HYUNDAI TUCSON

In a marketplace which is awash with SUV type vehicles I was surprised to realise that the Hyundai Tucson had been around for over 17 years, the first arrived back in 2004 and now the 4th generation has been launched and without doubt it is one of the highlights in the Hyundai arsenal of vehicles, writes Bob Hickman.

It is available as either a petrol or a mild hybrid, there is not a diesel should that be your forte. The motoring press in general have been quite praise worthy about the Tucson and it is easy to understand why, its exterior shape and ergonomics are never going to upset anyone and it looks quite an attractive vehicle, although a little on the large size.

The interior quality has had a major improvement over the years and interior space is improved, the boot is exceptionally bigger. The level of equipment is now getting higher and higher and it does worry me the amount of electronic toys and gismos that are included so that in 4 or even 5 years down the line there may be problems. Of course you not overlook Hyundai’s brilliant warranty which is 5 years, so any worries I have may be allayed.

Even the entry models have reversing cameras, huge digital touchscreen displays, and extensive accident avoidance technology, that having been said that sometimes you do wish you could switch it off such as the lane divert or the bells and whistles that bing and bong when you are a little close to a hedge or somebody is a little closer to you than you would like.

The vehicle on test came equipped with the hybrid technology, and was a pleasure to drive, its 1.6-litre petrol engine produces 120bhp, with permanent 4-wheel drive, a 48volt electric system put in a little bit extra

support, the drive was through a wonderfully pleasant companion of a 7-speed automatic gearbox.

The extra height of a SUV always gives excellent all round good visibility and from a driving perspective the seats and steering were was adjustable, there was huge amount of extra head, leg and knee room and even rear passengers would not quibble at going on a lengthy journey inside his vehicle.

I love the factor that the test car had heated front seats, a feature that possibly you don’t require, but boy once experienced you wonder how you managed without it. The technology included in the vehicle, a huge 10.25” touchscreen Satellite Navigation System and it was simplicity in itself, a decent audio system with 8 speakers gave you allround sound add in to the equation Blue Tooth and the Apple Car Play, you really were spoilt for choice as to where and what you needed from your technology and entertainment.

Safety and security on the Tucson were exceptionally high, there was a whole plethora of air bags all round, there was the blind spot collision warning system, a brake assist system, downhill braking control, a stability control, the list goes on and on in respect of the safety and security features that are included.

There are a lot of SUV’s but the Hyundai Tucson could well tick the boxes for you with a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty, Road Assistance and a 12-year anti-perforation warranty the Tuscan really has to be on your list to have a quick peek.
