Lina Shatara’s passion for jewelry began

at thirteen years old when she began creating pieces for family and friends. Later she would graduate from UC Berkley and accept an unforeseen offer bringing her to New York City. There she would immerse herself in her love of jewelry through formal training at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT). Almost overnight, Lina found herself behind the scenes working on New York Fashion Week, Fashion’s Night Out and fashion shows for brands like Oscar de la Renta, Jeremy Scott, and Cushnie et Ochs before joining the design department at House of Waris. The House of Waris internship prompted Lina to fully launch her namesake brand, Lina Shatara, in 2011. Lina’s love of travel inspired her 2014 collection along with the wealth of visuals (geometric patterns, organic shapes and calligraphy) that boldly influence her designs. Turning sharp yet simplistic pieces into edgy contemporary jewelry has become the DNA of the brand, although not one she is bound to. Every season is about challenging herself creatively. Her use of mixed materials, oxidized metals and matte finishes add elements of surprise to pieces, creating an undeniable unisex appeal. Each piece is hand crafted in Lina Shatara’s San Francisco based studio. Lina is committed to localized and sustainable production, creating every piece domestically.

MAVIA

the inSpiration for the MaVia CoLLeCtion

comes from the movement and fluidity of Arabic calligraphy. I was particularly drawn to the work of calligraphist Hassan Massoudy and artist Bahia Shehab who did a series of work based on the Arabic word “La” or “No” in English. The Mavia pieces were inspired by these works of art. The word “no” can be very empowering, especially for women who under use it in many situations. In Shehab’s work, she emphasized how the use of the word implicates making a stand against injustices in the Arab world. These pieces are meant to make a statement not only visually but to empower the wearer in concept and form.
