Chapter 01

How to recall a city, according to everyone’s specific memory and experience giving different definition. The city gateway usually decides the character and status of the city.

03

Recalling atmosphere 2012, Lukang, Taiwan

However, in Taiwan the status of city becomes obscure because of marketing. Especially, most of traditional city, such as Lukang city. It was an important commercial city in 19 century in Taiwan. Nowadays, this city was developed a culture and tourism city. But the city experience became fragmentary memories and separated symbols. Thus, I tried to re-establish the traditional hiding events and disappearing spaces by these fragmentary memories. I created three indexes to provide backpackers to experience the local culture and activities by living; meanwhile, responding the two sides of people, river, and temple of Lukang city between past and present. 04

The gate of modern city was affected by globalization, city’s entrance distinguishability disappeared because the functional and homogenous airports, harbor, and stations whose were transportation. Therefore people were using fraction of memories to construct the memories of cities as they were traveling in the world. On the other hand, government through replicated similar experience of city fulling of any city in Taiwan;thus, these interior cities were become homogenous pattern. In this kind aspect, city gates and interior would be homogenous and could not be distinguished. The characteristics of cities will become indistinctly in the future.

index_03

Hence, I choose the city, Luckng, it was been one of the popular cities in nineteen century. Through studied and analyzed characteristics and identities of the city to make design strategies and environmental symbiosis. I tried to offer different experience for foreigners to travel this city, and focused on the group of backpackers who were finding the city’s identity and using lack resources to experience a trip life.

05

I established some fraction of signal indexes for backpackers, thus, I through studied and analyzed the histories of Lukang city and then embedded indexes into city connecting these indexes to become the successive experience and memories as they traveled Lukang City. However, the backpackers will see the invisible parts of the city is so impressive.

The early developed from The Ching Dynasty of china, residents built special shelter between two houses and connected them becoming the public ceiling on the street, but in Japanese Occupied Peroid, 1911-1965, Japaneses intened to develop modern transportaion system so destroied the shelter then rebulit the baroque facade on these street. Thus, nowady, residents preserved these meaningful facade.

The eariest Lukang river offered important export trade from China. In Japanese Occupided Period, changing the type of commercial, the funtion of river was replaced by road system which transported most economic resource. Thus, the river lost the capability of trading, but it is becoming a kind of offering religious activitiy in Lukang. However, the Lukang river play differnet role in this city.

Most population immigranted from China, therefore, the religion of Chinese i is a very important event. Moreover, people produced the necessary for cenemoy or festival and then formed the commercial activities. Especially, a lot of store and stand sat up nearby temple, But it changed the origin system of temple, the surron -ding was corwed too muh commercial activities. In order to reconnect the function for this temple square, I rose the elevation of first floor to provide extra space for temple activities. The library sat at second floor for backpackers and residents. Furthermore, theater on the third floor provided the educational function for them.

The harbor of Lukang was established in 1784, was the Taiwan External an important trading port because of the geographic proximity to the introduction of the handicraft skills of Quanzhou. 02 City Resetting _ Taiching City Center

Chapter 02

Compaction Growth of population poses high population density in our city. Disappearing natural environment is inevitable. But, basic living function is quite important. Cities should be developed much more vertical programs to solve this problem for future. In this project, I tried to use the movie’s concept looking for the possible mechanism of city. The purpose is reinforcing city’s appearance and resetting the programs. To place multiple consuming programs of Taichung City’s characteristic to change origin shopping behavior. Through merging programs be able to reflect urban’s environment and the possibility of programing mix-using.

Chapter 03

Mending Today’s society brings our city to grow rapidly. The shape of space changes in the morphology and cultural background usually faces conservation or discarding. When the spatial organization of the city encountered the transform of society structure, it often cannot adapt the change. Therefore, the cities occur the space’s rift. These kind of cracks include memories, functions and identifies in the city. In addition, I tried to find out the different fractures in complex urban; meanwhile, mend these fractured spaces by reconnecting activity. Furthermore, mending mechanism is that the analysis of cultural structure, composition and regional context. Embedding the appropriate functions to reconnected people with space. And thinking about how to establish an unique regional architecture in the urban scale.

Tunghai residential area is typical around the university community, which developed between 1975 to 1985. It is named the specific region of Taichung Harbor. But unfortunately, mass structure cause this area becoming over-crowed and decreasing the quality of life. This site was a popular in 1984, it was discarded ten years age. The reason is that the square of mall was sat far from commercial street. Besides, there are occupied this place. Thus, this area was disordered, scuzzy and unsafe.

41

After observing the environment of Tunghai residential, the facade of building on the street does not so important because of the scale of street. The shop sign replaced the facade of buildings. In addition, students went to campus till night. Therefore, my strategy was reinforcing the light at night to attract the students coming here. Moreover it can increase the safety for the people waiting the bus. Re-structured area became the bright zone for users.

Through this two project , I placed a public space to releases the pressure from the high density buildings in the city. I tried to create the breathing square in the compressed urban. I also focused on the connecting process of transferring from public to privacy in the urban scale.

The site is located between Taichung Industrial Region and Taichung Tech Center of western Taichung. Thus, the form strategy of sport club is considering the symbolize of landmark, and including many different sports function for customers living nearby here. The space strategy is inducing the natural sunlight into interior. Meanwhile, making the interaction of public space and privacy space. Because, the traditional gym in Taichung is usually hided in the basement or without natural sunlight and fresh air. Hence, to create the outdoor space in the high building for people is the main point of view in this case. In addition, using the solar power is another function in this project. The facade combined the solar power plate to create the various shadow to interior, and present the interested facade in this region.

The site is located in the commercial area. The Art Street is the famous tourism spots here. The original function is parking lot. Thus, it breaks the extended business zone. In this project, focus on integrating the public space and privacy one. The mainly programs are eight townhouse of artist, six shops, resident activity center, performing arts, to listen, artist galleries, and including parking lot. The design strategy - created a central square in this site because this area is the sightseeing business districts. As well as the Tunghai University students as on of the main customer groups. Furthermore, I divided three levels for different sort of using people. Each level provides specific function. First level is Basement floor. It includes the exhibition and artists’ studio. Second lever is ground floor. It contains the art shops, public square, residential lobby and parking lot. Last lever is Second floor. Although the ground floor provides for public, the platform in the second floor gives residents have a privacy space for doing activities.
