WEATHERPROOF YOUR

SKIN FOR WINTER Lisa Evans Reid Clinical Director at Reflect

In the winter months, you may start noticing a difference in your skin. Winter tends to signify harsher weather and tougher conditions for your skin. Lower temperatures and low humidity levels result in dry air that draws moisture away from the skin. Harsh winter winds and dry indoor heat can worsen the problem and lead to dry, dull and sometimes even cracked skin. Conditions such as eczema or psoriasis may also flare up during these cold months.

While additional moisturising products can help, there is plenty more you can do to support your skin. Here are some tips to help you nurture your skin in the winter months.

1. AVOID LONG, HOT SHOWERS AND

BATHS. While a nice soak in a hot bath can feel great in the winter, it can strip your skin of essential oils causing dryness and for your skin to become flaky, so keep your water lukewarm!

2. CLEANSE THE SKIN ON YOUR FACE BUT

DON'T OVERDO IT. Too much cleansing removes the skin's natural moisturisers. Once a day is fine, preferably in the evening. Use a Micellar in the morning to freshen the skin but not strip it down. Don't shy away from exfoliating your face or your body. It will help reduce flaky skin and stimulate circulation but choose an exfoliating product that's not harsh or heavily perfumed. Look for natural ingredients that will also lock the moisturiser in after exfoliating, and never "scrub" your skin. It's a word I detest as scrubbing at your skin will inflame it. Gentle circular, massage type movements with the whole hand are ideal and far kinder. On the face be extra careful; using the pads of your fingers in a sweeping motion is much more effective.

3. CHOOSE YOUR WINTER MOISTURISER

WISELY. Look for one that contains lipids to help maintain the strength of the skin's protective barrier, which holds moisture and protects the skin from damage. Lipids aid the skin's natural repair process. Alternatively, if your skin is very dry, you might try adding an emollient moisturiser that seals in moisture, followed by another moisturiser on top. On your face, choose serums over heavy moisturisers even in winter, but be more generous in your application, and if you are not sure which serums to choose, I always advise antioxidants and hyaluronic acid based which will protect you from the harsh elements and keep you hydrated, which are perfect for skin health.

4. HUMIDIFY. Dry air can pull the moisture from your skin. Room humidifiers can be very beneficial. However, it's essential to clean the unit and change the water regularly to reduce mould and fungi.

5. DON'T FORGET THE SUNSCREEN. SPF 30 to 50 isn't just for the summer months. Winter sun, combined with glare from snow, can seriously damage your skin. Apply sunscreen to your face and hands (if they're exposed) about 30 minutes before you go outside. Reapply if you stay outside for longer periods of time.

6. DITCH THE TANNING BEDS. Overexposure to UV rays in sunlight can lead to premature ageing. However, when skin is exposed to sunlight or UV-B rays, it enables our body to make vitamin D that converts it into a

hormone often referred to as activated vitamin D or calcitriol. It can be more difficult to get the sun exposure needed during the winter months, and many people think a tanning bed can provide the vitamin D they lack during dark, short, cold days. But in fact, the damage a tanning bed can do to your skin far outweighs any temporary boost. Both ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation cause cell damage that can lead to skin cancer.

7.CHOOSE A VITAMIN D SUPPLEMENT

Taking vitamin supplements can ensure that you get the recommended amounts of vitamin D all year round.

8. PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE WIND. Cover your face and use a petroleum-based lip balm. Skin protectants that include petroleum and creams with ceramides are effective as

Our Health

well. But avoid them if you suffer from face or body acne as they will exasperate the condition.

8. AVOID EXTREME COLD. Cold temperatures can cause skin disorders or frostbite in some people. See a doctor immediately if you develop colour changes in your hands or feet accompanied by pain or ulceration.

10. OUT OF SIGHT, OUT OF MIND. When your skin is wrapped up warm for winter, you are less likely to notice changes in it! It's essential to examine your skin regularly and note any new moles or growths and any changes in existing ones. Lesions that have changed, itch, bleed, or don't heal are also alarm signals. Even if you've carefully practiced sun safety all summer, it's vital to continue being vigilant about your skin in winter. Self-exams can help you identify potential skin cancers early.

How Hypnotherapy

Could Help You Louise Squires HPD, DSFH, MNCH (Reg.) AfSFH (Reg.), MHS (Reg.)

Having suffered with anxiety in the past, working in high pressure sales roles, whilst managing the demands of two young children. I understand how stress can impact every aspect of our lives, leading to weight gain, panic attacks, insomnia and negative self-talk.

As a solution focused hypnotherapist, I help people to make significant, positive changes in their lives in a short period of time. I help my clients focus on what they want to achieve rather than on their problems. Sometimes clients feel a certain way, but they don’t know the reason why, or they don’t want to talk about why they feel the way they do. I work with clients with anxiety, depression, weight management, phobias, sleep problems, confidence issues, imposter syndrome and many other areas. I help my clients to identify and work with their inner skills and resources, to help them to realise their potential and ability to make positive changes.

I offer a free initial consultation if you would like to find out more about how hypnotherapy could help you, please get in touch.

Appointments are available at my clinics in Bromsgrove and Quinton, or I offer home visits, if required.
