Spring 2O22

FROM THE PUBLISHER

Dear Lincoln Kids Readers, It’s Spring 2020…. just kidding, but it does kind of feel that way. We don’t know whether to plan events, to go to events, to take the test, or to keep all those masks for another year. But one thing we can control is how we respond to all of these things. We can always choose kindness and positivity, instead of spreading more negativity into the world. Speaking of positives, there are so many summer camps for your kids to enjoy this year! And I say, let’s go for it. From Camp Sonshine to the Lincoln Children’s Zoo, your kids can still have those summer adventures. In this edition of Lincoln Kids, we hope you’ll find fun activities in our magazine and new businesses to connect with in-person. Our advertisers are truly incredible and they are doing everything they can to provide the most amazing opportunities for your kids. I know that times are tough and many things still feel hard, but you can bring the hope to your home and your child. You got this!

To brighter days ahead, THE LK TEAM

A Foundation for Learning

Emergency Assistance In partnership with school social workers, families can request funds for items like bus passes, medicine, help with car repairs, etc.

What’s New at Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools

Fund A Need An online platform for teachers, Fund a Need allows educators to easily create campaigns to crowdsource funds for special classroom projects.

From the first day of kindergarten, until they walk across the graduation stage, our top priority at the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools is to ensure students have every opportunity possible to reach their full potential.

Activities & Registrations We work with teachers and staff members to provide funds for students to enter competitions, attend special performances, and access resources that further enhance the learning happening in the classroom.

While tax dollars cover the basic costs of our public schools, there still are unmet needs. That’s where we come in. The Foundation raises funds for opportunities outside of what is already budgeted. We fund a wide range of projects and needs that enrich learning at LPS — everything from funding field trips to helping families in crisis, and so much more.

Athletic and Activity Uniforms & Fees Extracurriculars are an important part of the high school experience. We work with donors and LPS to provide assistance for equipment, uniforms, and other fees associated with extracurricular activities to level the playing field for those in need.

Here are some of the ways we support students, families, and educators at our schools.

Alumni Services We offer alumni services through our website. Even after your student graduates, we offer services like our reunion calendar and feature stories about alumni.

Driver’s Education The Foundation for LPS can cover the cost of driver’s education classes to ensure that students who want to learn how to drive can do so.

Special Project Funding

Focus Programs

Does your student have a project they need funding to complete? The Foundation has funds to help with project research and costs.

The Foundation funds unique experiences that are focused on their interests to help hone students’ technical skills. These partnerships with Southeast Community College, The Bay, UNL, Bryan Health, and more give students a head start on their career through dual credit, and challenge them to think bigger.

Scholarships We offer scholarships for graduating LPS seniors. The application process is fast and streamlined – apply for 90+ Foundation scholarships with one form.

Meet Mia BY T E S S C H I C O I N E

Mia, a spunky and fun-loving 11-year-old, has been beating the odds since the day she was born. The Lincoln Kids Team had the opportunity to sit down with Mia and her mom, Karleigh, to learn more about her story. The conversation left a mark on our hearts and we wanted to share it with everyone!

Hey Mia! Thanks so much for meeting with us today. Can you tell us what grade you are in and where you go to school? Mia: Hello! I’m Mia and I’m a 5th grader at Maxey Elementary.

Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. Mia, can you tell us about your medical journey? Mia: I was born with 22Q, which means you have either a deletion or an addition to your 22nd chromosome. It affects my eyes to the point where it is very hard for me to see. Many times it is described as Cat Eye Syndrome. I have gone through three eye surgeries in the last year and a half.

Have there been any major challenges throughout Mia’s journey? Karleigh (Mom): 22Q is a more common disease than most know. But, there are different levels to how it affects each person who is diagnosed. For Mia, it is a more mild case. When Mia was young, the doctors shared that she would not be able to walk. She defied the odds and took her first steps at age two. I used to be stressed by the idea of Mia struggling to make friends, but her outgoing personality gave her one of her best friends, Kylee.

4 |

s p r i n g 2022

Tell us about your best friend, Kylee. Mia: Kylee is awesome! She sits right behind me in school, which is the best thing ever. Kylee is able to read the longer pages in a book while I read the shorter ones, so that I do not need to hurt my neck by being close to the book. Kylee plays with me at recess even when I am unable to do some of the activities the other kids can do. She’s my best friend!

“Never second guess me.”

- Mia Stoynev

What are some of your favorite activities to do in school and out of school? Mia: My favorite subjects in school are math and science! I would say I am smarter than my mom! Karleigh: Did I mention that she has a sassy attitude that we all love? Mia: In the summer, I like to swim in my grandparents’ pool and practice volleyball with my mom. I would swim all day, every day if I could. I also was Mary in the Christmas play, and I hope to get involved with the Penguin Project this year.

She seems pretty fearless against the world, is that learned or just who she is? Karleigh: Mia had all odds thrown against her the moment she came into this world. I would say that her strength and determination come from who she is as a person. She defies all odds and shows the world that she is bigger than anything. Mia has taught me a lot. One thing I have learned from Mia is to be patient. She makes me slow down and appreciate the small things.

“Every day, through every challenge, Mia continues to make me so proud.” - Karleigh, Mia’s mom

Mia, we are so grateful that you shared your story with us! We look forward to watching you shine and seeing you achieve all of your goals.

We Are EarthFuel

help plants pull (sequester) carbon from the atmosphere into the ground naturally. Think global, buy local compost; our planet will thank you later.

What Is EarthFuel Compost?

How Can I Obtain EarthFuel Compost?

Compost is important. It is not dirt or soil; it is better! Compost is a soil additive that is abundant in organic matter. When compost is mixed with soil, it creates a nutrient filled amendment for your landscaping needs.

EarthFuel compost may be obtained for no cost at the North 48th Street Transfer Station. This site is only for small vehicles and/or trailers that do not exceed 60 square feet of cargo area. The material is available on a first come, first served basis. Individuals must self-load the compost by hand.

How Is EarthFuel Compost Made? Produced by the City of Lincoln’s Solid Waste Management Division, EarthFuel compost is created from grass clippings, leaves and shredded wood. EarthFuel contains many nutrients and organic matter. Its earthy aroma looks similar to dark topsoil. EarthFuel is tested by an independent lab to ensure the product has reached stability to allow our customers to make informed decisions about their landscaping needs. If you are curious about the latest lab results, they can be found at lincoln.ne.gov/compost. Where Can I Use Compost? Compost can be used in your garden, flower beds, as a top dressing to rejuvenate your lawn, and more. It has numerous benefits and uses which include: •

Saving money by reducing the need for fertilizers and pesticides.

Improving soil fertility and increasing water infiltration.

Preventing the erosion of valuable nutrientrich topsoil.

It is important to realize that soil must have the capacity to function as a living organism. Without healthy soil, there is no way to sustain life as we know it. Healthy soil will also

Love & Learning A Teacher Feature with Matt and Machaela McMullin BY S O P H I A M E S S I N E O

For this edition of our Lincoln Kids Teacher Feature, we met with Matt and Machaela McMullin, teachers in Lincoln who also happen to be husband and wife. In the years that the McMullins have been working, they — like all teachers — have had to constantly adjust and readjust to rapidly shifting technological and social constraints. Still, in spite of the challenging nature of their chosen careers, Matt and Machaela consider themselves lucky to teach – and to learn from — their students every day. The pair sat down and reflected on their parallel journeys to becoming educators, and the gratifying experiences they have had working day-to-day with the next generation. Matt and Machaela met each other during their very first course as freshmen at the University of Nebraska. They don’t recall what exactly was on the syllabus in those earliest days, but they do remember that they kept seeing one another around school. “After that, we had all of our classes together,” explains Machaela. The smaller, more intimate education community on campus became the perfect place for learning, and love, and love for learning, to take root. Now, with degrees completed, and with three years of teaching under their belts, they recognize in themselves the same things they felt then — their love for getting to know new people, forging new connections, and embracing the energy of working with kids — and those things have propelled them to where they are today. “It’s all too much fun,” Matt says, laughing. LK: What made you want to pursue teaching? Matt: My mom was the one who suggested that I would be a good teacher. It wasn’t something

20 |

s p r i n g 2022

I’d thought about. I have two younger siblings, so growing up, I was always leading, explaining, and educating. Knowing how to work with kids came naturally. But after my mom suggested it, I realized that it was also something I could do as a career. And it turned out pretty well! Machaela: Originally, I was on track to become a nurse. Like Matt, teaching wasn’t something I had considered until someone else suggested that I was good with kids. Throughout high school, I had worked in a daycare. But when I became a full-time college student, I found that I missed and appreciated the positive, energetic impact that the kids had on my day. I thought about it and came to realize that as a teacher, I could find the personal connections I had hoped to find as a nurse. I liked being with kids, and I liked helping them understand things. Now, after several years in the classroom, I feel like teaching is my calling. LK: What is the most rewarding part of teaching? Machaela: I love getting to see my students every day, and it’s rewarding to have a relationship with them — to see their faces light up when they come through the door in the morning, or to see them take a new step, academically or behaviorally. Ultimately, it’s a two-way street. I love watching them grow up, and they love seeing my excitement about the progress they have made.

Matt: Building a good connection with the students is always rewarding. I especially like comparing the progress they’ve made from the beginning of the year to the end. LK: Tell us something surprising about teaching. Machaela: I was surprised by the time and effort we need to put into teaching to be successful. I’d say that most people don’t understand the time commitment. Yes, we work through the regular school hours of 8:00 AM - 3:00 PM, but most teachers get to school early, and stay there until 4:30 PM or later. We are constantly getting ready for the next day, and the next lesson plan. And, as an elementary teacher, you are teaching every subject, so you have to plan for every hour of the day, and everything has to be incredibly specific and thought-out. Matt: I would absolutely agree with that. As with any job, there is a lot going on behind the scenes that people wouldn’t expect. You are always planning. You can’t wing it, or show up without a blueprint for the day. LK: What would you like the community to know about teaching? Machaela: The kids are bright and hard-working. They really want to do well, and that is such a good indicator of what the future holds for everyone. I love to see former students that have grown up, and moved on to middle school, and to hear all the amazing things they are doing. Matt: It is such a rewarding job. There are a lot of good moments, and the kids definitely like coming to school more than they would ever admit. There is a good deal of progress that gets made, and as educators, we love to see that. In general, most teachers care deeply about their job, and their students, and genuinely want their classroom to be a place of growth and inspiration. Plus, we get to see the at-school version of kids, which we know is very different from home. People would be amazed

by all their great ideas, and their hard work. We’re lucky to witness it every day. Get Involved Not everyone can become a teacher. But everyone can help participate in improving education. If Matt and Machaela have inspired you to get involved, there are many ways to do so: •

Support your child’s teacher by gifting classroom supplies, volunteering, or prepping activities

TeamMates is always looking for mentors

Ask a PTO group for any volunteer positions

Speakers are often needed to present to various types of classes

“There never was a person that did anything worth doing who did not really receive more than he gave.” - Henry Ward Beecher

Matt and Machaela believe that the future is bright, thanks to their students. Let’s all find ways to make this year brighter. Whether in an educational setting or somewhere else in the community, find something worth doing in 2022; learn from it, grow with it, and do something with it.

Play Is Not Canceled BY J A N E E N WA R D

Due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic, the Lincoln Chapter of the Nebraska Association of the Education of Young Children has decided to cancel the 2022 Early Childhood Celebration, usually held in April. I know that many people in the community have enjoyed that event for more than 30 years, and we are confident that it will be held in the future. We still want to celebrate the National Week of the Young Child (April 2-8, 2022) and keep in mind… play is not canceled! It is more important than ever for parents, early childhood professionals, and everyone in the community to meet the needs of young children, who thrive on meaningful handson experiences that engage their senses. In Early Childhood, we know that play touches all aspects of children’s lives. While they are learning about their world, and expanding vocabulary in interactions with caring adults and peers, children are developing physical strength and coordination, and practicing appropriate social skills and self-regulation. Play encourages creativity and allows children to practice solving problems.

What is your role? What can you do to help? Instead of limiting children’s play, encourage play! • Talk and listen to children; focus your full attention on them. • Read with them; help them write and draw. • Sing with them; create music together or listen to live music. • Let children choose what to play, and when you are invited to play with them, join in! • Help children explore materials that are interesting to see, hear, feel, smell (and taste, if possible). • While you play, find items to count, sort, and group together, or talk about color, size, or texture of items – how are they the same or different? • Go outside! Nature has a lot to teach us as we play. • Take trips to places in the community that children love (zoo, museum, library, park). Play isn’t just for children! Adults benefit from play, too. Give yourself permission to take time to unwind and enjoy life. In this time of uncertainty from dayto-day, one thing is certain – children need to play!

Finding Your Resources BY J A C E N O B L E

We know that COVID-19 has affected many families in different ways, which is why we want to shine a light on a program available to assist families in need in our community. The Lincoln Community Baby Closet offers outreach programs that provide free clothing, newborn baby care items, diapers, and formula under three different programs: The Lincoln Community Baby Closet, Newborn Needs Request, and the Diaper and Formula Pantry.

Everyone needs help sometimes. The Lincoln Community Baby Closet is a program that began with new mothers in mind. It is a free public store that offers clothing and other items for children ranging in age from 3 months to 24 months, and it is open four days monthly at 2311 North Cotner Blvd, Suite H.

26 |

First Monday, 5:00-7:00 PM

Second Saturday, 9:30-11:00 AM

Third Wednesday, 9:00-10:30 AM

Fourth Sunday, 1:30-3:00 PM

s p r i n g 2022

The Newborn Needs Request service is reserved for infants ranging from birth to 3 months, new mothers nearing their due date, and caregivers of newborns. Items you can receive range from clothing and baby care products to diapers and wet wipes. To benefit from the Newborn Needs Request, watch for them to post open requests on Facebook, or submit a request through their Facebook Messenger. Typically, someone will respond within 24 hours. Another resource for new mothers and infants is the Diaper and Formula Pantry. It operates outside of the public hours of Lincoln Community Baby Closet and items are available for porch pick-up seven days a week. Follow the same format as with Newborn Needs Request through Facebook Messenger. To get information about any of the services provided by the Lincoln Community Baby Closet, visit facebook.com/ lincolncommunitybabycloset.

Dreams Really Do Come True Every year in February, a magical thing happens. And no, it’s not Temperature Tuesday at Runza — which, in all fairness, is magical, but not the thing we’re thinking of.

Wish Kid Jack and dad Eric recount their incredible experience with Jack’s wish to be a Husker player.

You see, every February, hundreds of people from across the state of Nebraska come together to attend the Wish Ball, the yearly gala celebrating the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Nebraska. For anyone unfamiliar with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and their goals, allow us to make the introduction. Throughout Nebraska, there are hundreds of young people — let’s call them “Wish Kids” — who find themselves facing critical illnesses. The team at Make-A-Wish meets with them, identifies a wish they can grant, and partners with donors and community members to make those wishes come true — because “a wish is an integral part of a child’s treatment journey.” Wishes can help children build the physical and emotional strength needed to fight a critical illness. These wishes range from living as a zookeeper for a day, to visiting Walt Disney World, to receiving a new play structure, to meeting Ndamukong Suh. In Nebraska, Make-A-Wish is proud that 82% of every dollar raised goes toward the Wish Granting Program. To date, they have granted over 2,900 wishes, with no signs of stopping — there are currently over 150 Nebraska children whose wishes are waiting, and that number grows every day. Over 300 volunteers are committed to making wishes come true.

s p r i n g 2022

How to Refer Someone to Make-A-Wish Anyone can nominate a kid to receive a wish from Make-A-Wish. If you know someone who could use a wish granted, and they fall under the criteria below, reach out to Make-A-Wish Nebraska and start a wish journey today. •

Child must be 2 1/2 years, and not yet 18 years, and be diagnosed by a doctor as having a critical illness (cases vary)

Wishes are granted regardless of sex, race, religion, or income

Medical eligibility determined by physician

Wish Granter volunteers come to the wish family’s house to help determine the wish kid’s one true wish

A Pot o’ Gold for St. Paddy’s Day This craft is easy, colorful, and sure to get little leprechauns excited for a lucky day!

1

Start with having the kids paint rainbow stripes on the front of a paper plate.

2

Let dry and flip it over to paint the back as well. You can always use a blow dryer if you’re impatient!

3

Grab a pair of scissors and start at the outside of the plate and cut spirals. Cut out a black pot of gold and glue it to the end of the plate.

4

Glue on yellow circles to make the gold; don’t be afraid to add some glitter! Poke a hole in the middle of the plate and add a string to hang it up. Source: craftymorning.com

Put your solo socks to use this spring. Materials — sock — large pom pom — googly eyes — ribbon — clear rubber bands — rice — lavender or essential oils, if desired Step One: Fill your sock with about a cup of rice, depending on the size of your sock. Feel free to add lavender, or anything else to make your bunny smell beautiful. Tie clear rubber bands twice to create a head, one on the neck and one on top of the head. Step Two: Glue eyes, nose (two small crossed bits of ribbon), and pom pom tail on the back. Tie a bow around the sock bunny. Step Three: Cut the top of the sock in half to create ears on the sock bunny. Snip off the corners to make the ears slightly rounded, and done! So cute, right?

This easy and adorable Easter craft is the missing piece to your Easter decorations. These sock bunnies can add fun color and a homemade feel to your holiday!
