A LETTER FROM THE Executive Secretary Hello Friends and fellow Limousin enthusiasts, “What a difference a year makes.” That’s the phrase I kept hearing over and over at the TLA’s Texas Best Sale in Wichita Falls. Last year the countryside was plagued with wild fires, high winds, and a record setting drought. This year saw picture perfect weather, abundant grass, and an enthusiastic crowd of bidders. While circumstances may change, one thing remains constant, our association will persevere. That is because of good people who care for each other and the breed of cattle they chose to raise. In this issue is a testimony from a daughter about her father and the times spent together as a family going to Limousin sales, Junior Nationals, and Field Days. While it surely is a testament about a good man, it is also a testament about a valuable program. Many of you have fond memories of times spent hauling to livestock shows across Texas and beyond with your families. Sometimes it was scorching hot or bitter cold, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but at the end of the day you are ready to pack up and go again. I’m not sure who said it, but I have heard of the Field Day and Junior Nationals referred to as a “Limousin Family Reunion.” I hope you will take time to attend the TLA’s family reunion at the TJLA Field Day and heifer show in Levelland June 1-3, you will be glad you did. Speaking of change, you may have noticed a change in the format of the TLA News, we hope you like it. The TLA News is the voice of our association and is supported solely by its advertisers. Well over 2,000 copies are sent to cattlemen, agriculture science teachers, county extension agents, and prospective customers in several states. If you are not presently advertising in the TLA News, we invite you to contact the TLA office, ads can be tailored to fit any budget. Sincerely,
Ralph

A tribute to Steve Shields
by Becky Hardin
O
n the outside, Steve Shields looked like a serious guy. In fact, most of his kids’ friends were intimidated by him at first. But once you got passed that, you found a warm, funny man who would go out of his way to help you. He shared his knowledge and took the time to learn something from you. He had a passion for excellence in everything he did. Every decision Steve made was planned with the utmost precision – so not surprising – he drove 22 hours to Moultrie, Georgia, to buy the first Limousin heifers from Louie Perry. It was a trip his girls will never forget, and the first of many long trips revolving around cattle. Steve grew up in the small town of Idalou, Texas. He attended Texas Tech University before moving to Morton, Texas, with his wife Paula in 1979. Steve became actively involved in the community, specifically the agricultural community. He worked in the cotton seed delinting business for more than 25 years and was always on the cutting edge of technology and business practices in a changing agricultural world. He was a member of the Morton Ag Boosters, Cochran County Livestock Association, American Cotton Seed Delinters Association where he held numerous offices, the North American Limousin Foundation, Texas Limousin Association, and First United Methodist Church in Morton. In 1992, Steve and his family established Shields Excel Limousin. He learned firsthand the kind of camaraderie that this organization cherishes the following summer in Jackson, Mississippi, when the family attended their first Junior National Show. People welcomed the family with open arms, showing them the ropes- everything from teaching two young girls how to blow hair the correct way to allowing a 6 foot 5 man stand behind them watching them clip cattle for hours on end. The family learned a lot about cattle that year, but more importantly about life. Steve was a daddy who took his children to the bank and made them ask for a loan to buy their animals; spent hours at night teaching them how to write a check and balance a checkbook or work on record books and then
got up at 5:30 the next morning to take them to feed their cattle before school. Each day, every chore, every stock show Steve taught his children something. If you wanted to see how to make a good bed for your heifer you could check the Shields’ area. You would find that Becky had tried to make beds, but had been banished to walk the cattle while the perfectionists, Steve and Tiffany, finished and made sure that those cattle were sleeping in the Hilton of the show barn. Hours on end were spent drilling kids for the Quiz Bowl, sitting in line all night waiting to unload, watching in the ring all day learning so he could share that knowledge with others, nothing was done halfway. Steve had a passion for excellence. He also had a passion for the Texas Junior Limousin Assocation. Steve was never a member of the TLA Board, he didn’t serve as an officer, but he was there. At numerous stock shows and events, he hauled his family and his cattle for hours on end to different corners of this country. He welcomed people into the fold each year and advocated for the breed. And to what end? Every year FFA, 4-H, TJLA and NALJA send hundreds of smart, wellprepared young men and women out in to the world to make a difference. On September 7, 2011, Steve parted from this life and found excellence in the Lord’s arms. His daughters and his wife who have benefitted and enjoyed this organization so much in their lifetime asked that the field day be held in his memory. Truly this weekend is in honor of every dad in here who has sat in line in a pickup all night, taught their child to shovel manure or clip a calf, gone to every antique store in the county to find something someone needed for Cow Camp at a Junior National Show or sat at the Pep Boys store stranded in a pickup with a blown radiator in the middle of the July heat, on a holiday weekend, with full trailer. You make a difference in the lives of your children, and they in turn, make a difference to others. To every parent out there; thank you for what you do. 9 - TLA | May/June 2012

A Firm Foundation The foundation of our program is built upon an elite group of donors. The combination of Angus, Lim-Flex and Purebred donors allows us the ability to use a wide range of breed-leading sires to produce the kind of cattle that meets the needs of commercial and seedstock producers alike.
SSTO Sentimental 6807S This 50% Lim-Flex is a daughter of our Angus donor, MA CO94 of 875 Sleep Easy, and JCL Lodestar. Sentimental became a donor in her own right for Riverdale Ranch.
BOHI Red Robin BOHI Red Robin combines the great Angus sire, Connealy Lead On, with MAGS Manuela, a top donor for the Magness and Sugar Bush programs. Red Robin’s progeny include MAGS Wahoo, the Champion Lim-Flex of the 2011 National Western junior show for Mark Blake, and MAGS Wazowski, the 2010 and 2011 All-American Futurity Division Champion, now working in the Fuchs Limousin program in Cameron, TX.
LFL Peaches LFL Peaches was the top selling open heifer at the 2012 National Sale in Denver and is a daughter of MAGS Silhouette. We are pleased to be a partner with Lawrence Family Limousin on Silhouette a top producing daughter of BR Midland and MAGS Lady Ace.
SBLX Xtra Special This DHVO Deuce x MAGS Manuela daughter will enter the donor pen at the conclusion of her tremendous show career. Her most recent wins include Grand Champion at the Houston open and junior shows as well as the San Antonio open show.
