Summer 2015 Cover Artist, Anna Grace M. Hilton Almost ever since my family and I moved to Lincoln from Little Rock Arkansas, I have been taking art classes from someone. When I was about six, I took art class from Mrs. Balor, a homeschool co-op teacher; I soon became addicted to this form of self expression. I checked out books from the library about art and set up my little art shrine in the basement. However, I was just barely literate at the time (and I thought that all of the books mom had me read were dumb and boring) so in a way I read the pictures, that is, the picture directions of how to draw the artwork. I was so good at analyzing pictures, I didn’t like to read much. That soon changed, however, when I found out that books had the ability of capturing my imagination in an equally interesting way as pictures. Now I love to spend my free time reading excellent literature and creating art. My current teacher, Ms. Tamara Kaye, has provided me great inspiration, as well as causing me to stretch myself by doing art in various mediums. I am the second oldest of the seven children in my family. My parents are Jon and Mary Hilton. I am thankful that my parents, who give me more art supplies than I can use in a lifetime, support my pursuits.

I
f you are on Facebook, like me, you’ve probably received several friendship requests. Since I am a friend of the Lincoln Children’s Zoo, I have a few “new” friends I would like you to know about:
will turn two years old on June 13. Did you know that I have a grayish-white coat with black spots to help blend in with snow and mountains? I also have a really long tail. Mine is almost 3 feet long! I use my long, fluffy tail for balance and to keep my face warm when I sleep! Come meet me at the Zoo!

Let’s Get Unplugged, Lincoln! By Angelina Stovall-Amos, MS, Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department
T
elevisions, computers, phones, tablets, oh my! It seems like today everyone is connected to some kind of screen every day for several hours. Children are said to spend up to seven hours of their day in front of some kind of screen. It is recommended that children only have two hours or less of screen time a day (zero screen time for those under 2 years old). So what’s the big deal? Sometimes parents or caregivers let their children watch television or play video games so they can get things done around the house. We get it. Parents need a breather every now and then; however, the biggest health concern with too much screen time is obesity and harmful advertisements. When more time is spent in front of a screen, less time is spent
Floods, storms and a peasant girl named Ti Moune. Put a little drama in your child’s summer! Screen Free Week May 4th-10th being active. Eating goes along with screen time. We call it “mindless eating” since you are focusing more on the screen instead of how much is going into your mouth. This makes it easier to over eat. Also, think about what kind of ads are shown on TV and apps. Most advertisements directed towards children are sugary snacks and beverages. Decreasing screen time and increasing your family’s activity amount can help lead to a healthier lifestyle. Join the Lincoln community by unplugging from screens during Screen Free Week May 4th-10th. This does not include screen time to complete work and homework. Log onto www.facebook.com/ LetsMoveLNK before May 4th and check out the list of local events and businesses that will be helping families go screen free during this week by offering FREE or REDUCED-PRICED activities. We’ll also be showing you activities you can do at home with your family that are free or low-costing and fun, but don’t stay on too long. Let’s get moving, Lincoln!

to share knowledge and ideas around food, to help one another become more engaged in growing and eating fresh, local produce”, said Ben McShane-Jewell, Crops Community Garden Program Manager. Locally-grown food is beneficial in many ways. The EPA estimates that traditional agricul-
ture now accounts for approximately 8% of our greenhouse emissions, not including transportation emissions. However, someone growing their own food uses almost no fossil fuels and lessens the amount of food needing to be transported across the country. Furthermore, produce eaten directly after harvest retains its nutrients and is therefore much healthier. “I’m so happy they have given me permission for the land, so
that people can actually produce natural, homegrown vegetables that can feed their family...not processed foods”, said Caroline Azoh, a community gardener from Cameroon. Contact: Ben McShane-Jewell, Garden Program Manager at (402) 4749802 or ben@communitycrops.org

Hurray for the Cornhusker State Games! By Gretchen M. Garrison
B
etween July 28th and August 2nd, you may notice a few (thousand) more people about the Capital City. The “State Games of America” will be in town. For 2015, this event is replacing the Cornhusker State Games. Until I attended the CSG opening ceremonies last year, I thought that primarily group events such as basketball or volleyball were involved. When you look at the list of available sports (http:// sga2015.com/SportListing), that is definitely not the case. Even with the weather getting warmer, convincing kids to be outside instead of inside with technology can be a bit a of a challenge. Trying one of these half dozen sports below may be just
the motivation your kids need to be active and moving. Even if you are too late to register for the games (July 1st is the Nebraskan’s d e a d l i n e although some events will fill up before then), you can still have fun later on this summer cheering on other competitors. Plus you will know what you are watching since you have actually tried out the event. Badmitton: Did you know that badmitton is actually considered the fastest racquet sport according to Nebraskabadmitton.org? This sport requires agility and stamina as well. Although most professional matches are played indoors due
to the wind factor, you can easily set up a match in your backyard. (Buying a set of racquets, a shuttlecock and a net is relatively inexpensive!) Disc Golf: Did you know that there is a Professional Disc Golfers Association (PDGA)? And here you thought that frisbee was just a childhood toy. Primarily found at local parks, many courses can be found in Nebraska, including two in Lincoln. Keep a set of discs in the car and stop when you are out and about this summer. Most courses even have the rules posted, but even if you do not completely follow the guidelines your kids will still have a great time flinging away. Fishing: What a great excuse to spend time outdoors! Think you can catch the biggest bass, blue gill or catfish? This one is for you. There also happens to be a team competition available. Not sure you want to invest in the equipment? Check out one of the “Nebraska Game & Parks” free family fishing days throughout the state this summer. They provide the poles – you enjoy the fun.
Foosball: While this sport may not be quite as aerobic, I do think it is still quite competitive. After all, they have a website dedicated to tournaments and play around the state (Nebraskafoosball.com). Tips are also included on how to turn this basement table game into so much more. Pickleball: Having never even heard of this sport, I discovered that it has only been around for the last fifty years. Invented when some players could not find their shuttlecock, a whiffle ball was used instead. As this racquet game is a combination of badmitton and ping pong, you will want to check out the rules at USAPA.org. Although they do play on designated courts, they also explain how you can convert a tennis court into the proper playing surface. Ultimate Frisbee: Think football with a frisbee. Although this may be a competitive for the younger set, kids can practice passing a disc down the field to each other. Practicing hand/eye coordination and communication, by emphasizing the teamwork aspect, a bit of the competitive edge could be taken away. There is a “Nebraska Youth Ultimate” league that has been developed for the younger set. Whatever event you choose, get outdoors and enjoy some family time!

rt for Everyone at LUX Center for the Arts. As I have watched my nephew grow up, I have learned that skills like walking and jumping seem to appear overnight. He can already throw a ball and play tag; but like most toddlers, he struggles to do things like keep his paint brush on the page. Fine motor skills should be nurtured early on as they support other vital physical and mental skills. Making a clay pot, for instance, involves not just rolling out coils of clay, but planning the techniques required to make the desired shape. Knowing the benefits of working with clay at an early age, we decided to begin our own class specifically for kids ages 2-5. The class will be offered once a month on Saturdays (June 20, July 18, August 8, and into the fall) from 9-9:45 a.m.
Lincoln Kids!
Your kids will get to play with clay and can choose to make a finished project that will be painted that same morning or just get messy and have fun! Tuition is only $10 for two participants (one adult and one child) and $5 for each additional participant. After class, you can check either of our two galleries or head out to your next adventure. Another great way to help everyone in the family foster their creativity is by participating in free local art events. There are dozens of arts festivals and concerts throughout the summer in Lincoln, including our Community Arts Afternoon! On Sunday, June 7th from 1-4 p.m. we will open our doors and get creative! There is something for everyone with this year’s lineup of activities including sculpting with clay, mural painting, henna tattoos, tie-dyeing (T-shirts will be available for visitors to purchase for $5) and more! Live pottery wheel demos and music will inspire your family to
get creative. Just as children grow and change, so do our programs! LUX Center for the Arts is offering more camps on more topics than ever before! Check out the new Tween Pottery Wheel Camp, Bilingual Art Camp, and Metal Arts Workshops for high school students. We are also offering Family Workshops (open to all ages) twice a month. Have A Plan For Pets In An Emergency
By Charleen Engberg, Director of Education and Volunteers, Capital Humane Society
D
o you know what you would do if there was a fire, tornado, or another type of emergency? How will you get out safe? Or where should you take cover? Who might be able to provide temporary shelter for your pets? Emergency planning is an important topic for families to discuss. You will want to assess the needs of your whole family including the furry members. Thinking ahead will help you react competently in a crisis and could even save a life. “It is best to make arrangements ahead of time so that you know what to do and where you can go with your pets in case of an emergency,” said Dr. Laura Andersen, Director of Veterinary Medicine at Capital Humane Society.
Page 10 • lincolnkidsinc.com
“Identify several boarding facilities and hotels that allow pets and have their contact information (addresses and phone numbers) with your emergency kit should you have to evacuate your home,” she advised. “You can also ask friends or family members if they would be able to care for your pet(s) during emergencies and have their contact information in the kit.” “Of course, have your veterinarian’s contact information if your pet is injured during the emergency as well as other local emergency veterinary clinics,” she added. The items Dr. Andersen recommended putting in an emergency kit include: a. Enough pet food for 3-7 days stored in a water and pest proof container (easy-open canned food (or pack a can opener) or dry food - be sure to rotate it regularly) b. Clean/bottled water c. Food and water bowls
d. Extra collar or harness and leash e. Collapsible crate or pet carrier (one for each pet) f. Disposable litter boxes, litter, paper towels, and garbage bags for cleaning up after pets g. Blankets and/or towels h. Current pictures of your pets i. Any medications your pet has been prescribed by your veterinarian, pack enough for 2 weeks j. A current copy of your pets’ medical records including vaccinations and rabies certificate sealed inside a Ziploc bag. Another option for the paperwork is to scan these records and save the files on a portable thumb drive that you simply update as needed.
“I highly recommend all pets be implanted with a microchip and wear visible ID, such as a collar with tags,” she said. “Even the best preparation cannot cover all possibilities and should you become separated from your pet, visible ID will alert others that the pet belongs to someone.” “If the collar and/or tags get
lost, however, the microchip is an excellent back up to help your friend get back home to you,” she explained. “Be sure to register the microchip when it is implanted and update the registry any time and every time your contact information changes.” There are reliable sources with information to research, such as the American Red Cross and FEMA, that will help you develop a good plan to protect the people and pets in your home in an emergency. Should a crisis situation occur, you will be so glad you took the time to prepare. This summer we’re going on treks around the Nature Center and I hope you can join us. Nature Trekkers is a new program at Pioneers Park Nature Center designed for children in preschool through grade school. Each week, starting from the Prairie Building, we’ll head out to a new destination, exploring and learning along the way. On June 10th our trek will take us to the Natural Play Area. We’ll trek to a clearing and get a little wet and muddy while exploring aquatic critters on July 15th. The last trek of the season, on July 22nd, will take us through the woods and along a creek. As we walk we’ll look up, down, and all around for clues that tell us what is living here. All treks will take place on Wednesday form 10 am – 11 am in June and July. Children’s groups must have at least one adult per six children. The fee for this program is $3/child. To register please call Pioneers Park Nature Center at 402-441-7895. If you can’t trek with us, there are still plenty of opportunities to come out to the Nature Center. Check out upcoming events and other programs at http://lincoln. ne.gov/city/parks/naturecenter/ programming.htm. Memories for Free By Lindsay Rogers, Wildlife Education Specialist for the

aving kids is expensive. Daycare, clothing, food and don’t forget about doctor’s visits. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it costs approximately $245,000 to raise a child from birth to 18-years old. And, no, that does not include the cost of college. If you have two children like me, that means you will spend nearly half a million dollars to care, feed, clothe and educate your children. While this may sound shocking, it is understandable when you look at the cost of childcare alone. In Nebraska, the average annual childcare rate is $6,386 for a 4-year-old child. As a comparison, the cost of tuition for one year at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln is $6,480. So what are parents to do when their child asks the inevitable “What can we do?” question every weekend? Or when school is out for the summer and boredom creeps? The answer is simple: nature. Spending time outside with your family is not only inexpensive, but also a fantastic way to make memories. If you think back to your

Head out to Pioneers Park. Lincolnites are fortunate to have a top-notch nature center within our community. Stroll along the trails to see raptors, venture through the prairie, head to the forest nature center to view native animals, explore the rain garden, or attend a naturalist program. All for free! (donations welcome!) Grab your bike, scooter or Big Wheel and head to the trails. Lincoln’s network of trails is extensive. The MoPac, Billy Wolff, Rock Island, Jamaica North and Bison are just a few of the many trails that lead through (and out of) the city. After all, a March 2015 article in the Journal of Marriage and Family suggests that quality time with your children is what matters. Not your paycheck, their toys, or expensive vacations. Simple, relaxing adventures in nature will do just fine! Time outdoors is time well spent.

Dear ice cream, I hate you What I just said is true Your vanilla, chocolate, crunchy skin Always melts down my chin Ice cream, I hate you What I just said is true Even though you are good to taste Much of you always goes to waste
You’re Invited The wind flows though the fern tree making lovely music. The robins and blue jays sing along to it. The crickets chirp to give the beat. The maple trees branches sway to the music watching the young daisies dance and sway to the music . I listen and watch nature’s party.
Ice cream, I hate you What I just said is true You are not so good to eat Then why are you called a tasty treat?

Don’t Let Your Child’s Reading “Slide” This Summer By Vicki Wood, Youth Services Supervisor, Lincoln City Libraries
S
ummer Learning Loss, or, as it is sometimes called, the Summer Slide, has been documented and supported in research for over 40 years. All young people experience learning losses when they don’t engage in educational activities during the summer. Research shows that students typically score lower on standardized tests at the end of summer vacation than they do on the same tests at the beginning of summer vacation. When it comes to helping stanch summer learning loss, parents have a key role to play. Learning loss is much less pronounced, if there at all, in families that enrolled children in classes, took trips to local libraries, participated in reading programs, or took advantage of other, often free,
learning opportunities. Numerous studies have shown that children have much better reading outcomes when parents are involved in learning about and helping their children with literacy. Source: The Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Summer Learning. So let’s explore ways you can keep your child’s mind engaged during the crucial summer months. Start by visiting the library early and often. Children, teens and adults can register for the Summer Reading Program starting May 22. That way you will get a head start on creating your summer library habit. Even though your child may be able to read on his/her own, continue to read aloud. Choose a book you loved as a child, tackle a series you know he’ll love, or a longer book your children are too young to read on their own.

Is your child reading one or more years below grade level? The Kit & Dick Schmoker Reading Center is offering tutoring this summer for students grades 1st – 6th. One-on-one instruction is provided in: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing skills.

Plan to attend some of our special Summer Reading Program events during the summer. They are all free and most require no preregistration. Set aside screen-free days of the week, or periods of the day. Check out Playaways. These are small devices a child plugs headphones into to listen to a book. Challenge your child to walk and listen for a half hour a day. Chores aren’t all about unloading the dishwasher. Have an older child read to a younger one instead of a dreaded chore. Roam the non-fiction area and dip into it as often as possible. Start with craft books, sprinkle in a little history, or a fascinating biography. Almanacs and The Guinness Book of World Records are sure-fire hits with the middle school set. Do some research together about a place you might plan a vacation to — in your dreams, or in real life. To help your beginning reader find a book that is at her reading level, use the five finger rule. Have her read a page and count on one hand every time there is a word she doesn’t know. If there are five or more words on that page, the book is probably too challenging. Do a book-to-movie night once a week. We have hundreds of feature films based on children’s books. Challenge your family to read a book during the week, and follow it up with a viewing of the film that weekend. Discuss the differences between the film and the book; which did your child prefer? Explore the library’s collection of ebooks and downloadable audio for ease when traveling. Take advantage of downtime such as waiting at the doctor’s office, or standing in line at the grocery store, to get bits of reading in. Often, you can get kids hooked into a book just by reading the first few pages.
Finally, take advantage of the vast knowledge of your librarian. She can recommend books based on your child’s age, interests, and reading level. This summer, Lincoln City Libraries will feature a list of the Top 50 First Readers and Beginning Chapter Books. There will be multiple copies of each of the selections on display and available for check out at all libraries.

J
ohn Winkelsas, a retired chemistry teacher from the Washington D.C. area and an NU State Museum volunteer, will lead visitors on an investigation of various science and natural history related topics through hands-on activities and exploration. The program began Saturday, January 10th with the inaugural program ‘snowflake crystals’. “The Museum is a great place for children to enjoy and explore science without the pressure of tests and grades. We are very grateful to Anne M. Hubbard, M.D. and the Claire M. Hubbard Foundation for generous support of the new Science Lab sessions as part of our new Volunteer Program,” said Priscilla Grew, Museum Director. “As a Smithsonian affiliate, we
are particularly delighted that John Winkelsas brings to Nebraska his past experience as a volunteer at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History.” “One of the goals of the museum’s new volunteer program is to enhance the visitor’s experience”, said Kathy French, NU State Museum Education Coordinator. “Investigating science first hand by our younger visitors will provide another fun and engaging opportunity for them while at the museum. These young scientists will experience a wide variety of topics throughout the year, many of which will help explain segments of the natural world.”

Lincoln Montessori To Close It’s Doors After 45 years of providing a Montessori education to young children in Lincoln, the Lincoln Montessori School is closing its doors at the end of the current academic year. LMS is Lincoln’s original Montessori school. To mark the school’s closing, current and past parents are hosting a farewell Open House at the school on Saturday, May 16th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. All former parents, adult children (15 and over) and friends are invited. While the Saturday celebration is an adults only event, children who graduated within the past decade will be included in the celebration by being invited to attend a special Children’s Open House on the preceding afternoon (May 15th) from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Lincoln Montessori School opened in September of 1969 and moved into its current building at 2615 Austin Drive in 1970. Since then a generation of Lincoln children have crossed the threshold into the Montessori “Children’s House” and a sprinkling of second generation children are now attending classes there.

Diet Sodas & Artificial Sweeteners
I
Is Diet Soda“Healthy”?
am often asked if diet soda is a healthy drink. The short answer is no. The long answer is that they are likely bad for you, but not for the reasons most people think. Past concerns that some artificial sweeteners could cause cancer don’t have much support. The main problems are that diet sodas aren’t really “diet” and they cause problems with how your body responds to artificial sweeteners. The first problem is that “diet” sodas don’t really work the way they are advertised. The original concept for “diet” sodas was that by replacing sugar with a zero-calorie artificial sweetener, you could satisfy your sweet tooth and lose weight at the same time. What’s not to like about that? The problem
is that studies to date have shown that switching to diet soda doesn’t result in weight loss, so calling these drinks “diet” is misleading. Even worse, many recent studies show the opposite happens, drinking diet soda is associated with gaining weight. Why Would “Diet” Soda Cause You to Gain Weight? The conclusion of several studies is that artificial sweeteners make you hungry. There are several possible explanations for this. One explanation has to do with how your body responds to sugar.
When you taste sweet, your body starts making insulin (a hormone that controls sugar in the blood stream) before what you eat or drink gets to your stomach. Your body is expecting a load of sugar on the way, but when the diet soda starts getting absorbed by your stomach, there is no sugar for the insulin to respond to. This causes your blood sugar to drop which then makes you hungry. So, although the diet soda has no calories, it makes you hungry and you eat more food. Diet Sodas, Adding Calories, and Sweet Cravings There may also be several behavioral reasons that explain the link between diet soda, hunger and weight gain. The first is that people who drink a diet soda think that because they drank something with no calories, they can now eat something with more calories. Often times the food they eat
has even more calories than the amount of calories they avoided with the diet soda, the net result
being more calories consumed and increased weight. A second reason that artificial sweeteners seem to lead to weight gain is that artificial sweeteners lead to sugar craving and dependence. Regular use resets your taste buds to expect more sweetness, leading people to crave sugar and want foods to be sweeter. Better Choices The potential problems with “diet” sodas and artificial sweeteners are now being confirmed with recent studies showing that regular

Life is a Real Zoo with John Chapo
By John Chappo, Zoo president & CEO
T
his is my favorite time of year! The grass is getting green, flowers are blooming, birds are chirping and the animals at Lincoln Children’s Zoo are awakening from their winter nap. When I walk through the Zoo on these wonderful weather days I gain a great appreciation of how great Nebraska is during the spring months. The best part of my walks is seeing all the families out and about looking at their favorite Zoo animal. Our Zoo is a place where children and adults can get out of the house, enjoy nature and have firsthand interactions with our great animals! Arnott Folsom opened the Zoo in 1965 with the dream of creating one of the best children’s zoos in the nation. Our Zoo would be a place where children wouldn’t
just look at an animal but would interact and experience amazing animals like no other zoo in the country. When I arrived in Lincoln 29 years ago I instantly realized the importance of the founder’s goals. We’ve always “Mind if I finish my salad?” Zookeeper, kept the goal of Taylor Daniels, plus a few friends, join Betty, creating up-close the tortoise, for a Zoo encounter. encounters in Another reason why I love this mind when buildtime of year is seeing all the suping new exhibits. When buildport our Zoo receives. The founing the Humboldt penguin exhibit dation of this Zoo is community we wanted children to get eye support. I hear story upon story of to eye with the incredible South school children donating change American birds. When we built the to Mr. Folsom and businesses and Animal Encounter Stage we wantorganizations donating their time ed it to be a place where families and money to ensure the Zoo could see how truly phenomenal opened in 1965. That support has our animals are and then talk to a never wavered the past 50 years. real zookeeper about them.
We are one of the few zoos in the country to receive no tax funding and yet we have accomplished so many amazing things for half a century. It is all because of our amazing community! I guess for me it’s more than just the grass getting green, flowers blooming, birds chirping and having the animals out. It’s the fact that for 50 years our Lincoln Children’s Zoo has been a place for families to make memories and explore nature. It is also a place that is special to this community because it was the community that has made it all possible. That is why I love this time of year! I’ll see you at the Zoo!

Put Your Thinking Caps On
It’s Camp Time at the Lincoln Children’s Museum!
By Miss Flowers Education Director Lincoln Children’s Museum
S
ummer vacation is a magical time for kids. Maybe it’s the seemingly endless amounts of sun, extra time with family and friends, or just the oodles of time to play and explore. No matter what it is that makes your kids jump for joy and count down the days until summer, we have a camp that will make your child’s vacation feel extra special. From Messy Masterpieces to World Record Breakers, this season our camps are chalk full of interactive, hands-on, brain-engaging fun and we just need some BIG thinkers to join the party! Does your child turn all the recyclables in your house into masterful works of art? Has your kitchen often become your daugh-
ter’s personal science lab? Does your son constantly recruit family members and pets to star in his movies? Those are the kind of bright young minds and big thinkers who will feel right at home in the Lincoln Children’s Museum Think Factory. Our camps are full of open-ended activities and experienced staff who will nurture your child’s inner creativity and open them up to new educational experiences. Those who join us this summer will learn how to use a microscope, make homemade pasta, throw paint-filled balloons, play a life sized game of CLUE, make movies and attempt to break world records. Phew–a thinker’s job is never done! So get out your
thinking cap and join us in the Think Factory this summer at the Lincoln Children’s Museum! For more information or to register, please visit www.lincolnchildrensmuseum.org or call (402) 477-4000.

When I was a kid the moms in our neighborhood didn’t have cell phones or Smart Watches to get a hold of us kids. They typically used their lungs, “Kids, time to come in!” In the case of our neighbor across the street they had a pet parrot that lived in a cage on their front porch during the summer months. When it was time to come home the mother would step out on the porch and yell out, “Craig”. Because her son spent most of his time in our backyard he would hear her voice and knew if he didn’t get home pronto he would be in big trouble. Well, the parrot, being a parrot, started parroting the mother and soon was screaching out “Craig” at all times of the day and night. Poor little neighbor boy Craig never knew if it was is mom or the parrot. Craig!!! – Mark

Toileting Concerns; Enuresis and Noctural Enuresis By Anita K. Lovell, MA, LMHP, CPC, Adultspan Counseling
M
ost children are ready to start toilet training when they are between 22 and 30 months of age. However, the age at which a child will be completely toilet trained varies from child to child. Enuresis is involuntary discharge of urine after the age at which one should normally be able to control wetting. Enuresis is a common childhood problem, but is not typically diagnosed before age 5. According to www.webmd. com, estimates suggest that 7% of boys and 3% of girls age 5 have enuresis. These numbers drop to 3% of boys and 2% of girls by age 10. Most children outgrow this problem by the time they become teenagers. Nocturnal enuresis is also known as bed-wetting. There are several causes of bed-wetting but the #1 cause is genetics. For the 5 million U.S. children over age 6 who wet the bed, stress doesn’t directly cause a child to start wetting the bed, but the behaviors associated with the stress don’t help. Stress related behaviors can make bed-wetting worse, or make a child who was mostly dry experience wet nights. These behaviors include: • Eating a high-salt diet–Kids, like many adults, may seek the comfort of food when they’re stressed. These foods could include salty snacks. It has been known that salty foods will result in your body retaining fluids. Start retaining fluids, and if you’re already likely to wet the bed, you may wet even more. • Drinking fluids right up to bed time–Stress or anxiety may also cause a child to drink too much late at night. • Not emptying the bladder at night–When we get wrapped up in our busy schedules our children forget to urinate before bedtime or we, as parents, forget to provide reminders.
• Sleep deprivation–When children are sleep deprived from stressful thoughts (up at night thinking about friends, school, family, a victimization, etc), they are more likely to go into an even deeper sleep once they fall asleep. This could cause bed-wetting. Although stress itself doesn’t cause bed-wetting, bed-wetting definitely causes stress; not only for parents, but the children too. This isn’t always easy for a child to control, but it is not out of the question to see improvements or eliminate the problem all together. Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do to help your child physically and emotionally. • Alarm clock set for regular nighttime awakenings • Altering diet (salt intake, etc.) • Control liquid consumption • Encourage your child to use the bathroom at night (provide night lights to make it easier) • Get a medical exam to rule out medical concerns (e.g., constipation, infections, etc.) • Medication management (see your primary care physician) • Positive reinforcement for dry nights (attending sleep overs with friends, camping trips, etc.) • Verbally praise when your child is actively trying to stay dry • Educate your child on bed-wetting; genetics play a part. • Therapy – individual or family • If/when bed-wetting accidents occur, involve your child in the clean-up process . As a child’s body matures, enuresis/bed-wetting normally stops. It is important to remember that children’s bodies mature
at different rates. Approximately 15% of children outgrow enuresis/bed-wetting each year. Some factors to consider when trying to decide if your child needs treatment are whether the child’s self-esteem is negatively affected by the wetting and whether this problem is causing impairment in functioning (e.g., causing the child to avoid attending sleepovers with friends). Getting treatment as soon as symptoms of enuresis or nocturnal
enuresis appear may help reduce the problems associated with the condition. Patience and understanding are vital to overcoming enuresis/bedwetting without harm to the child’s self-esteem. Punishment and anger are damaging to a child’s well-being. Here at the KidsCorner with Adultspan Counseling we are here to talk to you about your child’s enuresis/bed-wetting behaviors and work on a specific treatment plan for you and your family. If your child is struggling with enuresis or nocturnal enuresis in your home, don’t hesitate to contact Anita K. Lovell, MA, LMHP, CPC at 402-325-0117 to schedule an appointment.

My name is Nick.
And I think I know what you see when you look at a kid.
Excitement. Hope. Pride. But I wonder what you see when you look at me. I wonder because I am a foster kid. And even though I am a star on my basketball team, rock at math, and plan to head off to college next year, I still wonder if you look at me differently. But please don’t. Please, see in me what you see in all those other kids.
I need you to believe in me the way you believe in them. Will you be a foster parent? Kids like Nick are waiting. 402-434-5437 | www.cedarskids.org

Never Too Early to Learn How To Get Organized A BIG Mistake Parents Make Every Day and Why They Need to Stop!
I
t is EASIER to do things yourself! As the parent, you do things, faster, more efficiently and with less mess. If you do things yourself, you do not have to listen to complaining, back talk, and sighing. Moreover, you won’t be the recipient of an overly dramatic eye roll or tantrum. There are a multitude of reasons why it is easier to do things yourself, yet there is just one reason to stop, you are doing more harm than good. Author Lisa Bates has announced the release of her newest book: Barbies in the Horse Bin, Living Better with Organized Children.
A non-traditional book on organizing, Barbies in the Horse Bin examines what being organized really means, why things “Organization is not about constantly perfection, it is about living better. become disorganized The only mistake is not to begin.” and, most importantly, how to raise an organized child. This after scenarios, it helps you look book reads like a conversation beyond “the mess”, “the forgotten with a trusted friend and it informs soccer cleat” and the “perfection” by utilizing concepts, quotes and to solve problems your way with personal stories that resonate with your family. readers. families, her sense of humor, and expert storytelling to convey the most important aspects of not only teaching organization to children but also developing their executive functioning skills and self-esteem. You will never think about “being organized” the same way again. Features include the “Fabulous 15” Organizational Skills and everyday activities for children of all ages as well as unforgettable stories like the one behind the title Barbies in the Horse Bin. Lisa Bates is a sought after speaker and consultant. She has a Master’s Degree in Counseling Psychology, teaching and administrative experience. She has worked for nearly three decades with children from cradle to college. LB Living Better is Lisa’s company, providing organizational/educational services and consultations. Lisa lives on Cape Cod with her husband, three teenagers and two ill-mannered, yet lovable Labradors. The book is published by Living Better Publishing, ISBN:97815030446269, $12.99/$4.99 Kindle www.amazon.com/dp/B00SXS1Q5O).
Editor’s Note
Like most things in life the earlier you start the easier the learning curve. When I was younger I was more likely to put “Barbies in the Toilet” than in a Horse Bin. Even to this day my preferred method of organizing clothes is to dump them on the floor in my closet. Out of sight–out of mind. My mother didn’t learn how to become organized until her mid-80’s. If she can do it then maybe someday I can. My hope is that in the near future the day will come when my wife will once again be willing to open my closet. Until then, the sign,“Beware of Avalanches” stays on the door.

Avoid Brain Drain…Strategies for Summer Reading By Gwelda Carlson, Nebraska Dyslexia Association
N
o more homework struggles, standardized tests and stressful, busy daily schedules. Summer is a time for parents and kids to unwind and engage in fun activities focusing on setting some goals, involving the family, and developing the child’s interests. As a parent, you play a critical role in your child’s education during the summer. Research confirms that children who do not engage in summer learning are often outperformed by their peers once they return to the classroom. A recent study estimates that summer loss for all students equals about a month of academic learning. Sally Shaywitz, author of Overcoming Dyslexia, reports that the amount of time spent reading significantly affects vocabulary development, fluency and comprehension. One of the most important gifts you can give your child this summer is to spend time reading with him or her. Help them enjoy books and feel the joy, not pressure, from reading. A more flexible summer schedule provides an opportunity to explore your child’s interests through trips to museums, historical landmarks, state and national parks, and libraries. “Projectoriented” learning through hobbies and interest areas allows your child to explore learning without stress. For children who struggle with reading who have dyslexia, reading may not be “fun”. Neverthe-less, they can discover the joys of reading and other academic skills in a relaxed summer environment. Kids who struggle with reading will oftentimes avoid reading because it is so difficult. Take some time this summer to find books for your kids written at their level that appeal to their interests. Whether your kids struggle with reading or not, no one will argue with you that the more a child
reads, the better. High interest/low reading level books can motivate struggling readers by providing books on topics that are really engaging, targeted toward their reading level. High/low books can help build reading fluency, vocabulary, background knowledge and interest in reading. Hi-Low books have the advantage of looking like chapter books and are written about interesting topics. Find the right series of books that interest them. Kids can read books they’ve already read. One of the fastest ways to build reading fluency is to read a book below grade level and read it more than once. If you’re not sure whether the book is too difficult, use the “5 finger” rule—if your child mispronounces 5 or more words on a page, the book is too hard for him. Let younger children “pretend” to read. Read aloud to your child and enjoy books together. Read higher level books to your child and work to develop vocabulary knowledge. Throw out the idea that in order for summer reading to count it has to be a BOOK. Give them material that motivates them to read, even though they may find it difficult to do. Let them help plan your summer vacation by reading about possible activities and places to go. Have them keep a record of things you saw. Sign up for a summer activity—this could be a dance class, guitar lessons, an art class or a sports team. Then find books and magazines related to it. Help them read the directions and follow through on a project. Reading recipes for cooking experiences are a great bonding experience. Provide comic books and children’s magazines. Use technology—not only can a great deal
of knowledge be found on the computer, utilize the software that will read material to them. Provide recorded books (Learning Ally or from the local library). When shopping, have your child read store signs, product labels, etc. Engage your child in writing activities. Your child can write your shopping list, do a daily journal, create a scrapbook and write the captions, or practice keyboarding skills (check out the fun computer keyboarding programs). Begin “blogging” with friends and family. Summer presents the perfect opportunity for children that struggle with reading to gain needed
remediation and reinforcement of reading skill development. Summer programs should provide intensive explicit, systematic instruction using evidence-based instruction. A good tutor can be a lifeline for a student with learning difficulties. It is worth putting a lot of effort into finding the right person. The rewards can be very great! The Nebraska Dyslexia Association maintains a list of tutors and educational therapists who are trained in Orton-Gillingham multisensory instructional methods. For information on helping the struggling reader, writer, speller, contact the Nebraska Dyslexia Association (www.ne-da.org) or call 402-4346434.
