RESTRICTION

DESCRIPTION

No restriction

Soils with deep water table that is stable during most of the year. It has a deep effective depth, with moisture udic soil regime and a quite slow external drain, natural effective drainage, no mottling presence

Soils with groundwater table depth from 100 to 150 cm

Temporary restriction

Soils with shallow groundwater table that is stable throughout most of the year. It has a quite shallow effective depth, with aquic moisture regime floor and a quite slow external drain, natural -poorly drained- drainage and medium common size mottling

Soils with groundwater table depth from 3 to 10 cm

Soils, that are usually waterlogged, or in high groundwater levels during most of the year. It has a quite shallow effective depth, with a peroxyacid moisture regime soil and external natural drainage -poorly drained- and a lot of mottling

Waterlogged soils or with a groundwater table depth from 0 to 3 cm

COVERAGE UNITS

RESTRICTION

SUMMARY

1. Open forest

Permanent restriction

Open forest coverage which corresponds to the life zone as the tropical moist forest, with high ecosystem, especially connectivity and habitat for wildlife. It must be excluded from intervention. (14,86%).

2. Fragmented forest

Permanent restriction

Fragmented forest coverage, great importance for its floristic composition with some remaining trees of species such as Carapa guianensis (Tangare) and species of the Otoba genre, species from the Myristicaceae family, which can be considered as fine woods. Like the open forest corresponds to the life zone as tropical rainforest. It must be excluded from the intervention. (0,69%).

3. High secondary vegetation

Temporary restriction

Vegetation cover, in active successional stage, with predominance of fast-growing pioneer species. Intervention is possible (with exploitation permits), excluding individuals from the species Cedrela angustifolia, (cedar) for the Meliaceae family. (14,8%).

4. Low secondary vegetation

Temporary restrictionl

Vegetation cover, in active successional stage, with herbaceous and shrub vegetation types, corresponding to the early stages of plant succession. Management has to be performed in case of intervention, depending on their importance as wildlife habitat. (0,35%).

No restriction

Vegetation cover made up of oil palm cultivation Elaeis guineensis, perennial solitary trunk and pinnate leaves which belong to the Arecaceae family. It may reach heights up to 12 m. Coverage though is restricted to be intervened. Notwithstanding, arboreal individuals that have reached a large size should be excluded from exploitation. (15,6%).

6. Palm crop with natural spaces mosaic

No restriction

Vegetation cover composed by oil palm plantations Elaeis guineensis in combination with natural spaces, the latter being the result of natural regeneration processes that have taken place due to the absence of crop management, developing pioneer species of flora among coverage palm individuals. (0,25%).

6. Wooded pastures

No restriction

Vegetation cover that includes land covered by grasses, which are structured paddocks with presence of trees higher than five meters, distributed in a dispersed form. Coverage without intervention restrictions. (39,2%).

7. Weedy pastures

No restriction

8. Discontinuous urban network

No restriction

5. Palm tree permanent crops

Vegetation cover represented by lands with pastures and weeds forming associations of secondary vegetation. Coverage without intervention restrictions. (13,7%).

Coverage without intervention restrictions. Coverage chart

RESTRICTION

DESCRIPTION

Permanent restriction

There are two important regional elements within the lot and to the eastern edge: the electricity interconnection line and the Tumaco-Pasto main road. According to the official Land Use and Management Plan of Tumaco, any construction within the municipality must comply with 30 meters around electrical networks, and 15 meters from the roads.

Permanent restriction

Based on the work with the campus’ neighboring communities it was possible to identify associated hunting practices of "forest animals". Such practices are settled down in the tradition of local communities, and are important regarding protein intake. Hunting wildlife, especially mammals (Cuniculus paca, deer, rabbit, mouse, Cuniculus taczanowskii), moves in the area through corridors connected to specific habitats. Within the lot the Universidad Nacional de Colombia-Sede Tumaco is possible to find such features and spaces that have an important role in the wildlife hunting ecology within this area.

Permanent restriction

Informal fishing is one of the most important local practices for Universidad Nacional de Colombia-Sede Tumaco those neighboring communities. Local communities identify firstly the Mira River as the space to develop such practices, and secondly, the channels throughout the grounds. The latter, used to handle soil drainage, connected to natural watercourses and the sea, becoming paths and habitats for fauna associated with these environments (turtles, pogona vitticeps, tilapia, and shrimps). Especially, during dry seasons of the year, local communities tend to walk around through the water channels with baskets and collect species for domestic consumption, which is an important diet element of Universidad Nacional de Colombia’s neighbors.

Permanent restriction

The identified forest and jungle within the lot the Universidad Nacional de Colombia - Sede Tumaco, may be important species seed banks of forestry interest, such as tagua palms, trees such as cedar, which are relevant species due to the quality of their wood, seeds, and fruits. Having such species within the University would allow planning to create plant nurseries which will benefit the communities, providing seeds and plants that can be exploited, as well as the ecosystems sector, that involve the loss or decline of individuals of these species according to the intervention degrees.

NA

NA

From the activities undertaken with communities (walks, social mapping, interviews, surveys, direct observation), it was established that high lands are more suitable for agricultural activities and the establishment of buildings and habitation sites. Fully matching with changes in topography expressed by the level curves, communities define these spaces visually as they walk around. These are the primary areas of intervention for farmers, allowing them greater drainage capacity and good quality of soils. In an area with flooding tendencies throughout the year as the plot in Universidad Nacional de Colombia-Sede Tumaco, human activities try to adapt to these conditions and in many cases, to change the constraints imposed by the biogeophysical environment. For the neighbors of the lot, the lower zones represent an obstacle, not impossible to overcome though, they are not to be used for farming or the establishment of residential homes and other kinds of infrastructure.
