3 Offbeat Easter Crafts to Uniquely Celebrate the Season

No holiday gets you in the crafting spirit quite like Easter. Pretty pastels, cute chicks and bunnies, and fresh flowers are all symbols of the season, and make for adorable crafts. We all know about Easter baskets and dyed eggs, so why not do something a little different this year? Here are three Easter crafts perfect for they DIY-er who likes to be unique – and likes to shop at home. Most of the supplies for these Easter crafts can be bought online from Kmart and shipped straight to your door. So what are you waiting for? Wheatgrass Centerpiece

For years, wheatgrass has been a favorite for home chefs and crafters alike. This tiny, super green grass is chock full of nutrients, and nice to look at, too. Though most keep their wheatgrass in the ktichen, why not bring it to the dining room table? It’s a great, eco-friendly centerpiece for Easter dinner.

First, you need to find a vessel for your wheatgrass. This will be your centerpiece, so pick something that is both suitable for growing and nice to look at. Galvanized metal baskets are a popular choice. This Kidsline Dot Galvanized Metal Basket ($12.99) is perfect for Easter since it comes in a sweet pastel green color. Next, pick up a bag of potting soil and some wheatgrass seeds from your local gardening store. Wheatgrass is a popular plant, so if you’re unsure of which soil or seeds to choose, someone will be able to help you out.

Determine how much soil you’ll need. Wheatgrass grows about 3 inches, and you want it to be seen. So get enough soil to fill the basket nearly to the top. Before planting the seeds, water the soil, so that it is slightly damp. This will keep the seeds in place, and give them water without flooding them. Next, plant the seeds. Simply sprinkle them evenly along the surface, then gently pat them down. Cover with a moist paper towel, and place in a sunny spot. For 4 days, replace the paper towel every day, and make sure the seeds stay hydrated. After 4 days, you can remove the paper towel and expose the seeds to direct sunlight. It takes about 10 days for wheatgrass to reach its full height, so plan accordingly.

The centerpiece is finished once the wheatgrass reaches its full height. If you want, you can accessorize with fresh flowers, or even little Easter treats. These extra-shiny Easter Jubilee Eggs($5.82) would look great nestled in the grass. Or why not tuck in a stuffed Easter bunny ($5.17)?

Fabric Bunny Tail Canvas

Though we all love the disposable plastic eggs and paper bunnies that are bought year after year, it’s not a bad idea to make some more permanent Easter crafts. This fabric canvas is a modern, more

grown-up version of these cute decorations. Make one or more to last, then hang them up around the house each year.

Start with an Artists’ Quality canvas board ($6.47) of any size. You’ll also need a glue gun. This Dual Temp Mini Glue Gun ($7.19) will work for a lightweight craft like this. Go to your local fabric store and find some fun fabric that you like. You’ll need a different pattern for each bunny, plus a background pattern. For your background, buy as much fabric that will fit your canvas twice over. Buy a yard of fabric for each bunny. Pick up some large cotton balls, as well as some cute trim if you want some. Lastly, find a bunny stencil online, and print it on paper. Print one for each bunny.

Start by cutting out your bunnies. Do as many as you like, as long as they all fit on the canvas with some space between them. Pin a stencil to each piece of fabric, and then cut along the lines. Do this for each bunny. Next, take your background fabric and stretch it along the canvas so that it fits tightly and doesn’t wrinkle. Pin it to the canvas, then cut away any extra fabric. Unpin the fabric and set aside. Using your glue gun, put a line of glue at the top edge of the canvas. Place your fabric on the glue. Make sure it’s the correct side, and that there are no wrinkles. Next, put a line of glue on the bottom edge of the canvas. Stretch the fabric along the canvas and secure. Repeat on each side. Pull the fabric tightly each time so that it stays wrinkle-free. Now you’re ready to glue on the bunnies. Arrange them on the canvas, and then one by one, spread a thin layer of glue on the back of each bunny, then reapply to the canvas. Finish by gluing on a cotton ball for the tail. If you decide to do a trim, apply a thin line of glue at the top of the canvas, and lay the trim along it. Move to the side, and repeat. Do this until you cover each side, then cut off the excess. And if you’re looking to save a little money while making something so cute, don’t forget our Kmart coupons!

Easter Egg Bouquet

Though Easter baskets are always a nice treat, they’re a little predictable. Surprise your loved ones with bouquets made of candy-filled Easter eggs. These bouquets take little effort to make, yet are

guaranteed to blow everyone away. This is one of those Easter crafts that’s sure to become a hit in years to come.

Each bouquet uses about 10 Easter eggs, so if you’re going to be making a lot, we recommend buying in bulk. This 150-count bag of plastic Easter eggs ($6.47) should be plenty. Buy enough bamboo skewers ($2.56) so you have one for each egg. You’ll also need some baskets. This Easter Jubilee Beaded Basket ($5.17) is so cute, and at $5, it’s a real steal. Pick up some plastic Easter grass and floral foam from your local craft store, and you’re ready to go.

Start by spreading a thin layer of grass on the bottom of the basket. Then cut some floral foam so it fits snugly in the bottom. Using a small screwdriver, bore a tiny hole in the bottom of a plastic egg. It

should be just small enough that the tip of a bamboo skewer can fit in. Use the skewer to bore a larger hole until the egg is sturdy on the skewer. Do this for each egg.

Next, arrange the eggs by tucking them into the floral foam. It looks best when you really crowd them in, just like you would with flowers. Use a pair of pliers to cut some of the skewers into different lengths. It will add a nice sense of variety to the bouquet. Finish by filling the basket with grass so you can’t see the foam. If you want, put a piece of candy in each egg, or tuck some lovely Fleur de Lys silk flowers ($4.50 each) around the eggs.

Just like presents at Christmas or a valentine on Valentine’s Day, Easter crafts are sweet gestures we do to show our love. Even if you’re just doing them for yourself, these three crafts are a great way to

celebrate the season. You’ll love doing something different and expressing your creativity in entirely new ways. Whatever you decide to do, make Kmart your crafting destination.
