PROPOSED DESIGN
ABSTRACT Nature by having special features has positive effects on human’s health and can be a place for restoration from stress. Healing gardens for people who are suffering from stress-related disease is a concept which tries to take advantage of being passive and active in natural space. Creating physical environment that engages itself with nature is the goal of healing place. Creating a space that is relaxing and healing will encourage patients during their recovery. Several theories have evolved to address the question of nature having a “healing” or restorative condition. Restorative experience is associated with nature because of vacations spent in beautiful settings or long childhood summers spent on the beach, or near a lake or stream. The aim of this thesis is to look at the design principles of this kind of healing gardens . This thesis explores types of healing gardens suited for different users: Children, rehabilitation and psychiatric patients as well as the staff and the visitors in the healthcare setting. It addresses the features that need to be included for each user in the healthcare environment, and why different features need to be emphasized for each type of patient. It presents historical information, including prior research, theory and design principles and methods to provide the therapeutic benefits. A set of guidelines for the design of healing gardens is created as a result of research findings.
