not have big, fat weaning and yearling weights on paper, but rather receive a lighter ration that allows expression of their growth traits without hurting them. The performance test growing ration (fed in the same typical commercial feedlot environment as you feed your own cattle out in), is a silage based high roughage diet. After the 80 day test period, the bulls were moved to a pasture through the Fall and Winter where they were allowed plenty of exercise. Big round hay bales and a “no-starch” pelleted ration is offered when the grass runs out.We have found this to be ideal to get bulls ready for service, but not overfat. Their heifer mates are on the same plan. These properly developed fall yearling aged bulls will cover more ground than young spring yearlings, and just plain haven’t seen as much feed as most full two year olds.

Our 2015 “Cattle College Bull” - the bull with the best compilation of statistical data. Of about 50 bull calves from our 2013 born group, he hits on all cylinders in addition to being an impressive looking bull. Notice he ranked #3 for % lean meat yield, #7 for ribeye area, and still was #10 for marbling. These superior, valuable carcass traits are added to his 4.99 feed to gain ratio while being tied for #9 in average daily gain sets the picture for ideal feeder cattle that yield a high value carcass. You’ll notice his EPDs across the board verifies his high performance lineage topped off with Docility and Scrotal EPDs in the extreme top of the breed. If that isn’t enough, he DNA tested homozygous favourable for PMCH associated with increased tenderness. A 3/4 sister to lot 1, R&R Milkmaid 26Z, ranked #1 for RFI (Residual Feed Intake) in our 2012 born heifer group plus indexed 114 for yearling weight and 112.4 for ribeye. Here’s the genetic combination of “Jock” and “Lodestar” in a red package. Actual Gestation Length 290 days. We wish to reserve an option to collect semen for in herd use plus an option for Fall use in our herd. -1212

The Canadian Limousin Assocition’s Elite Dam Award Program was revamped in 2010 where it was identified that the traits of importance in terms of high producing cows were birth weight, weaning weight, milk production and docility. The ideal female is described as one that calves every year without assistance, weans a big calf thanks to her high milk production and possesses a temperament that makes her pleasant to work with. Criteria are as follow: • All fullblood, purebred, or percentage registered Limousin females on Whole Herd Enrolment are eligible. • Must have raised at least 4 calves in the last 6 consecutive years. If the female raised 6 calves in 6 years, she receives the “Super Elite” status. • Must have above breed average EPD for Weaning Weight, Milk and Docility. • Must have below breed average EPD for Birth Weight.

Now, with continued high grain and forage costs, are you interested in Feed Conversion?

Individual Animal Feed Efficiency Testing

The fourteenth group of bulls completes test.

The data is in for the fourteenth set of R & R Acres’ bulls to complete the individual animal feed efficiency trial. All the 2013 born R&R Acres’ heifers retained for replacements were also feed efficiency tested again this year. Measuring individual animal feed efficiency is a relatively rare occurance because of the difficulty in accurately and cost effectively measuring daily feed intake of each animal. By using the feeding bunks and electronic system developed by GrowSafe Systems, continual 24 hour a day monitoring of each cattle’s feed consumption is recorded for a 70 day plus trial period. The first set of bulls to use the new machines at Cattleland started their test November 10, 2004 that ran through February 3, 2005. There were several breeds of bulls going through this first round to gather information as to their ability to convert feed to pounds of gain. Bulls were also ultrasound measured for carcass traits upon completion of test. Since then, the R&R Acres’ bulls and females have had individual animal feed efficiency tests done on the whole calf crop to get an accurate measure on the

whole group. Why measure feed efficiency? The cost of feed is second only to fixed costs in importance to the profitability of commercial beef operations and 70-75% of the total dietary energy cost in beef production is used for maintenance, including maintenance of the dam. In addition, a 5% improvement in feed efficiency could have an economic impact four times greater than a 5% improvement in average daily gain. Defining residual feed intake Net feed efficiency or net feed intake (NFI) or residual feed intake (RFI) is defined as the difference between an animal's actual feed intake and its expected feed requirements for maintenance and growth. Thus, it is the variation in feed intake that remains after the requirements for maintenance and growth have been removed. Like a golf score, a lower value is better and indicates an efficient animal. Considerable variation exists between individual animals within breeds or genetic strains in RFI. This infers that substantial progress can be made in RFI or feed efficiency since the heritability of the trait is approximately 40%. -2424

The trial The main purpose of this trial is to identify feed efficient breeding cattle. Ultimately the efficiency of the cow herd and feeder cattle can be improved to reduce unit costs of production. The R & R bulls R & R Acres is the only bull supplier in Canada that has tested their entire bull calf crops for Net Feed Efficiency for the last 11 years in a row. Using Feed Efficiency Data Use individual animal feed efficiency data in the selection process for purchasing your breeding stock. Dramatic cost savings can be gained with this moderately heritable trait in the feedlot cattle, as well as in the cow herd.

Feed Efficiency is Really A Cow Herd Trait ...not just a feedlot trait.

SCR 2A

unregistered

Actual Gestation Length not available. Lot 20 was raised at Skull Creek so he was not in the contemporary group to get performance and feed efficiency data. Notice his hefty weaning weight - raised from a first calf heifer that did a tremendous job. Halter broke. Super nice disposition. His sire is a son of the tremendous well proven, calving ease Angus bull, SAV Final Answer 0035.

Using EPDs (Expected Progeny Differences)

{ {

EPD Accuracy

Example: BW +2.3 (.73)

Expected progeny differences (EPDs) are used to compare the genetic merit of animals in various traits. An EPD predicts the difference in performance of future offspring of a parent, as compared to progeny from other parents, when each are bred to mates of equal value. A Gestation Length EPDs (GL) or (GEST) Calculated from breeding and calving date information. Expressed in days. Low gestation EPDs indicate genetics for shorter average gestation lengths of offspring. Advantages could be 1) an increase in post partum time interval and thus improved rebreeding performance; 2) decreased birthweight and improved calving ease 3) increased actual weaning weight because of increased age of calf. B. Birth Weight EPDs (BW) Expressed in pounds of calf weight at birth. Lower EPDs indicate less birthweight in progeny. C. Weaning Weight EPDs (WW) D. Yearling Weight EPDs (YW) Both are expressed in expected added pounds of calf at 205 days of age and 365 days of age, respectively. E. Milking Ability EPDs (MILK) or (MA) A sire’s milk EPD is expressed as the additional pounds of weaning weight of calves from daughters, due to genes for milk passed on from the sire to his daughters. F. Scrotal Circumference EPDs (SC) Expressed in centimeters (cm.), with higher values indicating genes for larger yearling scrotal circumferences of sons. G. Docility EPDs (DOC) Higher EPD values indicate genetics for higher docility (calmer behavior) H. Carcass Weight EPDs (CW) Expressed in pounds of carcass weight of progeny. I. Ribeye Area EPDs (REA) Expressed in square inches of ribeye area in progeny. A common, well accepted measure of muscularity in a carcass is a measure of the loin muscle (ribeye) between the 12th and 13th rib. J. Back Fat Thickness EPDs (FAT) Inches of fat cover over the loin measured between the 12 and 13th ribs. K. Marbling Score EPDs (MARB) The marbling score EPD is expressed in units of numeric marbling score, with higher values indicating genes for greater deposition of intramuscular fat, or higher expected marbling score and higher USDA or Canada quality grade. L. Calving Ease Direct EPD (CED) Calving ease of this animal’s progeny in % unassisted births. Higher is better. M. Calving Ease Maternal EPD (CEM) Calving ease of daughters in % unassisted births. Higher is better. N. Post Weaning Gain (PWG) Rate of gain between weaning and yearling in pounds. O. Stayability (STAY) Ability of cows to stay producing more years in the herd as % probability. Accuracy: What does it mean and how to use it? Accuracy is a measure of the reliability associated with an EPD designated by a numeric value which ranges from 0 to 1.0. Accuracy indicates the type and amount of performance information which was used to calculate the EPD. Accuracies defined as (P) indicates that the animal’s EPD is only an average of its two parents’ EPDs for that trait. The higher the number (accuracy) figure, the more accurate the trait measured should be. All EPDs in this catalog are current Spring 2015 information. Sale Terms and Conditions

The terms and conditions of the sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and the seller and be equally binding on both parties. Animals resold following purchase in this sale shall constitute a separate transaction and the rights and obligations of the two parties connected thereto are not covered by the terms and conditions of this sale.

• Announcements

Announcements from the block shall take precedence over printed material in the catalogue. Buyers are therefore cautioned to pay attention to any such announcements.

• Bidding

Animals will be sold singly or in lots to the highest bidder. Bidding will be carried out in Canadian dollars.

• Auctioneer

The auctioneer will settle any disputes as to bids, and his decision on such matters will be final. The auctioneer shall have the right to refuse bids from anyone who has a previous record of default in payment of who has not made proper credit clearance with the Sale Management prior to the sale.

• Risk

Cattle are at the risk of the buyer as soon as they are sold.

• Terms

Terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable at par at sale time. Current rate of exchange as of sale day will apply to purchases made by U.S. buyers. Parties unknown to the sales manager desiring to settle by personal cheque, should bring a letter of identification from their bankers. Right of property shall not pass until full settlement is made. Sales management reserve the right to require a certified cheque as settlement before releasing any sale cattle. Should any buyer fail to settle for his purchases or defaults in any manner, sales management reserves full power to resell the animal to the best advantage either publicly or privately without further notice. Any loss arising from such resale together with keep and all other expenses incurred shall be payable by the defaulter. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released.

• Breeder Guarantee

Should any bull 14 months of age or over fail to prove a breeder after being used on cows known to be breeders, the matter shall be reported in writing to the seller within six months following date of purchase. The seller will then have the right and privilege of six months to prove the bull a breeder. No guarantee is given that the semen collected from the bull will freeze.

• Settlement of Guarantee

Transportation charges on animals returned to the seller are for the account of the buyer. No incidental expenses such as feed, care, A.I., signing fees, interest, veterinary charges, etc. will be charged by either party when making settlement. If the seller is successful in proving the animal in question to be a breeder, then said animal must be reclaimed by the buyer at his or her expense. Should the seller fail to prove the animal a breeder, the buyer is guaranteed a satisfactory replacement, F.O.B. ranch or location of origin, or equal value as credit in a future sale. In no event shall the seller be responsible for more than the original purchase price.

• Soliciting

Promoting the sale of cattle, other than those in the sale, is frowned upon and considered an unethical practice during any sale.

• Accidents

Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither sales management, auctioneer nor the owner assumes any responsibility in these matters and disclaims any liability legal or otherwise in the event of accident or loss of property.

• Announcements

INSURANCE - Insurance will be available. MAIL BIDS - Mail or wire bids may be furnished in confidential form. Bids should be in the hands of the sales staff as long as possible prior to the time of the sale.

• Registration Papers

Each animal will carry papers issued by the CLA or NALF. Proper certificates issued by the Association will be furnished in the name of the new owner upon request.

Top Ranking Bulls In Economically Important Traits 2015 Sale Bulls This year’s bulls were moved to a native grass pasture at Brady Scott’s after they completed their 90 day performance and feed efficiency test where they have received free choice hay plus 10 lbs. light grain ration through the fall, then went on self feed hay plus a “pelleted” complete mixed ration that had no barley or corn which is best for their guts and feet. This allowed plenty of exercise for proper bull development. Our aim is to do all we can to extend their longevity.

Bulls will register at least a full degree less marbling than steers of the same age, genetics and feeding history. Remember, these R&R bulls and heifers have been “coasted” through their first winter and have not seen heavy feed to increase their marbling depositions.
