Fall 2O21 FROM THE PUBLISHER Dear Lincoln Kids Readers, Every time I prepare to write this letter, I fondly remember my grandmother Eleanor. She gave me so many gifts throughout my childhood, not material ones, but gifts of time and intention. For nearly a quarter of a century, my grandmother wrote me a letter every week. She would keep me apprised of the weather, family updates, and she would always convey her love for me in closing. I still have most of the letters tucked away in my closet. They remind me of how important it is to let those people in your life know that you are thinking of them and that you care. It also reminds me to share good stories, whether that be through letters, books and of course, magazines. In this issue, there are three stories that I hope you will take the time to read. One is about a young mother and her journey as she raises three kids who are ages three and younger; another is an interview with a nationally-known candle maker and mother of four; and the last story will touch your heart as five-year-old Bentley shares her feelings about being a little cowgirl. I always want to hear stories from our readers. They can be inspirational or ones that are about ordinary life. If you have a story to share, please reach out to us at hello@lnkkids.com. THE LK TEAM

Until next time,

Christine Weeks, Owner / Publisher

Union Bank & Trust • Calling all young financial wiz kids! The Union Bank & Trust exhibit has new interactive features, like currency for kids to count, a tube system at the bank’s drive-up window that simulates money being sent to the teller and back, a wall of money trivia, and more. Be sure to stop by to make a deposit! Riley the Robot • Fascinated by building things? Riley the Robot is a mechanical robot that allows kids to use the robotic arm to build whatever their imagination can design. It’s robo-tastic! Three “Secrets” to Training Your Dog BY L I N D S AY T H O M P S O N & C H A R L E E N E N G B E R G C A P I TA L H U M A N E S O C I E T Y

Dogs are intelligent, sensitive animals that can learn excellent manners and fantastic tricks with proper training. Positive reinforcement or reward-based training brings out the best in dogs and helps build trust between a canine and their human. Here are three “secrets” to help you be successful with training. Determine the motive behind your dog’s behavior! Does your dog jump up to greet you or beg for your food? These behaviors are motivated by the dog’s desire for attention. Does your dog not respond to commands like “sit” or “down?” This behavior can be mistaken for stubbornness or lack of intelligence, but it is still attention in the dog’s mind. Determining the motivation behind your dog’s behavior can help you train them. Work on creating new skills instead of fixing problems! Training teaches a dog which behaviors to offer to get what they want. It is easy to view undesirable behaviors as problems to fix. Training teaches your dog new skills to modify behaviors and communicate better. If you have a dog who is constantly pining for your plate of food, train them to go to a designated spot when it’s time to eat. Providing a high-value treat or toy to your dog at that time creates an association between your mealtime and their special goodie.

4 |

fa l l 2021

The greatest challenge is training ourselves! People who love their pets like family usually treat and talk to them like people. Remember: we don’t speak the same language! Successful training depends on consistency, patience, and teaching your animal in the way they actually learn. If your dog loves to jump up and greet people, simply turning your back to the dog or leaving the room tells them that jumping up is not acceptable. Rewarding “four paws on the floor” with calm loving pets or a treat reinforces the acceptable behavior. Do your best to give yourself and your dog grace and patience — training is a process and no person or dog is perfect! Capital Humane Society offers basic obedience and puppy training classes that can provide structure and guidance for you and your furry friend. capitalhumanesociety.org

Support Across the Spectrum A U T I S M FA M I LY N E T W O R K

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a neurological disorder that refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 54 children in the United States, with boys being four times more likely to have autism. Individuals with ASD may communicate, interact, behave, and learn in ways that are different from others. Their learning, thinking, and problem-solving abilities can range from gifted to severely challenged, causing some to need a lot of daily assistance, while others need less support and, in some cases, live entirely independently. Because autism is a spectrum disorder and has many subtypes, influenced by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, each person with autism has a distinct set of strengths and challenges.

encouragement, and help in the midst of frustration, discouragement, and loneliness that is very real for these families. In 2018, AFN launched Project Lifesaver in Lincoln/Lancaster County. Project Lifesaver is a battery-operated band worn by a child or adult with autism who is prone to wandering. If the person is reported missing, speciallytrained search and rescue teams from the Lincoln Police Department and Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office will respond using a tracking system. This team is trained to know how to best approach the person once found. Legislative and educational advocacy, as well as a scholarship assistance program are all focuses of AFN. Recreational and inclusive opportunities/ activities offered by AFN include: • Sensory friendly fun at the Lincoln Children’s Museum • Annual Christmas party • Night at Lost in Fun • Swim nights at Star City Shores • Movies, putt putt golf, bowling

Lincoln is fortunate to have the Autism Family Network (AFN). Its mission is to support and advocate for individuals on the autism spectrum and their families, and is dedicated to providing social and recreational opportunities, and community inclusion. AFN also promotes a positive, respectful image of people with autism and their families. Its primary function is to provide connection,

Fall-unteering! MAKE A DIFFERENCE THIS SEASON

One of the most rewarding and fun things anyone can do is to volunteer with a local organization. Nonprofits are in constant need of volunteers to help them provide their services. Volunteering can give children a sense of pride in helping others and instill a lifetime of giving back to their community.

is from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and dinner is from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. •

Here are other ways to get involved: •

Meals to Go. Items would need to be purchased by the volunteer or raise funds to purchase them.

Collect items. Socks, blankets, backpacks, personal hygiene products, diapers, water, non-perishable foods, and other items can be collected.

Recycle dead textiles. Recycling dead textiles keeps them out of the landfills and helps to offset expenses for the Help Center facility.

Promote us on social media – likes and shares!

Donate water - an essential need in hot weather.

Volunteering Can Teach Kids Life Lessons Kids hear about other people their age doing amazing things that change lives. Volunteering teaches kids to: •

Be responsible and committed to a project

Feel good about themselves

Have an impact on others

Work with people from different backgrounds and ages

Develop skills that may lead to a future career

Avoid being bored

How to Be a Friend

Be yourself. Each of us is unique, and we all have things that help us to stand out. Let others see your cool qualities and celebrate them with you.

BY J I L L H U G H E S , E L E M E N TA R Y S C H O O L C O U N S E L O R

The start of a new school year is the perfect time to make new friends! These steps may help you find a new pal. Be kind! Always remember that kindness matters and using kind words or doing kind things for others is a sign of a great friend. Does someone at your lunch table have a cool water bottle? Tell them! Does someone look sad or worried on the first day? Offer to help them out. Kindness can make both the giver and the receiver feel amazing!

Treat others how you want to be treated. The Golden Rule always works! If you see a friend playing alone at recess, think about how that would make you feel and go talk to them. Find people with whom you have things in common. Be sure to listen when others are telling about themselves. Maybe someone else loves bugs as much as you do, or maybe there’s someone in your class who is full of soccer facts like you are. Many times friends are people who like to do the same things as you do! Make new friends! Be brave and introduce yourself to the new student in your class. Or, if you are a new student, be sure to say hello to someone on the first day. Everyone likes to feel like they belong, and new friends are everywhere!

Leading With Light A Candlelight Chat between Christine Weeks and Alicia Reisinger, Wax Buffalo Pure Soy Candle Co. Note from the Editor: I’ve admired Alicia for years. She’s positive, also a mother of four and a business owner. We share the same belief that you can blend motherhood, friendship, and owning a business into your life. Here’s her story! Tell us a little about yourself and your kiddos. Oh Hi! I’m Alicia Reisinger. I’m a documentary filmmaker and storyteller by trade. I met and married this crazy adventurer docu maker in Chicago. We have four kids: Navy, 9, Satchel, 8, Oxley, 4, and Maslow, 2. When did you decide to start Wax Buffalo? I am a candle maker. I am a girl boss. I am a mama. Those things are not separate to me; in fact, they perfectly merge into my simplest, happiest life. My first baby girl was born with a cleft lip and palate. I think the shock of her birth really forced me to reflect on what was important in my life. At the time I was traveling the world as a TV producer and on-air host for a television show called Footnote. Navy, my daughter, turned my world upside down in a really beautiful way. In the process, I slowly found candles again. Something I had loved as a child, the art of candle making.

16 |

s u m m e r 2021

What’s the story behind the company? The first candle I ever poured was a Christmas gift for my grandma Ferne when I was 14. My grandma loved candles. I lost my sweet little Ferne a few years ago. I think in my mourning and loss for her I reached back to my roots and began pouring candles again more steadily. Between my experiences with Navy and my sweet Ferne I realized that finding a balance of work and play and care and love was the ultimate goal. I had created that for myself with this tiny brand and as we started to grow, I looked toward others that think with a similar perspective— women that have these beautiful dreams and lives. In this little space, we encourage each other, we collaborate and push each other, and we laugh. We laugh a lot. What makes Wax Buffalo unique? We hand pour pure soy candles here in Lincoln. Our scents are reminiscent of travel and stories, and when you pick up a Wax Buffalo candle, we believe you’re transported back to those memories in a beautiful way. We are in over 300 stores and boutiques across the country including our biggest wholesaler, Whole Foods. What’s been the best piece of “mom” advice that you ever received? Long ago, someone told me to choose my “no’s” wisely. Like, to ask yourself, why are you saying no? And does it matter. Ox wants a popsicle mid-morning, sure! Finding all the ways to say yes as much as I can, so that when I do need to say NO it has meaning. It has gravity.

What’s your advice to moms who are starting businesses? DO IT! • If you have a dream, don’t wait. • It’s one of the most beautiful things you can do for your own heart, and your family. Doing something that you love and brings you life will filter through your whole being. • There are a lot of ways for you to build generational wealth for your family, very simply. Small choices and small amounts tucked away strategically can affect your family now and for generations to come. What products does Wax Buffalo have for kids? I’m so glad you asked! Our retail shop is stocked full of fun things for kiddos. Right now we have kiddo candle-making kits, play-doh, candy, and hair accessories. Just all kinds of fun goodies! Additionally, we offer the Candle Lab which is so fun to do as a family or a fun birthday party idea. Where can we find your storefront? Our retail store is located in the Haymarket here in Lincoln: 727 O Street Lincoln, NE 68508 Hours: Monday – Saturday, 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM Sunday, 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM We make all of our candles here in the production studio behind the candle shop. We have 13 women and my dad on our team. It’s happy and bustling and we’d love to see your beautiful faces for a visit!

Only Five & Taking the Reins An Interview with Shanna & Bentley Note from the Editor: I met Shanna over ten years ago when I was her fitness coach at Farrell’s. I quickly connected with Shanna as we both shared a love for hard work and our families. I knew from the start that she is a get-it-done and tell-youlike-it-is sort of woman. Thankfully, Facebook has kept us connected over the years and I’ve been able to watch Shanna’s world evolve. She’s now a mother of two and a horse mom of many. Shanna has posted pictures of her daughter, Bentley, riding horses since she was a tiny little girl and I have always been intrigued by how she rides at such a young age. I hope you enjoy this interview about bravery, luck, and a whole lot of grit. Here’s their story.

Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. Bentley, can you tell us when you first learned to ride? Bentley (5-years-old): When I was three, Aunt Kris sent Charm (horse) to live with us and she was the bestest girl. Then CJ (Angelica’s horse) came to live with us because Angelica (a family friend) knew I would love him and take care of him and she was right.

20 |

fa l l 2021

How many hours a day does Bentley spend with her horses? Shanna (Mom): Two to three hours a day between CJ, Daisy, and Razzle. She has two bigs (Quarter Horses) and Razzle is a mini horse. When we are at a rodeo or show, I usually have to pull her off bawling and squalling because she just wants to ride. That’s why we haul two horses; between Daisy and CJ they take turns with her while the other one rests — I’m not kidding. How often does Bentley compete? Shanna: She competes in the National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA) pee wee barrels. She also does a rodeo series in Fremont and at Bar Star Ranch in Lincoln. We are usually somewhere riding every weekend in the summer and she rides almost every night, whether it be bareback around the house/ pasture or saddled up on a ride. She’s been eyeballing my barrel horse pretty hard lately so I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before she takes him over as well. Bentley, what do you love about riding? Bentley: I love horses, going fast, and getting better and better on Daisy and CJ. Someday I’m going to go REALLY fast on Jesse! Shanna: Jesse is my horse—see? I knew she had an agenda there.

What are some things you’ll never forget about Bentley learning to ride? Shanna: CJ came off an injury and was a little fresh his first night back at barrel lessons; he bucked a few times and I asked her later what she thought about that. She told me, “It’s ok if he bucks and it’s ok if I fall off, I’ll just get back on. Cowgirls don’t give up.” CJ was on stall rest for three weeks and every morning she would go out and read him a book, talk to him, and let him know how much she loved him. Recently the vet commented on how well he healed and I have no doubt her love was most of it. She’s got life figured out…at 5. She sure does. What are your horses like? Bentley: CJ is a naughty bucking bronco but he’s my horse and I love him. He’s my best friend. Shanna: Daisy is an angel, tolerant, and kind, and takes care of her rider. She’s also very beautiful, a palomino with a long white tail. She’s worth her weight in gold. Bentley: She’s really pretty and smoother than CJ but she’s slow. I like to go fast. Shanna: CJ is…CJ.

How has riding horses made your life better, Bentley? Bentley: Riding has made me brave and taught me to care about animals. No pulling on their faces — Mom hates that. So does CJ, he’ll buck! Shanna: Accurate, all of that.

She seems pretty fearless on that horse. Is that learned or just her personality ! Shanna: It’s her, through and through. She is my little baby karma.

However, her passion for horses and riding definitely feeds her thirst for adventure and, as her Mom, it’s equally thrilling and terrifying to watch. Especially with her “step up” horse CJ—he’s still fast at his age (22) and he wants to compete. I just know they are going to do big things together when she’s ready. Until then, bombproof Daisy carries my baby girl safely. As her Mom, my job is to keep her safe and to not hold her back. Her horses teach her so much: to be confident, to be responsible, to work hard, and even to fail. She can run a perfect pattern five times at practice and go in for the real deal and completely bomb it if she gets ahead of herself and wants to “go fast” over riding clean. I watched her do it last week at a run and oh she was MAD at Daisy. Her Aunt Kris and her grandparents were there, and she was going to show them how fast she was. Their start was all out of whack and she was blaming Daisy. I was able to sit her down and talk to her about what went wrong, what she could have done differently, and what’s really important: a fast run or a clean run. Pretty big stuff for a 5-year-old but lessons to carry her through life. Mind you, I’m STILL learning these lessons myself on my horse! The work never ends! Sometimes it’s hard, seeing her up there on that big horse but I’m lucky to have other amazing “horse moms” to calm my fears. Her trainer, Mindi Clarke at Bar Star, is an angel. I’m able to be “Mom” and work on my own horse while Bentley works on her riding and patterns, and Mindi is so knowledgeable about horses, kids, and all that goes with them. Even the meltdowns. These tiny horse girls and their emotions!

Help Me Grow Nebraska Finding the right health care resources can be overwhelming, especially for families with young children. Early childhood health systems are often disconnected and difficult to navigate, which can lead to inadequate support and services for families. Help Me Grow promotes early identification of developmental, behavioral, or educational concerns, then connects children to community-based services at no cost to their families. Help Me Grow is a national model that utilizes existing resources to address community issues and reduce disparities in early childhood health systems. An initial assessment of Lincoln and Lancaster County’s early childhood health care system revealed weak parent and family supports, and gaps in mental health services. In response, community stakeholders created a systems framework designed to target those issues. The Help Me Grow Nebraska initiative was launched in 2019 with a mission to nurture every child on the path to success. At the heart of Help Me Grow Nebraska is a centralized access point (CAP) that provides referrals for families to early childhood services in the area. The CAP allows users to call Help Me Grow through the United Way of the Midlands’ existing 2-1-1 Helpline, a free and confidential service available to families 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Help Me Grow Partners Children’s Hospital & Medical Center serves as the backbone organization for Help Me Grow Nebraska and oversees a Leadership team with over 40 individuals, representing 15 different Nebraska organizations. Help Me Grow Nebraska applies the collectiveimpact model and weaves together partner

assets to build greater communication and collaboration across the community. Other CAP partners include the Center on Children, Families and the Law, whose Answers4Families provides online support and information for Nebraskans with special needs, and the University of Nebraska Medical Center’s Munroe-Meyer Institute, which provides additional care coordination services to those needing higher levels of support. Collaborating organizations include the Prosper Lincoln Early Childhood’s Comprehensive Health Work Group, First Five Nebraska, the Nebraska Children and Families Foundation, the Nebraska Association for the Education of Young Children, the Lincoln Children’s Museum and Lincoln Littles. Area physicians and early childhood stakeholders from various state agencies, such as the Nebraska departments of Education and Health and Human Services, the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department and the Nebraska Early Development Network are also involved. How Does Help Me Grow Work? • Contact Help Me Grow by calling 2-1-1 for resources that address concerns about health, development, behavior, and learning. • A care coordinator will listen, provide support, and assess the needs of your child and family. • Help Me Grow will offer free screenings to help provide insight on your child’s developmental and behavioral skills. • A care coordinator will communicate the screening results with your family and provide appropriate referrals to local services and support. • Scheduled follow-ups will occur to inquire about previous referrals given and any concerns that your family may have. For more information, visit helpmegrownebraska.org or contact Rick Helweg, Help Me Grow Program Manager at rhelweg@childrensomaha.org.

With a new topic every week, kids at Spark are kept exploring, creating, and learning all summer long.

Prevent learning loss and keep your kids active and engaged all summer! At Spark we have days packed full of summer camp fun, like swimming and field trips, alongside STEAM programming to spark curiosity about the world we live in.

Facilitated by the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools, Spark learning aligns with LPS curriculum so children get a chance to freely explore more about what they have learned during the school year and get a sneak peek at what is on the horizon. The campers at Spark have focused on everything from how prosthetic limbs are engineered to how to grow plants with hydroponic systems. In week 6, they were introduced to the world of material engineering. Through rocks and artifacts, the campers learned about history, science, and the breakdown of materials through time. They were able to explore the different types of rocks and how they were formed, and even replicated artifacts they found on their visit to Morrill Hall. Strong As A Mother BY S A R A H C O L L I N S

“We live in a culture where motherhood is most often discussed in the context of raising children and not in the experience of the mother.” – You & I, As Mothers by Laura Prepon I stumbled upon this quote about a year ago when I was drowning in my own motherhood. In 2018, I gave birth to my son, Henry. Ten months later, I found out I was pregnant with twins. Even though I had quit my job to give the stay-at-home mom thing a whirl, I was not prepared for a future where I would be a mom of three kids all under two years old. The twins, Grace and Ruby, were born exactly 18 months after their brother (well, 18 months and one day for Ruby because she made her appearance after midnight). While reading Laura’s words, the kids were two and a half years and one year old. It was chaotic and I was searching for a way to feel like I had some power and control as a mother. I was also searching for my identity because becoming a mom had totally shifted how I saw myself. At this time I was staying at home with my trio of children and running a career coaching business where I help clients focus on using their Gallup CliftonStrengths. Through research, we know that every single human has natural, innate talent. The CliftonStrengths assessment helps identify that talent and by investing in yourself you can shape those talents into strengths. By leaning

30 |

fa l l 2021

into your strengths you can become more engaged at work, lead a team more effectively, and generally have less stress. As you can imagine, most people take the CliftonStrengths assessment at work for professional development. Up until this time I had kept my two worlds separate. Most of my life was spent at home changing diapers, fishing small objects from little mouths, and trying to convince my children that broccoli was delicious. Two days a week, however, I put on real clothes and talked to grown ups about their careers and businesses. Reading Laura’s words hit me like a brick wall. What would happen if moms spent time learning how to use their strengths in their motherhood? How could we create space to show up as our best selves for our partners, our children, and, maybe most importantly, ourselves? Could we thrive as mothers?

I decided to figure it out and started facilitating Strong As A Mother coaching groups where mothers learn about their CliftonStrengths and how to use those strengths in that role. The last year of learning about, discussing, and linking strengths to motherhood came with some interesting discoveries. Many moms rely so heavily on certain strengths that they don’t even realize they’re doing it. One mom in my coaching group had high Strategic as a strength, but at first she couldn’t see how she was using it as a mom. After discussing her strengths with her husband, it was clear she was constantly spotting relevant patterns and issues, then adjusting accordingly. By using CliftonStrengths, mothers can start to learn where they are showing up as superheroes and areas where they might need to lean on their partners, family, or community. When mothers spend time intentionally focusing on strengths, they can reprioritize, delegate, or simply let go

of some of the tasks, burdens, and challenges of motherhood. Mothers can actually feel empowered in their role. Looking at your CliftonStrengths takes time and attention. It’s likely your strengths will show up differently in your motherhood than they do in other areas of your life. Some of my own strengths easily transition from work to home, like Positivity. I naturally wake all of my children up with a smile and a hope that this new day will come with joy, playfulness, and fewer tantrums than yesterday. Other strengths proved harder to find, like WOO (Winning Others Over). Most people with this strength love meeting new people and being social. I literally grew my children in my body so they do not fill my WOO bucket. After some reflection, I realized the pandemic of 2020 combined with having three toddlers wreaked havoc on my social life and prohibited me from utilizing my WOO, thus leaving me feeling a bit depressed and lacking my normal energy. I discussed this with my partner and, working together, we created time in our schedule so weekly I can meet up with friends and then come home as a happier, more relaxed version of myself.

Be sure to check collinscareercoaching.com for registration details.

If you are a mom I encourage you to consider who you are as a human and what your innate strengths are. Utilizing the Gallup CliftonStrengths assessment will give you an insight into those strengths. While most of the research and literature regarding Strengths revolves around professional development, we can use this insight to reflect about who we are as mothers and then determine what we need (and who we need) to show up as our best selves. A lot depends on you, mama. Good thing you are strong as a mother.

Irish Social Dance (Ceili) Class A ceili (“KAY-lee”) is a social event with traditional Irish music and dancing. This style of group dancing has similarities to square dances, barn dances and contra dances, which are done in lines or circles. This class is for those 12 years and older; younger ages with other dance experience may be allowed with instructor approval. There is no upper age but all students should be able to move freely. Couples welcome but no partner required. New students may be paired with more experienced dancers to facilitate teaching/learning.
