FROM THE PUBLISHER Since it’s 2020, Karla and I agreed that we would just add more “unplanned” events to our year. For Karla, this meant selling Lincoln Kids and taking her dreams on the road with her sweet family. For me, it meant purchasing Lincoln Kids and doing my best to connect families to some of the most wonderful experiences Lincoln has to offer.

WE DID A THING

For those of you who may not be familiar with me, here are some random + fun facts: •

I’ve been a mama for 17 years.

I have 5 kids running, flipping, cartwheeling, cooking, and gaming in my house from ages 5 - 17.

Speaking of running, I like to run (most days) and I’m on marathon #17.

I spend my time with a handsome, bearded fellow named Daniel. He’s an awesome dad and bonus dad!

I own Eleanor Creative, a marketing and branding firm, in Lincoln, NE.

Most everyone on my team has been with me (in some way, shape, or form) for over a decade. They are the heartbeat of what I do, and I couldn’t do this without them.

I dislike driving a car, so when we meet, I’ll probably show up on my bicycle.

I can cook a mean breakfast but you’ll most likely find me supporting local restaurants for lunch and dinner.

I’m a “for you” kind of person. I want others to succeed, feel loved and valued.

Your new Winter Edition was planned, crafted, written, and designed by Mackenzie Slivka, Sheena Rancourt, Sean Flattery, Jacque Genovese, Jodi Richey, Kat Esser and yours truly. I want to express my gratitude to them, as they have been dedicated to make this a smooth transition for everyone. They are talented and full of heart – what more could a leader ask for? My promise to you is that I’ll always be working hard for your families and your organizations. Think of me as your cheerleader, encourager, and creative magazine publisher.

THE LK TEAM

I want to wish each and every one of you a safe and happy holiday season. We hope you enjoy the old and the new with this Winter Edition of Lincoln Kids. Until Spring,

Christine Weeks, Owner / Publisher

We understand that our patients and their families are busy people, and we are too. We work hard to give you the treatment you need and get you in and out in a timely manner.

WITH

D R . E M I LY W I L L E T T

At Lincoln Orthodontics we are real. Real people, real talk, real nice, and real results! We try to make your visit as soothing as possible and we want you to smile and laugh a lot with our team. Lincoln Orthodontics treats our patients how we want to be treated. We give you the facts, the best possible care, and we have fun with it. We are going to give it to you straight while we straighten your teeth. Will Braces Hurt? Umm… a little. All orthodontic treatment causes some discomfort, regardless of the type of treatment, but remember, everyone is unique, and not all discomfort is pain. Most patients— kids or adults— would say braces or Invisalign are uncomfortable, but not necessarily painful. Luckily, it always gets better and the results are worth it! We’re sorry, we’re not trying to be a pain in the teeth. Don’t worry though. We work extra hard to be gentle and we have our own unique ways to ease the discomfort through fun prizes and community partnerships for goodies that our patients can enjoy. When Do We Want to See You? Ideally, at 7-years-old, but whenever you have questions or concerns, we’d love to meet you! You’ll be happy to know that a referral to the orthodontist from your family dentist is no longer necessary and orthodontic exams are more like a well-child check at the doctor. Dr. Willett wants to meet you, make sure everything is going well, create a relationship, and get you on your way to a healthy and beautiful smile. An early appointment with Dr.

While metal braces are the most common type of orthodontic treatment, you have several other options, including Invisalign and clear braces. KIDS HELPING KIDS BY M I N DY L U B E C K W I S H & D E V E L O P M E N T C O O R D I N AT O R , M A K E -A-W I S H N E B R A S K A

Since its inception, Make-A-Wish®️ Nebraska has granted over 2,800 life-changing wishes to children fighting critical illnesses across the state. Due to COVID-19, more wishes are waiting than ever before. Currently, there are over 140 wishes, 22 in the Lincoln region alone, waiting to be granted. But even in these uncertain times, you can help bring local wish kids hope for a better tomorrow because, now more than ever, hope is essential. Kids For Wish Kids®️ is a program managed by kids, for kids. Inspiring kids to have an impact in their community, the Kids For Wish Kids®️ program engages students, schools, and youth organizations in philanthropy and service activities in partnership with MakeA-Wish®️ Nebraska. The program encourages community service, leadership, volunteerism, and teamwork. It builds team spirit and gives students hands-on experience fundraising

to help create life-changing wishes for kids fighting critical illnesses. The Kids For Wish Kids®️ program is completely customizable to the way you are looking to get involved! From bake sales, lemonade stands, garage sales, or Make-A-Wish®️ paper stars – the possibilities are endless! Over three years ago, Rainan decided to host a Pepsi stand. Inspired by YouTube®️ videos of John Cena, who has granted countless wishes, Rainan initially wanted to offer Pepsi at his stand for free, but his parents talked to him about the importance of donating to charity. One of Rainan’s best friends, Ollie, had received a wish from Make-A-Wish®️ Nebraska several years ago. Due to this connection, Rainan decided he wanted to help Make-A-Wish®️, and to date, Rainan has raised over $13,000 to help grant wishes! Rainan’s Pepsi stand sells goods provided by Pepsi Cola of Lincoln, Norland Pure Water, and Baker’s Candies. These companies have generously donated supplies for Rainan’s stand, just like Rainan generously donates all the money he has raised. To learn more about the Kids For Wish Kids®️ program and to get started, please contact Mindy Lubeck at mlubeck@nebraska.wish.org or call 402-475-9474.

KINDNESS IS ALWAYS IN SEASON a look inside Capital Humane Society CARA

BY CHARLEEN ENGBERG DIRECTOR OF OUTREACH & SPECIAL PROJECTS, C A P I TA L H U M A N E S O C I E T Y

Kindness is always in season and it seems like a good topic to examine as we prepare to bring in a new year. Some of the kindest people I know are volunteers at Capital Humane Society. I reached out to them to learn what they had to say on the subject of kindness and why it matters. As expected, they provided valuable insights. Hanna is one of our dedicated dog walker volunteers. No matter the weather, she arrives on schedule with a smile to provide dogs in our adoption program with the exercise they need. Knowing our pets are properly looked after while we are away helps us to enjoy our holiday. And of course, pets are happy to have companionship they can count on when their family is away. “Helping others is gratifying,” Hanna added. “It reminds me that there is purpose in my life and that I can make a difference for someone else.” Cara is another outstanding volunteer for Capital Humane Society. She provides foster care that is vital for pets in need.

6 |

w i n t e r 2020

Cara feels that acts of kindness can be simple and do not have to involve a lot of planning or commitment; inquiring about someone’s day or sharing a sincere smile are easy and can have a big impact on others. According to Cara, kind acts help others feel included in the world by allowing them all to be seen, heard, and understood. “Helping others is my favorite way to feel like I am making a difference,” she said. “It also allows me to put myself in others’ shoes, which I feel makes me a more compassionate human being.” Everyone has occasions where they can use a helping hand. Even Cara, who explained that some friends let her family borrow a window air conditioner for two weeks last summer when it got hot. The cool air was a boon to her family, personal pets, and foster kittens. Hanna and Cara are excellent examples of individuals who make considerate choices that result in a kinder world for animals and people. Like them, we can all choose to be positive role models for our family, friends, and neighbors, who will witness and learn from our actions. Dogs, cats, and critters deserve and appreciate all the kindness that comes their way. Providing companion animals with proper exercise, training, and care is both the right thing to do and a kindness. Learn more on our website, capitalhumanesociety.org.

Spark Joy this Holiday Season with STEAM Fun, Curiosity, and Problem-solving for the Kids Welcome to Spark! We are an immersive learning program and summer camp, brought to you by the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools. We love to connect kids with high-energy, handson opportunities to create, explore, and be inspired through science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM). The Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools created Spark because kids are deciding if they identify with these areas of interest as early as 3rd grade. By introducing STEAM early and often, in a way that feels like play, more kids are likely to pursue a future career in these fields. Kids love what we do during the summer so we decided to carry that magic through to the holiday season. Our team has been scouring the city to bring parents and grandparents the first-annual, one-of-a-kind Spark Holiday Gift Guide for kids interested in STEAM. This free download is packed full of our favorite local gift ideas, everything from free experiences to high-end toys, for school-aged kids. Download the free gift guide at sparksummer.org/holiday. If your kids love these gift ideas, they will love our summer learning camp too! Learning opportunities, like Spark, are critical to the continued academic and personal development of kids all year round.

We also understand that working parents want to make sure their kids are safe, engaged in learning, and having fun during those long summer days. We offer a non-stop Spark Summer Learning camp with education and play for kids in grades K - 5, including: •

Hands-on learning

Convenient, flexible hours

Breakfast, lunch, and a snack

GETTING CRAFTY BY GRETCHEN M. GARRISON

This winter, we may all end up stuck inside. If you are alone, this can mean leisurely enjoying a good book while watching snow flutter from the sky. When you have kids at home, not being able to go anywhere often means chaos. How can you plan ahead, so that at least part of the time involves activities that result in peace and tranquility? Develop a craft corner. Now before you dismiss what I am saying, please understand this. I am craft challenged. While I used to scrapbook (before I had kids) and do have decent handwriting, my kids would confirm that I am not the best with a glue gun. Yet my kids had fun crafting things. Here are some suggestions on how to set yourself up for success.

1

Make sure that your supplies are contained.

And that your kids can put them away themselves. The point is not creating more work for yourself. Instead involve the kids. If you have a smaller space, pick supplies that can be double duty. Cotton balls, q-tips, soap (for bubble prints) and even cereal (Cheerios make a fun “O Christmas tree” picture) can double as crafting supplies. Have a bin of colors or markers or colored pencils plus construction paper, scissors and glue. That is enough to start the creative process. Shop the thrift store if you do have room

2 for more materials.

Let other people’s grand intentions provide fun for your family. Also think outside of the box. Old muffin tins work great for mixing paint. Pretty plates can make fun mosaic projects for older kids.

10 |

w i n t e r 2020

3 Give your kids a “craft-of-the-month box.” This way you are not spending quite as much in December, but you can have fun all year. Sometimes we run out of time to do crafts, but once every thirty days is possible even for the busiest schedules. Feeling overwhelmed? Several Lincoln locations do offer on-site activities. But due to current circumstances, they are also selling crafts to complete at home. At both Paint Yourself Silly locations, patrons can pick up pottery and paints to complete projects at home, then they can drop them off at the store to have the pieces fired. At Urban Legends Art, bags to complete specific crafts are available. Follow along with their Facebook page to know what is available. Across the street, Lux Center for the Arts does sell clay to take home, but even better, they offer classes if one prefers to leave the mess. At MakIt-TakIt, all sorts of possibilities can be purchased. Shop online and pick it up in person, or stroll up and down the aisles to find what fits your family. Certain crafts can be completed in-person, by appointment. They also sell fabric and yarn. At the moment, the Lincoln Libraries are unable to offer their Maker Space events, but they do offer limited 3-D printing services. Also if you are interested in a specific art focus, the librarians are glad to bundle non-fiction (and even fiction) books to help you make your crafting dreams come true. Contact them to learn more about these services. Gretchen M. Garrison is a homeschooling mom of four (including a senior!) who also loves sharing adventures that can be found in her home state. She has written three books which include Detour Nebraska: Historic Destinations; Natural Wonders, A History Lover’s Guide to Lincoln; and 100 Things to Do in Lincoln Before You Die. These books are available at many local places as well as online.

FIGHT FLU, TOGETHER Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln has all the tips on staying flu-free. As if we didn’t have enough to worry about, flu season is upon us. If you’ve been “iffy” about flu shots in the past, this is a good year to get motivated. It’s likely that flu viruses and the virus that causes COVID-19 will both spread this fall and winter. What can you do about it? Here’s what health experts say about the flu:

Duration of a Flu “Season” Flu viruses are most common during the fall and winter, often beginning in October, peaking between December and February, but can last as late as May. With major holidays coming up, people can be tempted to let their guards down about recommended health measures like wearing a mask around members outside one’s household, in crowds (indoors and outdoors), and social distancing. That can make us more vulnerable to both COVID-19 and the flu. Don’t Wait. Get your family flu shots as soon as you can. It takes about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body and provide protection against the flu. The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year.

Where to Go? Flu vaccines are being offered in a variety of convenient locations like HyVee, Super Saver, Russ’s Market, Walgreens, CVS, the LincolnLancaster County Health Department, walk-in and urgent care clinics, safety net clinics, and primary care doctors’ offices. Some locations are even offering drive up services. If you get a flu shot somewhere besides your primary physician, be sure to let them know so they can update your records. Seasonal flu and COVID-19 are not the same. Influenza (flu) and COVID-19 are both contagious respiratory illnesses, but they are caused by different viruses. COVID-19 is caused by infection with a new coronavirus (called SARS-CoV-2) and flu is caused by infection with influenza viruses, but initial symptoms can be similar. Doctors and scientists are working to estimate the mortality rate Prevent you of COVID-19, but from getting sick. at present, it is Studies show it can also thought to be reduce the severity of illness in people who substantially higher get vaccinated but still (possibly 10 times get sick. or more) than that of most strains of the flu. Recommendations For the 2020-2021 flu season, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends an annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older.

Veggies, fitness, and flu shots – a good prescription for a healthier winter for you and your family.

KNOW THE BENEFITS OF A FLU SHOT

Protect people with chronic health conditions.

Protect pregnant women during and after pregnancy.

Speaking of good health habits, food choices and physical activity play a role in maintaining your immune system and your mental health. To help combat the feeling of isolation and loneliness that can set in from being cooped up – whether it’s a pandemic, the flu season, or a harsh winter, there is a body of evidence that shows exercise and healthy eating improves mood and fights depression.

Protect the people around you, including those who are more vulnerable, if you get a shot.

Reduce the risk of flu-associated hospitalization for children, working age adults and older adults.

Save a child’s life. Thousands of children die every year from the flu.

Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the health, wellness, and fitness of Lincoln’s children, families, and seniors. We help to protect community health by providing science and evidencebased information.

Nurturing and responsive care builds child resiliency in the brain and is the key to supporting healthy brain development. How do you know if you and your child are on track? There are two key elements to child brain development. Watch & Celebrate — Pay attention to your child’s overall development and celebrate their developmental milestones, such as taking a first step, waving “bye bye” or learning to share with other children. When your child may not be reaching their milestones, reach out and talk to your child’s doctor.

Small, Daily Connections — Practice small moments throughout the day where you intentionally connect with your child. This could include reading a book together, playing peek-a-boo, or listening and responding to their sounds or chatter. The small moments add up to build healthy, resilient brains. Learn the Signs. Act Early. From birth to 5 years old, your child should reach milestones in how he or she plays, learns, speaks, acts and moves. Reaching these milestones is a sign that your child’s development is on track. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Learn the Signs. Act Early. program encourages parents to learn the signs of healthy development; monitor their child’s physical, cognitive and emotional growth; and to take action when there is a concern. This program offers several tools to make developmental monitoring practical and easy. CDC’s Milestone Tracker app provides a fun and easy way for parents to track their child’s early developmental milestones. Easy As 1, 2, 3! Children are born ready to learn, and they depend on parents, family members, and other caregivers as their first teachers to develop the right skills to become independent and lead healthy and successful lives. How the brain grows is strongly affected by the child’s experiences with other people and the world. Nurturing care for the mind is critical for brain growth. Here are three practical ways to help you get started:

1 Smile Back — A simple smile from you

helps your child feel safe and secure. Smiling at your baby releases hormones that are good for emotional development and create strong bonds and healthy attachment between you and your child.

2 Make Eye Contact — When parents’ and

babies’ eyes meet, something very special happens – an emotional connection is established. Making eye contact with your baby can also boost their learning and communication skills.

3 Listen to Sounds — It is important for your

baby to become tuned in to the speech sounds and everyday sounds that they may hear. As your baby develops, they should not only turn but also search for the sound they hear. Listening to sounds will help them to build up the listening skills which are critical for speech development.

123 Connect with Me is led by Children’s Center for the Child & Community, the community outreach team for Children’s Hospital & Medical Center, and is driven by dedicated partner organizations serving families across the community. To see all partners dedicated to this movement visit: 123connectwithme.org. For anyone interested in getting involved in spreading the message of early childhood brain development and the importance of developmental monitoring, please reach out to us at contact@123connectwithme.org.

It really is as simple as 1, 2, 3. The more these simple actions are practiced with children, the stronger the impact on their growing brains.

Books to grow With

Hi, my name is Karrie, and I’m the Youth Librarian at Anderson and Bethany Branch Libraries. The number one thing I am missing during this pandemic is Storytime. There is something special about the library on a Storytime morning – the sound of little feet running in to see their favorite librarian, the squeals when someone sees a new book to take home, and the silence that falls as everyone settles in to listen to a story. We just can’t replicate that online. While I am missing that experience, here are some of my favorite read-alouds to share with the kids in your life.

There’s a Monster in Your Book by Tom Fletcher A cute blue monster has infiltrated your book. Readers have to tickle, blow, tilt, and shake the monster until he leaves. This interactive picture book gets all ages in on the action until you realize the book might in fact be the best place for a monster to live! Time to get him back. Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin In case you ever wanted to have a Dragon Taco Party there are two things you must know. One, dragons love tacos: big, little, beef, chicken, any kind of taco. And two, they absolutely hate spicy salsa. This hilarious picture book takes you through all the steps you need to know to throw the best Dragon Taco Party and, of course, what might happen if you don’t read your salsa jar correctly. So much fun, he wrote a sequel! The Best Pet of All by David LaRochelle Like many kids, this boy wants a dog. And like many parents, this mother says no; dogs are too loud, and too messy. Then, in a moment of mom-weakness, she agrees to a pet dragon. With cute retro graphics, we learn that dragons don’t make very good pets. And the only thing that can save them is a dog! My favorite twist in this book comes at the end, when the dragon and boy give each other a thumbs up. I am always eager to see if my listeners catch on: the two were in cahoots! After the Fall by Dan Sanat Everybody knows the story of Humpty Dumpty. But this picture book delves into the life of Humpty after he’s fallen off that infamous wall. He tapes himself up, but he can’t get over his fear of falling. And because of that, he misses out on his favorite hobby: bird watching. The beauty of this book is not just in its wonderful illustrations but in how much kids can relate to the idea of facing your fears. I’ve had anywhere from preschoolers to upper elementary aged kids eager to see if Humpty can summon the courage to climb that wall again.

READ FOR CHANGE BY VICKI WOOD Y O U T H S E R V I C E S C O O R D I N AT O R , LINCOLN CITY LIBRARIES

The Read Woke Challenge was created by Cicely Lewis, a teacher, writer, librarian and Person of Color with a “passion for promoting literacy in nontraditional ways” at the Meadowcreek High School Media Center in Norcross, GA, where she works. She was recently chosen as School Library Journal’s 2020 School Librarian of the Year. In Lewis’ words: “Read Woke is a movement. It is a feeling. It is a style. It is a form of education. It is a call to action; it is our right as lifelong learners. It means arming yourself with knowledge in order to better protect your rights. Knowledge is power and no one can take it away. It means learning about others so that you can treat people with the respect and dignity that they deserve no matter their religion, race, creed, or color.” What makes a book “woke?” Cicely Lewis determined that a Woke Book must:

24 |

Challenge a social norm

Give voice to the voiceless

Provide information about a group that has been disenfranchised

Seek to challenge the status quo

Have a protagonist from an underrepresented or oppressed group

w i n t e r 2020

Our reading challenge software provider, Beanstack, has partnered with Cicely Lewis to make a challenge based on her work to get children, teens, and adults to read more diversely. The Read Woke Challenge in Beanstack includes 10 categories of books.

African American Voices

Impoverished / Homeless Voices

LBGTQ+ Voices

Asian American Voices

Female Voices

Diverse Abilities

Hispanic American Voices

Native American Voices

Immigration

Social Injustice

For the past three years our community has stepped up to record millions of minutes of reading for our Winter Reading Challenges. This year we’re asking our community to go beyond a minutes challenge; to read beyond what they are accustomed to, to get a little uncomfortable, maybe a bit more enlightened, and to see the world through an unfamiliar lens. This challenge asks you to be a lifelong learner, to start where you are and share this challenge with your family, your friends, your book group, church group, or coworkers. It’s especially important that we share these books with our children, so we can pass on to them the importance of kindness, empathy, and respect for others. This challenge will be available starting in November, and run through the end of January. Visit Lincoln City Libraries website at lincolnlibraries.org for more information.

GROUNDED IN FAITH A K-12 Experience Unlike Any Other At Lutheran Schools of Lincoln, we offer a K-12 experience grounded in faith formation. What sets us apart is the size, experience, approach, and level of attention each child receives. You see, we are a small-town school district in a big town environment. We pride ourselves on setting every child up for success academically, physically, mentally, and spiritually. We enjoy the diversity and backgrounds of our families and students because we believe that creates openness and understanding. And, we appreciate that we aren’t held to one-size-fits-all learning levels because every student is unique in who they are and how they learn. We uphold academics, teaching a Christian worldview, a family-centric campus, and a stable educational foundation with over 350 years of combined experience in Lutheran education serving 1,000 students in the greater Lincoln area. Embracing this philosophy across every school in our campus elevates our students to higher educational standards and higher learning so they have the best chance at being successful in life.

The Lutheran Schools of Lincoln Campuses Christ Lincoln Schools “Committed to leading students to love Jesus, love others, and love learning.“ Serving children ages 8 weeks through grade 5. christlincolnschools.org.

Faith Lutheran School “Growing in Christ, Sent to Serve.” Serving children ages 18 months through grade 5. faithlincoln.org.

Messiah Lutheran School “Inspiring. Growing. Serving. Together.” Serving children ages 3 through grade 5. messiah4u.org.

Trinity Lutheran School “Connecting People to Christ in His Word and Love.” Serving children ages 18 months through grade 5. trinityoflincoln.org.

Lincoln Lutheran Middle School & High School “Where students can ‘Be More.’” Serving grades 6 through 12. lincolnlutheran.org.

Our Students Come from All Walks of Life Our name is Lutheran, but our students come from a variety of faith backgrounds. Lutheran schools help young people grow into wellrounded, spiritually grounded adults. We don’t require you to be a member of one of our churches. In fact, you don’t need to be a member of any church to attend a school on our campus. Regardless of your background, at Lutheran Schools of Lincoln every child in our childcare program and every student in our schools is part of our family, period.

Check Our Campuses Out for Yourself “As soon as we walked into Trinity Lutheran for the first time, I immediately loved it! I loved how small it was. I loved the children’s artwork displayed proudly outside of each classroom. I loved how each teacher seemed to know each student by name and that they interacted with each other in the hallway as they passed. I loved how each student had a smile on their face and truly seemed happy that they were at school. By the end of the tour, we knew we had already made the decision of sending our daughter to Trinity Lutheran.” -T H E S T E G G S F A M I LY

We invite you to our open house journey in February where you will have a chance to explore all four elementary schools, and middle school and high school. Details will be coming out soon. Handwriting? WHAT ABOUT B Y A N N A C L A U S E N , M S , E L E M E N TA R Y E D U C AT I O N FORMER KINDERGARTEN TEACHER

Handwriting is a key component to elementary education because thinking and writing occur concurrently. Having automaticity in the ability to write letters allows children to express themselves in writing. These skills carry over into spelling and mathematics. PREREQUISITES: Hand Dominance/Pencil Grip Skills that need to be mastered prior to writing include the ability to cross the midline, the understanding of directional terms, utilization of both hands, and the mastery of identifying similarities and differences in forms. Next, determine which hand is dominant. If the right hand is dominant the paper should be slanted to the left. If the left hand is dominant the paper should slant to the right. Placing a large 3-ring binder under the paper helps a left-handed child from hooking their wrist. Pencil grip has developmental stages. The tripod grip should be used with school-age children. Have children hold a small object with the last 3 fingers to develop finger strength. The song,” Picking Up my Pencil,” on Rock Tap and Learn, CD is a fun way to practice pencil grip and check for correct finger placement. Beginning Writing Beginning writing with a thick pencil, crayon, or marker. Chalkboards, dry erase boards, sand trays, and shaving cream are all enjoyable ways to practice writing. It is important to be intentional with instruction. Directional handwriting needs to be mastered early in the writing process. On Get Reading

for School Music CD, the song “Where Do You Start Your Letters” reinforces these skills. Concepts that need to be introduced prior to teaching lower-case letters include top to bottom, left to right, above to below, open to closed, ascending to medial to descending, long to short, horizontal, diagonal, vertical, and intersecting. Debbie Clement’s song “Top to Bottom, Left to Right” is an entertaining way to practice these concepts in a kinesthetic manner. Handwriting Without Tears®️ Handwriting Without Tears®️ is a developmentally, multi-sensory handwriting curriculum. It uses consistent letter chants, music, color lined paper, and handson materials. Instead of writing a circle and a stick to form the letter “a,” Handwriting Without Tears®️ uses a continuous movement to create the letter. Handwriting is a crucial aspect of elementary education. Verifying that writing prerequisites have been mastered, along with identification of the child’s dominant hand, mastery of pencil grip and directional terms is important. Utilizing developmentally, multi-sensory handwriting curriculum is critical. Finally, make it enjoyable for the children. Use music, shaving cream, and practice. Having the automaticity of letter formation will promote success in all aspects of education. For information on helping the struggling reader, writer, and speller, contact the Nebraska Dyslexia Association, www.nebraskadyslexia.org.
