Third Floor Plan
El Centro project is the first component in a satellite campus master plan envisioned by NEIU to provide educational, career and cultural opportunities primarily. The El Centro campus seeks to revitalize this large swath of primarily industrial land bordered by Kimball Avenue, the Union Pacific/Northwest Metra line, and the 90/94 expressway, while serving as a catalyst for further development in the area. Although the site may seem overwhelmed by its context, the location is a significant and strategic design choice. The building footprint follows site geometry while pushing toward the expressway to reflect an urban street edge with parking hidden behind. This orientation allows the building itself to act as a marketing tool for NEIU. Unlike a billboard, the architecture asserts its presence, not through shameless advertising, but through twisting roof forms and the bold NEIU school colors prominent on the vertical louvers rhythmical arrayed along the building’s facades.
The building’s sculptural form and vibrant facade are layered with intent reaching far beyond their superior marketing capabilities. Especially indicative of this point are the exterior vertical louvers, which when coupled with the fullyglazed single-loaded corridors, combine to create an incredibly efficient sun-shading and acoustic-buffering barrier, protecting students of the many evening classes offered from the intensity of the setting western sun and the roar of rush hour traffic. The canted walls and twisting roof forms respond to the programs within. The solid portion at the base of the building houses NEIU’s art collection in a linear gallery which connects the expansive, double-height multi-purpose/lobby area with the student resource center at the opposite end. From there the building rises along with tiered theater style seating which define the space and connect it to the stacked classrooms on the second and third floors. The building culminates at the student lounge where the ceiling sweeps upward, drawing your view to the Chicago skyline, and pulling you outside to a lush green terrace.
SAIC Photo Department
Higher Education Chicago, IL Size: 4,000 sq. ft. Status: Completed
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) reconfigured the existing Photography Department facilities located on the second floor of 280 S. Columbus Drive. The project included an interior renovation designed to rejuvenate the quality of space and to give the series of isolated rooms a continuous, and encompassing identity.
Budget: 0.6M Year: 2011-2012 Involvement: Project Architect
The conceptualization of the project stems from an initial investigation of the mechanics of photography and film making. Identifying elements like aperture, exposure, and depth of field, we began to translate them into viable architectural devices such as the framing of views, wall opacity, and forced perspective. The various rooms that make up the photography department are linked by a common corridor, which acts as a connecting spine.

The project re-purposed an abandoned industrial building renovated and enlarged to accommodate the programmatic components. This 1920s-era, heavy timber and brick building has been given a brand new color-morphing facade and a complete interior renovation. All this, combined with the school’s cutting-edge educational strategies and technological teaching tools have brought this project to the forefront of contemporary educational design.

Interiors/ FF&E
The four levels of the building are identifiable by their bright color scheme, graphics, and furniture, which provide the students with a positive and energetic experience as they progress through their education. The existing exterior brick walls have been clad in a new, high performance rain screen technology, that has dramatically improved the thermal performance of the building envelope and the overall health of the facility. This skin not only has increased the sustainability of the building additionaly it symbolizes the transformation and progress of a neighborhood and community.

Interiors
Located on the Southwest side of Chicago in the Gage Park neighborhood, the building stands as an inspiration for the community. Engaging students as well as residents of the predominantly Hispanic neighborhood to play active roles in their education, through means of a strong curriculum supplemented by the culturally embraced sport of soccer, community outreach programs, and intelligent design. The design of the building itself is inspired in part by the educational development of the children it serves. Just as a child grows, the building appears to grow out of the ground, where programs such as learning theaters, administrative components, and classrooms frame a soccer field courtyard. Developmentally essential programs including a fitness center and resource library progress the movement of the building gradually upward. Finally, the building culminates in a community center that frames views of the Chicago skyline, inspiring students and neighboring residents to achieve their potential. In addition the design turns a conventional elementary school inside out. By locating the corridors along the largely glass perimeter of the building while simultaneously locating a full-height glass wall along the interior classrooms, the school is able to dramatically increase daylight and views inside the classrooms.
SC House
Residential Guadalajara, Mexico Size: 2,500 sq. ft. Status: Completed Budget: 1M Year: 2003-2004 Involvement: Junior Architect Award: XII Cemex Awards
In a site with a view towards the open ground, a small l house is developed on what was the platform from a pre-existing terrace. The program is resolved within a volume whose character is closer to a pavilion than to a house. It consists of a stone base, a white volume on the ground floor and a concrete volume on the second floor. Due to the limitations in square meters the house looks towards the green areas in order to achieve greater spatial extent. This is achieved through the large window throughout the house and terrace giving a panoramic view to the main bedroom. A few materials were chosen in order to achieve further unity and emphasize the spatial configuration: white walls, concrete, wood and black concrete floors
